Really good food... Not the greatest location.

Awesome food. My husband found this place on Yelp when traveling through on 20 West. Conveniently located off the freeway. The food is fabulous! I would definitely go there again. Don't let the outside appearance fool you. The good stuff is inside.

Don't let the store front fool you. This place rocks! Great southern cooking. We had a shrimp poboy, red beans and rice plus the special, which was smothered chicken (fall-off-the-bone tender) and rice with yams and greens. I'll go back next time I'm in town for sure.

I stopped here on a road trip starting from California: Atmosphere:3 Food: 4 Service: 4 The catfish is a MUST HAVE dish from this restaurant with amazing value (2 fish for around 8 dollars). The fish is perfectly fried and greatly seasoned. I'm not the biggest fan of the side dishes, but I ended up licking every bone of the fish. If I come back here it will be for the Catfish. We also had the stuffed shrimp, which were lower in value but were excellently fried and had good flavor. The service was quite slow, granted that this was very late at night (around 11pm). It took about 20-30 minutes for 2 entrees. There were at least 4-5 people ahead of me. I would have to say that the slow service was compensated by the late times that they are open compared to most places around the area. The people seem nice and friendly though. The outside looks a little broke down and scary at night, but this was balanced by an officer in the restaurant ordering food.

This place to my surprise had some very good Fish and Jumbo Shrimp you would will not regret stoping at his place which is a few blocks off the freeway.

  • Amy W.

The fried catfish is really special--probably the best I've ever had. The red beans and rice were also stand-outs--so, so good. The shrimp were good, too, though the "popcorn shrimp" were a bit too salty and spicy for my taste. Loved the homemade 7-Up cake for dessert! I will definitely go back if I'm ever in the neighborhood again.

Expections should be geared for down home, fresh cooked to order seafood & dirty rice prepared in a lil greasy-spoon near dive! Whole fried catfish, fresh & small. What they call shrimp I call JUMBO FRIED TO PERFECTION PRAWNS! OMG!!! Go! Enjoy and worry about calories later!

Big Jumbo Fried Shrimp. A local place better to take out. Rice and beans and gravy great. Cole slaw great. If you are the type to check yelp you should enjoy this joint. No ambiance just great food. I would eat here again. I just was in New Orleans and had fried shrimp at Roscos' and this is better. Did I say big jumbo fried shrimp. mmmmmmm.

Good food and decent prices. Recommend calling ahead due to high demand. Recommend take out to avoid the kitchen odors and the less than inviting ambience. I would go back even though the airport area is not very inviting.

Pretty good little lunch joint. Always get the Shrimp PoBoy and never been disappointed.

If you are passing through Shreveport- you must stop here! Just a funky looking restaurant attached to a gas station, but inside..... Delicious whole fried catfish, and shrimp - don't let the outside appearance deter you! Yummy!! The restaurant is clean, service was friendly.

Over-priced. Came here 4 times, the food us okay but certainly nothing worth driving out of your way for and definitely not worth the prices they want for it. I was in there today and that was the last time for me. I ordered the lunch special: 2 whole catfish and 2 shrimp, shelled out almost 9 bucks (drink not included in that price) and waited. And waited. And waited. After watching several other customers come in, order food and then get their food while I was still waiting on mine, I asked for my money back. I had been there fully 29 minutes! Lady at register was rude and did not apologize for the long wait, instead started making excuses. That kind of behavior crosses the line. I would suggest you take your hard earned money elsewhere where they will appreciate you and the money you spend there.

Great food and fast service. Not fast food, but good food served quickly, served hot and served with a smile. The best chicken livers with onions since mamma's home cooking (and I go on medicare next year). Be sure to not just look at the menu. Check all of the specials on the wall behind the cashier. My second and last day in twon and I will have to try out their gumbo for lunch!

The place doesn't look like much so initially my girlfriend and I were a little guarded... But we're driving cross country and wanted authentic Louisiana cooking... I was SO IMPRESSED. We got takeout of the fried shrimp and catfish nuggets.... Oh my word. Beyond INCREDIBLE. Absolutely killer delicious! A MUST!!!

For a no frills joint this place hits the spot. Straight from the airport, I wanted to get my first poboy fix. I usually opt for a fried shrimp poboy but went for the grilled instead. I've noticed that everytime I come to these places every item I tend to get is fried and it can be overwhelming. I didn't regret my choice one bit. This poboy was stuffed with grilled shrimp. At least 15 pieces and you know how stingy some places can be. Dressed perfectly and the perfectly buttered and toasted bread held up to the sandwhich just fine. The fries didn't taste like your run of the mill bagged fries. I'm sure it was but the inside was so soft and fluffy and not soaking in grease. Fried okra was really awesome! You can tell it is freshly breaded. An hour later and it still had its crunch. All this and a drink for under $13! This will be my go to spot when I touch down to Louisiana every time I fly into Shreveport.

The blackened fish was superb...and that's about it, and this may be enough for you. Nice people here, both staff and clientele. The terrific quality of the fish will bring us back.

Lovely folks, kind and friendly. I was pleased with every effort they made toward service, cleanliness and the freshness of the food served. They're doing a better than average (by local standards) job here on those accounts. That being said, I felt the flavors fell a little flat. I like a kick, a surprise, some spice or something to wake me up. This was simple, strait forward, dare I say "plain" (without it being an insult) - yet done superbly by that marker. Some folks like their food best this way. Unpretentious and unadventurous. I prefer my catfish filets cooked slightly crisper/longer. Fried shrimp where of good size, but lacking in flavor. Tarter sauce (cocktail unavailable) was tasty, but didn't add anything somehow. Coleslaw was fresh, and I ate it all, but I would substitute something else in its place for any future visit. Love the people, the freshness and the passion - they're doing that right! Just doesn't suit my particular taste. Otherwise, worth your visit... may just be your new favorite.

Monkhouse is situated inside/nextdoor to a gas station. They have a fairly standard menu for restaurants I have been to in Shreveport. I ordered the whole fried catfish. I've never had it before and it looked interesting. The meat flaked off easily enough and it had a good taste to it. It came with the standard rice, and some hush puppies. Overall they were not that spectacular, especially considering the food you can get at some other places in the area. They are definitely good, but given the choice I would pick somewhere else that serves the same style food. Now, in any other city, Monkhouse would be a good standard, but Shreveport has some pretty hard competition.

We stopped in Shreveport during a cross-country drive, and the person at the front desk of Holiday Inn recommended this place when I told him I wanted something authentically Southern. He warned me that it didn't look like the finest establishment, but looks don't matter, because it's what's on the inside that counts. Well, the inside didn't really look fancy either, but it doesn't matter because the food was delicious. My brother and I both got Po' boy sandwiches (shrimp and oyster); it was reasonably priced and left us full and happy.

Legit.. The real thing. Be prepared to wait as it is made to order. Fish, oyster and shrimp. Rice with gravy. I enjoyed every bite. Glad I stepped away from the hotel for a real locals joint.

Oh, my WORD!! The whole fried catfish is absolutely transcendent! BEST ever!! The fried shrimp are as grand and good as other reviewers claim, the remoulade is spicy and fresh, and on the counter today were four homemade cakes. We will return!! Kudos, y'all!

You wouldn't think it from the outside since the restaurant is attached to a gas station, but the food here is amazing. The staff is very nice. We had the fried shrimp and blackened catfish with their version of corn bread and rice with gravy. I stongly reccomend this restaurant.

Surprisingly good food. Whenever we are in Shreveport, I ask my husband to take me to Brothers. This time we ate there and Monkhouse. I was pleasantly surprised. The whole catfish was good. The prices are good too. Wish the tarter sauce was better, but all in all the food was good.

Everything a shreveport seafood restaurant should be: all about the ridiculously good food. As per other reviewers the actual building is part of an old gas station so if ambiance is important to you this would not be your place. But if you are ordering to go or dont mind sitting in a super casual, older (but clean!) fast food joint (this restaurant is not fast food - but it seems to have taken over a space that was) do yourself a favor and check them out. A lot of the menu is fried, cajun, and has a soul food style to it but daaaaaang their shrimp are BIG and whatever they batter it with is YUMMY and the seasonings and homemade remoulade are ridiculously delicious. The service is great, the ladies at the counter had lines almost to the door the whole time we were there but were sweet and efficient in managing a busy phoneline and dining room. Ordered the shrimp po boy and fried shrimp platter and they were among the best, if not the best, Ive had, ever.

Hubby got catfish and chicken wings with beams and rice. This is officially our new favorite place when we go to Shreveport.
