I thought this place is great. The foods are good, the price is cheap and the location is right in the heart of downtown Boston. I love their breakfast special with 3 eggs, 2 pancakes, toast breads, beacon or sausage (your choice). Which cost about $8.00. Where can you get that kinda deal in downtown for food? The menu have various choices of sandwiches, pizzas, salads to choose from. The staffs here are very nice and friendly and they give you so much foods at a low price that you don't get anywhere in downtown. The only downfall is the interior of the restaurant is very ghetto looking and a bit run down. They also have no AC, so in a hot summer day, the restaurant could be like a sauna inside.

Uh, my fiancée has found hair in her sub...long hair, twice. I haven't, but I do recall that they don't wear hair nets. It's hot in there, they sweat (and wipe their sweat) a lot, and the big guy chef is pretty hairy...so yeah, twice. Not to mention their bread sits out in the open, perfect for fly landings and dung. Go to Al's, not Capone. There are two around here, please find one. Only come here if you're the "bang for your buck" type of person and don't care who, where, and how someone prepares your food. For the prices of the subs and breakfast sandwiches it's O.K. considering everything else i.e. ambiance and cleanliness, no. Also, if you order here. DO NOT stand in here and wait for your order, and do not eat in here. You will smell like peppers, onions, cheese, and grease for the the rest of the day. You have been warned.

Great chow and service! If you're hungry and ambience is not a priority, this is the place.

Let me get the cons out first: this is not the place where you want to go for your dates. The interior decor is nearly nonexistent, and the lack of air conditioning makes this literally a hot place to eat. That being said, you should not be deterred from coming to Al Capone's. Traveling from Houston, we wanted something good and cheap to eat and this place delivered. My "slice" of BBQ chicken pizza was as nearly half of Domino's medium pizza, and it was one of the best and most fulfilling BBQ chicken pizza I had. My sister ordered the garlic and pepper chicken junior sub, which came in a half-foot long sub overfilled with delicious chicken meat that was made right at the spot. We were completely full and the bill for three was only $15! I was so satisfied by this experience that I promised the cool, friendly owner that I would return again. (Sadly, I realized that I won't be able to return any time soon because I was heading back to Houston) The bottom line is that if you want a good, cheap Italian pizza and subs without regarding the decor, go to Al Capone's! --- tl;dr version: 1. Not a well-decorated place to dine 2. Large portions of delicious pizza and subs at a very cheap price 3. Owner dude was super cool. Talk to him!

Sandwiches here are pretty standard/basic, I got the chicken Caesar salad in a roll. It was loaded with chicken which is good, but it lacked flavored. I had only two croutons in my sub, which was kinda sad and it didn't remind me of a chicken Caesar salad at all..it was like an okay cold chicken sub

The "junior" is a huge sandwich made with fresh bread. Service was pretty speedy though not very friendly. I was probably in and out in 10 minutes. I suspect this was because i went just after the big lunch rush. The lunch combo includes a junior sized sandwich, small bag of chips, can of soda, and a cookie all for under 9 bucks... which is pretty good in my book. I do agree with Phil O who mentioned the fact that you'll wreak of grease after going in here.. i must say even though i got a cold ham and cheese sub i left smelling like a steak and cheese... I guess there are worse things to smell like?

Ate one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had here! Huge, made to order and the sausage is amazing!

Beyond yummy! My husband and son are still talking about their Al Capone's lunch! We had the Italian Cold Cut sub w/ hots, OMG even though I loved mine (Philly Cheese Steak) I would get that in a heartbeat! My little ones loved their pizza and it has that mom and pop feel that only Boston can provide.

I stumbled upon Al Capone's while exploring the area with my daughters. We decided to get a meat lovers pizza for dinner and it was delicious. I walked in and Rosa took my order right away and got our pizza started. We waited about 15 minutes for us to get our grub on and boy did we get our grub on. We had planned to make it back the next day to try the sandwiches, but we got so busy we never made it back. I was sad that they did not have wings but I survived either way. Rosa gave us some free cookies which my daughter loved. Prices are low for delicious food! I hope to come back for some sandwiches next time I visit Boston.

This place has been on my list to try since I started working in the financial district, but I got a little carried away with the myriad of other choices. I am way in to delis and picky about where I go, but I figured it was just another deli...it can wait until I've tried the more interesting places... Boy was I wrong. The bread! The breaaadddd. So good. I got the honey ginger chicken sub on wheat and it was very tasty. They have a pretty wide variety of stuff available as well. I was also pretty surprised at how low the price was, given the area. Definitely the cheapest lunch I've had around here in a while. Definitely recommended, you'll probably see me in there regularly for the next few months until I find my next new place!

  • Phil O.

Pros: This place gives you one of the best bangs for your buck in the area. Quick service, huge subs, and decent pizza. Cons: If you stay inside for longer than 10 minutes, or God forbid you dine upstairs, you'll wreak of pure grease. Hopefully you don't have to go back to work like the majority of customers.

  • Joesph B.

Food was good and the prices too, but they need a new hood exhaust, the smoke and food fumes filled the entire place and made my eyes burn and kinda made me sick, making it very uncomfortable to eat inside, and I smelled like food all day, also my bottled diet coke was warm :(

  • Blaire O.

I have been here a few times and am not sure exactly sure why I keep coming back. The first I came was with my Dad and we ate pizza upstairs. BIG mistake since my fleece and I smelled like pizza for rest of the day. I think $4 is expensive for a slice of pizza especially if it is mediocre. I had a chicken Parmesan and steak works subs before. They were super greasy and lacking flavor. I'll give them a star on their sub sizes for a decent price. I ordered a medium steak works sub for $10.17 and I had it for 2 meals. I don't think I will come back here as there are so many sub and pizza places near work.

Not to be confused with Al's State Street Cafe, this sandwich shop also serves subs, but is vastly different. I always get the junior size (the very smallest) and even this is enough to last for two meals. The bread is good and it's not rushed like the other Al's is. I've never had their hot subs (I've heard the other Al's is better), but they make their cold subs in a Subway-style line: you pick your choice of bread, toppings, etc. They seem more authentic somehow, but I think I still prefer the other Al's. This one does come with a variety of other foods, like pizza and pasta, if that's more your style.

  • Daniel A.

If you go upstairs to eat, you'll leave smelling like oil and grease all day. Their breakfast tastes pretty decent and I'm satisfied with the price of breakfast but not so pleased with their customer service skills. I have never seen the woman behind the grill smile, not even once. One time she made an entire sandwich for the customer who came in behind me, and gave it to him BEFORE she finished my order. I don't know if she has some sort of prejudice but at the end of the day, their overall niceness and respect for people could use some growth. Subs are pretty decent too.

  • Bobby C.

$10 for a 20" is a pretty good deal especially if you are splitting it with a co-worker. Ordering during lunch time tends to be somewhat chaotic. Expect to smell like a kitchen when you walk out.

    (3)
  • Caillin C.

Fresh baked bread, fresh ingredients and a 20" sub for $11.50 I think we have a winner! Tasty as heck but maybe a little extra in the service side of things to get that 5th star.

I stumbled upon Al Capone's while walking around downtown and being caught off guard by a pang of hunger. The place is not visually appealing, it looks kind of divey and hall of the wall. Definitely no thrills and far as welcoming designs or interior looks but when you're hungry how the place looks is the last thing on your mind. Al Capone's offers a lunch deal of a junior sub, bag of chips, cookie and soda for about 7 dollars with tax and when hunger that sounded like the perfect deal. The subs here are humongous, their junior sub is a probably 10 inches long and bigger than any other small sub that you would get at any other sub shop. And unlike some places bigger size doesn't mean lower quality of food. I had the chicken cutlet Parmesan sandwich. Two nice sized pieces of chicken, lighted breaded and seasoned well that they dip in rich flavorful marinara sauce. The sub was delicious unfortunately it was too big and I couldn't finish the entire thing. Ended up having to throw some of it away and I hate to waste food. Cookie they give you was also pretty tasty, couldn't tell if it was fresh made or packaged. Nice little spot in downtown Boston, probably great spot or the occasional lunch, couldn't eat there everyday with the size of their subs but definitely worth a visit because they give you quality food and a lot of it and a cheap price.

  • Lauren L.

Listen, I'm sorry, but for the quality of the experience and the price I pay? I can do better. In DTC, there are places that charge too much, and then there are places that don't care that they charge too much. This is one of the latter, unfortunately, because there's a Subway coming in next door that's going to steal all their business when people realize you can get a better sandwich for half the price. I usually go all-out in my reviews, but Al Capone's isn't worth it. The only steal happening here is the employees taking from the clientele, and I will never go there again.

I just had the best steak and cheese sub from this place! However, I must warn you it was not your traditional steak and cheese. I got the steak and cheese sub with their creamy jalapeño sauce and it was out of this world. The sauce had a creamy flavor but not to the point where it overwhelms all the other flavors but just enough to bring all the ingredients together. The jalapeño in the sauce made it little spicy which I loved! I personally love spicy and so I asked for extra jalapeños on my sub and it was the perfect balance to the creamy sauce! I would definitely recommend this sub! I have not tried their other subs or pasta yet but I will definitely be going back!

Al Capone's is the underdog you really want to root for, but ultimately they just generally lack the effort to become the them you wish they could be. It's like the new Star Wars movies. You wish that they could live up to what you know and love, but ultimately they just Jar Jar Binks all over everything. It must be hard being Al Capone's, though: making "semi-OK" sandwiches in the shadow of the far superior Al's a couple of blocks away, not quite getting why they get 25x the business. While no one wishes this could be a David beats Goliath-that-coincidentally-is-also-named-David story more than me, after every "Why don't I give Al Capone's another chance?" meal, I feel like I would've done better had I gone to literally any other sandwich shop. Clean yourself up, Al Capone's. I just can't enable you any more. In the meantime, you would do well to change your name so people don't have to differentiate between the "Good Al's" and the "Strange-looking Mediocre Al's."

Not-very-fresh contents inside a stale sub roll delivered with surly service at a higher-than-expected price. Pass this one up.

    (1)
  • Robert P.

I eat at this place at least 3 days a week.... you cannot beat the Jr Sub Special - you get an 8" sub, chips, drink, and a cookie all for under $8. I love this place because it is right in the heart of downtown, and there are tons of different option to choose from. Pros: Great food, very fast, and economical. Cons: You smell for the rest of the day after only being in there for 5 min - also, don't get the honey mustard on anything - it is too wet and it makes your sandwich messy and soggy.

    (4)
  • Matt W.

Al Capone's is aptly named, because I feel like I just got robbed. Stuck up for seven bucks, I received a half a pound of crumbling, overcooked maybe-beef on a Costco bun, fries that have been under a lamp since prohibition, and a can of Fresca - a soda I was unaware was still being made. Worst.

In my experience, ordering a medium sub has always been the "just right" option. Whether it be at Subway, D'Angelos, or any other fast-food sandwich chain - medium has always suited me just fine. I walked into Al's and without stopping to check anything out - I ordered a "medium" sub. The guy turns around, cuts the bread and whips back around and starts spreading mayo on the LARGEST medium I have ever seen. That's when I finally paused and looked at the very obviously placed "example sizes" in the display in front of me. Holy crap. A 10" medium sub? No way will I finish it. But too late now, the sandwich is in production! I ordered a ham and provolone with lettuce, tomato, olives and pickles (it's my 'thang') and when I got back to work to begin the onerous task of eating such a large sandwich...I admit. It was daunting. I will also admit that I only made it half way through the sandwich. It was a fair sandwich (nothing to write home about). I wasn't in love with the ham they have (definitely the kind that is soaked in water - blech) but other than that - the ingredients tasted fresh, the bread wasn't stale - yeah, it was edible. I don't think it will become a frequent member of my lunch rotation, but you definitely get a bang for your buck at Al's. 10 inches! Seriously!?

  • Rachel M.

$8 will get you: a half a sub (which is HUGE), chips, a drink and a cookie. What a steal, for Boston!

  • Tanya Y.

Yes, this place may not have the most welcoming store front, nor does this place have the most appealing seating area. Ha, and this place is probably far off the charts from being remotely healthy, however, if you're broke and hungry, Al Capone is like a pot of gold at the end of a long rainbow - it's one of Downtown Boston's hidden gems. The one and only thing that I have tried here are their hot sub sandwiches. It was their 20" subs for ~$9.00 that initially lured me in. After noting that they cook the subs to order with fresh ingredients (grilled chicken, steak, etc) in many awesome flavors [ chipotle chicken, garlic parmasean, etc], I was hooked. They even have "junior" subs and combo deals; you're able to get a sub, side salad, cookie, and a drink for as little as $6.00. They offer up free samples occasionally and is only a short walk away from Downtown Crossing MBTA station. Al's is definitely a hot spot for my friends and I and I know I'll be back for more.

Subs are good, nothing else here I would likely open up and give a shot. I mean, for the price and the sheer amount of sandwich you get, Capone's really isn't that bad of a deal. They have some decent sandwich options, but nothing to really write home about. I enjoy to come here every once and a while. I mean, I wouldn't have them cater my wedding or anything, but for 7-8 bucks for lunch, its not a totally awful option. There are better sandwiches in the general vicinity, but I always like to come here for a huge Italian sub or some Steak and Cheese greasy goodness. Again, this place is good every once and a while, not an everyday spot. I especially like it when they have the little woman handing out free samples in the front. Hint: Don't order their large, unless you are Joey Chestnut and can consume 2 feet of sandwich for lunch. If you do order a large, make sure you save the other half for dinner, best option, so don't order something that will die sitting in your office fridge for the rest of the day.

  • Apolinaras S.

I can see Capone's from my conference room window, so I just had to go check out the place. I was bit disappointed. Al's South Street Cafe 2 blocks away is much better deal and makes much better sandwiches. It just feels that this place is disorganized and they stuff your sandwich with much less meat than Al's on South. MUCH less. I guess that is my beef with this place. Where is the beef? Though this place is convenient and decent, I just going to continue walking couple of blocks to Al's South Street

    (3)
  • Mike O.

It's been over a year since my pledge to stop patronizing Capone's if things did not shape up, and one thing's for certain: they just don't care about quality as it has sunk into an abyss of atrocity. The food is trash, and that's why it's priced accordingly. The fact that they hand out free samples outside speaks to the fact that they can't get people in the door otherwise. Further, that they're serving "street meat" unheated and often uncovered is deplorable. I mean, are they trying to get people sick?!?!?! This sentiment was solidified when on my last time ordering their food I saw a mouse cross the dining room floor. I am being 100% truthful and when I saw that I almost lost it. I immediately canceled my order and left, never to return again, and not for nothing, but their reputation needs to be put on notice for exposing customers to the risks associated with how a bad business owners decide to operate a quick service restaurant in this manner. I am not oblivious to the fact that there is an inherent rodent dilemma in urban dwellings, but fix it! Shame on you Capone's. You and your ragtag crew need to be put out of business!

I went to this sandwich and pizza place on a whim to grab a quick lunch, and I'm glad I did. I decided to get a Pulled Pork Sandwich with cheese and cole slaw on an onion roll. It was a really greasy sandwich, and it was huge! I would say, using really rough estimates that the diameter of the roll was about 15 cm, and the sandwich itself was approximately 6 cm thick. The pulled pork was chewy and tasty, and the cheese and cole slaw surprisingly went well with the pulled pork. The roll itself was soft, also really chewy and really tasty. I paid only $5 for it, and after eating the whole sandwich, my stomach was really full. I came here a second time, and decided to get a small Chipotle Chicken Sub with cheese. The sub was actually really huge for a small sub, as in approximately 36 cm long! This sub consists of grilled chicken, lettuce, tomato, chipotle sauce, mayonnaise and I think some sort of thin cucumber slices The chicken was a little dry, but the chipotle sauce, and the other condiments tasted really good with the chicken. The bread was soft and chewy,. After only eating half of the sandwich, my stomach was really full, so that sandwich in the small size can be big enough to feed you for two meals. I paid a total of $7.76 for that sandwich. A great bonus is that they give you a free cookie for every sandwich you order. This cookie is approximately 11 cm in diameter, making it a little big for a cookie. I believe I got my money's worth in terms of ordering hot sandwiches at this place, and would definitely consider coming back for them again, especially for their Pulled Pork sandwiches. I hope they continue with the tradition of giving me a free cookie every time I order a sandwich from this place.

Cheap / HUGE subs. I think the smallest one they have is like 10 inches for 6 bucks, up to like a 20 incher. Quality is pretty good (better than the other al capones in my opinion) overall but not anything too crazy good. Its nice thats its not super packed during lunch and you can get in and out really quickly. Yet overall the place really doesnt wow on any level and I find myself going to other lunch spots that are either better tasting or healthier ....Maybe im just addicted to viga?

I went to Al Capone's today to get a sandwich for lunch. I immediately noticed after placing my order that they had a large quantity of salad bread lying on this dirty table. Some covered some not. And due to the large number sitting there, I knew this is what they are giving to customers. It was gross to see it just sitting out on a dirty table. Then I happen to notice a roach crawling up the wall as I'm waiting for my food. I could be wrong but I think we all pretty much know what those look like... Once I received my food, I approached the manager - (daughter of the owner). She shrugged off my concerns and all she cared about was that I was in there talking on my phone . I had to ask this woman was she serious and are customers not allowed to talk on their phones in there?! Then the owner comes over and he seemed to agree with me in being concerned, however, he quickly got defensive with me once I mentioned the roach I seen. Needless to say, the owner snatched my sandwich out of my hand and I was basically told I can leave 'since clearly your not happy' (his words). Of course, I will NEVER go back there again and him snatching the sandwich not only saved me from consuming food that is likely contaminated.. but they didn't deserve to get a dime of my money. Save yourself the trouble and don't bother with this place. If you want a good sandwich, from a CLEAN establishment, and GREAT customer service.... Go to Al's on State Street. And in case your wondering, yes I filed a complaint with the Inspectional Health Dept.

I only ever get subs here, but they are always delicious. One thing to note: whenever I wait for a hot sub by the grill (hard to avoid if it's crowded) I come back to work smelling like a sandwich. My male coworkers love my eau de cheesesteak, but if anything about that situation would bother you, be conscious of where you stand.

Fat G. checking out a sandwich shop in the Downtown area. I was introduced to Al Capone's V after hanging out with my friend. His friend gave us a sandwich that he wasn't going to eat, and it tasted pretty good. It was also pretty filling. That being said, I had to try this place myself before making any judgments. I went there during the lunch hour, and they were handing out free samples. It looked like a turkey club cut up. You go inside and the register is on the right, towards the front. There are some tables on the left side, and it extends to the back. Along the right side is the sub making area, the menu, and the grill towards the back for hot foods. I didn't remember what exactly the sandwich was, so the staff helped me find out. It ended up being a BBQ pork sub with the fixings. They have other food there too, such as pizza and cookies. They have 3 sizes for their sandwiches: the small, medium, and 20 inch, which costs around $11. Service was pretty quick - they cooked my food in front of me on this grill. I took the sub back home and again, it was pretty filling and tasted good. The BBQ sauce was dripping, and I could see the chunks of meat. Though afterwards, I got sick. I don't know what to make of that. Recommended for: big subs.

AMAZING PRICES! Check the menu's for coupons. Get a huge sub and make it into 3 meals. I liked the steak bomb.

Came to get a Caesar salad and they gave me a tossed salad, when I told them that Caesar salad comes with romaine lettuce they start telling me that's not. Lady that was working on Christmas Eve was very rude and was complaining that we came in 30 min before closing time. I wouldn't recommend to anybody!!!!!!!!

When it comes to splurging on my lunch break- I love when it's splurging on flavor (aka calories) as opposed to money. Al Capone's makes that task easy- with a $6 deal for a junior sandwich (which is still a foot-long), chips and a soda. Throw in the fact the the sandwich I selected was a Philly cheese-steak- and I was definitely a happy camper. I even got a cookie thrown into my plastic bag. I did learn the hard way not to actually stay there to eat. When I left- I smelled like chain smoker who loves to grill. Not the best way to return to work- but my taste buds and stomach were both so happy, I couldn't dwell on the fact that my new stench was radiating throughout the office. Can't wait to try another sandwich!!

Fast, great value, pretty good subs, alot of choices....Breakfast is so - so....not many places to go for a quick over easy, bacon & toast. BUT, YOU WILL STINK WHEN YOU LEAVE, ALMOST LIKE YOU WORKED THE FRYOLATER ALL DAY IN THE BACK! Get more exhuast in that place....when was the last time you went out to eat, and left smelling like you cooked the food ..

This place is great for the "more bang for your buck" type of crowd. You won't leave the place hungry and their lunch special was the reason why I came back. After I visited Al's I had to take a star off from my last review.

    (2)
  • Ella F.

Only come here if you're hungry! I've made the mistake of ordering a small sub, and there's no way to finish it. They have a junior lunch special, where for $6 you still get a foot long sub, soda, chips, and a cookie. The subs are pretty good, and they don't charge extra for mushrooms, peppers, or onions on a steak & cheese. Beware, when you leave, you will smell like the place.

If you're starving, head here for lunch. We've ordered pizza for work from here a few times and it was solid, and I've walked in for a sandwich as well. Both options were good, and the service was friendly both for delivery and in person. I ordered an Italian sub in the shop, and the bread was soft yet crusty, and the toppings were all fresh. I loved the hot peppers and the liberal use of meat. The ambiance is slightly lacking, and the shop was smoky from the grill. For a $6 not so small sub special (includes chips and can of soda), I can totally overlook that.

  • Anieta C.

I love this place. I've only been here once, but I can remember how great their Philly steak and cheese tasted and it was inexpensive. This is the only place where I will eat a Philly steak and cheese sandwich. Just writing about it makes my mouth water. Other places automatically add onions and other veggies to the Philly steak and cheese sandwich, but not this place. One day I will be back and I know it will never change :)

  • Rona H.

Had the veggie lover breakfast wrap with eggs, cheese, peppers, onions, and mushrooms. They're very very generous with their ingredients! I thought they were a little heavy on the eggs; it kind of overpowered everything else! If you were going to pick this off the menu for the health aspect, I'd watch out for the high cholesterol part...but still hearty, filling, and a great value!

  • Jeremy K.

Probably the best value you can get in Downtown Boston. Honestly the subs were gigantic! Even the smaller size ones. Unfortunately, despite the fact that the service was friendly, I felt that they were trying to compensate for their lack of taste and good food with big portions and one bite into my steak and cheese sub kind of confirmed it. They slice their meats fresh and all, and that's fine but there was nothing special about the sub I had there. It was big, it was good but nothing great. I definitely didn't feel what many others supposedly have in the previous reviews. The do have seating but some of the tables were really dirty and the trash was full which was also a negative thing for me. I am willing to give them another shot for something else but not another greasy steak and cheese that they are supposedly famous for. The decor is a bit depressing but I sat near a window and that enabled me to people watch which was a positive. Only thing is that after all the hype, I was really expecting a bit more than what I experienced...

If you looking for a great value Al's definitely is the place to go. They give you a whole lot of food for a very low price. They have the 20 inch sub for less than 10 bucks, but if you craving something smaller you can always get the jr lunch special. My favorite here is the meatball sub. The meatball just melts in your mouth. However, one of the downside of coming here is when you walk into this place you will smell like it for the rest of the day. Even if you go in and out just to grab a quick slice. So if you don't have a problem with that and you are hungry this is the place to go.

Great place for a fast lunch. Not a place I would expect to see downtown Boston between the retail & financial district on summer street near downtown crossing. Anyway their subs are over loaded with meat. They also have pizza. Don't be fooled by the seating. When you walk in you only see about 8 tables. Walk toward the back and look up. more seating available. It's a very old building. Nothing fancy. Don't go during the summer if you can't take extreme heat because you will definitely pass out.

Capone's offers an array of menu options and very low prices while still delivering a tasty product. I always get the junior lunch special here which is a 10-inch sub (this includes any sub on the menu), a can of soda or bottle of water, a bag of chips and a cookie for $6.50. Since the sub is pretty good, I find it to be one of my favorite lunchtime offers. You get you main meal (sub) a side (chips) a drink, and dessert (cookie) all for under $7. You could do much worse.

good food at good prices. A good alternative to Subway or quiznos. They make a really good steak and cheese sub. Good deals here. The best deal is the six inch sub with can of soda and chips for 6 and change. They also have very large subs with huge portions too.

I dont get it. so you can pay 8.00 for a 16 inch sub that someone couldn't pay me to eat? This place is gross, and people just buy into it because they shove enough food in front of your face to make you think it's such an amazingly priced gem blah blah. So i get to Al Capones because it's around the corner from my dorm. I walk in, and it stinks and needs to be swept, BADLY. i'm not usually a picky person as far as that goes, but gross, pick up a broom. I order a cajun chipotle sub. Thanks for giving me terikaye of some sort. So i go upstairs to eat it. I make the mistake of grabbing the handrail of the stairs. ECHHHH yuckkk. slimy. Furthermore, can we get a window or a fan up here, its stiky and gross. All in all, i'd come here if i was on an INTENSE budget and needed all the crap calories i could get for 8.00.

The title should be written like this: AALLLLL CAAAPOOOOONNNE'S Becasue the philosophy here is definitely quantity over quality. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not gourmet cuisine. We're talking greasy, grimy, thoroughly American sandwiches and pizzas. Which is sometimes just what you're in the mood for. Just make sure to pack your gastrointestinal remedy of your choice. A 20 inch sub for under $10? Yes, please. And I just made up their new slogan: Al Capone's. Because sometimes you really are just THAT hungry.

5 Stars for the Antipasto Salad!! Go in and on your way by the fridge pull out one of the large salads of mixed greens. I have only gotten the antipasto but I am sure other salads are the same in that you can get any ingredient they have back there and the price will be the same * $7.76* This salad is huge and I end up eating it for lunch and dinner. Next time you're in the area walk right past that Sebastians salad bar line and head right into Al Capones. The people are friendly (minus the checkout girl, she has a seriously bad attitude), the service is fast and, did i mention the salad is awesome!?

One of the few places in Boston that is exactly what it tries to be. I'm giving it 4 stars for that reason; an unpretentious fast food/non-chain place to grab pizza/sub in downtown. Pretty good food, prepared fast, served in huge quantities (I don't even want to know who would order the 20" sub) for a reasonable price. The 'regular' sub is at least 12" and stuffed full. ($7.25) The 'slices' of pizza, are absolutely huge. I ordered two, and was full after the first one. Each one is literally a third of a pizza. I just got a giant Calzone... It was good, I think I'll stick to the pizzas and subs, as they are a slightly better deal. Though I am now in a bit of a food coma, and wishing I'd saved half for dinner ($7.00 with can of soda) Not a great place for the vegans or health nuts, or the weak of heart (and I don't mean that figuratively... the portions and the sheer volume of cheese will kill you). Otherwise, go check it out.

Awesome for breakfast and lunch. However I wish they served other meat options not just pork. The french toast is the best downtown and the omelets are HUGE! You definitely get your money's worth here. I've never tried anything besides the Steak and Cheese sub for lunch, but it was very well prepared. Huge portion sizes here. fyi Don't wear your favorite sweater, you'll smell like fried food ALL DAY. :-/

This place has friggin' awesome food. The pizza slices are enormous! Good prices too. I would definitely come here once a week at least if I was downtown more often. As an added bonus, they gave out free samples of some supremely delicious pork sandwich (haul). +1 star for free samples...always.

Best cheese steak in Boston, and best lunch deal in Downtown crossing. Order the junior combo, and you get a 6 inch sub, bag of chips, canned soda or water, and a cookie, all for less than $7. My only suggestion is that the interior could be cleaned up a bit, and it gets very smokey inside if you sit up top. During the warmer months, we try to take food to go and eat somewhere else.

The pizza is good. Tastes like a pizza should taste. Nothing amazing or mouth-watering, but if it's a pizza you want, it's a pizza you'll get. The place is kinda crappy for seating on the lower level, so you'd probably be better with take-out. The tables are kind of crumby and wobbly. I'll have to try to subs, I hear good things. Edit 8/7/2007: Okay. I had a small Philly today. A SMALL!!! I don't think it was small. Well it was, but it wasn't. It was longer than 12 inches!!! I ate it all. It was good. There has yet to be a steak n cheese that tops my list and conquers D'Angelo's chain subs, but this was a pretty good steak n cheese sub. Kinda peppery-tasting. Black pepper, not green.

I guess it's kind of strange to name a restaurant after a murderer / thief / gangster / baseball-bat head-smasher like Mr. Capone. I guess it's kind of like opening up a Jewish restaurant and calling it Bugsy Siegel's. Hey, we shot, robbed, bribed, threatened and beat innocent people, but shit, LOOK AT THIS FOOD! But, hell, who am I to speak, especially when the food is so cheap. You can get a sub the size of a Sidewinder missile for $9 or so, or one the size of an MP-5 for $7 -- perfect for the economic-downturn crowd. Big frisbees of pizzas for $5. A massive, greasy breakfast for $6, stomachache and all included. It ain't haute cuisine, but it's big and tasty and perfectly well and good and CHEAP. If you're looking for ambiance...well, the place is really "untouchable." Ahahaha. See what I did there? Not in a good way, neither. It's blistering hot upstairs, as the ovens blow the warm air straight skyward; the trash piles up in the bins; the tables are set so low that you look like a newborn foal getting up from them. So, the setting definitely knocks it down a star or two. Just a few aesthetic changes...and it would be the place in Downtown Crossing to go. As it is, it's just a reliable, serviceable, cheap spot for a downtown lunch. One can do a lot worse. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to go get the financing secured for my newest venture, Whitey Bulger's Authentic Irish Pub and Restaurant. Toodle-oo.

In a time when everyone is feeling the economic pinch, it's hard to find a better value for your money than Al Capone's. Their subs are excellent - the Italian uses all the right cold cuts (no bologna or generic ham here!), fresh bread and just the right amount of oil and vinegar to round out the mix. As other have stated, a small is a GIANT lunch for most people, and the large is easily two dinner portions for very hungry people.

In this review, I am strictly focusing on the incredible service I get here for catering services each time. I occasionally grab a bite here as a guilty pleasure when I want a greasy steak, chicken, or stuffed pork loin sub with all the fixings, but what I really get here is the corporate catering. Rose is wonderful in taking care of my needs whenever I post an order. The catering is a contrast to the simple wrap-the-massive-portion-up-to-go meals people grab here that are wonderful on the wallet and disastrous to a dietitian. The food is not much different, except I am more prone to order the chilled sandwiches instead of hot when I am in the store. Sandwiches are always cut to small individual portions and neatly displayed, and comparable to ordering from Cosi, Viga, et al when they put down a full variety. I've had good experiences with the assortments of subs/sandwiches, cannoli, salads, breakfast offerings, and pastas. Haven't had pizza catered; hasn't suited the crowd. The food is kept simple and delivery is very on-time. All the fixings... plates, dressings, utencils, cheese, sauces come in an ornately decorated wicker basket made for the season with more than enough settings for everyone. Pricing, I worry the prices might be too low. People would never know I ordered from Capone's unless they saw the bill. Overall, it is a great combination of price and quality and fits above the line in that equation for me. Thanks for the help every time, Rose. However, I have no clue why a bottle of Frank's Red Hot would come with platters of breakfast sandwiches and bagels.

Not bad. The decor is nothing impressive but I didn't really have enough time to look around as this place is CRAZY. I had no idea how big the menu was until I got in line and looked up. I had no idea what to order so I settled for a junior italian. Bread was good. Fresh baked. The meat and veggies were good and all fresh...and the people behind the counter were very nice...and FAST!!! Girl behind the register was ok. Got the job done. So for $6.50 I got a junior sub, chips and bottle of water. Not a bad deal and portions are HUGE!!! Definitely worth giving a try if you want a decent, cheap lunch that's gonna fill your tummy up! Wasnt the most outstanding food I have ever eaten, but worth going back to...especially with such appealing prices.

  • Zane G.

Fresh food, LARGE portions, great staff. Their large sub is TWENTY (20) inches long with plenty of selections to fill it with and its only TEN dollars! People are not stuck up here, there are plenty of free samples, and everything is delicious, how can you go wrong?

  • Julie T.

I love going here cuz it's an awesome value. Honestly, they give you so much food for the amount that you pay...do they even make a profit? I have only ever finished a whole entire large (20") sub once before. The guy behind the counter making my sub was incredibly nice. I got a steak and cheese and he wasn't bothered by anything that I asked for. Onions, peppers, mushrooms, cheese...he piled it on! I brought it home and devoured it all. That's one other thing. I never eat there cuz I don't want people seeing me stuffing my face, the oil dribbling down my chin with a huge grin on my face. I'd rather bring it home where no one can see me. And yes, like everyone else said, the large sub will normally last you three meals. I'd say a meal and a snack for me. Haha. I'm telling you. This place is awesome if you're broke and want something hearty enough to last you a while.

Stumbled across this 'hole in the wall' pizza place one night walking back to our hotel on a recent visit to Boston. And I mean 'hole in the wall' in the nicest way possible. Not much on atmosphere, but what they lack there, they make up with the great food. Everything is out in the open, pizzas and subs are made right in front of you with all the ingredients in plain site. They even make their own sausage in house. How great is that! And you can't beat the value. Where else can you get a 16' 3-topping pizza for $11.25? Not in California, that's for sure. We had the Meat Lovers Special the first night and we liked it so much we went back again two days later and had it again. My only complaint was the cheap tasting olives. Maybe I'm spoiled being from California and all, but I can pick out a cheap Spanish or Argentinian olive at 50 paces. Otherwise I would have given this place 5 stars.

This place is a fantastic spot to grab a fast lunch downtown. The slices are gigantic and come in a lot of variations. Subs here should be called tankers, they are like having 2 meals. I would recommend this place to anyone. Also there was this really hot girl that worked at the pizza slice counter that had the nicest rack ever, it just added to the over all value you get.

Great pizza and cheap! We ordered 6 large pizzas, a salad for 10 and a large soda at work and the bill was $105! And they deliver. The lady who took the order was very nice. The BEST breakfast sandwiches in the downtown area. Eggs cooked on the griddle, melty cheese, toasted english muffin. The perfect solution to being hungover and miserable at your desk in the middle of the week. Whoops. The pizza's good, the subs are good. This place doesn't pretend to be something it's not and it's cheap.

    (4)

Preface: This is based only on their subs alone. There is no other place that I can spend 7 bucks and have 3 meals. These things are huuuuge. The staff is always wicked friendly. The guy at the register always asks me if I have my Al Capone stamp card. Seriously, when I want to grub all day at work... this is where I get my food from.

My mother always told me if I don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all, but this is Yelp and I'm starting to look a little too happy to be taken seriously as a critic with all my 5 star reviews. So I thought, and thought about someplace that absolutely disgusted me, and voila! I am trashing Al Capone's! This place is disgusting, I feel greasy just walking by it. You can smell it all around the block, ugh! Even from the outside you can tell someone needs to whip out a power hose and blast the place for a good 36 hours. When I first started working in the area I was warned not to come here because of unusually high number of board of health code violations. I've worked in many restaurants so it didn't stop me. Between highschool and college I have about 5 years of pizza place experience. Okay, okay, prices versus quantity, I can see why people would risk their lives here. I've been broke too, but I know exactly how long a pizza's been sitting around just by looking at it. Still I went ahead to give the flavor a chance. I would have spit it out at them and demanded my money back had someone who loves the place not "treated" me to it. I've avoided the place since, but still it continues to haunt me. I know if someone's been in the elevator with their food, their nasty smell is that distinctive. True story: A nameless secretary I know had the bravery to actually sit in this place and eat her whatever. When she came back I asked her if she'd gone there, but of course I knew already by that distinctive nasty smell. 30 minutes later she notices how badly her coat smelled from being in there. She decides to hang it in the closet to get it away from her. I never saw this coming! At the end of the day I so innocently leave work and I can smell that distinctive nasty smell, must be the elevator again, yes? No, it followed me into the subway before I realized it was me!?! I had just dry cleaned my coat the day before and it REEKED just from being near hers in a closet!?! Gross, gross, gross!!! I didn't even have to eat there for it to make me sick, and it cost me the value of a week's worth of stinky meals there to remedy the problem they created for someone who didn't even eat there. There you have it, there is a place I hate and this is it! Cheers!

Edit: Continued visits to Al's have worn out the novelty somewhat. The real draw is the prices, the huge size of the subs and pizza slices, and the sweet downtown location. The subs are pretty good, but not spectacular . You can get better tasting stuff elsewhere. The pizza, however, is good. Ib summary, if you work around here, it's good for the occasional lunch, but I wouldn't devote a bunch of time to seek this place out from afar. -------------------- I visit Al Capones for lunch once a week. It takes discipline not to go more often. If this place wasn't so well known, I'd call it a "best kept secret" because of it's speedy service, tasty subs, and great portion-size to price ratio. AC'S also serves pizza, which I personally haven't tried because I love their subs but I've heard is fantastic. They also have a wide variety of breads available for your sub, which is another nice source of variety. All in all, I highly recommend you check out Al Capone's if you're near Downtown Crossing (if you live in the greater boston area, you need to make sure you go here at least once). Make sure you know what you want when you order, things happen pretty quick in there.

Mangia! Al don't skimp on the old Family recipe. And his delivery drivers can find you... wherever you are, capisce? Don't do nothin' halfway - if you want to eat like a Don, or even send a pie to your favorite Donna, count on Al Capone's.

Apparently this place is closed down due to them owing $40,000 in back taxes. boston.com/news/local/ma… Yes, the name is Al Capnoe's and yes, they got pinched because of taxes. I am a little disappointed this place closed down, but I will just have to find a way to survive. Al Capone's did have a niche though, and that was to give you a crap load of food for not much money. I remember their Large subs (20") were easily 2 Large meals. I would say that this is one of the only places for me to even not finish their meal, but I think it's clear they don't expect anyone to finish their large in one sitting. Not all their food was good, but they did make a mean steak and cheese. What I won't miss is their poor ventilation system and having your clothes reek even after getting food to go. Fairwell Al, you will be missed (somewhat).

  • Amanda Z.

Good luck vegans...this is not the place for you... However, for the gluttonous or insatiable...oh, you've found heaven. Whenever I am poor, and want a sandwich to last me three meals, I hop in and get a veggie sub. It will be lunch, then dinner, then lunch again if the oil and vinegar hasn't made the bread too disgusting. Can't speak for any of the hot food, but after three years of Boston prices eating their way through my checking account, I have to thank Al.

I can't believe how cheap this place is. You can get an entire small pizza (which is plenty for 2 to share in my opinion) for $5! Their small sub is absolutely enormous (seriously, it's gotta be 12"), and for $6.50 I cut it in half and have two full lunches. This is not high quality food. This is the kind of food you eat when you're ravenously hungry, only have a few bucks, and just want something big, greasy and fast. Oh, and they have breakfast! Disturbingly cheap, frighteningly greasy, wonderfulling filling breakfast. Tip: Go on their website and print out their monthly coupons. You'll save yet another buck.

If you want a cheep sub or slice, Capone's is the way to go. Not going to find any place cheeper in town. Now if you want something good to eat, Capone's is not the way to go. The food is garbage. Sub Standard at best. Make sure that when you are eating you are somewhere near a toilet because you are sure to have a nasty and explosive bowel movement within minutes.

It's human nature to be fascinated with hyperbole. The Colossus at Rhodes, the Titanic, that strange contraption they haul the Space Shuttle launch pad around on. Al Capone's sixteen-inch sandwich. The decor is not uplifting. The short guy behind the counter with the apron and one arm shorter than the other is probably scowling. There's probably a line. But that's not the point. The point is you can split one sub with a friend and both be stuffed. Or split two subs between three friends and have leftovers. The cold cuts here are good, but the chicken parm is a testament to the concept of 'oh my God how am I going to eat all that'? And the eggplant parm is even tastier, if not as big on shock value. I don't sit here, I don't wait around here, I don't get pizza here. This is a sub shop to me, and Al Capone makes one the size of a Seawolf class attack vessel.

  • Tommy C.

I've gone to this place a couple of times, the first was mediocre at best, the second amazing. The steak and cheese is directly correlated with the mediocrity: plan flavor, too oily, and bad to deal with the surliest cashier girl. BUT the second time, got some pizza, lady that handle the cash was extremely friendly and, even though he was new, the pizza boy was accommodating.

big, cheap, generous subs. i tried the roast beef, which was pretty satisfying but not that ambitious. they've got a lot on their sub menu, so i'll go back and man up to something easier to f-up. see if they're 4 or 5 stars. but the real reason they get 5-- the price. plus i respect any place that advertises a 20" sub, and DE-LIVERS.

  • Geoffrey R.

This is your typical blue collar deli. The portions are huge, the prices aren't bad, and we all know what that means. The quality... not so much. Their hot subs, I had a chicken parm, are overflowing with cutlet, and decent cheese, but the sauce tasted like it had been on the burner for a few days. The chicken was also a bit dry. I have heard that the cold subs are all bread and not much fixin's. but I am loathe to try them with that review. Overall, if you are super hungry, and not feeling like a foodie that day, go ahead and step into the dive deli that is Capone's.

Blech... I don't get all the love that's showered on this place. Sure, it's cheap. But it tastes cheap, too. I can't do it. I can't recommend a place where (1) you're scared to sit down and eat because of ... get this ... (2) the smell, and (3) it just looks dirty. Honestly. The only people who should eat here are people who don't care about food, care about money, and don't care about the consequences. What do I mean? Eat a grinder and find out. It won't be with you long. Yea, that's right. I hate to go there, but, I said it. I rented this food for about only 2 hours. Don't worry - reading this is about as disgusting as it is eating the food. Oh, yea - it's bland. My litmus test of an Italian grinder joint - THE MEATBALL SUB. It was blechily bland. Blech. It's that simple. There's just nothing to it. No spice, no flavor. Nada. Life is short. So is lunchtime. So value them - Spend that one extra dollar and walk that one extra block to find that other sandwich/Italian joint - like Sandwich Express!!!! ( yelp.com/biz/FE1irhDYyfx… ). You'll be happy, and your stomach will thank you. God Blech You.

Okay, I've been warned by co workers... but hey, it could never happen to me right? I had a cold sub on Tuesday, Went to the ER on Wedesday, and it's Sat. and I'm still not recovered. I was out 3 straight days from work. The good thing is, their pizza is really good. I guess if you're going there...make sure to get a hot sub.. Atleast it's more clean.

  • Keith C.

Main reason for liking this place so much is that for $8 you can buy a 20-inch chicken cutlet parmesan sub and decide to either 1) eat half of it for lunch and save the other half for dinner, or 2) bring it back to the office and eat all of it in under 30 minutes just to scare the you-know-what out of your interns and/or co-workers. OK, so the quality of the food here may only warrant three stars (good selection of edible food) and the seating area upstairs may not even get that many, but these guys do make up for it with kind service and very large portions for your buck. Given how much you can spend on lunch in Downtown Boston, this is worth the trip once in a while to make sure you can fill up without emptying the wallet.

    (4)
  • Amanda L.

I've only been here a handful of times but I've always been satisfied. Their 20" sub is gargantuan and it's priced ridiculously at $8.00. Only $8.00?! For literally two meals, you could share this with someone and still have a tummy ache from eating too much. I've never had the pizza, but it looks mighty yummy. The only drawback to the big sub, if you don't eat the whole thing at once, it gets disgustingly soggy, I had to throw it away because the bread was gross. I ate the chicken though =)

    (4)
  • Dillon B.

It's a sandwich shop, so don't go in expecting the best food in town ... That said I like the food, especially for the price. A Chipotle Steak and Cheese that is two meals for $9 ... works for me. The cold sandwiches aren't too bad, but the chicken salad was a little too mayo-infused for my taste. They use good olives which is always a plus. Compared to the crappy chains nearby, it's a good choice.

    (4)
  • James S.

Home of the 20 inch sub. 9 bucks basically gets you two 10 inch subs. Great for eat one now, eat one for dinner, or split it with a friend. I had the Chipotle Pepper steak. I don't recommend it as the Chipotle flavor was weird (a little too sweet) and the pepper was overpowering. But I thought the quality of the steak was very, very good and they made it to order. I would get a regular cheesesteak the next time there definitely. They have pizza available as well that I did not try but looked pretty darn good. Regular and Sicilian Deep Dish. This is an add on, but I feel it's important. I have noticed the last few times when one of my co-workers has gone here that when they come back their clothes will REEK of this place. It's kindof nice for about 2 seconds, then it is a little sickly. So I would warn against spending too much time inside this place, or wearing anything that would absorb odors easily, like wool. This being said, it's still a really, really good place to eat for the portions and quality.

I have eaten here twice. Once for lunch last week and today I got their breakfast. Both times have been meh. The reason they give you so much food is because the quality of the products is poor. Last week, I went to get a steak & cheese sub. The steak was real gummy and bland. The bread tasted stale. Of course the subs are big but I ended up throwing away 3/4ths of it as I couldn't stomache it. Today I got the breakfast house special. On their website, it does't show that it includes pancakes but when you go there, the price has been updated to $6.50 and it now includes pancakes. You also get toast, homefries, 3 eggs and bacon and a muffin. I got scammed on the muffin. Wasn't included. There was no way they used 3 eggs. 2 maybe but definitely not 3. They actually poured the eggs out of a bin so it's like how can they measure it anyway? The bacon was soo fatty and undercooked. You can only eat perhaps 15% of the bacon and the rest was fatty cold crap that I threw away. I would say tore off but it was easier to tear off the good parts of the bacon and throw the rest out. The home fries were awful and looked like they were soaked in mud. They're these small flat chip sized home fries but they must have put them in dirty grease or something as they were all black stained and had a bottom-of-a-shoe taste to them. I didn't even think they were potatoes at first. The only decent item was teh pancakes and toast (which shouldn't be hard to screw up but hey). I would not go back here for either breakfast or lunch. I guess I should have known better. The place isn't well kept. I guess their food would be affected. I know it's hot but leaving the door open and the bread sitting on the shelves right there, mean that all the bugs and flies just have a field day. It's too cramped in the back for the workers to spread out and make a decent meal. They use the same stove for everything so they make eggs right on the stove next to the chicken their frying and next to that the pancakes and all the juices just flow together. Maybe I am being over-critical but you have to be with food. At least the people were nice. And no, I will not eat here again for either breakfast or lunch.

There's no strippers here or men in Zorro costumes However, They do have something you don't get hardly anywhere else. This is: VALUE FOR THE DOLLAR This my furry little friends is extremely rare these days and guess what else? THE FOOD IS REALLY GOOD How about that? Giant sandwiches on the bread of your choice. (I suggest the sesame braided rolls. Great pizza, breakfast and if you pick up a Metro in the morning then there is almost always a coupon to make it even cheaper. The emps are also very nice. Great pastrami too. I really likey. I do. A lot. and I love you all. Goodnight sleep tight and in the morning have a bite. CHOW baby

Capone's is my favorite place to grab a quick bite M-F. The subs are great as they come jam packed with quality ingredients and fresh bread. If you want to win the respect of Al (the owner) you MUST get the large sub. It is impossible to eat. No one in their right mind eats in the shop - try to get in and out as fast as possible to avoid smelling like chicken parm.

  • Lindsay D.

The quintessential greasy spoon for the hard working people of Downtown Crossing, Capone's has everything you could want in artery-clogging food. Everything is a steal here and they have weekly specials that are available via email to make it even cheaper. The best bargain is the pizza by the slice - frequent fliers get a punch card similar to those available at 7-11 for coffee; after you purchase N amount of slices with a beverage the next meal is on the house. Shazam, what a lifesaver for the young professionals who are employeed as indentured servants by advertising and marketing agencies in the area. Vegetarians need to beware of most offerings here however - stirfry dishes are all prepared on the same general grill and utensils aren't always washed or wiped between customers.

We had catered lunch from this place at school, and it included coupons for free subs. Nice touch. My friends and I came down here at around noon on a weekday, and it wasn't as busy as I expected. A few people eating and waiting for that food but that's about it. I ordered a steak and peppers sub, and it was made fresh, I saw the lady cook up some meat and make a nice big sub for me. As I can tell, the ingredients are fresh and everything is cooked to order. For the price, you cannot go wrong. $6 for a small, $8 (?) for a large! You can probably have the large for two meals. BTW, when you leave this place, you'll feel a bit greasy and you might smell like meat. That's ok. As you walk back to your destination, it'll air out.

good food. 20 inch subs for cheap. Guys were jerks behind the counter, but I don't expect much from a hole in the wall.

Delicious cheap large subs. I recommend the chipotle pepper steak sub.

Like many Yelpers have pointed out, this Downtown lunch spot has great value when it comes to subs. Their grilled steak subs are famous here and rightfully so with fresh shaved steak grilled to tasty perfection served on a huge bulkie. I always order the "small" which is equivalent to a large in many places for about 7.61 if I remember correctly. I'm not sure what human being can eat their 20" large sub. I'm pretty sure you can break that one down to 2-3 people easily. Overall, a good place for lunch. They also offer pizzas, soups, and salads.

Nice location for people who work in Downtown Crossing (like me) with quick and affordable pizza and subs for lunch, but the greasiness is overwhelming. Eating in the place during the Spring, Summer or Fall is tough to do since it is approximately 1000 degrees in there and as mentioned in another review, you will smell like chicken parm and pizza for the last half of your day. The pizza card is nice, buy a slice and get a stamp on your card, every 6th slice is free, but there are a few places with better pizza right nearby.

I love this place, for a quick cheep lunch or break-feast go no further. HUGE portions. I always love watching people come in and ask for 2 slices, and then seeing their responses when they are told that 2 slices is two-thirds of pizza. subs are yummy, people are friendly, place is busy but everything moves quick here.

A huge, cheap slice of pizza that is tasty and more than does the job of killing the remnants of a great night out. They are one of the few places in Downtown Crossing that stays open past 5:05pm, so that comes in handy too. I even had them deliver once for a dinner meeting at the office and they came exactly on time, to the minute.

A fuckton of food. I just ate lunch from here. I gave Al Capone $8 and he is now trying to kill me. Gastronomical Homocide. I may be dead by the time you read this.

Their slices of pizza are literally the size of 2 1/2 regular slices from anywhere else... Subs look to die for (huge) Prices are inexpensive for a bite on the run. It's a 5 minute walk from South Station so its location is ideal for takeout on the way home.

Got a chicken parm sub here once, had DARK meat. wanted to gag. Pizza is ok but for sure as others have said its all quantity over quality here.

Best lunch deal in town, great subs for only $5.00

Absolutely the freshest most amazing sub ingredients in the whole downtown area. Fresh mozzarella, pesto, capers, sun-dried tomatoes, and more. You've got to go to this place.

Like others have said. Their food is inexpensive. I used to get my breakfast their a couple of times a week. Nothing fancy, just a scrambled egg or and some toast. It was ok. Cheeeep. $0.50 an egg. Can't beat that. But they don't know how to scramble an egg. It's more like a slab of egg. Very over cooked. As for lunch their pizza is so-so. Not the best and not the worst. Their subs are gross. Whoever said their prosciutto was good is a bit off. Stringy and dry. Just thinking about it makes me gag. Yes they give you a lot of food for the money but it's not worth it. And to be honest I find the staff to be unbelievably unfriendly other than Rose who is the owner's wife. She is a doll.

Yeah I know when you walk out of this place you smell like it, but other than that Al Capone's is great. Their subs are awesome; haven't had their pizza or pasta, but the subs are a thing of gastronomic beauty!...humongous and good. The chicken parm is top notch. The chicken/steak stir fry is also a winner.

Both hot and cold subs here are a steal. A large one, for only $9, will last you a good 2 meals. For people who work in Downtown and are looking for some place quick and easy- Capone's in for you. For people working in Chinatown who are sick of pho- go to Capone's. I like to get them to go, and eat outside in the sun with some friends.

I can only speak to the subs, as that's all I've had, but they're fantastic. The roast beef is especially good and served very rare. The toppings are basic but great quality, and the bread is a great combo of crisp crust and chewy center.

Great place for cheap eats when downtown, especially for lunch. The small subs are plenty big for 99.9% of mortal men - but the large is such a good deal. I've had a couple of slices of their deep-dish pizza before, too - I enjoy getting that when I'm not as hungry / light on cash. The calzones aren't bad either. Now that I think about it, I don't know if I've had a bad meal from here before. Only problem that I have is the line that inevitably forms during lunch.

Prosciutto with oil unbelievable.. large chicken parm you gotta be an absolute fatty to finish it.. The selection is great the size is appropriate and they even pass out lil cards where you can get stamped for each time you come in. 10 stamps earns you a free sub. the smell is a lil.. interesting but whatever.. I don't mind or you can take it to go and eat outside when the weather is nice at Au Bon Pan and pretend you bought an eight dollar croissant like I do. :)

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
