For my last meal in Shreveport, my brother brought me to Hickory Stick, because we're both blobs of men that are fond of barbecue. Spatially, not being from the area, I have no idea if this is a good part of town or what, but all I know is that it looked like a re-purposed fast food joint turned into a barbecue restaurant. But all hesitations are put aside when you walk into the place, and are greeted with the aroma of cooked animal fat mixed with smoke. It's a pretty cut and dry experience; you pick what you want in terms of meats, and if you want sides or not and then pay at the counter. You then take your food to one of the fairly generous amount of seating and enjoy your meal. Fountain drinks are available, and the refills are thankfully free because I tend to demerit any place that's stingy with refills. Because I was going yolo-swag all-in with my last meal, I went with a three-meat plate, because I wanted to sample three meats instead of being health-conscious or conservative and going with like just pulled pork or ribs. Instead, I went full-stupid and got ribs, beef brisket and sausages. Served with beans, cornbread and potato salad. With the drink, it rings up a little over $20, which is a little more than I'd spend on myself for dinner, but again, tourist. As the smell walking into the establishment would indicate, everything has a good smoky flavor. The ribs fall off the bone pretty easily, and it's tender without being mushy. The house sauces didn't really taste genuinely unique, and I'm guessing it's a fairly generic recipe with one or two spices added to make it "unique," but it wasn't bad, but it wasn't noticeably great. Honestly, between the three meats I had, I think I had to favor the beef brisket above the ribs and sausage. Everything in general was good, but I wouldn't say great. Four stars is pretty succinct at describing my personal experience; the location seemed pretty convenient, the establishment itself was comfortable and welcoming, and the food was definitely above-average in a grand spectrum of barbecue restaurants. I paid a little high, but it's also because I ordered a ridiculous amount of food. After I eventually sample a good variety of food that Shreveport has to offer, I could see myself coming back here again pretty easily.

Great brisket, sausage and Turkey. Sides were beans and potato salad. Tasted great! Great service, seems to be a popular place!

This was ok. We had the beef brisket and chicken with potato salad and beans. I've had much better. Everything was soooo bland, including the bbq sauce. Bottled bbq would actually have been better.

Best BBQ in town. Tender meats, good beans and the best, sweet potato salad I've ever eaten. The employees are super friendly and helpful. The jalapeños (in a jar by drink machine) should not be missed. Yum!!!

Loved the beef plate. Good portion and reasonable price. Staff was very friendly and truly thanked me for the business. Interesting decore and cafeteria style food service line.

No flavor at all! Not made with a rub. The bbq sauce has a strong vinegar flavor. Portions appropriate for price

Staff was friendly and the place was clean. The BBQ here is mediocre at best. I ordered the brisket and chicken meal. The brisket was dry and flavorless. The chicken had a decent flavor but was cold. My husband ordered ribs and brisket. His ribs were decent when coated with BBQ sauce. Nothing special about the food especially for the price.

Was at an event catered by Hickory Stick and wasn't very impressed. I had the chopped beef, potato salad and beans. It's not awful but it is your standard chain barbecue type taste. I won't be patronizing the restaurant anytime soon.

I don't know. The barbecue here is average, at best. The brisket, lean and thinly sliced, is a bit on the dry side, something no sauce can fix. (Maybe there's an option for a fattier cut?) And while the ribs are pleasantly smoky, they're small and not particularly tender. Sides are pretty standard and unremarkable. At least prices aren't totally unreasonable for a place like this. Plates, served with toast and your choice of baked beans, potato salad, or cole slaw -- pick two -- start as low as $8.00 or so. The two- and three-meat plates feel a little pricey, but, fortunately, they're not particularly stingy with regard to portion sizes. There's also the option of a $7.55 daily special, one for each day of the week. Unfortunately, three times a week, you're stuck with chicken & dumplings. I'm sure that the chicken & dumplings here are fine, but you're out of luck if you're after some barbecue.

Very good food; but as good as the food is there is something better... and thats the staff. I don't know where or how the owner manages to find, keep and encourage the staff at the Hickory Stick but this place is one of the finest examples of how to serve customers I have ever seen. The ladies at the Hickory Stick are just fantastic. Now to the food. I can personally recommend the turkey po boy. It is just fantastic. The ribs are great and so is the chicken. Real BBQ here too... not just a joint with a electric cooker in the back. If your a bbq lover like me... put the Hickory Stick on your bucket list... it's very good. Final advice is to do it at lunch. It just has more of a lunch flair than a sit down dinner restaurant.

as to the quality of the food - the bbq is as good as it gets in shreveport, of course personal taste caveat. as to the staff - how many staff would offer over the phone, to let you come by 1 1/2 hours before opening on father's day to pick up a to go order to take out of town. their best dish is southern hospitality!!

Okay, the Hickory Stick is a wonderful place to get good Southern barbecue. I had driven by the restaurant couple of times and seen the reviews on yelp and decided I had to try it. The staff at the Hickory Stick is extremely friendly and wonderfully helpful. The barbecue sausage is to die for and the Texas toast slathered in butter is perfect for the sliced BBQ beef. If I'm ever back in Shreveport Louisiana I plan on stopping at the Hickory Stick.

I went to this place a few years ago while in town visiting family. It is still as good today a I remembered it being back them. Being fourth of July, there was a ling line and it was worth the wait. The ribs were fall off the bone finger licking good. The potato salad was sweet and tasty. The slaw seemed a bit dry for my taste. Overall very good and a little on the pricey side. Good times!

I have been eating at Hickory Stick for over 30 years. I now live in Houston and stop in every trip I make to Shreveport. The chopped beef sandwich is the best out there, and I recommend getting the sauce on the side, the sweet hickory smoke flavor is more than enough. This is not a huge menu BBQ restaurant. Beef, chicken, ribs, links and other sandwich meats. The beans are to die for, for anyone who remembers Hamels, they did the beans for them years ago. The staff has been there for years, and all of them are wonderful people.

I have always loved Hickory Stick BBQ, but I was very disappointed the last time I was there. They are now preslicing the beef. If I am paying $5 for a sliced beef sandwich, it should be sliced in front of me like Padnah's. The presliced beef was sliced much too thinly and was very dry. I also wish that the line staff would wear gloves like most food restaurants these days. It is also annoying when they try to give you the small plate and mini-bowl for the beans.

This is top notch BBQ. Better than Podnuhs? Maybe so.

Great turkey po-boy and try their spicy BBQ sauce...you have to ask for it. I get the turkey po-boy with the spicy sauce on the side, beans and potato salad! Yummy!
