This is a staple of Harahan. The roast beef poboys are awesome, slow-cooked and sloppy. The poboy and sandwiches are made to order and brought to your table. Take out orders and catering are also available, plus it doubles as a small grocery with a deli counter...the kind of place you would run to in case you discovered an ingredient was missing from your cupboard while you're cooking. The Red Wagon also offers a daily lunch special. I tried the catfish and it was wonderful - grilled not fried with parsley potatoes, french bread and banana pudding. The banana pudding put this lunch over the top! It's very casual and typically filled with regulars that the staff knows by name. They don't take credit cards, but do checks. It feels very nostalgic and inviting. Next time you're in the area skip Popeyes and pull in next door to the Red Wagon. Good food at good prices - what more do you need to know?

My husband and I eat at the Red Wagon at least once a week. We have tried most of the menu items. Lately we are experiencing high salt content in the roast beef and bbq beef poor boys. I had the roast beef plate lunch and could not eat it. TOO SALTY. All the gravies used on the plate lunches are too salty. Now - the seafood poor boys are so good. If you are sensitive to salt, eat the seafood.

I was born in raised in River Ridge and came back from Houston to visit family for Mardi Gras. Even though I'm sure Red Wagon has been in existence since the 1970's, I never knew about it when I lived here. I was looking for a good lunch place near River Ridge and found Red Wagon on Yelp. We had very low expectations for the dine in experience and brought our check book to pay. My son ordered the catfish po boy and he said it was the best he had ever eaten. I got the roast beef po boy dressed and it was delicious. My wife got the shrimp po boy and she said it was excellent. We got fries and etouffee for sides and both were delicious. It was so good, we went back there for dinner on the way to our Friday night parade. I got the hamburger po boy which was good and my wife got the shrimp etouffee platter which was very good. I also bought some deli sliced roast beef and turkey which were both delicious when we made sandwiches with them the next day.

In the past, I have enjoyed the seafood poboys and the hotplates; red/white beans and rice and the meatloaf are some of my favorites. Based on recommendations in the reviews, I decided to try the roast beef poboy. I was very disappointed. The roast beef flavor was lacking, and the texture seemed off. (not sure how to describe it, but it seemed firmer than what it should be) In any case, I will go to Koz's on Hickory Ave. if I want a roast beef po-boy in the Harahan area.

I like this place. I went for the first time on Saturday. I had always wondered about it. The place is ultra inexpensive. A 10" Poboy for $5? It is in the classical old world style of mainstay Poboy shops. It has vintage in use Coca Cola napkin dispensers that look as though they have been in use since the 50's. It is a relaxed but steady vibe of customers coming in and going. The service is ultra quick. I tried the roast beef for the first time and it was good. Maybe a little more chew than I would want but it was good. Side if fries were large and good. The price was right for sure! I will try a more daring choice next time. If you are in the Jefferson Hwy side of Harahan, DO NOT GET FAST FOOD, GO TO THIS PLACE. This is about the same price for higher quality, quantity, and fast as it gets. This is how it should be. I look forward to exploring this place more.

This I've been going here since I was a child. It's always good, fresh, and fast. Great local joint!

Po boys, burgers, seafood platters and daily specials are served cafeteria style here. You get in line and then order your meal but don't forget to grab a drink from the coolers, as they only have bottle drinks and beer, then pay at the cash register. At lunch this place gets pretty crowded so you might have a wait to find some seating. The food is generally good with some standouts. An interesting and busy place with some friendly folks working there. Cash or check only.

Good food. Great tasting shrimp po boy fully dressed. Quick service.... I would have given you 5 stars except for your rude ass cashier. She was a taller brunette in cut off shorts and a shirt advertising Cozumel. (I give the description b/c there was a shorter brunette lady who was a doll) please reevaluate this person's roll as your shining star for customer service. Please switch her out with the other lady and have her bus the tables.

Red Wagon, Red Wagon, Red Wagon.. What can I say about thee? I believe that Red Wagon is so polarizing in perspective given by the beholder. Either Old Harahan Staple, or Guilty Little Pleasure, an a few in between. A seemingly little standard Market/Buffet style sit down restaurant, but there are Some surprises here along the way. Monday lunch specials and the Meatloaf with gravy, Mac an cheese and a side salad.. The Meatloaf, is HEAVENLY, really, American comfort food that will please your soul. The Mac and Cheese, ask them to cover that in gravy, is beautiful.. The side salad, looks more like the toppings of a burger than a sald, but tis can be forgiven Given the gastrogasm you are still basking in from the Meatloaf. Don't even bother with the bread on the side, which was, well dry..yeah, I'll simply call it dry. This place is a simple, yet delightful Harrahan institution and the specials are the reason why. Don't expect fancy, don't expect Uptown, just expect the unexpected... Good, time honored, comfort food.

Over a decade ago I worked out in the Harahan area and still remember some of the places I used to get lunch. Now I find myself again working in that area and trying to remember (and find) those places I used to visit. One of those is Red Wagon Grocery. While there are two very small aisles of goods (enough to maybe call it a "grocery" I guess) the real star and reason to visit is the lunch counter. Line up and give your order to the nice person by the counter, either a poboy or the hot plate of the day, then go down to the register and pay. They will bring your food out to you if you are dining in. The poboys are pretty standard and the roast beef is really good. But the real star for me is the hot lunch, especially Monday's meatloaf special. Monday's lunch is two nice sized slices of meatloaf and two big scoops of baked macaroni, all smothered in grave (you can get it without gravy on the mac, but why would you?). Pair it with a piece of buttered french bread and your choice of salad, desert, or side and you've got a hearty meal for a good price. The only thing I don't care for is the register is cash only. They have an ATM on location in case you forget but then you're stuck with a couple dollars in fees making that lunch cost 50% more.

First time here. Very friendly and welcoming. Cashier is even polite. We ordered oyster PoBoy...16 inches (wow). I got the shrimp platter, comes with choices of sides and dessert. They have great daily lunch specials, too bad we gave up beef for Lent. If I lived closer, I'd eat here everyday.

Great little neighborhood restaurant. Great meatballs and fried shrimp. Lunch time there is a crowd so we usually go for dinner. Friendly staff. Budget friendly.

Comfort food is a good way to describe it. I kind of look forward to forgetting to pack a lunch because it means I'll call in an order to Red Wagon. I call in, drive over and my meal is ready to go! You can easily spend $6 and have leftovers. I recommend the turkey club, and I am looking forward to ordering on a Monday or a Wednesday to try their mac and cheese. It looks like a guilty pleasure. Beware: CASH AND CHECK ONLY

A hidden restaurant in Harahan in a small strip mall. Plus it doubles as a small grocery with a deli counter... Quite a few 4 seat tables with black and whited checkered table clothes. Fairly full at lunch time. Place your order at the counter and it is brought to your table. Just tell if it is for here or to go. In addition to the regular menu, there are also daily lunch specials M-F. All specials are served with bread and (salad, veggie, or dessert). My favorites are their Meatloaf w/ Baked Macaroni and the roast beef plate. You also order the roast beef as a sloppy poorboy. They don't take credit cards, but do take checks.
