I'm from out of town so was really excited to try this place after a co-worker said it was excellent. Service was great, very reasonably priced and the food was good. So why 3 stats? Well, had the sliders (Pork and Brisket) wanted to try both meats and Mac and Cheese. The sliders were just the meat and a bun, which I would be ok with, if the meat had not been on the dry side. Even with the BBQ sauce, they just fell short of expectations. The Mac and Cheese seemed pretty standard. The cheese had that Velveeta consistency. Overall, If I wanted a good, quick, lunch I would choose this place again. Compared to fast food this place is excellent and really should be more like 3.5 starts because it's definitely above average but it's nothing to write home about. I've had better from a food truck :/

I've been here twice and LOVE the food. Service isn't always great (read: more often than not its slow) but after reading reviews of the first location, I anticipated that. The husband and I go because we love the food but we do know it probably isn't going to be the fastest meal. However, the fries and the mac 'n cheese totally make us for it. The first time we went, everyone got their own entree and we couldn't remotely finish it. The second time we split a slider entree and just added the fries and mac n' cheese and it was still too much. But it was really, really good.

Stopped in due to the buzz off the EatLoveLouisville Instagram account and we weren't disappointed. A friend and I both ordered the burnt ends, but they were out. The substitute food was great! I had the chicken sandwhich, fries and macaroni. The fries were probabably my favorite part. We had a two year old with us and it was disappointing how much food was wasted because we had to order and adult portion for her. We also ordered pickles and mustard and never received them. It was the lunch rush and there were only two servers working the entire place.

didn'y like the beef ribs and their brisket is dece but their pulled pork sliders, fries, and coleslaw are bomb

We returned to the Hurstbourne location tonight after about 5 months. Siena waited on us, she was super friendly and our service was outstanding!!! Food was still awesome. We will have to alternate locations now, so we can still see our friends at Bauer Avenue.

Since Momma's is close to my house, my boyfriend and I were excited to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised by the interior and decor- it's pretty cute inside! That's where the good ends... For appetizer, we ordered wings (which were recommended). We devoured them. Great flavor. Loved them.... Until we were both SO sick hours later, because I don't believe they were fully cooked. Neither of us can eat wings anymore :-/ The meal had good flavor, but mine came out cold. My side, I got the creamed corn, was literally so cold it could have been in a refrigerator before they brought it out. Good try Momma's but driving by just makes me sick to my stomach. We will not be back.

Amazing barbeque! I got the slider sampler, which let's you try all the different meats they offer. They also have some really good smoked wings. The famous pickles are really good, though they are sweet. Our server was very friendly and offered some great suggestions.

  • Babe l.

Amazing! They gave us free wings to sample which were the best ever. Sauces are perfect. Sides are large and just as good as the smoked meats.

  • Stephanie R.

The burnt ends are amazing. Even if you don't like spicy stuff I encourage you to try the hot BBQ sauce, it's delicious and much thicker than the regular. Be sure to get fries as the side because these are seriously the very best. Make sure to get a jar of pickles on your way out. They are $6, which is way more than I would normally spend but these are worlds better than any other pickles I have ever tasted. As for the service, the server as friendly and fast.

  • Vincent T.

The wings and the pickles are to die for. Surely some of the best I have had. The BBQ was good but in no way mind blowing. The bbq sauce was good but not the necessary unique or my favorite. The service was great. I would happily return.

Really great! Service was excellent about 8pm on a Saturday night. I had the turkey sandwich (hold the bun) with sides of beans (yummy with brisket in them), and seasoned fries. the inside of the restaurant is clean and modern. I was stoked to see Avalanche on tap. visiting from out of town, but if I lived close I would definitely be back. I also tasted their homemade mustard and pickle chips.

First of i don't like BBQ. It's not my favorite dish. But this place is an exception! We went there last Saturday and the place was crowded, we seated ourselves and the waiters quickly cleaned up our table. We did not expect to get fast service as we could see how crowded the place it, but the gal(s) worked very hard to get us taken care of - that's + point already me. Like I said, I am not a big fan of BBQ, but then I see it has Beef BBQ ribs on the menu - which is super rare and another + point to me! super excited we ordered one for us. My hub ordered half chicken and sliders for our son. But my wish of trying Beef Ribs BBQ gone when the waitress told us that they just served the very last one out! :( what a bummer! I just settled with the sliders for now - I thought. While waiting, a guy - whom then I learned the owner of the place, Chad - came around and apologizing for the delay and offered us some wings. Our food actually came in pretty decent time , at the same time the wings came - so to us, it wasn't that long at all (we've had worse!). and OMG. The wings are super delicious!! never had their kind of wings before. They are kind of dry-rub wings but the meat isn't dried at all and very very yummy! Not enough of the wings, Chad came back and brought us more free dish : macaroni & cheese and cheezy corn. For non-cheese lover like me and a non-goey food son, I was very skeptical that we would gonna like the dish at all. But we were absolutely wrong! Both dishes are super delicious, our son ate them all up! he did not even complain about the goey look like he usually does! We will come to this place again! that's for sure. Not only the food is great but the people who work there are wonderful as well!!

Really good BBQ. Tried brisket for the first time and it's made me a fan of it now. The hot sauce offers the smoky flavor of traditional BBQ sauce with a kick you feel on the back end. Try the green beans or the fries (THEY'RE SEASONED) and you won't regret one bite.

  • Angela M.

The grilled cheese with pulled pork was amazing! The fries are really good as well as the cheesy corn. Chicken wings were also very good! Waitresses and staff were very friendly and prices were great!

This place sucks!! If your looking for good BBQ do not go here. Their brisket is dry and the baby back ribs are not fresh.

  • Jordan M.

I really like Mama's. The location is certainly unsuspected. I have rarely seen it super crowded, even on the weekends, which is great if you're looking for a fast meal. The carry out service is good too. The food is awesome! I never had mustard and pickles until Mama's and now I can't imagine them any other way! Their wings are also delicious. They use a dry rub and they have a lot of meat on them. Yum! Don't let the odd location fool you. Eat at Mama's!

  • Craig E.

Some of the best Wings I've ever had!!! So good, I had to order some to go. Most of them didn't make it home either. The staff was great!! Thanks to Manager Chris for introducing me to the wings for sure!! The cheesy corn was great too!! Great service and a good selection of beers!! The dry rub was some of the best I've had. I'll be back to try some other things very soon!!! Thanks Mommas!!! You must check it out. Can't wait to try out their other location. Consider putting a location in Southern Indiana!! I can help find you a good location.

This place was AMAZING. We went on a Wednesday night at 7, walked right in and got a table and got out food within twenty minutes. Our waitress was incredibly friendly and we were discussing places me and my family had visited since we'd been in town. She helped us decide on a place for the next day as well. Our food was SO good. I got the chicken sliders and it was the best chicken slider I've ever had and some other family members had the beef sandwich and pork sliders and they said it was the best they'd ever had. The French fries were delish and the homemade Mac and cheese was incredible. A must stop BBQ restaurant in Louisville! Family friendly, excellent service and even better food!!

First time at momma's and we'll definitely be back! Great craft beer selection and delicious food. Our server was very friendly and helpful when it came to choosing our meals. Loved the pulled pork sandwich and their regular BBQ sauce was great. Get the mac and cheese as a side and you will not regret it!

food was fantastic! Great ribs that literally fall off the bone! Loved the hot BBQ SAUCE. Also the pickles are amazing! You can even bar a jar to take home. Great service and food was ready in 10 minutes.

We have been here several times. The food has never disappointed. The service on the other hand can be spotty. Tonight there were four staff and seven tables when we were there. We sat with our glasses empty for a while and others sat without being greeted. If the service would improve, I think the volume of guests would as well. Anyway, great place with great food!

Had a better experience at the St. Matthews location - both foodwise and servicewise. Underwhelming all around. May go back to St. Matthews location just for the wings though.

Was visiting from out of town. My husband and I are foodies, read the reviews and decided to stop in. Good food. Not great food but it was good. I ordered the burnt ends mac n cheese and fries. Fries were heavily seasoned they were not bad but not special. Mac and cheese was good the cheese was sauce based not my favorite style but still had good flavor. The burnt ends were tender, full of smoked flavor, and pair nicely with bbq sauce on the table. The sauce had good flavor but was a bit thin and runny. My husband liked his brisket just fine and said the potatoe salad reminded him of old school with the skin on the potaoes large chunks of onion. He liked it overall.

Jamie is awesome she deserves employee of the month and a big fat raise! I don't ever want anyone else to wait on us!

Try the wings. Brisket is also really good. They were out of Burnt Ends. But what I tried was all good. I would come back. Service is a bit slow though and they need to add platters to their menu.

  • Mary-Hollis H.

We ordered takeout and almost had to go back and return some of it we were so disappointed. This was the worst brisket I have ever had. It was tough and thin like roast beef, obviously cooked too quickly and too hot. There was no fat or marbling... so so bad. Just not brisket at all. And very expensive. On the other hand, the sides were all amazing! Special shout out to the mac n cheese and baked beans. The turkey was also pretty good. I don't think we'll be returning as you're supposed to go to a BBQ joint for meat! And just, no. No way.

  • Rick M.

The wings are indeed great. Rubbed smoked and fried, they are almost perfect. The ribs are also pretty good. The seasoned rub is a really nice salt sugar and a bit of onion garlic and celery flavor. The smoke they lay on is about perfect. My only problem is the sauce. The hot is not. The other unlabeled sauce pretty much tastes the same. The meat stands on it own so this is not a huge complaint. I do like a little heat and vinegar to compliment the meat and fat. The fries are really good. Very crispy outside with a nice tender inside. They kept there crunch even after sitting for half an hour. The baked beans with peppers was also very good. Sweetness from peppers as opposed to a lot of brown sugar kept them from being too overly sweet. Highly recommend. Great beer selection also.

While it's not my favorite BBQ, it's definitely up there. As soon as you walk in to this place you're hit with a BBQ aroma like no other. The atmosphere seems basic & slightly unique. There are pictures of a former Derby horse (Mucho Macho Man). Either the restaurant owners are part owners or they just really love that horse! I did love how they have mason jars over all the lights throughout the restaurant! Whether a star is added or removed in the future will depend largely on my next visit. Next visit will be the smoked wings & ribs visit. As for this visit... there were good & bad things(Mostly good). I decided on the brisket sandwich. My 2 sides were double fries. Let me start off by saying those are some of the best fries from a place like this that I've ever had. Not too salty! A lot of places try to cover up their fry taste with salt & seasoning. At Momma's I could still taste the potato & it was delicious! No ketchup needed! The brisket on the other hand was a slight miss. It was tasty, but it was a little too dry. That was fixed by drenching it in sauce. The sauce? Hot & Regular on the table. I'm not sure if someone filled the flavors incorrectly, but the hot on my table wasn't hot at all. My date had the pulled pork sandwich along with mashed potatoes & green beans as her side. Green beans good. Mashed potatoes tasted more like instant potatoes. I can't confirm that, but it was a disappointing taste. The pulled pork? I think that's some of the best pulled pork I've ever had! Juicy! Tasty with & without sauce. I've never had a sweet tasting pork like that! I'll definitely order the pulled pork over the brisket when I go back. This place adds 1% surcharge to your order that they match & donate to a list of local organizations. I like the way they've implemented the system. You can check their website to see where the money is going. I have to ask... where are the pickles?! I know there are jars of pickles here that you can buy because there are pictures on the Yelp page & I've heard people talk about them. No pickle items on the menu & the waitress didn't mention them. I also didn't see jars sitting anywhere. With a name like Momma's Mustard, PICKLES & BBQ I expected more pickles! At least add fried pickles as an appetizer! C'mon Momma! I'll definitely stop in when I'm in that part of town. I'm not sure if it'd be my first choice for BBQ, but it's definitely an option. If you're picking up lunch on your own then the value is there.

When family comes in from out of town and wants BBQ, we always take them to Marks Feed Store. It's good, service is good, it's a no brainer. But then Momma's showed her beautiful face and I can't even remember who Mark is. Yes, we were that blown away! The green beans "were the best" my husband has had. The pulled pork was the best I've ever had; so soft and full of flavor. And the grilled cheese ...oh, the ooey-gooey brisket grilled cheese with melty white cheddar and havarti had the my man shaking his head like "omg, really? This is ridiculous" with every bite. Go. Eat. And leave very, very happy.

  • B B.

The pulled pork is very good. Love the pickles (sweet). The mustard is spicy. The little sliders are great for sharing. As far as the side items go I do Not suggest the mashed potatoes. Both bean selections are fair. Service is good.

I went to Momma's BBQ after hearing nothing but great reviews. I had high expectations for this restaurant but unfortunately it didn't live up to them. First of all I would like to say that our waitress was absolutely phenomenal! She seemed to be the only waitress there and there was a full house. She did her best to take care of everyone's needs and was very friendly and it was sad to see the place so understaffed. After we ordered our food, it took forever for our order to come out. When our food finally did come out, we were not impressed. I ordered the ribs with fries. The fries were seasoned and tasted great but the ribs were nothing to write home about. We also ordered the brisket and by the time it came out it was cold. We had ordered two sides of honey mustard, one for a salad and another for fries, and they only had enough for one which I found very surprising since we got there an hour after they opened. Overall, I wasn't satisfied with my experience here. It's hard to believe that a place with such great reviews was very lacking in person.

This place is great! I love BBQ and I've been to enough places around the country to know good BBQ. I got the brisket with macaroni and cheese, slaw, and green beans. The brisket was lean and tender, the slaw was creamy, the green beans were great and my God - the macaroni and cheese was Heavenly. It was stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth good. The sauces were good but I wish there were more choices. And I missed corn bread. The service was good and the atmosphere was laid back. I can't believe I haven't tried it before! I'll definitely be back.

My husband heard from his coworker that this place had the best wings ever so we came to try it. So we came here on a Thursday afternoon. There were quite a few people there but we got seated immediately. The waiter was real nice and ordered our meal in an appropriate amount of time. We ordered 20 wings and a brisket slider. The food came out within 15 min. The wings were pretty good, but not good enough for me to come back. The slider was not that great. The meat was very dry and hard. Oh and the server never really came back to see if we needed anything until someone told him that we wanted our check. I don't know if I'll be coming back here. The food was decent, and so was the service. I might get the wings to go.

  • Dung T.

The "Best Wing Ever" were really good, no sauce was needed but even better with the hot bbq and the cheezy corn was amazing. The brisket were a little dry so we had to use sauce to make it better. The only disappointing thing was that I came to try their ribs and they were completely out of both the beef and pork, kind of hard to believe that a bbq place not having ribs lol, but they must be that good. And they also had a problem with their ice maker so drinks weren't nice and cold.

I was in town for a visit and was specifically looking for good BBQ. I found this location based on Yelp reviews. Walking in the door I was meet with the aroma of smoked BBQ that is a sign of a place that takes it seriously. The menu is small but covers all of the important BBQ items. It has been awhile since I've had beef ribs, so I took the opportunity to try them here. Sides are a la carte and I chose an order of baked beans. The order came with two ribs that were very meaty. The beans were good and had a nice BBQ flavor. Two sauces are served, a hot and a mild. I would have liked a little more heat in the hot choice. I mixed the hot with the mild to cut the sweetness of the mild sauce. I found the beef ribs to be a little dry, but adding sauce helped. I would have liked the bark on the ribs to be more crispy. The servers are very attentive and provide great service. I will try the other items on a future trip.

Mamas has a charge on your bill for a charity. You can not opt. out of the charge you have to pay it. Deal breaker for me. Will not dine again at this place . Zero star. Wait staff bad manager with poor skills. I was upset that it was on bill and I did not know until the bill came. If I was asked instead of told I would probably want to give. I believe it is not legal to make someone give. I am going to find out. I am going to call Attorney General Office today.

I'm a fan of BBQ, but by no means and expert, and I only rarely seem to ever choose any restaurant specifically because I'm craving it. I chose Momma's more because I wanted to try somewhere new and had heard about it. Thinking back, I honestly can't recall whether what I'd heard was positive or negative. Guess that says something for name/brand recognition, huh? We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door by a server who was already taking an order at another table. We grabbed our own seat and our server was at the table within a couple of minutes. Not only our own server, but others throughout the joint talked to us - they were all very nice, open, and friendly. The atmosphere is absolutely nothing special - gloss wood tables and bar with a few televisions at the bar. I did think it was kind of cool that the owner had framed the silks of Mucho Macho Man (a racehorse with the same owner) from several of his more prominent races. Apparently the owner used some of their winnings from the horse to open the restaurant - interesting story. I had to order the ribs because...well, I guess just because I was sick of nothing but health food for several weeks and what better way to blow all of that hard work in a single meal than some good BBQ ribs? The steak fries were good, but the ribs were incredible! Perfectly seasoned and cooked, these were very generous portions for a reasonable price. I was actually able to put my fork into the meat, just gently tug the bone, and it would slide completely and easily out, leaving a large chunk of juicy meat. Like I said, I'm a fan of BBQ, but I'm definitely no expert - I probably couldn't point out anything that distinguishes Momma's, FABD, or several other BBQ restaurants recipes from one another. But that said, this place is definitely spectacular food and friendly service.

You know you are in for a treat when a waiter at a restaurant recommends that you go try a completely different restaurant.....and that's how I came across Momma's Mustard. This location is very unassuming in a small strip with a modest "Momma's BBQ" in lettering above the entrance. The inside is relatively small, but very clean and simple and features a nice bar (solid craft beer selection on tap) among the 15 or so tables. A restaurant has to be confident in their wings when they are simply listed as BEST WINGS EVER with no other details on the menu. I am happy to report this is an accurate description. Momma's is my new King of Wings. Very smoky with a quick fry for crispness and sweet/spicy dry rub. Putting sauce on these wings would be a sin. Worth the $1+/wing price. I also enjoyed a half rack of the pork ribs. Although they were extremely black on the outside, they were fall-off-the-bone juicy. Only average item that I tried was the side of mac and cheese. I could take it or leave it. Momma's is a must visit if you are in the Louisville area. Can't wait for my next trip back.

This restaurant should be rated higher than it is. I don't have a dog in the Louisville BBQ fight but I was stuck on this side of town for a week while traveling and went to the higher rated Mark's Feed Store first because of some of the negative reviews for this place. (Come on Yelp Louisville. You let me down.) Mark's is average chain level bbq. There is definitely a made from scratch feel to Momma"s place. As I ate there today I found myself getting angry at some of the reviews that I read. When things are made from scratch they aren't always perfect. You don't refuse to eat with your mother again because she put too much onion in the potato salad one time. When you cook cuts of meat like ribs and brisket it is easier to get it wrong than right. They are tough dry meats to begin with. There are countless bbq completions where expert crews work all day to produce just five perfect bites and they frequently fail. This place has a simple menu with some specialty items. Sides appear to be made from scratch and the food I had was properly prepared and very tasty. If you are looking for bbq in this area, I would try this one.

Great wings, dry rubbed not sauced , smoked not baked and served at 10 for $10. Got these to go, warmed at home in oven at 450 for 8 min with house hot B B Q Sauce poured over them. Great service and very clean facility probably the best wings in the county

Must try the wings; they are AMAZING! Pulled pork is awesome, and the hot BBQ sauce is best I've ever had. Cole slaw is delicious...Great food. Fast and friendly service. Our server, Jamie, is always awesome, attentive, and remembers our order. :)

These were the best wings I've ever had! Dry rub, no says needed, bit even ranch. Mac & cheese was ok. Cheesy corn was good. They were out of ice and ribs when we were there, crazy right. Didn't effect me though I had ice cold Stella Artois, 3 of them and got to keep the Derby 141 glass it came in. I didn't like where we were sitting, didn't know that door opened and a lot of the outside came inside, heat, bugs, smoke and smells. Would definitely recommend

So we just moved here and for our first meal we went to Mama My family all orders the baby backs They were so dry that our server could see there was a problem. She was super and brought Us another ordr of ribs. They were a little better but not that much better It almost seemed like they were from earlier in the day sitting under a heat lamp. We paid our server and gave her a nice tip because she deserves it and did all she could We will not be returning

After hearing so much about this place, I was really prepared for it to unseat Frankfort Avenue Beer Depot as my favorite BBQ spot. While it was good, it was definitely not as good as Beer Depot. Things I loved: -the wings! Wings are not usually even something I order but we were talked into them and I'm so glad we listened. They really were some of the best I've ever had. Sweet and spicy, and I loved that they were not saucy. - the concept of grilled cheese with pulled pork! What the what? I was unsure when our awesome waitress explained that we could order the grilled cheese with any of the meat choices but I went with it because, why not? It was so good. - the service! Everyone was really nice and had lots of suggestions. Things I wasn't crazy about: - the actual sauces. I really didn't like either of the sauces, which honestly, is why this can't be my favorite place despite the food being good. - the pickles. I should have asked if the pickles were dill or sweet when our waitress raved about them. I was so excited when she was talking about how good they are because I love dill pickles and that's what I was expecting. I really dislike sweet pickles and these were no exception, especially because pickled onion were mixed in. My husband ate both of our servings. - the sides. I had mac n cheese and fries, and while both were fine, neither particularly wowed me. I've had better versions of both at other places. Ultimately, this is definitely a place worth trying and I'd be fine going back -- I'd probably just get wings though. And this won't be a place that I crave or think of when I really want BBQ.

Went with a friend today for lunch because we had heard so much about it and wasn't disappointed...the food is definitely legit! The service wasn't great, I will give them credit that it was a lunch rush and they seemed to be super short staffed. They were already out of the burnt ends, but the server suggested the brisket grilled cheese which was wonderful. They don't have a kids menu and the portions for smaller children are enough for an adult...aside from that based on food alone I would revisit...

I was disappointed by this place after reading all the good reviews. I was visiting from out of town and came here on a Tuesday night for dinner. Service: It didn't look too busy but maybe they were understaffed that night. Our server was seemed rushed and hurried with our order. Once our food arrived I don't think our server came back once to check on us. We didn't get our side of pickles and had to flag down another server to bring them for us. Then we had to flag down another girl to get our drinks refilled, she said I'm not your server, but still brought us drinks, however she brought us two Cokes (I was drinking iced tea and my friend a diet). We didn't make a big deal about it, she seemed frazzled enough. Food: Pickles were good! I could eat those all day. I got a slider sampler so I could try the different meats. I took a bite of the brisket sandwich and thought the bread was stale and dry but at least the brisket was good. Then I look and see that there's a mold patch on my bread. Gross! I ended up just eating the meat and calling it a day. Sorry, will not be returning or recommending to this location.

My fiance (yep, he finally did it!), his family, and I came here on Monday to celebrate his birthday. We started with the smoked chicken wings which were amazing. Seriously so, so good! We also got a ramekin of pickles which my fiance and I loved but no one else did because the rest of the table isn't much for sweet pickles. For my entree I chose the burnt ends with mac n' cheese and green beans. The burnt ends were good - nice and fatty, and the mac n' cheese and green beans were great as well. My fiance tried the slider sampler and he liked all of the meats but I did not care for the sausage one bit. It was like Italian sausage with way too much fennel - kind of odd for a barbeque joint. All in all, I liked Momma's. I don't know that I would make a special trip here but if I'm in the area again, I'd stop by.

Absolutely amazing! Had the best half chicken dinner ever. It was cooked perfectly! Smoked with a delicious rub and then flash fried in peanut oil to bring out an amazing flavor. I put the mild bbq sauce on it and it was absolutely amazing. Then the sides were just as good. I had the potato salad and baked beans. Both were great but the potato salad may be my new favorite over Red, Hot & Blues which I love. To end it all off, the service was great and the place was very clean. Try it!

I've been taking some time to acclimate to a new job so I haven't written lately, but it being a lazy afternoon and having the opportunity to bust out a few reviews, I believe I'll start with a very good one. Momma's popularity has spiked since I first wrote a review on their Bauer Ave location off Frankfort Ave, so much so it seems they've opened another location off Hurstbourne Lane near Shelbyville Rd, in a little strip near Cirilla's. Despite the signage simply saying "MOMMA'S BBQ" in the same font as their neighbor (except bold), this is the same group. It's not a location that screams BBQ joint, not like that unassuming house on Bauer, but they've done some nice work on the interior to give it a similar feel at least to the downstairs of the original: some Derby memorabilia celebrating a certain win, copper sheeting on the back wall, wood & brick everywhere else and a nice long bar with plenty of beer choices. Be sure to pick a booth if you go as the cushions are just awesome, is that memory foam? Anyhow, to the food. It was just as good. Amazing smoked wings spiced in a manner that I just sat there and tried to figure out everything that went into that dry rub. I had my boys along, and they too, just marveled at how good the wings were. My youngest had the slider sampler and they too, were very good. My oldest had a grilled cheese with brisket, mac & cheese and mashed potatoes. He said everything was awesome. The brisket so tender it seemed to meld with the cheese and the mac and cheese was terrific, the mashed potatoes obviously homemade. I settled on some burnt ends, cole slaw and baked beans because I can't imagine eating BBQ without those 2 sides and, of course, all good. The cole slaw crunchy, not super sweet and a little spicy, the beans by themselves were not my all-time favorite but a good pairing when mixed with the smoky burnt ends. All in all, a really great meal all-around, minus a star because the location doesn't live up to the original, but if you're looking for some of Momma's BBQ and are unable to find a seat at Bauer Ave, be sure to call over to the east end and see if they've got an opening there, because the food is just as yum. Now if they'd only venture to the south end...

You NEED to go here. Seriously, drop what you're doing and check this place out! You walk in and the smell makes your mouth water. The hubs and I needed some food to take back home for lunch and I wish we would have just ordered the whole menu. Hubby got the brisket sandwich and wouldn't even let me have a bite because it was so good. I got the pulled pork and it comes with bbq sauce and pickles (YUM!) which hit the spot. Now, I like to judge places by their sides, and these people pay close attention to them. The green beans, of all things, were amazingly seasoned and I didn't even need to put salt on them. The mac and cheese was sooooo creamy and cheesy and just yum! Will for sure be going back here and I've been trying to tell everyone I can about it!

This was my first visit to mamas. I went with my family for Sunday lunch. Positives- informal, a nice atmosphere. The waitress was very nice and accommodating. As far as the food was concerned, I enjoyed the green beans and sampled my daughters french fries which were good. Negatives- it took a while to get food and the check. They seemed to be understaffed. My brisket was cold and I didn't care for their barbecue sauce.

The chicken wings are the best thing here. However, the service is so horrible it overcasts the food.

A-MAZ-ING. The wings are the best I've ever had. My mouth waters just thinking of them. They make B-Dubs look like McDonald's -- and that's saying something since I love me some B-Dubs. Also, the pulled pork grilled cheese belongs in The Louvre; it's a work of art. This is a MUST visit for anyone in Louisville, whether you be a travel or resident.

Oh My GOSH!!!!! THIS is great food!! I found this place (with the help of yelp) while planning a ladies' weekender trip. The reviewers were great - but my foodie friends and I would be the judges with the final word. WOW! GREAT stuff!! So much food that we had to take doggie bags back to the hotel for midnight snacks. And the next day we circled back to pick up jars of mustards and pickles for our families at home. (Would have taken home a vat of mac and cheese if I could!!) My daughter LOVED the burnt ends and slaw...she said they were heaven! I had the pulled pork, beans, and mac and cheese....STILL dreaming of them. (Why must Louisville be a place I only get to a few times a year???) Make this one of your MUST TRYS!!!

Likely my favorite new place I've tried in months. I had the burnt ends, green beans and fries. Loved everything, tried the Mac and cheese from another meal and found that to be pretty good too. They don't skimp on the portions at all, I left feeling very full. I liked the bbq sauce they had, hot wasn't really spicy for me, but had good flavor. Service was excellent, we were a group of 14 and all got food within 1/2 hour. I was super happy to see they used compostable straws and to go containers and every purchase has a 2% charity donation added. Such a great idea! I'll absolutely be back.

Tried this place based on the good reviews. I'd say...it was fine. I'll admit I'm hard to impress with BBQ. However, I did give it 4 stars because it's good, just not blow-your-mind good. I had the burnt ends with mac 'n cheese and baked beans. The burnt ends were ordered on recommendation from the server, and left me wishing I had just ordered the pulled pork sandwich like I had intended. (Which my husband had and was very tasty). They were just kinda tough and dry. The mac 'n cheese was creamy yet a big runny. The bakes beans were my favorite part of the meal. Very flavorful and had small bits of their pork mixed in. Next time I'd like to try the other location for comparison.

When I take my wife to a BBQ place, I only eat brisket, as I don't care for anything else on the menu. This was our first visit and probably my last. After we placed our order we were told a few minutes later that they had just given out the last of the brisket, so all I got was the two sides I had ordered. The Mac and Cheese was uninspired and nearly tasteless. The potato salad had overpowering bits of onion in every bite to the point where it could have been justifiably called onion salad. Place is extremely noisy and conversation is difficult. Service was ok, waitress was fine and she did try to make things right, but it wasn't her fault they ran out of what I ordered. I probably won't be back.

Guy Fieri voice: "OUT. OF. BOUNDS!!" This place has the bomb BBQ, seriously. We've been 3 times now, once to the St. Matthews location and twice to the new Hurstbourne location, and every visit the food was on point. So far I've tried the sausage, the wings, the pulled pork and the brisket. I really want to try the ribs and the burnt ends but the other stuff is so good I just keep ordering the same thing. The pulled pork is honestly the best I've ever had...both the texture and the smoky flavor. The brisket is juicy and not dry. The wings are dry rubbed and smoked which is good if you are looking for something a little different than most of the restaurants around here serve. They serve the food with these little slider buns, I like to pile on some pulled pork and brisket and then top it off with their bbq sauce and mustard...they pretty much just melt in your mouth. The only reason I deduct a star is the sides could maybe use a little work. The beans are great, they have big chunks of meat in them, but the mashed potatoes and mac and cheese are just a little bit plain. I think if they just kicked these up with some bolder flavors it would really make a big difference and the place would be the total package on food. Also would be cool if they had a couple of additional bbq flavors. Still...that being said, my wife has never like ANY bbq restaurant and Momma's made her a bbq fan, which I consider to be an impressive feat. The Hurstbourne location doesn't really have the rustic appeal of the St. Matthews location, but they did a really nice job fixing up the space they had to work with. its got a nice little bar with some good beers on tap. Honestly i don't really care about that, I'm just glad there's a location closer to my house in an area dominated by chain restaurants. If you live in the Middletown or Hurstbourne area do yourself a favor and check this place out. Oh and by the way its a good value too, they pile up the meat, you will have leftovers.

Really great bbq. Nice selection of craft beers, and a nice atmosphere. Some of the better wings I've ever had (great run on them), and was very pleased with the burnt ends. I've had better versions of the sides I ordered (green and baked beans), but they were still solid. I'll definitely return.

Given the other reviews my family and I must have visited on an off night, but I can only rate based in my experience and hope the restaurant sees this and makes some changes. First, the wait staff was rather off putting. First, we asked if they had a kids menu and the response was, "Actually, we don't" followed by her turning around and walking off. We had to ask for refills on drinks. The wrong sides were delivered to the table and it took three tries before the correct items were brought to us. We forgot to order the pickles while eating, so I went to the bar while we were walking out to get some to go. There were four other people at the bar, but it still took five minutes to be acknowledged. After ordering another ten minutes went by before another lady asked me if I had been helped. I explained that I had ordered pickles to go. She left to check on it. After another five minutes of waiting I just got up and left. It was pretty ridiculous to have to wait so long for some pickles. It's a shame. I wanted to try them. Second, the food was... Meh. Unimpressive, really. I had the burnt ends, which lacked the finish you expect of burnt ends. They were chewy, dry, had very little bark, and zero sauce. I get that there is sauce on the table, but burnt ends finished properly should come to the table with moisture - either from fat or baked-on sauce or both. We tried the Mac and cheese and their corn and cheese. Both seemed to just either be cooked macaroni or corn mixed with melted Velveeta. Nothing to write home about.

By far the best BBQ I have ever tasted. I got the pulled pork sandwich with a side of mac and cheese and baked beans. Everyone at out table of 12 was so into their food that it was silent. Everyone left satisfied. The staff made us feel welcome and the food was out of this world. What more can you ask for? I HIGHLY recommend this place!

Picked up a go order wanted cold slab of pork ribs & 4 rib beef. $24 Slab of Baby back way past done & very salty. Beef 4 rib piece pricey at 28 bucks but they were excellent! Great flavor & tender would order again In a heartbeat. Beans were good & spicy, Mac & cheese a tad mediocre. $77 w tip for the fast & informative service will go again.

I had multiple people tell me how awesome the wings were at Momma's. I tried them last week for the first time. They were great! Dry rubbed barbecue flavor. Juicy and flavorful. Hard to describe everything about them. You have to get over there to try them. I want to try the other stuff, just not sure if I could go in there without getting the wings.

I will start by saying the food is great. The pulled pork sandwich my wife had was tender and the wings were smokey goodness. The atmosphere is comfortable and plenty of TV's for the sports fans. Not at all bar food. I could not give more than 2 stars because of the service. We were looking for a relaxing dinner after a long snowy work week. Carley was our server who started out courteous, but when there was issue with an over charge on our check, she had a complete meltdown and ignored use for 20 minutes when we tried to pay and finally leave the awkward situation. Very unfortunate Good luck if you get Carley as your server.

Tonight was our second visit. First visit was ok. Tonight however, was enough to make sure we don't return. First problem, out of ribs!!! Really! It wasn't even 6pm yet! When 5 of the 6 meals we ordered came, after quite a long wait, the pulled pork in the sandwiches was almost room temp. The 6th meal came after 10 minutes. It wasn't difficult, pulled pork sandwich, potato salad and green beans, 10 minutes!?!? Our server should have done so much more to help the situation. The front and back of the house needs help.

A far cry from the St. Matts establishment. No charm and no service. Sat at a table for 10 mins without any server so much as making eye contact despite trying to flag them down. We eventually left and ate at macaroni grill. So disappointed, never going to this location again but will still go to the St. Matts restaurant when we are around that area, those people are great there.

I've never actually taken the time to review anything online before, but these wings are worth me taking the time out of my day to figure out how this whole crazy Internet thing works so that I can inform the masses as to how spectacular these wings are. Dry rubbed, smoked, and flash fried. No need for sauce but a little bit of the hot bbq sauce goes a long way if a little heat is your thing. Sides were great. Very good potato salad. Would have given five stars but the brisket was on the dry side. Probably wouldn't recommend it. Great food (other than dry brisket), great value, friendly service. Well worth a stop by...don't let the bland exterior fool you, you won't regret it.

Hands down the best BBQ in Louisville, but the service is poor. I've tried every meat and loved them all. The sides are great and the wings are worth the trip alone, but every time I've been in, and that is frequently, it seems like it's taken an inordinate amount of time. Most of the those times it hasn't been the kitchen's fault. We were either waiting for our orders to be taken, drinks, or our check. The wait staff is nice enough, but it seems like there are not enough of them. This place could really be improved with one or two more waiters on the floor. Wish I could rate it higher, but the service is lacking. Definitely try this place if you've got over an hour to burn.

Had burnt ends and parts that where crispy where very good to supliment they added cubed brisket which needed some sauce. Wife had nice salid with chichen which she liked. Portions larger than normal which explains few bucks extra on price.

The food was excellent. I had the smoked chicken!! YUM!!! Best chicken I have ever had!!!! Service was excellent as well!! I think our servers name was Carly, she went over and above to make our experience even better! I would give this a 100% on service and food!! One of my favorites!! Will definitely dine again!!

Great wings, dry rubbed not sauced , smoked not baked and served at 10 for $10. Got these to go, warmed at home in oven at 450 for 8 min with house hot B B Q Sauce poured over them. Great service and very clean facility probably the best wings in the county

No way.

Love some much! Pork is fabulous! Best Mac/Cheese in town! Catered several lunches I have had the pleasure to enjoy! Nothing negative from me! Slider samples .. yum!!!

The wings and the pickles are to die for. Surely some of the best I have had. The BBQ was good but in no way mind blowing. The bbq sauce was good but not the necessary unique or my favorite. The service was great. I would happily return.

Try it!

Amazing! They gave us free wings to sample which were the best ever. Sauces are perfect. Sides are large and just as good as the smoked meats.

We returned to the Hurstbourne location tonight after about 5 months. Siena waited on us, she was super friendly and our service was outstanding!!! Food was still awesome. We will have to alternate locations now, so we can still see our friends at Bauer Avenue.

Try the wings. Brisket is also really good. They were out of Burnt Ends. But what I tried was all good. I would come back. Service is a bit slow though and they need to add platters to their menu.

  • Darrell H.

  • Darrell H.

We returned to the Hurstbourne location tonight after about 5 months. Siena waited on us, she was super friendly and our service was outstanding!!! Food was still awesome. We will have to alternate locations now, so we can still see our friends at Bauer Avenue.

Good is awesome and always the same with each visit. Best wings in Louisville! Had great service at this location.

Had the burnt ends! They were legit! Their fries are the bomb.com especially dipped in their homemade ranch. I will be back!!!

  • Ed B.

Had burnt ends and parts that where crispy where very good to supliment they added cubed brisket which needed some sauce. Wife had nice salid with chichen which she liked. Portions larger than normal which explains few bucks extra on price.

The pulled pork is very good. Love the pickles (sweet). The mustard is spicy. The little sliders are great for sharing. As far as the side items go I do Not suggest the mashed potatoes. Both bean selections are fair. Service is good.

  • Stephon S.

Try it!

The wings and the pickles are to die for. Surely some of the best I have had. The BBQ was good but in no way mind blowing. The bbq sauce was good but not the necessary unique or my favorite. The service was great. I would happily return.

Amazing! They gave us free wings to sample which were the best ever. Sauces are perfect. Sides are large and just as good as the smoked meats.
