I used to eat here frequently back in 2006 and 2007. The food is mediocre at best but my real complaint is with the service. They hire drama queens for servers. They treated me like as a child and I was older than every one of them, except for one brunette in her late 30's, early 40's who had apparently failed at everything in life and was now doing this. I've never had waitresses be that condescending and rude to me. I never went back.

Whoever thinks that Strawn's Eat Shop has the best pie in town has obviously been born without a palate. I was at Strawn's recently and was saddened by the poor service and mediocre pie. We decided to have a pie date day as a family, so we all chose something different. That means I can sample more varieties. Zoe' had the peanut butter pie. It was good, but I have had better. Alli's apple pie was solid. If only it had a scoop of vanilla. Maddie ordered a chunk of chocolate cake. Very nice. Heather and I split the lemon and chocolate pies. The lemon pie is incredibly smooth and has a bright tartness. I'm pretty certain it gets that zing from lemon zest. By far, it is among the Hall of Greatest Pies. Now the chocolate is one that I haven't had the pleasure of eating before today. It's got to be scratch made with Hershey's cocoa. It imbues an incredibly deep chocolate flavor complemented with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Delicious pie. Normally, I'll get a lemon pie for my birthday. I turn 40 this year so I may have to get a chocolate pie, too.

We stopped over Shreveport on our way driving from New Orleans to Dallas, and found this restaurant by chance. It is a typical Southern style restaurant, offers very common home style cooking dishes. The foods were ordinary, not great but ok. The cost of the daily special was very AFFORDABLE, if not cheap. The services were great, that's why I offered 3 stars. Could come back later if I passed by again.

My husband and I were happy to see so many traditional diner items on our first visit to the grill. I ordered: roast beef, mashed potatoes, cheese and broccoli rice and green beans. Only the green beans were edible and they were out of the can. The mashed potatoes were instant, the rice had been cooked so long it had no flavor at all and had become mush, the meat was fatty and covered in globby gravy. Nothing had been seasoned. Even the fries my husband ordered were cooked in oil that was long over due to be replaced. The server was sweet and attentive but I can't image giving this place another try.

This place may be the prototypical southern diner, just judging by how bustling it was at lunch time. The interior, with two dining rooms, was smaller than it looked to be from the outside, possibly due to the table density. Overall, I'd go with an ok rating as you get good value here but the food quality is also average like. The fried pork chop Thursday special was good (2 fried pork chops with cornbread and 3 sides for $8.29 - so it's a lotta volume), but wife's french toast was soggy, and the coffee only lukewarm. Worth a visit just for the local flavor factor.

We stopped here on our way back home. I enjoyed it. I would give it 4.5 stars because its not amazing but I did enjoy it. We ordered a very filling and high card breakfast with a touch of protein... biscuits & gravy, wheat toast, fried eggs, grits, french toast, I really like that there is not a ton of salt and pepper added to their foods, I don't use salt when cooking for myself so I appreciate this. It made me feel not so bad about how many carbs I ate. haha French toast was great, but the gravy was nothing exciting. I am glad I chose this place for breakfast over the other places I viewed on here and saw in the area. Oh, breakfast served all day, as well as, other food served all day is a huge plus!

Went to Southfield Grill on Southfield Friday, 24 Feb 2012, during the lunch hour rush with my partner, Jim. Found two tables available and seated quickly. Would change location, which was at the north end of the kitchen against a partition, which directed the AHU venting down and across the table, but there were only two of us and this was a table for two. I ordered the one of the three Friday specials, the fried catfish, with three sides of okra tomato mix, fried okra, cole slaw, and cornbread. Short time later, my plate arrived with heaping servings of all items. The okra tomatoes were very well seasoned and the cornbread was a wonderful cake texture and sweet. Cole slaw also was on the sweeter side. Suited my taste just fine. Wait staff, although extremely busy, were friendly and helpful, as well as knowledgeable about their product. Even though filled, I ordered my favorite dessert, coconut icebox pie. Good filling, not so good crust. Interior was loud and conversation was not easy, but the main fare was delicious, the service staff great, and they will get a return from me to try other items on the menu.

Went on Sunday, service was slow. Got up and left after 10 minutes of sitting without water or anything. I was excited about some fried squash, but apparently rolling silverware is more important. Never going back! Be prepared to wait if u go. Greasy looking table and skanks taking smoke breaks! Waffle house is better.

Went there based on the reviews i saw on yelp. I was NOT disappointed. The staff was excellent and helpful and and it was crowded due to the weekday lunch hour, but even then i only waited about 30 seconds to get a table and my food was out very quickly. Its home cooking, country style and its good and plentiful. Get the specials, you cant go wrong period. I had the smothered steak and they gave me a free fillet of catfish cause i was new. Awesome.

Southfield is a lot like Strawns but just a little better in my opinion. Good service, decent pricing, big portions of down home cookin. The breakfast offerings are okay but the real diamonds of this establishment are the daily specials. They have a different mix of options every day of the week and its not just one special, you have several to choose from. You receive a king sized portion of the main dish, generous portions of 3 sides of your choice and can choose corn bread, roll or biscuit. FYI...The Broccoli and cheese casserole is out of this world! Probably being generous with 4 stars but I really do like this place. I can roll out of bed on a Saturday and not feel the need to get "presentable" and just go grab some grub from Southfield. I always have about half of my food leftover too. So stud muffin finishes his and then has my leftovers so you know he's a fan too!

went for brunch this morning with the family. my daughter had a softball tournament in town. found this local gem. and it was so good. i had the fried pork chops. mac n cheese, mashed tater and brocoli n cheese casserole. place is small with a very friendly wait staff. i would recommend this place any day. very family friendly and good home cooking. you got to try this out if your in the area.

I love this diner! Good home cooking, great sweet tea...what's not to love? I prefer this one in Shreveport over the one in Bossier. When I need some southern comfort, this is the place I go. I am pescatarian and I love that I can get lots of down home cooked veggies and fish here, though it may be fried. I keep this as a once a month gem I award myself. My family of Omnivores love the smothered beef tips, the broccoli cheese rice, the chicken n dumplings, the country fried steak, the chicken n dressing, and fried catfish the most. My only wish is that they would add smothered hash browns to the menu. When you want to be reminded of days gone by, eat here.

What a place!!! Although I was planning on getting breakfast, I opted for the chicken fried steak dinner instead. The VEGETABLES WERE SPECTACULAR. Never have my sides tasted better than my meal itself. The sweet potatoes were out of this world. Something out of a grandma's kitchen. The squash was not that great, since it was really soggy, but I overlooked it for the awesomeness of the sweet potatoes. I ordered the gravy on the sid for my chicken fried steak. Im glad I did, as the steak had the right amount of crunch and flavor to leave me satisfied, The place had a very cozy feel. Old school diner that felt kinda like an old home. Prices were quite reasonable here as well. Waitress was awesome and loved her personality. Its really hard to compare a place like Strawns to here, but if you want southern cooking, this place is a must.

Pretty good food. Didn't like the sausage patties but the eggs, toast and has browns were good. Had to wait 45 minutes for the food but that was because we went there right after the Firecracker 5k so it was packed. That's why I am not deducting stars for that. Parking was easy and staff more than friendly.

This used to be my favorite place - used to have great food and a great atmosphere. Now the owner rarely shows up and the waitresses are rude and the staff is unfriendly, uncaring, and unhelpful. My last trip was the end for me - I actually found a fly in my burger and the head waitress who has named herself 'manager' asked "well what do you want me to do about it? Do you want another burger or not?" My answer? No, thanks - where there is 1 fly there's more - I'll pass. I gave up on this place. I'm done, I'll never return and I do wish this place ill will. Hopefully they will close their doors soon or at very least have an overhall of the place and get better staff and cleaner cooks. I miss the old days when it was a great place with great food.

The food was good. The service was excellent. I will give it that. But here is the problem. I have no idea what kind of grease they use in their cooking. It may be lard. But I had an experience after eating at this place I have never had in my life. I came here for breakfast. That evening, when I went to the bathroom (and I apologize if this is TMI for a restaurant review), the water turned oily. The grease literally came out of me. That's how bad the grease level is.

Awesome southern home cooking! Great for breakfast! Tell 'em you want your bacon extra crispy and you will get in return the absolute most crispiest, most wonderful, most perfectly crisp bacon that you have ever had in your life!!! Real talk!!! Get your grits and chicken fried steak here! Love the fried squash! Chicken and dressing on Saturdays...the best! But the best pie in town, is right here and it is the Blackbottom Pie!...THE...BEST!!!!! They also have a fresh banana pudding that's so good, you'll punch yourself in the face! And my wife LOVES the peanut butter pie here!!! It's almost like, intervention time for her when it comes to the peanut butter pie. The pies at Southfield Grill DESTROY the pies at Strawn's!!!!! Yes. Yes, they do.

It's getting worse and worse. Used to be one of our go to spots. It's also despicable that there's no "contact us" page or link on their website to contact them, as if they already know they got problems and they don't wanna hear about it. And the bad thing is, they're the only 'diner food' restaurant in south shreveport, so they could really be great if they just knew what kind of monopoly they have on that market. We went there last night, about 6:30, for the nightly 'specials', and the waitress proceeded to tell us they were out of 90% of the 'daily special' food (look up their website and you'll see what I mean by 'daily specials'. She also proceeds to tell us this is a normal occurrence; they usually run out of the 'specials' food about 6:30 or 7pm every night. If it's a normal event ...... why! That's all I needed to hear. We just left and went somewhere else.

Everything, from the service to the food to the prices, was great! The catfish was perfectly cooked. Pies were homemade (I recommend the peanut butter pie). Cornbread was moist and delicious. I'm stuffed, but thinking about it is making me hungry again! My friends had the pork tenderloin, macaroni and cheese and hand cut French fries. We all agreed that the place was great. Would return!

I've never been inside. Just through the drive thru several times. I love their daily specials!! So far, I've only tried the vegetables and they are yummy! Oh the corn bread is delish as well. Prices are reasonable. I will have to try the rest of the menu one day.

Been a while since I have eaten inside, probably will be a long time before I go back. Food was good, of what they had, was out of a number of items. It was also freezing inside, supposedly the heat was not working. This place has really gone down hill, needs some work done, it looks really beat up. My next order will be to go.

make sure the owner is there before you go. he makes the night and day difference here. if he is there, the place is clean, the food is good and fast, and the service is friendly. if he is not, the place looks like hell, the food is slow, orders are wrong, served cold, service has a major attitude. i used to go here every weekend. one bad week-day expierence and i will never go back again.

I had Breakfast- 2 eggs over medium, biscuits and gravy. Eggs were cooked perfectly and biscuits were yummy. Coffee was hot and tasty. Service was excellent. If your are looking for a solid meal, at a great price, this is the right stop. Good home cooked diner food.

2 words - turnip greens! This place has a cozy laid back atmosphere that feels to a city slicker like I was in Hazzard County and was waiting for Daisy and the boys to come in. The prices on the specials are crazy low and the meal was huge portions. Thank you Yelpers for pointing us to this place.

    (3)
  • Chris J.

For what you get, the place is overpriced. During a recent visit for breakfast, I had a cup of coffee, biscuits and sausage gravy. It was $11. Two small, Jimmy Dean-esque sausage patties, two biscuits and some white gravy...$11. Maybe I'm just cheap, but I'd get the same meal for $6 at any number of local diners like George's Grill or Strawn's. I want to like this place, but I just can't find anything that makes it special.

  • Matthew W.

Tasty food, lots to choose from, friendly service. I am a Californian, so keep that in mind... I haven't been to too many Southern restaurants, but this is my favorite so far. I like the idea of the daily special, and it's not very pricey for that and 3 sides and a bread item. I went on a Wednesday, so I ordered the chicken fried steak, turnip greens, butter beans, black eyed peas, hot water cornbread, sweet tea, and I ended up taking a whole Pecan Pie home. I would say that for each of the items (except the sweet tea, which was the best sweet tea I've had - good tea flavor and right amount of sweetness), they were all very good, but probably not the absolute best that I've ever had. Except for the hot water cornbread and the butter beans, which I've never had before. For example, it wasn't my all-time favorite chicken fried steak nor gravy nor turnip greens, but each of those items I would still rate at at least a 95/100 level in terms of tastiness. I get the feeling that everything they serve is at the greater than 95% level. The server had to explain to me what butter beans and hot water cornbread were (remember ... Californian), but she was nice about it. When I was about ready to go, she asked me if I wanted a refill on my sweet tea, and I told her half a glass, and she offered to give me a full to go cup! I've never had that happen before.

Here is a down home restaurant if I ever saw one. There is so much comfort food on this menu that it's hard to figure out what to eat. I had eaten so much food this week that I was beginning to crave healthier food. Course, what do I do? I order a pork po-boy. But I did get the salad on the side instead of french fries. One thing that I thought was interesting is that when you order the dressing on the side here, they actually give you a bottle of dressing. And it's not just some non-labeled bottle, it's actually a bottle of Kraft dressing. That was sort of surprising to me. They made no bones that they purchased their dressing from a supplier instead of making it fresh. But hey, Kraft does have some good salad dressing. The Po-Boy was very tasty. The meat was tender and not dry. The lettuce was nicely shredded and the tomato slices added a little extra flavor. Yes, I actually ate the tomato. I'm just as shocked as you are for reading that. :p The salad that came with my sandwich was good. It had shredded cheese on it. Cheese always makes things taste better. They have a kid's menu with plenty of options. The kids can even order the daily special which comes with 2 veggies and bread. Adults get the same thing except they can choose 3 veggies to go with the entree and bread. Now don't let the veggies fool you. It's not just veggies you get here. It's mashed potatoes or turnip greens or mac 'n' cheese or bbq beans or potato salad. Basically, I think it's just a "veggie" alternative is all, not necessarily a vegetable. But the great thing about this place is that the portions are big. The service is awesome. The staff is friendly. It's definitely a good place to eat.

Awesome.

The best comfort food in North Louisiana. Absolutely love to eat here any chance I get. Their pork chops are so yummy! Breakfast is served all day, which is also great and so much better than the diner chains.
