Mike's Wine Dive is one of my favorite restaurants in Wichita because it nails the combination of atmosphere, food, and booze. Well, I give it a pass on the food - in reality, I've always been a little annoyed at that eclectic menu. Do they really need to have hummus, caprese salad, fish tacos, a Kobe burger, lobster mac and cheese, fajitas, and a wild boar ragu on the same menu? It's a little amateurish to offer such a wide-ranging menu, but I've never really had a complaint about how they cook the food. Anyway. As a result, I was excited to hear that the folks behind Mike's would be opening a bar just a few doors down, focussing on beer this time and with food from a highly-experienced cook from Mike's kitchen. In execution, the combination of food and drink at the Hill is among the best in the city - despite claims to the title earlier this year, Wichita's first true gastropub is finally here. Unfortunately, The Hill is muddled by an atmosphere that's much too casual for its fancy digs, and the disconnect severely dampers the experience. Imagine a nice, upscale bar, complementary to Mike's sleek modernity with lots of dark wood, stone veneer, and classy accoutrements. Not formal, by any means, but not informal, either. Now litter that well-designed bar with big-screen televisions every five feet. Then hire a t-shirt clad front of the house that knows little about the beer or food, stands around chatting, and provides an overall level of service that is jarringly a couple of notches below what you might expect from the food you were eating. It's a sports bar atmosphere that's placed against a gastropub backdrop. Seriously, it's annoying: watch them congregate at the far end of the bar, wrapping silverware while wearing hoodies. Watch them gather and chat at the hostess stand. Watch them waste time with the manager in front of the A/V rack. The first time I visited while sitting at the bar I watched as the runner walked with my burger from the kitchen pickup to the beginnings of the bar and shouted "HEY!" to get the attention of the bartender at the other end to find out where to deliver this plate. The second time I visited, I ordered a salad, some wings, and a sandwich, all of which were brought out to me at the same time and which sat as I made my way through one plate at a time. All three times I've visited, the host stand doesn't seem to know whether to give me my menu so I can walk over to bar, or walk over with me and deliver it herself. I'm normally a little more forgiving about these things, but it's so frustrating here because the food is so good. A top Wichita burger is in the Pepper Bacon Cheddar Burger, which became apparent as soon as I saw they took the time to shape the slices of bacon such that they fit the rounded shape of the bun. Though the quality of the Creekstone Farms beef and toasted brioche bun helped matters, too. Ditto for the first appearance of a lamb burger that I've noticed in this town. Pulled pork sandwich didn't have much smoke, but the North Carolina vinegar sauce and coleslaw was still plenty good. Decent thin cut fries and crazy crunchy onion rings with a bit of cayenne pepper for heat. Wings are pretty respectable, too, as is the beet salad. It's all generally what you would expect to find at a decent gastropub - a lot of meaty, wholesome American dishes. They even make their own chicharones, for crissakes. Just as much care has been put into the beer menu. Approximately two dozen taps, half of them foreign and a quarter of them rotators, plus several dozen bottles all logically organized by style on the menu. There's plenty of solid selections, though you're not going to find as many rotating beers as The Anchor. But The Hill does have beer cocktails, which is another first for the city, I believe. To some extent, the problems with The Hill return to the limited pool of experienced servers from which the city seems to draw. Sure, there's plenty of people that don't mind waiting tables or manning the bar, but in terms of maintaining that balance between customer interaction, professionalism, and courtesy, qualified candidates are few and far between. However, every restaurant around here deals with this problem - more fault has to be given to whomever made the decision to cater to the blue collars of the city and dumb down the atmosphere to that of any of the city's numerous inoffensive sports bars. I'm sure it's always an easy draw, and plenty of people come to watch The Big Game, but it sullies what is otherwise one of the best restaurants in town. They took the easy way out, and I suspect it'll be to their detriment.

Everything we ordered was good! I tried onion rings and carnitas nachos for appetizers and both were great- but the appetizer portion of onion rings was awfully small to share with a group. For my entree I chose the wedge salad with beef medallions- I ordered well done and they definitely were not but the salad was still delicious. Others at my table had the chicken fried chicken and mashed potatoes which looked amazing. Prices were a little high but I would go back!

Omg the service is SO bad unless you sit at the bar. Like walk by you 5 times and not making eye contact bad. Waving your hands in the air bad. Which sucks because they food is pretty good and it's close to home.

Nice selection of beer. The patio area is kind of cool even though it's a little blocked off with a screen and you're next to a main street. There's a TV out there, too. We just ordered appetizers since we weren't that hungry. The sliders were good but I wish there was more sauce. I liked the garlic aioli the most. The calamari appetizer was very good. We never had calamari served like that before. The breading on it stayed on very well and the pieces were large-- not the usual strips or rings style. You can actually taste the crab in the crab cakes. Our friends ordered the tacos, which I didn't taste, but it looked good. We'll be back again sometime to order entrees.

This place was just O.K. -- not bad, but nothing to rave about. We were visiting from out of town when a friend took us here for dinner. The ambience was good. We were there on a weeknight - the beer specials were very good, probably the best thing about the place. We had the pretzel with the beer cheese as an appetizer. I ordered this because we do not have beer cheese in the south. It was tasty however it could have used more cheese. My friend ordered the Mac and Cheese, not bad, it was Mac with various white cheeses. I ordered a half wedge salad which was very good. I also had the Italian sandwich with the housemade potato chips, both were good. The service was prompt and friendly. I have nothing to complain about except that there is nothing original about this place. This is why the 3-star review.

We've always been a fan of this place. Good craft beer selection & food has always been excellent. We tell all our friends about it. Had one "not so great" experience, but it was immediately rectified. They showed us they really care today. Big fan of this place. The "Smoked Gouda Mac n Cheese" is awesome. My wife swears by the wedge salad & everything else we've had has been delish. Cheers!

Our favorite! Try Andreas's black bean dip, it's amazing! Dirty Martinis with blue cheese stuffed olives are divine as well!

Also called "The Heel" Bad Service Tons of Televisions Everyone had high hopes for this place, but has some of the worst service in town. I can't comment on food or even a glass of water. We spent more than 5 minutes on the patio waiting for someone to show up or acknowledge our existence after I was escorted to my table. That never happened, so I left. Nobody said a word on my way out. I counted 4 waitresses and the place was half empty. There was 2 girls opening doors and one who sat our group. 7 people working and I couldn't even get a glass of water while I looked over my menu. I will NEVER return.

We tried this place on a Saturday evening and found it moderately busy. We were seated promptly and had attentive service thru the stay. Our food was the fish sandwich and the fish and chips, neither outstanding or poor. We both felt the French fries were nothing to brag about and the quantity less than at most places. If I go back I will try the chips hoping for something better. The decor is nice and it is obvious the sports bar theme with all the screens tuned to sports. The music was too loud to be background. Considering the other places to eat close by we will not be returning here soon.

We have been to The Hill a few times and only one time was actually decent. Most recent visit in June there was four of us ordering food & drinks. The mojitos were not made right at all. The booths are super uncomfortable, they need to add cushions. The beer was good. The food was mediocre. My boyfriend ordered the chicken fried steak and it was was super thin and burnt, the potatoes were cold and hard, he didn't touch the veggies that looked mushy. I ordered the tacos and they were pretty good, could've been better for the price. The chips and queso were great, that beer cheese is awesome. When my boyfriend tried to order an orange with his beer, they were out. Before we ordered we were informed by another server of 3 items (including pork) that were not available. I can't understand how fruit is so difficult to stock and why management allowed for a main ingredient (pork), in several menu items, to run out. The men's restroom was a disaster and I won't even go there with that issue but the women's restroom wasn't great either. I walked in and there were 2 rolls of toilet paper rolling around on the floor and the toilet paper dispenser in the stall I used was hanging open. Worst thing about this is when I walked out of the restroom there were 3 employees standing around talking and not doing anything and they could've been checking on the restroom. The cleanliness of a restroom says a lot about a restaurant. After the poor experiences we've had since their opening weekend, we will not be returning. Management needs to step up their game.

I really wanted to like this place. The atmosphere is nice, loved the tall booths and any place that has a Moscow mule on the menu is usually worth a try. We started with some appetizers, the calamari and ceviche, and both were excellent. I would go back for the calamari alone--large, tender pieces, breaded and cooked perfectly. The ceviche was also excellent; so good we ordered another bowl. The first disappointment was my cocktail, I ordered a mojito and it was way too sweet. Another couple of shots of soda probably would have solved the issue; however for the price I would expect a better mixed cocktail. Problem number two was my entrée. I know that if you order a steak at a sports bar, even when it bills itself as 'upscale', you're probably going to be disappointed. Well I was. I mistakenly believed that an establishment that lists a $26 Creekstone Farms filet on its menu would have kitchen staff that know how to properly cook it. What came out was a lump of grayish brown meat with absolutely no sear, just slight cross-hatch grill marks. The steak was very underdone in the center, and ended up getting left behind on the plate. Really sad for what could have otherwise been a great cut of meat. My friend ordered the carnitas street tacos, and aside from the side of rice, she seemed to really enjoy them. I wouldn't be opposed to give this place another try, sans steak. Would definitely go back for the calamari and ceviche.

Beer was good. Alcohol Selection was great. Service was not good. Working off the bar menu, items were late. Totally was unacceptable how rude staff were to us as the closing time approached. We were yelled at, told we had to leave as we were moving to the door anyway. Waitress acted like she was inconvenienced by our presence. I would not go to The Hill again.

This bar is fairly new but has become a staple for me when I'm looking to catch a game while I eat. The decor is well done, and the amount of TVs ensures you can see the game no matter where you sit. During big events (Royals in the World Series, Wichita State games, K-State games, KU games) a big projection screen comes down for everyone to see. The food and drink prices are a bit steep but comparable to other restaurants of this caliber. The drink selection is large, and the quality of the food is superb. The two weaknesses I've seen at this place is a limited casual menu and occasionally mediocre service. The menu is a bit small and tends to bias toward meals that you'd expect to see at a finer dining establishment. If you are expecting sports bar style cuisine, you may be disappointed. At busier times, the wait staff can get behind a bit. It's by no means bad service, but you may sit with an empty glass for a few minutes. Overall, I'd definitely recommend it for a night out.

Great tacos and awesome salads. Servers are very kind and they offer great bar and beer selections. I really recommend this place for a quick meeting or after work cocktail. Their chefs give a crap about how the plate looks and that is rare for this type of venue. They also own the Wine Dive just west of this location. Steven family = a well operated business! Go Hill Yelpers!

The bar type food was what it sounds like, ok, and the service was fine. The atmosphere was like being stuck in a giant hog pen, surrounded by braying drunk Wichita bar people who have to yell at each other to make sure they are yelling at each other across the table. I think those are mating calls. Gross.

I was very disappointed with the pricing/value. The portions for the chicken fried chicken were laughable for the price. Overpriced. Service had also been meh. Sad, was hoping for better as my neighborhood joint. Heroes chicken fried chicken better quality, larger portion, and better value.

Went here with a pretty large group. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and fries. It was pretty good. The bread was a bit flimsy, so that could definitely improve. I am not sure what the BBQ sauce was supposed to be, but when I lifted up the bun it looked like a small spattering of ketchup. Flavor was a bit lacking. The fries were actually too thin for my taste, kind of hard to pick up. Not bad, but could definitely improve. The service was good. I would come back, but hope the menu shows some needed tweaks.

Holy shit this place is awesome. Their calamari fries are awesome. Hill salad is great if you like feta cheese. We came on Thursday and got their special $10 chicken fried chicken, and I thought Twin Peaks one was good, this one kicks its ass. You must get the pork tips I would sell my soul for those mfs. The chef must be a Mexicano because that is some straight up carnitas bs and the service was great and the bathrooms are clean. Very chill and comfy dark atmosphere. My new favorite place. The people that eat there look stuck up are all dressed up nice and drink with pinkys in the air but the food and booze is awesome so f*** it.

I came here today for dinner because of my friend's recommendation. We met up here to take advantage of the happy hour prices. So we had 4 starters for our meal ($2 off the regular price). I also had a boulevard wheat on tap ($1 off the regular price). chicarones: I honestly didn't know what to expect - she ordered it. it actually was pretty good when it came out fresh. they are like fried potato chips that have the texture of rice chips if that makes any sense. ceviche: ok, so these were really chopped up piece of fish with thin nacho chips. in my opinion, you would have to go to bonefish grill for better tasting ceviche. belgian mussels: again, she ordered it. there must have been 20 on that plate. small little guys though. I'm not a fan of mussels and I ate about 5-6 of them, so not too bad. kobe sliders: we get three of them. uh, tasty but they were overcooked. Service was friendly. Decor was very nice.

Just went there last night for a birthday party of my wifes boss. We had 30+ people in our party. I thought the food was excellent. I tried bites of several items. My favorite was my wifes flank steak. It was cooked med well (too much for me) and I still loved it. Still juicy. I had the reuben. Good sandwich. We had a pretzel. Cheese sauce is a must try. Great concept. A sports bar, but with higher end restaurant food. Its not fine dining. But some pretty tasty food.

We showed up on a Saturday with a party of 9. Ordered chips and salsa, onion rings and meatballs for appetizers. Chips and salsa came with a guacamole sauce. Meatballs were a mix of veal, chicken and beef. Onion rings were lightly breaded with virtually no grease. Very impressed with the beer list. The beer list was organised by type, with % information next to each beverage. The listings were impressive. I ordered trout with risotto topped with arugula. Phenomenal. Served with half Hill salad. Outstanding service. I have a severe food allergy. The waitress notified the kitchen staff and she reported back to me that the salad dressing I had ordered may have cross contamination with my allergen. The atmosphere is very cool- a unique bar where you can watch the games, but classier than your standard sports bar. Waitress was incredibly attentive. Plates were cleared promptly and food brought out quickly.

This place is awesome! We really enjoy coming to The Hill to catch up with friends and watch some sports. The atmosphere is great and the service is even better. We try and get something different on the menu every time we come in and it's always been fantastic food and are pleased with our choices. It's definitely the best bar and grill in town!

I like their food selection . Their ceviche and sliders are good. They have a pretty good happy hour from 3-6 pm and it includes $2 off appetizers and some other drink specials . I like how they have a patio area to enjoy . They have a good selection of drinks as well . Parking can be a pain when it's crowded. I would definitely come back here . Their burgers and onion rings are AMAZING !!!

I visited The Hill very shortly after it opened for a Tweet Up (meet up of people from Twitter for those of you who don't know). The first problem I had was the parking. there are 3 spots on the east side of the building and a handful of spots in the converted alley behind the building. I have no idea how it will adequately support the numbers I'm sure they are hoping to draw. I will say I absolutely love the decor. The dark wood and stone is amazing and I find the space very inviting. Our group of 12-15 had a long table just to the side of the host stand, in the sit down side of the dining room. For some reason there were a ton of servers, maybe because the place is new and they are training? We had 3-4 difference servers for our table alone. They have a large beer selection with lots of domestic choices, and a moderate amount of imports. I was slightly put off when I asked for a wine list. The server informed me they didn't have one, and wouldn't recommend ordering wine. Ok then. I have a few draft beers and they were decently priced for the size. The menu leans more towards upscale bar. Most of the entrees were a bit pricey for me, so I opted for an appetizer. I tried the crab cakes. I was less than impressed. The presentation was great, but the size of the cakes were small. The portion is 3 gold dollar sized cakes with a small frisee salad and two gastriques. The flavor was very under whelming. Some other friends in the group ordered sandwiches and said they were awesome. I will be back to try the Hill again, and this time I'll order a sandwich.

Really nice decor, server was super friendly, and very attentive. They have a very good beer list, though I decided to be a little adventurous and try the beer cocktails. I had the manly manhattan, which was excellent, though I would have preferred it get served in a rocks glass, as martini glasses aren't very manly. The food was excellent as well. I started with a half wedge salad, which was a very good size. Next up my wife and I split the crab cakes, and kobi sliders. The crab cakes were excellent, and so were the burgers. This place isn't cheap, but I believe the prices were fair based on our experience. We will definitely be coming back.

The Hill is awesome! First time we went there we had a burger and it was very delicious! Second time was for a big game and we had a group. Ordered drinks, and had the trout. Was VERY pleased with our experience! It's a fancy bar and grill. Gourmet food and wonderful service. Going back tonight!

I went here last night with a couple friends that wanted to try it as it just opened. I was very disappointed. The atmosphere was nice and the location is great. Service was mediocre at best. We were just going for drinks, but my friend ordered some Tempura vegetables, which they obviously forgot about it, and needed reminders, then hardly even offered a apology. I tried one of their beer cocktails, the Beer-suela, and as I knew it would be hard to make a drink with Mezcal... they failed miserably. It was awful and when the waitress asked me how it was and I told her it was awful, she made no attempt to replace it so I ended up having water as my drink with friends.

Three of us went to dinner here on a Friday night for the first time. It wasn't too busy and we were able to sit outside with no wait. That being said, our service was pretty terrible. Our waitress took awhile to bring us anything, and when we asked for refills, more beer, or additions to our meals, she forgot two or three times. The drink list is impressive, but the prices aren't that great. I'm always a fan of cheap beer, though, so I forget that most places charge more for a pint. The food ranged from okay to pretty great. We shared the chips and salsa, which said it came with "guacasalsa" as well. For $6, we each got about five chips with a tiny amount of dip. My friend was okay with this, but I like to load up on the flavor and couldn't do that without stealing all of the dip from my friends. The black bean and chick pea dip had a better amount of chips with it, as well as some veggies, so I'd recommend that appetizer. My friend also ordered the crab cakes which were a lot smaller than the server implied. She ended up ordering another app (the black bean dip) to go along with her crab cakes. My other friend ordered the shrimp tacos and reported that they were cold (not just the shrimp but the corn tortillas as well) but had good flavor. (She's also gluten free, and was able to eat the chips and try a different $9 GF beer that she hadn't seen before.) I ordered the black bean burger (thank you for the veggie option!) and subbed a wedge salad for an extra $1.50. Here's where the confusion sets in...my meal was like, $8 (until I subbed in the salad which made it $9.50 - still a reasonable price) and my burger was huge! I'm pretty sure the patty was made in house and had a great flavor. My wedge salad was also a pretty good size and was delicious. The only issue I had with my burger was the sad toppings...I got two slices of tomato and some shredded romaine on bottom of the hot burger. No salsa. I did ask for a side of sriracha aioli, and once they finally got it to me, made a good addition to my burger. To sum it all up...I think it's a nice place to go in the College Hill area, and I'm glad they have a nice beer list, but don't expect much from your servers and prepare to be confused with the prices.

Called to see if they were on a wait, was told every seat is full, again asked so does that mean ur on a wait?, the girl replied well ya but they could put me on "a list," but it would be 30min! No big deal we headed over there about 25min later and told the host we put our name on "the list" and she informed us we were late so it would be 30min, I said excuse me we called exactly 30min ago because you told us it would be 30min the host replies that we needed to arrive immediately after we call which she easily could've explained on the phone! She tried to tell us her manager yells at her if ppl are waiting so I feel as if there should be no "list"! (In other words no structure) We waited outside until a table was ready DRINKS TAKE FOREVER TO RECEIVE by the way so order your second after taking first drink of your first! We ordered what we thought was our appetizer, but the server ordered it all together so there was no dining experience for us, my steak was cold I know it was made first and sat there until the other items were finished, the rib tips were about the only "good" thing about our visit!! We knew going here we would have a $100 dinner but we thought the service and atmosphere would compliment that meal cost!! Very disappointing!! .... Not to mention if preppy loud drunk white boys amuse you... This place is for you!!!

We went opening week and it was just okay. Out of several dishes, beer was a bit off (flat and not that cold) and it is incredibly loud. Service was good but she needs to bone up more on beer info. Food we got was tasty. Did I mention it is loud? We'll go back.

Great for the under forty crowd, but the noise level for those of us over that age is just too intense. Could barely hear the waitress. Food was actually very good, the wedge salad was excellent with its green goddess dressing. My wife had the hamburger and expressed that it was the best she had eaten in quite a while. I had the baked chicken , the sauce was amazing but there was nothing else on the plate- no vegetable, no bread ? Pretty pricey, VERY noisy.

We have been waiting for this bar to open for a while and now that it has, we have been going a lot. It's a great addition to the College Hill neighborhood because we really needed a nice bar to hang out at (Mike's Wine Dive is nice, but a bit pricey and not a real "hang out" place). The Hill has good food and has been getting better. It's clear that they are still working on the menu. Some of the highlights are the Kobe Sliders, the Turkey Burger with Cranberry Relish, the Wings, and the Crabcake Appetizers. The beer menu is indeed first-rate. They've got a ton of choices, and many are on tap. They also have some rotating beers from Ommegang and Stone Brewing, which have been really good. People have been commenting on the noise, but I don't find it too bad, especially sitting in one of the many comfy booths they offer. Overall, I'm giving this a good review because the food is decent and improving, the beers are excellent, the wait staff have been consistently friendly, and it's a wonderful addition to the neighborhood.

Beer selection is OK. Beers are served way too cold. However this is my go-to place to watch the few sports teams I keep up with. The menu has good variety. The roasted chicken is delicious with huge briny caper berries. The tacos are yummy or try the trio of Kobe beef sliders. Good apps like tempura veggies and crabcakes. Fantastic mac n' cheese. Service has always been good, of course we always belly up to the bar.

Finally tried out The Hill tonight. Great beer list, definitely top 10 in Wichita. Decor was great, nice atmosphere. But quite loud. Wish the food and service kept up with the drink list. Started with the ceviche. Flavors were good, although the shrimp and scallops were diced so small, they were almost unrecognizable. I ordered the Hill salad. Thinking it must be a great salad to share the restaurant name. This should have just been named 'Lettuce' because that is all there was. The mixed greens were fresh and tender. My $8 "salad" included the equivalent of one and a half cherry tomatoes (cut in thirds), 6 rings of pepperocini, and equivalent of one kalamata olive (sliced). Wow... Just Wow. Dressing was a feta vinegarette (but really no feta to be seen). On to the $12 Hill burger with onion rings. This was the greasiest burger and rings I have seen in a very long time. Good thing the napkins were cloth, as I'd hate to see how many paper ones would have been needed. The 'pretzel' bun was almost soggy from grease. On top of this, the beef patty was not that great .. Looked to be a manufactured patty and had no flavor what so ever. The place seemed packed with servers, 4 behind the bar, and counted three managers on duty. I would have expected great service with this level of staffing, but drinks took forever to make and deliver to our table. I had to stop our server every time we needed a refill. Restaurant was only about half full. Overall, a great beer list but shouldn't have high expectations beyond that. Owners need to invest a bit of their labor costs into delivering much better food.

The decor at The Hill Bar & Grill was beautiful. They need to do something to the ceiling in order to keep the noise down, it wasn't bad when we arrived around 6:00 PM but by the time we left at 8:00 PM and there were several more people in there it was quit noisy. The service was average, the food was slightly above average all except the Pumpkin Brûlée and it was terrible, the crust was hard the filling was dry and had very little taste plus it was $7.00. When the server came by after bringing the dessert to find out how we liked it we told her the same thing I'm writing in this review and she basically said, "oh, I'm sorry you don't like it". She made no attempt at customer service regarding the fact the dessert was horrible. I think at least they could have given us a coupon for a free dessert to get us back. The fish and chips were very good and the pulled pork sandwich was average but after the dessert the entire place left a bad taste in my mouth. I may return some day or not.

Me and a friend went there today and it was VERY GOOD! Our server Nija was very accommodating and polite. We went with the Yelp recommendations. Street tacos and black bean and chick pea dip. All of it was excellent. I had the carnitas, carne asada, and chicken tacos and my friend had the shrimp tacos. My friend loved them and the dip. The only reason 4 stars and not 5? The rice was just pedestrian, bland even. However, the service and tacos are excellent. We will be coming back.
