I don't normally review restaurants but I definitely had to in the case of Green Bamboo. I had read the reviews here before visiting and decided to give the place a try. My wife and I recently retired from Chicago and are used to a wide variety of ethnic foods; Chinese being one of my favorites. Let me just say that every single review rating here over 1 Star was absolutely wrong. Either these reviewers have no tastebuds or have never been more than two blocks from their homes when searching out dining experiences. Having been in the restaurant business for over 35 years, I immediately recognized the shortcuts taken at Green Bamboo. The dishes were bland and ill prepared. Most came from prepackaged boxes; instant rice, conveyor belt egg rolls and frozen refried veggies. The rice was dry and flavorless. My wife's Sweet and Sour Shrimp was doughy and soggy; definitely pre-frozen and from a box. I tried the wonton soup and again was disappointed; no flavor or character. Nothing seemed to have been prepared traditionally; i.e. stir fried, etc. Everything seemed microwaved and commercially prepared. I would CHALLENGE ANYONE posting a review here to contact me and explain to me what impressed you about this place. I brought my leftovers home for our 139 lb. dog. She's accustomed to eating our doggie bags. Even she wouldn't touch this food (no kidding....she wouldn't eat it)! Sorry folks...this place was not good at all! My wife wants to give them another try! She'll be going back alone. Once was enough for me!

Of all the Chinese places in Etown, this is the best. Having said that, it's not amaaaazing or anything. It's slightly more "homemade" than the others. The Kung Pao is pretty tasty, it stands out above other dishes and the orange chicken is pretty good too. The hot and sour soup is definitely better than others. Some dishes are a little lackluster, so it can be a little risky. I find the ambiance in the place to be a little stuffy and dark, so I prefer carry out. It's also a little over priced. The nutshell- Pros: decent food with some really good food, clean, better than other Chinese joints here Cons: pricey, nothing that's a show stopper, bad ambiance

One of the best Chinese restaurants I've been to. Friendly and great service, they make you feel right at home the moment you step through the door. When I lived near Etown I ate here quite often, and man do I miss it.

The food is just ok. Pretty much what you would expect from any local Chinese place. It was overpriced for the quality, so we won't be back.

Good food! Just have to over look the cleanliness of the bathrooms and entry doors to the rest room. Hopefully the kitchen is better. They need to clean up the area where they wrap silverware.

The best Chinese restaurant in etown hands down! Always fresh and takes no time for them to get your food out to you. Always very friendly service. My favorite is the chicken and broccoli with fried rice. P.s. They now deliver for only $2 !

No flavor, this food is obviously pre frozen and the rice is instant. I don't understand how this place has so many high reviews.

Pretty standard chinese fair. Definitely one of the better choices in Elizabethtown. The ingredients are of a high quality, and I have never felt sick after eating. Their soups, egg rolls, and dumplings are particularly good, while the entrees are definitely on par with what I would expect from a take out restaurant in a larger city. Their prices are a little high with most entrees ranging from $10-$13 plus it costs an additional $1.75 for fried rice (which is good), and an additional $2,.50 if you would like to add a soup, and egg roll to your meal.

Love the mandarin chicken. Spicy and hot like I want my food and women... The steamed rice is better than the fried. Very generous entree portions. I'm 6'3" and 255 pounds so if I say it's generous....it's generous. Also love the egg drop soup with the fried noodles. Staff is very attentive but not much for small talk. But hay!..most communist never are. I do recommend this place for a nice quiet and delicious dinner for 2-4 people.

Went back and had their Moo Shu Pork. Some of the tastiest I've had.

Quite possibly the best upscale Chinese restaurant in Western Kentucky. It's better than any Chinese place in Lexington, as well. In short, it is wonderful! The dishes are excellent, made from quality ingredients, artfully prepared, and fairly priced. The lunches are a very good deal. The waitstaff is friendly and typically speedy.

My review might be a bit bias, but I think not: Maybe there is a piece of me that is still a bit nostalgic. I have had Chinese food all over the country, from L.A. to New York from Boston to Houston, and I still think some of the best I've ever had is in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. I grew up in E-Town, and as a child, we would come here on Sundays to enjoy their $11.00 buffet. (Yes. $11.00. With a drink. Which, anywhere else might buy you an appetizer.Oh, and you want a different soup, just ask. No charge.) I remember it being wonderful then, almost 25 years ago. They have a vast selection of everything, including desserts. Of course, as a kid, your tastes change, and perhaps, I remembered things different, so after having been away, I returned to the Green Bamboo about 10 years ago, when I was in town for a friends wedding and found the food and the atmosphere the very same. Ordered the Pepper Steak, which I will only order here, and relived 1988 all over again. Today, after 10 years, I was passing through and thrilled to see that while the movie theatre is long gone, and the town has changed, there stood the little restaurant that could. The food smelled heavely the minute you hit the door. We dined on eggdrop and hot and sour soups, pepper steak (total score!), noodles, eggrolls, wontons, even desserts. If you are looking for some good food in a small town and want a bit of something different from southern cooking, drop on in and get your Buddha belly on.

Saying this place is authentic or "the best ever" is, well, just stupid. It's an eat-in Chinese restaurant in rural Kentucky. What can you possibly expect? If they were serving un-deveined shrimpies and whole head-on fish, thousand year old eggs, stinky tofu, specialties of specific regions of China, etc., (rather than deeply, profoundly, as Chef-Boyardee-is-to-Legit-Italian, Americanized fare) they woulda gone out of business about twenty minutes after they opened, years ago. I spent a significant amount of time in Asia, eating commercially for three meals a day (and the **cough** occasional *cough* visit to a night market for dumplings or snacks, late night). I'm pretty familiar with non-Americanized Chinese food. This ain't that. Not even close. Not by far. Not even the noodles are "right." And cornstarch is a far too frequent ingredient in sauces. That firmly established, the ingredients tend toward more fresh than the takeaway-only spots in town. It's just that the food seems, well, boring and fair-to-middling: there's nothing creative or remotely worthwhile. It's like they're still serving General Tso's (insert protein) like it's a novelty with no passion, no joy. Which is pretty much a bummer. I guess I'm trying to say it seems like this place is a slightly "upscale" (again, for Etown - price-wise) Chinese diner, though I think they're capable of much more. It's very dark inside and pretty dated. Get over it, or don't. It's been that way for twenty-plus years...I'm guessing it's not gonna change. Their soups are nice, never greasy, as are many of the entrees. And I love the soup mix-ins: I'm a sucker for crunch in a lovely, light broth. Eating in the restaurant is a positive experience - as much as they're certainly efficiency-minded and turn over tables more quickly than necessary (i.e., your next course is always up before you're ready for it, your bill is presented at the same time as your last ordered course, and the busing staff start lurking about a moment after you get your entrees) even when the restaurant is 75% empty. So, anyway - it's fine. I wouldn't go out of my way, by any means, but...meh. It's better than most (but not all) of the alternatives within 30 miles.

My husband and I came here while on a road trip to Nashville. My mom begged us to try it, as it was a favorite of my family when we lived in Fort Knox. It was better than I remember. Seriously the best Chinese food - it's light and flavorful, and I ate way more than I should have. Get the fried rice and any of the soups. You won't regret it.

My wife, granddaughter and I were traveling back home, got hungry and decided to look at Yelp for a restaurant in the Elizabethtown area. Based on the reviews we went for Chinese and this one. Service was fast and courteous with quick refills on our drinks. When asked what we wanted for our meals, our granddaughter chose sweet and sour chicken. My wife and I both chose Family style bean curd with vegetables as that is one of our favorites in other Chinese restaurants. We asked for the egg rolls that come with the dinner to be replaced with veggie egg rolls. "Yes, we can do that - for an extra 35 cents per egg roll." Ooookay. "Can I substitute fried rice for the steamed white rice ?" "Yes - 75 cents extra." Oookay. To go healthy around here costs more. We received our dishes - egg drop soup first - delicious! Followed next were the egg rolls - piping hot and very delicious also. Warning- very hot! Allow time to cool before biting into them! Finally, our main dishes. On the plus side was plenty of bean curd/tofu. But.... it was lacking in the vegetables. There WERE some in there but not like most other places. Some mushrooms and a smattering of snow peas. Definitely could have used broccoli, carrots and sliced celery like most others. Total tab for three dinners including drinks - $42. A little pricey. Overall - Would I return? Probably not. Was it good? Yes - a bit skimpy on the vegetables and the extra charges turned me off.

I've trusted Green Bamboo to provide yummy meals for years. When I first moved to Etown, I lived close to the restaurant, and I stopped in many times for my favorite...hot & sour soup! It's delicious! We love every single meal.

I've been to Green Bamboo a couple times. It has always been great, though the waiters and waitresses seem preoccupied even when there are not a lot of people in the restaurant. After I got food poisoning from Chinese, I would normally be leery before going for more Asian style cuisine, though I'll always go to Green Bamboo.

Ordered to go. Wonton soup had no flavor, and the Chinese wasn't cooked all the way. Never again.

I only order the Mandarin Chicken ( Gen. Tso's in other restaurants) and its very tasty and just order one meal as it easily feeds two. Always to go, because the restaurant hasn't seen an upgrade since 1983. This restaurant does not claim to be high class so treat it as such. Get a nice to go meal and enjoy. Easily the only choice for Chinese in Elizabethtown.

If you live in the area, this is the Chinese restaurant to go to. I only ordered their take out maybe once a quarter. Is this the best Chinese food ever? No. But, the other Chinese restaurants can not compare. This place is mediocre and its the best they have. So if your in the area and crave Chinese, do go there. I never ate inside there. Bamboo square plantings out front with cheap astroturf walkway, the inside is dark and the best part about it is the gold fish. The astroturf alone should tell you the place is not upscale. The family that owns the restaurant seems very nice. They bag up my order very well, never had a spillage problem. The portion sizes could be a bit larger and the wonton soup is bland, very bland.

Even by American standards, this isn't good Chinese food. Eating here is like stepping into a timewarp all the way back to the 1980s, when all you needed to make something "Chinese" was lots of corn starch. Let me explain: if to you, Chinese food means soups so thick and gooey that your spoon will stick straight up in them, or dishes with tons of salt and gloopy sauces, then by all means, Green Bamboo will rock your world. The menu claims they don't use any MSG in their food, so that's a point in their favor, but if this is the best Chinese food that Kentucky has to offer, then it's safe to say that Kentucky doesn't have any good Chinese food. Stopped in for lunch, and it was not a buffet day (thank god!), so we ordered a la carte instead. The lunch specials are actually very reasonable: for 6.75, you get to pick one of something like 12 main dishes, and you also get a bowl of soup, fried rice, an egg roll, and a fried chicken wing. That's a ton of food for not much money, but unfortunately quantity doesn't equal quality! Probably the nicest thing on the plate was the chicken wing, so it was a shame it was only the length of my pinky finger! I ordered the Mandarin shrimp, which was in some kind of mystery brown sauce that was just this side of gelatinous, and was not the least bit spicy (despite the menu's claims). My husband ordered the ginger pork, another so-called spicy dish, that was ultimately just very salty (chef was maybe heavy-handed on the soy sauce). The fried rice and eggroll are clearly just filler, all making for a meal that is essentially forgettable. I will say that the decor is kind of cool in a retro kind of way, though this restaurant is SO dark it's kind of like stepping into a cave! Also, our waitress was extremely expedient, making for a quick lunch indeed. I also liked that in lieu of chips and salsa that you'd get at a Mexican restaurant, this place offers up a bowl of crispy wonton bites that you can dip in plum sauce while you wait. Nothing special, but it was tasty and something I hadn't seen before. Bottom line: if you value cheap food over good food, like dated cooking, and haven't ever eaten Chinese food in a real city, Green Bamboo may do the trick. It's one of those restaurants where everything works EXCEPT the food. Such a shame.

New to town and trying to find all our new favorites in this town. This is the first sit down "nice" Chinese restaurant we've seen in awhile. We went on a Friday night and they didn't have a buffet set up so I'm not sure when or if they do that. We ordered the family dinner that comes with soup, egg roll & chicken wings and an entree. I had the wonton soup and it was very good. So many times I've had it and it's been oily or salty and this was a great balance and not oily at all. I wasn't a fan of the egg roll. They did look like they were made in house but I'm not 100% sure on that. The chicken wings were unique but very garlicky. My husband really liked them. I had the monogolian beef. It's a favorite of mine and it's always hit or miss at places like this. They did an awesome job and it was a very generous entree. We had fried rice with it and I was pleased to see that it wasn't loaded with peas & carrots like so many other places. My husband had the general tsos chicken. It wasn't breaded and fried like in most places but was flavorful and yummy. It wasn't as spicy as what I expected though. Overall, it was a good experience. The dining room is very unique and well maintained. I will definitely go back!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
