Nice atmosphere with *GREAT* food prepared by a gold-medal winning chef! I've eaten here any number of times over the past twenty years or so, with the most recent being just a few weeks ago. I decided that it was time to write a quick review to share my experiences with others. In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that the chef/owner is my cousin, but I was a fan of this place long before he ever worked here or owned it. This restaurant is true to its name... the building is an old warehouse on the bank of the bayou in Washington which was used to store goods carried by steamboats during the 1800's. It's been tastefully restored and features lots of historical pictures, documents, and objects. The food is pretty much what you might expect in South Louisiana... heavily influenced by the Cajun culture with seafood being the featured player. That being said, Chef Jason Huguet has put his own mark on the menu with many of the dishes being gold medal winners over the past several years. The gumbo is dark, thick, and rich. (remember, folks, this is *Cajun* cooking. Celery is best used to stir a Bloody Mary, not put in a gumbo.) The French Onion soup is also thick, rich, and tasty. Like so many other dishes, it's a gold medal winner and well, well worth your time. The crab cakes, yet another gold medal winner, are incredibly tasty. Why? They feature crab, not "fillers". Lightly fried, this is a dish not to be missed. My Mom's favorite is the soft shell crab. It's a shame that fresh crab are only available seasonally because it's truly a tasty dish. I've read a few reviews complaining about the prices. I don't find them to be particularly high when compared to other local restaurants specializing in seafood. No matter what seafood dish you have here, you'll notice the flavor is beyond what you might expect. All seafood is fresh, period. They simply don't use frozen products. I've had the chef tell me that he'd rather not have something on his menu rather than serve up inferior dishes. Fresh seafood all the time? That's good enough for me... and definitely worth it. The service has always been good. The atmosphere is casual, relaxed, and perhaps even charming. Combined with the excellent food, you're going to have a nice evening out at the Steamboat Warehouse Restaurant.

Great decor but flavor has gone down. Not what it used to be. They may have won an award for Crawfish Etouffee but they don't serve it at the restaurant. The Etoufee served is below average at best.

An award winning restaurant set in a building built in 1819. The chef has won many awards over the years, voted 'Best Chef' in the Daily Worlds yearly 'Best of' contest for the last 10 years. He was also awarded the Louisiana Restaurant Associations highest honor, the Restauranteur of the Year in 2012. Come & join us & form your own opinion about our unique atmosphere & cuisine. The location of the Steamboat can't be beat--an old cotton warehouse on Bayou Courtableau. However, the food was such a disappointment. The seafood au gratin had such a terrible fishy flavor that it was inedible. I don't know if it was raw or just old. When the waitress was told about this, no alternative was given and I was charged full price. My husband had the flounder with crabmeat and it was just ok. The coffee was cold. Dessert was very good, very small, and very expensive. We were particularly sorry because we have been eating here for over 30 years ever since we were dating and I had heard good things about the chef recently. I hope there are improvements soon.

Shout out to Yelp for helping us find just an incredible restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Steamboat warehouse is just off I-49 in Washington LA. We were on a road trip from Pensacola FL and returning home to Texas. The price points seemed a little steep at first but was no concern after the meals started to arrive. The atmosphere is timeless the service was tops. We had a mixed group of two families. The menu satisfied all. I had stuffed flounder, which was the best flounder I have ever eaten. Tried escargot and it was super. We have marked this place in the GPS for our future road trips. Do not pass this place by! Make it a destination.

I was going to take a photo but before I realize, my plate is empty and happy. It took a bit of time before food is out but the flavor is irresistible. Thanks yelp we find this place and we love it.

Went to this restaurant while in the area on business. We are from New York so you know that we can be very picky. This restaurant was fabulous!!! Starting with the decor. It really looks like an old wooden warehouse. I know that's not for everyone but we liked it. Waitress was very pleasant and attentive. Patiently described the food items we asked about. The food. OMG DELISH with a capital D. I had an unbelievable appetizer. Jumbo shrimp stuffed with oyster, wrapped in bacon and fried. Enough said. Main course was a Seafood Casserole. Best I ever had. Returning to the area in August for business. First dinner will be here

I lived nearby (in Opelousas) for a couple years and this was my FAVORITE restaurant in Acadiana. GREAT atmosphere - it is literally an old steamboat warehouse that backs to a bayou. You can enjoy great cocktails out back on the bayou and relax before dining. They have a great bar and even grow fresh mint for the mojitos. The food is AMAZING. Always flavor-ful, great presentation. I love good food of all types, but if you like cajun food done traditionally but with flare, this is the spot for you.

We dined there on a Saturday night. This was a throwback to my youth as it was our regular Saturday night spot for family dinners back in the mid-late 1980's. I wanted to revisit for nostalgia's sake. It didn't disappoint. As we entered the very busy restaurant and headed to the bar for a beer while we waited for our food, we commented on how busy they were. A patron replied that this is the only restaurant in a 40 mile radius and I think it's true. The hostess estimated our wait time to be around 20 minutes, but it was more like 40-45. We were grumbling as we waited for a table and noticed that many of the patrons were regulars and seemed to get preferential service/treatment. After a longer than anticipated wait, we were seated at a table by the door. Our server took her time in greeting us - she was working hard, but also spent a great deal of time socializing with the patrons (she knew them) at the table next to us - catching up on the local news/gossip. It was frustrating, but the food was delicious. After the table next to us left, our service began to improve. I also found a signature of my father's left in 1985 when we dined there with him - it was on the table where we were seated. Truly, a very unique and unexpected treasure to find. The gumbo is delicious, you must try it! I had the seafood au gratin and found it tasty. I used to love their "paddlewheel potatoes" (mashed potatoes with sausage) and they still have a variation on those. I found them to be flavorless aside from the sausage. They could use some improvement and they would be out of this world. The carrots (the vegetable that came as a default side) were doused in honey. A great thing if you want to convince your kids to eat their veggies. I don't need that much sugar on top of my carrots, but I appreciate the effort. They were tasty. My husband had a steak (ribeye) and wasn't all that impressed, but we're spoiled when it comes to steaks (we have a fantastic steakhouse very near our house that we visit often). Tip: ask to sub the gumbo for the salad - there's a slight upcharge, but well worth it!

After hearing great things about the Steamboat, we decided to try it. It is located in the town of Washington on the banks of Bayou Courtableaund and not far off of of I-49. Pretty interesting history you can read about in the menu. We arrived and were seated immediately. The restaurant was not crowded. Service was ok, not the fastest. We started with the Stuffed Jalapeno Peppers, which were stuffed with fresh sautéed Gulf crabmeat and shrimp. Also, we had the Eggplant Belle Rose - Fried eggplant medallions topped with Louisiana crawfish, Gulf shrimp & fresh crab meat, then smothered with a creamy seafood sauce with fresh bluepoint crabmeat. The apps were awesome. I think I could go here just to eat them. Ok, now for the main course. I have to say I have eaten some steaks in my time, but I would rank this steak as #1 of all time. It was so good and the topping was awesome. It is called steak lafitte. It was topped with a the sauce called blue crab florentine. Wow. This is not on their menu on-line, but it is at the restaurant. One person had the fried shrimp and said they were the best they have ever eaten. Great atmosphere, location, food,,,will be back for sure to try other dishes on the menu. I will give this place 5 stars, because it was the best steak ever...

I am a native of this area and have eaten here several times. The food is excellent, true local cuisine. It has great history and atmosphere since it is in an authentic steamboat warehouse in what was once a bustling steamboat town in the 1800s. Very easy to get to off I-49. It is rustic and casual, but is special at the same time. The service we've experienced has been fine. Not exceptional, but about what you'd expect from a family cafe in a small town. It is sometimes crowded on weekends. All friends we've brought here have been pleased with it. Prices are in moderate range and in line with location. Not a fast food or cafe, but nicer table restaurant. Give it a try if you want to experience true local cuisine.

. Six of us visited this establishment on Saturday evening. We were in from Nashville, TN visiting home in Eunice. All 6 of us were so very pleased with the service, food, atmosphere, bar, etc. It was the 1st time for 4 of us. We all had different meals & 3 appetizers of which we tasted. All were perfection . All agreed nothing could have been changed. Oh, and 2 desserts! We will return!!

This is just a cool place. The building is an old steamboat warehouse (just like the name!) built in the 1820s that has been converted into an upscale restaurant. The place has a great atmosphere; there is a bar in the back you can hang out at while you're waiting for your table, and there is a great patio out back with a deck that goes out over the river. The food is very good. I've tried a couple different dishes here, and they have all been very well done. A lot of seafood, naturally, as well as steaks and a selection of other entrees (my wife is a big fan of the chicken strips.) Good place to come for some good food in a beautiful old building.

Steamboat Restaurant. Good food. Not so good service. The waitress acted like she had better things to do. Don't dare ask a question. Sorry but service is important. A little courtesy please. The food is good. Bit most dishes taste like the next dish. Only one veggie to choose from. Now it does have q lot of history

For a restaurant with an award winning chef, and award winning dishes, I wasn't impressed. I had the Crawfish Etouffee, which is supposed to be a world champion dish. The flavor was kind of weird, not like most home cooked Etouffee. I think they may have used an abnormal ingredient, or maybe it was just an off day. This places is also a little pricey, especially for a restaurant out in the middle of nowhere. You can see the full pdf menu here steamboatwarehouse.com/p… . The perks. This is in a real renovated steamboat warehouse right on the bayou. It's also out in a part of Louisiana a lot of folks don't go. So you don't have to deal with wacko tourists. Although they do come here, they just aren't as annoying as the camera holding, khaki wearing, weirdos. They also have quite a big selection available. When I'm rich and ready to spend I'll stop here again. Until then I'll probably avoid it.
