Here's the problem with Americanization: it dilutes the experience. Sure, perhaps the average Wichitan might be a little too uncomfortable dining at a place like Saigon Bistro or My Tho where there's lot of foreign characters on the menu, but at least you know in what the restaurant specializes, and you can probably get a good meal out of it. When you look at something like Big Saigon, which decorates the walls with baseball paraphernalia and offers a twelve-page menu of Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese food, it works hard to create an atmosphere appropriate for everybody (and it worked, judging by the popularity during my visit), but before you know it you're sitting in Saigon Restaurant eating fried rice, and that ain't right. With that said, the pho should have definitely been in their area of expertise, and while it didn't disappoint, it wasn't great, nor even better than the restaurant of very similar name right down the street. Though if there's one thing that Little and Big Saigon share, it's the blandness of their broth, which again tasted like straight-up chicken broth in a bowl. Still homemade, but it wasn't a very good base to start building my pho. Another thing I noticed was the broth was only of moderate temperature when it arrived at my table, which sounds fine, but I need that mother scaldingly hot if it's going to cook my bean sprouts, peppers and stay hot enough to break down my beef's connective tissue. Like others have noticed, the quantity was a little smaller than others I've eaten for the price, too. There were other small things like regular (not-thai) basil and the use of larger-cut jalapenos that didn't ring true to me in comparison to other pho in the city. I think my experience can best be summed up when I placed my order for my pho dac biet. The very polite Vietnamese man taking my order asked me no less than twice to confirm that I indeed want the pho that contained the tripe, as if he wasn't use to people like me coming in and ordering that. Big Saigon is a fine place for Vietnamese food. As for the other parts of the menu, I'll leave that up to you to find out.

There are 3 Vietmanese restaurants on Broadway. I chose Saigon simply because it had the most cars in the lot. Ordered some Spring Rolls, Pho Tai (beef) and a Vietmanese iced coffee. To say that the service is fast would be an incredible understatement! The Spring Rolls were fresh and full of not only shrimp, but also thin slices of roasted pork. I'd never had them prepared like this, and they've become my new standard. The Pho was hot and savory. Instead of limes, they dress their o with lemons. Nothing that distracted by how much beef was in the bowl. The beef was extremely tender, and not fatty or gristly at all. There was a good proportion of beef to noodles, and I was left completely satisfied. The place was clean, and the owner is a funny little guy who greets everyone as if they're regulars. Oh, the Vietmanese coffee was to die for. It's basically an iced latte, and fills in as a good substitute for dessert. I'll definitely be going back there the next time I'm staying in downtown Wichita.

Definitely not the best Vietnamese restaurant in town but it's decent. They claim on their menus to have the best pho/soup in town, but this is untrue. Their pho, is good but it doesn't hold a candle to My Pho. However the chicken pho is decent, and I enjoy their egg rolls. Not to mention they have a HUGE menu. I've been a few times with friends, and the service has always been good and they're fast. If you're near by it's a nice place to check out at least once, but if you're searching for the best Vietnamese food in town, Saigon isn't it.

The atmosphere is always festive and the staff are jolly at Saigon. It's been said many times already, but the spring rolls are fantastic here. My wife accidentally ordered the wrong thing, and they were happy to exchange it for what she really wanted at no charge. We appreciated that! Check this place out!

The pho was pretty good but it was a little americanized. The spring roll was ok.

This is a fine place to have lunch. Decent noodles. Good spring rolls. It is what it is. Since when did the word Americanized become a bad word. THIS IS AMERICA. Call it a vietnamese inspired american restaurant and leave it at that. The service is a little weak, but the food is not as disappointing as some people may think. As for size, I'm 6'3" 240 lbs and the food seems to fill me up just fine so take that for what its worth. I would say the best time to go would be lunch. The service is fast. The pace is quick, but seats are full, yet I have never waited for a seat. Good luck and I guess you can make up your own mind.

It takes us forever to order here sometimes because there is just so much stuff on the menu. But it is great! Half the fun is trying to figure out what to order. I've always liked what I ordered even if it wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. And honestly we are still learning. This time we ordered the Combination Platter. The description just said, "made especially for you" so we had no idea what would be on it. It had egg rolls, crab rangoon, shrimp chips, spring rolls, chicken with almonds, and pork. My husband ordered a bowl with pork not knowing that the combo would have a ton of it. Live and learn I guess. Speaking of the pork, it has this excellent almost hot pink color. It looked so weird to me at first, but it is just delicious. Normally we order the "roll your own" spring rolls with shrimp, cashews, bean sprouts, cucumbers, carrots, and a variety of other things. We opted for the combo plate this time but next time it is back to the spring rolls. It's just a big plate of fresh food with rice papers to roll it with. It's served with a clear sauce and I add some Sriracha. blueberrylemon.net

The spring rolls were really good, especially the dipping sauce! I got the rice noodles with chicken & shrimp that didn't taste too bad, but wasn't fabulous. It was so-so. Fast service. I agree with the previous reviews about the decor. A bit tacky! Price was not too bad. I was disappointed in the lack of variety thereof of banh mi (Vietnamese sandwiches). The amount of food was enough for me, & I'm tiny & usually don't eat very much. There was hand sanitizer (now there's something that I don't typically see in restaurants) on each table. Wide variety of food on the menu.

Food was okay and price was okay. Pho was good. There aren't that many asian restaurants in wichita, so I would still recommend going here.

Best Vietnamese Food in Wichita. The service is down to a science. Entrees are fresh and delicious. Prices are better than reasonable. This outfit has lots of imitators but they are the originators of introducing Wichita to Vietnamese cuisine.

I LOVE this restaurant! The food is wonderful and very reasonably priced. The service is very good. I like to stop in as often as possible when I'm in Wichita. If there was 1 restaurant I wish I could take with me back to Lafayette this would be it.

Been eating here for the better part of ten years and my is It good! They have some of the best Vietnamese food in wichita. I alternate between the 45 and 68. Both are very good. Try to come a little before or after the lunch rush if you need a really fast lunch. You can tell the whole. Operation is a family affair, and the owner is also very involved in the community and is a nice guy to boot! Try it, odds are you will like it.

This is great Vietnamese food! I came from out of town (California) and wasn't expecting much. Most of the places I tried in wichita that were ethnic turned out to be Americanized versions and not very good so I was surprised that this was not only good for wichita it was better than some of the Vietnamese restaurants in my town. The food was piping hot, fresh and they had a great selection. I had the pho tai and the wonton egg noodle soup on the second day and both were delicious. The service is prompt and a little cafeteria style so don't go for the ambience go for the food

Been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years. And yes it's awesome. I always order 49. Too much to select from so I go with this. Great quick service, good food for the price. A must go place in downtown.

My prior review of Saigon was less than flattering. Turns out, you need to go in knowing what to order. I like restaurants where it's not so much like playing roulette when choosing off the menu, but here at Saigon, it's worth it b/c I've hadn't had ca chien or canh chua this good since my mother. And I dare say that the latter was better than Mom's. I don't know if the fried fish (ca chien) is even on the menu, b/c I didn't look for it. The ca chien was PERFECTLY fried. You know this, b/c you can eat the bones near the surface of the fish. The tail fin was essentially a fish chip. Ever heard Andrew Zimmern say that and had no idea what he was talking about? Well come here and try it. Beautiful. The fish sauce the fish was served in was a bit bland, but they also brought out pure fish sauce with chili peppers, and that was the perfect remedy. The tamarind catfish soup (canh chua) was a balanced symphony of flavors. I love how the veggies soaked up all the broth and tasted so good with rice. The catfish was delicious when dipped into the fish sauce. Salty and sour with that hit from the fresh chilis. I could eat either dish all day. I brought my husband back a couple of days later to try the ca chien (he's not crazy about the canh chua like me), and he loved it. It's been a about 5 yrs since I first visited and had the mi xao don and mi tap cam. I'd avoid those dishes if the recipe has not since changed, but the ca chien and the canh chua are prepared well and you'd be hard pressed to find better.

Totally disappointed. I really should have known better than to go look for reviews for a Vietnamese restaurant in a small city on Yelp, instead of listening to my friend's suggestions and advices on avoiding this place. The decoration and atmosphere was nice enough, but the place was Americanized and catered to American palettes. The bowls were very small for the price we paid for the noodle soups. The spring rolls weren't great, and the dipping sauce was super salty. My friend's Pho rice noodles were all broken when he got it, and I had to ask the servers for a new bowl. They came back with a different type of sturdy/thick rice noodles.. Lol.

I adore Saigon! I always order the #49 - Chicken and Noodles with Egg Roll (I get cravings.... must. have. Egg. Roll.)... so I can't speak for the rest of the dishes. However, all my friends who have tried other items love their meals as well. You might want to be wary of the shrimp dishes at times (as with any restaurant that serves shrimp); I've had a friend become ill after she had some... but that's been the only time. The noodle dishes are fresh-tasting, but can be a little greasy along with the egg rolls, but it's a good grease... I wouldn't want it any other way. The decor is not anything spectacular and it is a little crammed for space, but those two items make it more authentic for me. Service is great. I have only had to wait during the busy lunch hour once and my food always comes out quickly. The young lady at the counter (who sometimes serves) is always sweet and cracks jokes. Overall, I find Saigon very authentic in its delicious food and presentation. It's a great lunch spot, which is sometimes hard to come by in Wichita.

I wonder if the real Saigon is as wonderful as the Saigon Restaurant? If you go during the usual rush hours, the place is packed, and for a good reason. The food is excellent and fresh, the service is quick and friendly, and the atmosphere has an Asian decor that I love (lanterns, plastic foliage, etc). The establishment is setup with individual tables and two large group tables, so who knows who you'll be eating by. I always get the # 50 (noodle/chicken/vegetable bowl) and an order of Spring Rolls (those are fantastic). I've also tried the Crab Rangoon, Won ton Soup, Moo Goo Gai Pan, and some kind of Crispy Noodle with Chicken in a brown sauce /w vegetable, and don't forget the Jasmine Iced Tea!! And if you become a fan, stop by during the Chinese New Year, and watch the festivities unfold.

I visited this place today for lunch as I absolutely love Vietnamese food and haven't had any since being in CA. A woman I work with mentioned this place so I thought I'd try it. I thought it was pretty good but I've had better. I had shrimp spring rolls.. rice paper wrapped around shrimp, rice noodles, carrot shreds & cilantro. I don't like cilantro so I removed as much of that as I could. The insides tasted good but the rice paper wrap was tough. You get a peanut sauce (?) to dip. I ended up scooping the insides out and adding it to my main lunch entry.. which was... Charbroiled pork over rice noodles, peanuts, carrot shreds with fish sauce and a fried egg roll. The egg roll was greasy (not uncommon) but delicious! The rice noodle bowl with fish sauce poured over was tasty but like I said, I've had better. I tried the pork because my friend commented how delicious she thought it was. Maybe I'll try chicken next time. I'll go back but might look around for other places too. The service was VERY fast so you know everything is prepped and put together as needed. I wonder if the meats are precooked as well.

At lunchtime if you go in and look around, you can't throw a rock without hitting a doctor. The service is fast, and the food is consistently high quality and really hot. I always get the pho, and I like to add the spicy ketchup type sauce that is on the table. The restaurant is loud and cramped, but it's really sunny, and it seems clean. It is decorated with traditional Asian photographs, I think it's sad another poster said it was "creepy". It different, but authentic. The food may sometimes seem strange to a caucasian palate, but I'm sure not everyone feels that way. English is not strong here, so you order by number, and enjoy! I came once on the Chinese New Year and they gave us red envelopes with special fortunes or dollar bills in them, it was really neat. Overall, this place is a regular in the lunch rotation!

Saigon: quaint, authentic, cheap, a little bit creepy. Everything you want from a Vietnamese restaurant! Local Vietnamese are always here in the front room, chain-smoking and watching taped Asian television shows on a big TV.

Overall, I am impressed with the size of the menu. I've eaten at least six different things so far and I haven't had anything bad. Love the fish sauce! The seating is less than to be desired - cramped. Especially if you are there during the lunch rush. Parking is impossible. Out of eight or so times of eating there I have only gotten a spot in the lot once.

Egg rolls are to die for. I dream about it. Spring rolls are good too. Their charbroiled pork is fantastic --- #45 is my jam. So many options on the menu, but once you find something you love it's hard not to keep ordering it.

Went 7/7/2015 around 8pm. Went to dinner with friends. 3 total Ordered the #49. All our food was great as always, Did not rush us and made us feel at home. Have been going for 10 years and have never had a bad meal. Would recommend Saigon to anyone!!!!!

Really good vegetable and tofu pho, crab raggoons are awesome and so are the spring rolls. The lil old man working there is super sweet and the price is right! Highly recommended.

My friends insisted on going here instead of Little Saigon, which I've been to before and liked very much. First of all, the restaurant is quite unattractive. The decor is tacky, but gives a very comfortable feeling, as if you were eating at a friends living room. This establishment has good, friendly service. I ordered the vegetarian pan fried noodles and I could taste that all the veggies used were canned-yuck. I wouldn't eat here again.

Our family have been fans of this place for years. Love the spring roll sauce and order #49. We're branching out to the soups now.

I've tried this place twice now. The first time my uncle took me out here to feast on fish. Along with his co workers and my roomie, we shared the family dinner of a whole fried cat fish in fish sauce (my fav!!!so crispy and so good!!), ca kho (2nd fav), some type of canh/soup with seafood fixings, and some other dishes that I forgot... But I def recommend the fried catfish if you can get that alone..not sure if you can. I don't know what the other people were talking about, but it tasted pretty authentic to me! The second time I was treated out by work. They ordered spring rolls, egg rolls, and crab rangoons as starters. I was pretty much full after all that so I didn't order any entrees. Just a note, the spring rolls are HUGE. I'm not used to seeing a roll with such girth. The egg rolls were larger than usual, but freaking delicious! You can wrap it in the lettuce leaf they give you so it doesn't get all crumbly and you don't get all that oil on your fingers. Dip it in the fish sauce too. YUM! I liked the crab rangoons too, but I love cream cheese in general. These were a little over cooked, but whatever, I ate the whole thing. I must try this one last time before I leave Wichita!! Also, I like how they have hand sanitizer bottles at each table. Convenient much?? Don't get this mixed up with the other Saigon eatery down the street.

I've been eating here for 20 years, it's a great place for vietnamese food. The service is fast and the quality and freshness is great. The spring rolls are a must try as is the french coffee. For those who don't know, the french coffee is coffee that is slow dripped into a glass with a little sweetened condensed milk in the bottom. You let it sit at your table as it drips. After it's done, you stir it all together and then pour it over ice. It tastes very chocolatey but it's just the coffee and the milk. Very rich. Their jack fruit drink is good as well. Their chinese food is good also, seasoned a little differently than traditional, but a nice change. You can't go wrong here. Don't be afraid, just jump in.

Definitely the first Vietnamese restaurant I've ever eaten at, and I was a little unsure at first. The service was great and faster than I expected, the environment, while cramp, was really authentic feeling and I liked being in it. I ordered Shrimp Chow Mein, had shrimp chips, coconut soda, and crab rangoon. Their crab rangoon was better than most I've ever had, and the shrimp chips and drink were really good also. The Shrimp Chow Mein was a LOT better than I though it would be. It didn't look to appetizing at first, but I was wrong. I loved every bite of it, and I definitely wouldn't mind going back.
