Very impressed with The Hungry Heart. I'm a sucker for a great gastropub and it did not disappoint. We were greeting by a very friendly employee and the decor and vibe of the restaurant was awesome. I started with a Not Your Father's Root Beer, a sweet beer that's very hard to find in Wichita right now. We started with the Three Little Pigs pulled pork egg rolls. The egg rolls were juicy and flavorful and the dipping sauce was so delicious that I was tempted to drink it out of the container! For my main course I ordered the Smoked Tri-Tip. The meat was so juicy and very smoky but not overwhelming. It was one of the most flavorful cuts of meat that I've had in a long time. I was disappointed that they were out of the parsnip mash but the Asian green beans and French fries were delicious. The service was wonderful, food was great. Definitely recommend The Hungry Heart!

I have been hearing a lot about The Hungry Heart lately, I've known it's been there for awhile but it's definitely a little off the beaten path. It's literally in the backyard of Intrust Bank Arena. I imagine it's really busy during arena events and then a backstreet gem any other day. So one night when my gal got off work we decided to make a trip down there. We really had no idea what to expect, but were pleasantly surprised upon pulling up front. There is a large smoker omitting all sorts of delicious smells. The inside has exposed brick walls and super high ceilings, they even have a loft for extra seating. The bar itself was really cool, made with wood planks and corrugated metal. It is backed with high shelves covered with bottles that make you wonder how they could ever reach them all. We started off with a couple of cocktails. As a whiskey fan I had The Ring of Fire. It was sweet, with some fruit in the bottom, and overall satisfying. The Three Little Pigs appetizer jumped out to me. It's basically a BBQ egg roll. Most of what they offer is kind of a Californian Asian BBQ style. The smoked pulled pork egg roll with cabbage and carrots and BBQ dipping sauce was absolutely amazing. I ended up settling on the Pulled Pork Sandwich. The menu is fairly small so it wouldn't take too many trips to try everything. One advantage of a small menu is they can focus more on the quality of each item and it shows. The 20 hour smoked pork shoulder is topped with tangy coleslaw and house made BBQ sauce and served on a pretzel bun. You can definitely taste the amount of time and effort put into the sandwich. Overall I came out pretty satisfied with The Hungry Heart. I wasn't expecting to spend $60 for two drinks, an appetizer and two meals but I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised since BBQ spots have to be compensated for the amount of time they invest into their meats. I look forward to returning.

I was a bit hesitant to try this place as we usually try to avoid old town, but I am so glad we did! We went on a Friday evening for a date night of sorts. We were promptly seated and our server Amanda let us know about their specials and got our drink order. She was especially knowledgeable in helping my husband find the perfect beer for his tastes. I already knew I wanted the short ribs but my husband was undecided as he's not the biggest fan of Asian style foods. Amanda went through the menu and recommended a couple of her favorites for him. He ended up choosing the pulled pork sandwich. We also got an order of wings to split. Our food was delivered fast. And was SO DELICIOUS! My spare ribs were so tender and tasty. I absolutely loved the spicy pickles! They had such a nice zing and spice without being too spicy. My husband's pulled pork sandwich was amazing as well. On the menu, it said it was a pretzel bun so we expected it to be like other pretzel buns out there but it was not. It looked like an actual sliced soft pretzel and was such a nice touch to such a tasty sandwich. The wings were very tasty as well and required no sauce. We were so stuffed between our two meals we ended up taking home most of our order of chicken wings. Our server kept our drinks full and made sure we were taken care of the whole time. We were both very impressed with this place! We will definitely be back!

We were in Wichita for a graduation and while in the downtown area decided to give this restaurant a try. Great food, great beer and a friendly staff made the meal an absolute delight despite the rainy afternoon. Look forward to returning the next time we're in town.

Compared to the cavernous expanses of space in the neighboring restaurant next door, the relatively cozy Hungry Heart is more assertive, more divisive, and more creative. It has a distinctive personality that is represented well by their busy graffiti-style logo. As the Yoder grill outside of the entrance suggests, the food here is primarily barbecue, but it's more refined. It's the kind of barbecue that could realistically be served as part of a well-rounded meal, instead of the heaping helping of meat and carbs that normally serves as the start of a bloated and overstuffed afternoon. Things like Tri-Tip, a California cut not commonly found in this part of the barbecue belt, treated simply and served with a surprisingly well-paired parsnip mash and green beans. The spicy pickle salad served with the similarly-great Korean short ribs complemented each other well. What put me over the top was the various homemade beer ice creams. It's easy enough to do a chocolate stout ice cream - though here it was taken to Mexico with the addition of some chile powder for heat - but other pairings that you might not expect. The Warbeard strawberry ice cream offered enough beer flavor to make its presence known, but still gave way to the sweetness of the strawberries. I'd be interested to see what else they can do with this. The beer selection is curated by a beer geek, which is to say that it's heavily skewed towards hoppy, high-alcohol, and American beers - half of the taps serve beers higher than 8% ABV. Stone Old Guardian AND Old Guardian Hoppy are available, as are two other Stone beers. It's lopsided. Hopefully, once the brewery finally starts producing some product (and justifying the unruly mouthful of "The Hungry Heart and W.H.O.L.E. Brewing Company"), it might round out the beer offerings and serve as an additional means of drawing in some new business in an area that's easy to forget about when there's not an event at Intrust Arena.

What an amazing find!! I have to thank Restaurant.com for leading me here. My husband and I are driving cross country, so we've been finding places to see, sleep and eat at online. The smell coming from the smoker just outside completely sealed the deal for us! Then we went inside and were even more pleasantly surprised- the place has a great atmosphere and is very clean inside (important to yelpers based on reviews I've read of other restaurants). Now for our meal- first, we shared the ahi nachos, then for our meals, I had the pulled pork sandwich with mustard slaw, house-made pickles and fries, and my husband had the tri-tip with green beans and parsnip mash and we shared the beer ice cream for dessert- and WOW!! ALL of it was amazingly delicious!! We sat at the bar, so we got to talk to the bartender, a couple employees and the owner- ALL of whom were super personable, funny, easy to talk to people that, if we lived closer, I'd love to be friends with! Then, the owner brought us a sample of the salmon he had recently smoked- which was DELICIOUS! We left feeling happy and STUFFED, but still wishing we had had more room for more of the menu items in our stomachs!! All in all, I wish we lived closer- we would definitely be regulars!!

What a great place with both local & unique flair. The inside is small with exposed brick walls & an attractive bar. We went for lunch & had timely service. I had the Tri-tip & it had layers of flavor, was juicy & and had a drizzle of delicious sauce. The Asian green beans were salty, crisp & a perfect pairing. The parsnip purée was different and worth trying although next time I will try the fries. There are several menu items I can't wait to go back for. This restaurant could easily be on Mass Street in Lawrence as it has a real laid back & local feel.

In town on a business trip, stopped in with a group of six. Walking into the place I was a little skeptical, but to my surprise, the decor was hip and the staff was very friendly. We started with some chicken wings as appetizers, the Buffalo and Asian style were both really good with great presentation. Out of six of us, all were very happy with their meals. Service was awesome. From our server to the bartender, all took a part in our experience and making their recommendations. I personally made a request to thank the cook, which is very rare, and the cook made the time to come out to introduce herself. If I lived local, it would be a place I would frequent.

Amazing! I was looking for something different for lunch/dinner. After reading other reviews, I opted to start with the Ahi Nachos. These are so good. Owner brought them out to me then came back for my reaction. I love good tuna and this did not disappoint. The garlic aioli was a great compliment. I then asked my server for a recommendation for main course...Korean Short Ribs. This is served with rice and pickled cucumbers. My first bite was the cucumber, and I would have bought jars to take home. They had a slight bit of heat that went well with the short ribs. There is nothing that I can say against my meal. Portion size is perfect, not huge, but you will not leave hungry. I will definitely return anytime I am in Wichita.

Holy sh*t this place rocks. Ribs are excellent & the spicy ice cream is an absolute must.

I cannot begin to tell you how good the food is here! You walk up and there's a smoker outside and all you smell-fish salmon and beef. Little off the beaten path commerce street behind interest Bank Arena but well worth it!

The BEST "new" spot in Wichita. Having been gone for a few years and moving back it was great to find a spot that offers such a diverse beer selection you won't find anywhere else. The service is impeccable (ask for Brandi or Zac). Food doesn't compare to anywhere else in the city.. It's a California inspired menu with a bbq twist. I recommend the ahi tuna sliders and the tri tips. Take time out of your week and come visit!

The food was great. We started with the Ahi nachos. I definitely recommend them. I had the Korean short ribs and my boyfriend had the Teres Major. Both were great but the rib were the best. The sides for both were were tasty. The portions are fair for the pricing, I didn't leave hungry! They were very busy on the Saturday night we were there and service was a little slow. However, that being said staff asked more than once if we had been helped. One of the owners John David was our waiter he was very nice. And gave us a short history on himself and the conception of the restaurant. Overall, it was a great experience. We will go back, so much more to try!

Delicious wings and good beer selection. They are going to start offering their own in house beers in the next week or two. Looking forward to coming back and trying those.

The food here is WONDERFUL! The staff is equally great minus one server. Each time my wife and I have been in she is short, dismissive, and treats patrons and her coworkers poorly, as if everyone is beneath her. I believe her name is Amanda, or Mandy. She was only memorable to me because of her poor attitude. Fortunately, the food and the rest of the staff make up for her shortcomings! I have had most everything on the menu and have never been disappointed. All ingredients are fresh and local and they are so to get the food to your table quickly! I would LOVE to give this place all the stars it deserves but sadly that server has really left a sour taste in our mouths. I still highly recommend this place cause it's a new and different vibe for Wichita, and not something you want to miss. Fun takes on all their dishes, not to mention great beer and cocktail choices to boot. I hope to see them continue to flourish as it's a fabulous establishment!!!!

This place is awesome--highly recommend it! We had the Asian wings, which far exceeded my expectations. We also tried their in-house craft beer; it was their first brew to sell in the restaurant (hopefully the first of many), and it did not disappoint. It was delightfully complex and with a higher ABV. By far the best craft brew I have found yet in Wichita! We just did appetizer + beer. The main courses looked good as they walked by, though more European-sized than typical Midwest portion size (I consider this a plus!) One of the owners, John David, came and chatted with us at our table for 5-10 minutes. The restaurant design is refreshing in its lack of resemblance to a strip mall. Come and try this place out--it is a hidden Wichita gem!

Wonderful food. Smaller portion size... I'd expect to spend $12 or $15 on an entree and another $10 on an appetizer and then I'd feel close to satisfied.

We came here for lunch, but the meals all seem fairly heavy. There was a pull-pork sandwich, but that's not my favorite thing. So, we shared some Asian wings and they were delicious! The meals sound very good, we plan to come back for dinner sometime. Also, they plan to start brewing their own beer very soon.

Delicious! From the baby back ribs with Korean green beans and yummy fries to the ice cream. Did I mention the prairie bomb ice-cream made with Prarie bomb stout and a touch of cayenne. All my party loved the food: fish tacos, Korean ribs, and chicken fingers. The vanilla juju beer ice-cream had a touch of ginger. Mmmmmmmm

Excellent new restaurant over by the arena. Park north of the restaurant. Korean ribs and tuna tacos were great. About a month out from serving their own beer. Can't wait. Nice dual floor layout with upstairs bar and loft. Fun place for Wichita.

Ordered the pulled pork sandwich, my friend got the short ribs, both were amazing. One of the owners came over and talked with us for a while, very friendly guys. I recommend this to my friends all the time, truly delicious food and amazing atmosphere.

The atmosphere was fun and our server Travis was very entertaining and informative!! We had the Ahi Tuna Nachos Party Size that fed 4 of us perfectly. We then enjoyed Fish Tacos, Tri Tip, and the pulled pork sandwich. We all four tries each others plates, and we're very impressed with all of it!! The drinks were also very delicious! We tried the Beer Margarita, the Ring of Fire, and the Velvet Underdog....all of which were so good!! Over all it was a really good experience, and we will definitely be back!!

I'm not sure if I was overly enthusiastic or overly hungry from skipping lunch ~ but I cannot say enough good things about The Hungry Heart. Great people, engaging, friendly and accommodating to an out of towner. Jesse (bartender for the night) served up a great flight of beers with good knowledge of all of them. He also offered suggestions for additional dishes to try. I'd read on Yelp to try to ahi nachos and was not disappointed. I would have maybe liked the onions a little thinner or maybe caramelized a bit, but there are still no complaints. I just moved a piece or two to the side and enjoyed. And the smoked salmon sliders weren't exactly slider style I expected but the flavor was amazing. I was curious to see where they get such awesome seafood being smack in the middle of the midwest. So, it obviously doesn't matter if it comes straight out of the sea or takes a minute to get here...it's the flavors that make it. I was so impressed with the place that I got the chance to meet the owner as well. JD is a great chef, business mind and personality! He even let me sample the 3rd dish I was considering ordering. The tri-tip (also smoked right there on site) and tender crisp green beans with soy and roasted garlic sauce. OHMYGOSH...it was all really delicious. You can tell the staff truly loves the food and what they're doing there. I will certainly go back before I leave Wichita.

Possibly the rudest staff ever! Was told the beer was on special and then charged way more for it. It doesn't help to complain to the owner, he's rude and nasty too! They were out of several menu items, at 7:00 on a week night. The tacos were small and not worth the price. I'm appalled by the way these people treat patrons. Do not waste your time or money here!!

Just had a great lunch here. Our server was Jordan , a great gal who was very thorough and knowledgeable about the food and drinks. She provided samples of their amazing craft beer infused ice creams and bourbon barbecue sauce. All the staff we encountered we helpful in hands on in food delivery and explanation of menu items. Our table shared the ahi wonton nachos, which were just killer. I had the fish tacos which were perfect for my light appetite, my fiancé ordered the Korean short ribs which were tangy and savory and came with awesome cucumber pickles . I'll be craving those for a minute I'll bet. My child ordered the fanciest tasting chicken fingers, I had plate envy! Aesthetically speaking ,the place is cool , edgy, relaxed, not the kind of place where you feel rushed for table turnover. We are already looking forward to out next visit. Till then I'll be dreaming of cucumber pickles and fancy kids meals!!

Knows the way to my heart! Wow, absolute best I've been to in a Long time. Food 9.9 out of ten (can't say anything bad about it at all but have to leave room for improvement. Parsnip mash is a nice change of pace and super tasty. We tried the JD's asian wings for the appetizer, the Smoked tri-tip entre, the back ribs and a tenderloin but I cant recall the name of it tre something, who cares they were all awesome. each entree was served with the mash and some awesome asian flare green beans. Serving size of proteins was appropriate 4 - 6 oz. You wont leave stuffed but you'll definitely be satisfied. Not a drinker but a fully stocked bar with a variety of beers was offered. Staff was super friendly, great service. Owners visited all the tables. We will definitely be back. Only negative is sparse parking, worth the effort though! Entrees ranged from 10 to 13 dollars, appetizers were 6 and 7 each. (kids menu looked like $5 per meal, didn't order from it but saw a kid get some chicken fingers and they looked really good.)

Let me start by saying - if you go, call ahead and make sure they are not out of everything! We went on a Saturday night and had been eagerly waiting to go. In looking at the menu and all of the great reviews (except for one... I will get to that) I was very excited to try this place out. I had checked out the menu before going and had it least 6 or 7 things I thought would be great to try. Unfortunately, they were out (6:30 on a Saturday night) of everything I wanted to try! There were no pork dishes (this takes out a lot on their limited menu) and no chicken wings. When the server told us this, I expressed reservations and said we might just come back another time then (although the thought screaming through my head was how can you be out of 1/2 your menu items at 6:30 on a Saturday night - some lame excuse about being very busy the Friday night before) he convinced me that they were not out of anything that wasn't pork or chicken related....so we decided to stay. We had the Korean Short Ribs and the Teres Major (beef tender loin dish). The Korean Short Ribs had good flavor but they were so tough I couldn't chew them. AND the Teres Major came with fries instead of the listed mashed parsnips which we were looking forward to trying. When we told them that we got fries instead of the mashed parsnips - you guessed it - they were out! Our server was very good and I felt a little sorry for him having to tell us they were out of everything - I think he was thinking the same thing I was! How do you run a restaurant and run out of your staple menu items so early on a Saturday night? The owner was sitting at the table next to us drinking....I should have asked him.

My wife and I recently discovered The Hungry Heart, following a recommendation by her sister. We were attending an event at the Intrust Bank Arena, and are glad we found The Hungry Heart Prior to the concert. We started off with Ahi tuna nachos. I enjoyed a Guinness on tap and my wife could not say enough good things about her Nectarine Wheat beer. When we thought we had tasted the best dish they had to offer in the nachos, my Smoked Tri-Tip arrived at the table. Fortunately for me my wife's order of Nater's fried chicken was also tasty, since I ended up surrendering my Tri-Tip after giving my wife a sample taste of it. We have another planned event to attend at the Intrust Bank Arena in April, and we will be stopping again at The Hungry Heart prior to the concert. This time we plan to both place separate orders of the Tri-Tip. This out-of-the-way Gastro pub is well worth whatever parking may cost. The price is quite reasonable, especially when you consider the atmosphere and the mouthwatering entrées. For as busy as they were that night, the bar service and waitstaff were awesome! In fact, our friends enjoyed it so much that they have booked The Hungry Heart for their wedding reception in July.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
