A birthday cake is probably not the best thing to test a new bakery out with haha but this bakery is on my way home from work and had received good reviews from friends of mine who are fans of their doughnuts. I ordered my cake and came back a couple days later to pick it up. Overall the cake was ok. It was nice and soft- very sweet frosting, though the writing/flowers looked like a five year old did them. Also, they never mentioned the extra charge for the flowers (I knew from reading reviews here)- it just would've been nice if they mentioned that when they asked if I wanted flowers. Not a bad experience, def better than getting a cake at a supermarket but for something similar but even yummier next time I won't be so lazy and head to Lyndell's in Somerville.

Very big selection of baked goods, doughnuts, and breads. It's like a couple of bakeries exploded and all the baked goods landed right here. I got a cinnamon frosted coffee roll. It was delicious. The apple fritters are good. They also make something called TV snack cakes. They're kind of like radio bars, but with marshmallow instead of frosting. Be careful driving. I guess the closer you get to Boston the worse the intersections get.

Ohlins was recently cited by the Boston Globe for having the best donuts in greater Boston. With multiple investigatory trips, I've found no reason to dispute this. their glazed donuts are meltingly delicious. I like the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting myself and the apple fritters are mind-numbingly good. If you need to get your sugar fix. This is the place. I hear the bread is good too. Maybe some day I'll buy a loaf.

We moved to Belmont about three and a half years ago and came here for the first time about a week after we moved into our new house just up the street. The donuts were amazing! My other favorites would include the (usually giant, but sometimes smaller, depending on the day) cinnamon maple buns and the apple fritters. I have one complaint though and that is why my review is not 4 or 5 stars. THE PRICE!!!! When we first moved here you could get a dozen donuts for 7 something. (I think it was $7.75). Now when you go in you can get a dozen donuts for about $10.50. The price just kept going up a few cents whenever we came! I am very happy to pay an extra dollar or even two over Dunkin Donuts $6.99/dozen price because these donuts are so much better but this is absurd. I have now started going down the street to Linda's donuts where the donuts are twice the size of Ohlin's donuts and cost a little bit less ($10/dozen)!!! The donuts at Linda's and Ohlins are both very good but I go to Linda's more often because they are much cheaper.

I am very glad that by the time we got here, they only had honeydipped donuts left. If they had a lager selection, I may have purchased more than one donut (maybe one of each). I also would have eaten more than one donut (maybe one of each). So it is very very good that they only had very very good honeydipped donuts left when we got there.

The new owners have truly destroyed this place! What limited selections they have are poorly displayed, not priced clearly and many items are simply not fresh, case in point the the cake with saggy browning strawberries. I get the concept of old world charm believe me, but this place has really become run down, it;s tired, and just dirty; from the peeling tiles on the floors to the crumbs and shmootz in and on the showcases! Stuff everywhere, none of the displays make any sense, I saw sloppy frosted cakes, and cupcakes for $3.00 a piece. They offer a cake called a "Russian Coffee Cake" which looked like they took yesterdays leftover danish, muffins, and who knows what, cut it all up and blended it together with some jam and re-baked into a loaf for $9.00, I was completely grossed out...NEVER AGAIN! This place has such potential but it's poorly managed.

Best donuts I've ever had. I'm not sure if its crack that's added to the donuts that makes them so delicious but whatever it is, they always have me coming back for more. Maple chocolate, jelly filled, glazed.... its all good. Now in your best Homer Simpson Voice, "hmmm donuts"

SO delicious! Donuts are always fresh and the people working are always super nice! Parking can be a bit of a problem depending on when you go but that's a hit or miss with all street parking. Their coconut donut is my favorite!

My girlfriend and I bought a few doughnuts from 5 different doughnut places to compare and contrast the best doughnuts in the area. Ohlin's won it for me. Their doughnuts taste fresh and homemade. The boston creme is excellent. I like the decor, it fits and people who complain about it are pansies. Incidentally the 4 places Ohlin's beat were: Kane's in Saugus, Linda's in Watertown, Verna's in Cambridge, and Union Sq. Doughnuts in Somerville.

When I was growing up we had a small bakery right in the center of town, kind of a mid sized place and if you had donuts at school or someone's house it was a safe bet that they came from there. That also meant that there was a really good chance of running into people that you knew and it felt a bit like one of the hubs of town. The only problem is that they overused crisco and their stuff wasn't that great. Ohlin's is the mini sized of that place that dropped out of nowhere from an atlernate universe where they are highly trained at making baked goods, nothing pretentious but regular donuts and cookies that are just what you would expect but a little bit better than you thought, but all of that doesn't really matter because when you walk in the doors and are helped by the staff you feel like you're a neighbor that just walked down the street.

My colleague from work brought in two dozen of these deelicious hand-cut donuts and they are super tasty. Made old school style with a maple glaze. I can't even begin to tell you how completely tasty they are but I've tried in my previous sentence. If you get the chance to pick some up, do so.

Amazing doughnuts, seriously. I neither know nor care what else they have because their doughnuts are more than enough already. I looked at some of the 1s and I think that the bottom line is that Ohlin's is for doughnuts. Doughnut shops are not meant to be glamorous and have ambiance (or even good bagels), they are meant to have awesome doughnuts (and probably smell like doughnuts too).

  • David M.

Very good donuts and a great selection of other pastry and cakes. Not a fancy place, just good baked goods in a simple shop. As another reviewer put it: Ohlin's is what it is: good.

  • Kari P.

Serving Belmont since 1915 - that's how you know it's good! Across the board, the donut flavors are quite excellent. I'm more of a simple person and I love their glazed, which is always a good starting point! I'd definitely recommend.

I made the mistake of stopping at Ohlin's the other day. Now I can't stop thinking about the amazing coconut crunch donut I had. Ohlin's is directly on my way home from the gym (I think my love for exercise is cancelled out by my love of food), and I dropped in on a Saturday around noon. To my surprise, there was still a decent selection of donuts left, so I decided to get half a dozen: glazed, sugar raised, and the coconut crunch ones. I judge a place by their glazed donut. If you can't get a glazed donut right, I don't trust you. Ohlin's got it right. The donut was super soft and fluffy, but also dense enough to be filling. The glaze was absolutely delicious. The coconut crunch donut may be the best thing I have ever put in my mouth (I know...that's what she said). SO good. Good thing I don't really live too close to this place. I haven't tried any of the other treats, but I plan on going back. I just wish they would take credit cards!

I was told this place has the BEST donuts in the world. I stopped here before going to work and saw the "FRESH BAGEL" sign on and I was feeling more like a bagel than a donut. The lady behind the counter was very nice and took my order quickly. I ordered a plain bagel with plain cream cheese and a Cinnamon raisin bagel with plain cream cheese. The prices were very reasonable. THE BAGELS ARE AWFUL AND THEY ARE NOT FRESH LIKE THE SIGN WOULD MAKE YOU THINK, UNLESS FRESH MEAN IT WAS MADE THIS YEAR. The bagel must have been laying out as it was very hard and hardly chewable. The cream cheese was OK, But overall this was awful and I would drive to Cambridge next time I am in the mood for a bagel rather than stop at this place ever again for bagels. I should have ordered a donut....

Yes, Ohlin's has terrific donuts. Try their Honey Health bread too - delicious with some honey/cinnamon butter! No, I don't think Ohlin's has been updated since it opened some 50 years ago. This place looks tired. It is frequently very hot and greasy smelling in the store. We ordered a birthday cake recently and while the cake itself was good, the decorating job was beyond terrible. My 9 year old would have done a better job with the border icing and message on the cake. I was very embarrassed by the look of this cake. The manger "was not going to be available for two weeks". S/he never did call me. Other items in the bakery (cookies) with icing seem to have been decorated by the same incompetent person. Go for the donuts. Leave it at that.

OK, I did NOT just stop and buy 2 donuts.... and proceed to snarf them down completely in the car! That did NOT just happen!

In 2009 someone on yelp wrote that the place needed a facelift. Nothing has changed. This used to be our family's go to birthday cake place. The butter cream frosting is cloyingly yummy. Cake's moist. However, as I waited for personalization on my cake, I couldn't help looking around. Have you ever looked at the linoleum flooring visible beneath the many year old snow mats? It's disgusting. Look closely at the racks in the cases- I wanted to just SCRUB them. I was surprised that a few blossoms and "happy birthday" cost $4.00 extra. Colors used for icing are garish- nothing subtle about them. Tone DOWN the green, purple and blue and do a little better on the flowers. Sadly, this was probably our last Ohlin's cake.

Some of the BEST homemade doughnuts around. Reccomendations: Buttercrunch Maple Boston Creme But they are all very very good.

  • Heather S.

Dried muffins and dry pecan rolls. I haven't tried their donuts, but their rolls and breads look good. I know it's hard to keep pastries moist, but making muffins moist is easy. I don't understand why their baked items lack moisture as well as flavor. Ohlin's = Oh, well.

Love Ohlin's. Its an old school type bakery. Love their cupcakes, cookies, cakes, and customer service - everyone is always nice. My (young) kids prefer Dunkin Donuts for donuts, but everything else we get here. Parking can be difficult, but is free (on street).

Fantastic bakery. Period. And everything is cheap! Ohlin's is a great place for anything - cakes, doughnuts, cookies and pastries. I was particularly impressed by the cakes. Word is that the original glazed doughnuts sell out pretty quickly in the morning - so if you want one, get there early. The best part is that the staff is incredibly friendly and willing to make suggestions. We learned the bakers start at 2am daily. Wow. Can't wait for more Ohlin's.

  • David T.

Something about a buttercrunch doughnut just makes my pulse race. Perhaps it is a sign that my arteries are trying to tell me something? How about I just attribute it to the fact that they are simply delicious. Ohlin's has fresh & tasty homemade buttercrunch doughnuts (and loads of other varieties as well) along with various cakes, pastries and other yummy stuff. Had a bagel here once...it was so-so...no selection of cream cheese other than plain...back to the doughnuts I went; why mess with a good thing? Some of the cakes are beautiful and I will definitely be trying one next time I have a cake-worthy occasion to buy one for.

The world's best donuts! Cakes are fantastic too. I love the butter cream and fudge icing. The "Jimmy Fudge Bar" a loaf shaped chocolate cake with fudge icing and jimmies is a real treat. The counter staff are always super sweet and friendly. The decor is old school and it's strictly take out. Prices are quite reasonable.

After years of living down the street and constantly walking and jogging by Ohlins I finally went in! A cute little local bakery right in Cushing Square with all sorts of amazing baked goods in the cases - donuts, cakes, cookies, pies, bagels etc. Everything looked wonderful, especially after a long run that had me craving carbs! I settled on an enormously flavorful, fluffy, and fresh french toast bagel that I ate plain, as is. It was an amazing carbohydrate experience! It was one of the best bagels I have had recently and sure beat a trip to nearby Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts for the same thing. I will definitely be back again to try any one of Ohlins other amazing treats available - I really want to try the handmade donuts that seem to be quite popular! This is a cash only business so make sure to have plenty on hand!

Damn, Ohlin's, why you gotta be right near my pilates studio??? That, my friends, is what they call torture. On the weekends, after class I'll stop by for a couple of bagels as a treat. The bagels are good. Very good. Light and airy. Love 'em. We've tried donuts here and they get a big thumbs-up. Same with the pastries- the cheese danish and apple fritters are perfection! They are cash-only under $10 and then credit cards are accepted. I'm not sure if that's a new policy or what. I was pretty sure the whole operation was cash-only, but perhaps I didn't see the sign previously. You can place orders for holidays (they make all kinds of breads and rolls). Everyone I've encountered here has been nice and smiley and patient as I make up my mind. I'm hoping to try the cookies on another visit as well as a cake or some bread. Everything looks and smells delicious in this place. For real. Bakeries are my downfall.

I'm basing my four start rating on the donuts alone. They are amazing! I went around 2:30 PM on a rainy Friday afternoon. There was a gaggle of middle-schoolers out front licking sugar of their fingers so that in itself is an excellent sign for someone who adores donuts. The shop is small and classic-family owned. I didn't notice anything off about the cleanlyness of the place, yes its a bit run down but doesn't that add to the character? I got a 1/2 dozen donuts (jelly, maple frosted, 2 honey dipped and the butternut). Every single bite was incredible. The maple tasted like maple. The donuts were pillowy and soft with just enough bite to keep them from getting mushy. I will be back again and again for the donuts, I don't care how far I need to drive. I did get a few mini cupcake and a few cookies but they were pretty lackluster and the kind that have more shorting that actual butter. The cake part of the cupcake was nice and moist with a good crumb but not all that tasty (not worth the calories). Again, this is an old-school place and they probably haven't heard about trans-fats. Service was wonderful and very nice. They take credit cards for over $10.

Great neighborhood bakery with delicious donuts! Keep the local mom and pop shops alive and buy your coffee and donuts here!

This is where sugar goes when it dies if it's very very good. The donuts are wonderful. The cakes and cookies look bright and cheerful and gooey and amazing. Basically, everything looks absolutely scrumptious. Diabetics will particularly appreciate that they have big fluffy apple or blueberry turnovers with no sugar added for diabetics.

I'm a bit split on Ohlin's. We get nearly every birthday cake for our family here. They have that old-school milk chocolate frosting on gold cake that you can't find anywhere these days. I've never had their coffee, but here's my general run-down of everything I have tried: donuts and breakfast pastry - very good cake - excellent muffins - good fancy pastries - too sweet cookies - too dry and too sweet coffee breads - very good In short, I go there for donuts or cakes. Their individual pastries are the things I usually skip. They also have a rack of day-old stuff (which is where I assume the guy who said their stuff is way too old went). It's usually still good for toasting and it's cheap.

The distance between three stars and five can be measured by a cup of coffee. That, unfortunately, is the difference at Ohlin's. They've discovered how to add that "something extra," that vaults a mere pastry into the culinary stratosphere. Whether it's the butter crunch danish, the danish, the cupcakes Ohlin's adds just enough of a twist to their baked goods to make them different and memorable in a good way. Doughnuts, of many different varieties, are an impressive part of the selection, and merit a special mention. There is a huge difference between a mass produced doughnut and a handmade one. Ohlin's have taste, texture, and a consistency that makes them superior to anything stamped out by a machine in some far away plant. They're easily the best in Belmont and elsewhere. Prices are surprisingly reasonable, even for Belmont and the selection offers enough to satisfy just about any possible demand or desire for sugary baked goods. Family members have used Ohlin's when they've wanted to celebrate a special occasion or make an impression. Their baked goods have never disappointed. The coffee, however, is another story. It's weak, not too flavorful and kind of takes away from the other good things here. Skip it, just get the baked goods, and you'll leave satisfied.

I have been at work all night. I finished my shift at 5 a.m., got gas, drove around a little, and now it is 5:38 and I am sitting in my car outside Ohlin's waiting for them to open in 22 minutes. Ignoring for the moment what all of this might say about me, what does this tell you about how good the doughnuts are?

I live within walking distance of this place and feel so lucky that I can get fresh pastries without having to drive to the local supermarket. I came by here a few years ago and picked up a cake for dinner. I found it unimpressive, but that was before I found Yelp. I agree with all the Yelp reviews that doughnuts are the thing to get here. OMG...the doughnuts definitely stand out and are way better than Linda's. Everything here has a homemade quality about it. The doughnuts, even the squished honey dip ones that I got, were still very good. I was worried about how they would taste when they put them into my box. The blueberry muffins are filled with blueberries and are a little smaller than how they are sized at other bakeries and markets. It's a good size b/c often times I can't finish a whole muffin. The bagels look like they were made by hand and not a machine and tasted nice and fresh. Also, I really like the decaf coffee they serve there. It's nothing special, but it tastes better than the decaf coffee that I get from most places.

I have recently been scouring Boston for donut shops. I have been to most of the ones on Yelp. There are some good ones in the bunch for sure and it does depend on what types of donuts you like (more the cake donut person or yeast), but I have to say the Ohlin's is just the best. First, they have a great variety of donuts, more than almost any other small shop around. Second, they are consistent. I went to Ohlin's almost every Friday for over two years to pick up about 3 dozen donuts for my company. They were ready every time and they did an outstanding job. The quality and consistency is just superb. Price is also very reasonable. And, they have so much more is you want it, cakes, cupcakes, cookies, pies, breads. They have something called the TV Treat that is out of this world, but not a donut. About the donuts, there are very few places around that make an apple fritter, let alone a good one (won't find them at Demet's, Verna's, Donut's with a Difference, Linda's, Kane's, etc), but the key is that they make SUCH A GOOD APPLE FRITTER. It is really to die for. Very big, but just the right amount of slight crisp on the outside, but lots of apple, raisin, cinnamon, and flaky dough on the inside. You have to have these. Then, they have the boston crème, but also have the fluff filled. I asked them for a maple with fluff and they did it for me every week even though they normally don't make those. There are some great donut places out there for sure. But for the widest variety, most consistently good, and tasty donuts, this place rules.

Excellent donuts....came here on a recommendation from a co-worker and had the honey-dipped donuts. They were gone quickly. My wife had a blueberry cake donut which was also great. $4 well-spent! We will be back.

Oh my god, these are our favorite donuts in the Boston area. Just try everything, because it's all delicious. On weekends, we make the drive out here all the way from East Cambridge, and it's definitely worth it. The maple frosted lives up to all the hype. The blueberry is also quite good. Same with the double chocolate donut. Same with everything. Don't fret, just buy them all. It's kind of pathetic how many people are buying prepackaged pastries across the street at Starbucks when they could just stop in here for a pastry to have with their morning coffee.

I recently went to Ohlin's for the first time. I'd heard so many great things and wanted to try their donuts. I grabbed a sampler and here are my thoughts: Buttercrunch: The name is misleading, because what they call Buttercrunch is actually Toasted Coconut. It says so right on the sign identifying the donut. That's right, the Buttercrunch is actually a Toasted Coconut donut. Why not just call it Toasted Coconut? Very disappointing. Glazed: Hard to mess up a glazed donut. This was a perfectly fine donut, but it did have a greasy aftertaste. Old Fashioned Glazed: A cake donut that's glazed. This was the best of the bunch. Very, very good, but again, a greasy aftertaste. Chocolate Glazed: A chocolate cake donut that's glazed. Not nearly enough chocolate taste and it wasn't surprising, given the pale brown color of the donut. The people who were there were VERY nice, but the donuts were truly disappointing. My quest for a great donut continues.

Of all the donut shops I've ever frequented, this is the only one I imagine could hold its own on a reality TV show. Like "Apocalypse Cupcake" or something. That's not necessarily a compliment, but somehow they make the vibe work for them. It's got the over-cute decor, the super-friendly, hyper-energetic young staff, and a clientele so upscale that I almost feel guilty if I defile the place by stopping off for a double chocolate before I've shaved and washed behind my ears. But I do it anyway, because the double chocolate is awesome. It's similar to Verna's, but with a slightly more durable glaze and a slightly less rich fry. On the plus side, they also frost it with chocolate. Which, when you get down to it, is a pretty huge plus side. Speaking of plus sides, their maple frosted raised donut is the best in the business. And by "the business" I mean "greater Boston." That frosting has a wonderful, substantial texture that makes biting into one of those a weirdly visceral experience, even though the raised dough is exactly as soft and rich as it ought to be. The buttercrunch is the other go-to raised -- it's a butternut covering on a raised, glazed donut. They're common out west, where standard butternuts almost don't exist, but I don't see many around here. Their other cake donuts are fun too -- the dough they use for the old fashioneds is sweet and pure in a most undonutlike way. Almost like a lighter, deep-fried shortcake.

This place is one of our favorites, we live in Belmont, we go there for the their donuts and their bagels. French toast bagel in a Sunday morning...mmmm Very very consistent place, love their products, great girls that say hi to you all the time and are quick and nice. And yes, go for the donuts. Every time my parents visit from Mexico City, they ask for a plain donut from here, every time. They just love them.

I want to try and be fair to the few negative comments that Ohlin's has received. True, it's a non-fancy, non-patisserie bake shop (there's nothing here that evokes the words "Flaky, Delicate or Elegant"). No, Joanne Chang doesn't work here and you can't get your Half Double Decaffeinated Half-Caf with a twist of lemon (tip of the hat to Steve Martin.) Oh, and if you're looking for a good bagel in Boston, I'm sympathetic, but you're already fighting an uphill battle my friend. No, this right here is a local bakery that's been serving local customers for a long while. Customers who probably like that it's had the same decor for decades. Customers who have their favorites and like to stop by and get those favorites and not have to wonder whether this bake shop is doing something with Meyer Lemon like every other fancy bake shop just because they saw it last night on Food Network. Or Bravo. Or read that Martha Stewart uses it. This is a bakery that makes great donuts. And I'm going to repeat that: Great Donuts. The best I've ever had in Boston. Very likely the best I've ever had anywhere. They are light, but not too light. Sweet, but not too sweet. The cake donuts get that great crispy-crunch taste when you bite into them. The marshmallow creme donuts are classics, like what I used to have at my Grandmother's kitchen table in Brighton on Sunday mornings. The Strawberry frosted are beautiful and simple and cheerful. The Maple Frosted donuts, drizzled with chocolate frosting, are among the best things in the world. They are worth a trip all the way over there. The rest of their baked goods are between decent and good. The jelly rolls are a tasty throwback, the half-moons are respectable, the cookies are pretty good. But if you go there, go for the donuts. Ohlin's is the perfect example of "it is what it is." It's a local place that makes perfect donuts. If you don't like what they have, it's because you wanted them to be something they aren't. And I will always love them for that...being what they are and not trying to be what they aren't. (And if they aren't what you want, there's an Athan's in one direction and a Whole Foods in another. Enjoy.)

I went to a meeting today and noticed a box of donuts from Ohlin's. I'd never heard of them, but always willing to try new things. They were too delicious. I would have eaten more than 3, but didn't want to look uncouth.

Ohlin's not only does it right, they do it the best in my opinion! We have been ordering pies during the holidays from them for a few years, and everyone loves them - there's never any left overs unfortunately! For our daughters 3rd birthday, we decided to order a custom cake from Ohlin's and they hit it out of the park. It was a large vanilla frosting and vanilla cake decorated to look like Cookie Monster. It was a crowd pleasure, not only in taste, but its look (attached a photo to their page.) Great job & thank you again! PS...Stop by for some donuts and cookies if you're in the area, they won't disappoint & splash it down with the decent variety of Green Mountain Coffee too!

Meh, a mom and pop donut shop that may appear to have run its course. Nothing special, donuts are okay and service is fair. There is not much difference between your typical dunkin donut and a Ohlin donut.

Just another update - just went there in person for the first time (usually had these brought to me by my boyfriend) and the staff is just so nice. They have a ton of self-serve coffee (the green mountain stuff with a few flavors), and maybe it's just because of ease of service and wait-time reduction, but I LOVE places that have self serve coffee stations. The staff was super friendly, and they had a ton of baked goods in their cases. I was overwhelmed, but we got a couple of additional things to sample while we were there; a cupcake and two pastries. As someone who normally eats the icing off of the cake and throws the rest of the cake away (admitting it is the first step), I was pleased enough to eat the whole cake. The pastries we got were amazing as well. Really really happy with this place, probably the best bakery in all of Massachusetts, let alone the greater Boston area.

We have a staple list of favorites that we get from here. I am a huge chocolate covered doughnut and jelly doughnut fan but I always am amazed at how much I enjoy their strawberry doughnut. The butternut doughnut is another staple and we enjoy getting the doughnut holes as well. I agree the maple is also excellent. My family has to be tired of me questioning aloud each time we have doughnuts as to why anyone would ever buy doughnuts at a chain whose doughnuts taste as if they have been sitting around at least 3 days compared to these. People are truly missing out if they choose the chain over small doughnut shops particularly this one as the freshness and melt in your mouth taste is definitely worth driving the extra blocks or miles.

Agreed that "it is what it is," and what it is, it is good at. Most people are here for the donuts, and that is what they absolutely, unquestionably excel at. Honey-dipped chocolate is my personal choice. They also have great cookies, by the way! Cakes and bread on the other hand are a bit pricey; generally it's still worth it but there are other places as good at that price range (unlike the peerless donuts/cookies). Coffee is an obvious afterthought. But there is no question that it's worth going out of your way for these donuts!

Best doughnuts I have ever had- previously Krispy Kremes were my favorite (yes, I'm originally from the south)-but one bite of the maple and chocolate covered still warm yeast raised nirvana I purchased and all thoughts of KK flew away. I also bought a danish (which I didn't eat but the man I care for woofed down like there was no tomorrow) and a couple of brownies to meet the $10 credit card minimum and they were good as well. Not fabulous like their doughnuts but good. There is nothing at all pretentious or chi-chi about this place. It is good, old fashioned, sugary, real baked goods served by genuinely friendly staff. If you want fancy and frou fou, go to the place by the train station downtown and pay twice the money for half the selection, half the taste and a nasty attitude from the one counter person who is obviously not a morning person. As for me, I found my new morning spot.

Ohlin's loses one star for not having very good cheesecake. That is my single complaint and now on to the songs of praise... I love (love, love, love, love, love) their donuts (way too much). Full disclosure: My lovely lady currently works at Ohlin's. This lead me to visit an average of three times a week for several weeks, and while I was there for a morning kiss before the hell that is the 73 bus, the ulterior motive of grabbing a glazed or chocolate frosted donut was too strong to repress. Plus, they're 85 cents and you can get 'em while they're still warm if you show up by 8:30. Who needs Krispy Kreme? As for those who are underwhelmed by the Green Mountain coffee, all I can say is get your cheap and delicious pastry, then head directly across Trapelo for a Starbucks coffee. Ohlin's isn't a coffee shop. You can't walk in and grab a table and bask in a cafe-like atmosphere. It is an in and out, so if you're picky about your coffee, grab it elsewhere... you can't really stay anyway. Personally, I just appreciate that it is self-serve and I don't have to wait on a barista to fill the orders of the 10 other people ahead of me. My first Yelp and I'm already lying to you... I do have one other complaint. No credit cards accepted, but look at it this way; carry at least a small amount of cash at all times is responsible, and here's one more incentive to get you to actually do it.

What can I say about Ohlin's?? The Mom and Pop feel really adds to the reason why I enjoy going when I have the chance. Most importantly, the apple fritters, apple muffins, and coconut donuts are superb. And for the price, this is a gem that can't be missed. I recently tried the chocolate frosted-raised donuts--so simple, yet so yummy. I always walk out feeling good about myself because I feel like I'm going to spend over $10 on a few donuts, then I'm told it's just $5. To top it off, I walk out with the best donuts I've ever had. It's a win-win situation. I've only gone in the morning, so be quick because they do run out of the fritters often! Ohlin's is one of three places anyone would bother going to Belmong for since it's unfortunately out of the way if you don't live near it.

I have been searching for great donuts lately, and I was in Belmont center; a place I have never ventured or knew existed until a few weeks ago. There are a lot stores, cafes, etc..., like a real downtown - surprising. There is a lot of parking on the street and people are darting in and out of stores, so it wasn't difficult to find a space. I wandered a bit to see what the town had and then headed into Ohlin's. Even from the outside the place appears to have been stuck in time - and as you enter it is clear that this bakery has not changed much since it opened. I am guessing that it has been around 40 years because of the decor, but it is just a guess. As you enter you are faced with several bakery counters and walls lined with breads and pastries. It is a small but manageable interior that allows 2-3 people to wander about, but any more than that and it would be a bit of a mess. I did notice that they make a good bit of bread, that looked like the stuff you would find at a grocery store bakery, and there are several pastries that look very old school, too. I was there for donuts so I discovered them in the case near the register and wasn't that excited - they appeared to be o.k. looking, so I was only going to order a single donut - so, I had to go with the honey dipped. They are a good size, because I like to enjoy donuts but not feel they are going to be the only thing I eat that morning. The donut did seem a little too soft, like some of the air had been let out - but if I wanted something sweet in the morning and I was in the center of town this would do the trick - especially since I believe it was .80 cents. Cannot beat that price. If you are looking to hop back in time and see where your parents or grandparents bought pastries and breads for the home check out ohlin's.

My grandmother used to go here and buy me gingerbread cookies the size of an adults hand with crazy colored frosting as "clothes" and either a plastic frosted on face or a sugar face I'd eat first. They were in plastic trays wrapped up in (you guessed it)....plastic cellophane. This place is STILL cranking these out. I don't want them anymore, but I love Ohlin's for nostalgic reasons. If you ever missed having a half and half (or black and white or whatever you want to call them) cookie, please go here and pick one up. It smells amazing as soon as you walk in, and the day old stuff is plentiful and just to the left. Things that are great are any lemon/raspberry pastry, cupcakes and aforementioned half/half cookies. Do not drink the coffee, iced coffee or eat blah looking cookies. Those are ONLY for the 99 year old people who are still going there! I love that they have a hand written sign saying "Teens wanted for help". It's a quaint place and been around a long long time.

This place smells like heaven. I finally went in after driving past it every day for the past two weeks on my new route to work. I always get caught at that light just long enough to stare and wonder what goodness they're baking. They've got breads, bagels, muffins, cookies, pastries and donuts (that was the intoxicating smell coming from the back). You'll experience sensory overload when you walk in to the small shop. I went with a cranberry muffin, which was smaller than most muffins but sized perfectly if you ask me. I don't need a huge muffin, especially when I just want a breakfast treat. I'm gonna stop back in the next few weeks to pick up Irish soda bread and pastries for a fantasy baseball draft and a tea party (talk about different ends of the spectrum). That Irish soda bread looks like something my grandmother would make.

I have been searching for the best doughnut place for a long time and finally found it here. wow, these are the best doughnuts I have ever had! they have a big assortment of both cake and yeast varieties, and are pretty cheap. hand cut, freshly made every day. haven't tried anything else yet because, frankly, why? the doughnuts RULE!!!!!! oh, and the lady behind the counter was helpful, friendly, as sweet as the stuff she sells! bring cash or your checkbook, this is a no credit card zone.

Definitely the best donuts I've had in Boston. I hear what Heather's saying about the pecan roll--I've had better. But the donuts are pretty perfect. Definitely worth the trip, even if you don't live in the area.

  • Larry P.

The donuts are exceptional. A friend told me about this place as I had recently moved to town. I tried it one day and ended up binging on donuts for like the next two months multiple times per week. They are that good. I have the weight gain to prove it!!! I have since skipped it.... though it is missed!!!! For your occasional donuts fix, it blows anything around out of the water that I have tried, especially the chocolate covered jelly donuts!!!

I went there this weekend, excited after hearing that this was THE PLACE for donuts. I was a little disappointed, as the selection was underwhelming and the woman seemed to be in a rush, even though we were the only customers in there. And I think there were like three things that interested me. But what I did have was delicious. (Maybe not the best, but definitely worth the trip if you're in a donut mood. And definitely worth the $.)

It is tough tough to walk by a neighborhood bakery without stopping in. This place is the exception for me. The cookies and turnovers that I purchased here were not the best quality. My experience, I have tried this place several times in the last year and.....this is hard to recomend to others. Service ; I have only been here while teenagers were working the counter. They are quick to get you want with a smile. This place does not leave you with the feeling that you are in a clean place. Sure it has been around for a while. But, that is no excuse for not keeping a tidy operation. The place needs a paint job and a facelift. It is sort of shocking to read some of the positive posts in here about Ohlin's Bakery. So, I am going to go in again and try some of the recomendations posted here.

I absolutely die for the ridiculously yummy doughnut cake and delicious fluffy snowflake rolls. This is the only cake in the world I will eat from now on. Spongy, soft cake and thick, sweet, out-of-this world frosting. Ohlin's is inexpensive, conveniently located, and always fresh. Ohlin's cake is so amazingly delicious, every bite is heaven! I'm obsessed.

S is for "Sickeningly sweet" U is for "U are gonna love it" G is for "Great kids' cakes" A is for "A pink cupcake and a blue cupcake, please." R is for "Are you going to Ohlin's to get a cake?" When you walk in this store, your toes do get a little tingly and a smile spreads across your face. There are counters and displays full of millions of different pastries and sweets, all for you to adopt and take home. If they make it home... We got a mini cupcake (which was about 75 cents and pretty comparable to the Kickass cupcake sizes...) and a Chocolate log with icing. En totale, we walked out spending $1.54, and it tasted a helluva lot better than other bakeries I've been to. It was very sweet, with the icing almost burning a sugar hole through my tongue, but that was fine. It had sprinkles, er, JIMMIES, so how can I really complain? The cake was moist, flavorful, and pleasant. The price is right at Ohlins. They're no Iron Chef of desserts, but they're just fine for a mom and pop bakery that's cheap, local, and friendly.

The bakers get into work in the wee hours of the morning so everything - and I mean EVERYTHING - is baked fresh for the day ahead. There are NO preservatives used in any of their products (I asked) therefore that is why it's all fresh that day (day old goes into... well.. 'day old' at a discount). The donuts are bar NONE the best in the Boston area - check out their past awards for Best of Boston. Cakes are moist and delicious and NOT sicky sweet. The bread is soft inside with warm crusty goodness outside. The selection of mini pastries will satisfy even the most discerning of party goer palettes and the cookies are just AWESOME! Have a praline (nutty good cookie swirled with chocolate) for me! For those who say it smells greasy - well DUH - it's a BAKERY people! For those of you who want a sterile store that imports their goods instead of baking them on premises... well I can recommend a good chain place you can visit instead!

My coworker raves about this bakery. I can only attest to the donuts she brings in and I am a donut fanatic. I have to say I find them just OK. I have been searching for that elusive old school honey dew donut from my childhood. We had a place in town that used to hand cut and glaze the donuts and they were huge and melted in your mouth. The shop is long gone but I still think about those donuts and I can not find a place of that quality. Ohlin's is doing it old school but just are not the dream I was hoping for.

Yes there is a Starbucks in Cushing Square - Yes Starbucks sells coffee and pastries, etc. But why would you go to the Cushing Square Starbucks when there is Ohlin's Bakery - open early - right across the street?! Ohlin's sells Green Mountain Coffee in a variety of flavors. They sell bagels, donuts, and all sorts of yummy breakfast goodies. The employees are young girls, really sweet, just looking to get you in and out the door, off to work on time. Bonus: Go and grab a box of Ohlin's bakery goodies when you're on your way to a friends house - they will think you're a hero.

You are not in danger of making this your morning stop for coffee, it sucks. However, the coconut donuts, and little donut things stuffed with custard and sprinkled with powdered sugar are a different story, these can become a bad, bad habit! Sure, some things are not the best, but the majority of baked goods I have gotten here have been quite yummy, and that and friendly service is good enough for me!

It's a hard call to rate this one...I mean it is definitely a matter of preference.... I love NY pizza and I hate Chicago Deep Dish Pizza... SO, if I don't like a good pizza place it should be a sign to the Chicago aficionado's to "run on down". Similarly, I like Viennese bakery fare, and French & Italian breads.... Butter, Buttah, did I say butter? and Cream and vanilla, and nuts and dark bitter chocolate and butter cream frosting and flaky strudel and flaky croissants and crispy crusts, and no colors besides beige, brown, and the one's from the perfect fruits in this category of products..... So, when I smell sugar and Not Butter!, or when I encounter: margarine, drizzled white glaze (think sticky cinnamon buns) recoiling buns, mushy bread, granular sugary frostings, hot pink or green cookies, sandy crunchy cookies, and the like I am reviled.... On the other hand, I have a friend who Loves This Place for nostalgic rather than gastronomic excellence. If you miss this kind of bakery, or love the things I detest in a bakery this is The Place; I also want the names of the bakeries, patisseries and boulangeries you detest!!!!!!

The reason to come here is for the donuts. Any of the yeast donuts are perfection. Honey dipped, jelly, buttercrunch...the cake donuts aren't bad either, but the yeast donuts are the best. The rest of the baked goods are mediocre at best. They do not use high quality ingredients. I'd be surprised if there is butter in anything, I'm guessing all shortening. But you aren't here for cakes, pies or cookies, you are here for DONUTS!

French Toast Bagels! Who does that? Handmade bagels fresh from the kitchen. Often you will be able to get something fresh out of the oven if you go during the first half of the day. They'll bring it out and ask you if you want to buy whatever the fresh baked thing is. Mmmm..doughnut, I mean bagel :)

  • Kathleen M.

Service is friendly , good, and prompt. Pastires are old-fashioned and good. This is one of the last of the old-time bakeries, it amazes me what can be done with different kinds of pastry dough. Flaky dough, donut dough, cake dough, pie dough, cookie dough. If you have a favorite breakfast pastry from your childhood you can find it here. If nothing else, come once and try a REAL donut, just like Grandma used to make at home. Coffee is affordable and does not have so much caffene that you will need to come back and spend another $2.00 in 3 hours. (For you Yuppies there is one of this kind of coffee shop down the street, and yes, the other place does have your favorite frozen and reheated apple thing)

I passed by this neighborhood bakery a thousand times, wondering whether I should venture in. Often, with these kinds of establishments, you walk in and the record player screeches to a halt while the encrusted regulars who have been sitting in the same seats since the Great Depression turn their hoary gave upon you and give you the once over. But after they won the Best of Boston award, it really made it easy to pop in, grab a bunch of donuts of every kind, and realize that I'd been passing the best overall donut shop in Boston. By best overall, I should say that I still like some donuts at DD, and I still think Betty Ann has the best donut in Boston (my favorite is the lemon, hot out of the oven), but if I had to pick a dozen donuts from any donut shop, it would have to be Ohlin's. Their dough is light and fluffy, while still having some weighty crustiness. There are many relics among donut shops in the Metro Boston area. I think most of them have been on the decline for decades...they need to join Hilltop Steakhouse and other legends in their own time and sing Springsteen's "Glory Days." But Ohlin's is not among them...this donut shop is still kicking it, big time!

  • Morgan W.

I tried Ohlin's Bakery this morning for the first time because they were on a boston.com list of the best doughnut shops around. I humbly concur with boston.com : Ohlin's has really terrific doughnuts that taste like they were actually made by a human and not a machine. Now I don't eat a lot of doughnuts, but I really liked these a whole lot better than a certain ubiquitous chain that is striving for world (or at least Boston area) domination. And the counter staff at Ohlin's were really very nice and clearly love their product. They kept trying to get me to try certain doughnuts. Go try Ohlin's for yourself.

Ohlin's is old school...a great place to stop on the way to mom and pop's. Prices are reasonable and the place has absolutely no pretenses. Offerings: bread pudding, giant apple turnovers (they call them flips), an assortment of italian cookies, breads. All packaged in bakery boxes tied up with string. Charming. 3 stars because I suspect the filling in yesterday's apple turnover was prepared off-site (industrial vat style). But the pastry was light, crackly, and generously sized. Yum. A cardamom loaf was light and sweet. Even better warmed in the oven the next morning. Take a pass on the chocolate chip cookies. Clearly not made with butter, and too crispy for my liking. Supermarket fare. Update: For you, dear reader, I returned to try Ohlin's coffee. Green Mountain it is, but of course, the final cup of coffee depends on its preparation, and I was underwhelmed. The selection was largely flavored coffees. I was left to try the decaf, and found it to be weak. It did taste, in a good way, of baked goods -- had that sweet, yeasty quality. But I won't be making Ohlin's my regular morning coffee stop.

Drove thirteen snowy miles to get a doughnut and it was worth it. We had read about this place and were tired of wasting calories at DD. Yummy. Definitely will go back. Best morning treats in MA after much searching.

  • Lois L.

Find Ohlin's to be very hit or miss. Excellent donuts, lemon cupcakes and lemon squares and hermits. Cookies are good and I have some tasty cupcakes. They make great cupcakes for kids with frosting animals and Muppets. Problem is sometimes you miss, had stale gingerbread and dried out muffins. They carry a wide variety of items and I don't think they move everything out the door at the same speed. The high school kids who work there are well trained and always smiling. Prices are very reasonable.

  • Antonio A.

I'm basing my review on the donuts. In short: best donuts ever. The maple donuts are to die for. The glazed and chocolate frosted donuts are perfect in every single way. And the prices are comparable to what you pay at Dunkin Donuts.

  • Joseph G.

I little gem of a bakery in Belmont!!! I especially like the glazed and jelly donuts. They are best fresh baked, but if for some reason you forget about the last one left in the box it tastes just as fresh as a midnight snack. Also, go in the morning when adults work, the afternoon teen parade is a little lacking.

    (4)
  • Kim M.

So I came to Ohlin's because it was my boyfriend's birthday and rather than get him a cake, I wanted to get him gourmet donuts - or at least ones that aren't from Dunkin. He can scarf down 3 of those in a sitting so why not give him something better? Plus, he'd been asking if there were any good donut shoppes near us. Lo and behold I used handy dandy Yelp to find Ohlin's! The bakery is adorable. It clearly must be good because I was there early but there was a line behind me. I bought a dozen donuts for Will and I had to get 4 more because **HEADS UP** there's a $10 minimum if you pay with card. The staff was really friendly and helpful; the woman who helped me let me know that the ones in the glass are not the only ones they have - check the ones stocked on the shelves behind them too! I am going to meet up with my boyfriend during my lunch break to surprise him with the donuts so a follow-up to come once he tries them out - but I have already had a honey-dipped one myself and it is AMAZEBALLS. Plus the texture of the donut itself is so perfectly light, soft, and fluffy. Definitely a must! Our next donut adventure is Linda's also in Belmont ... then we'll determine who's the real King/Queen of donuts!

    (5)
  • Phil C.

Well, if I'm going to try Linda's, I might as well try Ohlin's. Just not on the same day, as I gotta maintain that girlish figure. :-P The decor inside screams old school seventies-ish bakery. The service is generally friendly and patient, as they know you'll need some time to determine what you want. The donuts are their raison d'etre, so I went for a glazed just to start. it's soft and sugary, just what you'd want from that type of donut. The maple has got a nice maple syrup flavor to it, though I wouldn't have opposed having a slightly stronger maple. The next visit I had their lemon meringue, which okay, but not as favorable as the others. I just didn't think it worked for me, as I like a more pronounced lemon/tart flavor to my lemon donut. The meringue part neutralizes that. Also, the donut looks more like a sandwich, and you can imagine filling going all of your shirt if you're not careful.

  • Jiyea C.

I went on a dessert/carb spree in Belmont one day and one of my stops was this place. I came right after I tried a donut from Linda's down the street and was impressed with the varieties of donuts and cookies I could get here as opposed to the options I had at Linda's. We tried the blueberry old fashioned donut and the maple chocolate stripe donut and while I liked the consistency of both, I thought that the blueberry donut tasted..artificial. It did not really taste like blueberries, it tasted like sugar disguised to taste like blueberries. Still, super cheap (I'm used to Union Square donuts/ Blackbird donut prices) Note that this place is strictly a bakery take-out place. I do not believe there were any tables inside, though I may recall seeing a few outside. $5 min for credit cards.

These are my favorite donuts in Boston, and I like my donuts! Better than Union Square in my opinion, although they have more standard favors. You MUST try the buttercrunch (toasted coconut), and the regular honey dipped are pretty delicious, too!

Ohlin's Bakery is one of those fantastic local institutions that has been around forever because it makes an excellent product that has attracted a loyal following. I popped in here Christmas morning for a late morning snack and was pleasantly surprised to see a wide variety of baked goods and a sign in the door about them have the best donuts around. I am not big donut fan, but I figured that I had to buy one. I got a glazed donut and it was amazing. Definitely one of the best donuts I have ever eaten. I also got a half moon cookie / cake. The cake was fluffy and light as the icing was a thick layer of whipped chocolate and vanilla goodness. I also got a pack of Parker House rolls which were delicious and were well liked by my family.

  • Christine T.

This is a darn good donut both in the raised yeast and the old fashioned "cake" variety. Great price too, not jacked up like some "gourmet" or trendy donut spots. The bakery smells delicious however I've only been able to slowly work my way through their doe but selection and fritters. Everything is superb. Muffins etc will make the list eventually. They have everything including real bread(I think, I usually have donut vision when i go in). FYI bring cash, they have a ten dollar minimum on card payments. Or nvm if both your waistline and wallet can afford it, I personally think it's worth it.

    (5)
  • Carla S.

the regular glazed donut is incredible !!!! The jelly one is soooo good too. The other donuts I'm not so impressed with, but everything else is great. Been coming here for years and won't go to any commercial donut shop, yuck.

  • Justin P.

Love this place, a bit slow young high-school aged staff makes it lose a star but who am I kidding? I'll be back, they have some of the best donuts I've ever had in life and the conolis are not-a-bad either. Prices are reasonable for what you get, they could take it a little easy on the sugar on some of their chocolate crusted items but it's the U.S. so I may be barking up the wrong tree... Good work which is why people know where this little hole-in-the-wall is.

    (4)
  • M L.

Absolutely FANTASTIC cake donuts. Beautifully thick, glaze coated crust that peels away, and a fantastically moist cake center. The double chocolate frosted cake and blueberry cake are killer. Beat's Linda's 10,000 times over, and give's Verna's a total run for it's money. Go early because there are lines out the door starting at 9 AM, but it's worth it. This place is the real deal for old fashioned cake donuts.

Went to Ohlin's for the first time yesterday. Nice little place in a nice little town. Ordered a half dozen glazed and sugar raised. I'm a nut about sugar raised. These were incredibly light with good sugar coating. Perfect. The glazed were very good but not as good comparatively as the sugar raised

  • Ari P.

As I've worked in bakeries myself, I know the anatomy of a donut. I've also learned that my go-to tends to be more on the yeasty side but I can still appreciate Ohlin's. When I worked in Allston, Twin Donuts was my en-route breakfast, now that I work in Cambridge my route brushes up on Common Street. I was influenced by Boston A-List to try them, and I might even bump them up after sampling a few other places, even if for nothing other than Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles birthday cakes. 3 well-earned stars, given that I am probably biased when it comes to most American pastry.

Their donuts are fantastic! Fresh, no strange aftertaste like at Dunks, and the service is quick and friendly. A hidden gem in Belmont!

No complaints on this one! I bought 2 donuts and an iced coffee. The coffee was your basic Green Mountain so unfortunately you can only say so much about that. The donuts, however, were pretty good! The maple and chocolate drizzle was perfect. The Boston cream was pretty good. Instead of filled, it's cut and then the custard put it--just how I like it! Definitely will be back.

I like Ohlin's a lot. Mostly because it is NOT Dunkin' Donuts. What I've had: -Strawberry frosted honey donut- it's a honey dip with strawberry frosting. It's fine. -Chocolate chip croissant- good chocolate chips inside with a donut chocolate frosting on top (which should be eliminated). -Sugar cookie- very crunchy, on the verge of being old but still tastes good. -Chocolate with maple-glaze donut- YUM -Maple with chocolate-glaze donut- less YUM than the reverse donut mentioned above. -Maple muffin- tastes like what it sounds like. -Honey dip donut- YUM -Butter Crunch donut- kind of YUM My top favorites are the Honey Dip donut and the chocolate with maple-glaze donut. I've come here two weekends in a row and I plan to go next weekend too. It's not life-changing but it's good and nice.

Sunday mornings this place is PACKED. Which can be a downside, sure, but only puts on display the glory of these doughnuts! You honestly can't question why people stand in line for 10 min for one. Cheap and delicious, how could you get a better totally delectable unhealthy, sugar coated, carbohydrate breakfast?! Answer: you couldn't. Pro tip: the maple doughnut will change your life.

Buttercrunch donut. Enough said. Just go there, order one and be amazed. Ohlins also does a lot of other great treats. They made me a delicious red velvet cake one time which was fantastic. The staff is very friendly and they really hustle when it starts to get busy, which is most weekends.

I'm not a huge fan of doughnuts, but everyone at church raves about this place, so I just had to try it! Grabbed a half dozen ($6.99 after tax) for a group thing. We split all the doughnuts so everyone can try a bit of each... and ohhh myy they are good. My favorite is the maple with chocolate drizzle.. so.. much.. maple. The chocolate with maple drizzle is good, but not maple enough! The plain-looking honey is also amazing.. it's just so fluffy and flavorful compared to regular doughnuts.. I don't know how else to describe it. It's great. The coconut, buttercrunch, and raised chocolate are also very good. Get the maple doughnut. Just do it.

Best donuts in Boston, without question. I don't know about all the other pastry stuff they sell but all of their donuts are amazing. In particular, I recommend the maple glazed with chocolate. I've tried the majority of donut houses in Boston (at least the good ones) and I can confidently say that Ohlin's stands out way above all other places and at a MUCH lower cost (I have no idea how they keep the prices so low).

As far as donuts go, Ohlin's is probably top 100 in the country. I've never had anything else from Ohlin's because it's impossible to pass up on their donuts if you're buying from them. If you're from the area and looking for a good donut, Ohlin's is the place to go. I imagine the rest of their delicious-looking baked goods are just as good, though. Just a top choice for baked goods for birthday parties, regular parties, special breakfasts, regular breakfasts... you get the idea. However, be warned because parking in the area (Cushing Sq.) is. not. easy. But, it's totally worth it.

Okay so I keep hearing about the donuts and I can't say I've had them so this review is not based in the donuts. I was disappointed at the low selection. I pre-ordered a cake anyway. It was awful. Stale ad tasteless. So sad but even the good reviews can't convince me to try again
