A little hidden away, but good food at reasonable prices. We were the youngest couple in there, by about 20 years, and we are (just) in our 50s. These old people know good basic New Orleans food, but don't go there expecting high end meals, just enjoy the home comforts of what they serve.

This is a Metairie institution that my great aunt and uncle used to love. I stopped in here with my dad for lunch at around noon on a Tuesday. Considering the time, the place wasn't super packed and we were seated quickly. Looking over the menu, it's all local New Orleans kind of food. For a starter, I decided on a cup of turtle soup. It came with some sherry to mix into it, and while I have had better turtle soup elsewhere, it was good and it definitely hit the spot. For my entree I got the fried oyster platter that came with fries and a side salad. The platter was perfect. It was huge and packed with large oysters that were juicy and lightly fried. I liked that the platter came with both tartar sauce and cocktail sauce for dipping. There was so much food that I was more than happy to be able to take some of it home for later. My dad got the lump crabmeat au gratin. It looked amazing and it was covered with cheese, which made me definitely want to try it the next time I am here. My experience here was great. Heather was our waitress and she was super nice and attentive and made sure that we had everything that we needed. I will definitely return to Mr. Ed's.

I've been wanting to check out Mr. Ed's but, due to its tucked away location, it's never really top of mind when I'm thinking of new places to go. Recently, I had to opportunity to finally try it out and ended up having a very enjoyable meal. I was with a larger group (there were around 10 of us.) We got there somewhat early and were one of only a handful of tables at the restaurant when we started. However, by the time we left, the placed was packed to the gills plus had a line of folks waiting. The other reviewers are definitely correct about the, um, shall we say "advanced" age of the majority of the clientele. I think it's probably because (1) their prices are crazy reasonable and (2) they do serve a number of entrees that appeal to that age range, such as chicken livers (my mother, who is pushing 70, claims good ones are almost impossible to find these days.) Usually when you have a larger group, service can be slow. Not the case at all at Mr. Ed's. Our server took excellent care of us and didn't even blink at the high-maintenance folks in group (you know the folks I'm talking about.) She had other servers helping bring out food and watching for empty glasses. I was impressed by the service. Then came the food. Our group pretty much hit all of the areas on the menu. Speaking of the menu, what you see on their web site is just a tiny glimpse of what they offer... they literally had dozens of specials that were not on the printed menu. There were two sheets of specials in the menu, multiple menu boards on the walls with specials. I'm pretty sure there were more "specials" than usual menu items. And the food was really good. And, kind of shocking considering how low the prices are, but the portions are huge. Really, really huge. I almost never take leftovers, even if I have food left, because I always just end up throwing them out. But I took a heavy box full of leftovers and actually ate them later. I did manage to force down a piece of lemon meringue pie at the end of the meal, too. It was a damn, fine pie. I usually end up scraping off at least part of the meringue because it's either too much or just not very good. This meringue was perfect and I ate every bite. I'd definitely go back and try something else. I'd also like another piece of that pie while I'm at it.

The exterior is clean, but plain, however the interior is very attractive and decorated with many local pictures. The bar area is also well presented. We thought our waitress, Hilda, did a very fine job. I ordered the Half Shrimp and Half Catfish Dinner Plate, which came with an enjoyable side salad. My partners shared the Deluxe Seafood Platter, which also came with the salad. Their Seafood Platter included shrimp, catfish, oysters, and a large stuffed crab item. Both meals had fries, of course. We were impressed that the fried seafood was not greasy at all, but had lots of flavor. They must have taken care with the batter. We found everything to be very good to excellent. We recommend it and would return. RJT

The service was excellent hence the 3 stars but the chicken which was a part of the competition did not have any flavor. It was perfectly fried and crispy and it appeared to have black pepper seasoning on it but it tasty very bland. I would try this place again for other dishes but not for the fried chicken. I see now why dookie chase won the prize for best fried chicken.

Heard about this place for years. My friend saw they were recommended for their fried chicken on Nola.com . We both got fried chicken & decided we would start testing out fried chicken all over the city on Fridays. I got dark, my friend got white. We also had cheese fries and potato salad. Small green salad came with entree. Iceberg, one cherry tomato, one cucumber. The fried chicken was not impressive. Sure, the meat was fresh and the batter was decent in crispy thickness. Problem is there was no flavor. No seasoning, quite boring - could have been in the midwest. Silver lining: Nola Blonde on tap. (not on menu) Good news, JP has moved on from basic Abita.

What can I say about this place! It's awesome! Food is simple fresh and good ole New Orleans style food. My family of six all had to go boxes because of the large portions served. It's a comfort food place for sure!

Great place, definitely a hidden gem. And yes, we were DEFINITELY the youngest people in there last night. But the food is really good. The appetizer menu is kinda average, as were the calamari. BUT our meals were good. I dont remember what we ate the last time we came here but last night I had the grilled chicken salad (I tryin to pretend that I'm eating healthy), he had the Crawfish & Crabmeat Ravioli (I dont know if that's really the name of the dish). Both meals were just really good The waitress had a little 'tude but I think we warmed her up. We're jokester rascals!! She recommended the fried chicken the next time we visit.

Dinner here last night, for the first time. It is definitely old school, but the kitchen knows what it's doing! My eggplant Parmesan was delicious and my husband really liked his stuffed Mirliton dish. We both had the garlic vinaigrette dressing on our salad (it's their house dressing) and it was wonderful! (This is coming from someone who makes her own salad dressings!). Our friends ordered the soft shell crab dinner and the fried chicken dinner and raved about both dishes. There was a $3 charge to switch the candied yams for new potatoes on the stuffed Mirliton dish, and I have no idea why, but, whatever. Our waitress wasn't very good, or personable, but, whatever also. (This is why 3 stars instead of 4)

This place is a step back into the 70s. The portions are generous, the menu is right out of my childhood, and it is so inexpensive! I wasn't wowed by the paneed trout topped with crawfish etouffee, but it was decent enough to get me back to try something different. I wish I'd tried the stuffed mirliton (for you Northerners, this is AKA chayote). If you go to Mr. Ed's, make sure to take a look at Bernard's gas station next door. It's straight from the 50s, complete with sloped windows and stacked flagstone. It could be a movie set. It was built in the Golden Era of Bucktown, for sure. Oh, those happy days!

This is a great old school neighborhood eatery with classic New Orleans Creole and Italian dishes. They offer classics like turtle soup, gumbo, red beans, fried chicken, pasta and po boys along with more ambitious entrees (and for the Texans that crave it yes they have a chicken fried steak). They have a fantastic roast beef poboy with delicious chunks of garlic and a nice thick gravy. The ambiance is more 70's style than classic New Orleans architecture and the crowd certainly trends more towards the geriatric but this place is more hip than any hipster could ever dream of. The menu selection is excellent while portions are generous and prices make this place a good value. This is an authentic locals joint with most of the folks working here being locals that give it that extra bit of local soul that many places have lost over the years.

I love Ed's restaurants! This one and Austin's are both wonderful. The food is as solid as some of the ladies' hair that frequents the place for lunch. Truthfully lots of senior citizens have their regular lunch spots and this is on their weekly list. If it is good enough for them to keep coming back count me in too. The older folks who have lived here for over half a century know their food. Food is very good. Huge portions. Two dining rooms with a bar between them. Great vegetarian options on the menu too. The restaurant is hidden in a neighborhood near the lake. Recommend: * Crabmeat Au Gratin * Chicken or eggplant parmesan * Grilled Red Snapper ** Lemon Ice Box Pie (best thing on the menu)

Tucked into the back of the Lakeview neighborhood, this location of Mr. Ed's has the old Italian family feel. Unfortunately I went here with my sister and her family on a Friday and did not order the pasta which looked to be the best thing on the menu. I had a shrimp poboy because I really wasn't that hungry and it was meh, just a shrimp poboy.

My wife has tried to get me to go to Mr Ed's and she finally got her wish but it came at a price. The parking lot spaces are too close making it hard getting in and out of your car without hitting another car. Walking in it has that old restaurant vibe, and the white paper table clothes are great for making doodles while waiting for your food. My wife ordered the veal Parmesan and i got the seafood platter. We both got side salads, that came with the typical generic ranch dressing so it didn't have much of a wow factor. Not to long did our food come out, The veal was good, a little tuff but good, the red gravy / tomato sauce tasted like it came straight out the can and added some sugar. The fried food looked great, but should have gotten some more for the price. The shrimp and fish were perfect, the stuffed crab tasted funny to me so i let my wife have it after she thought it was ok. Overall the experience was ok, maybe if i am in the neighborhood i might stop by and give them a second chance but i wont go out of my way.

I am only adding a positive star for the Leidenheimer bread and the gumbo. They were both good. Overpriced and terrible food. Three of us hadLUNCH. No booze soup, red beans and rice, and the crab cake special over rice. They charged me $9.90 for 6 pieces of garlic bread. Total bill was $97.00 with tip. Horrible crab cakes. All filler and mushy. Eat at your own risk

I'm all for second chances, especially when it comes to restaurants, but time and time again the food here has just not been good. I've tried multiple things on the menu and been disappointed, over charged, and not to mention nauseous multiple times. Aside from the food, you spend the majority of the LONG time you will wait for this unappetizing meal feeling like you are on top of the table next to you. The only good thing about this restaurant is that the wait staff are friendly. But that does not makeup for an expensive meal being a small step above fast food.

I have a hard time saying this place even deserves 1 star. Absolutely terrible. Stuffed artichoke was rock hard, gumbo was watery, batter on shrimp had black spots and our server was lost in space. Stewed chicken had a bad after taste. Most enjoyable part of the evening will be the yummy tums for dessert.

I had the southern fried catfish special which came with jambalaya, it was very good. The jambalaya had plenty of shrimp and sausage in it and had a good taste to it. The southern fried catfish also tasted good and was a good size portion. I was there for lunch and the portion was more of a dinner portion, but it does the trick, just plan on skipping dinner if you eat it all.

This local restraint chain has gone steadily downhill. The food at the location in Kenner is awful and don't go to to their burger joint without investing in Pepto Bismol. The only saving grace in this chain has been the original location on Oak. Now,unfortunately, this place too has succumbed to the same level of quality as the other locations. Additionally, the service is not as good as it once was. They are living off their success and cutting corners on food quality. I took my parents their yesterday. We had the fried eggplants and gumbo as an appetizer, "fresh" bread, and two seafood entrees (Trout Carrol and the Crabmeat Au Gratin). The fried eggplants were salty and thin cut like fries. The fresh bread was cold and not lightly toasted or warmed. The trout was over-cooked and the vegetables also cold. Half of the gumbo was rice and good luck on finding any seafood. The crabmeat au gratin was soupy liked it came out of a blender. Also, beware if you substitute any side of your entree. I got my bill and noticed I was charged $3 to substitute fries for new potatoes! The waitress said she would see about adjusting the bill. She came back with nothing changed. Typically a manager would come to the table but he didn't want to bother. When I complained to the waitress that no adjustment was made, her only comment was "I only work here". That pretty much sums it all.

Whoever voted the fried chicken no 1 needs to have there writers fired it was totally bland no flavor whatsoever had better chicken at winn dixie and a lot cheaper. My wife had the chicken parm same thing bland no flavor atall my son had a shrimp poboy shrimp under cooked the only thing decent was the onion rings.after I complained to the waitress she in turn told the manager who never even came to my table to address the situation. Then after all of that they had the nerve to charge me 6 dollars formy sons milk worst 74 dollars I ever spent. First and last time we will ever go there not that anyone cares. Hope this keeps you from wasting your money.wakeup bucktown quit settling for convienence.

Wow! What a gem. Don't let all of the blue hairs scare you away at lunch. This place serves up fantastic New Orleans specialties. Each dish is fantastic. The service is great too. This joint is hidden in a neighborhood in the burbs, but it's worth it. So come here and leave satisfied.

15 years and still dining at Mr.Ed's on a near weekly basis. Always consistently above average on food, service, and decor. Favorites include turtle soup, stuffed bell peppers, and trout almandine. You can't go wrong at Ed's for a casual, relaxed, solid Louisiana dining experience.

  • Katie T.

All I can say for Mr. Ed's is heavy, fried food. Just not my cup of tea for a place to eat. It's very casual and is probably a great place to have lunch for a poboy, but for dinner I can't really say I enjoyed it. The menu has so many items on it, but they are all so fattening sounding. I had a fried shrimp poboy, which came out as a platter and had to send back to be made into a sandwich. It was enormous!! The shrimp were ok, I've had better. My son's spaghetti was better. I didn't really like the atmosphere, I can't really explain what it's like. Almost like a prefab home, just no real character. Not really my style, I feel like I'll remember it for the wrong reasons. I don't think I will be going back.

Mr. Ed's is one of those restaurants that has a little of something for everyone. They specialize in Creole food and fried seafood, but if you want chicken parmesan or a burger, they have that too. I tried the eggplant casserole on this visit, which is a rich and buttery concoction, thick with crabmeat and shrimp. The steamed vegetables and potatoes that accompanied the dish were undercooked, but that's my one complaint. Doug had the red beans and rice with a breaded pork chop, and I'd go back for this plate...it was yummy. The oyster po boy is good, and I like their gumbo. The lemon meringue pie was very good...a rich custard whose full flavor really comes through if you have the patience to let it come to room temperature. This is a neighborhood restaurant, and the menu will not win any awards for being cutting edge, but the food is solid and the service is good. We like to sit at the bar on game nights.

This is a great place to take your kids to after work during the week. The food is decent, and the atmosphere is friendly. There's a claw machine and a huge aquarium filled with the cutest fat-headed fish to keep your kids entertained. I personally enjoy the grilled chicken on bun, dressed. I don't know what they marinate their chicken in, but it's super tasty and moist every time! Yum! Another great dish is their creamy seafood pasta. The sauce is excellent!

Being a visitor from California........ I'm grateful for stopping by this "local" eatery! The location is in a residential setting, so I could see why there would be no foot traffic or tourist stop! As a visitor, I had to try the Po-Boy sandwich. I got a half catfish and half shrimp sandwich! The shrimp and the catfish were both full or flavor.... I couldn't decide which one was better! They were both delicious!!! We also ordered a seafood platter with fried oysters/shrimp/catfish! The plate was HUGE! More than one man can eat! The service was great! All in all an awesome experience! For all you visitors...... try and make it out to this joint! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT

Great food! Will go again. However: Have been almost rude on the phone when trying to place a take out order- on more than one occasion! They seem to like folks to come in for service rather than packing it up. They forget there are lots of restaurants in this town who don't serve attitude.

I am so dissapointed in Mr. Ed's. I had 7 people from out of town working here in NOLA. I sent them to eat at Mr. Ed's and I am terribly embarrased at how they were treated. The waitress was very rude and impatient. She brought the food out and put it on the tray next to the table and then walked off and went and helped another table, then came back and gave everyone thier food. It took forever for her to come around and refill drinks. The manager was allerted to the issue and did nothing to remedy to the situation- not even an apology. They asked to split the check and the waitress said they dont do that- so she made everyone write down what they ordered (because each had to pay seperately due to company expenses) AND the price. When she came back to the table she snatched the credit cards out of everyones hand and then ended up doing seperate checks anyway. I am so embarrased that my out of town guests were treated this way. I am a regular customer at Mr. Ed's - BUT NO MORE!!! That sealed the deal for me. No way to treat tourists!!!

Popped in on a whim and was really surprised how good the food is. Solid New Orleans blue plate special type cuisine- just up a few notches. Enjoyed the older crowd and bar regulars who look like they come every night. My kids enjoyed the crane machine. Friendly staff.

Went here for lunch upon a colleagues recommendation. I had the eggplant casserole, which she raved about. It came with a sad little salad - literally 4 or 5 pieces of lettuce with one cherry tomato and one cucumber slice. I would have rather skipped having it all together since it was so scarce. But we did opt for the seafood bisque as an extra which came with a crab ball afloat in the creaminess, which was a nice touch. The casserole was too rich for me - I couldn't taste the eggplant and the main flavor I could detect was creamy sauce. The stuffed peppers were the same - but that has a lot to do with Southern food too - I think. The peas that were a side were really mushy and watery. The green beans and carrots were a little undercooked. The service was friendly and I had my iced tea refilled constantly (which I appreciated). What really stole the show was the dessert - tiramisu, meh - I could make much better. But the Ice Box Lemon Pie was TO DIE FOR. Airy merengue suspended over tart lemon custard on a crunchy crust. Now THAT I would go back for - skip the main and go for dessert!

This is a great alternative in the Bucktown area to Deanies or R&O. You can find me here at least once a month. Service has been excellent since Katrina (2005), it used to be a bit sketchy. Fried onion rings, stuffed artichoke, & fried eggplant strips are my favorite appetizers. Portions are large. Eggplant parmesan is great. Grilled pork chops are good as well. Fried chicken is a nice change of pace from the usual fast-food joints too. Be warned, the menu tells you that it will take 25 mins extra, but it is worth it if you are craving chicken.

We have gone here twice- both times we were very disappointed. I figured that the first time that we went must have been an "off" night-ok, i get it, any one can have an off night. The second time we went, though, it was just as bad. The prices belie the quality. A $15.00 fried catfish platter had 8 catfish nuggets and a ton of soggy fries. This comes with a generic iceberg lettuce salad with one cherry tomato and one slice of cucumber. A well brand drink costs $9.00. Their wine cellar consists of Franzia boxed wine. The desserts are food service quality, certainly not housemade (and for the price they should be). Frankly, looking at the other reviews, I just don't get it. This place is nothing to write home about. This is a food oriented city and there is no reason to eat 2nd rate food. I have had better food at Piccadilly. I do have to say that the service is excellent, but that is the only thing they have going for them. Parking can be tight even on a week night-go figure. All I can imagine is that their popularity is based on familiarty rather than quality.

Consistently good food and service. The lunch specials are a bargain and you get SO much food. Everything is good - fried chicken, red beans and rice, breaded pork chops, seafood, and Italian dishes!!

This is where the locals eat. . . . . . . located in Metairie along Lake Pontchartrain in a neighborhood setting. For the price you pay this is one of the best meals you can get in the area. Great Seafood and Italian dishes with daily specials that can't be beat. Make sure you order the Crabmeat Ravioli if it's on the menu.

Have been spending some time in Metairie lately and have been searching for a great place to eat. While searching online for Buster Holmes fried chicken recipe I accidently came across Mr. Ed's. Before driving to this establishment I asked several locals about Mr. Ed's and everyone said that the food was excellent. Tucked away in Bucktown in a residential neighborhood I almost missed this place but glad I didnt. My partner and I are both Italian so we both ordered our favorites, Eggplant parmigiana and Veal parmigiana. Both of our lunch specials came with a salad and a piece of garlic bread which was a little stale but good. The breading on both the Veal and the Eggplant was perfect and my Veal was milk white and delicious. Although I'm not a fan of Marinara and prefer a good Italian seasoned sauce the Marinara was fresh but a little sweet. All and all we enjoyed our dining experience at Mr Ed's and cant wait to go back for some of their seafood or their fried chicken which I've been told is the best in New Orleans.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
