Stay away from this place! I got the worst service I've ever had. They even got my order wrong... TWICE! The waitress is more worried about gossiping than doing her job... The food was somewhat ok, I've had better!

Loved the crab and artichoke soup. Po'boy was just ok. Service was nice.

It didn't live up to the hype. Great food and service, just did not live up to my expectations.

On the Half Shell offers a menu very similar to many other local seafood restaurants. In addition to oysters, the menu consists of standard fare such as catfish and shrimp offered fried, grilled or blackened, crabcakes, and a few other standard fresh fish options. When compared to other area seafood restaurants in the same vein, I'd say the food is average. There are really two drawbacks to this place. The first is the place itself. It's located on the end of a strip mall and shares parking with a gas station. If you are seated near one of the few windows, a gas station provides the scenic view. Even if not near a window, the ambience leaves something to be desired, in my opinion. They've done an admirable job with the whimsical nautical theme, but the place often feels strangely quiet and dreary inside. Here's the other issue. One of my biggest pet peeves about dining in Baton Rouge is the absolute disregard that restaurateurs seem to have for hiring professional waitstaff. Seemingly everywhere you go in town, regardless of how expensive, you have a pretty good chance of getting an undertrained college student as a waiter. On my most recent visit, On the Half Shell took this to a new level when everyone serving the dining room was of high school age. On this Saturday night, my wife had a couple of questions about menu items. At first the waitress completely shrugged off the question. Then she gave what turned out to be a laughably incorrect description of the item my wife ultimately ordered. It was completely evident that the waitress knew nothing of some of the items on the menu, including basics like the differences between sauces on their fish preparations. Now, I know no one is going to confuse the place in the gas station parking lot with fine dining, but when you're paying $20 per entree plus drinks and appetizers, I do expect a little more. Bottom line, you probably won't be disappointed with the food here, but you will probably have a more pleasant overall experience somewhere else.

Placed am order for pickup and had to walk nearly into the kitchen to pay for it because you must pay the person who took your order. Over priced but food was delicious!

Being a native Louisianaian, there are many restaurants back home that I'm fond of. On the Half Shell is never a dissappointment! The food is always good, served hot and super tasty! Give it a try, you will love it!!

Really yummy seafood. Went with a large party, were seated right away and had good service through the whole meal.

We faxed in an order for a party of 12 of my co-workers in advance and they took it with no problem. When we all arrived, we were served in less than 10 minutes, so they really made it quick an easy for us. I'm not a seafood eater, so I can't rate it. I had the grilled chicken club, which was very good and well prepared. The onion rings are perfect too; not too greasy.

Food was OK, but not great. You have to be great to sell seafood in this town. Underage waitress was disinterested bit we gave her 15% anyway. Won't be back anytime soon.

Went with another couple for dinner and then met a group of friends at the bar for drinks. I should have known we were in trouble when there were very few people there on a Saturday night. We ordered our food and when the waiter brought us our salads he did not give us any silverware. We politely asked several other servers and they told us he would get them. Finally, my friend had to get up and go to the kitchen to retrieve some. I ordered the Shrimp Jefferson which was an eggplant casserole with shrimp on top. For $17.95 I was expecting a much larger portion than the small casserole dish I was brought. The dish was terrible. When I go out to eat I really want to eat something that I can't cook at home better. Three small shrimp sat on top and they looked like they were charred under a broiler. My husband ordered the shrimp dinner which proudly boasts jumbo shrimp. The shrimp were medium at best and the dish was mostly fries. My friend ordered a baked oyster appetizer and she was served a large piece of bread with her appetizer. I wasn't even given any bread. Afterwards were met six other couples in the bar area. My husband ordered a beer from the barmaid and she told him some outragous price was due and he said, "For what?" and she said for all the beers he drank. Needless to say, that was the first beer we had ordered in the bar. She obviously was trying to scam people because she told another friend that his bill was for sixteen beers. He said, "If I drank sixteen beers, I would not be talking to you right now." A little later my husband ordered another beer. I just so happened to be sitting at the bar with another friend when she put the beer on the counter and noticed my husband was not around and took all his change and put it in her tip jar. I asked her where his change was and she had to dig it out the tip jar. Can you believe that?

Great seafood! Some of the best oysters around. You have to try the Guidry's Dozen. Live music in the lounge makes it a great place to relax with a beverage while eating.

Great meal tonight here. It was very busy tonight. My food was excellent - the service was not quite as good which is why I took off a star. Our server was obviously new; she did not explain the specials or even tell us about them. She could not answer several menu questions as well. But she gave a good effort otherwise. I had a dozen oysters on the half shell to start. For my meal I had their grilled shrimp poboy, with a side of baked sweet potato. The meal was excellent.

Went here because Sammy's was closed. Signature grilled shrimp poboy was good, but the fried catfish I got for my son was excellent! We'll be going back and this time dad will get catfish!

I went here for lunch with my mom yesterday. Service was great. Everyone was helpful and friendly. Food came out pretty quick. And the place is clean. BUT I had the tuna with seafood gumbo. Tuna is 17.99 which isn't a big deal. But believe me I have had fresh tuna and it just falls apart when cooked right. The piece of tuna I had didn't taste fresh at all. It had more of a frozen tuna taste. I could be wrong but it was hard and tasteless. Seafood gumbo was good but my rice wasn't cooked all the way. I'm not planning on coming back again

Very disappointed. I've tried this place twice, and I'll never go back. First time I was left standing in line by myself and after 20 minutes I never was waited on. Second time, ordered to go platter. Was told 15 minutes it would be ready. After waiting for over 30 minutes I had to ask again. My order came out cold, a few little oysters and 2 catfish strips, small salad. Wow! BIG DEAL! TOTAL RIPOFF! for almost $18.00. I can't stand this place!

We go fairly often ONLY because they're right by our house and there's no other place nearby for raw oysters, unless you want to wait 2 hours for a table at Sammy's. The service is slow, and the non-oyster food is just average and way overpriced. Also, their crackers suck. I know that sounds petty, but it's not. We like saltines with our raw oysters. This place uses a cheap, no name saltine and every single time we go, there are more broken crackers than intact ones. Seriously. I usually open about 24 twin packs of crackers trying to find 12 non-crushed crackers for my dozen oysters. My wife has to do the same. It's really annoying, not to mention messy and wasteful. Anyway, there aren't other options, so we go. But if you're not dying for raw oysters, there's no good reason to visit this place.

Nothing to get excited about. Ok for lunch. Steaks aren't good. Seafood is ok, salads too. Service is ok.

Really good food. Try the red beans and catfish. The shrimp poboy and gumbo are really good as well:)

They removed all the cool decor for just plain jane and put vinyl table cloths over the decoupaged tables. Now it's just mediocre atmosphere. My oyster salad was loaded (14) oysters cooked to perfection with tons of greens.

The wife and I had lunch here this past Friday, as recommended by a friend. My hot roast beef poboy with au jus was good but nothing special. The wife's oyster poboy was good but somewhat bland. Service was adequate but cleanliness was subpar. Both of us had to "dump" the crumbs from our chairs before we sat down, as if a child ate crackers prior to our arrival. Prices were reasonable to slightly high.

Service was terrible. We sat in the bar area and it took at least 10 minutes for the bartender/waitress to greet us (and we were starving!). She had an attitude. It took an additional 30 minutes to get our food (and they weren't busy). The fried pickles were ok, the galvez catfish was so mushy and tasteless I didn't even finish it. The worst sweet potato fries I've ever had. I didn't know sweet potato fries could be so tasteless. The only saving grace was that the oysters were amazing.

First and last time we will ever go to this restaurant. The first 2 items I tried to order were not available, the waiter was never around (only 2 other tables had customers), the food we ended up receiving was over cooked, and the rest of the staff seemed to be having a party in the kitchen. The only time the waiter showed any remorse was when he brought us the check.

While visiting my best friend, she told me this is the best place for oysters. She was not kidding. We had everything from a dozen raw oysters and two dozen of the char grilled ones as well. The service was great. Our waitress was very attentive. I can't wait to visit her again in the next few months. A repeat visit to this restaurant is long over due. I will also take pics of our food for all you food porn peeps. ;)

I stopped in for a New Orleans style po boy like used to have as a kid growing up there. What I got was an anemic po boy, seasoned well, with a bunch of greasy, tasteless fries. Also, it was overpriced at $14... Still hungry
