Seki Sushi is the best place in Lexington (if not Kentucky) for some excellent Japanese cuisine. The decor and setting is quite unassuming compared to its competitors, but what Seki lacks in flair is far overshadowed by the quality and affordability of its food. You won't find any high priced bottles of wine on the menu either, but feel free to bring your own (and a couple glasses). I would recommend calling ahead and making reservations due to the limited seating and dinner time often draws a crowd. Also, be prepared to make some new friend because you will likely be sharing a table with some soon to be ex-strangers. If you are in the mood for great food that lacks the pretension of many other Lexington "Japanese" restaurants, then Seki is the place for you. When making reservations ask it they take credit cards, the last time I was there they did not. And if your friends drink and eat like mine you will find yourself walking to the ATM across the street to cover the bill.

In Lexington area after taking Toyota tour, so the boys wanted Japanese. Not a lot of places open for lunch at 1:30, so we headed here. It is in a tiny office building with six parking places in a rough lot. We passed it the first time by. Lunches are reasonably priced, but the taste is more Korean than Japanese. We started with gyoza and it was thicker and more doughy than typical Japanese gyoza. Not great, but not the worst gyoza we have ever had. Two of us had bento lunches with sushi. It was okay sushi, but not as fresh as it should have been. The teriyaki had a Korean taste similar to bul goi ki sauce. The other two had tempura and it was good, but the texture and taste of the breading/batter was different than what we expected. Overall not bad, but we have had much better Japanese food.

Ordered delivery via LexEatIn. Once the food got to the office we noticed that the sushi and sashimi were warm. Not hot, not cold, but warm. The "salad" was literally just wilted lettuce with no other additions. The portion of sushi and sashimi was ridiculously small. Their menu is misleading to say the least. In any case, we were not going to eat warmed raw fish, just not a smart idea. So we contacted the manager who proceeded to tell me that nothing was wrong with the food and if I brought it to him untouched he'd consider giving me a refund. After I told him it was a health code violation to serve raw fish in this manner he then started yelling so loudly into the phone that I could not understand what he was saying. Unprofessional and unhelpful. Food is unsafe for consumption.

Not impressed aside from the fact that I was one of only two people in the restaurant for most of my meal the food was not impressive at all. The menu is confusing. Service is awkward. There is also next to no parking in the area. Overall, not really enjoyable. Will not be returning.

Sushi was tasty and fresh. Great customer service. Accidentally showed up 30 minutes before they open and happily served us. Definitely coming back. Got the bento box and it was delicious with a good amount of food. Also got three rolls and they were all delicious.

So far the best sushi I've had since moving from California. The service was quick and very easy to order. I didn't know we need a reservation for Seki, we just walked in and sat down anywhere. Sorry! He picked a table furthest away from the front door, and against the wall. We sat down, and looked at the menu. We ordered 5 sushi rolls, enough to feed an army and half, even though it was just the two of us. We're sushi pros! We ordered Rainbow roll, Dynamite Roll, Tempura Roll, Eel Roll, and there was another one, with some kind of yellow pickle radish in it. It was all extremely tasty - I enjoyed every bite. And it was surprisingly affordable. I mean for sushi, woohoo on my wallet in my pocket! Great place, excellent service, and mouthwatering sushi.

Really good sushi! Only have yet to try the Bento bowl, but it's delicious! Well-made and flavorful. However, I would have preferred the broccoli be more like stir fry instead of mushy. The chicken was good, but could have used more teriyaki sauce. I can only speak for their take out, as I have yet to dine-in at the restaurant-but it's good food and I enjoyed it. They also reimbursed me when I did not receive the bottle of water that comes with the meal (both times), so they changed the menu and credited my card so I would not be charged for items I did not receive.

Subpar japanese food. Got the bento box and it was way too oversalted, meat was drowning in salty sauce, so much that I couldn't even find a patch of nice, clean white rice to neutralize the taste. Icky salad and I can't even remember much about whatever else I ordered. That's how mediocre it was. Um... what can I say about this place. It's not totally horrible but it's just so small town Lexington. Anyone who thinks this place is actually good probably needs to go out and see the world.

I am a sushi lover and I thought this place was just okay. I've heard great things and wasn't that impressed.

Note: the last time that I ate here, it was for dinner, with my family, without a reservation and probably sometime during the fall of 2008. Unfortunately, I haven't been back since. I'll be the first to admit that the food was excellent--we started off with the edamame and moved on to the miso soup prior to our order. My family and I are not that adventuresome when it comes to sushi, so we ended up ordering the usual fare California roll, Unagi, and bits of Sashimi. The food: EXCELLENT. The service: AMAZING. The problem: we didn't have a reservation and just walked in after a morning of shopping. I thought that I was reliving the Seinfeld "Soup Nazi" episode. Luckily, my parents pleaded for about 15 minutes and we were eventually ushered to a tiny table close to the door. As the time passed, we realized that most of the patrons were either regulars or had made reservations prior to the day we came. I had no idea. Hence, the reason for the 4/5 stars. Although this was the first time that I had ventured into "unknown" territory, I was pleasantly surprised. It's unfortunate that this is definitely not the case anymore, but I'm glad that I was able to try out this place.

Still the best in Lexington! In response to Ivy C. - I have eaten sushi in Seattle, Los Angeles, Law Vegas, Oahu, Mexico City, San Antonio, Houston, Chicago, HONG KONG, Paris... you name it. So, I consider myself as having been "out and seen the world" and I definitely find Seki to be among the best and freshest of ANYWHERE I have eaten. If you expect to get Hong Kong or West Coast quality sushi in Lexington, you need to get real. Price compare Spago in LA or LV to Seki and I think you will find that the diference is more than comprable. Here, in reality, aka Lexington, KY, the only place I will eat sushi is SEKI.

It is a tiny restaurant and the service is nice, but very slow. They serve complimentary miso soup that doesn't really taste like anything. The rolls and the sushi taste good (that's where they get the stars from, basically), but the amount of fish you get is very very VERY little. I got yellowtail and the pieces were nova lox thin! I found myself wishing I'd just went somewhere else. I had sushi at many different places and even though the fish here taste OK (nothing exceptional) the amount you get for the money is not worth it. I have never seen sushi served this thin.

Was 5 stars. But bought and run with a Korean flare and changed the menu a little bit. Not quite the same seki. Decor has changed and looks nicer. Sushi is still great everything else has dropped off a little bit.

I wanted to PUT ZERO stars! I think the people that have reviewed this sushi place DO NOT KNOW real sushi. First off, I am not from Kentucky - but Sushi is my thing - i will pay top dollar for my shashimi. Well, after a rough day - my husband said lets cheer you up with sushi. So - I had never been to Seki's so I thought I would give it a whirl. Though, a friend of mine in London, who is a chef at NOBU which is world renowned for sushi- told me try the fish and then order. So, we went, with CASH as CC is not accepted, and 200 to burn between the four of us. We ask for 4 slices of salmon shashimi. We sat at the bar which was ply wood and sticky,, and the fish looked "dried". I thought maybe the fish is for show! Then I saw the salmon it did not look sushi grade. Anyway, though maybe that was smoked or something. The shashimi came. I was so insulted- the shashimi was paper thin like Nova Lox. I asked the sushi chef if this was shashimi and he said YES. My husband and I looked at it and said "come on girls lets go". We walked out! Horrible. Yamamotos is the only place I will go to - that is sushi!

So I'm a Sashimi lover and I heard that this restaurant was the place to be. Unfortunately I think things have changed drastically. The sushi chef's wife died and he subsequently committed suicide. There is even a little shrine in the back corner of the restaurant. Regardless they stuff the rolls with rice and the actual fish portions are very small. This is the first time ever that I have not been able to finish what we ordered. I actually ended up picking out the fish out of the rolls! Just too much rice. So if you are a true sushi foodie you will not enjoy this place.

Best Sushi in Kentucky, but you have to know the rules. You must have a reservation, you must be polite, you must pay in cash, and you get good classical sushi, nothing fancy, nothing American.

My first time for Seki was lunch. Based on other reviews and word of mouth there has been some change in ownership or management. The waitstaff was friendly and there was no hint that I might be tossed out on my ear if some Japanese dignitary dropped in. That actually happened to my daughter in the middle of her meal a few years back.Gyoza were tasty little dumplings steamed and then seared on one side. sushi and sashimi fresh and delicious.None better in Lex. Small salad with a ginger dressing and a miso soup accompanied. Second lunch. Same dumplings , still good Noted miso soup was perfectly clear and am not sure why. Still tasty but non-traditional from my experience. Our waitress was a very pleasant young Thai woman who explained the shop is now owned by Koreans but Mr Seki is still around and influencing the operation. I had grilled mackerel tasty but overcooked.Nice atmosphere but lunch needs some work or the reputation is going to slip.Haven't been at night and that is where the real test will be. Will be going back for sure/

this place is awesomeee. it could be described as a [albeit aging] mom-and-pop operation, but it is by far my fav place in the 859/606 area! complimentary miso soup, sencha [i think i'm wrong here] green powder tea.. the sushi and sashimi is fresh [amazing for kentucky], and simply [but with a quiet elegance] presented on a round plastic platter. but who cares about looks when you put that sushi in your mouth - the taste is exactly what it should be. the fish is fresh, the eel is delicious, the rice is perfect... seki - nothing fancy, nothing weird. no gold flake mango maki. no dim lighting. no extensive waitstaff. just good, honest sushi from good people. ps pay in cash ONLY. you also get a little japanese caramel/candy at the end of your meal. AND a jelly-gummy if you're a girl. :)

One time someone asked me "WHERE do you get Sushi in KENTUCKY?" I was quite offended and wanted to immediately fly home from Germany to take them to Seki's. This is a fabulous establishment, but you should definitely heed the rules others' have already mentioned. Many a family celebratory I've had here and we have affectionately deemed the mom in this mom and pop as the Sushi Nazi (ala Soup Nazi in Seinfeld). Don't even think about going without a reservation.
