High Blood Pressure at Applebee's

Most of the foods served at Applebee's restaurants are high in sodium. Unless you are visiting the restaurant or dining here in the group, there are hardly any options from the main meals if you wish to keep your blood pressure in check. You can rely on a few salad options though. If lucky, you may find low-sodium ribs as well at the restaurant.

Foods to Avoid at Applebee's for High Blood Pressure

Avoid Green Goddess Wedge at Applebee's. Broccoli Cheese Soup and French Onion Soup contain over 1000mg sodium and hence must be skipped as well. Skip all the chicken dishes and seafood at Applebee's except Grilled Chicken Breast and Baked Haddock without sides respectively. You must also skip Brunch Burger, Quesadilla Burger, Triple Bacon Burger, and Whiskey Bacon Burger at Applebee's. High sodium intake can be lethal for a high blood pressure candidate. High Cholesterol at Applebee's

Well, steaks and ribs go hand in hand with cholesterol. Being their signature dish, it will be a challenge to find low-calorie, healthy food for those concerned with their cholesterol levels. However, you can always opt for their salads and other light foods to keep the cholesterol in check.

On the pricier end, wish portions were a bit bigger (salads) but you get quality food every time, I love how when I walk by in the morning to work they have their daily specials written outside. Free Wi-Fi which is always a plus, especially the friendly staff! Coffee is a little too strong for me, but that is a good thing, right? I did however order a chai tea latte and it really wasn't good at all. But I'll be back for the food!

Unfortunately the sandwiches have gone a bit downhill since past years. I've had lunch 3X since management / ownership has switched and each time, I hope it turns back around but it hasn't. For example, my go to sandwich, the tomato mozzarella pesto: they are using this rosemary style ciabatta bread which is unnecessary in my opinion, standard mozzarella instead of fresh and when the sandwich is supposed to come with a spread, it's a light coating which leaves the bread dry and tasteless. My colleague who came with me last time ordered the chicken salad but unfortunately the order came out wrong 2X, the second time, he didn't bother to trouble them again. The soups are okay and the salads the same. Unfortunately the sandwiches on the menu haven't changed much but the quality of ingredients, and portions have. On the other hand, the desserts are terrific. With the inconsistency, it's really too bad, this used to be one of my favorite sandwich places in the south end.

I want this place to be awesome, and it's one of the only non-chain coffee/breakfast spots on my walk to work. Every time I go in, though, there's either a wait (once because both employees were making themselves coffee), my order gets messed up, or something else frustrating that makes it hard for me to want to keep going back. The food is pretty yummy-- sandwiches, bagel sandwiches, pastries are all top notch. The coffee is decent. However, my order is messed up more often than not-- we're talking a bagel toasted with butter coming without the butter. In terms of the wait, I of course understand that a south end coffee shop gets a little busy on weekday mornings. But it's the seeming lack of caring that the staff has to get people through the line quickly so that they can get to work, and to make the coffee shop look good, that bothers me. If you're ok with waiting and having to double check your food order, go to this spot. It's got potential, but the poor management of the place is really killing it

This place has a lot of potential, if only more thought and care when into the preparation of their food. Stopped by on Tuesday afternoon for lunch. Ordered the Arugula salad and added chicken to it, ordered the Spartan sandwich, and two cookies, the oatmeal raisin and the Better than Brownie. The Spartan sandwich was my 4th choice of sandwich as I was informed the previous three I attempted to order were not available. Sandwich was decent, too much olive oil on the sandwich overall. The cookies were good, but nothing noteworthy compared to other local bakeries. The biggest issue I had was with the salad. The chicken was definitely dry, looked like it had been sitting for a bit. Apples on the salad were cut into large portions, way larger than anyone could fit into their mouth without cutting it. The flavor was good for the rest of the salad. Overall, disappointed, but the bones of a great place seem to be there. Will be a while before I revisit.

If this place had some outdoor seating and made more than 2-3 maple oat scones every day, I'd give it 5 stars. I really love their maple oat scone (obviously) and their overall pricing for baked goods and sandwiches is better than Flour and the Buttery. But I often come here on a Saturday at 9:30am and they are already out of their best baked goods! Other pluses: the staff is lovely and they have mini doggie treats at the counter, which is always a sweet touch. :)

A hidden gem in Boston! The Appleton Café, a cozy little spot two blocks from Back Bay Station on the corner of Dartmouth & Appleton. This is the 2nd time I've been here and haven't been dissapointed. Try the chicken salad or the French Toast or anything for that matter. The staff is friendly and all of the entrées are made to order right in front of you. Not a lot of tables, and only one for a large group. There is some outdoor seating in the summer.

My favorite peanut butter cookies in Boston. Love them. Coffee is fine, sandwiches are fine, seating is pretty nice, wifi is great. Biggest challenge is that the room has pretty poor temperature control during both summer and winter!

It doesn't seem like it should be too hard to get breakfast right. There are many cafes in Boston that do. Again, since I live nearby the only reason I continue to go here is that it is in a convenient location. Since I last wrote a year ago - the kitchen situation has not improved. The wait times are horrendous and unapologetic (25 minutes for a breakfast sandwich on a Wednesday??) and (as I just re-tried the smoked salmon) the bagels are still stale and not toasted, ingredients such as tomatoes do not taste fresh. My husband just ordered a breakfast sandwich that was missing 2 of the 4 ingredients. I could literally walk to Foodies, buy all the ingredients I need, and cook myself a better sandwich in less time. The 2 stars are only because I will still go here if I want a cappuccino or iced coffee - but I've just made the executive decision that I'm never ordering food from here again.

  • Eric C.

I so want this place to be great but it never gets there. I keep going back hoping the problems will be fixed but it never seems to change. The wait times are insane. With nearly no one in front of you a wait for a simple sandwich can take 10-15 minutes. There always seems to be one ingredient missing or just something off. The other day I ordered a Tomato, Mozzarella, and Basil sandwich to go. The ingredients are literally in the sandwich name and when I got home there was lettuce instead of basil. Appleton Cafe is so close to being a good corner cafe for the South End but it constantly steps on its own foot.

I have been coming to the Appleton Café for many years before the newest owner had taken over. Despite some good food, the wait times here are dreadfully long - Do not go here if you are in a rush, even if you order on the phone... The two people at the counter can take a long time and both be back preparing large orders.. Every time I go there the person in line in front of me has some large order with 6 drinks and both people behind the counter are focusing on it instead of one person manning the register and taking orders for the rest of the line - thus, a 15 minute wait just to give the order... Inefficient... Next step- waiting for the order. The kitchen is extremely slow, the workers have ADD and have zero sense of urgency. This place would never last in NYC, but we are not in NYC... Frequently the kitchen staff makes mistakes with the orders- at least half the time I go there they mess my order up and almost always they mess up someone else's order. Someone please call Gordon Ramsay to get his Kitchen Nightmares show to the Appleton Café, stat!

I've come here because our guide recommend this place. I don't know why, because it's not a great place. I ordered a sandwich with an orange juice. The orange juice was not natural like they try it to look at , the baby carrots that are served with the sandwich are from the typical plastic bag and the sandwich was very normal nothing special. If you choose to eat there you have to do it with a plastic folk and knife. The staff are not very friendly neither.

  • Stella D.

When I ate here, I experienced slow service on the sandwich I ordered. They subbed Romaine in my Tomato/Mozzarella/Basil panini since they were out of basil. The resulting sandwich was soggy, bland and fell apart as I ate it. My cookie was dry and cakey - not my preference. I will come back here for a coffee and a quiet afternoon of work on the WiFi. But I think I'll skip the food.

I always try to give a balanced opinion when evaluating different establishments. When walking into this small cafe, the customer is greeted in a small quant environment that is modern, tidy, and simple with lots of warmth. Menu has a variety of pastries but the pancakes are the best kept secret. The coffee is ok but could be a little richer in taste. The reason for two stars instead of five stars is that the amount of food tends to vary depending on when you go. Orders are inconsistent, no one seems to know what you ordered, no one reads the ticket. Consistency is key. Other than that enjoy this little neighborhood jem.

Good coffee! Excellent egg sandwich and yummy pastries. Cute little place in a cute little block of the south end. I have only been when it was not crowded so the service was perfectly fine for me.

We love this place for breakfast. Great coffee, definitely try a ham and cheese puff, and the eggs ate delicious. Don't even get me started on the pastries. Only downside is that the place is frequented by bitchy ballerinas, but that's not their fault!

This cafe makes me happy. The girls behind the counter are always in a super good mood, and no matter how tired or cranky I am when I go in, I'm always uplifted walking out! Good little selection of pastries, sandwiches, salads. I always come in early, so I've only had breakfast, but I spy a gourmet grilled cheese on the menu with 3 types of cheese, banana peppers and garlic salt...I may have to find my way back here some afternoon...

Eh. If it wasn't for the service being so good it would've gotten 1 star. I read ALLL about how "fresh" and "big chunks of fruit muffins" were. Not so much. First of all, the place was FREEZING ( no wonder why NO ONE was in there), and their muffins didn't look good at all, not to mention there were only 2 left at 9:25 am. If people like your food why wouldn't you make a little more, maybe at least to get to 11 or noon?! Anywho, the 2 girls working there was the only reason I didn't walk out the door. They were so happy, cheerful, nice, social, and accommodating! I asked to heat my muffin and bread pudding. They did but not enough AT ALL. It was barely luke warm. The butter was good ( tasted homemade) but once I bit into the muffin it was ice cold, with cold butter, 2 blueberries, hard, not fresh tasting, and an after taste. Yucky. The bread pudding was the worst ( other than the fact that it actually had more than 2 blueberries and they were plump, fresh, sour, and sweet). That was ice cold with a terrible after taste.

Sometime so hit or miss. Today's breakfast that I get multiple times a week egg omelet with cheese and sausage had a slice of cheese thrown on top last minute like a burger and the eggs looked like they were beaten like they stole something. Best part is the owner looked at it while she packed my bag and thought this was quality. Off to green bean mobile cafe!!

As their close neighbor, I really, really wish Appleton had it together! My most recent experience there was a disappointment: (1) the waitress forgot to hand my order to the cook - resulting in a ~15 minute delay (2) my order was entered incorrectly, substituting bacon for sausage instead of smoked salmon, even though the substitution had been confirmed due to the extra cost... I'm a pescatarian, so this was quite upsetting (3) the cook seemed like a cool guy, but he didn't add toppings to my order (which I had paid for), slightly burned the toast and provided substantially less food than other times I've ordered the same menu item... (4) despite having made mistakes at every step of the process, nobody apologized along the way! incredible. As others have pointed out, this place is unfortunately a hit-or-miss!

We used to live in the South End where Appleton Cafe is a best kept secret. There are so many great little eateries, bakeries and coffee shops in the South End, but many of them are over-hyped and over-crowded. Appleton always seems to have just the right amount of people, but never too many, and it's hard to go wrong with any of their sandwiches or baked goods. Best of all, you can always find a seat. No need to wander the streets of the South End while your croissant crumbles all over you!

My high school friend and I decided to do some catching up here at this cafe. I ordered the egg salad (w/o avocado) sandwich on multi-grain bread with a side of baby carrots. And I have no idea why I ordered the passion plum tea but I did, and it ended up being super delicious. It was a happy accident, if you will. Service was friendly and quick, and the whole transaction took about 5-7 minutes. I kid you not. It was impressive. I hadn't even fixed my hair from coming in and my sandwich was already made. Woohoo! My friend ordered their special of the day. I don't remember the name of it but it was a chicken sandwich and it tasted like Vietnamese pho. I know this because my friend and I traded the remaining halves of our sandwiches. (Is this even grammatically correct? I'm confusing myself. And you.) After stuffing my face with the sandwiches, I went up to order a red velvet cupcake. The cream cheese frosting was JUST RIGHT which was a plus for me. Some places seem to toss an entire bag of sugar into their frosting, enough to give you a couple of cavities. Not here. It's sweet but not enough to make you cringe and want to down a cup of coffee. That said, I would get it again. Atmosphere was good and relaxing. Just didn't like how there were crumbs on the tables and chairs. Some cleaning could be done. Otherwise, I did enjoy my time here.

Great spot for breakfast. I had a breakfast burrito (very filling), and also got to sample the French toast with fruit topping. Both very good. Would recommend for a pleasant way to start the day. Outside seating was beautiful on a spring day.

I've been going here for about 5 years, but the experience seems to vary. Over the past year or so, prices seem to have risen a little while the food and coffee have been getting a little worse. Appleton still feels like a neighborhood place, but it seems to be tired and missing some warmth/love compared to the old days. I've had a streak of sandwiches that either have way too much mayonnaise (grilled chicken and avocado) or too much butter (toasted bagel). The bread is also not great (little taste). They should consider ordering from a great local bread company like When Pigs Fly. For breakfast, I've also noticed the muffins becoming smaller and less variety for the baked goods in the morning and throughout the day. Bagels are still a solid choice. I'm still waiting for them to bring back English Muffins again. As for the coffee, I think their regular blend is a bit watered down and burnt tasting. I'd love if they started using beans from counter cutler or stumptown. There is also a difference in the skill of the baristas. Some are great, while others seem to just get by. It would also be nice to have some comfy chairs or couches to relax in (although space is tight). I really want Appleton to be great as it's my local cafe. Just not seeing or tasting that greatness lately.

3.5 is exactly right. But since I can't give that, I'll round up. Average sandwiches, but big and well priced. Don't go out of your way but definitely a good place for the work lunch rotation. Chicken Caesar wrap is too lemony. The chicken sandwich was very good. And the breakfast sandwich was good, but the bagel it can on was not. That's all my knowledge.

Today is a sad day because it will be the last time I ever go to Appleton Cafe. Despite the girl behind the counter with brown curly hair and a horrible attitude I have always enjoyed the food. However, after not being treated as a regular customer (I have been going a few times a week for years now) it has become hard for me to enjoy coming to Appleton. Finally, today was the last straw. After it took over 20 minutes to get a cup of soup, it was way too hot to even eat, so I had to wait another 15 minutes for it to cool. 35 minutes for a quick cup of soup seems crazy to me. I believe that ever since the staff changed over this place has slowly gone down hill, despite the recent renovation. I believe with a strong change in customer service this place can one day get back to where it once was, a mediocre lunch place close to my work.

I just don't understand......it's hit or miss......mostly miss.....I want to like this place......I want to support it....but every time I go back it's frustrating to no end.....the food is so inconsistent ......soup....unedible.....I went in today and got a chicken burrito ......looked great....bit into it and it was nothing but old chicken ....hard old chicken....threw most of it out. PLEASE get some people behind that counter that KNOW food. As I was waiting for mine a man was returning his with frustration....he wanted wheat bread and got something else.....I mean really when you can't get bread right.......my mistake is I go back expecting something to change and it never does....same mess....no more.

Best breakfast sandwich I've had in awhile. I grabbed an egg, cheese, and bacon sandwich here before my visit to the salon, which I knew was going to take 2+ hours. And nothing is worse than having to sit with tin foil in your hair for 2 hours while your stomach growls gargoyle noises at you. I really would've been satisfied with some munchkins or a random Fruit Roll-up I found on the ground, in all honestly. I was starving. But I'm glad I stumbled upon Appleton on my way to the salon. I savored that breakfast sandwich--savory, filling, and well, really really bacon-y--as the smell of bacon made its way over to other hungry girls getting their hair did.

Appleton Cafe is conveniently located on my street. However, they should be ashamed of what they charge for their products. I picked up two coffees and two yogurts and spent $17.00! I understand businesses need to make a profit, but that's a bit much.

Grabbed some iced tea and a breakfast burrito. Realistically it was a breakfast wrap. I began to eat it as one would a burrito to discover half way through the eggs and avocado and other deliciousness oozing out of the side. This occurred because the "burrito" was sliced in half like a wrap. Overall it was tasty and I'd go back.

Appleton is by far my favorite coffee, breakfast and/or lunch spot in the South End. They have quality drinks and food, prices are totally reasonable, and the staff is always happy to see new and familiar faces alike. It's a farther walk from Harrison Ave than other similar places, but I've never been dissatisfied. The breakfast burrito is the best I've had in the South End (compared to 2 or 3 other well-known coffee shops), and the Chicken Chacarero is my favorite lunch sandwich (order it spicy, of course). The green beans may throw you off at first, but they give the sandwich a pleasantly fresh crunch. The outdoor seating is limited, so it's best to try to get there just before or after the rush if the weather is nice.

The breakfast portions are great. Today I ordered the breakfast panini (egg, bacon, arugala, and cheese) and the veggie omlet. The panini was okay. The presentation was in a heart. The omelette was definitely wayyy to oily. The plate had the omelette sitting in oil. At least they are open at 7am!

I've been here way more than I've checked-in, almost 3 times a week since June of 2012. The staff is great and even though they don't know my name after almost a year, they definitely know my order by now. I usually get a breakfast burrito and cappuccino to go, and at times I come back for lunch to chill out inside. It's never too loud or packed during lunch time which is perfect if you crave downtime during lunch and not be crowded like at Flour around the area. And at the end of lunch if you're feeling ill-disciplined, they have delicious pastries and cookies. You know you want it ;-)

I came in right after close (didnt realize it ad they hadnt locked up) and they were ever so hospitable. Seems like a place that caters to both community and corporate. Dogs are allowed which I love. Got the arugula/apple/manchego/walnut salad. It was great though I'd have liked more manchego. Their mushroom soup which I also had was terrific.

The coffee (not bitter, nice and nutty flavor) is really good so I had a hard time giving them only a 3, but this morning's breakfast was like someone was not trying. I had the breakfast burrito. Filling a burrito to the brim is more of a lunchtime thing, but I never complain about extra food. However, when it becomes such a mess that you cannot eat it without making a mess of your hands, face and table, then I take issue - especially when it's the morning time. This burrito was easily 3 inches in diameter and not even folded well. The onions were still crunchy. I bet if you took a poll, most people would agree that they do not want to start off their day with raging onion breath - so maybe cook those more or list them as a topping separate of the salsa so people can opt out. The eggs were undercooked and watery leading to a further leaky tortilla. There was no cheese. Yes, that is right, no cheese on a burrito with eggs which definitely would have held it together much better. All the guacamole (which was described by staff as avocado - not the same thing) was in one tiny corner. I DO like that it comes vegetarian and with black beans and a whole wheat tortilla. Finally, I think they should list all the ingredients on the board and stop trying to break a world record with the world's largest breakfast burrito so it can actually be eaten.

I picked up two baked goods when I stopped into Appleton Cafe, though I didn't eat either of them until I got home later. I had a faux Hostess cupcake, chocolate with chocolate ganache and a white squiggle on top. The cupcake was moist and delicious, but there was no cream filling! I honestly wouldn't have minded that, since I don't need filling in a good cupcake, but the white Hostess squiggle on the top definitely gives the impression that you'll be getting a white cream filling too. But overall, I enjoyed the cupcake. I also had a chocolate peanut butter cookie, which was large and full of peanut butter chips, but was unfortunately a bit too dry. It definitely would have benefited from a glass of milk to dip it in.

I went to Appleton in hope of getting a high quality grilled cheese and soup for lunch today. Unfortunately I was left with a bad taste in my mouth, literally. The soup left much to be desired - I got chicken noodle which I can only describe as a cup of brine with some overly curried chicken thrown in the mix. The ratio of stuff to broth was exceptional, unfortunately the "stuff" was over seasoned and the broth was VERY salty. My "grilled cheese" was more like pressed cheese on bread. No butter. I repeat, the "Grilled Cheese" was not made with butter. Sacrilege in my opinion. While the combination of cheeses and peppers was quite tasty, there was much room for improvement on the preparation. In concept, Appleton's foods are quite well thought out and imagined. In execution, Appleton leaves much to be desired. If you're looking for a high-end gourmet eatery in the south end, stick to Flour around the corner.

Appleton Cafe is consistently great. With an art studio around the corner, I visit frequently for strong coffee, fresh cookies and sandwiches. The food is delicious, fresh and prepared quickly. Try their veggie breakfast burrito--grilled with egg, avocado, cheese and tomato. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner! The interior tables and decor leave something to be desired. I would probably choose Appleton Cafe as a meeting place for friends more often if the atmosphere were less like a cafeteria. But when it's sunny, the outside tables are lovely. Best of all their staff is smart, kind, quirky and unpretentious. A truly local find.

Let's start out by saying that they have a great breakfast burrito! The staff are usually friendly. The coffee is decent (I have had much better in my travels). This is a great place to go with a couple friends after a night of going out and being lazy to make your own breakfast and you want a great burrito. Nothing really makes this place pop for me thus the three star review. It is a calm serene feel (little bland/over played design). It is an overall good average place. If you come here you will be content and leave satisfied. Side note, they had really good granola for the yogurt!

Appleton Cafe is a local gem. I agree with most other reviewers - the egg sandwich is exactly what you want... yummy, substantial, not fussy, delicious. I highly recommend getting an egg, cheese and avocado sandwich on a wrap. Yum. Also love the coffee and croissants. The only negative thing I have to say about this cafe is that it's not AS great as it used to be... because it no longer sells the pre-made meals I relied on so frequently for dinner. It was so easy to pop in on my way home and pick up a few cooked chicken breasts or pieces of steak and grilled asparagus. Also, I wish they sold MEM chai instead of the nasty stuff they make. There is no reason to make chai out of a box or can when you can brew the good stuff so easily. I do hope that Appleton Cafe is around for a very, VERY long time.

Nice place. Good coffee, good pastries, and nice breakfast burrito. I've never been here for lunch. Their chocolate chip cookie is more cakey than cookie, which is a nice change. The place is in a very nice area of the south end and it has benches and tables outside so you can sit and enjoy the weather. Great place. I'd definitely recommend it.

My partner and I are longtime residents of the South End, and the Appleton Cafe- under the current management- is the least neighborhood friendly cafe/bakery! I usually keep my negative thoughts to myself, but the last two times I was there - I made two suggestions to the owner and was shocked at her dismissal of my comments, and the lack of sensitivity to customers' needs. The first time might be explained by having a bad day (though it was always in the am), but the second and third tell me something else is going on. I don't expect every suggestion to be implemented, but I can't help think about it every time I walk by i.e., on my daily walk to the post office or trip to Foodies. Thank goodness for The Buttery (the best scones in town) and Starbucks (much better coffee). The only reason that Appleton Cafe is worthy of two stars is because the employees - for the most part - couldn't be nicer!

Great place if you're in the area. Everything a la carte, so sandwiches (which are big) don't "come" with a side except pickle or baby carrots. Fairly quick, and tasty sandwich. Not a ton of seating inside or out, but solid place if you're working or around the area.

Cute little non-corporate bakery/coffee place housed between Back Bay and the South End. Food is really good, especially the muffins (which come in a variety of flavors, including Raspberry Lemon and Blueberry Pear (both quite good). Also coffee/hot chocolate as well. A great alternative to the normal coffee experience

For most of 2011-2012, as if on a clockwork schedule, I'd roll out of bed and disguise my PJ's by throwing on a trench coat and sleepwalk my way to Appleton Cafe for my 7 am cup of coffee. It was one of those places where I just had to nod, they knew what I wanted and the only question was, Small or Medium? The cheery smiles and friendly service paired with high quality locally sourced coffee, wholesome breakfast options and an espresso machine that did some sort of magic that turned coffee into manna; easily made Appleton one my favorite coffee shops in Boston. The fact that they have plenty of seating, outlets, free WiFi and a solid lunch menu made it the coffee shop where I spent the most amount of time because it would practically turn into my office on some days. And they have a dinky patio and a few benches which are great for soaking in some sun and max out Boston's short lived summer. So this seemingly simple café serves many MANY purposes, and is a great place for you to get your morning caffeine fix, something for in between and to pick up desert or snacks in the evening; that is if you can make it there before their 5 pm closing time. Despite my tumultuous love-hate relationship with the city, I do miss it sorely, mostly for all these bizarre little rituals I had; Appleton being one of them. So if you find yourself looking for a coffee shop or a space to set up shop and get some work done in the South End area - stop by. I think you'd like it.

I want to like this place, but they just can't get it done. I went this morning to get a breakfast burrito. The place was empty with 3 cooks in the kitchen and it took them over 20 minutes to make my sandwich. The burrito taste's great, but if you don't have all day to wait then skip this place.

Fancy renovations have taken place and... ... wait for it... ... Wi-Fi! 5 stars for a million years. This is my favorite cafe in the whole wide world. Love, Caroline P.S. Invest in some leg balancers for the wobbly tables. It doesn't warrant a subtraction of a star, but come on. Fix that shit!

I love this place! Great breakfast, nice, clean seating area with tons of natural light. A good variety of rotating sweets, although the chocolate croissants tend to sell out early on weekends. Way better than any other spot in the South End for casual breakfast (Buttery could learn a thing or two). Shout out to Nicky for consistently awesome, friendly service!

Their chocolate cupcakes with the vanilla butter cream frosting are the real deal. Seriously taste just like my Grammy's chocolate cake with butter cream frosting. I was actually trying to look in the back to see if Grammy had come back to life to work as the cupcake baker, that's how ridiculously similar they are. These are not your fake, overly sugary grocery store cupcakes. Appleton's cupcakes are 100% made from scratch, the cakes look a little uneven, as they should. Perfection. Their breakfast sandwiches are also delicious. They are made to order, super fresh and yummy. In general I find that Boston has a shortage of cafes that serve great breakfast sandwiches (No, Dunkin Donuts does not count). This place hits the spot.

Silly New Yorker comes to Boston and expects a large iced coffee to be, well, medium-ish. But this is Boston! This is the place where iced coffee takes the place of water! A large iced coffee is HUUUUUGE. This is a veritable bucket of iced coffee and 3 hours later I am still working on it. I enjoyed the pumpkin bread as well.

I went to Appleton with my co-workers for lunch, i order Chicken wrap with avocado, bacon and mayo, not only was the wrap beyond delicious, the staff were nice and friendly, the service was also fast. This is a small cafe where you can have a decent lunch under $10

Very nice staff. Breakfast panini wasn't a panini. It was toast that was slightly too toasted and blackened. It sounded like the egg bacon cheese and arugula would be good but I could do better with a half-attempt at home. The pumpkin whoopee pie was good but there was something gritty like sand in 3 of my bites. Will I make an attempt to come back? Certainly not.

Mmmm. This place had a ton of veg options and my friend and I both agreed that everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. Our sandwiches came out within 5 minutes and I wanted everything off of the menu. I agree with other reviewers that the place could have a warmer atmosphere, but who cares when the food is so good.

Appleton has truly delicious sandwiches for lunch and breakfast! Yesterday I tried their breakfast burrito (eggs, black beans, sour cream, avocado, salsa, and veggies). The staff let me switch out eggs to egg whites! Really excited about this. I could eat that everyday!

If you are an out-of-town Yelper looking for a place with "character" this is not your spot. The interior looks like a cheap Starbucks. You order at the counter and there are tables with plastic chairs. Go for the food and the coffee.

Appleton Bakery Cafe changed management recently. They shut down for a renovation and reopened this past summer. Today was my first day back, and I was happily surprised at what they've done with the interior. But the biggest highlight is that they offer ALMOND MILK when making your coffee or latte. That is so rad. And they have non-diary sorbet made with water and fruit. I noticed on the menu, they offer items for little foodies, too. PB&J or grilled cheese sandwiches for $5. Got your laptop with you? They offer FREE wi-fi. I'll definitely be back.

A lovely neighborhood gem that has survived the test of time. I try to make Appleton a stop on my way to work in the mornings, most of the time just for coffee, but every so often for a bagel and cream cheese too. Lightly toasted, but still oh so crispy and chewy, and with a heavy cream cheese spread, these bagels have kept me from trying the muffins that I hear so much about. They always look so fresh and fluffy in the glass case as I'm waiting in line, but savory usually wins out over sweet in the mornings so I have yet to try one of the award-winning muffins. The lunchtime sandwiches are all adorably named after different types of apples. My fave is the Macintosh, which has turkey, havarti, the zingiest dijon mustard I've ever tasted, and, of course, sliced apples. The service is quick and pleasant, but like most places, it's all about the timing. You can be in and out in a flash if there isn't a line, but every so often I'll swing the door open on a morning walk to work, and the line is backed all the way up to the entrance. It's always worth the wait, though, and it gives me more time to stalk the muffins.

Is it asking too much for some LOW CARB options??? It really grinds my gears that it's so impossible to find ANY sort of bakery or coffee shop that sells anything but HUGE muffins and greasy breakfast sandwiches and watered down coffee. The only saving grace of this place is that the staff is very friendly, and they make really awesome tea (in their own constructed loose-leaf tea bags.) I hear the sandwiches are good, however the rolls that they put them on are GIGANTIC and would call for more insulin than my body would know what to do with. I'll stick to eggs at home, sans the toast.

After driving aorund the South End for a bit trying to find a parking spot and an open place for breakfast my mom and I settled upon this. (mind you, my mom is not from Boston and could not handle the endless driving around- she even suggested that we give up and go to Dunkin Donuts!!!) Well we both got the Southwestern breakfast wrap. They were good but I thought they were a bit pricey at (4.50) since they were just for the wrap and there was no meat in it. They actually read our order wrong and only brought 1 wrap so we split that and waited for the other one to split. The second one was much better than the first since there was more cheese in it. I did like how the wrap had been pressed and grilled but thought it was basic overall. I have to go back to try a cupcake. Gotta rate them all in the city. (On a sad side note- my mom got a salad and fruit salad for her amtrak ride back to CT- her salad dressing opened and got over all her stuff. So there was no dressing for her salad and the dressing somehow got into her fruit salad. Now it would be common sense for a to-go salad dressing to be wrapped a bit more carefully. Oh well.)

I love Appleton Cafe! I have ordered catering from them on a weekly basis for over a year and have always been more than pleased with their product and service. I've said it once and I will say it again... The muffins here are OUT OF THIS WORLD! Crispy on top, soft and cakey in the middle, but not too sweet. And all those yummy flavors... Strawberry, Blueberry, Raspberry Chocolate Chip, Banana Chocolate Chip.... Keep em coming Appleton.

"Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, Haaaaappy birthday to.... who?" "CRAP." Thanks to my terrible memory I've been put in that situation numerous times. I'm terrible with remembering birthdays. Thankfully Appleton Bakery always had great cakes in times of emergency. I worked down on the corner of Appleton and Tremont, and used to dash (legit run!) to pick up a cake or a box full of cookies for a quick work party. The staff was always friendly and willing to help in a time of need.

This place epitomizes Boston mediocrity. It's in a beautiful neighborhood (South End) and looks very promising on the outside. Then... you go inside, and it all goes downhill from there. The interior is gloomy and weirdly fluorescent (despite the lack of fluorescent lights). The kids who work there don't know about food. I ordered the scrambled eggs on a toasted roll, but I asked if the eggs would just be microwaved or if they actually scrambled eggs--- they said they would not be microwaved. What I got was the closest thing you could possibly have to microwaved egg without nuking it. The bread was not quite chewy, not quite soft, just... bland. The eggs were rubbery and flavorless. Please! Boston cafe and restaurant owners! Learn from your other Northeastern metropolises! It IS allowed to TRY. Could you at least pretend that the locals have expectations for the quality of their food?

Let's clear something up right from the start: four stars for the sandwiches, three stars for the coffee offerings. Okay, I feel comfortable continuing now. Appleton Bakery Cafe is quickly becoming a weekly or at least biweekly lunch option thanks to its incredible sandwich that combines numerous loves of mine: apple slices on a sandwich, tart sauce to contrast the sweetness, havarti cheese (I'm still not-so-secretly hoping they get brie in soon), and, the most important factor, being named after my computer of choice, macintosh. Yes, this sandwich makes walking through the wind tunnel that is the Hancock Tower more than worth it, even on a rainy day with an inside out umbrella. I'm totally not speaking from experience.... fail. In terms of coffee, espresso, what have you to get your hands all shaky and stuff, it's a nice surprise. You don't go to Appleton Bakery Cafe just to get your espresso for the day. Oh, no. It's more like a nice surprise when you're there for a delicious sandwich. Like, "Oh, wow. I didn't order toast with my omelette, IHOP, but I appreciate the surprise. And, it's already buttered up with my favorite jelly too. Wow, you just get me." Yea, it's exactly like that. If you work in Back Bay or South End, do yourself a favor and get an incredible sandwich, both in quality and value, from Appleton Bakery Cafe. You'll be back again. I promise.

I went to Appleton today with some friends to kick back and sample some of their desserts. I had the chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting and a Ginger Bread tea for under $5.00 (with tax)--not a bad deal at all. It's close (walkable) from the Back Bay T station (orange line). The interior is cute with lime green walls and some poster art. It's definitely small-ish in there, but nice. I may be back. :-)

I wish I could give this place more stars because the food really was amazing. Unfortunately one star has been deducted for the lack luster staff (they made smiling seem like a challenge) and the weird layout of the place. There are two counters in two separate rooms, one seems to be were you order sandwiches b/c you'll find the sandwich menu only in that room, the other room houses the bakery products. It seemed as though you could order either item from either room, but I'm still not quite sure of that. The other star was deducted because of the steep pricing. While my bacon, egg and cheese sandwich was made with fresh, delicious ingredients, it set me back $6.25. Add a cupcake and a bottle of water and it cost me under $11. A bit too much for a late breakfast served without a smile.

If you're up for a HUGE iced coffee, this is the place to go. The food is decent, but I find that the sandwich I ordered was on the salty side. My caveat is that I tend not to salt my food much if at all. It's a great place to go meet a friend to chat early in the morning or at a random time in afternoon b/c seats are usually available. That being said, the space is not well utilized, and I believe they could add more tables and chairs if configured differently. The croissants and bagels are pretty standard fare. I have to agree that the muffins are good, but don't hold a candle to Flour a few blocks away. If you're truly a foodie, I'm not sure if this place will cut it. If you're looking for quiet place in a cute neighborhood and don't mind paying a bit of a premium price, this is your kind of spot. Warning: Appleton's closes at 5pm and often has a very limited menu after 4pm.

A true gem. Delicious muffins with creative twists. I adore the Morning Glory muffin. (Plus it's healthier than other muffins because they use yogurt to mix the batter...) mmm I wish I could ditch work now and head over to the South End for a tasty treat! There are a few tables. Sometimes I like to study or do work there because it has a good balance of background noise and a chill atmosphere. Plus, it's mostly filled with gay men, so I am way less distracted than at other coffee/study spots in town...

Appleton is a cute little coffee shop just over the back bay border, into the south end. Their menu is very limited, and only open until 4:30pm, but they are good with the basics. Perfect spot for a quick coffee and breakfast sandwich, and they have free wifi!

I had the "gala" sandwich from Appleton today and it was delicious! The "gala" - roast turkey, bacon, sliced apple, smoked gruyere cheese lettuce, red onion, and honey cup mustard on toasted bread. The sandwich is packed with yummy turkey. It is on the price-ier side at just under $10 for a sandwich but the quality is much better than some of the chain sandwich places. Also, the staff is really friendly!

The cupcakes here are terrific - the frosting is both soft, melt-in-your-mouth, creamy delight AND substantial, rich, and filling. The vanilla frosting and chocolate base is a beautiful combination that pairs very well The cappuccino is excellent - clean, clear coffee flavors with expertly frothed milk. Yum!

The perfect morning pick-me-up! The coffee is great, the pasteries are wonderful and the made to order breakfast sandwiches are the perfect thing to start your day. There are days where Appleton honestly makes my day. I work down the street and on days when I dont bring my own lunch, I always go to Appleton. EVERYTHING is good there. I love their bread, their sandwiches are all phenomenal. I always try the specials, they've got some great ones and they never dissapoint. I'm not a soup person, but I'm addicted to their Chicken Noodle Soup! It's incredible, and perfect and just a little bit different each day which makes it unique and homade. Everything there is fresh and homeade and trust me, it wont let you down. I only wish it were bigger, I cant imagine what they would do if they could make a dinner menu, YUM! Also, the people that work there are so sweet and friendly, and remember your name. Of all the lunch spots that I've ventured to in my 6 years of working around here, this is the best, hands down.

I've tried their chocolate cupcake and a lemon tarte the other day and it was amazingly moist and fresh! especially I like the chocolate whipped cream on top of the cupcake! usually the whipped cream tastes very oily and sweet but their own whipped cream wasn't that sweet nor oily. I wil definitely going back here to get some more cupcake! yumm :)

There's nothing really wrong with Appleton Bakery so I give it a solid three stars. I've tried this place out a couple of times - the bagel was chewy, the banana chocolate chip muffin was dry, the iced coffee was great, and the service was friendly. If you happen to be walking through the South End and have a craving for a quick bite or delicious caffeine pick me up I'd say this place is A-OK. But I'd most likely tell you that Uptown Espresso Cafe or Blunch are the better cafes in the neighborhood ;) You're welcome.

I have been here a number of times for coffee (hot and iced), muffins and cookies. The muffins are great, they offer a wide variety and some great healthier options. Their sandwiches look good as well as their breakfast menu. They have always been crowded when I have stopped in. I like their renovation but all the tables were filled the last two times I was here. I think its great that they have free Wi-fi here. I would love to come at a slower time and enjoy one of their sandwiches. I never knew about the Almond Milk option but cannot wait to try out an espresso drink with Almond Milk--I never find that!

Today, Appleton joined the ranks of many a coffee shops in the Boston metro area and became my office for the afternoon. After searching Yelp, and learning that many of my top choices in the area didn't have outlets for my Mac (but had free WiFi) I passed Appleton's and popped in to scope the scene. Outlets? Check. Lattes? Check. Baked goods? Check. Plenty of seating? Check. Lunch sustenance? Check. Despite the near-blinding neon walls, Appleton fit all of the basic requirements for an afternoon of clickety click click clicking around. There was an immediate place to perch with a plug in proximity, the coffee was flowing (complete with soy milk and sugar-free vanilla) and case full of sugary goodness! Though I'd already eaten lunch, it's worth noting that Appleton's has sandwiches, soups and a daily list of specials that sometimes includes hummus and hot dogs! My consumption included a large latte, a molasses cookie and a chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing. Great coffee, and served in a mug, not a paper cup! I'd been searching the city over for molasses cookies and this huge version happily satiated, though the edges were a bit dry and hard. The cupcake was good...moist, but the icing was a bit too sugary for my taste. For those who have an office space, the good news is that Appleton's is the perfect spot to grab coffee on your way there, grab lunch and bring it back there, or pick up some yummy treats on your way home from there. That is, if your lucky enough to get out of the office before 5pm...cause that's when they close!

I love coming here for a bagel with vegetable cream cheese. It's so good that my fiance who does not like cream cheese will ask me to go get a bagel on the weekends. The bagels are perfectly crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Heaven!!! The cream cheese is the best vegetable one I have ever had. Seriously. It must be made daily because I have been there when they have run out. I opted to come back the next day rather then get something else from their baked goods. That is how much I like them there! There are plenty of other great menu items. The sandwich's are named after types of apples which I think is great idea. They appear small, but I never feel hungry after finishing one. Or maybe I am so used to the mega sandwiches at other places that I do not know what is a good portion size. At any rate, they are slightly pricey given that you do not get anything with the sandwich. No chips or salad! I have had the drip coffee there on occasions. It's coffee. Nothing too amazing, but that does not bother me because the food more than makes up for it. I care more about the food then I do the beverages. The people who work there are very nice and we have always had a good experience whether we eat there or take it home. They are super friendly and prompt. They once messed up our order or maybe gave it away to the wrong person, but they apologized and we got our food eventually. They even gave us a gift certificate to come back again for a free meal on them for the inconvenience. That was really nice of them!

I totally *heart* sandwiches, but since I stopped eating meat, it's been hard for me to find an equally-satisfying-veggie-sandwich-experience. Appleton bakery has come the closest so far with their "melrose" - it was positively stuffed with veggies and dressed in a balsamic vinaigrette. Some people are complaining about the prices - and yes, even my vegetarian sandwich was about 8 bucks - but I think it was a fair deal. My sandwich was enormous, and everything tasted fresh, crisp, and delicious (no soggy veggies here!). You get your choice of bread (I got the baguette - no question) and cheese, and there is no price bump if you get the mozz (which I highly recommend, what is better than those hearty slabs of cool, slightly watery mozz?). All in all, a good experience. I'll be back.

This little place won my heart with its hot chocolate. I don't care if it WAS Swiss Miss or Nestle or whatever brand, it was served to me in a white minimalist mug along with a coconut chocolate chip cookie. The staff is not friendly in that I-Have-To-Be-Nice-To-You-With-This-Fake-Smile-Although-I'd-Really-Rather-Be-Someplace-Else, but rather in that "Hey hon, how are ya today?" kind of way - very personable. The walls are lime-green but don't exactly intrude on your field of vision as an eye-sore. There doesn't seem to be a lot of seating, but there's enough space to bring out some more tables. I definitely want to come back here for some breakfast sometime, as some of the things I saw leaving the kitchen looked absolutely scrumptious. So although I really liked this place, at the end of it all I really did was have some hot chocolate. Next time I go, I just might adjust those stars.

The food here isn't great, but when it's 7am on a weekend (including Sunday), your choices are limited. Really limited. Like it's either here or the packed insanity of Mike's City Diner. Appleton has a much more relaxed environment, plenty of natural light, and above all else is very convenient. I really do feel sorry for their workers. Getting up for a 7am opening on Sunday must suuuuuck. Despite this, the people behind the counter are peppy and friendly.

I'm extremely happy about this place for one part of their business -- their prepared foods. I'd give Appleton's 3 stars for their service and their sandwiches. To me, the regular deli sandwiches are nothing special. But I eat lunch here regularly for their prepared foods. Their grilled vegetables, pasta salad or cous cous sides, and meat or fish dishes (flank steak, crab cakes, chicken cutlets) are alway phenomenal. Their marinated salmon is the BEST salmon I've ever had. The prepared foods are expensive, but totally worth it. It's not the most comfortable place to eat in. I'd definitely recommend the place for take out.

Appleton Bakery is a great South End hot spot ... Their sandwiches are outstanding !! So fresh and delicious !! I always order the black forest ham and swiss on rye with "everything" ... it's out of this world !! The only reason I put 3 stars is because a sandwiches are like $12 - a little high even for downtown and the baked goods yuck ! ... always stale and an incredible small selection .... should be called Appleton Sandwich shop !! enjoy ...

The restaurant was renovated in July 2011 when it was sold to new ownership. They kept a few of the old restaurant's sandwiches but not much else. I really enjoyed the old place. They were a great value in an expensive neighborhood. The staff was also partially let go. I understand all of the business reasons for this. It is now more like a Starbucks with places to sit. The interior is really well done. The specials and sandwiches from before were really what kept me going back, as well as the coffee and tea selection. While in my last few months in Boston, I did patronize this place. I think out of anticipation my olfactory senses were awaiting how it used to be. Oh well. Their desserts are just as on par as before. But it was definitely an undiscovered place; God forbid anyone who's not local cross Columbus Ave who works in Copley ;), or at least that's what it felt like before. You could escape there from the workaday crowd really well. Best of luck to the new ownership!

Morning glory muffins are the glory in my mornings when I decide to skip the lara bar and have something truly yummy... Hmm, so dee-licous!

I have only been to Appleton for coffee or a latte but both have been quite good. The staff was friendly, the prices are reasonable and there's plenty of seating (surprising for a South End cafe). I have to say, though, that I'd probably prefer some other neighborhood cafes (Flour, Blunch, etc) but will definitely give these guys a chance sometime for more than just caffeine.

The muffins here have a cake-like texture and taste, which may explain their deliciousness. The cupcakes are moist and not too sweet, but the inch and a half of icing is a bit much... Appleton's sandwiches are fresh and creative and made with very high quality ingredients. They are a bit pricey though, about 9 dollars each.

I have only had coffee and pastry from here, so I can't say about the sandwiches, or soups - though I get lost looking at the board and my mouth starts to water as I wait for my coffee... I'll just have to make sure to go here at lunchtime some day, satisfy my curiosity. It's a solid cup of coffee you can get here. They have apparently prize winning muffins, which I only noticed the notices for the other day, so I got myself a pear muffin and a cranberry orange one for my dad. The muffins were moist enough, a decent size and had a pretty good taste to them. I wouldn't say they were the best muffins I'd ever had though... The service is always friendly to me here, and it's sometimes easy to find parking, if you just happen to be driving by and want to stop in.

I really wanted to like this place, since my coworkers raved about it, and it's really cute. I can't speak for the bakery side, but the sandwich I got left a lot to be desired. For lunch with some coworkers, I ordered The Rome ("grilled portobello mushroom cap with sun-dried tomato pesto, caramelized onions, smoked gouda cheese and lettuce" -- sounds delicious, right?). It was a soggy, messy, drippy disaster. I ended up throwing away half of it because the sandwich kept falling apart. The taste was OK, but I went back to work still hungry and a little annoyed. Plus, it was way overpriced.

This has been my go to place for my afternoon coffee, as it's less than a city block from my new place of employment. The service is friendly, and the products are delicious. I've been swinging by when I want an afternoon iced tea or iced coffee (both are super!) and this morning I stopped in for a bagel. It was lovely, and i will be sampling sandwiches soon. The breakfast goods look amazing, and I had to restrain from buying a strawberry pear muffin today, and I don't even like muffins that much! Bonus points for them taking all credit cards. I love being able to use my amex where ever I go. The only thing holding me back from giving this place five stars is that they should work harder on the decor....some new tables and chairs (some of them look like they've seen their best days), fixing things up a little better, a new coat of paint. That and also the merchandise is kinda blah; there's giant gum tins with Christmas packaging still, which isn't really cool. I'd say lose the merch, get a bigger food display case, and put in more seating, but who am I? Clearly not their business consultant! I do like the idea of them selling milk, but they could have a larger cooler with ALL beverages and lose all the little ones scattered through out the cafe. Anyway, it's a great little cafe, and I will continue coming in.

Frequently, even though the order taker reads it back, the kitchen staff (who tend to be slow as well) get my orders wrong. The last time I tried to eat lunch there the chicken salad was rancid. I give it 2 stars instead of one because the people are pleasant and the bakery stuff is good. No more lunch attempts there for me!

This place is the notes junior! It's so delicious. First off, they have these wild cupcakes that make your mouth water. They also have delicious hot chocolate, a too ill iced coffee in the summer time, and a bunch of cookies that will whip your taste buds up into a fury. The breakfast there is jammin' as well. Give this place a whirl if you're not mental!

  • Melissa S.

The coffee here rivals that of many trendy New York joints; it's strong, hearty, and delicious, which came as a surprise after reading other reviews. The inside of the Cafe leaves much to be desired -- it's really lacking in terms of artwork....There doesn't seem to be one cohesive theme. But, if you're the type who can easily overlook a less than aesthetic setting, then go: the bagels and coffee and supernice baristas are well worth it.

I love Appleton! It's on a such a pretty and quiet street in the South End, right on my way to work. i love to stop in to grab a hot cider or coffee en route. The girls who work here are totally cute and friendly. Prices are fine for the area. I'll keep coming back!

Stopped in for some sugar as my friend and I were eating our way through the South End. The place seemed nice enough, good service, clean. We settled on some donuts. They were good, but we could tell they were better when they were made 7 hours ago... The baked goods were enticing enough to warrant another visit when I am next in the area. The muffins looked especially good. Def one of those places that makes me wish I lived in the South End - I could see many mornings spent here with coffee and a paper. It's my kind of place.

Appleton bakery is convenient to my work commute, kind of hidden and yet accessible if you know where you are going. Because I am a coffee addict and snob, I feel very conflicted entering buildings that serve any kind of coffee drinks (chains, local, fair trade, whatever). However, after ignoring the building, the outside seating, the smells and the sandwich board for Appleton bakery for 4 years, I decided to give it shot when I read on their board "Best coffee in town". Best of anything is tough to claim and very ballsy to do. I figured such a claim in public must have happened after some serious research, awarded and rewarded proof. Conveniently, it was close to lunch time so I figured I would get some lunch and be floored with the best coffee in town, so I gave in and I went in. It was surprising to see only 1 other client in the bakery at this time of day and I figured it would be convenient for me, I could just order the Best coffee drink, a sandwich and run back to office... WRONG! I spent literally 31 minutes waiting for my order, timed from the moment my change was given to me. This is not a lunch hour friendly place, which is very weird to find in the middle of the week in industrious Boston's South End. I understand it is made "from scratch" like the counter lady explained, and yet, even when baked, most sandwiches don't take more than 13 minutes to prepare. The sandwich however, was delicious, and the combination of delicious sandwich and waiting forever, would've been appropriate for Sunday brunch (in some circles). The coffee however was another story. I do have to say that I never the saw the sign read "Best coffee in town" again.

A nice neighborhood cafe/bakery. I can't speak for the sandwiches, but i'm IN LOVE with their cupcake!! It's not too sweet, perfectly moist (I know, I hate the word too, but it's perfect!), yummy frosting. Problem would probably be the limited choices in flavors, but I am willing to give up choice if the one on offer is perfect. Which it is.

Honestly, I know tons of people who rave about this place. It kind of sucks. Especially lately. The coffee always tastes stale... the muffins are always raided to hell unless you're there early in the AM (which, let's face it... none of us are). It never looks like it's STOCKED. I feel like I'm in a bread line most of the time since the service is slowwwwww. Also, my drink is an iced latte. I order it everywhere. Even if it's not on the menu people can always pull it off. On more than one occasion I've had servers here ask me how to make an iced latte. I'm happy to explain but it's a bit unnerving. You're a cafe, right? I WILL say that the sandwiches here are good, but I feel like the "bakery" part and the "cafe" part are pretty distinct entities in terms of quality of service. The guys behind the food counter know what's up. The bakery side of things... not so much. I think Francesca's is a safer bet and it's just up the road.

It's okay. The sandwiches are 3/5, i hear the desserts (cheesecake brownie specifically) are excellent. I like that they have the Deep River chips which are great kettle cooked chips. prices are a little high.

Disappointing. I came here on a Sunday afternoon, looking for a low-key sandwich place near downtown. I got the Melrose: veggies and cheese, and my boyfriend got the Spartan: mozzarella and prosciutto. You can choose what cheese goes on the Melrose, I asked for mozzarella and the girl responded they were out, which confused me since my boyfriend's sandwich WAS mozzarella. So over on the sandwich making side, when I saw another girl getting out the mozzarella, I asked if she could put that on my sandwich and she obliged. My sandwich was carelessly thrown together. The bread was soggy and the contents fell out as soon as you picked it up. My boyfriend's had about three times as much prosciutto as all the other ingredients combined, which was too much. The service wasn't bad, but slightly lackluster. The baked goods on display looked appealing, but I decided to not spend anymore money there. The sandwiches were definitely on the more expensive side, $8.50-$9, considering what you get.

Blueberry muffin is the best blueberry muffin I have ever had. They are SO good there. The few other things I've had there are good as well, but not as mind-blowingly good as the blueberry muffins :)

I've been staying in the neighborhood for a month and had a truly gross experience there. I watched them cook eggs for my egg sandwich, and then leave them on the bare counter--no plate, no towel, no pan, just egg on counter--for nearly three minutes before they put them in my sandwich. I don't even want to think about the microbes. I dropped my sandwich in the garbage can and left. My husband and son had similar experiences. I also bought coffee, paid for it, and then stood there coffee-less while the cashier fussed over a regular customer. I finally said "uh, could I get my coffee please?" She looked at me like "well, sure, if you're going to be a pain about it." Sorry, but I was in a hurry! It's a take-out restaurant! The menu is limited, the hours are bad, and frankly the service sucks.

One Thursday at lunch I let my nationality (American) get the best of me and apparently committed a terrible faux pas--I asked for onions and pickles on my meatloaf sandwich. The meatloaf sandwich is a Thursday special that you have to show up early for. It's world famous in the South End, so a friend and I decided to try it. We were corrected by someone who seemed to be the owner ("it comes with ketchup and cheese; that's how we make it"). Because I was curious to try the sandwich I didn't check him on his rudeness or point out that the customer is supposedly always right or that it's no reflection on his taste that I like onion on a sandwich, but as you can see the episode did rankle me. Anyhow, it was a delicious sandwich (it would have been better with some thinly sliced onion and pickles), but it's the only stand-out sandwich I've had there; and I have to agree with several other reviews that everything is expensive but not really worth the extra cost.

So I asked the person taking my order for a recommendation of a pastry. I'm not the biggest brownie fan but she recommended the brownie with cream cheese swirl and I took the bait. Now the piece of brownie was huge and before I even got my sandwich for lunch i tore into the brownie. Yea...it was amazing. The brownie wasn't too dense nor was it overtly too sweet and the tangy cream cheese was the perfect compliment to the chocolately brownie. The flank steak sandwich was good too but too be honest I didn't finish it because I knocked out the brownie before even taking a bite of the sandwich. I think i might have to try their oatmeal cookie....

decent coffee and the cakes/muffins aren't too sweet. the sandwiches look good but they're all just stuff i can make at home w/ store bought cheeses, prosciutto etc. but good to hang and it's a short walk.

If you are a regular who gets your coffee there every morning, expect good service. Don't bother going if not - cashier's are a little surly to newcomers. Their coffee is good and the baked goods special, just not worth the 'tude.

I'm a huge fan of supporting non-chain businesses, so I try to take advantage of the great places in the South End (and tend to stray from the Starbucks' and Dunkin' Donuts'). This was my first time here, and I probably won't go back. It was mildly busy (what coffee shop isn't in the morning?), yet somehow after I put in my order of one piece of pastry and a small iced coffee and paid, I stepped to the side...and was promptly forgotten. I'm not one to raise a stink. So, after patiently waiting for longer than I should have, I politely asked if perhaps I was waiting in the wrong spot. The girl who took my order then asked, "What were you waiting for again?". If you have all the time in the world in the morning, give this place a whirl. Otherwise, give another neighborhood eatery a shot.

I have been frequenting Appleton for about 2 months now. Mediocre at best. If you have more than 1 item in your order from the kitchen, be prepared for it to be wrong. Id say the only thing they have going for them is their cookies.

  • Heather G.

The muffins here are inventive. Sometimes a bit on the dry-side if you go a bit later in the day, but get there first-thing and you have optimal selection and pastry-moistness. The morning glory muffin is my favorite, but you can't go wrong with any selection. Bware, though, they are really dense, so one will fill you up for hours, but can sit in your stomach like a rock if you eat too quickly!

I confess, I'm a muffin-aholic. Appleton Bakery has the best muffins in the city. No contest. Go around 6 pm on weeknights to pick up 2 for 1 muffins. Go really early if you want their oh-so-delicious-it-sells-out-in-minutes morning glory muffins. The currant scones are also absolutely fabulous. I haven't had anything here other than the scones and muffins, but why would you bother?

I had some sort of funky rolled scone the other day - not bad. The seating is awkward - the left side of the store doesn't seem like a nice place to sit in. I am looking forward to their other goods, like cupcakes.

Eep. It breaks my heart a bit to see bad reviews of this place. True, the South End is chock full of sandwich/bakery/cafes. And the prices here are a leeeetle bit steep (though, only like a dollar more than Panera, people). But, seriously, to me, it is a Mecca of fresh, amazing tasting food. Today I grabbed a Macintosh, which is turkey, havarti cheese, apples, lettuce, and dijon mustard. Good lord, it was food heaven. And their baked goods are, I would contest, almost par with Flour. Almost. The cookies are incredible, and the muffins are creative and luscious. Mmmm muffins. If you're in the area and can plunk down 10 bucks for lunch, you definitely won't regret it.

Went here recently with a friend for birthday-girl lunch (hers) and was pleansantly surprised with the food & atmosphere! Appleton is a charming little cafe that offers some tasty sandwich offerings (roast beef and goat cheese, turkey brie and fresh apples), super soups (the corn chicken chowder was perfect on a cold, rainy day!) and delish desserts (like the yummy chocolate cupcake I scarfed down even though it wasn't my birthday!) I'd def come back again to try more of their offerings & sample more of their tasty baked goods.

The best coffee, delicious and creative muffins, and the BEST BEST BEST veggie cream cheese I have ever had. Bagels are so-so, but merely a vehicle for which to eat your veggie cream cheese. The service is ehh--so so. It's probably best if you want to go home and eat your muffins, too--because there are only a few tables. My boyfriend and I definitely go out of our way, though, to go to Appleton.

I really like it here. They have wonderful coffee and it's my go to place to pick up some cupcakes or other treat for someone in my office before I go to work. Additionally, they have great salads and sandwiches. They aren't the best deal in town, but I always know it'll be good. The cafe is so cute, too; a great place to catch up with a friend on a lazy weekend morning. I only wish they were open later!

This place is so cool! The food is great and they have a sandwich (dont remember the name) with roasted red peppers on it which is out of this world! The place could stand to be a little cleaner...it has a bit of a dingy feel to it, BUT that should not stop you. The staff is friendly and the coffee is good.

Appleton's is right around the corner from my work, so it's a great place to stop on the way there, or for a quick cup of coffee for my mid-day energy slump. They're coffee is yummmmy (fair trade I think, too) and I can't resist the croissants they make.....really, the most perfect croissant I've ever eaten. Nice cozy space, and there are always interesting people there. It's a real neighborhood cafe. I give Appleton's two stars for two reasons. First, they really are pretty expensive. I don't mind doing my $4 coffee/croissant morning meal, it's definitely worth it. But as much as I would like to try some of their sandwiches, I can't bring myself to forking over $8-10 for lunch (more if you want something added to the sandwich!). One of these days I will give sandwiches here a try, they look delicious. The price isn't a huge deal, but that brings me to point #2.... The other negative is the service. Almost everyone that's helped me there has been fine, polite, sometimes even chipper. There's one guy, though, in his late 30's with a ponytail who is so hit or miss, it keeps me from coming to Appleton's on a more regular basis (I think he's the owner or a manager of some sort...he's always there). Every time I've come in and asked for a coffee to be filled in my travel mug (trying to save the world, here!) he's rolled his eyes and finished ringing me through without a word. Twice I stopped by pre-work after finishing my mug of coffee from home, and he audibly sighed when he realized there had previously been liquid in it, then rinsed it with about as much not-so-subtle attitude as I could handle in the morning. Just today I came in and got my usual coffee and croissant, though I left my mug in my bag so I wasn't scorned for being a paper-saver. Things were fine with him. I almost got a smile. I went over to the milk and sugar station and, reaching for a lid for my paper cup, knocked my entire coffee over. I immediately started cleaning up and moved their napkins and straws so they didn't get soaked. I waited for him to finish with his customer to ask him if he had any towels I could use to clean up my mess and he said, without an ounce of empathy "Don't worry about it." I continued cleaning and he snapped at me not to touch it, then he snapped at one of the back-of-house guys that works there to help, muttering under his breath "it's his freaking JOB to clean this." Did I mention before that the people who come here are great? Because right after this happened, and I was nervous and embarrassed for having made a huge mess, some woman who I've never seen before was like "Oh honey, don't worry about it! Don't let this get you down!" Then before I left she asked me to come here and gave me a big hug and said "I hope your day gets better." So random and so nice. It should be noted that it takes a lot more work to be an asshole than it does to be a decent person. Needless to say, it might be a little while before I go back. I just hope to God when I do go in next time I get the cute guy with the strawberry blond beard.

You can walk right by it and not even see it. This is a good place for a fresh muffin or scone and hot coffee. The place is a little bigger inside than you'd think, so you can actually sit and read the paper in the morning or go outside and make passers-by salivate over your food.

there's one thing that sucks about the south end. p-a-r-k-i-n-g. brutal. residents only. make me feel more unwanted. but one thing that doesn't suck is the "day after thanksgiving" sandwich. let me break this gastric prince down for you. real turkey breast slices.. of the kind with strings of meat jettisoning everywhere with a thickness and girth you could build stuff with. i mean the things looked like damn house shingles. real cranberry sauce - thats thick and gluey and a bright red that could pass as fake blood on any given friday the 13th. stuffin was a little pasty.....clearly not the coarse smorgasboard filled variety but tasty nonetheless. i'm not really sure what else was in it nor does it really matter as they're not relevant. given the bread options i should have picked the baguette but chose the multigrain instead. rookie move no doubt. i know the multigrain is likely better for you but to be honest who really cares. the baquette is far superior since its (1) bigger (2) has a crunch to offset the cranberry and stuffing mooshathon. i know this because i went with another indulger who did have the foresight to get the baguette - which i silently envied for the duration of lunch. i shamefully wished he couldn't finish it so i could eat the rest but luckily for the sake of my own dignitiy that never materialized. when you chase after the "day after" you're effectively giving up a small nugget of health for a big bomb of satifaction. no brainer. win-win. however you slice or dice it.. big homerun. score. fist pump. strangely enough everything was really hazy to recall. i'm very sure this can be attributed to the ensuing food coma caused by the gorge of tryptophan. oh get a load of this... this sandwich prize is only available every other thursday. at first i balked blasphemy but then during the ensuing coma i figured out that it was conceptually flawed. given the name "day after thanksgiving" it should be on a friday. jess sayn.technically speaking. which by the way was a proud moment of brain cell function given the vegetative homer i was. but i do appreciate the two week waitiing period for a few reasons. i probably should not eat this every week anyway. that would require me to exercise that 1 extra day and homey dont play that. its bad enough i run 10k on the treadmill a couple times a week. big bear on the ramp machine is not a pretty sight. nor is it quiet. you can hear me running and pounding that poor piece of machinery. secondly it gives me something to look forward to. there's enough time involved to wane between wanting and getting. temporaly that's a good calibration i think.one last thing...... i remember looking at the chalkboard menu which had lots of other options - mostly puns on different apple varieties like the "cortland", "granny smith", "macintosh". i guess that works given the location on appleton street. if they were really smart they would have created a salad called "applebottom greens". woot woot.

Applebee is an American full-service restaurant brand popularly known for its signature Riblets. Applebee was conceptualized in 1980 by Bill and TJ Palmer in Atlanta, Georgia. At first, the restaurant was named T.J. Applebee's RX for Edibles and Elixirs. After the concept was acquired by W.R. Grace and Company, the restaurant was renamed as Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar. Later the company and the Applebee's concept changed hands with Abe Gustin and John Hamra who started the first Applebee's franchise restaurant in Kansas City.

Later in 2007, IHOP Corp. now known as DineEquity, Inc. acquired Applebee's and began their journey together to make Applebee's the world's largest full-service restaurant chain. Today, Applebee's serves at more than 1,830 locations worldwide. The Applebee's menu ranges from Appetizers and Salads to heavy meals consisting of ribs and steak.
