So after a blazing hot drive down from Indy with no a/c to visit the old homestead, and trying to use reverse psychology on myself to get cooled down, I figure what the hell. Let's get some hot coffee and sugary snacks!! If you've never been to the Cookie Jar Bakery before it sets right on Monmouth between 9th and 10th, and even if you've lived in NKY as I did, it took me several years before I knew this place existed. But once I did, boy was it ever on. Being an insomniac, the cookie jar has come to the rescue several times as they open at 3am on Saturday, Monday, and 1am Tuesday-Friday! What other bakery do you know in NKY where you can get doughnuts at those ungodly hours? The owner, Rick, is always there to greet yo with a smile in the morning and is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Now I can honestly say that the first time that I ever visited I got two yellow cake doughnuts with chocolate frosting and that's all I ever get because they are that good--rich buttery cake with a very deep, dark, chocolate frosting. So this time, like every other, I pack one in, holding the other 11, speeding away in the moonlight as Depeche Mode compliments the deep, dark, frosting and I cry because all I ever needed was here--in my arms.

I tried the Cookie Jar for the first time yesterday and was not disappointed! I had the glazed donut while my friend had a jelly filled donut, both were fresh and very tasty :) The service was quick and very courteous. The prices were also reasonable. I will come back!

Dashed in for a couple of M&M cookies for the kids after visiting the aquarium nearby. I can't vouch for the other offerings, but the cookies got a big thumbs up from my kids.

**** Cookie Monster Approved **** Do yourself and your friends/coworkers/kids/family a favor and swing by the Cookie Jar Bakery. I picked up a dozen cookies recently and it took everything in my power not to shove them all in face on the way home. They are THAT good. I'm going to have to go back and try the doughnuts which looked just amazing! I don't know if I'll be able to have any self control with those delightful treats. Parking is on street metered only. But if you push the button on the meter you do get 10 free minutes which should be enough to run in and grab a treat from the bakery and get back to your car in time. I didn't notice anywhere to sit and enjoy your treat inside so you'll just have to take it to go and try to not eat it all before you get home!

Cookie Jar Bakery leads my mind to think of an amazing wonderland of cookies and other assorted goodies, and I was disappointed to find that they only had a couple different types of cookies and some donuts in their display cases. In their defense they were closed on Sunday and we went in mid day on a Saturday so this is probably why. I'll have to go back and try them during their earlier hours when I can give them another shot. We tried some Santa Face cookies that were good and very cute, but I dunno.. I guess I just expected a little more. We got Mt. Dew's to go also and they both tasted flat but I figure most people don't go in there for the drinks.. LOL I'll definitely return, maybe next time I'll make it for some warm donuts :)

ORIGINAL ONE STAR RATING: I have a super craving for some yummy baked goods, but I can't have any dairy. I've heard so many good things about this bakery, but when I inquired about vegan/dairy free items they said they don't make them. Very disappointed that there wasn't even a single item I could eat. *Every other bakery I've been to has at least one lactose-free item available for those who can't consume dairy. EDITED - NEW 4 STAR RATING: Now that I am able to eat dairy products, I wanted to give them another try. So glad I did! I went all out and purchase an eclair (which weighed about a pound), these little frosted toast pieces, and a bag of shortbread tea biscuits with a drop of chocolate on top. The shortbread biscuits are the best I've ever had! They literally melted in my mouth. Generally, that isn't characteristic of those cookies. The little frosted toast pieces were incredibly tasty! I expected them to be stale from moisture, but they were still crisp and flaky even though we visited the bakery late afternoon. At $0.30 a piece I should have bought more! Last, but certainly not least, what can I say about the eclair other than that it was super heavy with cream and the pastry was to die for. It. Was. Incredible! So glad I'm able to have dairy because this little bakery is just great!

This place has the craziest hours! Maybe I need to come at a way earlier time of day to get a better selection. Like others have noted, there's not much variety during the afternoon hours. The employee was very friendly though and that will always encourage me to give a place a second chance. Plus I frequently see their coupons in the local Newport publications. I like when local businesses do that.

If it wasn't for the cute associate this place would have been an even worse disappointment. Cinnamon buns were good but all the donuts had an oven bake not a fresh fried quality. Empty shelves, and an empty kitchen should have been a clue. I still love and prefer local. Maybe it was a bad day.

Very yummy! From out of town and had some of their goodies prior to a show and very good stuff! Ridiculous that people give them a bad rating for not having Vegan choices or having a wide selection a few hours before closing. It is a bakery that has been around for 86 years. It is clear that they know what they are doing. Seriously complaining Vegan selections? Who goes to Taco Bell for a Big Mac? Highly recommend Cookie Jar just ignore the haters.

Finding a hidden treasure is exciting but finding a treasure that's right out on the open and you've been passing it for over a decade and you never saw it is frustrating. So my wife told me I needed to go buy doughnuts for a large group on Saturday morning and told me to go to the Cookie Jar on Monmouth. I've driven down that street plenty and never even noticed this place. There's not much to say besides: wonderful doughnuts, wonderful cookies and an old guy behind the counter that was friendly and when I asked the place told me the entire 85 year history. When you hear that my tailor is happy with the extra bucks I throw his way for letting out my pants in the coming months just know that it's the Cookie Jar's fault.

As a cookie enthusiast who's lived in Newport for well over a year, I thought I needed to remedy the fact that I had never been to this adorable bakery that I always pass on Monmouth. I went in one morning after I got out of work and boy am I glad that did! Upon entering, I was greeted with the most delicious combination of the smell of donuts and coffee. I went in for cookies but I was tempted by the cinnamon rolls, so I bought one to eat on the road. The cinnamon roll was small compared to some of the obnoxiously large cinnamon rolls I'm used to finding but it was very, very good and the perfect size for a snack. I bought two of each kind of cookie available and I was amused by the fact that they all tasted a bit like donut and my friend and I pondered whether or not they might have been cooked in the donut oil. However the cookies were prepared, they were very good. I ate half a dozen of them in one day. Perhaps the best part of my visit to the bakery was the service. The gentleman working was incredibly friendly and helpful and made me feel like a valued customer...the sort of attitude that makes me want to frequent a business.

An original, old-fashioned bakery using the same recipes for over 85 years. Everything is fresh and not made on a production-line; hence the different shapes/sizes. Very reasonable prices and charming atmosphere. You've got to check out the edible centerpiece of dinner rolls shaped into various objects for any occasion, ie: turkey for Thanksgiving. Also, the pumpkin pie is the best!

Excellent old-fashioned bakery. The delicious bread sells out VERY quickly but when I can grab a loaf, it's wonderful. I'm partial to the coconut rolls - they haven't changed since I was kid back in the 1960s. The donuts and crullers are good too, and I had an EXCELLENT coffee cake from there once too. Selection can be spotty since the baked goods are fresh and a lot of it is gone by noon.

Just a few doors down from Ebert's Meat Shop in Newport, the Cookie Jar is an old-fashioned bakery with cakes, cookies and pies. On a Saturday afternoon, the selection was fairly narrow, but I bought peanut butter and chocolate chip cookie varieties and both were sweet and delicious. The bakery offers special cupcake arrangements for the holidays and other items by special order.
