Simple pleasure of grilled cheese and tomato soup takes many people to their childhood. For me, I need a bit more than a simple grilled cheese and this is why I can enjoy this place, because in addition to their classic combo that everyone craves, they also have "upgraded" grilled cheese sandwiches for people like me. Flying pig and the crunchy garlic chicken are the two I have tried and loved. Their creamy tomato basil soup is tasty and the blue cheese chilli is intriguing. The first time I had the blue cheese chilli, it needed more blue cheese but when I tried it again at the Crave, it was perfect!!! Crunchy garlic chicken has potato chips in it and reminds me lunch break in high school when I used to buy a sandwich and a bag of chips and put the chips in my sandwich for an added texture. So yes, we can say that the crunchy chicken is a trip down the memory lane for me!!! Only recently I realized that they actually have gluten free (GF) bread and vegan cheese as options for their grilled cheese sandwiches. To a cheese-lover like myself, vegan cheese is not the first option but for vegans, it is the main option for getting that signature creamy texture that makes grilled cheese the ultimate comfort food. And, if you are GF for any reason, this place allows you to add grilled cheese sandwich back to your dining experience. I have a few friends with Celiac's disease and they had mentioned that they enjoyed this place and staff was very knowledgeable about GF options. It's especially a big deal for me because a close friend of mine has strong reactions to even the smallest amounts of gluten and for that reason, our dining options have been a bit more limited. We just agreed that this will be our next location for dinner and a bit of catching up! Probably the only thing that doesn't make Tom+Chee a 5-star comfort food experience is the layout of the place and lack of clean tables to find at times. I really hope that they can bring a cleaner face to this restaurant! Can't wait to be back to try more of their menu!

I ordered the Tom-Chee figuring you can't go wrong there. I also ordered 1 of the 2 soups of the day Buffalo Chicken. My 9 year old had a plain grilled cheese. The soup was good & spicy. However, my son said it best when he said, "If you want a good grilled cheese go to Cracker Barrel." I am giving a generous 2-stars because at least the soup was good.

I built my own grilled cheese: sourdough bread with mozzarella and cheddar cheeses. Then, I added a bowl of classic tomato soup and a small drink. Joe ordered The Tom + Chee sandwich (which was like mine, plus tomatoes and garlic). He added a cup of classic tomato soup and a small drink. The sandwiches were perfectly grilled, and the tomato soup was fresh and had a great flavor to it. The staff was friendly, offered suggestions, and brought the food to our table once it was made. I'll definitely try it again sometime. I'm curious about the glazed donut experience. Definitely give this place a try sometime.

One of the best places to eat when you want fun food and a great price! Who doesn't love grilled cheeses and tomato soups? I honestly haven't had one yet I didn't like! Soup is yummy, and the salads are amazing! The best thing for me is that they are totally celiac friendly, it's truly one of the safest places in LEX for me to eat! I typically eat here 1-3 times a week.

3.5 star review. For those who may not be familiar, Tom + Chee is a tomato soup and grilled cheese joint, although they do offer a few salads and usually have a soup of the day offering that is not tomato soup. As for the tomato soup, the chunky tomato basil is my favorite and contains big pieces of tomato. They also have creamy tomato soup and classic tomato soup. The grilled cheese sandwich options are pretty much limitless, especially if you create your own. I keep meaning to get a grilled cheese donut for dessert but am always too full. I will get one eventually. Service has left a little to be desired during my multiple visits there, but it has not been anything terrible either. As many other reviewers have noted, the flow of the place is seriously jacked up. I usually go at off-peak times so I have not had a problem finding a table but I can imagine that it might be a problem during the lunch rush. As for a niche restaurant, I like Tom + Chee just fine and think it makes a nice addition to Lexington's fast-casual dining scene.

If you like lukewarm soup, dirty tables and a 45 minute wait, this place is for you. I ordered the crispy garlic chicken sandwich and basic tomato soup. The tomato soup was moderately more flavorful than Campbell's but at $3 a cup, nearly 3 times as expensive. The one redeeming quality (other than the good long conversation with my mom while we waited) was the toasted bread of the sandwich which was decently good but otherwise unremarkable. Will I visit this restaurant again, maybe. How could they correct their poor quality? Maybe the owner could hire another employee or two. Then at least it would make the customer service on par with Burger King and maybe I could get served quickly enough that my soup and sandwich would still be warm.

Great little shop that invented the doughnut grill cheese and wow it is to die for. I saw this franchise on The Shark Tank and fell in love with the idea and concept. They offer many different options of cheese sandwiches from plain jane to over the top. They serve a few sizes of soups and different flavor profiles as well. It was a very clean and vibrant shop where the workers were extremely friendly. The owners of the franchise Trew and Corey were there as well and were even nice enough to pose for a picture and chat a few moments. Very impressive guys. They do offer a kids meal and different sides as well. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone. This is truly a great addition the the Lexington food options. Thank god I don't have to drive to Louisville for the great taste of a Tom + Chee.

Stopped in on our way to gatlinburg, amd I was impressed. Had the pesto turkey and bleu cheese chili. The chili was a little heavy for me, but that is probably from me being in the car for 4 hours amnd having 3 more to go. Kid friendly especially with the grilled cheese sandwiches. Overall, a good alternative to the typical road trip food, will definitely return if I am ever back im Lexington. This place would do well in Indianapolis in the right location.

I had the Tom Chee sandwich and Chunky Tomato soup. It was all right. I thought at first they had put some spicy pepper on my sandwich mistakenly, but I think it was just the amount of garlic. I was expecting a very smooth, typical grilled cheese sandwich, but it had very intense chunks of garlic mixed in. I was looking for a normal grilled cheese, maybe with tomatoes, and tomato soup, because that pairing is a nostalgic favorite. The tomato soup tasted like canned stewed tomatoes turned into a soup; it was surprisingly peppery. Panera has a seasonal menu pairing of a fontina grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup, and I think it's much tastier. We got our food to go and by the time we got back to the office, perhaps twenty minutes away, the sandwich was soggy. It may have been the amount of butter used to cook it, or the tomatoes on it. My coworker got a vegan grilled cheese sandwich (at least the cheese was vegan, I don't know if they cooked it with butter--maybe they use oil?) and a bowl of soup instead of a cup. He ended up eating a bowl of cereal after finishing because he wasn't full. I thought the serving size was okay, and the prices were what I expected. I do think homemade grilled cheese sandwiches turn out better, and Panera's is better, too. I would try eating here again because they have a large menu.

The food is really good but the layout is pretty bad. We have eaten here 4 times and only once did we have a place to sit immediately after we ordered. Just not big enough. Each sandwich I have had has been good. Bread is thick, plenty of cheese and toppings. You can get veggies and meats. Either order a named sand which or create your own. Can't beat a grilled cheese with hot peppers! Three types of tomato soup. Regular, creamy and chunky. Creamy is my favorite. Chunky is too chunky for me. Go eat here. Just have time to wait if they are remotely busy. 5 stars if only reviewing the food and staff!

When I found out that lexington was getting a restaurant that focused on grilled cheese and tomato soup I freaked out. Grilled cheese and tomato soup is my favorite comfort food and this restaurant adds delicious variety to such simple comfort foods. The Mac n cheese grilled cheese and the tomato basil soup are by far my favorite items on the menu. One of these days I will eventually try one of their grilled cheese doughnuts.

Meh! One of my favourite comfort foods is tomato soup with toasted cheese sandwiches so I was quite excited when we spotted this place near our hotel. It did NOT live up to expectations. Service was meh. Decor meh. The soup was fine, just fine, not good, certainly not good enough to base a restaurant around. The cheese toasty was fine, just fine... not special at all. Yes, it was crispy with a generous amount of cheese but it really was nothing special - I have made better cheese toasties at home on a regular basis! My partner had macaroni cheese added to his sandwich which looked amazing but really was just average at best. Great restaurant idea that misses the mark. Disappointed.

Stopped in for an early dinner for my first visit to Tom + Chee. I'm a huge fan of Shark Tank, so I was excited about stopping in here. First, I ordered the Bacon + Blue grilled cheese and a bowl of Creamy Tomato Basil. The sandwich was superb. The bread is great quality, it was PACKED with flavorful bacon, just the right amount of blue cheese and was perfectly grilled. The soup was okay. It had a good basil flavor and a good texture, but was a bit thin as if it was not quite ready. I wasn't stopping there, though. The meal I already finished was plenty, but the signage on the walls talked me into trying the Grilled Cheese Donut. Sounds gross, I know - I urge you to give it a try though! It was very good. However, when I went to order the sweet and savory creation, the lady at the register was on her cell phone having a conversation about how one of her friends or relatives was just arrested. Pretty rude and inappropriate. The food is pretty good here. I'll be back.

If your a tomato soup and grilled cheese fan you have to try Tom & Chee. Awesome variety and delicious food. The place is hoping at lunch so make sure you have time to drop by. You'll be glad you came.

I really wanted to try this place, but was really disappointed. I stopped in for a to go order to take back to work. I ordered the Mac n cheese grilled cheese. Maybe that was what was wrong but I don't think so. The bread had a good flavor but couldn't tats much of the cheese. I made it a combo with a small cup of creamy tomato basil soup. Those two things cost me over $8!!! Priced way too high. This DID NOT include a drink or chips or anything. For that price it should be included and I wouldn't have thought too much of it. The soup wasn't good. Progresso's creamy tomato basil soup is better than what I had. I won't be going back. I can find better things to spend money on for lunch and not still be hungry afterwards. I don't care to spend 10.00 or so on lunch as long as it's good and it fills you up. I forgot to take a picture. I'll stick to making my own grilled cheese sandwiches.

I hadn't been to Tom + Chee until they hosted a Yelp event. I have to start by saying the staff was great and the location is quite nice. I enjoyed the nice selection of food they had for us to try. All the breads were excellent, I especially found their whole-wheat to grill beautifully and still have a bit of softness when I bit into the sandwich. The ingredients seemed high quality and almost everything was executed well. The soups were tasty too. I wish they'd included their most basic grilled cheese but I did enjoy trying some combos I might not have otherwise. The grilled doughnuts seem to be a big seller. I have to admit that while I found the doughnuts themselves (split and grilled cake side down) really tasty, I wasn't a fan of the doughnut sandwich combos. But their menu includes lots of options for customization, so I'm sure when I go back I'll be able to get a combo that is more appealing to my personal taste. All in all, definitely worth a try.

They have so many choices and I've yet to order a sandwich that wasn't great. Also, best tomato soup I've had. If you're not really hungry, this is a great place to go to.

Must try the green goat salad and the turkey pesto sandwich. Very friendly staff. Service is sometimes a little slow bit the food is always fresh and tasty.

Been there three times now and it's been very consistent. The blue cheese chili is great. No beans, which I prefer. Lunch rush can be a wait. The staff was helpful and very nice. You can add veggies to your grilled cheese. Got tomatoes, they were diced. Would have liked sliced. They kept falling out of the sandwich. To the owner, there has been some type of advertising guy there the past three times I've been. He won't shut up and I've had to wait on him to finish asking everything there is to know about you. Please, for the sake of expediency. Contact him or tell him not to come back. He is the biggest inconvenience so far.

Friends of mine recommended Tom + Chee and I LOVE grilled cheese sandwiches, so I made sure to stop in. The place wasn't bad, but not a match for the hype. I got the bleu cheese and bacon and that was good, but the creamy tomato basil soup that came with it was way below par, and the overall atmosphere was of an industrial McDonald's. I might go back in the future to try another of the sandwiches if I'm in Lexington anytime soon, but I wouldn't go out of my way to stop in.

Limited seating, almost outgrown the place. Ordered the special Liberty Bell and the blue cheese chili. Both were great. The wife had the hippy chee and a chunky tomato soup as a dipper. She also enjoyed them. We ordered two grilled cheese doughnuts and a lemon drop to go. We went during half time of a UK game and it was packed. We will be back and hopefully enjoy some outdoor seating in the Spring.

Could be much better. I'll start by saying that I love the idea of fancy grilled cheese sandwiches and soup. I really want to love this place. However, there are a number of small issues that add up to negatively affect the experience. I'll start with those... 1. The line is backwards. The restaurant is clearly designed to have the line form along the left wall, go along the counter, pay, and get your drink. Instead, the line threads through the seating area, blocks access to the drink machine, and when you pay, you have to go against the flow to get to your table. 2. If you can find a table. There is limited seating. If you go at lunchtime, be prepared to wait for a table. 3. Once at your table, you wait for your food by displaying a little metal number. The staff will then proceed to walk around cluelessly looking for those little metal numbers. Expect them to walk by the table at least 3 times before they recognize that it's your food in their hands. 4. By then, your food is a little cool. I'm afraid that, in their haste, the sandwiches are not as warm and cheezy / melty as you would expect. 5. They don't use Grippo's. I can't explain why. Don't they have Cincy pride? C'mon... 6. The soup's not great. It's good.. but... meh. 7. The drink prices are outrageous. When they first opened, a small soda was $1. Now, it's $1.75, but you still get the same 12oz. cup. I'll have a water please and thank you. 8. The employees aren't very friendly or helpful. 9. You'll spend $8 and still be hungry. Now, all that being said, the Spicy Beef grilled cheese is pretty good, and yes, I'll be back. Maybe next time will be better.

I have had take out, and brought too me. I'm one of the few that understand they are NEW and just open, takes time to get your staff and processes on track. That said give them a break and slow your roll. Both times I have had the Swiss Sroom grilled cheese and it was great!! with a cup of Basil Tom soup, very good also. I work close and this will be on my lunch list for sure!! Keep it up you Cin Boys!! and ladys

All these long cold days we've been having made this a perfect place to stop and eat. I had a grilled cheese with added roast chicken on sourdough and their regular tomato soup. Very tasty. My husband couldn't get enough of the blue cheese chili. It was thick and chunky, very hearty. He also had a grilled cheese on wheat. The only things I didn't like were: a) that you have to scope out a seat while you are in the order line because we have been twice and it is standing room only; and b) the soda/drink area is right along the ordering line path. We plan on going back and working our way through the menu board.

One of Lexington's newest "hot spots" is Tom+Chee in Hamburg. Tom+Chee, as seen on ABC's 'Shark Tank,' features classic comfort food, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches in numerous variations, and tasty Tomato Soup, and quite often, their Blue Cheese Chili. Tom+Chee is a niche restaurant, and if the large crowds are any indication, people are definitely delighted with the niche menu. If you want other types of food, go elsewhere. The menu is incredibly simple: They serve grilled cheese sandwiches. It's up to you to choose which type you prefer. The prices are reasonable, the staff is efficient and friendly (and always busy), and the food has been delicious and satisfying on each of my three previous visits. If there is any downside to Tom+Chee's in Hamburg it is that the location offers somewhat limited seated at peak periods--so you may have wait. (Such a wait is not unusual in larger cities but some in Lexington are prone to that fast-food-feed-me-now mentality.) This location is evolving beyond the growing pains of any new restaurant, and as reported in the news, Tom+Chee's franchises are hot. Lexington is lucky to have a Tom+Chee so early in the company's growth and hopefully more locations are planned for other areas of Lexington. If you want a good ol' fashioned comforting grilled cheese with a twist, visit Tom+Chee's soon.

Had the spicy grilled cheese and small cup of gazpacho. Although both were OK both were something I could have made at home and done as good a job. For 2 of us to eat and have a grilled donut the cost was around 30.00. The problem I had was when I left and got home I realized I didn't have my cell phone. Of course I thought of Tom and Chee first since I had it out there. When I called, at 8:45 pm, I got a recording saying they were either closed or assisting other customers (they close at 9). So knowing that I wouldn't be able to get there before 9 and not being able to call and see if someone turned it in was very frustrating. In my opinion customers who call are just as important as customers who are there but apparently Tom and Chee doesn't feel that way. Also - who closes at 9 these days? Not a big fan and will not be going back.

I will give 2 stars because of manager's(?) effort. Our order came out wrong (twice). My wife ordered a bowl of Chili and got a cup. Her sandwich was wrong. My order was wrong as well. After lifting my bread to check sandwich they gave it to someone else! My replacement sandwich was still wrong, no spinich or bbq sauce.... Don't know if we will be back.

My daughter and I ate there today. She loves it and had eaten in the Louisville restaurant. The prices are kind of expensive for a half sandwich and tiny cup of soup. The sandwich was ok, nothing great. I had brie, cheddar and bacon on white. The creamy tomato basil soup was kind of chunky and probably the worst tasting tomato soup I've ever eaten. It had a vinegary taste to it. Oh, and I attempted to get unsweet tea but the liquid coming out of the dispenser was water so I had to get Coke.

This place is great, and I hope they expand to Chicago. It's great to get cheap, fast, and good vegan food. Vegan fast food is pretty rare, and the preschooler liked something new. Very busy here, but had no trouble ordering or finding a seat or parking spot. Plus this location is right next to the horse cemetery if you want an interesting jaunt.

The food is a welcomed addition to the area but I'm afraid, as most places in this spot have, it will fail spectacularly if some changes aren't made. The staff is less than friendly. I've visited on the opening day and two subsequent times. The experience getting worse with each visit. The checkout process between the hours of 11-3 is just painful. Most of the time they only utilize one of the two registers without a clear line or direction. They also have minimal seating and groups often take a table before ordering. Thus inhibiting any ability to gather a seat if you're not a complete douche. Lastly, they obviously could care less about restocking anything with any speed. Both of my last two visits have yielded an empty ice machine, no straws, and no napkins. I like the food, but the management is horrible. Spend your money elsewhere for the time being. They have no interest in serving their customers.

Service was fast, but I ordered what mom used to make all the time, white bread with american grilled cheese sandwich, and I got the basil creamy tomato soup. I ordered to go, and got the bowl of soup, but it honestly appeared that what I may have gotten is the cup. it wasn't a very big to go serving of soup, and the grilled cheese was just on par of what I would have expected if I made it at home. When you walk into the restaurant you are lead along a walk to the make area, and I stood there for a few minutes and realized you had to place you order at the other end, so you have to cross through the path of people waiting for there order. no signage to say order here. So it was a little confusing for a first time visitor. I think its a nitch market but one that I'm just not sure if its got what it will take long term. this would be a neat type of thing in a small town, but not as a chain in major cities. Some of my friends thought maybe on campus would be a better place for this type of concept. The atmosphere was open, and plenty of seating, I may try it one more time with some other friends and get another opinion, but it sat in my mind that I could have made identical at home for much less. Also there corporate website did not list the location or allowed you to order ahead at this time for this location.

Go out on a limb and try a unique grilled cheese from their fancy grilled cheese menu. Awesome food, friendly staff, good prices and great for kids too. We have eaten at the location in Newport near the aquarium but the service there isn't good. I'm glad they built a location here in Hamburg.

Stopped here on the way back from a road trip. The place seemed pretty empty. They have a very large variety of sandwiches, soups, and salads to choose from. I had the pesto turkey sandwich as well as chili with bleu cheese. The food was pretty good, and the prices were great for the amount of food and the quality. I wouldn't say it's the best food I ever had, and I don't know that I would go out of my way to go here to eat, but I wouldn't turn it down either. Worth a try, for sure.

Nothing fancy on the inside, reminds one of a Chipotle. Kind of a cool place for lunch as an option for burgers, etc. My wife had the tom & chef sandwich, which she liked a lot. I went for the Mac & cheese sandwich (yes, Mac & cheese) which was very good. I also tried the bleu cheese chili, which was okay. I would definitely go back for the change of pace.

Took 15 minutes to get my soup. Was way too salty for my liking and the bread had so much butter on it I couldn't eat it. Over all not too impressed , all of their "grilled cheeses" are overloaded and hard to comprehend with the insane amount of ingredients for each one.

  • Samara B.

What goes better with a grill cheese sandwich than tomato soup? This place has many different cheese and bread options to choose from. I went with the BLT and Cheese with the soup of the day--beer cheese soup. The soup was tasty and the sandwich was fine but what always gets me is the price of these items. It was over $10 for just a cup of soup and a sandwich--not including a drink. My friend had the chili and he equated it to the type of chili you would put on hot dogs only with less flavor. Personally, I find it to be an adequate lunch, just kind of pricey.

Gourmet grilled cheese and tomato soup. Stopped by with my wife and daughter. We each ordered something different and each enjoyed our selection. A little pricey but solid food and service.
