I have dined at Sweet Basil a few times a year for 17 years. I stopped going a couple years ago because the establishment had truly fallen off. It was grimy, dank, old-looking and feeling, but not in good ways that inspire nostalgia. The food had also suffered, and it was easy to tell that the passion had been lost among the proprietors. After the fire that forced Sweet Basil to close and remodel, I decided to give them another try on Saturday, May 16, 2015. I'll say that the restaurant has been updated entirely; it was absolutely unrecognizable as the old establishment. A completely redesigned dining room, new floors, lighting, a new, large bar area (sadly they mounted a flat screen TV on the wall at the bar, which is utterly out of place, seems obligatory, and serves no benefit to the patrons), new artwork by local artists, etc. However, with all the changes and updates to the restaurant, the menu is the same, if only pared-down, as it has been for ages. The experience was good. It wasn't great or excellent in any way, but it also wasn't terrible--it really was just okay. The dining room is awfully loud, and the seating is crammed together. They have a long, shared booth against the back wall, along which they really pack customers in, so you will be able to tune-in to the conversations of others without even wanting to. The service was rather slow and unresponsive, but not godawful. The meal started with salad, which was drenched in dressing (seriously, it was flooded), and they also brought bread to the table (same bread recipe they have always had), though it was only three small pieces. More bread was never offered, and we had to request it. The meal was fine, though it took a remarkably long time to arrive. Had the food been better it wouldn't have really been an issue, since high quality food is worth waiting for--yet this wasn't high quality food; it's the same food SB has always served, which is just okay, yet it took twice as long to get. We ended up ordering dessert (a chocolate cake), that was okay. It wasn't anything special, and was on the dry side (probably due to spending several days in a fridge). Overall, the interior looks so much better, the service was slow, and the food was, again, okay. I'm not blown away, and I'm not horribly dissatisfied. Im not sure that I'll ever go back, but maybe if I can't think of somewhere else to go on some weeknight in the future, I may settle for Sweet Basil.

The food was so bland.. Sweet basil is no longer what it was. Most people go for the wings but when they came out it was like they didn't drain the oil at all. The salads are nothing special. The pasta was cold. It's like cheap italian food for ppl who have never had authentic italian.

I would've given it a three star had we not paid $50 for two appetizers and two entrees (15% tip incl). I don't expect great Italian food in ICT. Great food from other cultures does exist here, but they're not that easy to find. This wasn't bad Italian by any means, but I can get the same at Olive Garden for less. I ordered the clam pasta with olive oil, lemon, and garlic. It was dry and the little sauce there was was mediocre. And of course, the pasta was overcooked. The restaurant did include an abundant amount of clam in the pasta though. My husband ordered a seafood pasta, which was also overcooked. And though I thought the sauce was better flavored, he said it was forgettable. The appetizers were by far the best part of our meal. We got the mushroom and the baked ravioli. Tonight, my husband made pasta for dinner, and it was leagues better than Sweet Basil. Like I said, I would've rated it better had our bill included wine or desserts...but if you're a small town Italian restaurant, you don't charge big city prices for average fare. Our waitress, Bree(?), was sweet and provided great service. Lots of older ppl frequent this place.

My husband and I have dined here for years, and we love this place. We're excited it finally opened again, thought it wasn't going to make it through the remodeling. Our new Costco took 3 mths to build, and this remodel was around 14mths?!!! It does look nice, totally different vibe, more modern touch, but I miss that Italian ambience of a good home cooked meal. But, it's all about the food, so if it's mind-blowing then nothing matters. It was a busy lunch, as there was a wait, they gave us a table next to the buffet. Big mistake, the buffet is crammed into the back corner of the restaurant, and busy buffet line curved around the tables where customers were trying to eat. Awkward, this old lady actually rested her butt on my table, to take break from standing I guess!! Then later I noticed she made her way through everyone waiting in line to get to the entree line, which is next to salad line. There's only 1 line lady!! The food was okay, it was good but not awesome. Something about it was missing, quality & standards wasn't quite like before, food was slow in reloading the buffet. Waitress looked like she didn't want to be there, and restaurant seems chaotic, not in control. Dissappointed that the remodel didn't make the service better.

Pretty typical Italian fare. Not sure how it is different from any other Italian food. Pasta was cooked properly, peppers and onions tasted fresh. I had a fettuccine with marinara sauce, onions, peppers, mushrooms and sausage. The salad was DRENCHED in Italian dressing (serious puddle). Quiet atmosphere, ambiance fine. Good, friendly service.

We return to this restaurant time and again for the great wine list that is very fairly priced and wonderful, personal service. Charlie runs a nice, welcoming restaurant. The staff is knowledgeable about the food and gives good advice on the wines featured. Also the restaurant supports a number of important charities in the city. The food is fair to good and occasionally great. Improvements in the side dish vegetables are noted. The tenderloin, veal and lasagna are always pretty good. I like the sliced sausage atop the penne pasta as an "everyday" dish. The Italian food will not rival that attainable in Kansas City or Chicago (of course you don't pay those cities' prices either for food or wine). All in all a solid choice for a pleasurable evening with friends or family wrapped in warm hospitality.

The only cuisines that tastes good in buffet form are Indian and Thai (though I'm reserving judgment on barbecue, as I have not yet been to one). Food isn't meant to sit around for half an hour under a heat lamp, and the product is never as good as if someone in the kitchen made one dish just for you. Where buffets lack in flavor, texture, and doneness, however, they make up for in quantity, variety, and All That You Care to Eat. I'm interested in the variety aspect, but not so much the other two. Sweet Basil didn't change my mind about the buffets that pass muster, but I was expecting to be let down in that respect even before I entered. In an effort to get as whole of an opinion of Sweet Basil as possible, I went for the buffet so I could get a wide sampling of menu items, even if that meant sacrificing some with respects to the quality of the food. For any buffet, it's good to be popular, as that ensures that items are frequently coming from the kitchen. Sweet Basil isn't a particularly large restaurant, but what it does have for seating was mostly filled with folks from the hospital, in addition to a large number of elderly. I've eaten at places like this before - neighborhood favorites that typically don't create anything too radical in order to keep their core audience happy. Regardless, I was here to see what Sweet Basil was culinarilly capable of, so I grabbed a plate and hit the buffet. There wasn't as many overtly Italian dishes as you may be expecting. teriyaki chicken and chicken wings were served alongside some lasagna, spaghetti with olive oil, garlic, and basil, some rice, some Italian vegetables, meatballs in a Marsala sauce, pasta and alfredo sauce, and some garlic toast. The garlic toast was soggy, the spaghetti was a little stale, and I wasn't even going to bother with the thick cream-laden alfredo sauce. These are all things inherent in the buffet, though. Flavor-wise - I enjoyed the idea of presenting a spaghetti dish that didn't have a red sauce. The meatballs, too, were homemade and decent. Surprisingly, it was the red sauce in the lasagna that gave me the biggest glimmer of hope for their actual potential - providing a strong flavor base that would work well in plenty of other dishes. Another item that caught me off guard was the chicken wings, which were freshly fried in a breading of Italian bread crumbs, something I wasn't expecting, and which actually tasted pretty good. They were served with a basil chili sauce which was an extension of their homemade Italian salad dressing, but still unique. For dessert, I had a slice of cake consisting of alternating sponge cake and chocolate buttercream which was average, though the presentation was nice. I don't recommend the buffet because it's difficult to maintain quality on such a large level, but some of the flavors I experienced during my exploration left me hopeful of the potentials of the dinner menu. The prices are quite competitive, too.

Outdated Decor Low-quality food Below average service I started going to Sweet Basil 11 years ago when the original owner was still around. I remember thinking it had a speakeasy feel to it and the food was at best - average. I visited a few months ago wondering why this place is even still around. I figured that they would have remodeled and modernized the menu. I was more than disappointed, as was my date. The server kept forgetting items, even though there was only one other couple in the restaurant. The wine selection was entry-level at best. The food was very low quality and not deserving of a candle being lit on the table. I suppose this place might work for a under 20 crowd, but I don't have much to say for this place. They have had 3+ owners since I went 11 years ago according to the waiter.

Sweet Basil is the home of my favorite lunch buffet in Wichita. For less than $10 you can stuff your face with the best Italian cheese bread and unlimited cheesecake. The lasagna is also wonderful. I'm not too sure why teriyaki chicken is on their buffet but it is actually really good.

A must try place!! Delicious food and good menu size. Everyone is wonderful! I go typically 2-3 times a month and the service and food is always wonderful!

Been going here for years. Everything is very good. They definitely need a larger space because it gets crowded easily. The Tournedos (small filets) are delicious, all of the veal is cooked perfectly. You get salad and garlic bread that is homemade and always warm. try the calamari for an appetizer!

Booked a booth here on a Saturday night, glad we did, the place was packed and that's a good thing. Atmosphere is old style, service was impeccable and the food YUMMY! Had stuffed mushrooms to start and chicken picatta and shrimp alfredo to end with. Had tickets to The Nutcracker thereafter and were a little pressed for time. They take their time serving etc...no fault on them, we just need to prepare better next time. Prices are reasonable and we will return!

Great priced lunch buffet, with great tasting food, and quality service. Be sure to get the wings with the sauce over the top.

Hubby worked here 20+ years ago when he was a teenager, and his family ate here many times when he was growing up. It's still a popular place for his family to meet for dinner. If you come on Friday or Saturday evening I recommend reservations as it does fill up quickly. The food is good, I especially enjoy the penne de mare and the eggplant parmesan. The stuffed mushrooms are a great appetizer, but stay away from the calimari-it's not too great! Hubby always has the chicken marsala--his favorite for years. Their evening specials are also very delicious! They have a nice wine and beer list, I especially have enjoyed the Italian beer Maretti here. The house salad is great, as is the garlic bread. I've never come to the buffet, so I don't know about the food quality then. As far as desserts, the carrot cake here is great! In the past, the Valentine's Day dinner has been pretty special.

I love the lunch buffet here! I've actually only had dinner here once, and while it was very good, it was expensive. The lunch buffet is under $10, and the food is fantastic! The buffet includes a garden salad and a caesar salad usually, with an array of fresh fruit. Steamed veggies and amazing garlic bread compliment the fabulous teriyaki chicken with rice, the eggplant parmesean, lasagne, and fettuccine. Recently, they started serving fresh-made fried fish with wonderful tartar sauce on Fridays as well (which is why Friday is my favorite day to come here). They always have fresh brownies, cheesecake, and either carrot cake or another lighter cake on the dessert buffet as well. Yum! Seating is limited, but the wait is never too long because people are generally in and out pretty quickly. The staff goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome, and if you're a repeat customer, they get to know you well enough to memorize your drink orders! Highly recommended in every way!

I've been there a couple of times. This restaurant is a good choice if the mainstream Italian restaurant is not your thing.

I took my fiancee here for a romantic Valentine's Day date with some high hopes and lofty claims from others who had been here. My expectations were exceeded! The food was exquisite and the service wonderful. Definitely worth every penny here.

Fast and attentive service on a busy Saturday night; flavorful, well-prepared Italian food, though a lighter hand with cheese toppings would be better. Decent value, friendly.

Reliable lunch buffet with standard faire - teriyaki chicken, rice, steamed vegetables, some kind of pasta and lasagne, and an Italian meat. Good garlic bread. Fresh fruit, and small salad bar. Tasty desserts. Hearty meal for under $10. Wish they would throw in a new item on the lunch buffet every so often. I'm a repeat customer and I enjoy this place. Nice staff, great service.

I've been here a few times and I don't understand why so many people like it. I didn't like the dry teriyaki chicken I had, and the egg plant Parmesan was mediocre. I had their catered food at a function and didn't care for that either. It reminds me of Italian Garden, and I hate the Italian Garden. It's gotten so many great reviews so I've returned expecting a better experience, but I've now had a few and I can say I just don't like this restaurant.

Restaurant recently reopened May 2015 - interior is totally redone, cool and trendy. Food was fantastic - highly recommend the bruschetta appetizer, house salad, and tournedos steak. Husband had Italian sausage and pepper sauté and said it was his favorite dish of all time. Superior service delivered by David. Very reasonably priced as well. Owner Charli is charming.

Well the whole experience was okay. The design of the new place is more modern than before, obviously. However, there were some design elements that made me think "who's idea was that." For instance the host station is right in front of a door to the kitchen. We ordered an bread appetizer that was pretty good. Salads came next and they were cut up lettuce carrots, croutons, a cherry tomato, and a slice of cucumber. The main event I ordered the Au Gratin shrimp broccoli Alfredo-broccoli was good, the shrimp was big and cooked excellent however the Alfredo was just noodles in and over cheesed sauce. My wife ordered the the Cheese Manicotti covered in afredo she described it as "just a bowl of cheese" with a noodle in the middle. She didn't seem to be a fan. The service was excellent.
