I was in Lafayette for work and decided to stop at La Carretta since it one of my favorite restaurants in Baton Rouge. My colleague and I were so disappointed. She got the chicken fajitas and it came with one big chicken breast that was under seasoned. I got the chile rellano and it tasted like it was fried in old oil. It had no filling and was soggy. I gave it two stars because the salsa was good.

Chile rellleno for hubby with a salad Two flour tortillas, grilled chicken breast, refried beans & pico Chicken is cooked to perfection This time my food came out right the first time! The pico is spicy but not to spicy Refried beans!! Hello what's not to love I shredded my grilled chicken breast then put Refried beans first then chicken then pico!!! Love the complimentary chips & salsa Now for the annoying part!!! Nope, I hate folks that use yelp to bitch!! If you have an issue address the manager don't come here and write up a complaint I ignore mean complaints usually it's a disgruntled employee Now I give this place 4 stars as everyone has room for inprovement!! See you again soon Server didn't introduce herself but she was great

Still love coming down here even if it just for a couple of Margaritas, and some chips and salsa. Over the past few years it has definitely become on of our favorites.

My wife and I recently tried this place for lunch on a weekday. We arrived when they opened at 11:00am. Overall, I'd have to say that it was well-above-average and I would have no problem recommending this place to my friends when asked about local Mexican food joints. The good: -------- The establishment is clean. nice decor. comfy. good service. tasty food served hot. The bad: ------- If you're going to serve an item covered with some type of sauce, then your menu should clearly state so. My chile relleno was swimming in ranchero sauce, which was quite a surprise being that there was no mention made of said sauce in the menu. Also, when I ordered, the waiter asked me if I wanted it stuffed with shrimp or cheese. Once again, a surprise being that only cheese was on the menu. The ugly: -------- This place doesn't appear to have any management... or perhaps the waitstaff have just grown so "comfortable" working there that they don't pay attention anymore. Whenever you have four or five people crowded around the hostess stand "shooting the breeze," well, to me that says "this isn't a very well run place." Salsa is the signature item at many Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurants. Not at this place. If you guys want to know what you should be serving, try getting some here.... MercadoJuarez.com/world-… By the numbers: -------------- Overall - 4/5. well-above-average, especially downtown where the competition amongst food providers can be pretty intense. Food - 4/5. very tasty. salad had very fresh ingredients. nice presentation. food looked and smelled appetizing. chile relleno was well prepared and very flavorful. there was obviously not only good recipe, but good technique here as well. (please see "The Ugly" for my comments about the salsa here.) Service - 4/5. seated quickly. very attentive. polite. friendly. quick. food arrived hot in a timely manner. Atmosphere - 4/5. pleasant. cool. fresh air. colorful. inviting. relaxing. TV/music not so loud as to interfere with conversations. Misc: ---- Here's a note to Hannah, the young lady who waited on us. Please consider dropping the word "absolutely" from your vocabularly. Older folks, like me, occasionally want to hear "yes, sir" or "no, maam" in response to their questions. also, when you approach the table with the check, and the gentleman has his wallet on the table with a credit card sitting on top of it, this means that he is ready to go. instead of dropping the check on the table and then running over to chitchat with your coworkers for a few minutes, you should wait by the table for thirty seconds, and then take the bill/credit card to be processed.

Went in here for the first time. I wanted to sit down and eat and drink. However, the acoustics in this place are HORRIBLE. It was so noisy I could barely stand it. Sounded like being in a gymnasium. The voices of everybody talking echoes throughout the restaurant. No area is quiet. The waitress was nice and I'm sure the food would have been good because it smelled good, but the noise factor was just too much. Was really excited to give this place a try. Sadly, I won't be returning.

Toooooo much Cilantro & I don't like it to begin with!!! Not on the menu was on it! Had the tacos al carbon. The meat was disgusting. Had the tamale (pork) absolutely no flavor!!! The waitress didn't know what the red sauce was, can I tell you it was HOT without flavor!! I had to go to another Mexican restaurant to fix my taste buds!! The plate was pretty tho!!!!

Once again excellent!! Stephanie continues to be a great manager, always making sure her customers are happy, Desi was great as our waitress and her recommendations were spot on. The table side guacamole was to die for, so was the carne asade and the mahi mahi Monterey. We continued to be very pleased with this restaurant and highly recommend it.

Lunch here was a good experience for me. I'm not the hugest fan of Mexican cuisine, but this was the only eatery downtown I hadn't sampled, so I took a shot with La Carreta & I'm glad I did. I started out with the complimentary chips & salsa, which were great. The salsa contained enough pepper & cilantro to give it the right kick & the chips weren't greasy at all (bonus). I ordered the La Mexicana (Chicken Quesadilla, Beef Enchilada & Rice) & substituted beans for the usual rice. The portion was very filling, the lunch prices were good & the service was fast & friendly. A really good use of color in the dining area set the tone for a relaxing atmosphere, too. I've heard this place is very expensive, but I guess the lunches are a bargain. With my tip, I spent $10 & I am FULL. I'd absolutely suggest La Carreta over Agave any day. Given the lunch prices, I'd say you could afford to give these guys a shot & form your own opinion of them.

EAT HERE!!! I'm a Mexican food fanatic. I just recently moved to lafayette from Michigan and have been dreaming of a place like this. Sundays are the best day, not crowded and the best drink specials. The margaritas rule and the food is phenomenal!! Do yourself a favor and have a foodgasm at this place, I know I did.

Fast becoming my favorite Mexican place in Lafayette. I've been 5 or 6 times and everything has been consistently fresh and delicious. Even the sides are yummy! Love the enchiladas el patron and of course a great big tasty margarita (or two) to wash it all down.

Yippee!!! A good Mexican restaurant in Lafayette! The food was fresh, the service was good, and my husband and I both thought the prices were reasonable for the size of the entrees. I had a green salad with steak on top, and it was delicious. The chips and salsa were fresh. I tried the margarita the waiter recommended, and it was very good. We plan to go back to try some more of the entrees.

I was in Lafayette for conference from Houston. happened upon La Carreta. Great service, I think manager/partner is Stephanie, she is fabulous. Loved the service, the people and the happy hour $2 drafts !! The salsa is excellent, coming from Houston, we know a little about Salsa. The # 33. TACOS AL PASTOR Shredded Pork with fresh Cilantro and Onions, Avocados and Bean Soup was awesome. very happy with the recommendation. I was so thrilled I went back again the next day, got the Enchiladas verde. They were good, not as tasty as the Tacos though. Enjoy your visit there. K

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
