We moved to Opelousas almost a year ago. We decided to come here for breakfast this morning after church - they had already run out of biscuits :( so we got the sausage gravy with toast instead - it was soooo good, I am certain to go back and try that gravy with the biscuits! We also shared a beef patty with brown onion gravy and two eggs- toast and grits. That was just right - very much "home" cooking! There is a 'choose" four, five, six ... menu which we intend to try one day, too!

Not the one on Canal in the old Werlein's building. This Palace Cafe is in downtown Opelousas. I lunched here with a friend who's an Opelousas native. It was his suggestion, and a great choice it was. It's a quaint little place bordering on 100 years old that serves great Southwestern Louisiana fare- crawfish many ways, fried chicken, fried and grilled seafood, red beans and rice, and of course gumbo. And I tell you, cher, it's about the best gumbo I have ever eaten. I ordered a cup of the shrimp gumbo and my friend ordered the chicken andouille. Both were heavy roux based gumbos, very dark, smooth and outstanding. What I really liked was that the shrimp were put in right before serving, basically poached in the gumbo so they were firm and perfectly cooked. I also ordered the fried catfish which, again, was about the best ever eaten. An order is comprised of 4 large filets, relatively thin and perfectly fried. Each entree comes with 3 sides which frankly were forgettable. What wasn't forgettable was the price--$8.99. Amazing. I will make a point of going back to this place as often as I can.

Awesome food and friendly service. Under new ownership and NOW OPEN on SUNDAYS for lunch/brunch! All the same great food, but a daily buffet too and all at reasonable prices!

Ok food dated but historical appearance good spot for court house attendees. I went here twice in my lifetime as a resident of this area that should tell you enough.

While working in the area I stop by The Palace Cafe and got some breakfast. I ordered scramble eggs, grits and a biscuit. Overall this was a really good breakfast and the biscuit rate up there with The Fresh Markets biscuits. Which in my opinion are as close to homemade as it gets.

A good place for lunch on my way back to Texas. Gumbo and fried oyster po'boy were as good as ever.

We had a great meal here. We started with gumbo, which was absolutely amazing. Then, we went to the crawfish plate, which had crawfish bisque, crawfish étouffée, and fried crawfish tails. All of which was very good. It's been awhile since I've had such a great combination (which says a lot because we're from New Orleans). I definitely recommend the chocolate shake too. We did have a hamburger, though it wasn't needed at all because the other food was plenty to feed two of us. The hamburger was average compared to the other items, but think it would have held its own had we not ordered the other. Service wasn't quick and items came out at their own pace, but given the sheer volume of tasty food, it was a perfect pace and we were enjoying a slow, relaxing day. I would recommend it based on our experience.

The gumbo was awesome! I ate here on the eve of Mardi Gras 2011... Very friendly... I even had friendly conversation with several other patrons

Painfully slow service. if you are not from the area, when you walk in you know you are an outsider. We ordered the fish specials, the fish however, it was placed on cold rice. Even our teenage boys who will eat anything, couldn't stomach the hamburgers.

A local institution, the Palace Cafe's staff is friendly and welcoming. The food is just okay. The beef vegetable soup I had with today's lunch was excellent. The Lima beans were passable. The cornbread dressing merely edible. However, the chicken-fried steak entree was abysmal. It was pretty clearly a commercially prepared and frozen slab from the freezer. The homemade praline cheesecake was good.

My husband and I were here 10 years ago. Came back while on vacation. Food is still great. The po boys were awesome. ( we had crawdad) The gumbo was just ok. But that po boy was worth the drive from Arizona....

The Palace Cafe is your best option in downtown Opelousas. Although they changed ownership a couple years ago, the traditions, staff and cooking excellence seems to have largely remained. The fried seafood and gumbo are the things to get here. They use a great batter and fry up oysters, catfish, etc. just right. The gumbo is a heavy, dark roux base with a great taste. BOTTOM LINE: If you like a true old school experience mixed with great southern cooking, then the Palace Cafe in small town Opelousas is your place.

I've given this place several opportunities and it has always failed me. Will not be returning
