THIS IS THE BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN LAFAYETTE I seriously don't even know where to start.. "Always 2 for 1 Margarita's" is a good start! My favorite salsa in town, and the salsa is the number one way to judge a Mexican food place before you ever even order a bite. Chips are fresh made in house and taste great. All food is priced very well, this place could charge a LOT more for this type of quality: -Queso (cheese dip) here is the best I have ever had, and I'm from Austin, Tx where that is a claim to fame.. -Chicken/Steak Quesadilla: HUGE! The meat is loaded with insane flavor and you will not be able to finish it, crazy how big this sucker is! Comes with all the trimmings -Taco Salad- Another Huge plate. Giant crispy Taco Bowl loaded with all the fresh ingredients and tons of perfectly grilled meats of your choice. -Fajitas- I cannot believe how great the flavor is! Comes out with lots of garnish and plenty of tortillas. -Enchiladas- I have ordered ever meat, cheese and sauce they offer here and each time its my "new favorite." No matter what you like, this will be your new favorite enchilada place. -Chimichanga- Another HUGE portion, stuffed (and I mean STUFFED) full of all the best ingredients of your choice, so much flavor and so much food! -Combination Dinners- Under $9 and tons of great choices! Cannot believe how great this place is, I have been here a dozen times in the last 6 months alone. Great food, no, AMAZING food, very well priced (almost cheap) and the service is really, really great also. Very fast and always ready to get you what you need. Lots of Booths, area for parties and tables too.. TV in the main dining room but no bar area that I can think of..

Hmmm... forgot about this place. I've eaten at more than a dozen Mex places in Lafayette -- and about 50 in Texas, and this place is pretty good. Just the excellent service and the chiles Rellenos are worth the trip. yumm. And I believe the Margaritas will get you hammered quickly.. oh wait, I forgot about them... wonder why?

I have enjoyed using yelp all over the country but have not created an account until now. My wife did not have a good feeling about this place but after 12 reviews and a good rating I assured her it would be good. Man was a woman's intuition right. The toppings and fajita sides came out minutes before the meat which had no sizzle or steam. You could say it was cold. Had to ask for the flower tortillas twice. When they finally arrived they were so thin our fingers pierced through the greasy mess. The manager and our server would only blame the cook and offered no consolation. We will never take another look at this restaurant.

After moving from Pineville where Los Portales was the best mexican food anywheres, I was afraid I'd have to travel there any time I wanted good mexican. One day I decided to try mayas. It was like I was back to "Los". The food is amazing. Can't go wrong with the chicken fajita quesadilla. My friends usually get the chicken fajita nachos.

Honestly, outstanding chips and salsa, huge delicious fajitas with more than enough fixins. Friendly staff, and free ice cream. Never disappointing!

Let me first say just by looks alone I would have never stopped here, if it weren't for the reviews. This place is in a very industrial/sketchy neighborhood. First impressions weren't good- the place is in serious need of a remodel as previous poster said and the bathrooms were NASTY. However, we stayed and the food wasn't bad. It's more authentic style rather than tex-mex so on the blander side but still good. Portions are good and prices aren't too high. We tried the cheese dip, cheese quesadilla for the kids, chicken chimichanga and shrimp quesadillas, all which were pretty good. All in all not bad, but I've definitely had better.

Want authentic Mexican food? Don't come here and if you do, bring an interpreter. I know I know, that sounds mean but jeeeez.... how hard is it to order extra lemons, extra onions, extra cheese.... can I please have my tea I ordered for the 4th time. It simply wasn't worth the very VERY average food.

Food is good. My chicken fajita was really good. Service was pretty slow. It took about 10 to 15 mins for the waiter to take our order. Then took about 30 mins for them to take our payment.

You can always tell how your dining experience is going to go in a mexican resturant by the pre food indicator known as the margarita. This place doesn't disappoint. These were the best margaritas in town. The price was right too. The Tortillas are made from scratch and the salsa is an 8 out of ten which is pretty good. The portions were sized large with the flavors to match. I will be visiting again as soon as possible.

We are Sonoran Desert transplants and I loved that I could get a spinach enchilada full of fresh sauteed veggies and traditional thick chips. It was great! 2 for 1 margaritas, also good. Our toddler loved the free ice cream cone on the way out which totally reminded me of the family mexican restaurants from my youth in Texas.

If your looking for a good value, and truly traditional Mexican food...this place is it :) I have yet to find something on their extensive menu I have not really liked. Service is always friendly, quick, and very accommodating if you request something on the side. Drink refills are always on the spot too :) Tacos here are good, filling, and fresh. Their Guacamole is actually real Guac, not that frozen canned crap you find at other local places. Fajitas here are wonderful, delivered sizzling and the veggies used are all homegrown too :) Chimichanga is wonderful too! Big plus, you can watch them make their own tortillas as well, so all around your getting fresh, home made food with traditional flavors and spices. Only thing I *wish* they had was Pollo La Crema (chicken in cream sauce)

Although I'm a gringo, I grew up in southern California, and I ate my first taco before I ever had a hamburger. I'm no Mexican food snob, though: When I read Yelp reviews from folks concerning Mexican restaurants, the term "authentic" pops up often. But what is "authentic"? Fans of Tex-mex might consider that variety authentic, but people who enjoy the amazing things done with dried chiles in New Mexico might beg to differ. Heck, what's "authentic" in a border town such as Juarez or Tijuana probably wouldn't cut the mustard in Guadalajara. My measure of Mexican food is simply whether I enjoy it. Well, I ate at Mayas today, and dang, I sure enjoyed the food. I took a hint from Benjamin C. below and ordered the "Guadalajara Especial" because I walked in feeling ravenous. Even with such warning, I was astounded at the quantity of food that showed up at my table for a mere ten bucks. I was sure that I would make two meals out of it, but I ended up polishing off nearly all of it. It was that good. I thought about calling a taxi, feeling too full to drive. Go for fresh ingredients made with care, a friendly staff, and a cool atmosphere that reminds me of places on the fringe of the tourist strip in Mazatlan. And yeah, arrive HUNGRY.

Skip this place, unless you like thick chips and Paces salsa.. Not too good. We had beef tacos and a steak burrito. Our server wasn't great either. He never asked how the food was, delivered it, then came back with a check at the end. Won't be back.

The best fajitas I have had in Lafayette and good prices too!

Fastest Mexican food this side of Zapata. The service here is unreal. We seated a table of 6 and the chips and salsa literally jumped on the table in a blur. The drinks weren't that far behind. The orders were taken and the cook must have had esp because the waitress literally returned in minutes with all our food. The order was 100% correct and very tasty. The drink refills were the same blur that we had seen earlier. The cost for lunch was well below what I had expected to pay and the quality of the food was a complete surprise.

Maya's was just what the doctor ordered for two transplants who had, to date, been very disappointed with the Mexican restaurants in Lafayette. If you have driven along South Evangeline Thruway, then chances are you have seen Maya's large yellow building. The interior is hacienda style, nothing fancy but comfortable. The staff was friendly, and our server was fantastic. The chips and salsa, which really set -up what is to come in Mexican restaurants, were amazing with a salsa that was thin but flavorful. We also tried their guacamole, which was fantastic. The only negative in the whole evening came early on when I discovered they only serve beer and wine, so bye bye Mr.Margarita. My wife ordered a steak fajita burrito which came covered half in rojo sauce and half in a cheese sauce, she said it was delicious but rich. I opted for a specialty of the house that goes by the name "Guadalajara Especial", I don't know why I did it, I am not a particularly big eater and I have, in fact, been to Guadalajara and nothing about it made me want to eat a plate of food the size of a small developing country. But order it I did, and here is the breakdown (photo also included) - One layer of beef nachos, topped with a layer of chicken nachos, on top of that the center a large beef tamale which is then covered with shredded lettuce, sour cream and guacamole, then on top of this pile is placed 2 beef taquitos. Simply put, it kicked me up one side of the street and down the other. The hardest part was that every single element that comprised the dish was excellent, not just good but excellent, so I wanted to keep eating well past my breaking point. In the future we will be splitting one. In closing, we loved every minute of our trip to Maya's, minus the absence of Tequila, and will certainly be going back - most likely after a fast.

It is the best Mexican joint in Lafayette. Eat here for the food, not the atmosphere. Chips and salsa are endless and delicious. We ordered the steak fajitas for two, which are big enough for four people. They came with tons of peppers, onions, tomatoes, sour cream pico de gallo, but no cheese which I found to be odd. Overall it's a good value and I recommend it. FYI, cheese is an extra couple bucks and a can of Tecate cost more than the Chile rellenos

Very good food. Huge portions. Great service. Great chips, good salsa. FYI:Google maps shows it two mile (wrong side of airport) on 90 than it is actually located (or they moved).

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
