In 2015, a company is releasing a $30,000 Apple watch that is diamond encrusted. Another company is offering a British racing bicycle that is also gold plated, but worth about $400,000. You may ask yourself, why? No, really. Ask yourself. I give you permission. Ready? Because it is catered towards those who like to throw away their vast sums of currency. Are you one of those people? Then, this place is perfect for you. Being one of those people from the lower income ranks of 'Murrrca, I was thoroughly impressed by the coat check at the front. I have never loaned my coat to someone for a small piece of numbered plastic before and was nervous because I knew didn't have any cash for the ransom when the Great Coat Hostage Crisis of Gratz Park would be resolved at the end of dinner. I had to borrow a greenback from a friend. Strike one. Also, it was kind of silly to give my jacket to him because it wasn't like he locked it up in a vault in another room or anything. He hung it up in front of us about three times as slow as someone would do it at home by themselves. I was not impressed. We sat down and ordered some drinks. My colleague had to use his phone's flash light to read the drink menu. Now, his eyesight isn't good enough to demonstrate good ol' 'Murrrcan air superiority during the first Gulf War, but he doesn't have two pounds of glass hanging off the bridge of his nose either. The lighting was nice, but there were some dark spots and the menu text could have been a little bigger, especially with all the white space. I suppose it was a managerial decision to save money on ink at the expense of customer ease of ordering. The highlight of the evening were the appetizers. Everything we ordered tasted amazing and gave us hope and allowed us to dream like we were children again. I thought about how I would be famous and make a difference in the world. We were riding high on a magic carpet ride and then our entrees came out. Friend had king crap spaghetti or something. He said it was too salty to eat and the noodles tasted like ramen. Another friend got the steak. It was overcooked and they made him a new one and it was still overcooked. We shook our heads in disbelief. We were lied to our faces. Our dreams would never come true. I would live the rest of my life in absolute obscurity. I ordered pickle brine fried chicken and it was drizzled with some sort of sweet sauce. The parts that were exposed to the air ended up being extremely salty, which is the nature of the beast and I should have been expecting salty, but this was like North Korean salt mines salty. This amount of salt would give kill someone with peanut allergies before the actual peanuts killed them. Unfortunately, in North Korea, you only get one strike. Distilled, you're out. Wait. It's not over, yet. After imbibing and giving our thanks to Bacchus, or Dionysus for you silly Greeks, we got dessert. They very generously gave us a portion that would be fit for an embryo with flavors that would suit an embryo with undeveloped taste buds. By the end of the night, we wouldn't have any money to pay for a Lyft on a Learjet. We had to ride a car like the common folk. All in all, if you can't give away your money fast enough to the peasants, you might as well come down here with your fellow lords and ladies and impress them with visually stimulating plating and small portions that make you feel like you are really fancy. Not an exaggeration. A piece of Wonder Bread toast with veggies on top as an appetizer cost $10. You could feed a family of one at McDonald's for $10 and still have food left over. If you have this much money to burn on a dinner, get pizza afterward.

Less than impressed, my wife and I ate here about a month ago, or should I say snacked? The food is completely over priced and under portioned. I only give it two stars instead of one because it was edible. After leaving I had no other choice but to cook a second dinner at home to fight off the hunger pangs. I spent atleast 130$ for two meals. We do not drink I might add so that is just bare food giving the place a shot. We loved johnathans and considered ourselves regulars so we ASSUMED Distilled would cater to the same kind of foody. We were so wrong. Our appatizer was absolutely worthless, the ambiance looked like it was purchased from home goods (I love the store but I'm not going to spend excessive amounts of money to dine in a resturant that can't spend excessive amounts of money to decorate) or server was alright I liked her but my wife didn't so who knows. I ordered fish. What did I get? A 3oz cut seared served with a pile of sprouts on top...the sides described might have been in there but I couldn't find anything besides a tiny dab of topping...if you want to charge someone 30$ a plate put atleast 10$ worth of food on there and dazzle me with pretty lights... I highly doubt I'll be back and from my current perspective I wouldn't ever recommend this place to any of my friends.

First time I came to this restaurant I don't know if it's the fact that I loved Jonathan's so much and wouldn't give this place a shot or maybe it just wasn't up to par at the time. Long story short, the staff has gone from below average to very good in just a few months time and the food is much better prepared.. not to mention the layout is always magnificent at this restaurant. I always say SHOW ME THE MEATS and Distilled has maybe the best meats (steak in particular) in town. Very tender. A+ for improvement!

We went to Distilled on their second weekend and I am hoping that the extremely poor service we experienced was a result of growing pains and won't continue into the future. We had an 8:15 reservation and were not seated until almost 9pm. At this point, the restaurant was still full, but as we waited 15 minutes to order drinks, tables started to trickle out. In the meantime, a table of 6 (we were 4) was seated behind us, their drink orders were taken and they were given bread. When my companions ordered their drinks, I requested some bread for the table. Our drinks were delivered, the specials recited to us and our waitress disappeared for another 15 minutes. When she came back, we ordered salads and our entrees before she could run off again, and I again requested some bread. At this point, I was out of water, which the waitress did not seem to notice. The salads were served approximately 20 minutes later and she said she had just put some bread in the oven for us. I asked for more water and she said she would be back. She came back 10 minutes later with the bread, which bordered on cold and was definitely not fresh out of the oven and no water. I again asked for water, which was not brought to me. Another fifteen minutes later, our salad plates had not been cleared, but a bus boy brought out our entrees. We juggled some plates around and replaced our salad plates with our entrees. I asked him for water, which he brought in a timely manner. At this point, our waitress had only one other table, an 8 top. After we had all finished our entrees she came and asked if everything had come out alright and if she could bring us anything and if my friends would like more drinks. As we were finished, we didn't need anything further, other than water for the table. She reappeared about 10 minutes later with this and asked if we wanted dessert. At this point, we had been seated over an hour and a half and did not wish to stay for another hour to wait for dessert. We requested our checks and that process took over another half hour. For a considerable portion of this time, our waitress had only the one other table, which she was incredibly attentive to. It seemed that she could not be bothered with the four of us. As for the food, it's hard to be impartial about it as our experience was so tainted by the service. Our salads were good. Two of us had the short ribs, which were well cooked but somewhat bland. Another friend had the grits, which were delicious, but she felt overpriced for the portion size. The star of the meal, however, was the burger. It was so good we all passed it around to try. I will give Distilled another chance, but it will be in a few months. I hope the service issues were either growing pains or one bad apple, but there are too many other nice restaurants in Lexington at that price point to justify spending that much on a meal that was tainted by frustration.

Had a great experience at this new Restaurant in Gratz Park Inn. We had Family in for the holidays, and brought a party of 6 to the restaurant. We all started with cocktails which were all great, we then all ordered something different Steak, Fish, Fried Chicken, the Pasta and a Vegetarian Mushroom dish. Everyone was very pleased, we are already talking of returning to the restaurant when my family is back in July. Food is very above par for Lexington and presented beautifully. Cant wait to return.

Honestly, I had one of the best meals of my life here. The crab cake was lovely. The compressed berry and melon salad was one of my favorite things I've ever eaten, with the lovely layer of goat cheese and fruits and the perfect touch of crunch from the citrus croutons. for the entree, I had the bacon wrapped duck. I had no idea duck and raspberry and bacon and vanilla would go so well together, but now I do and I am so grateful. I left very very happy.

Solid food, great patio but drinks need some help. Things that keep it form earning five stars: - If I've booked a RSVP via Open Table or calling in...don't make me wait any additional 15-20 minutes. - The host stand almost always seems to be unoccupied. - The bartenders have a hard time with any complicated cocktails.

We went there as a small group (6) after Thursday Night Live. We had made reservations for the patio. It was a beautiful evening for sitting out. Our server was kind enough but didn't seem overly confident in knowing his menu for the evening and a bit soft spoken:/, but nice enough. We ordered two cheese plates. Good thing, because for $15 a plate they only had 3 pieces of cheese and like 3 crackers! Rip off. As couples we all chose the halibut to split, which was fantastic. I had ordered a wedge which he completely forgot to bring so when the fish arrived I asked and then he brought it out. There was bread for the table, but literally the biscuits were the size a quarter, you know a coin! I've never seen bread so small! When we got the bill there was a split plate fee, which I understand, however our waiter never told us or how much it was going to be for. This really upset one of our table mates. The chef/owners father, Henry came to the table a couple of times to see how we were enjoying supper and was very cordial. But I was charged for the wedge even though he said he was going to take it off our bill since he forgot it. I mean we ate it, but don't say something you aren't going to do! It was a one and done visit. None of us had been so we tried it. Now we know.

The decor is impeccable. The noise level was over 100 decibels consistently. This damages hearing over the long-term. Very poor service. Poor front of house service. Heirloom in midway, their other restaurant, is a success. This is a failure in its current state. We are huge Heirloom fans. We will not return to Distilled in its current state. Ever.

In order to lend a full explanation to my review- I have to rewind back to when this place was Jonathan's at Gratz Park. My boyfriend and I are 20-somethings who live downtown (I work nearby at UK) and wanted to give the place a try. We walked by there and asked to sit on the patio. As we were escorted to our table I saw that the host "double-sat" the waiter in our section, which as a former waitress, I completely understand can be frustrating. My bf and I were more than willing to give him a few extra minutes to get the first table squared away before he came over to us, but (no exaggeration) 25 minutes later we were still sitting there. We tried multiple times to flag down any waiter who walked by, but no one would make eye contact with us. We were puzzled and frustrated and finally just got up and left. I called later and asked to speak with the manager on-call who said that yes, she remembered us and she was sorry (apparently there had been a feud of sorts between the waiters and there was a stand-off about who was going to have to take the table...). I also got the impression that had we been quite older, if my boyfriend wasn't rocking a man bun (and trust me, he rocks it), and had I perhaps been wearing a Kate Spade dress and carrying a Coach bag...we would not have had an issue... Fast Forward to "Distilled." As you might imagine, I was thrilled when the new chef came on board and promised a less stuffy approach to the restaurant. Everything I read said that Distilled was going for a more fresh, hip and trendy vibe (I figured more like a couple of our all time favorites: Table 310 and Proof on Main in Louisville). We called ahead for reservations and were seated on time, with no issues. Just to preface, my boyfriend and I were both wearing nice shorts, but immediately felt wayyyy underdressed. Our waitress came over to bring us our menus and we didn't see her again for about ~15 minutes. We both looked at each other and kind of laughed at our unfortunate deja vu. The entire meal continued like that. We were carefully listening to how the waitress addressed the other customers and it was world's away from how she was addressing us. We were never read specials, offered drink menus, or asked how things were. In fact, it was so obvious that another waiter came over and crouched down next to our table to quietly ask if we were being waited on because he said "every time I look up you poor folks don't have waters, or anything." If only HE had been helping us out! My experience with the food was good so if you're only in it for that- you're in good shape. Scallops were divine and the melon salad was perfection. I have to say though, that for a place that's trying to reinvent their image- it has to be more than just a fresh coat of paint and a new chef. If you want to appeal to the 20-something crowd that is packing into places like National Provisions you can't treat us like we're not valuable business. I spent $71 on a meal to feel embarrassed and quite frustrated. Even though I don't make 6 figures or wear pearls I can tell you.. "ain't nobody got time for that."

Distilled was amazing! Wonderful atmosphere, impressive drink menu--especially for bourbon lovers, spectacular service (Nicole was so knowledgeable) and the food took my breath away. When you decide you need a special treat, this is the place to go!

Wonderful service and terrific food. Their menu has tons of variety, and the flavors all worked very nicely together. We had the scallops as a starter, and my husband had the filet for dinner. They were amazing (as of course I tried them.) I had the special Red Snapper and it was perfect. Mild, everything melded together beautifully. We skipped dessert, but will definitely return to try it some other time. The atmosphere is nice, but it is loud, so be prepared to speak up. I'll take a bit noisy over dead silence though. You know everyone's having a good time ;)

Absolutely fantastic. The filet with bone marrow is wonderful, presentation is phenomenal. I have already been 3 times and it keeps getting better every time. I actually prefer this place to heirloom.

I'm glad we didn't walk out after our first impression. Me and my wife made a 6:15 reservation. We wanted to give this place a try, since it replaced (one of my favorite restaurants) Jonathan's. When we arrived, we were greeted very rudely by the host (who never looked up from his Ipad). He didn't offer to take my wife's coat and when she asked if she could hang up her coat, he sighed and took it from her. We were then seated at a small table with hard chairs that were different than any other chair or table in the Restaurant. I asked the waiter and the host if we could move and they told me no, that those tables were for people who made late reservations. I want to clarify and state that at that time, only 3 tables were being used. I wanted to get up and walk out then, but my wife wanted to stay. Again, we made a reservation. Food: We ordered the Country Ham to start and it was great. I love when restaurants use local vendors and this did not disappoint. Our main entrée that came with a $35.00 price tag was the ribeye with stuffed bone marrow and potatoes. Me and my wife love ribeye and have come to be quite the snobs when eating them in restaurants. I will still maintain that Jeff Ruby's has the best steak and it's great that Lexington is getting one of his restaurants. However, it seemed that the chef didn't care to put any effort to add flavor to the meat. My wife made comment that Texas Roadhouse had better steaks than Distilled. I thought that was a bold statement, but I almost agreed. I wish we would have ordered something else, because there were a lot of creative combinations with food on the menu. I really hope this place makes it in Lexington. The Waiter was great and it was great meeting the chef's dad, who came around to each table and greeted the patrons. Distilled needs to work on customer service at the Host/Hostess stand. The man that they hired has zero personality and was really rude. People who will spend $100.00+ dollars to eat at this place deserve more than to be treated they way me and my wife were this past Saturday night.

The gnocchi and filet (two different entrees) were great. I was a little jealous I didn't get the filet. It was cooked to perfection and I had a similarly cooked steak (seared to a crisp on the outside- delicious) in Pittsburgh and it was twice as much. Our waiter (John B.) was sweet and helpful. The only reason for 4 and not 5 stars was the drinks- just okay and some our party had gnats in their drinks- hey, it happens, but $10 for a mediocre, gnatty cocktail loses you a star. I'd go back for sure.

Great appetizers & main courses-- very mediocre desserts. We had crab cake, Caesar salad, and the burger. Panna cotta and strawberry shortcake were our desserts.

Had a few hiccups, but overall an excellent meal and a restaurant I'd certainly recommend. I was never a huge fan of Jonathan's at this location because I thought it was "all hat, no cattle" as the expression goes--all the trappings of a high end restaurant but lacking chops in the kitchen to deliver exciting food. But I've heard so many good things about Heirloom that I was excited when some friends wanted to eat at its sister restaurant in Lexington. In short, we were there over 3 hours and, with drinks, paid quite a bit for the meal, but I felt the evening was well worth the money. I did not think the meal was flawless, however, and would place the experience behind what I've come to expect at Cole's for instance. But here's the rundown: Service and Environment: Service was outstanding throughout. Our server (I think the name was Dylan) appeared to be 18 years old (maybe this says more about my age than his), but was knowledgeable, attentive, friendly, and helpful throughout the evening. I'd heard the restaurant is loud and it proved to be so. I was with a big group and so I didn't mind, but if you are looking for a quiet meal, you may want to come on weekdays, because that Saturday was fairly boisterous. Drinks: My wife and I both enjoyed our cocktails. I've never been a huge fan of rye, but the Barrel Aged Manhattan employed it deftly. Showcased the whiskey but added just a hint of sweetness. The wine list was not incredibly extensive, but certainly had enough to cover most tastes. Drinks were very reasonably priced. I thought the cocktails were actually sort of a bargain at $10-12 given their quality. Food: Didn't get an appetizer, but had the Mache and Brie salad, which was not that exciting, but fine. The brie came sandwiched between what looked like two slices of a baguette and felt very disconnected from the salad. My wife got this salad with Kale, frisee, and quinoa, which was bright, textured, and delicious. My entree was a sea bass special. The skin was not crisp--actually completely soggy--which was disappointing, but the fish was otherwise cooked expertly. The lentils that came with the fish were remarkably good. I would have eaten a plate of them with nothing else and been happy. Others at our table had the filet, the John Dory, and the Marksbury Fried chicken, and everyone returned clean plates to Dylan, raving about the quality of the food. My wife got the chicken, which was tender, with a flavorful breading and a light serving of savory gravy. For dessert, I got the pear and blackberry cobbler, which was good, but which would have benefited from a shift in the proportions (more blackberry, less pear) and a bit longer cooking time on the pear or smaller slices--they were a little less done than I'd want in a cobbler. But again, I think this is a legitimate fine dining restaurant in Lexington that far outshines the previous tenant. Even with a few mistakes, the menu is full of good choices and the kitchen clearly has talented people working back there. Will definitely go again.

After a long break from Lexington we came back to disappointment. Such a limited menu and I thought arriving at 7:00 we could expect specials but we found out they sold out? Ok we both had a pasta dish on the menu it was so so. The desert menu was also a disappointment. As for the staff, the manager was friendly but the waiter & bartender both did the disappearing act that we experienced at Johnathon's all the time. Wont be back on our next trip up

Simply amazing. Mark Wombles is pure genius. Has intuitive sense on how to combine different textures, colours, and flavours to create unforgettable tasting experiences. Just as impressive as his restaurant in Midway, but with a different personality. This is a place you must experience for yourself. Went with a large group of 15. The server was well educated on the menu, service was excellent. Between the group, we ordered everything on the menu and everyone highly enjoyed what they had ordered. Renovations to the space when compared to the old Jonathan's space were definitely an upgrade. Much brighter cheerier and more contemporary. Wine and spirits list was extensive.

The Good: the food, the service, the drink menu, the ambiance. The Bad: the location, the music. The Rundown: this place is amazing! Literally the best steak I have ever had! Their food was delicious tasting, amazingly flavorful, wonderful, well thought out, beautifully prepared, just all around astoundingly great! You have to go I to the Gratz hotel to get to this place, which is a beautiful hotel by the way. The decor is a classy modern / minimalist type of vibe. The lighting sets the mood perfectly, and whether you want great beer, wine, or cocktails, this place has what you are looking for. The Impression: a wonderful experience, one that I plan on having many times. The only negatives I have about this place is that on West 2nd Street there really isn't much in walking distance to do. Also, the music selections need some work, it is XM radio, which you hear the station announce over the speakers, which played old school disney / ballet music or some weird jazz. This is not indicative of the romantic feel it should have. These are small complaints in comparison to the overwhelming amount of amazing things you should visit here for.

The décor is light and airy with large windows providing plenty of natural light into the restaurant. One wall has tasteful wallpaper on it and the rest of the restaurant is painted a lovely light blue. I visited Distilled for lunch with five of my coworkers. It wasn't busy and we received excellent service. Our waiter was very friendly and seemed happy to be working there and eager to describe all of the choices on the menu. I ordered the Cuban sandwich with pulled pork and country ham. It came with a side of crispy shoestring French fries. The sandwich had crusty bread and it was delicious. It had a lot of flavor with the combination of the salty ham, pulled pork, pickles, cheese, and a light sauce. All of my coworkers enjoyed their meals as well.

Positives: Fried chicken and biscuits were amazing! The gravy is awesome but I wish there was more. I had heard that there cocktails were good but I didn't realize how good. I had the Italian Sands, a house specialty which was delicious, and I'm not much for cocktails. Service was outstanding, attentive but not annoying. Dessert was a chocolate molten cake with house made bourbon pecan ice cream, I loved it but my husband wasn't a fan. Negatives: My husband ordered the filet which was really delicious but the medium was more like a rare so I would ask for it to be more done than you would normally get it to ensure it comes out cooked correctly. The music was a little weird, they changed channels halfway through dinner and it had advertising mixed in, which for such a nice atmosphere was awkward. Also even though it may seem common sense that the waiter box something up, make sure you specify that you want it boxed up and not thrown away as we had one of our meals accidentally thrown away. The Vibe: This is definitely going to be our new romantic date night restaurant. The complexity and richness of the food are major pluses in my opinion and the beer and cocktails selection is very interesting. Simply put - it is a modern restaurant with a Kentucky spin.

We recently tried Distilled and returned to Heirloom on consecutive nights. Distilled upholds the standards we were used to at Heirloom - imaginative dishes of farm-to-table ingredients with exceptional service. Jonathan was my favorite restaurant in Lexington, so I challenged the space to produce the outstanding dining experience we'd loved, and Distilled delivered. I loved the grits with mushrooms (seriously, mushroom brittle? yum!) and my husband loved the fried chicken entrée. The soup was divine and bread a treat in itself. I agree with another reviewer here - Mark is a genius with flavor combination. Although I'd read criticism of the décor redo, we think the space is beautiful and the lighting very nice. If I had one critique? The jeans worn by the servers aren't on par with the space or the culinary experience. Upgrade everyone to black slacks and Distilled is pure class.
