Wow! What a great Tex Mex! We came in with a large group of 21 people unannounced and the restaurant quickly pulled some tables together for us. They were very accommodating. The only downside that I had was it was very difficult to keep up with who had what which is of course reasonable with such a large group. I ordered the beef Chimichanga. It came with two large chimichangas. Chimichangas basically has a flour tortilla that is grilled on flat grill and had beef inside. It was kind of like a roast beef. Very soft and tender. It was super good and awesome! The meal also came with beans, rice, guacamole, sour cream, and a little lettuce. The Chimichangas had this yummy white cheese on it. For my drink, I also had a non alcoholic strawberry margarita, but it was more like a strawberry daiquiri. It was still great! I have to say the best thing about this restaurant is the service and the large portions of food for the money.

Very good food and great service. They have so many great dishes to choose from! The dining room is great, with several televisions. The atmosphere is very casual but also very nice. They also offer carry out, which we have used a few times. They do a good job of packaging the food so it stays hot until you get it home. All in all it is a very good choice for dining, and the best when you really want Tex-Mex.

I enjoyed my experience at El Azul Grande immensely. The staff was extremely friendly and they went out of their way to accommodate us. The atmosphere of the place is very cozy. We got our food promptly and the quality of the food they served was very good. I would recommend this restaurant.

We had a wonderful meal here. I ordered Steak Fajita and it was so good. We came in group of 5 so we got 2 free desserts, and the desserts tasted very nice. The music sometimes got a little too loud but generally I like this restaurant.

While it's not the fanciest Mexican restaurant I've been to, the food at El Azul stacks up against the best I've had. Definitely try the Pork Tips Colorado or Pork Tips Chile Verde. The pork was so tender and juicy and just breaks apart in your mouth. And at less than $7.50, the best deal in town. Their wings are great as well. Dessert was disappointing. The fried ice-cream was tough, stale corn flakes coated ice-cream. The servers are very friendly, attentive and fast. The only thing that keeps me from giving this place 5 stars is that they still allow smoking in the restaurant.

Excited about checking out the Mexican place beside my hotel on my latest biz trip, I strolled across the parking lot and grabbed a table for one (which I do so often it has become markedly less depressing than you may think). The tl;dr rundown: acceptable but slightly below average Tex-Mex flavors; friendly, attentive staff; good prices. For the bored, here's the deets: Let's start with the good. Prices are extremely affordable; I defy you to upsize a combo at your local McWenBurgerDee's and not come close to or exceed the per-meal cost of El Azul's generously portioned plates. Additionally, the staff - from the moment I walked in to paying the check - was exceptional: friendly, attentive, helpful. Unfortunately, that's where the praise ends and the frumpy average review starts. The food was, to my disappointment, decidedly bland - not in a "needs salt" kind of way, just very one-note and boring. The salsa (free, with chips) was effectively chunky ketchup. The mole on my "Special de Ricardo" was clearly from a can. The chicken, while appropriately textured and well cooked, was devoid of the Tex-Mex flavors I love so much. The cheese dip could have been a bright spot, but it came without the Jalepenos that I specifically requested, leaving nothing to balance its dairy richness. There was not the tiniest sniff of spice or heat in any aspect of my entire meal, but more than that (as I know some just don't like spicy food), it lacked the complexity of flavors that is the strong suit of Tex-Mex cooking. To be clear, there was nothing bad or unappetizing, just very boring food. Last thing, which cannot be quantified or even easily described in a review, but I think is important: as I was paying, a woman was picking up a to-go order, talking to the lady at the front desk about her day, the new lunch buffet, and other topics, and I realized that this is a locals' place, part of and active in the community. Now, it doesn't change my personal experience or opinion, but given the discourse of the folks in the restaurant and the overwhelmingly positive reviews, I think it's safe to say that this place is well-liked around these parts, people support it. So great, El Azul Grande, do what you do. If I ever roll back through though, how about sliding some Jalepenos and maybe a bit of cumin my way?

The only one in town with best services especially with the best discounts and gifts for all schools in the town. Tanks to all its customers and its surroundings...

Went to this restaurant for my birthday with a group of friends and the food was amazing. I loved the chicken nachos and the queso cheese dip as well. The chips and salsa served as our appetizers were very fresh. The service was absolutely amazing, and they even gave my friend and I free desserts.

We went into El Azul Grande and were immediately greeted by our very friendly server who ushered us to our booth. We were given the usual chips and salsa while waiting for our food. I wish the salsa was spicier but other than that it was very satisfying. I ordered the chimichanga's with beans and rice and was pleasantly surprised to only wait about five minutes for our food to come. Everything on my plate was simply amazing and the server was so kind and patient with us. It was an incredible experience and I highly recommend it!

The El Azul Grande was referred to this restaurant by a few friends and soon our group of 20 individuals went there for dinner. The physical aspect of the restaurant was very good. I loved the way it was set up and the atmosphere was very inviting. Now when it came to the service I could say I had better. The waiter did not understand what I wanted and when my food arrived it was incorrect. Also the food wasn't the best I have had. The rice was cold and they barely give you enough topping on your dish to satisfy your pallet. The salsa was mild and it lacked the Mexican spices I am accustom to do to my experiences in previous restaurants. I would say check it out and see what you think, but it just wasn't for me.

El Azul Grande is the perfect place to have a good time with either your family or your friends. Me and my group of 20 people stopped by last week for dinner and most of us had a good time. They set up some tables so we could all seat together which was really nice. Before talking about the food I must talk about the customer service which was just great! The waiters came by literally like every five minutes looking to see if we needed. They were very hard workers and they were just great. I had one of their specials which was really good but nothing amazing. There's also a full bar for those that want to drink. It is close from downtown Hazard KY so if you're around be sure to check their restaurant. PS You will get full, just like any other Mexican restaurant you will have your plate full of good food and will end up asking for a box.

Wonderful dinner for a party of 21. Virgin daiquiris, chicken and beef fajitas, pollo grandees, shrimp steak fajitas, seafood salads, vaca and pollo bandidas, and chimichanga were experienced by the hungry band of travelers. Service was excellent and the managers chased our group of SOLOMO experts to learn how Yelp and TripAdvisor can promote others to review and comment on the cuisine. As a entire group the reviews would have been a 4.5 but Yelp only permits whole numbers.

Wow, I love this place. I was here with friends, they have a big tv screen for your view while you wait for your food. Great Mexican good at low price

El Azul Grande is conveniently located right in town, is clean, and has an adorable Mexican design. However, I ordered a seafood salad and wasn't very impressed. It looked quite different in real life than it did in the picture. In the picture were pineapples and shrimp, but it didn't have any pineapples and only a couple of shrimp, while it was packed high with fake crab meat. I asked for no onions, but they put onions on it. A friend of mine had his order messed up as well. The waiters weren't rude, but I felt like either they didn't speak English very well or were not adept at listening.

My family and I discovered this restaurant in 2011. It is consistently a great place to eat. The food is great, service is good, place is always clean, and prices are reasonable.

My colleagues and I stopped here for dinner this evening and they were very accommodating considering there were 21 of us. They quickly put tables together and we were all seated almost immediately. However, they took quite a while to organize the drink orders and almost 15 minutes between taking the drink orders did they come back to get food orders. I ordered a non-alcoholic strawberry margarita, but it was more of a daquiri, but it was still very good. I also ordered the burrito supreme and the cheese sauce covering the burrito was VERY salty and almost impossible to eat without sour cream to cut down the salt. Also, I tried the flan and was very surprised with it. I have had flan several times before at other restaurants, but I have never had it served with whipped cream and sprinkles on time. It completely messed up the texture of the dessert and made it overly sweet, much to my disappointment. However, the service was reasonably quick and the area was clean. The decor and atmosphere was very nice as well.

Pretty good place to go to if you want a Mexican meal. Nice atmosphere to get a meal with family or friends. The service was very accommodating for our large group of 16 and the waiters quickly addresed any problems or mishap that your party is having. I suggest the Beef Steak & Shrimp with rice for around $13.99 if you really want a tasty and fulfilling meal

Don't know how much of it was that I was starving, but the food was delicious! Great service, fun music, and comfy booths. If I'm ever in Hazard again, I'll be back here.

I'm not one for Mexican food but this restaurant had the fastest service and friendliest waiters I have experienced yet. I had a taco salad that came with good quality chicken, beans, iceberg lettuce, cheese, and one tomato. It wasn't the best but was good for the price and of course there was unlimited chips and salsa! I would come back.

Very nice restaurant! The service can be a little slow between lunch (noon) and dinner (5 p.m.). Everything on the menu is good, though.

A few friends and I stopped in at El Azul Grande for lunch one afternoon while we were in Hazard, Kentucky. We wanted to spend our money locally and we wanted some authentic Mexican. We found the place on our smart phone and saw several 5 star reviews. It was a cool spacious building with wonderful decorations. On the other hand the service was slow and the food was mediocre at best. Honestly, it tasted like every other Mexican restaurant I have been to. I will give them an A+ for cleanliness and a C- for food quality. You could check it out at least and make the decision for yourself.

A group of friends and I stopped for lunch at El Azul Grande because reviews online all rated it as a 5 star restaurant. However, the service was slow and the food, while tasty, was just like every other Mexican restaurant. It was clean, the employees were nice, and it was a good place to spend your money locally.

I was so surprised how good the food is. I have no idea what the prices are like because someone else paid for mine (and I didn't pay that much attention), but I can't imagine it is very high. I was in a really large party, and the staff and kitchen did a pretty good job of serving/waiting on us all in a timely fashion. My negative could be that this is certainly NOT the best Mexican food I've had (Mexican is my absolute favorite). The quality of the chicken did not thrill me, and some of the chips we had tasted stale. The beans and cheese sauce were really good, the rice was good, and I had the chicken chimichangas (sp?) as my entrée. The chimichangas are supposed to be fried, and these seemed more like chicken burritos (I am used to a very crispy outer shell) than fried chimichangas.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
