I was really excited to try this place since it had Italian Wedding Soup and it was close to my office. It had a great atmosphere, and I ordered the Italian Wedding Soup to go, the staff was very friendly. I got back to my office opened up my soup getting more and more excited I put my crackers in stirred my soup around pulled up my spoon to find a piece of black hair about 4 inches long and they make the soup without pasta. I do not think I will be returning

The iced coffee. The Luca Brasi. The Salad Special. The amazing staff and owners. These are the highlights. The negatives? NOTHING.

So far I've only had the eggplant parm side (a few times), but I have to say, it's really incredibly tasty, and at a great price to boot. I know this is weird, but I've ordered eggplant parm at other places before sans tomato sauce (which was actually really good), and the first time I went to Cafe Rustico I almost asked them to hold the sauce as well... I'm glad I didn't because I really like their sauce. The best part is the eggplant though, so yummy, fried goodness. And did I mention their sides are cheap? I'm thinking I'll try one of their veggie sandwiches sometime soon, in the meantime I'm doing everything I can not to order the eggplant parm twice a week.

This is one of those places that I am not sure I want to write about because i don't want it to be overrun with people! Seriously my favorite place for lunch! The Chicken Parm Sandwhich is my favorite! The salad special is also very good! Excited to try the pastas because they look amazing. They have the most amazing pomo sauce!! A Local Jem!!

A no-frills, cash-only Italian-inspired restaurant that's part take-out, part sit-down (if you can find a seat at one of the few tables). I am so happy I work near here so I can get to eat the most delicious, rich, creamy gnocchi ever whenever I want. Seriously, the gnocchi is incredible! The other pasta dishes are also very good, but the gnocchi is the stand-out by far. The sauce is absolutely perfect, the cheese is always fresh (you can tell by the stringiness) and the little dried herb seasoning on top is the perfect touch). I sampled the arugula salad once with some co-workers and boy was it good. Amazing dressing, very fresh vegetables, just superb for being, well, a salad. Between that and the gnocchi, I had such an amazing meal. And even though it's cash only, the prices are so much more affordable than over-priced North End eateries a few blocks down. So glad I'm a hop and skip from this place.

Great homemade food! Better than any restaurant in north end at half the price. Meatballs, gnocchi, chicken parm sooooo good! New owner a couple months ago, she's so sweet! She restructured the menu so it's all homemade. I highly recommend it!

RUSTICO! This update is so well deserved. You've changed back, kept the t-shirts and dang good service. The coffee is now delicious and you have added some effing awesome veggie subs. The Rustica is maybe my favorite sandwich I've ever eaten - A sandwich with mozzerella and tomatoes that for once doesn't have basil - I'm pretty much a fan forever now. I'm sorry I ever doubted you. Thanks for combining the best of the old and the new. I'm back.

I've worked in the Bulfinch Triangle for the past 9 years and I can say with confidence that Cafe Rustico is hands down the best lunch option in the immediate area. I love the casalinga salad. Always feel like the veggies are fresh. If I want something heartier, I love the pollo or the chicken parm. The cookie is a relatively new addition, which is fantastic. I have to say though, I used to think the gnocchi was the best around. I had it today, and something was a little different about it. Still love the sauce but just wasn't as good as it used to be. Anyway, I'd probably give this place 4 1/2 stars. Such great value for the quality of food.

The four of us were looking for a quick bite before a Celtics game. All of the bars were packed, so we walked further, and found this little gem. The Italian dishes were very fresh, and the staff couldn't have been more friendly (from detailed descriptions of the food, quick service sine we were in a hurry, and even free samples of their home made cookies). We actually went back there on the following sunday evening since my wife wanted to try the gnocchi this time. Unfortunately we learned that they were closed (they close at 4pm), which is the one big down-side. Extend your hours Didi!

Steph D. said it better than I ever could have. Rustico, what happened? I used to come to you at least once a week and I couldn't stay away. Now? Not so much. Everything has been lacking for months and it honestly only took me one visit to taste the difference. The cooks are the same, but the quality of ingredients and the quantity of it all is just not the same. I give up. The North End is WAYYYY too close for them to slack like this.

What oh what has happened to Rustico? Previously a bright, shining star in the world of tasty lunches, its new management has seriously, seriously dropped the ball. Existing menu items have deteriorated -- slapdash construction, poorer ingredients. My salad tasted like it was dressed with water. New menu items cheapen the establishment, like steak tip sandwiches that are nothing more than a few grilled tips on a supermarket roll with a slice of provolone laid on top, and a sheet of construction paper now hanging off the bottom of the posted menu that advertises tuna and ham sandwiches. You're really pitting those against gnocchi and sandwiches with heavenly light, fresh mozzarella? Get with the picture -- no one going to Rustico wants another run-of-the-mill deli, especially for over $8 a sandwich. I give you two more chances, tops.

I'm feeling pretty mixed bag about this place. Admittedly, I would have never gone in here if the people who run Mulligan's next door hadn't been on vacation. However, it was crappy outside, and I wanted a non-subway sandwich. There was a crazy line (that will happen anytime one of the restaurants in the area is closed for lunch) so I took the time to read the menu. If you've read any of my previous reviews, you know that I'm kind of picky, so when I went to the front counter I asked if there was anything on any of the sandwiches that was not listed. Specifically, mayo, dressing, etc. The girl behind the counter said no, but I could get anything else if I wanted it. I didn't, so I was pleased to be able to order something off the menu without modifying it.... That was until I bit into my sandwich. COVERED in dressing. I had to work hard to salvage what little chicken wasn't stained purplish by whatever dressing they'd used. Regardless, I came back another day because the pasta looked good. I ordered the cheese ravioli with meat sauce. It was delicious! It was topped with some bad basil (i.e. not the restaurant's fault, someone probably sold them old basil) but it was easy enough to pick off. But the sauce was dripping with oil. I'll never understand why a person feels like they should ADD oil to a red sauce? I also ordered garlic bread, which I expected to be buttery (or olive oily) deliciousness. It wasn't. Again with the dressing. I'm not sure what they put on the cheese, but it was vinegar-like, and I again threw out 80% of what was ordered. Things I liked: 1. DELICIOUS ravioli. And relatively fast. 2. They put meat sauce on cheese ravioli! This carnivore appreciated that! 3. Everyone working there is very polite. Even when they are slammed. Sandwiches simply come with chips without having to pay extra. Things I didn't like: 1. Dressing on everything! 2. it's a bit expensive. 3. Everything was too oily for my taste. All in all? Decent pasta, and my sandwich looked good, I couldn't tell you if it was tasty or not. If you have a food allergy, move along because you'll get something here you didn't expect. 3/5

I will definitely be back! Such a cute, quick little cafe. Only down side is it isn't around the corner from my job!!! The food was spectacular! Kiki (one of the owners) was super friendly and had a great personality. I rarely venture over toward Canal Street and had it not been for a gift certificate, I'm not sure I would've chosen to go to Cafe Rustico. I am very glad I did however. All of the prices were extremely reasonable especially for the amount of food my boyfriend and I got. The side of homemade meatballs were wonderful and smotohered with lots of yummy homemade sauce. The eggplant Parmesean dinner was tasty- thinly sliced eggplant piled up high atop pasta, also loaded with the homemade sauce. Another entree we chose was the cheese ravioli. Homemade ravioli goodness covered once again with the sauce, but a nice chunky, full meat sauce. For dessert we shared a homemade chocolate chip cookie and each got a mini cannoli. The chocolate chip cookie was served warmed up- it was thing, light, soft, and a little chewy but PACKED with chocolate chips. Another perk of dining in and not taking food to go was that Kiki and her team baked the cannoli shells fresh!!! She pulled the shells out of the oven, immediately filled them and brought them over. They were "finger lickin' good". Can't wait to go back!

I am so happy I stopped in here today instead of Mulligans. The staff is beyond friendly (not to mention the guy who made my sandwich was handsome!) and my sandwich is DELICIOUS. I've declared that my new weekly eat-out place has changed from Mulligans to Cafe Rustico. I got a Chicken allo Pesto without the tomatoes... amazing. Can't wait to try something else. And apparently this place is under new management, thank Jesus. The woman (owner) who greeted me at the door was sweet, informative and helpful. Nice to see a woman running a cafe! Excited now I won't have to cross over to the North End to get some decent Italian for lunch!

The Salad Special (it has grilled chicken, tomato, onion, cucumber, fresh mozzarella, and balsamic vinaigrette dressing) from Cafe Rustico is probably the best salad I've ever had. All the ingredients are fresh and taste great, the grilled chicken is real strips of grilled chicken, not the gross processed stuff most places throw in. They put the dressing on and it is the perfect amount and is on the entire salad, not just sitting on the top. They also throw bread and butter in with it. I've only had this salad and a slice of their pizza but I can only imagine the rest of their food is great too. Only bummer is that they close at 3pm!

  • JohnnyFoodface ..

I'm a big fan of Rustico for their vegetarian options, they have one sub in particular called the Veggie that has tomato, mozza, zucchini, eggplant and pesto, which tastes very fresh and is oily but in that italian clean-olive kind of oily. The staff is friendly and talkative and is happy to make little tweaks if you like it a certain way. Only thing keeping me from 5 stars is their bread options. I much prefer wheat or multigrain, something healthier.

I was taking my sister to Mulligans for some delicious George Wright and found it closed (on vacation). Desperate and hungry we decided to try Cafe Rustico which is right next door. The only reason? They had a sign that said: Sicilian pizza...pizza being one of the main food groups my nephew eat from, we decided that at least they'd be happy. The sister didn't order anything...said she wasn't hungry. When the waiter brought out my Clemenza salad (add chicken, hold the onions), she couldn't keep her fork and knife out of it. Such a simple salad of arugula, tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, cucumbers, chicken and balsamic vinaigrette has no business tasting this good. I'd eat this salad again and again. Why only 3 stars? The pizza was just o.k. On a side note: this place was PACKED for lunch...it seems to be a place many locals get to go during their lunch hour. However, there are a few tables and they are quick to serve you.

This place is super fresh and tasty, and it's relatively cheap. I don't like their turkey sandwich -- way too dry -- but my god, the rest of the sandwiches are good. The "Clemenza" salad is underwhelming -- there's a TON of baby arugula and not much else -- but it's still from super fresh ingredients. I guess it tastes better when you add meat?!? Apparently they're under new management these days; the main courses haven't changed, but they're a little stingier than they used to be with the bread that comes with salads. Still... if you work nearby buildings, this is definitely the best place to eat. Thinking about their chicken parm sandwich (the "Pollo") is making me extremely hungry -- even though I just had breakfast.

Figured I'd chime in since I've been eating here for 10 months and lived through the transition of ownership. They got off to a rocky start but I think they are hearing the cries and fixing it to the level of quality the prior owner delivered. As far as the new menu items, I'd suggest trying before dissing. I had the steak tip sandwich today (I normally get pasta there, I next door for my sandwiches) and it was awesome. Worth $8.50? Not quite...$7 would be a better price...but it was still some of the best tips I've had. I can say confidently they are meeting my expectations once again on the sauces. Dropped the ball at first but they seem to be getting it right. Their ravioli and gnocchi are great and the sauces incredible. The portions for pasta, friggin HUGE. Easily feeds 2...but you probably won't want to share it. :) Lobster ravioli for $11.00 that feeds 2? Hard to beat that. Disregard the harsh and obviously unhinged reviews and try it out. They are also now open on game nights.

I work right across the street from this place and boy am I glad to have been introduced to this place. Kiki's new joint is fantastic; everything is fresh and homemade. According to her, she would never serve anything she wouldn't eat herself, which is always a good measure. Recommendations: Rustico sandwich (the prosciutto de parma and fresh mozz ratio is perfect and whatever olive oil they drizzle on is like liquid olive gold - a testament to the high quality ingredients), chicken parm (simple and FANTASTIC), meatballs (homemade, packed with flavor), and cannoli (the homemade cream is thick, rich and not too sweet, allowing the real mascarpone cream flavor to shine). If it weren't for the friendly staff, I don't think I would advertise for this place - the lines are long enough during lunch time! It truly is a gem. Tip: try getting there before noon as the lines are pretty long, despite Kiki & co. working through the crowd pretty quickly.

Love Osterio Rustico. Perfect for those who work in the area, always makes for a satisfying lunch. Their gnocchi dish is to die for, so fresh and nicely portioned. Chicken, broccoli, and ziti is great too, and they use tomatoes AND sun dried tomatoes which put it above average. Very fair prices for what you get. Would not recommend getting a table. The restaurant is too small and cramped, with limited room to move around and no place to wait for your take out.

I have to knock off a star because lately I feel like they've been skimping on stuff in their salads. Why, oh WHY does my salad special literally come with only 2 slices of cucumber? And 2 slices of tomato? Where are the INGREDIENTS?? Still a fan though, the staff is lovely and the sandwiches are delish, but stop cheating me!

The food here is amazing. I had an internship down the street and came here for lunch 1-2 times a week and I was almost always happy with my food. I always got the food to go so I don't know about the waiter/waitress service. My favorite thing to get was the rustico. The mozzarella was really fresh and went great with the prosciutto. If I decided to get something else the gnocchi was really good. They gave lots of bread and butter to go along with it. The portions are huge and a great value. If anyone is in the area looking for lunch this is the place to go. The owner was always really nice and very helpful. Bonus was usually they would have candy on the counter so it was a nice treat for after lunch.

Again, up north in urban and unknown territory for me, I was expecting stingy and small plates and meager servings of food, but I was knocked out of my shoes by the enormous bowl of baked gnocchi. Like... whoa... I've had the "real thing" in small town central Italy, but North Boston, if you know where to look, can seriously change your views on what "the real thing" is. I don' t think I'll ever be able to look at Italian food the same way again.... This is serious folks!

In possibly the worst area of the city for food, Rustico stands out as a consistent and excellent spot for lunch. Their ingredients are always remarkably fresh and the smell of their amazing bread that comes with everything, always makes me twice as hungry as when I walked in through the door. Their caprese salad really is the best in the city and it is definitely the incredibly fresh ingredients that make this true. Carmine, the owner, is such a nice guy and since he has a regular customer base, he knows almost everyone by name. As others have remarked, compared to the large portion sizes and quality of ingredients, this place is the best deal around. They have always been cheap, but unlike many businesses that used the economy as an excuse to raise their praises in 2009, Rustico actually lowered their prices without changing their portion sizes to accomodate their customer's shifting priorities. Now that is service!

Osteria Rustico is a tiny restaurant near North Station where you can get a sit down meal of Bertucci's quality for $8-11. Last time I was there I got the pasta with broccoli, which was delicious and big. Without the chicken - which you can get on the side - I believe it was $9. And it was really good and filling, although, I must say that the garlic stuck with me for the rest of the day. Beware the garlic. I have also had sandwiches there, which were a little cheaper and perfectly good. But they come with potato chips, and man I hate that. Give me something that will fill me up. I'd give this place three and a half stars, but what the heck, I'll round up.

The food is very good..down home Italian. The wedding soup and gnocchi were just like grandma used to make. I would definitely return for lunch. It is an excellent value. Be aware that it is very small with a couple tables, so if you plan to eat in, it could be a problem. We were fortunate to grab a table for 4 at lunch. Seems to do a brisk takeout business.

  • Meg H.

I really wanted to like this place, but it was just mediocre. I went today for lunch, for the first time, and I don't think I'll go back. I ordered a meatball sub for take-out, but when I got back to my office (which is right across the street), the sub was lukewarm and the meatballs were a little pinkish. I would have liked them to be cooked more. I'm glad others had great experiences here, but it was just not a good one for me.

This place is amazing. The food is fresh and delicious. The arugula salad is one of the best salads I've ever had. Add chicken and it's heaven. Better yet, add salmon. Heaven. They're a little pricey, but the quality is worth the price and it's expected for the area... Save a few pennies by going outside of the lunch rush hour (you get a discount). The chicken can run a little dry but it has wonderful flavor and works really well on the salads...

Of the three restaurants you can choose from for lunch (Cafe Rustico, Mulligans, and some other place that has the salad bar and bibimbap) this is the place to go! The staff definitely knows how to do lunch hour and will have your order hot, fresh, and ready to go in about ten minutes. I've worked within a block of this restaurant for four months now and every time I want something solid, I come here. No matter what I'm craving whether it's a salad or a pasta dish, I'm always pleased. The pasta dish is big enough to either split it with another person or to eat for lunch for two days. If you're lucky, they might even have a pasta dish as their special and you can save a buck or two by ordering that specific dish. In the past few months, I noticed that they upgraded their technology and now you can pay / order through a bunch of the services (living social, groupon, iphone, etc.) If you want to skip that line, I recommend ordering through one of those websites.

The plus is wonderfully cheap compared to all the chain sandwich places nearby, and you get a ton of food. The prosciutto leaves something to be desired, but everything else tends to be fulfilling. If you order a salad, the guy (I'm assuming he's the owner) hands you two fresh baked rolls. It's impossible to leave this plus not stuffed. Also pretty sweet: It seems to be designed for people that work nearby to just run in and out, because the prices are adjusted so that they end in an even number after tax. No need to come in or leave with ridiculous amounts of change. I can just walk in there with my apple bottom jeans and my asscheeks will be the only things filling them.

Like Adrienne below, my 60 Canal St. cohorts and I (now around the corner above the Harp on Portland St.) loved to run across the street to this seemingly 12' x 12' Italian storefront at lunchtime. Now, we just have to run a little further, trying not to be tempted by the Banknorth Garden bars on the way there. My staple sandwich is the "Larry," the Larifortre (sp?), which has grilled chicken and supple prosciutto on a unique bread with a light honey mustard-like dressing. Good stuff -- they also have sandwiches with balsamic and arugula with proscuitto and mozz. Amazing sandwiches...but... My favorite reason to go, whenever I'm working out of the Boston office, is to get a steaming plateful of Carmine's gnocchi. It is like a gnocchi alla sorrentina -- rich tomatoes, fresh basil, tender potato dumplings, and healthy chunks of fluffy white mozzarella melted within. Total comfort food, esp. on a rainy Boston afternoon. Very fair prices, very quick and friendly service, this is still my standby for a quick grab and go lunch in Boston.

Cafe Rsutico is a cozy yet charming restaurant run by a true Italian family. The restaurant is quaint and the ambience has a true feeling of a small cafe in italy. Aside from the pleasant and personable service, Cafe Rustico serves true authentic italian cuisine, with good portions, and savory dishes served in a laid-back setting with a truly diverse crowd. Its truly decadent. I strongly reccomend this establishment and would suggest the Lobster Ravioli, Gnocchi's, and finish with a cannoli and cappuccino. All made with an emphasis on freshness and seasonality that stands out and turns this menu into a road map to pure pleasure. As an italian descent, I truly felt like i was sitting at my grandmothers kitchen table for Sunday dinner.

I would eat the gnocchi every day if it wouldn't mean a barrage of health problems later in life. Morgan Spurlock should've done "Tortelloni Me: The Rustico Story." Cheap, excellent Italian food near North Station. Fresh sauces, reliable service, and a specials board that never seems to change. Want to go light? Get the salad special - chicken breast, fresh mozzarella, and a balsamic dressing. Want to ensure a food coma when you get back to work? Get the gnocchi, or even the gynormous pollo sandwich (chicken parm minus the fried chicken).

Until now, I'd only had Rustico's catering -- big tubs of pasta that were lukewarm but not bad. Craving soup for lunch, and not being able to handle the thought of eating Au Bon Pain again, I noticed their sandwich board outside advertising butternut squash soup (my favorite!) and decided to give it a shot. Poor choice. I ordered a soup to go and it was over SEVEN dollars! Turns out it was a pretty big bowl that they, thankfully, couldn't fill all the way because they ran out. So I got half of a big bowl of gross soup (it filled one of those small office paper coffee cups almost exactly - I was embarassed to be seen eating out of that weird styrofoam bowl so I relocated the soup and was suprised at how little it really was) for over FIVE dollars after they gave me two back. It was largely inedible. It tasted like chicken broth with some pepper in it. I'm not sure where they got the lovely orange color because it certainly wasn't from any actual squash. I ended up eating a few bites then throwing it out and going back to Au Bon Pain after all. I'd give Rustico only one star except that the catering pasta hasn't been too bad and they have pretty good coffee in the morning.

I have to repeat the sentiments of steph d's review that Osteria under new management is just not the same. I've been getting the caprese salad here for years and it's always been very good. Under new management there is much less mozzarella, non-existent basil, and inferior olive oil (I wouldn't be surprised if it's canola oil). The new place is okay, but to people who are used to Carmine and his way of doing things, it's a big step down. I haven't tried any of the other dishes under the new management, so can't judge how quality might have changed. Based on my salad experience, I don't think I'll bother trying.

In the waste land of the Garden area Rustico brings good lunch time fare. I have had the Rustico (the Prosciutto was wonderful) and even ventured to the Espo (Sausages, Peppers and Onions). Great stuff! Thank goodness because between the bars and bad pizza places Rustico stands out!

This is a great place to eat lunch if you work in the North Station area and you are tired of Subway, Au Bon Pain and the rest of the food in the area. It is small and cozy. The food is very good Italian-American fare. My favorite is the gnocchi, which is not quite as good as my off the boat Nana's gnocchi was but very close. The prices are very reasonable and the staff is friendly. Stop by if you are in the neighborhood.

I have been going to Rustico for the past 10 years. Now that Carmine is gone and the new management has taken over, I am extremely disappointed. The quality of the food has dropped and the new management stinks. Carmine had a successful formula. Great ingredients and great service. He remembered everyone who frequented his establishment. If I was the individual buying the business from him, I would not have changed a thing. Lines used to be out the door at noon. Now when I go in, the place is empty.

This great little hole in the wall Italian spot is right near where I work and should not be missed if you're wondering around the North Station neighborhood on a weekday. In particular, try going at a slightly off time, like a 2pm lunch instead of in the midst of the rush. The owners/chefs have a short but creative menu, reasonable prices, and a good attitude - helpful, but tough and efficient. All their pricing is designed to come out even with taxes, which is creative. They will take custom orders without too much of a raised eyebrow, but do you best to try to pronounce things correctly. They are generous with portions, consistent with quality, and in the classic Italian fashion, generous with little condiments like olive oil and cheese. Hidden gem on the menu, the tonno. I don't understand how it is so good, but a salad with tuna is no lame pale pasty mush of fish flakes here. Salad with tonno at Rustico is fresh colorful greens, tomatoes, cukes, and onions, and then what looks like a whole can of succulent oil packed deep pink robust tuna fish that will meet your protein needs for at least a day. Check them out.

Met a friend for lunch today and chose this place because of the reviews, my need for some Italian food and proximity to the Orange Line. It smelled amazing as soon as you walk in! I ordered the Lobster Ravioli - excellent quality (very cheesy sauce and fresh basil on top! mmmm) and large quantity - well worth the $11 price. Bread, Two entrees, two drinks, with 20% tip $30. The place is small and quaint but I lived in the North End so that doesn't phase me. Looking forward to coming back!

Rustico is the hidden gem of the "Bulfinch Triangle" neighborhood. If you work in the area and have not yet tried Carmine's food, you should RUN to give this place a try. The tomato cream sauce is downright addictive, and should be added to the DEA's list of illegal substances. It is the highlight of all the sauces offered. Rustico's Caprese has the largest and freshest tomato and buffalo mozzarella pieces in town. Their chicken salad is fantastic, with a unique preparation where the chef grinds the chicken with the seasoning, served up with hot peppers, onions, and anything else you desire. I usually prefer chunks of chicken, so this says something about how good this preparation is. My only complaint is that the chicken breasts used in sandwiches or on salads tend to be a bit dry. Especially when combined with a crusty bread, the dry chicken breast tends to make for a tough bite/swallow. Anyway - you get the idea - it's damn good. And I have two 'by the ways' : 1) don't let the $9+ pasta prices throw you - the portions are huge - and one can usually get two lunches / dinners out of the one; and 2) don't let the Yankees fan who usually works the counter get you down - he's alright, even though he roots for the enemy... Update: the Yankee-loving counter help has left the building...

I came here for lunch and got a salad with cold cut meats/cheeses and the garlic cheesey bread. They gave a lot of meat on that salad; so much that I couldn't finish it. The garlic cheesey bread never fails. I will probably always come here for this bread every time I come back to Boston. (Really close to the North Station T Station)

Osteria Rustico is delicious! My co-worker brought me there earlier this week and I'm so happy that I no longer feel limited to Subway or Au Bon Pain for lunch. I got a really yummy sandwich with grilled zucchinis and mozzarella in it and it was surprisingly well priced too. The only reasons I'd hesitate to give this place five stars: the guy who worked there was a little too curt for my liking, he made a big stink when my friend and I decided to eat-in at the last minute after noticing a table that had just opened up, they close before dinner time, and they were out of prosciutto. Mangiamo!

Since Mulligan's closed, I felt that the North Station area was really lacking good lunch food... until I discovered this place! I usually get the salad special w/ chicken - it is very fresh, and it is quite a large portion! They also have killer pasta dishes, but my second lunchtime favourite is their meatball sub with homemade sauce & provolone cheese. Sometimes the simplest things are the best, especially when they are made right! :) This place is very small with only about 5 tables, so unless you are getting take-out, get there before the rush to enjoy an almost European experience! :D

UPDATE #2: they have gotten better - the sandwiches are good again! ------------------- UPDATE: it appears to be under new management - the last Luca Brazi sandwich I had had REGULAR HAM instead of prosciutto, and way too much cheese. I'll try again, but I hope they maintain the quality of the original owner. -------------------- The Galina and Luca Brazi sandwiches are so, so good - grilled chicken with bacon and romaine or prosciutto and roasted peppers. The owner is very friendly.

P-H-E-N-O-M-E-N-A-L!!! In fact best garlic bread I've ever had! We were going to a Disney Ice Show today with my family. Beforehand I researched different restaurants that were within walking distance to the Garden. From the yelp reviews I knew that alcohol would not be served and there was limited seating. With that being said, I called 3 hours before and gave the restaurant a heads up that a party of 6 would be coming. The woman could not have been nicer. She totally accommodated us and the service was AMAZING. The prices are family friendly and I would definitely recommend this restaurant. Everything was very fresh and delicious!! Thank you for making it a great day!!

This place is hilarious! It's the kind of tiny, mom-and-pop, cooked-how-your-Uncle-Ronny-liked-it sort of place you'd expect the cast of Moonstruck to visit on a Saturday afternoon. It's simple and straightforward, and when I really need a comfort-food indulgence, there is no better eggplant parm in town. Classic.

Excellent family owned restaurant with delicious traditional Italian food. Great for lunch but extreeeeeemly busy with take outs. Limited seating but always consistent and service with a smile. :0)

I enjoyed a great sandwich, the Rustico, comprised of prosciutto, mozzarella and halved tomates lightly drizzled with oil. As I arrived at an early hour, I was able to sit outside and enjoy the weather. There was only one sidewalk table. Great lunch.

Gem! Our family ate dinner here before the Celtic's game because the usual spots were too crowded. The bread and oil was plentiful and delicious. Salad had fresh arugula and big slices of mozzarella; chicken sandwiches were fresh and flavorful. Get the Luca Brazi if you like prosciutto. Thanks Rustico!

Osteria Rustico does brisk take out business but that doesn't take away from those wanting table service. This is the perfect place to go when you've tired of the area pubs but you don't have enough time to go to Rabia's or other places near Salem & Hanover St. The gnocchi is my standby, though the lobster ravioli, caprese salad or other lunch specials are on my rotating list of dishes to order. Penne Boscaiola, with prosciutto and porcini mushrooms in a cream sauce, was on such lunch special that should be a regular. I've never tried their subs or take home pasta sauces. This place is super casual- canned and bottled drinks come from the fridge near the bathroom. I can easily say that I've never been unhappy with a meal here.

Very good Italian food at a great price. Nice people. I go here regularly (almost once a week) and I have never been disappointed. Staff is nice and friendly. They are very willing to accommodate groups as big as 10-12 people (they don't have much square footage). I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking to have a good lunch near north station.

Excellent for lunchtime takeout. Delicious gnocchi topped with mozzarella and tomato sauce. Generous portion of grilled zucchini for $2.00. Nice fresh ingredients, authentic feel.

When I worked at 54 Canal St. this restaurant was a saving grace for a lunch spot. The caprese is fabulous- they best I've had in the city (I honestly haven't tried that many) I could eat it for the rest of my life- for real. The caeser salads are delicous and the chicken perfect- but unless you like your salad loaded with dressing- make sure to request light on the dressing because they load it up hardcore. The ravioli with tomoato cream sauce was my treat when I didn't care about fat, calories, carbs, etc. and honestly everything is great- they have delicious fresh sandwhiches and crispy bread. The staff is great. We got to be friends with the guy behind the counter (i haven't been back in 8 months since I left that job so I can't remember his name) and he brought us bottles of wine to try cause we would chat so much. Overall- i love this place. If you are in the area around lunch time definitely check it out its perfect. If you work in the area and haven't been yet- GO you'll be hooked. unfortunately it closes after the work day- but make the trek for lunch its worth it.

i used to work across the street and totally miss this place at lunchtime- it is so so good. totally fresh food, chicken for salads are cooked to order, all dressings and sauces are homemade and so so yummy! everything is good- sandwiches, salads, pastas! the owner and his wife are nice people who seem to care about your business. def. more of a take out place- only about 5 small tables- but comfy if you want that.

Wow, two words: Luca Brazi. Best sandwich on the planet (ok, top 10 of all time). Get one....cool guy at the counter, too. Very helpful.

2 stars given that the italian sandwich i ordered was not commensurate with its quantity/price ratio too much bread, not enough meat and other delectables on the inside of the sub

Wow, I cannot figure out all the stars for this place. It was a big greasy mess and when I fired up the iPhone for a little wifi, this is what I got: "Oh, I don't have the password." This after the Yelp app says it's free. If you don't have the password that means you don't have it for anyone who asks. My visit was fairly early in the morning and the place was already dirty. I was the only one there so it wasn't like they had trouble getting to it. I'm not not sure how lunch is but if breakfast is any indication, I'm assuming not very good. Everything is super cheap though but I don't really need that much of a tradeoff. My omelet wasn't really an omelet but more like a scramble. Everything was in there that was supposed to be but other than that it's nothing to write home about. They were very friendly when I told them I was lost though and gave me directions on where to find the subway and how to get to my destination. Service was ok and she managed to smile and brighten up my morning. It's scary being new to the area and lost. I may in the future decide to give them another try if I'm in the area. Breakfast spots are few and far between if you're looking for table service. If not I'm sure there are plenty of options in the area.

Only a couple minutes walking from my work place, Cafe Rustico is a great little Italian restaurant. Prices are fair (~$10) and portions are fairly large. And you get delicious bread as a free appetizer. The first time I went, I got the gnocchi. It came with this tomato sauce with this cheese deliciously swirled in. Absolutely delicious on a cold, rainy day. I came here again the next day and ordered the cheese ravioli with regular sauce vs the meat sauce. It was also delicious but the sauce wasn't as great at the gnocchi sauce! The servers I had both times were polite and sweet. Service is relatively quick. A great place for a weekday lunch!

If you want a casual and DELICIOUS meal, this is your spot! We got a "cup" of Italian Wedding Soup, Antipasto Salad, Lobster Ravioli and Fettuccine With Meatballs. Servings were quite generous and we were all very happy with our meals. Sauces made me want to lick the plate!

  • Food E.

Yes, the food is great and the prices are right, but the real thing here is the people. They are the nicest/friendliest people I've ever met at a lunch place. It's refreshing when on break from work.

Stuck between Mulligan's and Boston Common Cafe (and the other cafe that I don't recall), Rustico is a small Italian spot that offers mediocre food. Breakfast and lunch open until 4. It gets a big crowd, but it just so happens to be in a busy area. I got the Ortagi sub and was hoping for something marvelous. Well, it was good, but just not what I expected. For $8, I was hoping a little bigger, different cheese and a little more flavor. Everything was cooked well, couldn't complain about that. I wish they offered more vegetarian/pescetarian items! I'd go there more..

Good services and a decent omelette make for a four star breakfast combination. The fifth star would be there if they had better coffee. It's no cafe so i didn't expect a prefect hand-poured artists cup, but ai'd like a little more of a kick in the ass from my coffee. At least buy Dunkins or Starbucks.

When I interned at GBLS I'd come here every single morning for oatmeal and iced coffee. Feeling kind of nostalgic I decided to stop by today -- it kind of broke my heart. I had the oatmeal and iced coffee and neither were the same. The oatmeal, while clearly the same brand/type, was way too thick and the iced coffee was no where near how amazing it was 2.5ish years ago. The breakfast menu has exploded since then (when I interned they just had muffins and oatmeal on the breakfast menu) so maybe I'll try one of those if I stop by again. The service was amazing so there's nothing to complain about there.

I go to Rustico once and awhile for lunch and I've never been disappointed. The staff is super friendly, they're efficient and quick at what they do. The food is delicious and the line is never out of control (not that they are not busy, but the staff is able to move it along). If your in the neighborhood and want a quick lunch this place is great. There isn't a lot of seating, but in the warmer months they have some additional seating in the front of the building. It's worth a stop!

  • Didi S.

I love this place and wish it were open for dinner on non-game nights as well, but whatever. The rustico has to be my favorite sandwich here, and I've been coming back to this place, even though for most of the last 7 years it's been horribly out of the way, just for this. Prosciutto, arugula, olive oil, mozzarella...I have no idea what else is in there, (it really could just be a dab of salted butter on the bread), but the entire thing is awesome. Soups are very very generously portioned. The butternut squash was awesome. Tried the lobster ravioli once on a whim and like everything else, it's so much better than you might suspect.

    (5)
  • Paul M.

I'm a fan of the food. Only thing holding me back from dropping in more frequently is that there's no place to sit down and eat during lunch -- really way too cramped -- makes ordering and picking up a pain, too.

Nice atmosphere, Family run, very tasting home cooking. Worth a stop when in Bostons north side. Excellent meatball sub and lobster ravioli. Cannoli was awesome as well!

  • Jeff L.

No free wifi like the listing said. :( The steak and cheese sandwich was pretty good, although in a to-go situation, the grease went through the paper plate, and through the brown paper wrapping. They should really give you a plastic bag for those type of orders. (Luckily, I had brought my own). Staff was nice and the place seemed clean, although it's a bit on the crowded side.

Not so impressed. Read the reviews on the gnoccis, which I love. But they are hard and dense. Not worth the calories, didn't finish my plate. The pomodoro was good but it's supposed to contain fresh mozzarella. Mine had two little chunks and the rest was kinda mixed in, so no yummy long chewy strings of cheese here. Overrated gnocci for sure. Also the service was slow and not particularly warm or friendly. They weren't ride, just not awesome either.

Great Subs and Pizza. I had the Sausage Sub with Mozzarella and sauce. Perfect amounts of everything and served with a great staff. The only problem I had was the really cute girl there kissed and hugged this other guy in front of me (one of their dad's or something) but she didn't kiss or hug me! Damn. I can't wait to return for some pizza and some subs even though I didn't get the hug and kiss from the pretty staff.

Yummy black pepper cafe! Followed Yelp's lead here earlier today when looking for a quick sit down lunch w wife, mother in law & baby. Started @ the highly-rated sandwich shop next door, but they didn't have any seating, so we went to Rustico. Only a half dozen small tables here, but we beat the lunch rush & came in out of the cold. Menu was mostly paninis, pastas and salads, w a couple of daily special soups. I got the cheese ravioli in a tomato meat sauce for around $10 - robust sauce tasted freshly made, full of meat & peppery. Other folks got the panini, on basic "spucky" rolls (think meatball sub) but the bread was lightly toasted & likewise fresh. Surprised by how much we enjoyed the french fries - basic homemade with skins on, but generously seasoned with black pepper and salt. Cannolli for dessert - crispy shell filled while we waited. Very friendly service! Though I'm not likely to end up in that part of the world very often, I will certainly stop in again if I get the chance.

Rustico is one of our favorite spots! My boyfriend and I happened upon Rustico on a snowy February night. We had just signed our new lease at our realtor's nearby office and only wanted to find a place to grab a quick dinner and drink. We ended up sitting in the window seat, enjoying our dinner and talking with the owner for close to 2 hours. The food is delicious and very reasonably priced. The ingredients are fresh and local. The portion sizes are perfect and then some - you're bound to leave with leftovers. The atmosphere is quaint and super friendly. As the restaurant emptied out that night, the owner, Kiki, welcomed and encouraged my boyfriend and I to take our time, relax and enjoy our dinner. She even allowed us to linger long after she had locked the doors. We have never felt more comfortable or at home in a restaurant. It's hard to believe this was our first time there. Our evening at Cafe Rustico was one of the best and most memorable dining experiences I've had in Boston.

Had lunch here with friends that were visiting from the West Coast. I don't know Boston well at all so I turned to Yelp for help (hey - that rhymes!). This place was highly rated so we headed over. This place is very small - only a handful of tables. I think they are only open for lunch. The menu is not extensive, but features a variety of sandwiches and pastas. There were 7 of us at lunch and 4 order the gnocchi, which was just OK. Hubby ordered a side of meatballs (good!) and a non-memorable pasta dish. The youngster in our group ordered cheese ravioli, but they shorted her on the order so she ended up ordering a second plate. The most amazing looking selection was the sausage sandwich. That sucker had to have been a foot long. If I head back here again that's what I'm ordering. Service was excellent. Prices were reasonable. I'd say this is a good place to go for lunch if you work in the area, but it will not WOW you if you are a tourist.

This place is right next to where I work and I love to come here. They have great subs especially the ones with pesto on them. Really fresh and delicious. It is always packed so make sure that you call in advance unless you want to wait for ~20 minutes. The best thing you can get here though is the coffee. Every morning I stop in here to get an iced coffee. Fantastic! I can't tell you how much better the coffee is than dunkin donuts or even starbucks. The ice coffee is a must buy, especially if need a kick in the morning like I do.

This place is a GREAT lunch spot. I work a couple blocks away and I go here a couple times a week. You can takeout or eat-in (but please note there are only 7 tables - 2 that seat four people and 5 that seat 2). It's clean and well run. It is clear that the owner, Kiki, takes pride in what she does. She always has a warm smile and a friendly greeting when you go in there (and she's really easy on the eyes; makes waiting for your food a plus). The sandwiches are very filling and are served on delicious bread. The italian sub, the sausage and pepper/onions sub, and the meatball sub are all very tasty and very filling. Garlic bread is outstanding and actually has real garlic in it. They often run specials and they are all worth trying. I have also eaten a few of the pasta dishes (eating in) and loved them all - fresh and flavorful. Ignore the negative reviews and try this place, I do not think you will regret it.

Stopped by for some lunch and bought a chicken parm and a bag of ketchup chips. First off, I love ketchup chips so the fact that they had it made me a little generous in their rating. The chicken parm was quite bland though, sigh. The cafe is small but has a lot of personality. It was very busy when I came (lunch time rush), there was a lot of hustling and bustling. I like that it's a family owned business. The people working here were very nice. Never forgot to smile and thank customers for their business even with the chaos. For that, I will come back and try something different from their menu next time.

Rustic has seen at least two more sets if owners since I first reviewed. It has greatly improved. Great lunch items; excellent sandwiches; friendly staff. Call in your order though or you'll face a long line between 12-1:30.

Had an amazing dinner here tonight. Totally unassuming place that serves up totally incredible food in a super warm, inviting setting. The owner and her father served us -- real nice story of a young entrepreneur with a passion to own her own restaurant, doing a kickass job at it. Had the lobster ravioli, sauce could have been served as a soup it was so good, chicken parm sandwich (really good), and the antipasto + caprese salad ... one of the freshest, tastiest salads I've ever had. Portion sizes are huge, the prices are totally awesome, all homemade, and you can't say enough about the warmth of this place. Totally not to be missed! A block away from the heart of North End at half the price, and 40x as good!!!!

Came here for breakfast on a Friday morning after waking up from our nearby hostel. I'm not a huge coffee snob, but whatever they were brewing was absolutely delicious. Ordered an omelet for breakfast with peppers, onions, and tomatoes, and though it didn't exactly LOOK like an omelet (more of just an egg scramble) that hardly made it any less delicious. Price was very reasonable for the value, and our server was very polite and prompt. I would definitely eat here again.

I am not really sure when Kiki took over, but she does great work. My only compliant is that she doesn't offer more soups, more frequently. The sauce is great, soup is great, salads are very good, the sandwiches (chicken pesto, lucca brasi, sausage parm, italian, are great) and the pasta is vastly under rated. If she has pizza or arancini , just get it...

the caprese salad is drenched in oil. boo. At least the ingredients are fresh so If you get the oil on the side it'll be good. The eggplant parm side is super cheap and literally an awesome lunch portion. they also have tiramisu in the fridge, if you're looking for something a little sweet and not super filling it'll totally get the job done. they have a few small tables, but if people are waiting, it gets a bit too crowded to sit and eat comfortably. they take credit cards, sooo that's nice...

This unassuming little spot has the best homemade gnocchi and pomodoro sauce EVER. The owner makes the sauce from fresh tomatoes every day. Wonderful service greeting happy locals. Best meal you can get near North Station/TD Garden. And when you think it can't possibly get any better, you get the bill. Would easily pay double the price charged. If I lived next door I would weigh 300 pounds. Not fancy, exceptional food. Go now.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
