Great home cooked breakfast. Delicious gyros. Great Cincinnati chili. Only drawback is smoking in the dining room. Also, they only accept cash. Give em a try!

Solid local chili spot. I had the 5 way and a slice of baklava. Opened in 1986 and has that neighborhood diner vibe. Would have given 5 stars but the baklava was not the freshest. Still ate it though!

Great Breakfast. Fast, friendly service. Amenable customers and a pretty low price. What more can you ask for? This is a true diner, in the best sense. In business since 1976 (the son of the founder was working the register), this diner was absolutely GREAT for breakfast. I has scrambled eggs, hash browns and goetta, a breakfast meat loaf slice made up of pork and beef, tiny oats and spices. (It's a Cincinnati thing, I think. Maybe German in origin.) I would highly recommend this place. Based on breakfast, it should all taste good.

Diner breakfast done right. Sure it's smokey but I'll exchange that for the authentic Northern Kentucky atmosphere anytime...(definitely a cast of characters). The food is super affordable and if you would like an interesting story about the owner check out the back of the menu. I'm sure drunk me will be back to try the chili or gyros. Also heads up...it's cash only.

Gourmet Chili has a distinct peppery goodness. The cheese melts into the Cincinnati chill with a creaminess. Plus a killer Gyro and breakfast... everyone can get what they want here; and leave full and happy.

Best breakfast I've had in a long time and they have goetta. Very friendly waitstaff. This was my first time and they treated me like I was a regular. Too bad I won't be able to return. After I ordered a guy sat next to me at the counter and lit a cigarette. I forgot you can do that in Newport. Nobody seemed to mind and then, as if on cue, just about every table lit up. The sad thing is that everyone had this ash-grey tone to their skin and just looked unhealthy. Go figure. I ate in record time and left after only about 20 minutes and now I reek of smoke. This place would have gotten 4 stars without the smoking.

Cincinnati Chili. It's an institution. Everyone has their favorite between Skyline or Gold Star, but it's places like Gourmet Chili in Newport that are what made this style of chili a Cincinnati mainstay. This restaurant encompasses all the things that I love about Chili Parlors. Long bar top with stools to sit at the counter, open grill top, and waitresses that call you "sweet heart" and "dear". Sure they still allow smoking in the restaurant, which is a bit odd, but during our lunch, I didn't even notice it. My favorite thing about this parlor was that it is one of a kind. The walls are adorned with pictures of family and a huge print of Cincinnati from the 70's with Riverfront Stadium. The print itself is stained from what I imagine is 40 years of nicotine, and that just adds to it's awesome. The chili is a consistent, meaty, and somewhat spicy of a chili. It wasn't accompanied with the grease that is often found with Cincinnati chili and the regular portion was more the enough. The spice, as where it wasn't overwhelming, definitely added a nice kick that you won't find in most mainstream chilis. The noodles were firm and not overcooked. and held their shape throughout without getting mushy. The five way that I had came piled high with a great cheddar. It wasn't as bold as some, but it was certainly up to par. The accompanying coney was also pretty decent. As where it was a bit sloppy, I'm not really grading on appearance. The dog was juicy, the bun was steamed as is tradition, and once again the chili was piled high with cheddar. Add in the typical mustard and onions and you have a pretty solid coney. Priced VERY competitively, my coney and 5 way came to a $6 total. Sweet. Overall when you add up ambiance, location, and food, this is one of my favorite chili parlors. On a scale of 1-10, Gourmet Chili receives a solid 8. ----------- I have to update this post. Since my original post I have been back to Gourmet Chili 10 more times. I have to say I'm a bigger fan of them now than I was when I first started going. The staff is extremely friendly, and remember us whenever we walk in with a friendly "How ya doin'" and a handshake. The food is still as good as ever, and it's a great diner. But I don't know if I can take the smoking anymore. Today I sat next to a table in which both patrons smoked throughout their entire meal. maybe if there was a smoking section, or a non-smoking section that I could be quarantined to, I'd be cool with that. But I've been to beer bars in the deep south that weren't as smokey. I highly hope they fix this, as I love their food and hospitality, but I'm not sure if I can regularly visit it if it's going to be so thick.

Breakfast Club Adventure Seriously...breakfast at a chili place? Um, heck yes. Stepping in off the street you are taken back to what a great diner should be. Its buzzing with coffee and order ups, busy waitresses and a cook calling orders. I had a few people with me and all of the tables were taken but 2 different regulars asked if they could give up their tables for us, wow that in itself was good ol' kentucky charm. The menu is pretty breakfast basic and they have one hell of a breakfast special deal; eggs, potatoes, toast and meat (goetta baby!) for under 5bucks! woah. It was amazing!! Definitely worth checking out for breakfast and not just late night munchies. Also note---its a cash only kind of place! You will smell like smoke afterwards, even after breakfast (it adds to the charm, unless you have allergies boo)

This is the kind of place I love. Give me a greasy spoon breakfast any day. They have a $4.75 breakfast special (3 eggs, fried potatoes, toast, and meat) and I got a slab of goetta for mine. The wife got a goetta omelet. All our food was delicious. And, it's nice to see a place where a family has their kids working there on a weekend too. As previous reviews have stated, there is smoking allowed here. If you have an issue with that, you should likely head elsewhere. We will certainly be back!

One of the hidden gems in the Tri-State! This is a family owned and ran business with nice service and very very very good Cheese Coneys. Trust me stop by and grab some today...

My friends would have it that this is one of the best chili places in town. I have to say... no, this is not the best place in town. Allow me to be a bit of a chili snob here. 1) I dont think their chili is that good. 2) The service definitely rates as a "meh" 3) I hate places where even if no one is smoking, you still come out reeking of smoke. The food at this dive is passable and cheap, but I definitely wont be seeking Gourmet Chili out for my chili needs.

Food was very good and reasonably priced but if your a non-smoker it kinda takes away from the overall because they don't really keep a non smoking section. It's a small mom an pop's but they really need attempt to keep smoking and non in different places to cut down on the smell. Would be 5 stars if not for that.

The gyros are great and the best reason to eat at Gourmet Chili. I think that if you come here and order a chili dog that you can't write an accurate review. I'm not a big fan of any chili places in town. My husband has ruined the local chili places with his homemade three way chili. I think the food tastes the best when the owner or the other guy cooks. I don't prefer to eat if one of the lady servers are cooking. It just doesn't taste as good when they cook it. They do allow smoking but I don't think it is that bad. I normally get take out so I can't comment much further on smoke or service. They are usually pretty nice to me.

I've lived in Cincinnati for a good portion of my life, and made it a mission to try every chili parlor in the city. I accomplished my goal recently, and am having trouble choosing between this place and Camp Washington as my favorite. Their chili is great, the buns fluffy. But one thing that stands out with Gourmet Chili is their cheese. It's very finely shaved, very unlike other chili places - you could almost blow it off the top of the bun. It is however, very sharp and just melts in your mouth unlike other cheeses. If Cincinnati Chili isn't your thing (for shame!), they have plenty of other offerings such as gyros and breakfast. It has a great local diner feel, and seems like it's one of those places that people would know your name. If you're a Cincinnati Chili fan, you owe it to yourself to check it out - you won't be disappointed.

My wife and I had the gyros and they were great. You get a ton of meat for a very reasonable price. Tasted great too! Would be great for a cheap greasy breakfast spot.

This is one of my favorite hometown restaurants. Have ate there as a kid, sometimes 1-2 times a week with my family or by myself. The gyro is lamb meat staked on top of a pita bread, with cheese, tomato and cucumber dressing. A different take on the gyro so good, you can't eat the gyro closed. The wildcat burger is named after the town school mascot. If you may not be a chili cheese fries person, the fries are yummy whether they be with a burger or a sandwich. Gourmet chili is locally owned by a Greek family, in which the two brothers are the chiefs .The staff are friendly. They serve breakfast, lunch and diner. Stop in to see what their specials are. If you want a cup of coffee after bar closing time, they are open. Dont have time, just call ahead for carry out. The only downside is they do not have a credit or debit card machine. So bring cash. If you so happen to not have cash in your wallet, banks are down the same street not far from the restaurant. If parking is taken up on the street in front, feel free to park in a lot a few businesses down.

I'm torn because the service was wonderful but the product was lacking. The lady and gentleman at the front of the house were most kind but the chili was quite salty and definitely not the best around--especially with Dixie a block down the street.

We had to hit Gourmet Chili after reading the Yelp reviews (We often drive through NewPort). It is a neighborhood chili joint with the usual formica tables and filled with people from the neighborhood. My wife ordered a double decker with ham, bacon & egg, it was nice & thick and (she said) tasted great. I ordered the gyro and cheese omelet, it had a large portion of lamb on the inside and was covered with cheddar cheese on top (same cheese as the chili dishes). It is now on our list of good places to eat.

I love their 4.29 breakfast special. It is almost a once a week tradition.

Gourmet,... What can you say? This place is a hole in the wall but a really good hole. I love this place for some reason. It's old, smoky, filled with plenty of locals and family run. What more could you ask for in Newport. I mainly go here for their breakfast. They have a great breakfast special that is sure to leave you with a full belly. 3 eggs, hash browns and a slab of goetta. Plus they bring you about a half a loaf of bread that has been pre buttered. To top it off. A great cup of crappy coffee. Honestly I like the bad coffee. This place is also open almost 24-7. They only shut down for a few hours early in the morning. For lunch they have a great Gyro sandwich. The thing is packed. Ask them to add on some trademarked Cincinnati style shredded cheese and enjoy. I have been going to this place for years. Never actually tried the chili though. It's on the agenda. Be sure to bring cash. No plastic here.
