I've heard a lot of positive comments about this joint -- all justified, as it turns out. I will never make appetizers for a party again; I'll just come here & buy them. And they have the best looking aged steaks I've seen in twenty years. Cool shabby industrial look & fab music. I want to live here. I tried a macaron, a mini berries & cream danish, and a lemon madeleine. They were all tasty and flavorful with a wonderful homebaked texture. Other folks have complained about the customer service. I didn't have any issues. All the staff with whom I interacted were young, professional, & friendly. I'll be back. And back again.

There were two employees. One seemed to be doing all the work while the other socialized and talked on her cellphone. I waited for the employee actually working. I got a Capuccino which she made correctly. To go I got a croissant that was very good, a grapefruit tart that was good but too sweet for my taste. A fennel, beet, ricotta tart that was very good and a pistachio religieuse that was not good. There was something wrong with the cream filling. The pastry shell was tasty so I ate that and through away the cream part. Everything was presented very nicely in the bakery.

This place caught my attention while I was searching for parking to partake at another restaurant. I came here for lunch with a friend and to my surprise I saw that it had a "beer garden" a bakery, butchery and a local product section. Although, a lot of the produce sold here is a bit pricey, they're very close to whole foods pricing. Now, the restaurant on the other hand was amazing simply because they're food was phenomenal. I enjoyed every last bite. From the bread basket choices which come with; artisan bread and some raisin nut bread (I personally hate raisins but didn't mind it in this bread choice I was given) the cafe Au lait was made to my liking, although I wish they'd be a bit more creative with the design, maybe a simple heart? ;) I ordered the smoked salmon dish that came with a creamy dill based sauce with capers and pickled onions on a toasted baguette. It was such a beautiful presentation and even better taste. My friend ordered the hanger salad which came with the best tasting piece of steak I've ever had! The rice salad that it came with was very delightful especially if you enjoy a ginger kick to it. My friend seemed to enjoy it as he finished his plate, but my palate didn't agree so much. Lastly, I ordered the 6 layer cake and that was just the most Devine tasting cake I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. Well worth the $7.95 it was not too sweet yet not "box or freezer thawed flavor" you can tell it was made in the bakery, it just has that great texture and taste all around. I ordered it from seeing it on a yelp review myself, and so glad that I did. I'd highly recommend getting this delicious piece of heaven!

I walked in and immediately was enamored with the look of this place. It's a beautiful venue. A few of us went to eat a late brunch after the Farmer's Market. I opened the menu and I instantly got grouchy. $16 for a burger that doesn't even come with a side? $16 for a waffle. A single waffle? No sides, no fruit, not even pretty presentation? Just a waffle on a plate. Yeah, it's a stuffed waffle, but c'mon! It looked so plain sitting there with no presentation. You put all the effort in the decor of the place, but nothing on the food. Then I decided I wanted a croissant from the front bakery to eat with my overpriced food. I went down and asked for the ricotta and spinach croissant to take back to my table. The guy tells me that it's a $1 up charge to eat it in the cafe. What? I'm already dining there, so why would I be charged for this? It's only a dollar, but it infuriates me that I have to pay extra. I almost told him I'd just eat it there in the lobby. Oh, and the croissant was not even that good. The service also sucked. After I ordered my croissant, the guy took it to the back and said he'd heat it up for me. After everyone got their food, I was still waiting on my croissant. It finally came when my friends were done eating. It shouldn't take 15 minutes to heat up a croissant. I'm all for trendy venues, good quality food, and a pricey menu, but only if it's justifiable. The food was alright, but was it worth double the price of some other places around here with good food? No. You're paying for hipster nonsense.

The Good: the food, deserts, coffee, music, the look of the place. The Bad: customer service. The Rundown: I like everything about this place aside from the customer service. The food is phenomenal, you won't find fresh breads and muffins like this anywhere. All the choices are laid out in glass cases and you just pick what you want, this is exactly as it is in Europe. Their lattes and cappuccinos are wonderful. Their desserts are not overpoweringly sweet and they are always having something new based upon the season. The downside here is the customer service, probably the worst of any restaurant I have been to in Lexington. They lack the norms of saying things like good morning, or having. A demeanor that isn't mean, just indifferent. They almost seem as though you are encroaching on their time for showing up here to eat. They don't give suggestions or have pleasant personalities. Again though, the food is great, so their is that. The Impression: the food is enough to have me come back, their breakfast muffin being my favorite. Even though the customer service is terrible, it is manageable due them not being flat out rude.

I wanted to love this place. I really did. The menu offerings and unique decor of the place appeals to me. Unfortunately, it didn't win me over. Why? One word: macaroons. I LOVE macaroons. When I saw National Boulangerie had them, I immediately located it and walked inside with the expectation I would have some amazing macaroons. (I also considered a cup of coffee, but the prices here a bit high so let that thought go). The flavor options were limited, I think there were only four or five flavors available. I ordered two: a lemon one and a strawberry one. After forking over three and a half dollars for two tiny macaroons, I was soooo excited to eat them. I unwrapped the plastic, took a bit out of the strawberry one, and..... no flavor. None. The texture of the macroon was fantastic, but the flavor was lacking. Perhaps the lemon one would be better. Nope. Again, no flavor. What. A. Huge. Bummer. It doesn't help that they were tiny. Nearly $4 for two tiny, flavorless macaroons? Booooo! You need to do better next time, National Bou. (Also, next time, I need to have more cash in wallet and try more on the menu.)

Based on brunch experience (I have not tried the restaurant or market). Food was delish, prices decent but higher, atmosphere is awesome, very cute. Great presentation of pastry. Had the mocha (off menu), very flavorful but not overly sweet or chalky. Also the Pain Au Chocolate. Flaky and tasty.

Great atmosphere. Very hip without being too over the top. You can show up in casual clothes or your night time finery and still be ok. Excellent cocktails with fresh mixing ingredients. Very knowledgeable wait staff. Gorgeous bar. Be sure to walk next door to the grocery and check out all the fine foods for purchase.

This review is based entirely on the seasonal Buche de Noel which I ordered to take to a holiday party this weekend. It was terrible, inedible ... and those are the nice adjectives I can think of to describe it.. It was almost like they said, "Let's see how dry and flavorless of a holiday dessert we can make. Ready, set, go ..." I was embarrassed to be the fool who brought this concoction, so I spread the word that someone else actually brought it. Shh ... don't tell.

(3.5 stars) A unique idea- A bakery/cafe serving French classics w some southern elements..You wouldn't find anything similar around. I have been coming here for almost 9 months, albeit irregularly. Some of the unique things I tried so far; - a great egg/bacon/gruyere muffin which was like a biscuit including a medium boiled egg - a savory bread pudding which was a great fusion of savory elements of classic french quiche and a southern bread pudding. They also serve some classic french goodies including croissants, eclairs, macarons. I would say that the quality of the baking has been a bit inconsistent. Sometimes they are good quality with the perfect taste and other times, I wonder if things came out of my disasterous kitchen. On a chalk board, you can find the list of lunch items they have for the day. Expect to find quiche, tasty sandwiches on great crusty french bread and even a bahn mi sandwich ( hint: google "bahn mi" to find the french elements in it). Prices are a tad bit high, even though what they offer is a unique concept. I wish some of their drinks would have a smaller size. I like having a good cup of tea (loose leaf) when I come here..I should call it a bowl of tea since it comes in a bowl. It's basically the size of a large drink in a to-go a cup and costs about that much but I would like the option of having a smaller size (and cheaper) tea. I would say the service has improved over the last few months. I saw one of the owners interact with customers in the early days and it's obvious that he shouldn't really be in customer service. Overall I enjoy the idea of what might become of this place. Some days are better than the others. Because of the price point of some item, this place is definetly more of "treat" instead of a regular stop for me.

Lunch was tasteless and over priced pasta. So pretentious they don't have salt and pepper on the table. The waiter paid little attention to us. But the tomato soup and bread were okay. I do understand the bakery has great offerings. Just don't know that I want to bother.

Love the look and feel of the place. Pretzel appetizer was delicious. After that, downhill. We told the hostess we had not eaten here before and asked what she recommended. Her response? I have no idea; I've never eaten here! Ooookay. The waiter came to see what we wanted to order But didn't know what the specials were. My friend ended up with the salmon special and ordered a salad that was very bland and cost $5.00 on top of the $30 for the special. The salmon was delicious but came with a smaller version of salad she paid $5 for - it would have been nice to know ordering a salad was unnecessary. I ordered the pasta and it was too spicy to eat. I literally could not eat it. When the waiter finally came to check on us, he noticed my dinner was uneaten and offered a free dessert. I did order the lemon/blueberry pie and it was delicious. The coffee was served Luke warm, if u like that then it was fine. All in all, the wait staff was very unhelpful, unconcerned, and uninterested - and we were the only diners there! Maybe for a reason. Sorry to say, disappointed, but I don't pretend to be a foodie.

The decor is quite unique, I will give them that. It is the reason that I would recommend anyone visit, at least once. It definitely doesn't have a "southern hospitality" feel to it. I tried the ham and cheese croissant which are apparently cooked in the morning and then set in the case, not kept heated. That seemed a bit different to me, as I like my ham and cheese options warm. I am not a big coffee drinker, so I ordered a soda...$2.95 for a soda! I like the urban/French atmosphere but the prices are ridiculous. I finished with my first ever macaroon, I know, I know, I am the last person on earth to try a macaroon. I ordered the mint chocolate macaroon, but it wasn't my cup of tea. Again, I would recommend that you try it for yourself, and don't take my experience as advise on this area of food options, I am the girl who doesn't like macaroons.

Edited - a complete turn around. Now a frequent breakfast stop for me. Staff - awkward and quirky cute girls mostly. I kind of dog it. Coffee - tasty but $3.25 a cup Food - the baked goods have really caught their stride. I come for the quiche though. Ambiance - this is where they excel. The decor is cool, the setting is nice, the location is great.

One star is exactly what our Sunday brunch experience felt like: The skylights and the decor of the dining room are the reasons for the one star. The regular menu is very limited. The special menu on the chalk board looked slightly more promising, but it is a joke to charge $16.95 for a salad with no discernible exotic ingredients and no protein unless you count goat cheese as a protein. Ordered chicken waffle, which turned out to have too much breading and was very greasy. The staff was not attentive at all. For the high price they charge and for the presumably chic and modern setting, one would expect quality service. What we got were pleasant smiles and incompetent service: The water was never refilled. We had to get up and walk to the breakfast area to ask (for the second time) for milk for coffee that we ordered. They seat new parties right next to each other even though many tables were empty. We could hear the breath AND every word of people next to us given how close the tables are. It was so distracting and complete lack of privacy that we felt uncomfortable talking to each other. This is not NYC! Pushing tables close together pretending you were an NYC restaurant does not make your food taste any better, nor does it justify the outrageously overpriced menu. Will NEVER recommend this place to even people I do not like!

Lunch was great and very girley. Really fine pea w/sausage soup, Also, a quite tasty quiche and salad. Price at over $20 each seems somewhat high.

A lovely bakery with delicious croissants! They are room temp but that's how it's done in most of Europe. I found the Ham & Cheese Croissant to be perfect and my son approved of the Chocolate Croissant, go figure;) I can't wait to go back and buy bread for dinner but I'm afraid I'll be quite indecisive when it comes to dessert...there are just so many delectable things to choose from! Pistachios, fruit tarts and chocolate oh my! Pretentious? Maybe a little but it's attractiveness, it's whisper of another continent and the flavors rising SELLS. So treat yourself to something special, try something other than your typical chain-restaurant folks!

This place is one of my favs. The coffee and tea selection is excellent. The pastries are by far the best in town. The ambiance is one of the coolest. It's relatively small, but feels larger because it opens up into National Provisions (lunch/dinner - so good!). If you appreciate coffee, this place is a must.

My brother brought home a delicious baguette and I was dying to know where it came from. Thankfully, my mom finally let me in on the "Surprise" and took me to experience National Boulangerie myself! This little bakery has quiche, croissants, and other tasty treats in a very cute environment. As other reviews mentioned, coffee does come in a bowl (but cups are available if requested). Although things do seem quite pricey, and there was very little room to sit, they were running a steady business for having been open only about a month. I'll likely be back the next time I'm in town, and will hopefully see that they've expanded so that I can stay a while longer.

Want to visit France without a plane ticket? Just step through the doors of this establishment. Fresh breads everyday, SanPelligrirno drinks and the best Espresso and Coffees! I did not need to add anything to the coffee. You can, if you like, sweeten using the raw sugar cubes provided on the tables. There is also a free water cart beside the door if you want something else after your coffee. And the desserts oh my goodness children! Watch out for the Lemon Meringue Cake Tart! Was responsible for my fall from grace diet wise anyway!

I tried it again and it was fabulous, I am hard to please but also I am very fair. They have replaced the old staff with new, friendly staff, and they have a great smile on their face. Food is great and they make the best Bloody Mary & Mimosa !! I am happy they transitioned this place to a very friendly French place that greets everyone with an open arm. Tres bien !!

Wonderful brunch! Great ambience and I loved the ambience. The quiche was delicious! We also had the eggs in a basket which was very good. And the coffee was great too! A great place for a date or for meeting up with friends!

I made my first actual visit to this restaurant today and I couldn't be happier! The decor is awesome and it made me feel like I was in a much bigger city! The person who waited on me could not be nicer!! I had one of the best sandwiches of my life..the Caprese! I get this sandwich at different spots in NyC and this one trumped all of them! The bread was fantastic! A garlic focaccia with actual garlic cloves baked on top...plus it was salted! The pesto was perfect as was the mozz and tomatoes! I had another salty caramel cookie...seriously to die for! This has to be one of the best restaurants in Lexington!!

Authentic cuisine (mixed with some more upscale American classics), friendly service, and a great selection of tea. Because of the price it's not some place I could go all the time, but it is a great treat and Lexington's best French bakery.

5 stars all day. Now I have only had coffee many times, egg flat bread something yummy see pics, fruit tart (who you calling a fruit) and couple other pastries. But no other place in Lexington or starts like it. You can see the quality, smell it, and if you dare taste it. Everything about it does not say Lex and that's fine by me. It's welcomed and on my short list. Walk around to your right and find more greats with beer hall. jM

    A. Baked Goods: I have tried their croissants, baguettes and religuese (think brioche meets eclair). The quality was good but the baked goods were always cold. Zuni Cafe's pastries I would rate currently as better in taste. Sunshine Bakery's warm, crusty croissants I also rate better. I'd give National a B on baked goods. If they can find a way of keeping the baked goods warm and fresh, the taste would improve. B. Decor: the renovations to this space are nice but give a feeling of coldness like the baked goods. The actual bakery ovens do not appear to be on-site because there is no warmth of baking bread or that wonderful smell. The ambiance is nice but not friendly or warm. This is not a coffee shop to feel at home for studying or reading. C. Coffee/Tea: I asked for a tea latte and was told they don't make them in spite of having the ingredients. Service both times was slow. In part the shop does a rather elaborate tea setup that is better fitted to a tea shop with sit down service. I've lived twice for a month in France and never have I been served coffee and tea in a bowl. I love my cat, but I don't want to drink like him. Bizarre and rather challenging to hold. Get some cups. Also for a place a former barista friend described as the "most pretentious coffee shop I've ever been in", it's odd they use bathroom brown paper hand towels as napkins. I will return for the occasional baguette but National currently leaves me as cold as the baked good and marble slab bistro tables. Hopefully in time they can bake onsite and have warmth, friendliness and cups.

This place is odd. I think that is the best way to start this review. My friend and I met and ex co worker here for lunch. The front seating area is compacted with small table shoved against a bench lining the wall with a chair facing the wall. This style of dining is very French. All of the places in Paris were this way. The bench itself is covered in shiny bright red pleather. Loved it. Soon as you step in the door you see a couple of counters and display shelves on either side. They prepare quite a few breads, sandwiches, salads, drinks, cakes, and cookies. It all looked really yummy. I had a bahn mi special and a lattee. We ended up sitting in the back area behind the counter where it is a big country style dinner table. The owner was sitting there reading the paper. The food was great. The bread of my sandwich had the best crunch and flavor of bahn mi was very European. I have to say...I quite enjoyed it. I realize that if someone just walked in here not knowing that it is meant to be close to the French style of dining that they might hate it. The sandwiches are served at room temp and are made early that morning. I will be back for sure. It was a great nod to my time spent in Paris. Loved it.

The baguettes are amazing. I really like the decor as well; they've done a great job of turning what I last saw as a burned out derelict building into a very attractive space. They have a wide selection of breads, pastries and cookies. Their chocolate croissants are quite good. My only complaints are that I wasn't able to tell if the place was open when driving by; it looks pretty dark from the outside. The interior also didn't seem to be very well heated.

I love the people behind the counter, they're always super helpful and maybe they're busy...but they will get to you. I don't need to be coddled, I know what I want and they have it. TRY THE RAISIN AND NUT BREAD!!! HOLY PAJAMAS!

This place has potential, but is not as good as its local competition. My husband and I tasted several items here and took more home with us. The caramel Bourbon tart, a "sweet and salty" cookie, and baguette were very good. The croissants and eclairs were mediocre and prices seem a little high. While the bakery is visually very pretty, it does not feel at all welcoming. The owner was there while we were and was extremely cold and distant, as were the servers. The coffee is served in bowls with a glass beaker of cream, which just felt sort of awkward and unnecessarily pretentious. I really hope this place improves and will probably try it again in a few months, but for now, I'd much rather spend my time and money at Sunrise Bakery.

This place rocks! My husband and I went for breakfast, and everything was amazing. We ordered the ham and cheese croissant, a chorizo goat cheese pastry, a sweet and salty cookie, an eclair, and this really cool baguette that consisted of a bunch of miniature baguettes made into one large one. The cookie was one of the best I've had--very dense and chewy with pretzel pieces, chocolate, and toffee. Oh. Em. Gee. It's a beautiful space, very industrial and modern. Also, they have a bunch of fun jams, chocolates, and coffee to browse about. I'll have to go back for a cake. They're dead on the type of cakes you see at Milkbar in New York. The only problem is they don't do slices, so you have to justify spending around $30 for a whole cake, which wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

A solid effort. I've personally heard a lot of mixed reviews: some raving and some abysmal. I can see both sides. The place isn't the most conspicuous. The friend I met here for breakfast couldn't find the place. Look out for the window and then you're good. It's off of a random offshoot of Winchester Road. The interior is extremely appealing. You can see all of the pastries: sweets on one side and savory on the other. The tables are small and cozy. Perfect for one or two, but not especially convenient if it's crowded. The food is very good. I had a spinach and ricotta croissant and a chocolate tart (absolutely wonderful/amazing/beautiful, it was a beautiful chocolate tart). It's true: they aren't warm. My friend got the goat cheese and sundried tomato quiche. It was good. It would have been better warm. Don't stress about it and go for the sweets or the items for which heat won't matter. They make good eats: no question about it. To summarize, it's good. It's pretty. It's not the best for experience. Getting through the line takes time. Their personalities aren't going to brighten your day. There's no obvious place to put your dishes if you're eating there. It's small, it's cramped. Doesn't mean you shouldn't go at least once. If that really bothers you, go get something to take out. Again, they have beautiful chocolate tarts. Chocolate tarts make life better. Therefore, National Boulangerie is A-OK in my book.

This place feels awesome and the food is great. It's too bad that the owner is a dick. Last time in - Asked for salt, owner said no. WHAT? This time - asked if they could turn down fans. Cold and like a whirlwind. Wait staff all trying to be accommodating but owner says some people are hot. We asked people in front of waiter- r u hot. They respond - NO we are freezing! We won't be back to any of these restaurants

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at this quaint French bakery. I love the atmosphere and the food. Their baguettes are amazing and the croissants are some of the best i've ever had. I also thoroughly enjoy their Bahn Mi sandwich lunch (which comes with a choice of chips or a cookie) which I found to be well-portioned. I didn't get a chance to try the desserts but they looked fantastic. The coffee is also delicious and I enjoyed that it came in a soup bowl instead of the traditional mug. My only suggestion is that they get dish tubs. It was kind of gross to see piles of dishes surrounding the self-service water container and clean glasses. Regardless of this small detail, I had a great experience and will definitely be back.

After seeing pictures of the National Boulangerie, I was extremely excited to visit. The décor looked nice and all of the pastries looked very well made. Unfortunately, both the visit and the food were sub-par. To begin with, the customer service was rude; for instance, my friend and I bought two croissants for ~$6 and paid with a ten. The cashier then retorted, "Do you have anything smaller than a ten?" What type of establishment can break a ten! Then, we asked for two plates (since they served it on one plate) and the cashier snobbishly replied, "We don't have any more plates...." Thus, we just down at an overcrowded table and ate our breakfast. Still hungry, we then decided to order a quiche, and it was disgusting. It was burnt and smothered in horseradish and had an overly cloying taste of mustard. In the end, it was not the food that gave the bakery 1 star. It is their arrogant attitude and rude demeanor that has driven me away from this place. The staff that I encountered was abrasive, thus causing me to never want to come back.

So far, so good. Still fairly new, but this place has amazing potential. Very crowded on a Saturday. Nice looking breads, very nice pastries. Deserts looked fantastic. I'll need a few trips to taste everything. If they expand as planned into the entire building, this will be a major destination place and could lead to some development along Walton Rd. I'd like to see more seating so that we could spend more time drinking coffee and eating.

Update from 12/7 review: OK. I went back. I swear I want this place to be good... and will likely go back to give them a final chance. First: I got another baguette; didn't look so burned as last one on top. Got home and realized the bottom was totally burned & charred. Still trying to get that nasty charcoal taste out of my mouth. PLEASE... get the temp & bake time down. It is such a shame you are ruining what could be great bread with carelessness. Second: I got some very well presented quiches. They were pretty to look at. Took them home & popped them in the oven to give a warm-up. After about 15 minutes at 250F, I was disappointed to bite in to a raw dough crust. Disgusting. However, like the bread, the basic flavors & textures have great potential... if they can get the cooking down. Again, I so want this place to work. I am writing this more for the owners than anyone else. Please, please, please get your bread temps & times right... maybe taste the bread. And, if the quiche is sold raw to be fully cooked by the buyer... let us know. Will try again. One more time before I give up.

Not enjoyable on the first visit and we are not sure if or when there will be another. Their pastry shop at this location is great, that portion of the National Avenue establishment is where any further accolades stop. As for the Boulangerie, our dining spot for the evening, the menu is deceptive, offering a prix fixe but every item offered on the night of our visit and from other nights it seems after reading other reviews, had an up-charge ranging from a $2-5. The burger, on the dinner menu, was listed at $18.95 and came with nothing, fries were an added $4.95 and if you wanted cheese, another $2. I decided on the chicken, which was listed as 1/2 Chicken on the menu, when I ordered the waitress at least said it wasn't quite 1/2 Chicken but closer to 1/4 Chicken. Then why put it on the menu as such? There were 5 of us dinning. When the entrees came to the table, 3 came out first and 8 minutes later the other two at our table got their entree. When my chicken arrived it consisted of a very small leg with a very small portion of what looked like a cut off piece of thigh. Attached to this was what appeared to be the entire rest of the back bone of the chicken including the tail. This was all that was on the plate. They offered nothing, no small amount of a green or potato. When I mentioned it to the waitress I was told I should have ordered a salad. I will not even go into the attitude of the waitress we had or the host, which by the way was the owner. Lastly, I will give you our bar experience that evening. After we were seated, it was over 15 minutes until we were asked if we would like anything from the bar. After we placed our bar order it was another 20 minutes until it came. When it arrived it was not correct. My vodka was all tonic, but I didn't say anything, well at least not to the staff, but I did make a comment when the bill arrived and saw I paid $10 for a glass of tonic. Two at the table ordered Bombay & tonic. When they arrived 1 of the 2 gins was not Bombay, serious Bombay drinkers I might add, they know their gin. When this was mentioned to the waitress, asking, "this is not what I ordered", the waitress said, "what is it", he said, "it's not Bombay so I don't know what it is". She took it away and 15 minutes later showed up at the table and said they had run out of Bombay, my guest asked, "then why was I served something I didn't order?". No response! Then he asked what type of gin do you have? She left and 10 minutes later came back and spewed out a list that finally had something he would drink and ordered. You get the point, 15 minutes later he gets his drink, others at the table took this opportunity while our waitress was at the table to order a 2nd drink, I didn't. I figured my quinine limit had been reached for the evening.

A friend brought me a chocolate tart from this bakery and I loved it!! Very good quality. The chocolate mousse in the tart was full bodied, the chocolate on top was gooey and the little decoration made with some sort of sugar was nice and crisp for a good texture contrast. Because of this great experience, I went myself and got two, one for me and one for my husband. Right off the bat in the store I noticed the inconsistencies in the tart crusts. One looked like it had actually been cooked in a tart mold, the other looked a bit hand formed. Either way, I raved about the tart to my husband and when he ate his first and wasn't blown away (in fact, the chocolate lover didn't even eat the whole thing), I was confused. I ate mine and understood why. The tart filling seemed as if it split or something. It wasn't creamy like the first one I had, but rather separated.... The chocolate on top was not gooey and the nice texture contrast from the decoration was not there, it was a soft gooey mess! I was not happy with this choice at all and even more disappointed by the almost $7 I paid for each one. I think that they had a good product, but the inconsistencies and high prices make me not want to take the risk of going back...

We went to National Boulangerie after some friends gave it great reviews. I love bakeries and was excited to hear of such a unique spot opening up here in town. The space itself is quite lovely and has a lot of potential. We planned our trip a few days in advance - we were going to spend the first morning of winter break trying a few of the pastries at the new bakery before doing a little last-minute holiday shopping. (Those of you who are either in school or have been can relate to the feeling of excitement and celebration that comes with the first day of winter break.) So, you can imagine our disappointment when we were greeted with a frown and a forced "hello" from the woman behind the bakery counter. The interaction that followed was unpleasant at best - not a single smile from the staff - in fact, I felt as though I was putting them out by asking for service. I have honestly never been treated so poorly at any establishment in Lexington. I felt as though our business was unwanted. Perhaps we are not the kind of patrons they are hoping for - I am certainly not wealthy or well-known in town, although my money is as good as the next person's. We spent nearly $20 on a loaf of bread, two pastries and a package of three (stale) cookies. The bottom line for me is that it is overpriced and the service is awful - I can't even chalk it up to youthful ignorance, because the woman behind the counter was old enough to know how to treat people. I don't expect to be treated like a queen, but I do expect to be treated like a person. Overall, an incredible disappointment.

We were impressed w the ambience of the bakery. When we arrived home however, we discovered that we did not have the correct order. Shame on us for not checking. There were no chocolate tortes in our order.
