The best Thai food I've ever had - and I'm a Thai food junkie! They make it spicy enough for my taste buds which is rare. The pad wunsen is to die for and the staff is sweet.

This is definitely my favorite Thai restaurant in Lexington. The food tastes delicious, it's always hot, and the ingredients taste fresh. For starters, try an order of Mai Thai Rolls. You get two that are filled with little translucent noodles and vegetables. On top, is a sweet and spicy sauce that is just amazing. (Think of a spicy duck sauce.) The soups are also good here if that is what you're looking for. For dinner, I stick with Pad Thai. I get mine without onions and choose chicken as the protein. The chicken is tender and flavorful. And you can get it as spicy as you can handle it. I typically go 3-4 out of 5. The portion is huge, so I doubt you'll leave hungry. Must try!!

If you are in Lexington and want pad Thai then go to Bangkok House on campus. If you can't make it there or they are closed for some reason then this place is an ok substitute. I've only ever had the pad Thai, egg rolls, and spring rolls here. The pad Thai has good flavor and of the style I like. I ask for no onions which can overwhelm the dish. I've been here 4 times right at dinner time and there's usually no one else dining in. Maybe they do their business through take out.

So long story short, my family has been spoiled with Thai food by living in Florida. We have tried this place a few times thinking that it was just the time of day. We have also always got the meals to go because being with two small kids makes things difficult to eat out sometimes. This last time was no different. The place is always clean but doesn't always have a lot of people. This could be due to the fact we drop by around lunch time or late lunch when they are about to close for their change over. Ordered two chicken pad Thai, a cup of wonton soup and four egg rolls. The price is what get me every time though. About $30 without tip. And they are lunch portions of pad Thai. The egg rolls are charged individually instead of as a 2 or 4 pack deal. The pad Thai is sub par in mind and my wife's opinions. The noodles aren't fully cooked through. She doesn't get spice and says it was bland. She took one look at the wonton soup and said she wasn't eating it. I tried it and is bland as well, too many green onion pieces and cilantro sprigs, and the wontons are overly floppy and not filled enough. My pad Thai had mild spice because, in my experience, you cannot know how much spice is mild or medium or hot at ANY Thai restaurant. I've gotten mild that has cleared my sinuses and mild that left me wanting more. Their mild leaves me wanting more. We won't be trying them anymore. Too pricey for what we get, AT LUNCH.

Damn good Thai food, as good or better than what I get in California. The dishes were authentic and the sauces were fab. Mai Thai's food tasted authentic, and it had no added sugar from what I could tell. (Added sugar in Thai food is really one of my pet peeves.) The wonton soup had the right type of wontons, a yummy filling, and the broth was delectable. The Tom Yum soup with chicken had fresh vegetables and the spicy broth was just right. What can I say? I really enjoyed my meal that night. I got it delivered through a delivery service, too. It was so convenient!

It was late, I was in the area and still getting my bearings to this place I have no idea where all of the ethnic food haunts are. Mai Thai was the first place to show up as the closest when I did a Yelp search for Thai. Ordered Chicken Massaman Curry over the phone, appeared 15 minutes later to pick it up and no fuss at all. Got it home and it was very good, flavorful and as good as I've had it in most places. Well other than I didn't specify heat and they didn't ask, but that was my fault and not theirs; it wasn't as spicy but now I know for the next time. Best part is, extremely reasonably priced for thai takeout which surprised me coming from other places. Will surely be back again.

A mixed bag of feelings here for Mai Thai. It was my first experience with Thai food (age 19, as a first-time college young-un venturing out of tiny Redneck, KY), and sparked my lifelong love of spicy, exotic flavors. At the old location on S. Limestone, right across from UK hospital, I have so many fond memories of meeting up with classmates for lunch in-between classes, or grabbing a take-out bite with my BFF as we headed to Young Library. We all loved Mai Thai, and obsessed about the food during phone dates once we all parted ways to go our different paths. I've since gotten to experience tons of other Thai restaurants across the country and have since found newer, better and now-favorited restaurants. And, we used to joke in undergrad, that the quality of the food reflected the mood of the chef: some days that pad wun sen could just rock your world with its delicate deliciousness; and then other days you'd get some major bummers, like cold burnt spring rolls or overcooked pad Thai. Didn't faze us ever, though, Mai Thai was our one (and at the time) and pretty much only Thai option around campus. Service could be hit or miss, as is especially common where college students are the majority hirees (sorry, it's the truth). The ambiance wasn't great, you usually have little kids running around or crawling on the floor (I like kids, I HAVE a kid, but that just isn't appealing at a restaurant), and sometimes the owners seemed downright unwelcoming, but again, that never fazed us (note: no sushi on the menu, but they do sell wine/beer). I haven't been to Mai Thai for several years, but I decided to stop by there for lunch a couple weeks back while I was driving near the area. They have since relocated to Tiverton Shopping Center, which offers better parking, albeit it lacks some of the charm it had at its former standalone location. They close after lunch at 2PM and reopen for dinner at 5PM. The service was friendly and quick. I ordered steamed spring roll and chicken pad Thai. I had never ordered steamed spring rolls from Mai Thai, so I was expecting the more standard rice paper-wrapped roll encasing cold thin noodles, lettuce, basil, etc. with a dipping sauce on the side. Instead, I got a steamy-hot, rolled-up crepe-like roll, almost eggy and doughy in texture, filled with pork, tofu and carrot. It was tasty but not what I was expecting from a spring roll - and it was literally drowning in sweet Thai chili sauce, more sweet than chili unfortunately. Not my favorite thing, but I ate it all because I was hungry. Now the chicken pad Thai was a serious letdown. Some of the worse pad Thai I have ever had. The noodles were so finely minced up that it was disconcerting, like they been stuck to a pan and scraped off. The texture was gummy and dry. There was very little chicken, the egg bits had that unappealing hardened look from sitting out too long. I hated the peanuts too, they were SOFT and cooked to burnt nubs. I was taken aback by how the entire dish lacked overall in flavor, color, texture, and freshness. I felt like I was eating microwaved leftovers of one of those Annie Chun's cartons at the store. A red flag warning of the pre-made pad Thai (because there is no way - ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that you could tell me that that pad Thai was made fresh-to-order) was when the server didn't ask me to specify a heat level for the dish, and instead just asked if I wanted a spice tray when she brought the food. I unenthusiastically nibbled on it and left most of it. Total bill without tip was about $15, outrageous for how bad the food was. I am giving it two stars because (1) I would go back, if friends insisted on it (but I would try to convince them to go somewhere else), and (2) just for old time's sake.

I got pad thai, green curry with chicken and the Thai roll. The food was some of the worst Thai I have ever had. I was unimpressed and didn't finish a single item. The pad Thai tasted like it been caked on a pan. The green curry was the most edible part of the meal so I ate half. I don't know if people not liking their food is normal because the server did not pick up the full plates as she returned them to the kitchen. The best part of my experience is the confirmed case of food poisoning I subsequently experienced. Stay away!

I found a sliver of metal (lord knows how that ended up there) in my food. Spoke with management for about 20 minutes trying to get my money back. Said they'd credit me for future purchase. I don't know about you all, but metal in my food is kind of a deal breaker for future business. They said there was nothing they could do. After more arguing they said they could refund me the food that had the metal in it, but not the whole meal. Outside of being a horrible business model for customer service, what decent human being wouldn't offer a full refund??? She said it "was a one in a thousand thing." Is that really supposed to make me feel better? Only after I mentioned legal recourse did she decide to give the full amount back. Absolutely unbelievable. And then she had the gall to call ME a bad customer. I'm sorry if I hold a restaurant to the standard of not putting harmful substances in their food, accident or not. Apparently the customer is only right after the restaurant is proven wrong.

This is phenomenal Thai food. The pad thai and pad cashew, in particular, are exceptional. The family that owns/runs the restaurant are wonderful people that take great pride in their food and service. Many of us miss the restaurant not being closer to down town and campus, but the trek to south Lexington is worth it

I've never reviewed a restaurant that I've never eaten at - but there's a first time for every thing. I ordered take out Pad Thai from Mai Thai this afternoon. The reviews on Yelp were decent, but the reviews on Google were horrible - so I knew it was a toss up. The lady on the phone was nice and friendly and took my order. Fifteen minutes later I showed up at the restaurant - and no one was there. One man was in the restaurant finishing his lunch and one girl (who I presume worked there because she later went in the back room) sat in the corner. No one came out to greet me, so I made my way to the cash register and I stood there for nearly 5 minutes. Nothing. No one came from the back. The girl sitting in the corner said nothing. I thought about calling the attention of the person shuffling around in the backroom, but I stopped - because how good can a place be that has one customer at noon on Wednesday? I assumed it was fate and I left Pad Thai-less and went to Panera - which by the way was jam packed and had awesome service. Never again, Mai Thai. Your food will never be good enough to make up for the abyssal service.

When Mai Thai was on campus, I recalled it being overpriced and sort of meh, and definitely not worth the fight through traffic. When it moved to Tiverton, visiting it was not on my priority list. We tried it yesterday and were pleasantly surprised! We shared an order of steamed spring rolls as an appetizer. They came out quite warm and crepe like, casually rolled up and not folded at the ends like egg rolls. They were also huge, maybe eight inches long. Tragically, for me, they contained thick slivers of bacon (which hadn't been listed on the menu) and I'm allergic to pork, so I couldn't partake. My husband pretended to feel sorry for me, but he was clearly thrilled to be eating my spring roll. (They also contained cucumber, carrots, tofu, and basil.) The spring rolls were slathered in warm sweet and sour sauce, which I would wager was actually homemade. It lacked that tell tale industrial goo-like texture that's so standard to sweet-n-sour sauces. I kind of file sweet and sour sauce under a "ketchup" sort of heading-- I don't expect it to be homemade when I'm dining out. If it's not homemade, I'm still going to give Mai Thai props for buying such a tasty version of this condiment. The flavor was a lot more complex, with a bright vinegar sour and a mellow sweetness. I never thought I would actually write a whole paragraph on sweet and sour sauce. Sorry. For an entree, I had Pad Kee Mow, a wide noodle and vegetable stir fry, with tofu. The tofu came in soft and delicate chunks, not breaded and deep fried. To me this was a major bonus as most Thai places fry up their tofu which sort of nixes the health benefits, packing in lots of extra oily calories and not really enhancing the tofu in any way. I really love plain tofu that's had a chance to soak up some sauce, and that's what I got. Hurray! The dish was very fresh had a wonderful variety of vegetables and the portion was huge. My husband ordered the green curry, which may have been the best green curry we've had in Lexington. There was a lot of complexity to it, we could easily pick out the flavors of the basil, lime, fish sauce, garlic and a bit of sweet. We were really happy to re-discover Mai Thai and look forward to exploring the menu more. (For Lexingtonians comparing Thai places, the curry here was thinner and less coconutty than what Planet Thai serves up, but it more than made up for that in complexity, which PT's curries entirely lack. The simple, luxurious curries at Planet Thai are sort of in their own category to me. At any rate, if you're looking for a more interesting curry, Mai Thai has it!)

Eric and I are on the quest for the best Pad Thai anywhere. So far, our two favorites restaurants for Pad Thai are in Lexington, KY. (I'm not kidding) Love this place. It has become one of my favorite Thai restaurants and I travel everywhere. Basil eggplant is awesome and medium veggie pad thai is very good. Weird TV shows playing while we eat, but just tune it out. Sometimes it comes out warm and not hot, so not sure if it sits too long before the waitress brings it, but still tasty. With Eric being gluten-free now, we checked the sauce for the pad thai and it does not contain soy sauce, so thumbs up for that too. Ambiance is not great and it is located in a strip mall, but they are making efforts to dress it up a bit. 5 stars for basil eggplant and pad thai dish 3 stars for ambiance

I don't know why but most good Thai, Chinese and Ramen restaurants seem to have beaten seats and a family atmosphere. The owner's kids run around the place with the older family members sitting at a table conversing, all them while a restaurant seamlessly operating around them. The decor is a bit past its prime showing slight wear from customers coming and going. But the food is the hidden jewel here. Hot sweet egg-rolls cooked to perfection. The peanut sauce is chunky with peanuts adding a cool sweet crunch to contrast with the chicken. The pad Thai is the best I've had if just a little under spiced. I recommend the garlic pork to any garlic lovers out there. The food was magnanimous, with a relaxed inviting family atmosphere. This is the place to come for Thai food if you near give it a shoot you will not be disappointed.

Had the chicken pad thai. Wonderful. Large plate full of scrumptious noodles, peanuts, chicken, bean sprouts and the like. Service was fast and friendly. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is because the pad thai could have used a little more citrus flavor; a small lime wedge just didn't cut it.

Mai Thai makes the best Pad Thai that I have ever had. I travel often for work and have yet to find anyone's Pad Thai that comes close to Mai Thai's. I just wish I still lived in Lexington so I could enjoy it!

Perhaps I am spoiled from the great thai food in other cities we have lived in (we are new to Lexington), but Mai Thai did not wow me. The menu selections for dinner are around $9 for a typical curry or stir fry dish, $7.50 lunch specials for these dishes Monday-Friday. The food was not bad but just not memorable for my husband or I. He had the yellow curry (meat, or tofu as he chose, and potatoes) and I had the thai basil stir fry. The thai iced tea was just not good at all, syrupy almost. Perhaps other dishes are better and more unique here, but, as thai food lovers, we will not be rushing back to Mai Thai.
