Everyone loves your sign, but Metacomet Cafe, you need to get your !@#$% together. I suspect you will be out of business in a year. The catchy signage inside is already a problem--how many sizes of font are we looking at and why? Who made these choices and why? It seems to be trying to be hip, but it's not practical or user-friendly. Though they'd been open for over a month when I first visited, they had no salt available on the tables and after much scrambling, brought the giant shaker from the kitchen. Open for 2 months and they informed us they only had one bun left. Ran out of buns. In a hamburger joint. Yes, buns. We've seen workers leave the restaurant (through the front door, why?) and come back with cartons of seltzer cans. Yes, they seem unable to keep their kitchen stocked. Very sad yet comical. This place is run chaotically and inconsistently. The eager and friendly college students behind the counter are often perplexed and don't seem to know what is going on, likely because the owner has no idea how to run a restaurant. Decor is sketchy. Why are the walls so bare, esp in a small arts town? Why is there only one booth and the rest of the place has table and chairs? I have no idea and I'm sure the owner doesn't either. What is with the ketchup? Why must I try to negotiate ketchup out of a giant, metal tub from under a plastic hood? And there's barely any ketchup in the tub? It's a mess. Please tell them to put the following on each table: salt and pepper ketchup napkins Metacomet has a very strange menu, but rather than being charmingly quirky, I find it annoying. It is FOOD, not edible art. Someone who devised the menu is confused methinks. Confused that people will flock to an idiosyncratic restaurant simply because it's idiosyncratic, but will someone tell the person in charge that the public is hungrier and smarter than that? The burgers are good, but nothing special and you can't order them at the temp you want. At least at Local Burger in Noho, you get 2 choices. The burgers here are probably too thin to cook any less than medium to medium well. The fries are like those shoestring potatoes my mom used to buy me in a can. So why don't I just go to the Stop and Shop and see if they still sell them, in a can. In a can. They are like fries from a can and very hard to dip into ketchup. Much of what I've tried has been strangely flavorless. Metacomet Cafe, you have the best sign in town, but we waited 2 years for this? Ugh.

Great view- strong coffee from Esselon- the green chile burger was very good. Good homemade chips though a few more would have been appreciated.

Really good burger and shake, if a bit pricey. Inside just like the American cafe of memory. Recommended, for sure.

Good but needs improvement! Went here for dinner the other night with a friend. The burger choices were very creative and it was hard to choose which one I wanted to try. The Cafe also has the option to create your own burger for $7.99 with unlimited toppings (i.e. bacon, avocado, mushrooms, sprouts and more). I decided to try the Metacomet Burger but will take advantage of the create your own option next time. After I ordered my burger, I was not asked how I wanted my burger cooked so I asked the counter person if I could request my burger how I wanted. She responded that they only cook the burgers one way--well done. I thought this was very weird, as it is a place that specializes in burgers. Not too happy since I am a fan of the medium rare/medium burg. Anyway, got the homemade soda (pretty good), my friend got a vanilla milkshake (pretty bad) and we both got the potato leek soup (very good and refreshing!). The burgers came out rather quickly (less than 10 min) but the fries didn't come out until 10 minutes after the burger. The burger was quite good but the bun was too small for the burg and it was quite soggy. I think this joint could step of their game and start toasting the buns. Overall, I would definitely give this place a try! The funky burgs are good but would be better if I could order them cooked to my liking!!

While the Metacomet Cafe is clearly still in the process of figuring out their menu and decorating their space, I love everything they're currently doing!! I disagree with Igor's review; the food isn't 'trying to be different,' it's a gourmet (and affordable!!) spin on the traditional burgers and fries. The burgers are amazing, and I love that they're all priced the same. The veggie burger patties are probably the best I've ever had (and I spent 18 years as a vegetarian). The shoestring fries are great; perfect amount of crispiness, nicely salty and well spiced. I also LOVE the soups (the gazpacho has the perfect amount of bite!). I'm excited to see what they'll add to the menu as they expand it, and in the meantime, I'll definitely come back again for what I've already eaten.

The food tastes fresh and delicious. I have had the onion burger, the bleu burger, the gazpacho, and the Swedish meatballs. All of these were great. I was pleasantly surprised by capers on the bleu burger and dill in the gazpacho. Their dishes are interesting and unique yet simple. The staff are very friendly. The only thing I didn't really like were the fries. They were very thin and long - so heat retention was sub-optimal and they sort of tangle together. Thicker fries, possibly included with the burgers would be an improvement.

Oddball menu. Burgers. Shoestring fries. Meatballs. Cold cod. Bluefish cakes. My dining companions all enjoyed their grass fed (juicy!) burgers and fries. I had the bluefish cakes and really liked them. Served with tasty roasted/stewed plum tomatos and watercress/romaine salad. Odd but Mmmm. I'll be back.

Grass-fed, delicious, unique. The first is an ethical requirement, the second is a good business decision, and the third is what makes it stand out from the rest. There are plenty of places you can get a burger, but their offerings, like another reviewer said, are different from what you can find at High Horse, ABC, or otherwise. For now, I'm enjoying the lack of a crowd as is typical in summer for downtown Amherst.

I really don't know what to think of this place. I really want to like it but there are so many things that prevent me from doing so fully. I will start off with the things I like: the menu is simple and customizable to your tastes and The decor is adorable and the restaurant was very clean. The counter attendants were very nice and sweet as well. Now the things I don't quite get: Fishing ketchup out of a giant tub with a dime sized ladle - unsanitary and awkward. In fact the whole area where the condiments are was just not clean nor was it well stocked. No salt and pepper or napkins on the table. The fries were so thin you couldn't dip them in any condiments and the onions on top of them seemed random and did nothing to compliment since they fell to the plate as you tried to eat them. The burger was average, and the bun was soft. However everything was just a bit greasy. Again, I want to like the place... If they could cut the fries thicker, clean up the condiment area and make less greasy food I would be willing to try Metacomet again.

There are many burgers in the Valley, most in the big, sloppy, medium-rare style that dribbles juice everywhere when you take a bite. These are something different: thinner, compressed, diner-style patties that let the creative toppings shine. We had the Metacomet and Onion burgers. Both were terrific, served on potato buns with generous toppings. The fries are polarizing: they are cut extremely fine, finer than shoestring fries, and while very nicely seasone d are a bit of a trick to eat. They might consider adding a slightly thicker version for traditionalists and children. Beverages are a serious weak point. There is an eccentric assortment of Mexican coke and Sprite (hipster rules: no corn syrup, no diet drinks), a homemade spiced ginger beer that was interesting but would have benefitted from a much stronger hit of citrus, and iced coffee. At a minimum, they need to add a couple of unsweetened iced teas (one caffeinated, one not) or up their housemade soda game--and set out a pitcher of water. A beer and wine license would be nice, but i suspect they agree. Waitstaff were friendly and prompt. After months (years? Yay, Town of Amherst, business-friendly as always) they are finally open, and despite a few newbie bumps in the road, i hope they find their customer base. They definitely deserve a try---and really, people, if you judge a restaurant by its font choice, i dont know what to say about your priorities.

Amherst needed a burger joint like this. We have White Hut for ye olde Classic Burger and High Horse for a "'higher end', looser wallet" feel. Metacomet offers something right in the middle. While the vibe of their establishment is modern hipster in appearance (light wood tables, changeable letterboard, plants at the window...), their staff are kind and warm. I asked if I could get a couple things switched around on their Metacomet burger and they did not appear put off in the slightest. Customization is - truly - what they are aiming for, and it's paying off. They have plenty of options for customizing (I decided to add avocado, which is a rarity to find on Valley menus) and all of their ingredients were fresh and delicious. Their sauces all looked very interesting and each sounds like a great compliment to a burger. My only complaint is that the burgers do not come with fries, and their fries are wimpy. If they step up their fried potato game, this will definitely be a regular spot on my radar.

I went here with a friend and I was very nicely surprised with the burgers. The place has a small but solid (and even adventurous) selection that should please any burger-lover. The thin fries are abundant and crispy. The cold soup they offer (gazpacho, leek and potato) is only OK (they are a little on the bland side). But, the burgers are great! The atmosphere is clean, relaxed, and the service was very good too. It is a great option right on downtoen Amherst.

Great burger joint with friendly helpful staff. Had the Green chili burger, fries and a coffee float. Burger was nicely cooked and the fries, which are a la carte, came heaped up on a plate. Definitely enough for two. Coffee float was great. We came back the next day and I had the make-your-own burger and the homemade soda. This is a unique little place that's got a nice vibe. I saw a negative review from Katherine G. I'd cut them a little slack. It's just getting up and running so visit in another month or two. I'm sure they'll have ironed out some of the things you've pointed out.

Tries too hard to be different. They have a very limited menu with fancy sounding names on all their burgers. Way too many onions on everything. The french fries were shoestring and too small for my taste. Over priced and the markup seems to buy you pretentiousness.
