Chicken Sag.... all day. I get it really hot with a garlic nan. One of the best Indian restaurants on this side of Boston!

The food here is pretty subpar. Plus the staff is just plain rude. I was really surprised to have that experience at a restaurant in a very friendly neighborhood. And for the quality, it was way too expensive. Will definitely not be coming back here. There are lots of other great Indian places around.

  • Sara P.

The food here is quite average, there are several far better options in the area (Punjab in Arlington and The Maharaja in Cambridge) but it's the atmosphere and service that warrant the low rating. We were the only customers on a Friday night. Our waiter did his job but absolutely nothing above that (no welcome or smile). The food came out very quickly making me wonder if it is simply re-heated and not made to order. For such a great real estate in Belmont, I wish this were a less depressing option.

Dear Kashish: You are SO lucky you hold a monopoly on good Indian food in the area. New Mother India in Waltham shut down (very sad!) so I am forced to rely on you again for my Palak paneer fix. As per my previous review: you are rude, you close way earlier than you advertise, and you frequently hang up on me. You also leave me standing awkwardly waiting for my food as you ignore me doing God knows what in your empty restaurant, although you know I am a loyal, very repeat customer. You get three reviews solely because your Peshawary naan warms my heart.

Wow, it really pains me to see the poor reviews that Kashish is getting. My experience here is vastly different. Kashish has been my go to place for Indian for the last 9 years and while I have tried other places in Boston Metro none compare as far as the quality of food goes and the reason is that Kashish uses noticably fresher spices than most places and they know how to balance flavors. I have eaten in and taken out. My take out experience has always been pleasant but perhaps it is because they know I love them and recognize my voice. The owner would deliver any order of $100 or more for me when I lived on Belmont Hill and they don't do delivery so that I thought was going above and beyond, They did have a Bangaldeshi man for a while and he was not as pleasant on the phone but in person he was very nice, maybe this is the guy the reviews are referencing, Service in house has always been good and courteous but again maybe because I am a know client? The food, which is why we go here, is just fantastic and so much better than anything else the area has to offer. The chicken Saag is the best I have ever tasted and their salmon tandoori is to die for. All my out of town guests get treated to the salmon and every single one, over 9 years mind, has flipped for it. The nan, potatoe, garlic, and plain are all very good. The samosas are good but I have had better elsewhere so I usually don't order them, but the lamb tikka masala, the cauliflower dish (I forget the name), the lamb vindaloo, and the house biryani are all absolutely delish and fresh. I hope that the folks at Kashish read these reviews and take on baord what yelpers are saying because I would hate to lose them and also more people deserve to try their delicious dishes without bad service. I will bring it up with the owner when I am next in, hopefully my food will still taste as good after I do so!!! Taking one for the yelping team :)

Terrible service. If you want to be rushed, shorted on food and then be told you can't order dessert with 30 minutes left before close, then look no further! The food does taste good, but the service was sadly something I've never experienced before at a restaurant. I won't be going back.

My family and I went to this for the second time. The first time a few weeks back they had a buffet, which we really enjoyed. This time it was menu only, and since we are not vegetarians we were a bit hesitant. It is pretty easy trying different dishes in a buffet, but a bit of a task for us who were not familiar with the menu. I have to say, once again, outstanding. Loved it. I wish kasish would advertise so the word could get out. MC.

I've been to Kashish a few times and I'm consistently impressed with the quality of the food. It's rich and always has just the right caliber of spicy heat appropriate to each dish. Quantities are likewise satisfying and I typically come home with leftovers. Their mango lassi is among my favorites in the area. Service has always been quick and polite, appropriate to the notion of letting the food do the talking rather than trying to sell you on a fun dining atmosphere. This is the kind of restaurant where you go to meet, eat, and be left to it. It's not much of an experience outside of an adventure for your taste buds. If you want that, it's great. If not, you will find the service and atmosphere lacking pizzazz. Not having the lunch buffet makes me sad; it's the best way to introduce someone to Indian food in my opinion. However, it works for the quasi-formal feel of the restaurant. And if the place doesn't jive with your sensibilities, order take out. It does not disappoint. Bottom line: It's an Indian restaurant before it's a cool place to hang out. Enjoy it for what it is and for what it isn't!

Ordered food for 12 people. Good food. Samosas were nicely done. Naan were well done, chicken Tikka was good, and saag paneer was nicely cooked too. I did takeout obviously, and needed extra serving containers- they were very accommodating, and gave us extras. They gave us plenty of chutneys- mint sauce, etc, for the food as accompaniment. I am still to experience the rude behavior I am reading about, but then I've not eaten in yet. The food for one didn't disappoint from the usual Indian fare.

Very disappointing. I should have gotten the hint when I walked into an empty restaurant. Their service was extremely poor. I requested the addition of potatoes to my meal and was told that they could not deviate whatsoever from what was on the menu. The waiter did not return to the table even once to ask if we needed anything. I noticed he ignored the only other customer as well. The next time they came to the table was to ask if we wanted the check. I would definitely not recommend. If you want a great Indian restaurant make the trip to Brookline and go to Rani. The best Indian cuisine ever! They will also modify any dish if you so desire.

North Indian fare isn't bad.. Then food is probably worth 3 stars but the service and ambience at this restaurant will never make me return here. Our server was rude & eccentric. He struggled to take our order and got us the bill even before we were done with dinner. Also I feel they tend to slow down their kitchen way before the advertised closing time. I will give this one a pass next time.

I called about 10 minutes before they opened: Me: Hi, can you please tell me if you have a lunch buffet? Idiot: Where are you calling from? Me: I'm in the area and want to know if you have a lunch buffet. Idiot: We have been here 12 years and have never had a lunch buffet. A simple no, we don't would have been the proper response. With his attitude, I find it hard to believe they managed this long.

Service is terrible. And once you do manage to order take out, the order is often totally wrong. Writing this review tonigh because I was put on hold several tims, then disconnected. The phone was answered by a young woman who didn't even announce the name of the restaurant. Leaving me wondering if I had the correct number. I was asked to hold several times, when I refused the last time I was told they were very busy. Strange because when we go in to the restaurant it is very often empty! Too bad, their food is usually fairly good. Bad service can ruin a place.

We've also been coming here for years. The food is excellent, definitely best Indian in the Boston area. The naan and chutneys are amazing. We are vegetarian - the chana masala and malai kofta are delicious! And if you ask for spicy, be prepared for spicy... (a big plus in my book!)

Tried Kashish for take out for the first time last night. I ordered lamb vindaloo and lamb curry with an order of garlic nahn. The only thing they got right was the nahn. I was concerned when I went in and no one was in there at 8:00 pm on a Thursday night. We were starving so we ate the food we got - which I think was chicken tiki masala and some chick peas in maybe a curry? It was all bland, with zero spice. This caused me to get on Yelp and see that several other people have made similar comments about their orders being wrong and the emptiness of the joint. Sad but true, I will not waste my time here again.

This place runs mostly on takeout, which explains their absolutely terrible service when you stay there to eat. It also explains why it's quite empty most of the time. The food is okay. They weren't able to take out any ingredients from any menu item. Nothing as simple as not adding carrots or not adding dairy. They use frozen vegetable mixes which isn't great. But honestly, I love Indian food so much, that that's not gonna stop me. Nothing here is outstanding and nothing is terrible except their service as I mentioned. When you eat here the waiter will be aloof, rude, impatient, and negligent. If you want Indian food in Belmont, I highly recommend just getting food for takeout.

We ordered chicken tikka masala and it was not too shabby, price was ok. About 15 bucks per dish on average for supper. The food is the reason for 3 stars. Service gets 1 star (if that). Our waiter was a real prick. No sense of humor and seemed grumpy about everything. He rushed us to take our orders, rushed us to pay, then asked us to leave at 8:55 because they closed at 9, and stood there til we actually left.

Hi, I just came back from lunch at Kashish with a party of six. Most decided to have one of the lunch specials. I choose the Lamb Masala Dosa which was good. We also had some samosas as appetizers. We found the food to be good, the service to good as well. Not sure where all the haters come from, but when I first visited the yelp site for Khashisk the review caused some concern. Seems like many people did not care for the food or the service. I found it a nice place to have lunch.

We got takeout from Kashish on 9/18/13. After reading some reviews on here, I was really second-guessing our choice, but it turned out to be pretty good. Not my favorite Indian place, but definitely not nearly as bad as some people on here said. Here are my thoughts: PROS: The order taker definitely wasn't rude on the phone when we called, but they weren't overly friendly either. I can see how if you were asking questions or not entirely sure what something was called, they might be a little short with you. But we didn't have that experience. The host in the restaurant when I went to pick up the food was very professional. No rudeness there at all. No problem using the credit card as one Yelper mentioned, and our order was exactly right including the vegetarian entrees. We both ordered medium spice, and they actually gave us a perfect medium spice. In fact, it was almost a bit on the hotter side, which we both loved. So they actually make the food spicy here. They gave the traditional 3 sauces for the samosas, including what my wife describes as the "best green sauce" she's ever had. The food was definitely good. Not the best, but good. CONS: Like another yelper mentioned, some of the veggies in the veggie korma were not the traditional Indian vegetables. (I forgot which ones she said, but things like squash, etc.) The veggie pakoras were just a tiny bit soggy. Not bad by any means, but not quite as crisp as I hoped for. They probably would have been better if we had eaten there instead of taking them home. All in all, I'll give this place a solid 4 stars based on our single takeout experience. I'll update this as we continue to eat there.

I have eaten at Kashish numerous times--our children have the tradition of a "last dinner" there before leaving town for college and work far away--but at our last visit, I realized that my focus on enjoying a meal with my family had blinded me a bit to the quality of the food and atmosphere. We arrived at 8:00 pm on a weekday and, although the sign on the door says that Kashish is open until 10:00, we were informed that the restaurant closes at 9:00. The waiter conveyed this message to our party with a tone that indicated that our appearance was an inconvenience to him and he'd prefer that we not bother to eat there. We persevered. It took about a half hour to have our orders taken and the food delivered, so there was no possibility of enjoying a leisurely meal. Except for the naan, which is delicious (hence, the two star rating), the food was not particularly well prepared. My entree of tandoori grilled vegetables was unevenly cooked and not very flavorful. There were only three other parties when we arrived and none by the time that we closed the place down.

Kashish is pretty awful. The food was unbelievably bland, even compared to American food. The biggest blunder was an unbelievable dense dosa that was not crispy. Deciding it needed to be more rich I asked for ghee and the server stated that they only had normal butter...

I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Kashish with a wide aray of spicy vindaloo dishes. The palate of spices here always pleases. They do go heavy on the spicy dishes but that is what many Indian food plates consist of. The curries are wonderful and the bread is soft, fresh and delish. My feeling is tha they stay close to the true Indian palate of spices and dishes and that seems to give an authentic vibe to the menu. Some people may not like the authenticness of the food but I enjoy it.

I am just done with this place. I don't want to brawl with waiter taking my phone order when ask the chutneys be included. Seriously? Does McDonald's fight you about ketchup? Its a condiment, not a winning lottery ticket. You do not need to protect it at all costs. Second, I order dinner and show up. The Waiter refuses to accept my credit card as they have a "mandatory minimum" to use a credit card. I am normally very nice about these sorts of signs as I know the independent store has to pay a percentage to the credit card company. The caveat is that in Mass, you can't have those rules. it is illegal and that if you accept credit cards, you accept credit cards. The waiter did not care and just pointed to the sign even after I told him. He would not get the manager and I did not have time for buffoonery. So I told him that he either accepts it or forget it. Again, passive aggressive waiter points to the sign. Okay, ciao. I start to leave and he goes into panic mode reminding me about my order. Because that is what happened, I suddenly forgot why I was there and was wandering off at random. Safe to say, I won't be going back.

We just had lunch here and I was sorely disappointed. I'm a bit of an Indian foodie as I cook it and have been to India many times. I've been here before and the food has been good. But today...I dunno what happened!? The muligatawny soup was watery and tasteless. I ordered the chicken tikka masala which was good but we also had the chapati which is the most traditional bread in India and it's whole wheat and roasted on a Tava. I always ordered chapati because any Indian worth his weight can make a decent chapati but this place makes it doughy and think. Yuck. It's a shame because this is the only Indian restaurant in the immediate area.

Food is mediocre. Service is beyond slow and just strange. They couldn't get my chicken vindaloo spicy, as requested, and it didn't really look like any vindaloo I've ever had. The sauce was an un-natural red color and tasted bland! there are far better places to get Indian food in the area (Cambridge). but I guess for Belmont this is all you get. won't be back.

Good price for lunch specials but the dishes aren't anything spectacular. Easy pickup from free parking, large bright dining room but uncomfortable chairs. Straightforward Indian food, consistent quality, good value at lunch.

My favorite Indian joint I've found outside of India itself. And I lived in Britain for 4 years! (I also lived in India for a year and have been back to visit) Is every dish perfect? No, I liked the dosas in India better than the dosas at Kashish... but they are still not bad at all. Their vegetable samosas make me want to kiss babies, they are so good! And as a vegetarian, I'm a big fan of all of their veg dishes. I can never pick a favorite because my favorite rotates regularly!

Standard Indian fare. But with South Indian in the mix, Kashish is worth seeking out (which isn't difficult, since it's the only Indian restaurant in Belmont Center....). Get the bhel - a nom-worthy start to the meal. They feature a basic assortment of dosa, and even an uttapam entree. Today, however, I kept it simple with a naanwich. Ever meet someone for lunch and decided to play nice and get what you'd think would be the most polite, easy-to-eat thing on the menu? Naanwiches are yummy little wraps stuffed with everything you'd find on a platter of tandoori chicken. Moist meat, onions, peppers, some raita. Ah, that last bit. After sucking on my fingers for the seventh time I said, "yeah, there's no polite way to eat this." Thankfully, my date has a penchant for being elbow-deep in BBQ sauce (my kind of people), so the raita-gaffe was forgiven. Still, my plate resembled a veggie- and foil- strewn carcass after the meal. But I digress. Like I said, standard Indian fare. But good! The waitstaff is a bit shy, but the place is clean, quiet, and the food is yummy. I've had the lunch curry specials, the tandoori chicken, naanwiches, and .. .OMG the shahi paneer.

Will NEVER go again. It is very EXPENSIVE and always empty, but the worst thing is the almost abusive attitude of the owners and staff. We had been somewhat regular customers, putting up with the bad aspects only because it was convenient. Never again will I set foot in that place. I don't typically wish people fail, but these guys are just bad people.

We went there from office as a group for lunch. This was my first time there. They have lunch sized dishes/portions for all the entrees they serve. Surprisingly for an Indian restaurant, they do not have a buffet. Anyways, I ordered Navaratan Korma and Naan. There portions were extremely small and tasteless. Looked like the dish was coming from someone's home. The Naan was tasteless - charred at several places and dry. There are several good restaurants in Cambridge that offer buffet food and lots of varieties much better than this seedy joint in Belmont.

Great food. Dick-ish service. Even ordering pickup, they honestly don't seem to care if you're there or not. It'd be more worth the price off they seemed to care.

Normally I really enjoy the food here, but the past two times they seem to have forgotten the Vindaloo in the Lamb Vindaloo, even after explicitly requesting it to be spicy. Maybe that was just my experience? But twice in a row is a pattern to me. On a brighter note, I tried the Navrattan Korma for the first time, and that was delicious.

I had lunch there. We ordered two dishes off their menu and their naan to go with it. The place was very empty around noon on a weekday which seemed strange. The food was fine. But in no way remarkable. The naan was OK. So we ate, were not hungry afterwards, and had indian food in our belly. But we felt no compelling reason to ever come back. The staff were nice to us and prompt that one time, so no complaints there.

I've always enjoyed the food at Kashish. However I got pretty grossed out the other night when we ordered a bunch of dishes to share including naan. The waiter brought us our naan. We did not notice but he brought us three big pieces (three orders instead of one.) He noticed a few minutes later and took the order away and returned with only one piece. The implication to me was that he was rescuing the other two pieces of naan for another order rather than comping us for the overage. How the heck does he know if we touched it, licked it or sneezed on it. I'm not sure I'll be going back. I did not want or need the extra naan but I sure as hell don't want someone's recycled food hitting my table.

Just came back from a fantastic first experience at Kashish. Food quality was top notch at every step from the invigorating lentil soup opener, to the fresh, tender, well spice balanced basmati rice, to the expertly made chicken tikka masala. I'm a big fan of Indian food and I have been looking for a good "go to" Indian restaurant for a while that is reasonably close to my workplace in Waltham. I tried all of the Moody street Indian restaurants with disappointing results until a friend mentioned Kashish in Belmont. As I have only been once, I cannot attest to the rest of the menu, but considering the service was good, lunch special was reasonably priced (~$8 with rice), and it had a cultured yet unpretentious atmosphere, I will be going back every week. Bottom line, if you crave Indian food in the area of Waltham/Belmont/Watertown, then Kashish will make you happy... Park in the lot directly behind, it's free. UPDATE: While their food quality is still good, their recent hike in prices suggests they are experiencing a downward spiral. Modest increases in menu price are perfectly understandable, but the hefty increase in their lunch special price now places this much lower on the quality to price rankings, and some of the Moody St Indian establishments may offer a better bang for the buck.

Had the worst dinner I've had in a very long time. We came in around 7 on a Friday, and found the place maybe about 1/4 full. Oddly instead of spacing folks out, all of the customers were packed side-by-side in the front of the place. We were seated immediately, but it took about 5 minutes for us to even get menus... and quite a while for us to get our order taken. I ordered the Seekh Kabab, and my wife ordered the Shakahari Grill (veggies cooked on skewers). And we decided to try the bread stuffed with spinach and cheese, because we'd never seen that before in any of the other Indian restaurants we'd been to. Despite not being all that crowded, we ended up waiting about half an hour for our food. Our entrees arrived one at a time, so we figured the bread would come out later... after about 5 minutes, we realized the bread wasn't coming, and decided we'd already waited long enough... if we asked them for the bread now, we'd finish our entrees way before they would manage to get the bread out to us. My Seekh kabab was OK, although a bit dry, and had little else on the plate besides the kababs. My wife's veggies looked nice on the outside, but were more or less raw inside. The rice was oddly land... most Indian restaurant's rice is nicely nutty. This was just... there. The sauces also didn't add much. So, we finish, and the bill comes out. We check, and yes, the bread was on the check. We flagged down the waitress after another 5 minutes of waiting and explain we never got the bread. She was apologetic, and went over to the head waiter or owner or whoever was in charge, and said "this table didn't get the bread they ordered." He immediately denied it, saying "I gave them bread!" She countered that she had bussed the table and there was no bread basket on the table. Still, he persisted in calling us liars (while standing right behind me, no less) until he finally gave in and told the waitress to go check in back where she had put the dishes and verify that there was no bread basket there. So, we had to wait even *longer* for the waitress to go back and check that there was no bread basket on the tray she'd used to bus our table. Eventually, she comes back, and tells him he was wrong. He just grunts and has her redo the bill. No apology on his part. Hint: if you're going to call a customer a liar (especially when your own waitress is telling you you're wrong), at least do it out of earshot of said customer. And if you do do in in earshot, then have the common decency to apologize to the customer afterwards. So, we got the corrected check, I slipped my credit card into the folder thing, and waited... and waited... and waited for the waitress to come back and get it. Finally, I dug around in my wallet and found I had enough cash to cover the bill. All told, we were there for about an hour and a half.

I'm not really an expert on Indian food (I always get chicken tikka masala-- my husband is a little more adventurous). The food here is good, so we're never disappointed, though the service can be a little on the slow side.

Went here last night for dinner with the boyfriend, because I was craving Indian something awful, and nothing else was going to do. The interior is romantic and welcoming--dim lights, dark wood. Even though the restaurant was only half full it did take a considerable amount of time for anyone to take our order--probably about 10 minutes of just waiting with menus closed. But the waiter was friendly and brought out our food quickly after we ordered. Generally, I order my chicken saag hot, because I know that invariably, if I order it medium, it will come mild, and I will be unhappy with the lack of spice. I don't know why, but I guess I look like someone who can't handle her spice (although I most certainly CAN!) Last night, I ordered my chicken saag hot, and guess what? It was HOT. Full of amazing spices that made my eyes water--in the best way. So props to the waiter/cook/whoever actually cooked my order the way I said I wanted it. I was impressed. Overall, the food was yummy, service was friendly, and prices were reasonable. Its definitely my new go-to "nice Indian dinner out" place.

We went to dinner at this restaurant last Saturday with our two friends. When we got there, there were only a few tables occupied and it was mostly empty. We got there around 8am. The Waiter seemed unhappy about our arrival and we were a bit of surprised but did not pay attention to that . The waiter came to our table and wanted to take orders with his stone face and there was no Hi. When we told him we needed a few more minutes and he was not happy. He showed terrible manners and very rude. Food is fine but we did not enjoy due to the very poor service. we are definitely not going back there.

This place is fantastic. When I lived in England, I got spoiled by the diversity of the Indian food available to me there, as there were so many different options. Kashish serves both North and South Indian cuisine, which is a big plus in my book. This is extra helpful when I have vegan friends over since they have more options. Their Roti is fanastic, as is their Poori, and little on this earth makes me as gastronomically happy as their Navratan Korma or their Malai Kofta. The staff is relatively friendly, they are willing to adjust the spiciness of your food according to taste, the ambiance is nice, and the prices are great for the quality of food you are receiving. I wish that they had a buffet because the food is so good, however the fact that they do not seems to speak to the fact that they are more interested in providing quality food vs. moving huge volumes of it. OH and of course, the Galub Jamum is fantastic. Like little balls of love floating in a sea of rosewater and honey. Also, their food holds up very well as take away, but it's a nice restaurant to eat at as well.

This was my first experience with "Kashish." As one would expect, the staff is quite laid-back and accommodating. The restaurant itself has a decent vibe - quite peaceful. Now for the food. The chicken vindaloo was red and tomato-based, whereas I'm accustomed to a yellow-ish tone. As for the heat? Almost no kick to it. There is a subtle tingling of the lips which creeps up, but it was nothing impressive. The aloo tiki is quality, as is the raita (yogurt, for you savages out there). The chutney was a purée. The mango bahar ice cream is exquisite.

We've been here twice and really enjoyed the food both times. The service is really bad, but if you go in with low expectations, you'll be able to enjoy the food. I highly recommend the chicken vindaloo and the naan.

A friendly place and a great choice for a family dinner if you and your kids like Indian food. My daughter chooses Kashish every year for her birthday. Great choices for kids: the lentil soup and the chicken tikka (which comes without sauce; the sauce is served on the side). The mango lhassi is delicious. The waiters are friendly and accommodating. The naan is wonderful. Since there are kids in my crowd, everything we order is mild -- and that's good for us -- but it means I can't comment on the reviews saying the spice is lacking when spice is called for.

Had the Lamb Tikka Marsala with garlic Naan. Very tasty. If you go in at 2:30 for lunch the place is very empty!

I have been here a dozen times, and I keep coming back. The food is fantastic. This is my favorite Indian food in Metro Boston. I love the Naans, Masala Dosa, Samosas, and everything else I have placed on my glutenous palate. This is a fabulous dining experience. The final straw for convincing me this was such an amazing restaurant has been the 2 Indian families I have taken hear. I have heard them bemoan every Indian restaurant they have been to. The closest they have come to enjoying the food that reminded them of home seemed elusive until I took them here. It is now their favorite restaurant in the Boston Area. If that was not convincing I don't know what could have been.

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD KASHISH HAS GOOD FOOD! Dear Kashish Chicken Tikka Masala, I want you! You taste so YUMMY. No other Chicken Tikka Masala compares to you. I love you, but I have ocassionally cheated w/ the Vindaloo. Forgive me. Even though eating you led to me gaining 15 pounds when I moved to Belmont, I will not stop. I will just work out more. Nothing can keep us apart! Forever yours, Fiona

Reliable, solid Indian food. I have been here twice- gotten chicken korma and sag paneer, along with naan and samosas. All have been great. The last time I was there the naan was a bit later than the rest of the meal, but only because it was just made fresh and arrived at the table piping hot & steaming.

Went again this past weekend with my sister. We got the Mixed Grill (Tandoori style). The portion was small and the food didn't have much flavor. The samosas were also salty and subpar compared to others I have tried at other establishments. The garlic naan was nowhere as good as their potato naan which I had tried previously. Just like my previous visit, service was painstakingly slow again. I do like that this place is near my house, but it's a shame that only some of their dishes are worthy of trying. It's not a good sign if one must only stick to staple dishes such as vindaloo and tikka masala!

My husband and I went here for dinner a little after 8:00 on a Saturday night, and were very surprised to be the only ones there. I know Belmont's a more family-oriented crowd, so 8:00 is a tad late, but we had some initial concerns that the lack of people had to do with a poor quality of food. Luckily, we were wrong! After we were seated, we were immediately given water, crispy bread and a caddy with three condiments to dip the bread in. The sauces were each delicious and balanced each other out, and I also love snacking as I peruse a large menu. They have a surprisingly nice wine selection, and a few large bottles of Indian beer. I had the house Cabernet Sauvignon, which was very good for an affordable wine, and my husband got a bottle of Taj Mahal beer. We got one order of garlic naan - which was huge, and more than enough for 2 people. My husband got the chicken tikka, which is his go-to dish at an Indian restaurant, and really enjoyed it. He especially liked the presentation, which was a sizzling plate of the chicken and veggies, probably because he's like a child and enjoys food that also makes noise. I got the lamb korma, and asked for it spicy. It was also delicious - not too hot, but that's fine because for people who really like to be in pain while eating can ask for extra spicy. The meat was super tender and well proportioned, though I would have liked a few more raisins. The service is fine, if you're in the mood for a relaxed dinner (which we very much were). I don't like to feel rushed while I'm eating a nice meal, and can't ever recall having an empty water glass so even though our waiter didn't visit excessivly, he was obviously attentive and just came at the right times. We were given a seat at the front window, which overlooks the main drag in Belmont Center. It was very pleasant to chat, and then people-watch the folks outside. The enjoyable atmosphere rounded out a thorougly nice date for us!

Hands down the worst restaurant experience I ever had. We went in a past 9.00 pm, which we knew was late, so asked if we would be seated. They said yes, and after we placed our order and about 5 mins after we got our food, we were asked to pay because they had to leave. And about 15 mins later, the waiter asks us to leave because he said the last bus is at 10 pm. They should have at least told us to do takeout if they were in such a rush. I don't appreciate a restaurant taking my money and then not letting me finish my meal. Now coming to the food - I ordered the Shakahari Grill (grilled vegetables) and I am not exaggerating when I say that I got exactly 2 quarters of zucchini, 1 baby eggplant, 1 thin sliver of green pepper, 1 floret of cauliflower, 1 floret of broccoli, and a ton of onion. Even Chipotle's grilled vegetable fajita has more vegetables! It was served with a super generic Tikka Masala sauce. My husband's Lamb dilrooba was OK, he said. Neither of us is going back, for sure!

Just moved to Belmont Center, and this place is a big contributor to the warm feeling I get about my new neighborhood. The dining room has a relaxed, classy feel to it, and the service is quite good. And the food!, Oh the food. High quality, authentic Indian with lots of excellent vegetarian options. Good nan too. They do take-out correctly as well, so you get enough rice, tamarind sauce and chutney. It's a tad on the pricey side, so not for everyday, but it's a super treat when you want to a step up in quality.

I took a chance on this place for a New Year's Eve dinner with friends, since I hadn't been here before. Fortunately, it worked out great. I called the day of for a reservation thinking I was going to get turned away and it wasn't a problem. It was also regular price and not some jacked up New Year's Eve ripoff like a lot of restaurants. The entrees are mostly under $15 and good portions. When we arrived, our table was ready and we were promptly seated although they weren't maxed out, so we could have walked in and got a seat. The decor is simple and tasteful, and they have nice lighting. We started with a sampler platter that had a mix of appetizers. I'm not a huge Indian appetizer fan to begin with, but I tried a few of the items. I would categorize it as a mixed bag, some good, some not so good. It was a lot of food and there was still a good amount left even after four of us had noshed. Next time I would skip the appetizer and save my appetite for more of the entree and naan. I was spoiled for choice with the variety of menu items which is usually not the case for a picky person like me. I got the chicken curry and asked for it to be very spicy. It was very spicy, but not so spicy that I couldn't enjoy it. Everything about it was delicious; the flavor and the texture of the sauce, the tenderness of the chicken, and it didn't have any "funky bits" in it. Being a proper Yelper, I had to try my friends' dishes so I could give a proper report. The shrimp korma and the chicken masala were both were super. In addition, the garlic naan was great as well as the chutney and sauces that we devoured and had to get refilled. The service was pretty good, but I wouldn't call it exceptional. Our server wasn't quite as attentive as he could have been, but my sense was that he lacked some experience more than anything else. My friend had asked about the ingredients of one of the appetizers to make sure there wasn't anything he was allergic to and the waiter said he would check. He never did, and we had to ask him again. He also didn't quite get that when there is an empty plate at a table, you should take it to make room for the next plate. However, he did get all of our orders right and the packed up our take-homes correctly. We were the last people to leave and although they were starting their prep for the next day, I didn't feel like they were pushing us out the door after we just spent a good bit of cash. I will be making this one of my neighborhood haunts when I'm looking for some spice and rice!

After reading the reviews on yelp, my family and I decided to give this one and try because we love indian cuisine. However, the only thing good about this restaurant is the open kitchen where you can watch the chef bake his breads. After taking our orders the servers completely ignored us and our food took forever to be delivered, which we knew were ready because we saw them being made. We then had to wait over half an hour for them to bring out our food. I expected the breads, being appetizers, to come out first but they came out with the rest of our food which defeats the point of ordering appetizers. And they didn't come to refill our waters until we had asked them to. The food itself was fine, nothing spectacular. I was disappointed in the level of spice because I had asked for spicy and instead got a sweet curry and the mint paratha that I ordered didn't have any mint flavor and didn't even smell of mint. And in the end they charged us an insane amount for tip. I wouldnt recommend this place at all. I know I'm never going back.

Hit Kashish on a Wed night for dinner with a few friends. I grew up eating Indian food, so I'm pretty particular about flavor. Unfortunately there are a lot of mediocre Indian restaurants in the Boston area and in my opinion, Kashish is one of them. It is a nice restaurant and they had a few good points, but our dinner entrees were bland and just okay, nothing impressive. We started with the mango lassi, which I will say is DELICIOUS! It was perfectly balanced sweet and tangy, not too thick, just the way I like it. YUM. Then we got the vegetable pakoras. These were actually really good too. So the meal started out pretty well. But then dinner came. My husband and I shared the chicken tikka masala (my absolute favorite dish, the dish by which I judge all Indian restuarants) and the palak paneer (another favorite of ours). They were really bland! The sauce on the chicken tasted and had the consistency of canned tomato sauce. The chicken was okay, but the sauce was very disappointing. The palak paneer was okay, too bland, but the paneer was too dense and tasted store bought. I was pretty disappointed. I can make both dishes better at home. The naan was okay, but I like mine fluffier and theirs was pretty chewy. It wasn't a cheap evening and I found myself regretting not going to my favorite Indian place in Woburn, but our friends didn't want to drive that far. Oh well! I might head back for lassi and appetizers, but not for dinner.

I have eaten here on many occasions and have never been dissapointed. The staff is courteous and food is delivered promptly and piping hot. Some of the tables are a bit of a tight sqeeze if you sit along the wall. The menu offers a good mix of regional dishes and standard curry dishes. The ambience is relaxing, though don't have an intimate private conversation here unless you don't mind other people listening. The acoustics are a bit odd in that voices really carry here.

I can't live somewhere without having a go-to Indian restaurant. Luckily, Kashish more than fits the bill. We only ate in the restaurant once, and it was nice, but we usually do take-out. They have the huge portions that I expect from an Indian place (I like to have dinner and then lunch the next day when I get Indian food), and their food is really delicious. I love the curries--not too liquidy, but not too dry. They are very good about adjusting the spice level (I love Indian food, but I have a weak palate and need it mildly spiced). I am usually torn between the Aloo Chole, Aloo Muttar, and Chicken Tikka Masala. It usually works out because the boyfriend gets the Tandoori chicken, which comes with tikka sauce for dipping--which he doesn't eat! Then I get my yummy vegetarian dish and a bowlful of tikka sauce that I eat with nan or rice. (Yes, the others who said that the tikka sauce here is amazing are right...I would usually never consider getting tikka masala for a meal, but the sauce here is so incredible that I need to have it!). The people here are friendly, and they always give you plenty of free basmati rice. The nan is a bit expensive, but each piece is so huge that usually we just order one and rip it in half, which makes it about equivalent to two normal sized orders of nan.

Ummm...yum!!! This is by far the best Indian restaurant I have found in the area. Everything we had was delicious. The atmosphere was nice, and we sat there enjoying for some time without being pressured to move. We ordered one appetiser (the chef's choice of breads, large), 4 meals (lamb curry, chicken tikka masala, chicken vendaloo, and tandori chicken), side of raita, side of mango chutney, and 2 22 oz beers all for $80. AND EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS! If you like Indian food, you MUST, I repeat MUST go to Kashish.

I ate lunch in Kashish in Belmont Center today, and the staff showed me to a table about 8 inches from other people. The restaurant was empty, with only 3 tables in use. Can I sit at another table further away? No, he says - that side of the restaurant is "closed." The "closed" section is about 3 feet away from the open section. We say again we want to sit somewhere else, so rather than let us eat in one of the 20 empty clean tables, he slowly cleans a dirty table and makes us wait. Why make people sit on top of each other when the restaurant is empty? I will never return to this place. Rude people.

  • Donna M.

I am always struggling here, because the food is very good (I would give it at least 4 stars, if not more), but the "atmosphere" is quite bad, i.e. the staff does not seem to understand the concept of using deodorant and washing their clothes. Since this can really cut into one's enjoyment of a meal, I have given it only 2 stars. Every once in a while I go back because of the good food, hoping the "atmosphere" has changed for the better. But so far it has not.

Any place that starts a meal with complimentary papadum gets an automatic stars in my book. That being said, this place was great. Waitstaff was lacking a little personality, and the spicy factor could have been cranked up a notch. We tried a vegetarian dish, a lamb dish, and some samosas. All we tasty and plentiful, and we carried a huge doggie bag home. The mango lassi was sweet and refreshing, and not too yogurt-y like some places get. It was a little pricey for Belmont, but I guess I would jack my prices up too... Since most people who were dining there were upper middle class. Made me feel like a that scene out of Pretty Woman.

I haven't been there in a month or so. My girlfriend and her friends went there a couple of weeks ago. I am shocked at this. One of the girls ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and it was terrible. The sauce was very watered down, so she sent it back. When it came back, it looks like they just added Ragu. Looked like tomato sauce. Will think about this before I go back.

  • Ilene F.

Even if I didn't live in Belmont I'd eat here. I've been here at least half a dozen times in as many months, and always find the service good and the food tasty. We did take out last time, and the portions are way generous. We were eating leftovers for days (and it always tastes better the next day anyway). We got my new favorite entree which is black lentils served in a gingery goo. Delectable. The vegetable pakoras managed to stay crispy on the ride home, and the naan was big enough to cover the table. My only gripe is that they give you tiny amounts of condiments on take out orders. I love that onion chutney stuff, and forgot to get extra, so I had to end up sharing. Belmont, come for the food, stay for the Mitt - chances are, he's not home!

  • Alla Z.

I went to this place because it had good reviews, but was really disappointed. Although its a nice restaurant with attentive staff, the food was just terrible. The samosas were tasteless, the sauce in all of our dishes was too thick and felt like porridge, and they completely got the spice levels wrong. Mine was too spicy, my husband's was bland, and my friend (who ordered hot) barely got a medium. Plus it was really pricey for the portions. I will not be going back.

5 stars because I truly can't imagine Indian food getting any better than this. It's just so tasty! My usual order is the aloo naan (stuff with curried potato, yum), and the chicken korma. They are both to die for. The naan is perfectly textured and so delicious that I could eat it by itself, and the korma is just the right mix of creamy/nutty/spicy. People I've eaten here with several different times have commented on the quality of meat that's used in all the dishes, also. Given the taste, the price is not bad--my boyfriend and I usually do aloo naan, chicken korma, and chicken vindaloo for takeout and it's $30.

Not as good as Punjab in Arlington, but very close. They have a very good menu and are very willing to make any additions or subtractions to any dish you'd like. They are very friendly and have a nice restaurant, but you can just walk in off the street and have a casual meal, or come out for a romantic date. Fast service, quick turn around, and take out, out no delivery :(. You can take the T or there is parking on the street, or a lot in the back. Reasonable to good prices and an over all two thumbs up!

This is my favorite restaurant. I've been here about 15 times, and each time I go into this beautiful nirvana-like food trance. I think they might slip some hash into the curries. Good things to order: Chicken/whatever you like Korma, Saag, Tikka Masala + Raita and Naan. The Gewurtz-Tremainer tastes really good with the food, highly recommended. The decor is really beautiful. There is a nice golden glowy light in the place that adds to the ambience. There is also this lovely food-perfume smell which hits you when you walk in. Great place!

Been here twice (so far) and loved it both times, once dining in and once for take-out. We called ahead for the take-out and it was ready when we arrived. Excellent, fast service, with excellent food. Nice decor inside with an interesting view of the cooking area.

Really solid Indian food in the suburbs. I prefer Khusboo in Lexington, which is owned by the same people, but the food here is almost as good and the service is great. I haven't been in a couple of years, but i used to go here with an ex sometimes and we always enjoyed our food. I got their vindaloo a lot, nice and spicy.

Kashish is my first try with indian food, I had my friend order for me and everything was perfect. The kashish combo platter was probably some of the coolest looking apetizers I've ever seen and they were all delicious especially the big fried I dont know mashed potato curry ball?. Tried both chicken tiki masala and chicken vindaloo, both were great entrees for someone who was a little hesitant to try indian food, but now I'm over the fear and have seen the light.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about... The food here was average, the service was mediocre, and the atmosphere was very plain. Don't get a booth table, because the booth seats are only about 12 inches deep, so you keep sliding out of them. The vindaloo also tastes like marinara.

  • S B.

This place has great food! I always get chicken tikka masala, and this one was one of the best i've tried. The naan is also high-quality. It has a nice environment - quiet and dim lighting. Parking is usually ok - there's a lot in the back that's free at night. As an added bonus, it's right near TCBY for desesrt!

  • Ebenezer S.

I don't understand the glowing reviews. The chicken tikka masala was too chewy. The malai kofta felt like it had just been unfrozen. The Bhel Puri appetizer was excellent though. Service was fine. All in all just OK.

  • Jo B.

Good place, it definitely earns a solid 4 stars. The atmosphere is nice - good if you're going on a casual date or out with friends. It's not too loud or too quiet; mellow Indian music playing in the background adds to the experience. The food was, for the most part, very good. I got addicted to the free appetizer and dipping sauces and had to order more of it. I could have just eaten that with my white wine, but I don't think that would've been too healthy. So I sampled a variety of things including the shrimp chaat, lamb masala dosa, and the mixed tandoori grill. I've had these items before at other places and Kashish was above average. The only thing I would improve upon is that the tandoori items were a little bit overcooked and dried out. I definitely recommend this place though and look forward to trying more items.

  • Robert Z.

Indian cuisine in Boston usually means a mediocre buffet served up in a lavishly decorated storefront for a rock-bottom price. Kashish breaks away from this mold, delivering reasonable servings of classic Indian dishes like Chicken Tikka Masala and Saag Paneer, along with some more creative items like naan-wiches (I'm not kidding). Although the prices are at the high end for neighborhood Indian cuisine, Kashish has become our #1 take-out option in Belmont.

Great for an easy, quick Indian meal. Kind of a surprise for Belmont, this place is one that I'm hoping will be around for a while (but there's rarely more than 3 or 4 tables seated when I'm there, even on a Friday evening). Very good naan, and the red curry & tikka marsals are up there for my favorites. Very good prices, and they even have a small bar. Definitely worth a try.

I've gotten take-out from here a couple of times, and the food is delicious. I like the fact that they automatically give bread with the take-out. Definately a place I will return to.

Um, they have Naan Sammiches. Yes, lunchtime naan sammiches. It's crazy. I haven't had one yet, but I will soon and report back. Aside from the revolutionary naan sammich, food is good all around. They have a window by the tandoor oven so you can see them cooking pulling out long skewers of chicken, which is always fun. No buffet. Linen napkins.

"Kashish in Hindi means attraction and an indescribable desire for the finest pleasures in life." I copied that from a Globe article that prompted me to try out Kashish... and I'm glad I gave it a shot. This Indian food is wonderful... full of flavor. The chef greets you and encourages you to try things you may not have tried before. You can watch your food being cooked on the tandoor through windows. The Naan is hot and fresh and yummy.

One of Best in Boston for Nothern Indian Cusine together with Flagship restaurant Kushboo in lexington. It has no Buffet which is good since it servce quality food. Down the street from my house. Decent Wait staff who will take your order and will try to customize and make it really spicy if you like( I learnt the hard way). They provide papadums just like chips in Mexican restaurant. They also have dosas which aren't bad. I would highly recommend it. Please make resevations if you go there for dinner during weekend.

I went there on a very cold night and we were seated right away near the store window. I ordered Channa Paneer (chick peas with cheese cubes) that tasted very good but was way too spicy hot for having requested mild. It gave me terrible heartburn, too! My friend ordered lamb saag which he said was delicious, but also hotter than mild. The breads we ordered were very good, and rice came with our meal without extra charge. Service was attentive and friendly. By the end of the meal, the cold streaming from the window was so unbearable that we left sooner than we had anticipated. If I ever go back, I will impress on the wait staff the need to understand what "mild" means, and return my plate if they don't comply. There was a constant stream of customers picking up take-out, so they're doing something right! UPDATE! Returned many times since my review, and the food was delish and came exactly as ordered in terms of spiciness!

My wife and I were strolling down the street in Belmont and decided Indian sounded good for lunch. Boy, was it. We had the veggie appetizers, which were not too greasy and not too salty (common problems with other places), 2 lunch specials, and some naan. The chicken tikka masala (my wife's Indian food yardstick) was quite tasty, and you could actually tell that the chicken was cooked in the tandoor. I had the lamb saag, which was great. We have been missing Punjab Cafe in Quincy since we moved up to Cambridge, but I think that this place is actually better. We're looking forward to trying more of their menu.

This place is pretty delish. We ordered takeout and sampled about 6 dishes. All were very tasty and well prepared. Of particular note, the Chicken Tikka Masala, Naan, and Lamb Vindaloo were all around hits. Am looking forward to coming back and trying out others on the menu.

I love Kashish because it has great courteous staff that immediately greet you as you walk through either door and then immediately take your order. You can expect about 10-15 minute wait for take-out but it is well worth it. I usually get their naan, vindaloo, and tikka marsala. The food is consistently good and fresh and enjoyable. I like and dislike at times the fact that it is not your typical ethnic restaurant with buffet style dining. It is nice to be able to go into a good restaurant and have a relaxing dinner or lunch with your guest(s) and be able to enjoy a relaxing meal with great conversation that can actually be heard. Their staff is also very good about letting you have the space you want but be attentive enough to let you know they've not forgotten you. Sometimes, it is a toss up between going to Kashish and Patou because both are equally as delicious for their own specific cuisines and ethnic experiences.

Kashish is a great little place in Belmont for a quiet Indian meal. The food is good - the waitstaff is a little standoff-ish, but Im not going to count this against them, because the waitstaff has been this way at every Indian place Ive gone to - and Ive gone to many. Yummy saag and great onion chutney if you like that sort of thing.

A former Belmont resident, I now live in Los Angeles and have tried in vain to find an Indian Restaurant that compares to Kashish. I've found even better stuff in London, but that's kind of a given. My family often pines after Kashish... when I'm in town this summer you know that's the first place I'm going. Like "hey, brother! Thanks for picking me up at the airport. Ya hungry?"

some really fantastic indian food, and right down the street from my place (you really can't beat walking distance naan!). great menu, reasonably priced, good lunch specials (naan sammiches, it's true!), and their samosas are better than punjab's (and that's really all that matters). we haven't eaten there yet, but we always pop in to get our take-out order, and the atmosphere is great. whoever is manning the front is always super friendly, too.

The chicken tikka masala is the best I've found, and my wife loves their chicken korma (she orders it with white meat). The naan bread is also excellent. And the masala dosa is fantastic. The service is a bit slow and the atmosphere isn't great, but it's phenomenal for take-out and for lunch.

Kashish is a nice little Indian restaurant in Belmont center. I had lunch there with a friend. I ordered shrimp curry and my friend ordered chicken curry. We both enjoyed our dishes which were prepared to our liking... not too spicy. The one problem I had was when I ordered Darjeeling tea. I had asked for Darjeeling tea without milk and sugar. When it came, I asked for a pot of hot water because my friend and I found the tea too strong. The waiter brought me a cup with hot water in it. I asked for a refill of the Darjeeling tea. This time the tea wasn't as strong. When my bill came, I noticed I had been charged for two cups of Darjeeling tea and also for a cup of hot water. I asked to see the manager who explained that there is no charge for a second cup of regular tea, but there is a charge for a second cup of Darjeeling tea. The manager also said there was a charge of one dollar for a cup of hot water. When I explained I didn't realize I would be charged for a second cup of tea and I asked for hot water because the tea was too strong, the manager deducted the extra charges. So, if you order Darjeeling tea and want a refill, you will be charged for a second cup and if you order hot water, you will be charged for that as well. Because the meal was tasty and fresh and since the manager explained the additional charges and then deducted them because I was unaware of their policy, I will go back and would recommend eating there.
