We are so glad to have this addition to our neighborhood. While everyone else is probably coming here for gyros and hummus and the usual Greek fare, I will be in the corner eating all the pasta. I was introduced to Chef Maria's cooking through her Spicy Pepperoni Lasagna, and it was one of the most sublime things I've eaten. Try it! You'll be happy. And possibly stuffed. During this visit Maria came out to dance with my 6 year old daughter, who then enjoyed the chocolate baklava and declared it her favorite. We ordered kids food, but they ignored their plates and ate off of ours for the most part. The chicken fingers are hand cut and very lightly breaded, and nicely seasoned. The pizza pita was odd-more like a pita pocket sandwich with American cheese, pepperoni and sauce. My daughter was not impressed but the 2 year old took some bites.

Dinner tonight on a business trip, staying nearby. Great casual neighborhood place but also worth a drive. Home cooked Greek specialties, very good wine and beer menu, wonderful desserts, and nice interior and wonderful patio (although it was too hot tonight). A solid 4 star but would need to try some more dishes before I give it a 5. Very good value.

We tried Chef Maria's tonight. We chose to eat outside because it was actually cooler than inside...did not appear to have A/C. The patio was nice and very shaded. First of all the menu online is totally different from the menu when we got there. The menu onsite was much smaller (I was disappointed with that.) We started off with hummus. There wasn't enough pita bread...but the waitress did bring us more. For our main dish we tried the gyro dinner, the shrimp pasta, the chicken kabobs, and pork loin. The gyro was good but not my favorite in the city. The chicken kabobs were good but had way to much rosemary. They gave you the pita and toppings to make it a gyro as well (only with chicken) but the piece of chicken were a little big for that. The taziki sauce was very good (I could have eaten more of that for sure!) The waitress did not ask me what side I wanted so I ended up with the potatoes. They were okay but I think I would have rather had the rice or fries with it. The pork loin was dry in my opinion but my husband really enjoyed it. The shrimp dish was shrimp (with the tails still on) and green peppers and onions and marinara. I wasn't impressed with that dish either. I didn't dislike what we had but I didn't love it either. I really prefer Aladdin's cafe for my gyro's!

I have and will always have a soft spot in my heart for Old Louisville. The architecture, the history, Central Park, St. James Court -- it's so quintessentially Louisville. But my one complaint from when I lived there -- aside from the whole "Get off my lawn" feeling brought on by the large amount of neighboring college students -- is that there wasn't much in the way for food, shopping or entertainment (except for the first weekend in October, that is). Happily this seems to be changing, and Chef Maria's Bistro is the latest in this resurgence. I got to check out this new eatery just before the end of their soft opening today. And I will definitely be back. But first, let's talk about how lucky Old Louisville is in getting Chef Maria Bell as a new neighbor. Chef Bell is originally from Greece, and after running into her at several events -- Yelp and otherwise -- let me just say that I don't think I've ever seen her not smiling. She is full of energy, and you can tell she is passionate about the food from her heritage. And the food is good. I ordered a lamb gyro to-go today at about 3:30 p.m. I think it was the biggest gyro I've eaten. I'm still full, and it's now just after midnight. The gyro came with large pieces of tomato and onion, seasoned with spices, and sliced rotisserie lamb. It was lean and had a bit of a well seasoned kick to it. All of this was then stuffed in a pita with tzatziki sauce. This gyro was legit and, again, substantial. Other items on the menu that I'm looking forward to trying include: * Pastitsio, a pasta casserole; * dolmadakia (I'm a huge fan of stuffed grape leaves.); * "Fire Feta Cheese" * Lamb Shank "Youvetsi" with orzo; * the shrimp pita. I'm saving my fifth star for a return visit, which isn't far off. Also, when you go, be sure to check out Chef Maria's Bistro's large patio. This will be divine in the spring and summer.

I love her personality, and the food is spot on. The grape leaf rolls were sooooo fresh. It was amazing.

Great place to grab a casual lunch/dinner. The owner and staff really put their heart into the place. Option of patio dining, bar dining, or dining room. Love the "small" plates (but big enough for 3 people). Great selection of food and drinks.

Amazing authentic Greek food. The menu was varied enough to provide something for most interests but not so extensive that it was overwhelming. The grilled octopus, tomato mozzarella dip, and the Zorba gyro were all fantastic. The chef (Maria) is lovely, the atmosphere was cozy but not cramped (outdoor space looked great too), and the service was the BEST we have ever experienced in this town (professional, attentive without breathing down your neck, and friendly).

This place so so charming. The friendly service and amazing, authentic Greek food truly make this place worth coming back. Chef Maria and her brother make me smile, and so does the food. I love the falafel, and the traditional gyro is probably the best I've ever had. The patio is the perfect place to enjoy a summer evening. I'm so sad they stopped serving lunch, though!

My friend and I have been wanting to check this new spot out in our hood for a while now. We finally made it over there one evening for drinks and a snack. This patio is FANTASTIC! It is everything you could ever ask for in a restaurant patio. It's big, well lit, sits back from the road, has pretty plants to look at and lots of tables! You almost forget you are in the busy Old Louisville neighborhood. The staff working this particular night were super friendly and helpful in selecting a bottle of wine to split. We went with a bottle of white wine from Greece. It was reasonably priced in the low 20s. We both enjoyed the taste and would order it again. We decided to share an order of the hummus and also some grape leaves. The hummus was not the usual consistency and flavor that I am used to having. I was not completely impressed by it but would try it again to see if it was different or the same. It was a bit bland, and the hummus seemed to have a little too much water maybe and not enough tahini. It didn't stay together like most hummus dishes do. The pita was good. The grape leaves were tasty. Basic, vegetarian grape leaves served with tzatziki sauce. The sauce was thicker than most I have had before but still had a nice cucumber flavor to it. On our way out I chose to order a piece of baklava to go. It was a large pastry, and tasted sweet and delicious. I ate the entire piece on my walk home. :) I want to get back over here to try a couple more things off of the menu. We also got to meet Chef Maria herself. She is amicable and chatted with us for a few minutes towards the end of our visit there. She is still working out the kinks of hours and such. She has entertainment some nights. Recently she had a belly dancer inside the dining room. Nice addition to the neighborhood.

Excellent food and top notch service. I'm so glad I went out of my way and tried this truly authentic Greek bistro. Firstly, the food is delicious. We had a feast for lunch, starting with the trio of hummus and pita bread. For the main course, I had the grilled vegetable pita with fries, and sampled the lemon pepper chicken and potatoes. Everything was so fresh and flavorful. The portions are very large, but the food is on the lighter side, leaving me full without being miserable. While the food is always the most important aspect to me, the service here really stole the show. We didn't meet Maria, but we were waited on by a man who I assume is a co-owner. He was a happy, friendly man with the sweetest Greek accent. He was warm, welcoming and conversational. He really made the experience great, while enlightening us to a little slice of Greek culture. We sat on the patio, which is perfect for a nice day. It's large, peaceful, and beautiful. Each table is set with a flower pot. It's a wonderful place to relax with a bottle of wine and good conversation. I can't wait to return and try more delicious menu items. Note: I'm not sure if it's the policy for all business hours, but for lunch, you pay at the bar on your way out. No need to sit there and wait for your check.

I wanted to check out this place since it's 500 feet from my new apartment. Not many Yelp reviews, only 18, which makes me feel like it's new or recently changed ownership (?). We came in for dinner for 2 around 6 on a Tuesday evening. It was raining, so we opted to sit indoors, although I had read about the fantastic patio area. We sat ourselves about the same time as 2 parties of six and a four top. Ordering was altogether bizarre, as the server drops down paper checklists, sushi-style, for each person to circle with a pencil what s/he wants for appetizers (tapas), dinner, salad, and sides. A drink menu was provided with standard bar cocktails, beer, and wine. We ordered one Long Island Iced Tea and one glass of a white Greek wine. The L.I.T. was free pour, but the fresh lemon juice and Pepsi ratio was off, so it was replaced with a Whiskey Sour. Once settled with our drinks, the waiting began....it may have been due to the rush of multiple tables seating at once, or to the inexperience of the server, but I was surprised that it took so long to get our food- we even had time to step out on the patio to explore and have a leisurely smoke. After returning inside, We were served one of the two tapas we had requested. The lamb stuffed mushrooms were delivered by an older gentleman with a jovial attitude, and they were DELICIOUS! They seemed to be baked in the oven, but were still firm enough to hold up to the ground meat and shredded soft cheese. For entrees we got the Pasisitas (?), A baked pasta casserole with Bechemel cheese sauce which melted in the mouth. Served with a fresh side salad of cucumbers, tomato, onions, green peppers, and olive oil dressing, it was a hit. And the a falafel plate open face style - you put the hummus on warm pita with tomato and onion yourself. OMG the food deserves 5 stars independently! If the quality of service picks up, this spot will make a killing! Overall, we were never charged for the fish tacos that we marked down for on the paper sheet, and the errors were graciously corrected, I was given extra hummus to go for no extra charge, and if you have time for a good meal, this food is so WORTH THE WAIT! We will certainly go back.

Great atmosphere, great service, bland food. Patstitsio noodles were overdone and sauce was tasteless. Gyro meat also bland and the pita was not toasted, leaving it stale and lifeless. I really wanted to love this place as I live close. But it was the blandest, lamest Greek food I've had. Bummer.

The always friendly staff delivers amazing, traditional Greek food in generous portions. They done a fantastic job with the patio area and have a good alcohol selection. They only down side is that they recently cut their lunch hours

The baked lemon herb chicken was very tasty and the oven baked potatoes were also a very nice compliment to the chicken. There was also chicken gravy for dipping. Would definitely recommend if you are hungry and in the area to stop in for dinner.

I am so thrilled to have this place walking distance from my house. The owners and staff are so sweet, helpful, and we enjoyed a great conversation with them. We ordered 3 lunch entrees and there was tons of food, tasted amazing and the atmosphere is welcoming and cozy. The outdoor patio is gorgeous and if you choose to stay inside there is also a piano to play. We will definitely be back for dinner and drinks as well!

The lamb gyro pita was excellent. The meat was flavorful and the sauce was a perfect compliment. The server was beyond friendly. Went with a large group and I think we overwhelmed them. Food arrived to the table over a 15min interval. I do not know if I would come with such a large group again but for ansmaller group I will definately come back!

Old Louisville is lucky to have Maria! I went here for lunch today--shared the grape leaves and grilled vegetable pita, and both dishes were wonderful. Everything was fresh, and the service was good. It's evident that Maria takes a lot of pride in this place. I plan on making another visit soon for dinner.

Are you looking for any of the following? Greek food. Greek chef. Greek wine. Greek atmosphere. Go here for a big old heck yes to all! The menu is rather extensive so the trick in ordering is to ask Chef Maria or her brother, Manolis, for their choice. You will get both a recommendation and probably a story that goes along with it. Nothing we ate was less than scrumptious. But the moussaka (eggplant casserole) was hands-down, the best. And I do not like eggplant. The costs are a bit higher than I'd expect but the care given to the food makes it worth it. Plus I could listen to the owners talk about their lives all night. This is where you come to sit outside on the patio, enjoy a glass of wine and catch up with old friends over some truly authentic Greek food.

Greek food is the best food, and that definitely stands true for Chef Maria's authentic cooking! This place is the real deal and everyone in Louisville should be running to her restaurant. I had to order the gyro and the hummus, and it was the best Greek food I've ever had. The gyro is perfectly seasoned with large chunks of tomatoes and onions, and a healthy portion of tzatziki sauce. Chef Maria is truly such a kind and hospitable lady. I cannot wait to return!

So happy to see some authentic Greek food come to town! One of the best gyros I have ever had, and it was HUGE. The lamb is tender and perfectly flavored, and the tzatziki sauce was awesome. I also tried the hummus appetizer which was three different kinds- olive, garlic, and regular. It's a quaint little place in Old Louisville, I do hope the word gets out so they get some more business. The chef is such a nice lady and comes out into the floor to see how everyone's food is, very personal.

New to neighborhood so dropped in for our first visit and loved it. Will be there often... Loved the outside sitting area and our salad and lamb were top notch Greek offerings. Baklava after was ideal. Got a bottle of Greek wine as well...
