The brisket is amazing here and won't disappoint. Fish tacos and the pasta are a must try also. Great selection of beer and great staff. This is definitely a place to come back on a regular basis.

This review is strictly about the bar scene. Came here over the Derby weekend on Saturday night. Every bar had over $10 for cover...Baxter's was $5 so we headed on in. Very cool vibe right off the bat. We headed to the back and they had a live band playing and it was probably the best cover band I've ever heard. We were going to bar hop but ended up staying at Baxter's all night. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 stars is because the back bar is cash only, so that was kind of a pain.

Went again and unfortunately the excellent burgers have been replaced with smoked burgers. Smoke taste overwhelming. Mac and cheese was good, pasta average. 2 for 1 happy hour with bartender Jessica outstanding. Hopefully can correct the food issues.

FYI: This review is strictly for the bar scene as I've never eaten here. I was here Saturday night with a friend and it was the second bar we went to, so it was pretty late in the night once we got here. There was a cover charge of $5 (sometimes it's only $3- just depends on the guys working the door) which isn't awful in my opinion. It was pretty packed when we first walked in, but the place almost reminds me of a shotgun house. It looked much smaller on the outside but it just kept going. ***IF YOU ARE TRYING TO USE A FAKE ID: do not bother with it here. As far as I've seen, this place is the strictest about fakes (as they probably should be). They don't mess around and just because you're a girl, good looking, etc. does not mean you will be cut any slack. They have multiple bars where you can get your drinks which is nice if one is too crowded or what have you. If you use your card to pay, there is a $10 minimum so don't plan on only having one drink. Their beer is relatively cheap as far as I noticed, which is nice and explains why a lot of college-aged people hang out here. I had a whiskey sour to start which was good, however pretty sour compared to what I've had in the past. Obviously this all depends on the bartender that evening. The music they were playing when we walked in was upbeat, popular songs so it was great for dancing although we went straight out to the patio so we didn't dance. By the time we were leaving, the music had turned to throwbacks from my middle school days and we decided to dance before leaving which was probably the most fun we had while we were there. I'm only giving 3 stars because after all, this is just another bar. Nothing stood out to me or was spectacular about the bar scene.

Great barbecue and a great vibe! Definitely will come back! I was in town for a conference, and one night we wanted to explore a bit away from downtown, so we headed over the the Highlands and made our way here. Our waitress was extremely friendly and helpful, and the food was so delicious! The beer selection was pretty good, and it was nice seeing good Ohio beers (and drinking them.) Their barbecue sauce selections were on point and paired perfectly with all our food! My roasted red pepperjack veggie pasta (a little wordy) was so amazing, as was my friends' barbecue. After dinner, we stuck around to listen to the live band and hang out, and it was difficult to make ourselves leave and try somewhere else during our short stay in Louisville. We were just having too much fun!

I should probably visit this place a few more times before writing a review, but I feel pretty confident that my opinion has been solidified. I would give it a 3.5 star review if that were an option. But it isn't. So I rounded up. The thing this place has going for it is the same thing that most other places in this area of the city has going for it - good atmosphere. Especially when it is warm out and they have the windows open. They also have Old Style beer. Haven't had one of those in a long time. And as a fan of the Chicago Cubs, I'm obligated. I bought some ribs and got them with a Carolina style sauce (mustardy sauce). They were OK. I rate them about average. For ribs, I'd rather go to Doc Crow's or Smoketown USA. The cornbread was fantastic. My wife gobbled it up. Mac n' cheese was very cheesy. Which is what you want. This place is surprisingly pretty big, too. I was surprised just how much seating they had. Baxter's 942 is worth visiting. It's also worth exploring the food menu. And it seems to be reasonably priced across the board.

We came here after a work function that was really rather boring and turned our night around at Baxter's. It was a great time. One of the people with us had too much to drink, passed out in their toilet and had to be carried out to an Uber taxi and the staff was helpful carrying her and arranging the cab. It would have been nice if their stalls had been easier to get into when the lady unfortunately crashed out but one doesn't plan for grown adults to lose composure in public on the regular. The drinks were great too, the staff was prompt and helpful and the only real complain I had about my evening would be that having put my employees on my tab they kept hugging me. It will curb my largesse in the future. I value my team, I don't need a bear hug because I redistributed the wealth. They also had a great band and if I wasn't so drunk that night I'd remember who they were to mention them by name as well. It was really unfortunate when my coworkers sang because that was awful and I hope that no one had a bad time because of that crooning. I'm glad they produce better than they sing.

I'm a Texan native and I have to admit this place has some of best BBQ around. I've tried almost the entire menu and I can strongly admit it all tastes terrific. You cannot go wrong with anything off the menu. The chef is passionate about the food he sends out if the kitchen.

Overall a decent place. Nice bar, clean, open floor plan. My husband and I stopped by here while on our visit through town and planned on having dinner here but didn't. The bartender was wearing a shirt with holes in it and a cartoon character on it and leggings, I didn't feel like she took her job seriously. She over poured my drink to the point where I felt like I was sipping on rubbing alcohol through a straw. I will come back on another visit but this bartender just sucks. (Although we didn't order food, some others at the bar dos and it looked great!)

Excellent food. Went with a group and enjoyed several appetizers:ribs and nachos and the brisket tacos for dinner . Zesty, excellent flavor. Good beer selection. I really enjoyed the radler, don't find it many places. Will definitely return. Casual dining in the highlands.

Great bar food, simple menu done right. BBQ is killer and the waffle cut sweet potato fries are the best.

I've only been her once it's a very small resturant it's kind of like a shot gun house resturant. The food was over priced but goo.

I wish they allowed half stars. Definite 4.5. I'm giving it a 5 to offset that. Lived here 3 years but never ate here. Had a bad stigma. Ate a month ago and it was solid. Eating a small romaine salad with smoked chicken now. $5.25!!! Happy hour is 2 for 1! This place beats Flanagan's and Osheas.

Awesome barbecue!!! I had the pulled chicken spinach salad and could eat this every night!!!

It seems like this location is where bars go to die--I've seen at least 5 different ones come in and out in the 7ish years I've lived here, but I think this one might be here to stay. As most of the previous comments have said, it's great for dancing and live music, there's no cover charge and the drinks are pretty reasonably priced considering its location. They have fishbowls for $20 and what group of girls would ever say no to a fishbowl? They also have a lot of TVs, making it a great place to watch the game. My friends and I just watched the Final Four game here and one of the TVs by our table wasn't working--the manager went way out of his way to ensure it was working before game time and was super cool. We had two different servers throughout the day/night (we started waaaay early) and they were both great considering the number of people they were serving. The food is just meh, but you're not really coming here to eat now are you?

Chef Chi-town baby!!!!!! He has the best BBQ on Bardstown... Plus the bartenders keep your drink full!

I really enjoy that fact that every time I go into Baxter's I end up talking to someone I've never met before. The live music that they have is just right for conversation or for dancing. Great mix of people in the crowd and it's really fun with a gang of gals who like to get-down and dance! I usually end up here if I'm in the neighborhood for the sheer fact that I've always been able to have a great time here. Bar tenders are prompt as well. I can't go all five-stars for this one because I can NEVER get the door guy to dance with my friends and I. So maybe I should actually give five stars because they're pretty bent on keeping the place decent?

Love this place! Got to try the pepper jack Mac and cheese and it was amazing! They have a new menu - good options for all. Tonight I tried the ribeye and it was delicious. Very good service and love the live musicians they feature!

It really is a big bar full of all these different spaces to explore. They cleaned it up nicely from what I remember of the bar here before Baxters 942. While it is still what you expect on Baxter in the Irish Pub block (kinda young crowd, clubby but not a club, with live music up front and dj in back), it also has this great back bar that is more chill without a wait and even the the wait to get drinks at the front bar was impressively short considering it was pretty packed Derby night. Pretty clean bathrooms, and I was glad to see they had opened up a cool back patio. Weird note: there were more dudes on the dance floor most of the night, which NEVER happens. This might be in part from Derby, but probably worth going back to let the single ladies mack. The music the DJ played at first was a little too techno/hard to dance to, but within an hour it was exactly what we wanted. The menu actually looks really solid. Not just bar food and it seems that a lot of care went into it (read: not just burgers and chicken fingers). They also have a great happy hour that was surprisingly unknown. Don't slow my wait though. This will be a nice change-up from the OSheas/Flanagans kick everyone has been on. Glad to have another fun dancing night choice!

Had somewhere between three and several drinks here last night. Enjoyed the live music and VERY diverse and eclectic crowd. Once the love music was over though, the Top40 DJ mixing drove me away -- not in my wheelhouse anymore (tho the kids seem to love it :-)

Walked in with a small group this past Christmas weekend, each paying a $3 cover, immediately stood in line for oir first round of drinks. As soon as we entered, it seemed to be a typical "standing room only" bar with loud popular mix music and expensive drinks. About 15 minutes pass, while talking with some friends and still standing in line for drinks, a bouncer pushes me into a group of girls standing next to me, spilling their drinks on all of us, staining my jacket and dress shirt. My wife helps me up and we apologize to the group of girls and turning to see what the bouncers problem is. Another bouncer comes over and asks me to have a "talk" with him. I was expecting some form of compensation due to this incident but instead, he grabs my arm, leads me outside, and shuts the door as he pushes me out. The security guys outside had no clue what was up and I immediately asked the security outside for a manager. While this is going on my friends asked the bouncers what is going on but were ignored. The bouncers outside also seem to ignore my request and wouldn't response when i asked for our cover charges to be reimbursed. Obviously i was getting nowhere, so we left as soon as everyone made it back outside. This is my first "poor" review and I'm asking my Yelp friends to avoid this "rude" and literally "dangerous" establishment and take your business elsewhere. We went to Osheas next door, noticed immediately cleaner bar, staff was friendly, and stayed most the night trying a variety of uncommon drafts and drinks. We dropped a few hundred between all of us and had a good time! It's really sad to see businesses like Baxters Bar and Grill treat customers like this and get away with it. I will not be back, nor will any of my friends who accompanied me that evening. They got our cover charges, but they will not get any future business from at least the 10 of us who were there.

In my mind, there is one reason and one reason only to go to Baxter's: dancing. If I'm hanging out in the Highlands after 11 p.m. on a Friday or Saturday night and feel like dancing, Baxter's is my go-to bar. There's no cover charge, and you can dance the night away with your girlfriends without being bothered too much. There are also quieter sections of the bar in the back if you're not the dancing type.

Great bands! Great place to go! Come here anytime you want to hear GOOD music on bardstown road. The drinks are reasonable for the area too!

I've never eaten here, but the drinks are great and the staff is friendly. We love exploring this place and finding all the fun places to sit and drink. If you come to the Highlands Festival and want to escape the crowd, come sit out back and relax before rejoining the party.

K, idk what "Cathy P." was talking about bc this place is awesome! First of all, both times we went the service was great. Even though they were out of a few things they were very nice about it and made up for it with other things. The food is prob considered bar food, but id say its gourmet bar food- and unique menu items. We had the app sampler which was bourbon glazed meatballs (yum) fried pickles (yum), queso sticks (yum yum), and chicken strips (amazing-and I don't even like chicken strips that much). We also shared the barbeque sandwhich which was amazing as well. The ambience is great as well, even with live music some nights. The renovation to this building is beautiful and I can see this place getting a lot busier when the word gets out.

I have been going here since they opened this summer and its a blast! It has been gradually getting more and more popular and it can get a little busy, but the staff usually has things under control. Its a great mix between 4th st and bardstown rd atmosphere without the huge and unrulely crowds

Went there on a crowded Saturday night(weekend before Halloweeen). Everything was about what you would expect for such a crowded frat bar. What made me mad was that the bartender wasn't giving change when you bought your drinks with cash. Instead he was just depositing the $$ straight into his tip jar. I would have left the $1.75 for the drink each time- but come on.... You can't do that

Please do something to fix the acoustics, the live music in the main room sucks. It is only tolerable if you listen from the backroom. The backroom might be better suited for live music, and maybe have two acts a night front and back. The newest restaurant/bar in the highlands has a lot of promise for a location that can't seem to keep the doors open. They offer something that has been missing on Baxter/Bardstown for a long time, a country meets rock n roll bar. The bar itself is completely changed. What appears to be a custom made bar sets the tone and let's you know the owners really put a lot of work into this place. New booths and a slightly different layout make it a better place to relax with friends and enjoy the new menu. I had already eaten that night but decided to try the sampler to see how the food was. It was late and I didn't see any other food so I figured the kitchen was closed. Surprisingly it was still open and cooking up some good bar food. The fried pickles were great, maybe need to have more of a kick but they were some of the best I have had in Louisville with not too much breading and not soaked in greased like many others. Chicken tenders were good too, they would give any chicken tender in town a run for it's money. Then on to the not so common apps, what I thought was just a cheese stick turned out to be a queso cheese stick. First time I have had one and I loved them, even a friend who doesn't venture much past traditional american food helped finish them off. Finally the reason I ordered the sampler, the meatballs. You don't see meatballs in many restaurants that aren't Italian, so I had to try them. Honestly they really hit the spot, but I was hoping for a homemade meatball. It wouldn't take much more to make them homemade and easily a go to item on the app menu. I will say after just a taste of the menu I wish I hadn't eaten dinner already, but it gives me a reason to go back. Menu is full of regular bar food with a unique choice mixed in here and there, I would expect it all to be atleast a little better than most of the other places in the area, can't wait to try it all. The music selection was mostly rock/country which I liked as a nice change from the rest of the places in the area. I tried to find out what they had in store and from what I was told Tuesday is live music possibly open mic, and Thursday is Country night. I am hoping live music every night with a focus on rock and country but will have to wait and see. I would guess they will give in and play top 20 and dance music on the weekends but I am hoping they try to be different. That has been tried several times at this particular location and it never works so something different would be worth a shot. A good live country band to play on friday/saturday nights may bring a surprisingly large crowd if word gets out. Overall I was impressed and hope this place tries to be different than the other options on Baxter/Bardstown. Once they get everything finished this will be a very nice addition to Baxter and great place to go that is not like every other bar in the area.

Cheap beer during happy hour! Definate plus, but the women's restroom was the worst smelling restroom. I didn't have any food, but the menu looked pretty extensive.
