the food wasn't that good. chips and salsa were pretty good. nice spice on the red sauce but not to hot. main dish was a special entre "asada and enchiladas". I think most people would not like it because the "chimichuri" sauce was so hot it over powered everything else on the dish. the meat itself was a flank or skirt steak which is a tougher cut of meat... it was. But it was cooked to right temperature for me. the enchiladas were well kinda weird...they we OK again couldn't really taste them. the margarita...was there ANY tequila in there? nuff said. staff was friendly and attentive. and the restaurant was fairly clean.

My most favorite Mexican restaurant in Shreveport. The chips and salsa are to die for, no one can beat them!

Pretty good! White queso was the best I've had anywhere else. Salsa was so good! Very unique flavor and yummy! Their fajita beef has great flavor, seasoned perfectly!

I've been coming here forever. The staff are all usually polite and friendly. There are regular specials presented on the menu as well throughout the year. Unfortunately the food is only mediocre. It's typical of the other local Mexican choices: microwaved. For the best waiter ask for Rudy.

I have loved this place since I was 13. Chips and salsa are always good but when they're hot they are GREAT!! This location has a new manager that knows how to get things done and customer service is what matters...even though I have endured bad service for good food. Example: remember Pete Harris Cafe, well I only ate there 3x in my life but the food was worth it and the service was to be remembered (as what not to do). Back to El Chico's: 1) I've worked here during college so I know the kitchen is clean and they don't use Microwaves (or at least not @ Fern Ave. Greenwood Rd & the now defunct Baton Rouge location). 2) Fern has the best "extras" but Bert Kouns/Youree has finally stepped into the BIG BOY LEAGUES and offering 9p-1a bar menu and staying open later than 10pm to have a BAR crowd. 3) I wish they'd switch to fresh pressed tortillas but what they have works for me. 4) Mgr. Cedric Secoundiata and the older Hostess really know how to cater to you for a budget-friendly place ....they are keepers. 5) I never have room for dessert but I have made trips specifically to order the APPLE PIE with BRANDY BUTTER SAUCE & the Cinnamon Ice Cream on top. Now, separately, none of these things make me excited but together....GOOD GRACIOUS!!! 6) Super broke: Go for just the Tortilla Soup. 7) Need something more "american" get the Chicken Strips with that White Gravy or the Fajita sandwich. OMgracious. I could say more but this is lengthy so you can tell my joy & passion abounds a plenty when it comes to El Chico's. Greenwood is the closet location when I'm home so I will go there and put up with the less than stellar service in order to get my "El Chico fix" but each has it's own personality and quips, I'm sure.

Really great food, prompt and courteous service, and a minimal wait (~5 min, at busy hour!) made for a very pleasant dining experience tonight. The new managers have turned this place around, to their credit. The Shrimp Enchiladas had a scrumptious tomatillo sauce, and inside, fresh, perfectly wilted spinach with a generous portion of shrimp in each bite. My wife's Carnitas tasted as good as the autentico 'cabeza' recipes we've sampled in San Antonio. Great job! We'll be back!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
