Nice cozy place, independently owned and great service. Stopped in for breakfast while on a business trip in Boston. I read they only used to take cash but now they do card via square. It's a nice alternative to chain owned or hotel alternatives.

Lived in the neighborhood for a good number of years and I've only recently gave this place a try. Wow, I've missed a lot. I got the Western omelet that came with 2 slices of wheat bread and a cup of coffee all for $5.95. Each bite was filled with stuffings, but the eggs could've been a little more fluffy. I even came back a few days later to try their lunch sandwiches. I got the Turkey cobb sandwich, which was also very filling. The turkey slices were thick unlike others I've had before. The bleu cheese was very pungent for me, but overall it was a good sandwich.

Such a great little coffee spot! Please don't go here! I have had such trouble finding a quiet coffee shop to go to during the day. I'm not sure why it wasn't busier, but maybe it is because they don't have wifi? I was greeted quite pleasantly and with a little small talk which is part of what makes me want to go back again. I sampled their granny smith apple cake and it was *delish* with large pieces of apple and a delightful tang that one expects from a granny smith. I believe I overheard a discussion of black bean burgers which is cool because sometimes you want something warm and filling for lunch. It is a not too long walk around the corner from Back Bay station along some lovely tree-lined streets in the South End and it has an eclectic vibe that is sorely lacking in any Starbucks and even many of the newer coffee shops in the city. So, I do wish they had wifi, but maybe that's also why it's not packed? or maybe it's because it's in more of a residential area? I dunno, but I really liked it here and I will come back again and try more of their offerings.

We got great breakfast sandwiches and coffee during our recent stay in Boston. A friendly, cozy atmosphere with high-backed booths. If I'm ever back in the area, I would certainly return.

Nice service, breakfast sandwich was ok but the coffee was AWFUL. Maybe their more upscale coffee drinks are better, but I had a simple black cup of coffee and was so bad I threw it away.

It's got the Friends hangout name thing going for it, that's one. Then there's the delightful staff that called me Kid no less than eight times, that's two. And the fact that a giant raspberry jam filled linzer cookie and a tall cup of iced tea cost $4 total, that's three. But the tea was understeeped, old and bitter, even for a powdered pouch kind, and there were half-stocked boxes of inventory haphazardly arranged around the dining room and the service station was completely disheveled. About as comfortable as a teenager's bedroom, it's like a cafe with a serious hangover - completely unnerving. No wifi either, but pleasant for a pastry, maybe a coffee (if that's your thing) and then passing Go on your way out the do'.

Perhaps this what passes for a good breakfast in Boston. Equator Coffee is probably its saving grace. The counter fellow didn't smile but looked like his cat just died. Maybe it's the Californian in me but the guy seemed annoyed I was there! I ordered something called an "omelette " . Hysterical. It was missing its ingredients and was thinner than a pancake!! It was also fairly tasteless. The art on the walls was excellent though a sharp contrast to breakfast.

I've walked past this café several times when I'm out volunteering at the Animal Rescue League doing dog walking. It has a simple, ratty appearance that I thought I'd try out. The atmosphere is a dive with a no-frills appearance. The guy behind the counter never smiled but was curt which I guess being in the south end is the most you can hope for. I ordered a turkey & pesto in a tomato wrap with a cup of hot lemon-ginger tea. Now both items were good and I have no initial complaints but the major concern I have is that I got a nasty stomach bug 30 minutes later that lasted for 4 days! I'm sure it was from this café as I hadn't eaten for 5 hours prior. Could it be that I was the one millionth customer to get food poisoning? Perhaps the cook didn't wash his hands and used a dirty counter when preparing the sandwich? I can't say for sure but if I'm ever hungry again and in the area, I'll stick with the hot tea, you can't make people sick with a hot beverage can you?

Two egg omelet with bacon, onion, tomatoes and cinnamon sticky bun with hot apple filling just the best. Friendly local feel short walk from Park Plaza Hotel.

This place is wonderful! I had a late lunch here in April 2014. The food was delicious - I had the Tomato and Avocado Melt and the Granny Apple Pie. Great customer service and a relaxed, cozy atmosphere. I highly recommend eating here.

awesome coffee and sandwich shop - had the california BLT on french baguette. The bacon is extra crispy, they don't skimp on the avocado and the bread is really good and fresh - a good rendition of french baguette outside of France! I find that most versions of "french bread" in the US are just too "meaty" or bready instead of crunchy and light as they should be. The prices are right, too. I also had a "shaken" green tea, which is chilled and pre-sweetened. it tastes fruity, like peach or mango green tea but I'm not sure what since it isn't specified. would have loved to come here again, except they're closed for the holiday weekend that we were here in Boston!

I like this place. Food: sundries tomatoes and avacado melt sandwich-3.5/5. Beverage: soy latte-4/5. Ambience-4/5.

When I was first looking in this area to buy a place, this was the first meal I had in the area (minus fancy stuff) and it really was the icing on the cake. The spicy Ham and Cheese with Sun-dried tomato Pesto and hots is AMAZING. This morning I had the breakfast version that was layered with fluffy eggs - almost better. Best Vanilla Chai I've ever had.

I get intimidated when I go into coffee shops, since everyone has to add a triple shot of espresso, and truvia sugar substitute and all kinds of craziness.... But I felt home here. Cozy atmosphere, wonderfully nice staff, and a menu for everyone. They walked me through the different drinks and when I landed on the Iced vanilla chai latte they added a shot of espresso since I mentioned I was tired. This was the best chai tea latte I've ever had. Ever. Breakfast sandwich is simple, but a little pricey...especially with a 711 coffee next door for a buck ; )

Love love love this place! We stayed on Berkeley on a recent visit to Boston and we found this place on Yelp as a great breakfast place so this is where we ventured to start the day. The surroundings were super trendy, cozy, and definitely made me feel like this was a great place to spend some time enjoying a Cafe Mocha and a breakfast sandwich, which is exactly what we did. They had a great selection of breakfast sandwiches as well as coffee, hot and iced drinks. I ordered the Sarah Sandwich and Friendsay the Revolution Fitness Omelet. Both were great and were freshly made. Once we ordered, we sat down and the food and coffee were brought to us. We sat, planned our day, and felt like we were part of the community as everyone who came in and out were super friendly, including the staff.

For almost five years, I have been coming here to eat on a regular basis and though it is not right in the "heart" of South End, it is worth walking the extra block. Their breakfast and lunch menu is always fresh and unique, enough to allow one try a new item every day for a few weeks at least. The staff is very friendly and the space has a homey feel to it. The prices are very reasonable as well. You'll be happy you spent your money here. Enjoy!

We happened upon this cafe for bfast this morning as we are staying across the street at Chandler's Studios. Best bagel breakfast sandwich I've ever had...lots of eggs, cheese, avocado, coming out the sides of the huge bagel. Delish latte and very sweet service from the guys behind the counter. Highly recommend!!

Recently spent the night at the Chandler Inn Studios which is across the street from this place. Looking for a place to grab coffee, breakfast and camp for awhile we searched the neighborhood and finally settled on this place. It was all around great. Coffee was great, food was really good, the staff were incredibly friendly and the atmosphere was perfect for working and talking to my husband for over almost 2 hours. It has quality food and drink with a very cozy cafe feeling. If I lived in this neighborhood this would be my go-to place.

I stopped in here during lunch for a quick cup of coffee. I immediately ordered the Cafe Au Lait, since the last time I had one was in New Orleans. A small cup cost me $2.25 total. (I list the price because so often we as reviewers leave price out, and yet price plays a big factor in whether the quality of food was worth the price paid.) Anyway, the cafe au lait was excellent! For the price of a cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee, you can get delicious, quality coffee with steamed milk. I'll return here for sure. Update: Now I eat their tuna melts, avocado tomato melts (with pesto) and they are delicious. Just absolutely love the food and coffee here.

This is a great little place for breakfast or lunch. They have a variety of coffee/espresso/tea options for your caffeine pick-me-up and a ton of breakfast and lunch food options. Great bagels, great wraps, great omelets and GREAT customer service. (The grilled chicken/pesto wrap is fantastic!)

    - Now takes credit cards! - "Cheers" atmosphere in a coffee shop ... Locals stop by & everyone knows your name ... I'm not a local but always get welcomed like one - $6 (+ tip) great breakfast can not be beat

  • Danny V.

This is everything you hope a neighborhood coffee shop to be....Great coffee, breakfast sandwiches, muffins and scones. If you go for lunch the sandwiches are as good as it gets. Reasonable prices and excellent, friendly service. It's the coffee version of Cheers where everyone knows your name. Once you stop in here you will never want to go anywhere else.

Love this place! My brother and I were staying at a hotel around the corner (Chandler Inn) and stopped in here for breakfast on our last morning. I got a toasted bagel with cream cheese and a large coffee for $4. Awesome and delicious. You don't find prices like that at a place as nice as this in New York. Great staff. Great location. Damn fine cup of coffee.

I've decided that Berkeley Perk is going to have to be worked into my daily routine at least a few days per week. This place takes my top spot for best cafe/coffee shop in the South End. I stopped in today for some breakfast and, eureka! Finally, a good egg sandwich! They've got good bagels, some nice morning pastries and a great drink menu offering hot, iced, and frozen options! two types of hot chocolate and some homemade chocolate chip cookies that looked ridiculously good. I couldn't resist trying their homemade cranberry, orange, almond biscotti. It is heaven dipped in your coffee or tea. This is also a good spot for lunch and a nice place to sit down if you prefer a more quiet atmosphere. The antique booths and that "off the beaten path" feel, give this place a little added charm that you won't find anywhere else in the neighborhood.

I stopped here after leaving a block party during Boston Pride, with some friends, and it was next door to Fritz. We were looking for a quick lunch, and this definitely hit the spot. The menu is extensive, but a little confusing because they serve hot food at certain times, but not at others. So while in line ready to order, I was looking at the wrong menu. Luckily, even their cold sandwich selection was outstanding. I ordered a a Californian Tuna sandwich on wheat bread with a diet pepsi. It was only $7, and was big! Good bread, tasty and fresh tuna salad, loaded with lettuce, tomatoes, and avocados. They also bring the sandwiches to your table, which is a little bonus I must say. Overall, highly recommend it if you're looking for a nice place for a quick bite.

The employees were very nice and helpful, even though they did completely mess up our fairly simple order. The food was simple and good. Coffee was good one day, overbrewed the other day, but ok in general. The place is very cute, with comfortable booths and armchairs.

The perfect place for a delicious cup of coffee, onion bagel, egg, cheese and sausage sandwich. Friendly helpful staff. I was not working so had time to read newspaper did not feel hurried. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I've been coming here for a couple of months, mostly because places I would prefer to eat at aren't open for business when I head out for work (e.g. Mike and Pattys) or would be detrimental to my health if I ate there every day (e.g. Billys). I usually keep it simple. Some type of coffee, bagel or scone. So the good... the staff is friendly, the coffee is excellent, the bagels are Iggy's and the homemade scones are nice and moist. The bad... service can be slow. There is only one espresso machine and if everyone wants a drink you'll be there for a bit. Cream cheese portions have gotten progressively smaller over the past few months, I'd estimate they put about 1.5 tbsp on the whole bagel, if not less. Overall its decent. My order has only been screwed up once in a few months and if they stopped skimping on the cream cheese I'd stop looking for a place to have breakfast at and come here most mornings. A solid three.

I love this place! I've been coming here often for the last few years and every time is a great experience with a super friendly staff and great food and coffee. I usually take food to go, but there is seating as well. The menu is great for both breakfast and lunch - prices are very reasonable for the area.

You know what's great about Berkely Perk? Practically everything. Start with the very helpful, not to mention patient staff, they make you feel right at home. It also helps that the place is laid out in a folksy, almost planned chaos with lounging chairs in the front, booths in the middle and stools with tall tables along the wall. It just works. Given that their name implies coffee let's start right there. It's a fine cup of joe and you should get involved with that. They must keep those pots good and clean because the coffee is smooth and velvety. As for the food, I was around for lunch. (The breakfast offerings looked good but, alas i lost out). I enjoyed the special Korean Chicken Salad Sandwich on Wheat bread. I enjoyed it very much. The chicken salad was really light. They had cilantro and cucumbers and peppers on it and it all worked. Followed that with a nice cup of coffee and left very happy! When in the area, I will definitely be back.

Cute. Homey. Cosy. No hassle. No stress. GREAT sandwiches. I'm a complete convert. Has old neighborhood charm. Unconventional but stylish layout. Time passes quickly sitting in this gem. The newspapers...the variation in seating...ace staff...perfect cafe latte. Puts me in a good mood this place!

I stopped in here because it was close to the hostel I was staying at and I was tired of drinking 7-11 coffee everyday. I had a coffee and one of their lunch sandwiches, but I don't remember which one. It was grilled with cheese, tomato, and avocado, I think. It was all very good, but it seemed a little over priced for just a sandwich and no side. If you are staying at the hostel that's nearby or if you work in the neighborhood, it would be a good place for a quick lunch. Just remember: CASH ONLY!! Service was very good.

A pretty Awesome little gem for breakfast and lunch. The breakfast omelets are served with a choice of coffee/tea/hot chocolate and hit all the right spots for a breakfast meal. The lunch sandwiches are made fresh and are HUGE. Best pick turkey sandwich with guacamole. Their coffee/tea/hot chocolates are delicious and organic and totally worth the slightly higher price. The cash only thing is a little weird but the food is worth it. Also their staff is wonderful!

Working near Copley I've tried all of the cafes and coffee shops on Newbury, Boylston and the general surrounding area, so pure curiosity sent me over a bridge and into the South End which is where I found wonderful Berkeley Perk Cafe. The cafe is quaint but has a great deal of tables to accommodate up to 20 people or so at any one time, which is great because this is definitely a local hang out. Most of the patrons are greeted by name - definitely a nice touch. The atmosphere welcomes you to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee while people watching out the large front window that is beautifully framed with trees and brick buildings across the street. The seating is comfortable and has a mix of booths, tall and normal tables and even some big comfy chairs. Now, the food... the food is wonderful and as a vegetarian I recommend this for couples or friends that are both herbivores and meat eaters. Some sandwiches I highly recommend: the chicken salad, avocado and tomato melt and the burrito. Best part? They have several types of freshly baked breads to choose from to personalize your sandwich. Oh, and what makes this an absolute favorite for me is their Big Train Chai - absolutely delicious and a great drink that is both a pick-me-up and a dessert to savor. Finally, for an awesome sandwich and a wonderful drink the tab doesn't usually go over $10, but remember to bring cash! They don't take cards.

Berkley Perk has delicious sandwiches and coffee drinks and is a great neighborhood lunch spot. I would stay here all day if I could, except that it doesn't have wi-fi, which is a HUGE bummer, and has contributed to it's demotion from 4 to 3 stars. Also, Berkley Perk only takes cash and for someone who rarely has cash on them... Lets just say I am not at all proud of my decision to go to Starbucks instead, but such is life...

Came to this cafe today, guided by reviews on yelp, and was pleasantly surprised to find a coffee shop that was comfy and homey, that I could definitely see myself spending quite a bit of time at. Unfortunately, after my long walk over here and the requisite stop at the atm, the guy at the counter said they're not serving food right now. :( I'm starving, so I will sadly have to go elsewhere. Minus one star for no internet. Minus one more for not serving food at 3:30 on a Saturday when they're open til 5.

Berkeley Perk often makes my day. I have a soft spot for the sweet people that work here. It makes me sad that they accept cash-only because sometimes I have to just watch from outside with my breath fogging up the glass since I don't have any bills. Oh, and the people-watching is supreme.

It was awesome having a quick cafe so close to the hotel we stayed at (The Chandler Inn), this one was right below the hotel. I had some hot tea and a chocolate croissant. Nothing special on either one, the chocolate croissant was like any other one I've ever had, although I did get the last one! Come early if you have specificity. Neat old looking interior and seemed like a locals type place.

Good coffee, good food, good service. Ghirardelli's hot cocoa is like heaven. Best coffee shop in the South End.

  • Rick S.

This was the ideal spot to lounge after a long morning being a tourist and exploring the South End and Back Bay. The cafe practically begs you to take a load off and people-watch through its big bay windows. As others have noted, the clientele seem to be on a first-name basis with the staff. Still, as a tourist, enjoying my time in Boston, I felt very welcome here. A good place for lunch and lounging.

I would stay here all day if i could. It's mostly a coffee shop, but it has wonderful sandwiches of all kinds. Cheap prices, delicious sandwiches, quality coffee, and just nice ambience. Any time of day, it's always a good time to drop in.

Berkeley Perk is my favorite lunch destination on my lunch break. They have fantastic sandwiches and wraps, and the staff is friendly and cheerful. My favorite: Veggie wrap with avocado on tomato basil. delicious. $5 I would have absolutely given them my 5 stars, but they are *CASH ONLY* and I rarely carry cash around these days. I would eat there much more frequently if they took cards.

  • John V.

Berkeley Perk has 5 star service, but only 3 star coffee. I really want to like this place, and make it my coffee destination, but I guess I've been somewhat disappointed by their coffee taste. I've never tried their sandwiches, but they seem to be pretty appetizing from appearance. Another down side, if you drink coffee in the restaurant they don't serve it in a coffee cup, perhaps you have to ask? I thought I saw some coffee mugs hanging behind the cash register. Hmmmm.

    (3)
  • Mike M.

In a city definitely not known for good service, the Perk is a friendly little neighborhood lunch spot where they never cop a 'tude on you. The lunch sandwiches are great, the menu is varied, and the ingredients are fresh. The coffee is too. But it's really the folks behind the counter that earn the joint five stars. They set a tone for the place that is friendly and relaxing. A great place to meet friends, or go with colleagues for lunch. One caveat: they only accept cash.

As a relatively new South Ender, I've recently been pushing myself to try new places in the neighborhood. This weekend's jaunt (more like a three block 'trek' but w/e) was to Bekeley Perk, and let me say, I was not disappointed. My boyfriend and I each got the Berkeley breakfast sandwich which consisted of your choice of bagel with cream cheese, scrambled eggs, and bacon. This item also included a small cup of tea or coffee with free refills. Our coffee was served in mugs so there was no guilt about wasting yet another piece of cardboard on a quick cup, and our delicious sandwiches were delivered to our booth on square white dishes. As we munched and sipped I read Lola (it's free ok) and it was so incredibly nice to just sit and enjoy something as simple as a cup of joe and a big roomy booth. The staff was very friendly and accomodating, and the main man behind the counter said he has been working there for 11 years. As someone who has worked in the hospitality industry before, that really says something about the quality of the place. All in all I would say definitely check out Berkeley Perk for a nice meal and some neighborly hobnobbing! PS: Usually I would take off a star for a cash only establishment, but since it's inexpensive just be prepared with some dolla bills!

Passed this place on the way from gym to another errand, and decided to grab a quick lunch here. Super! What it lacks in ambiance (a bit hurried-looking), it makes up for in the nice staff and great menu options. My sister is in town and we went half-sies on 2 things, a veggie wrap and a hot panini. Both delicious. The menu was pretty extensive so it looks like non-veggies will have a ton of options. One thing I really liked about the wrap and panini is that neither was too huge, but just enough food. We had just come from the gym and were feeling 'svelte' :) so it was the perfect amount of food. Will definitely be back in the next time I'm around this area, but I wouldn't make a trip out there for it simply due to distance from my apartment...

The first time I stepped foot in here, it was an alternative when my parents wanted to meet up on my lunch hour in the south end, and I was worried each restaurant would be full of patrons who have seen my bedroom. :( Rather than - "Hey, David. 'Sup with not calling me back?!" I was greeted with friendly service, fuckin' yummy sammichez and reasonable prices. The inside is kind of cheesy, like a Homegoods truck broke down outside, and the owner raided it, but with a touch of the coffee shop on Friends ... I was waiting for Phoebe to show up with an acoustic guitar. :( Whatevz, it's better than saying I had lunch at 7-11 next door.

This place rocks. The coffee is excellent and the food is top notch. The employees are super friendly and it is a great neighborhood joint. My only wish is that they would open on Sundays and add wifi ! Would love to be able to come here on the weekends and fire up the computer. Oh well.

I love Berkeley Perk. It's around the corner from my office so we use them a lot for an occasional meeting or I pick up lunch or breakfast there for my boss on occasion, etc. First of all, I really like the staff. They are always very friendly and helpful. Never rude or uninterested. I have plenty of complaints about customer service in this city so I'm always glad to find a place with friendly service! Secondly, though I try to bring lunch from home most of the time so don't often have an excuse to get food here, when I have it's always been very good. They have a lot of delicious sandwich creations and the bread and muffins etc. are always fresh and good. They have a nice selection of beverages and also a very pleasant space to sit and eat or drink in. If you live or work in the South End you should definitely make it a regular stop. If you don't, it might be worth it for you to trek on over anyway!

I ordered a black coffee here but when I went to pay with my debit card I was told it was cash only. (there was a very small note stuck on top of the counter saying this) I offered to come back and pay the $2 in cash later but the server said that's ok, she'd just cancel my order and she poured my $2 coffee away... This cruel and unusual behaviour turned a potential win-win into a complete lose-lose If you go here, please deduct $2 from your tip and give it to the person in line behind you

A commentary on the observational skills of yours truly is the fact that I exclaimed yesterday, while walking by this place, "Look, a new cafe!" Too bad it turns out they've been here for NINE years!.. A bit of a hike from my office, although, probably because I suffer from topographical cretinism and took the scenic route, it nonetheless offered a nice change from my usual hop over to Starbucks (will you judge me if I say, I had already gone to Starbucks earlier in the day?) It was empty inside, so I appraised the locale freely. There are high tops, bistro style tables, and a hunk of a booth in the middle, more reminiscent of a bar than a coffee shop. Scuffed up hardwood floors give it a worn in rustic feel. There is art on the walls, and reading material on the tables. The menu and drink selection is written in chalk on a blackboard (it's THAT type of place), and the baked goods are on display in cookie jars. The offerings include wraps, paninis, brownies, cookies, espresso bar, Italian sodas and smoothies. Notably, they have real mugs, I dig that. Pitui, paper cups, I spit on you in disdain! I had a cappuchino and a coffee cake. The cap was strong the way I like, but small. (Can you believe that? I complain that Starbucks serves you a bucket of coffee, but when I get a normal sized drink I'm bitching about it, yeesh...) The coffee cake was moist, rich, and cinnamony. Good thing, too, because despite it being only 2 pm, the baked goods jars were kind of bare. The South End lunch crowd must be voracious when it comes to their sweets. What a cute place, I thought, I hope they do well and stay in business! oh, what's that? Around for the last nine years? Oh. Ok, see you next week!

I walked by this place earlier this week and was intrigued - it looked so cute! So today, after the gym, I marched my starving self over there to check it out. Food - had a veggie wrap and fruit smoothie. All very standard The girl at the counter was very nice and we chatted about how dangerous it is going to get food right after the gym, since you want everything in sight (I almost started in on a banana and a cookie while I waited to pay but stopped myself). They have an assortment of baked goods - coffee cakes, brownies, cookies, etc - and i tried some of my friend's coffee cake. One of the best - moist and light. I also got a latte to go as we walked out. It tastes almost exactly like L'aroma's. Decor - Basically, it looks like you took a Cambridge cafe and transplanted it here. Old fashioned booths, tall stools and mosaic tables, big comfy chairs around low tables with The Globe, Weekly Dig, etc. The front windows let in tons of light. They have been around for 9 years and the place has that worn in feeling I love so much. Location - right next to the Chandler Hotel near the 93 overpass and around the corner from work. I could see myself becoming a regular. FYI - As i was waiting to pay, three tall gorgeous suits came and went. The.. uh.. people watching seems to be good here too.

Great healthy food options. A little pricey for sandwiches with no sides but they are still filling. DOWNSIDE: CASH ONLY! If they accepted credit/debit I'd go there more often!

Great place to grab and drink and hang out. Always exceptional drinks and even better service. The girls at the counter are always super friendly and genuinely interested in making the best coffee. Any request I have is taken care of with a smile every time. Would definitely recommend this place!

Super cute cafe. The perfect place to spend a leisurely morning reading the paper and drinking tea or to catch up with friends. The noise level isn't high, but not so stuffy, you feel badly about having a conversation. The breakfast options were ok. Nothing amazing, but the prices were reasonable. Watch the time if you park on the street -- the meters outside the cafe are watched all morning and when we left almost every car on the street had a ticket.

This is a great, low-key neighborhood coffee house. Comfy, eclectic furniture, great music, and some of the BEST coffee around! (They brew Equator Coffee). Ken, the guy who usually runs the show on Saturdays, is a great guy. My only wish is that the sandwiches were a bit more interesting... (maybe throw in a few more adventurous ingredients like goat cheese, caramelized onions, etc.?) But, the EXCELLENT coffee, the warm service, and the comfy atmosphere will always keep me coming back.

Ok.... so is it bad that my husband and I go to Billy's for pancakes and then end up in Berkeley Perk for coffee(s)? Yeah, that's what we do. I absolutely adore Berkeley Perk's hazelnut coffee. It doesn't taste like that sugary crack-like substance they sell at Dunkin'. Berkeley Perk also has comfy chairs, and I've been known to go in and get many coffee's during the week (sans husband) and get some yogurt for breakfast when I'm trying to eat healthy. The staff is wonderful, kind and friendly. I'm not a pastry person, but their cookies and pastries look fabulous. But until they start serving pancakes (or until I get a divorce and marry a man who *doesn't like* pancakes), we'll be eating at Billy's first.

This place is closed on Sunday - why? And I got some attitude when i went back for another honey spiced chai... the guy seemed to not know what it was and looked at me quizzically. I was so disappointed as i really wanted another. Oh well.

My review is still in-progress for Berkeley Perk. I recently started working around the corner from this cute little cafe, so when I have a sugar craving this is my stop. They always have a nice assortment of cookies, cakes, and brownies to choose from with which to satisfy my sweet tooth. I can't really *rave* about this place, as most of their sweets have been...enough to satiate my craving, but not really great. They have some really cool stuff on occasion, like a pumpkin whoopee pie, that excites me, but usually their treats just fall a little short of delicious. Their brownies are sweet and chocolatey but a little too dry, and the chocolate chip cookies are hard and crumbly and lack a brown sugary richness I expect of this kind. The staff are pretty nice, but it's often very crowded and hard to determine how the line moves, and they don't do much to help that problem. They do make a nice blended coffee drink from scratch - you actually see them pouring brewed coffee, hershey's syrup, milk, and sugar into a blender with ice, which is pretty darn cool, and their chai is a thousand kinds of delicious, like warm ice cream or something. But I do wish that the easiest place to get sweets and pastries from work had things a bit more delicious.

Bang....this is the place for a great casual lunch...I was doing some work on the newly renovated Chandler Inn ( check it out ) and having lunch here on a daily basis for the time I worked there ... great , friendly staff and quite personable too. The sandwiches are interesting the selection diverse and the people watching superb. I hadn't been in in a while , but I was in that part of town and had lunch the girls remembered me from last year and the food was just as good...I like consistency! I also like the not so polished look and the not a speck of pretense, just a darn good feel and vibe of this place. Please keep up the good work and I'll see y'all soon..... my next phase at the Chandler starts in March .

I admit I am basing this review solely upon one drink, but dammit, if they make this one drink THAT good, I can't imagine everything being anything by lovely. The drink in question is the iced chai. They make it with whole milk (skim available by request), and it can be best described as s somewhat thin frappe. It's rather sweet, with the familiar chai latte taste one might expect, and delightfully creamy. After grabbing one on my way to the Animal Rescue League, I had to come back on the return trip for a second, this time in a larger size. As for the cafe itself, it seems pleasant; I sat around reading and writing for a while, and it's got a very nice, somewhat cozy interior. It never got too crowded, which was nice; I'm used to 1369, where the battle for a seat is a fierce one. I would recommend stopping in here for your iced chai needs. If you're one of those people who doesn't like them sweet, you may want to pass. But I can't imagine you would want that. I mean, come on.

I am such a fan of Berkeley Perk. It's a great neighborhood coffee shop where I can catch up on my neighborhood news while reading the south end press over my iced tea, which is delicious! I mean, how good can it get...tea + ice, right? I don't know...there's something about it that makes it exceptionally refreshing. It's quaint and homey and any place I can get a good sandwich while enjoying it in a comfortable chair is fine by me. It's not as sceney as some other places in the south end; still, you can tell the people that visit are frequent returners, like myself!

I can't really rave about this place, but it's decent. I have stopped in to get tea and ice coffee a couple of times. I tried their cookies and a bagel, neither of which really wowed me. They only take cash and their hours are short. The kitchen closes early on the weekends and like another reviewer said, they tend to run out of a lot of items on their menu.

Solid, solid spot. Good coffee, great espresso drinks. Solid baked goods. Bagels from Iggys, sandwiches on fresh bread. Nice casual cafe breakfast/lunch. Really nice owner name Jordan. The staff will make an effort to remember your name.

I gave this place two tries and I got 2 burnt bagels! I could have burnt myself a bagel at home, not pay a few $$$ for it. I also picked up an iced soy chai latte which was like drinking straight sugar. Yuckkkkk

My big complaint with this place is that they never order enough food for their menu offerings. They're always out of things and I dont think it's because they're too busy.. They had one baked good left this morning before 10am, they were out of bagels, they were out of the bread I wanted, then came out to tell me they were out of the replacement bread. This is a common experience when I do go in there. I wish they would run it more like a business and less like (so it seems) a hobby. They close very early and have odd weekend hours. I like their coffee and the space is very comfortable.

Cute hole in the wall breakfast and lunch shop. Fresh ingredients. Their cappuccino is good. I got their salmon cream cheese bagel and it was delicious.

Decaf latte good. Cinnamon Walnut bread nice. Wifi (with an avail outlet) nice. Employees jovial. Ambiance: shabby chic. It's difficult to find a coffee shop that plays Every Rose Has A Thorn while you enjoy your coffee. This place delivers.

Holy crap, what a good lunch. I was really surprised to have enjoyed a soup and sandwich so much. Coconut thai soup with rice and chicken, and a turkey and avocado sandwich on really fresh, thick, and seriously good multigrain bread. Plus the service! They were just so nice and friendly and you can just tell that they really care about what they do. Good coffee too. I was recommended this place by my hotel, the Chandler Inn. Wish I had a local place like this in my neighborhood. Cherish it, South End!

For a what is basically a coffee shop the Perk has a fairly extensive array of sandwiches and the prices are are about the best around! Nice selection of hot and cold drinks and two cases full of bottled beverages. Comfortable place to sit eat and chat. Luckily it does not suffer as much from those (selfish) computer users that hog up seats and tables for hours on end at Flour and Starbucks. Better, healthier, cheaper food than the greasy spoon a few door down, more seating than Mike and Patty's across the Pike, more comfortable and fairly priced than Appleton Cafe and way less snobby than the Buttery.

The knowledgeable and friendly staff at the Berkeley Perk can make pretty much any espresso drink you'd like. Its a great space to bring a book to and kill a morning or afternoon.

I've stopped in a few times for lunch- it's about a ten minute walk from work. If it was closer, I'd probably go more often. I have to remind myself about BPC because it's not immediately around where my office is. Every time I go, I enjoy my experience. The staff is super nice and welcoming. I've always enjoyed my lunch. My favorite has to be the turkey pesto sandwich. I'm a sucker for pesto and this is made with pesto mayo. The interior is cute and casual- a few tall tables and a handful of booths. And some comfy chairs near the window. It feels like a neighborhood joint. The prices are about right. I think my turkey pesto costs under $7, but many are $5.95. They could do with condensing the menu a bit- it's almost confusing to look at. There are separate sections for hot and cold sandwiches which is almost redundant. They should just list whether you can get the sandwich "hot" in the sandwich description. I have to remember to stop in for breakfast sometime- they've got an extensive breakfast menu.

Just happened upon this cozy little spot today for lunch with a friend and we both left very happy and satisfied. Relaxed and cozy atmosphere with simple home cooked style food. I got a turkey pannini and my friend got a chicken burrito/wrap. both warm, toasty, well made, simple and fresh. my pannini tasted like the best grilled cheese you could imagine. turkey, avocado tomato and melted cheddar cheese on crispy grilled toasted 7 grain bread. Everyone is super friendly, they seem to know many of their customers by name. i really enjoyed my lunch there. I will definitely be back!

Stopped in here real quick for an iced coffee and their California Dreamin' wrap (turkey, avocado, lettuce, tomato, cucumbers). You can choose to get it as a sandwich or a wrap, and you can choose what kind of bread or wrap you'd like. I thought the wrap and coffee were good, and the wrap was only $6.25. I came around lunchtime and it was fairly busy, but nothing absurd.

Appalling customer service. Not sure if I would call it rude or just tragically unprofessional. I actually walked out leaving my food behind.

Best chai latte in Boston. I know, because I have tried just about every chai latte in Boston. Their chai lattes are vanilla (which people RAVE about) or spice (which I rave about). You can get your chai tea latte hot, iced, or frozen. Their grill is often shut off up to an hour before closing, which can be disappointing if you want a California tuna melt, but it won't affect a California BLT. Breakfast served until 10am Monday-Friday and until noon on Saturday. These cut-off times are strict. You will not get a breakfast sandwich at 10:01am on Monday. Credit cards ARE accepted; they used to be cash-only.

Very nice local breakfast location. If you love scrambled eggs and beagles - this is the place to go. For me the best hot latte in the city!

Came for a breakfast while staying in the area for a business trip. Service was okay, not the friendliest but not rude by any means. Ordered an egg white omelette and everything was made as requested. The omelette was quite good and not too oily (which I find is often the case). The iced coffee was also quite good. The only snafu: my order was given to someone else and they had to make me another one. They handled it well though and my order was out quickly.

3.5 stars rounded down to 3 Very cute cafe with nice decor. Menu is affordable and offers a lot of different options I ordered an omelette which came with an English muffin. Unfortunately the English muffin was toasted for a bit too long and was far crispier than an English muffin should be. The omelette was good, but I wasn't particularly full after my meal Would likely come back again, though this is really meant for a light breakfast in my mind

Wandering the South End we found the best coffee in Boston. Came back the next day for breakfast and discovered they have the best bagels also. Great friendly service

I visited Berkeley Perk Cafe on a recent trip to Boston. It was a rainy cold morning and we were just looking for a close place for breakfast that had solid yelp reviews. It's a quaint little cafe with a counter to order at. The menu is great but not completely well rounded for breakfast. Many different breakfast sandwiches. I had an egg white omelet with bacon and avocado. It was tasty but nothing to write home about. My boyfriend had a breakfast sandwich on a bagel that looked delicious. The prices were very reasonable which was nice to see. I think I would have preferred having lunch there after taking a look at their lunch menu. But... I must say that the service was wonderful! Everyone was so friendly, said hi right when we walked inside, they were very personable and helpful. It seemed like the neighborhood place that people visited every weekend. If you want a quick, laid back meal - visit Berkeley. If you want a fancy and unique breakfast/brunch experience - try somewhere else

This is the quintessential neighborhood coffee shop but so much more. I'm a virgin here just looking for a warm coffee and bite to eat in the south end. I usually run to Starbucks and luckily there was none around. The coffee was smooth, rich, and bold - just how I like it. I could sit here all day and drink it. Had the smoked salmon and scrambled egg on a bagel - real good but could have use a little cream cheese to offsite the dryness of the toasted bagel. What I really love about this place is the staff and ambience. They greeted everyone by their first name and if they didn't know the name - gave a warm good morning. You can tell immediately people come back repeated. The inside is cozy, casual, and just how a coffee shop should be. My only complaint is: they are closed on Sunday. But he'll - everyone deserves time off.

This is our go to spot for savory, "healthy", breakfast sandwiches! The bagels/breads are locally purchased from Iggy's bread in Cambridge, so they are fresh and have the right amount of chew. The bacon, egg, & cheese bagel sandwich is so good! The bacon is fairly lean and cooked to a nice crisp. The coffee is strong and has bold flavor, and to top it off, the staff is very friendly and helpful.

It's cute, quaint and has a nice ambience. Place was nearly packed when I went, the staff is nice and efficient, and the food is good in quality and portions but rather plain- the menu is full of items you could make yourself at home, and better. Only real downside: no wifi. I don't understand why.

I was walking around back bay and south end, looking for new cafes to try out and came across here. This place is cute, but not my taste. I've ordered a cup of drip coffee and their tomato avocado melt on a French baguette. The sandwich was good, but something you can easily make at home. The coffee, on the other hand, was not good. It tasted like it's been sitting in the pot for hours. I don't know if I'll come back to this place again.. Mainly because there's no wifi and the coffee was terrible.

Had the tuna melt on 7 grain bread. First off, love that I could get it on 7 grain! Second, the sandwich itself was amazing. However, I'm giving three stars because from where we were sitting (group of 5) we could CLEARLY hear the wait staff talking trash about us.... Not cool.
