Came here not expecting much as I'm from Southern California. The food was really good! Ordered the carnitas and the Burritos Mexocanos. Both had really good flavor and our server was attentive and prompt.

Service was great but the food? No so great. The chile Colorado tasted more like tomato paste. Found a lot of fat in their pork. One of my friends had their enchiladas and said it tasted like it came from a can. It just doesn't taste like Mexican Food.

If you like Americanized Mexican food with no flavor, this is your place. My coworker and I were very disappointed. We ordered the guacamole and it tasted like avocado. I had the fajitas and the meat was chewy. I hope I can find better Mexican food on my next trip to Wichita. They get one star because they serve Carta Blanca beer, hard to find in the US.

Really good fajitas and white queso. Good drink specials and very traditional Mexican food menu.

The drinks are ok but what disappointed me was their paella. I think it should have been called rissoto- paella. I would have giving it a better review but it was nothing like paella. It really looked like rissoto.

Decent food and reasonably priced. Liked the decor as well.

Good service and atmosphere. Ordered fajitas - no seasoning and beans were bland. Quite disappointed as I have several friends who frequent this place.

The five-star review is for the 21st Street Playa Azul, where we have always been treated wonderfully and had great food! I have never had a bad experience at that one. We have dined at Washington Playa Azul several times and were seated in an alcove, alone, and mostly forgotten in a mostly-empty restaurant while employees whooped and hollered it up and ignored that we were there. The restaurant always smells like sewage for some reason, and once there were no lights in the ladies' restroom. If you want a great Playa, go to the one on 21st.

I JUST moved from San Diego...as in "shares a boarder with Mexico" San Diego. I lived there for 27 years so my expectations for Mexi food elsewhere were skeptically low. Went here on a blind date for Valentines day and of course the guy picked the place due to my incompetence of the area. I walk in and the decor was not disappointing. It didn't try too hard to be Mexico. It was a "hey, we know we're in the midwest, we're gonna do what we can with what we got". The service was excellent. Especially considering it was getting on the late side of the evening. The staff wasn't pushy whatsoever. They didn't make us feel like they were trying to purge us. I was really hitting it off with my date and was being very indecisive about what I wanted. They waiter must have come back 3 times and waited 15 minutes for me to finally order. The usual complementary chips and salsa didn't fail to impress. I ordered 2 enchiladas a la carte and true mexi girl fashion, wanted hot sauce. They brought out a saucer of salsa. Automatically I thought....Um..."where's the Chalula/Tapatio?". I gave the hot salsa a try before I started hounding them for hot SAUCE. I'm thinking it's gonna literally be "weaksauce" given it's the midwest and nobody knows "hot" out here. I was mistaken. My date and I kept choking on the sauce and it gave us a lot of reason to laugh and drink a little more. It was an awesome burn! I recommend this place to the Mexi food critics and skeptics. The ONLY thing I would improve about this place was the restrooms. One stall was locked with no one in it, there were papertowels strewn across the floor and the bathroom itself was super tiny. But then again, who knows what kind of rush they got for the earlier dinner crowd!

Great mexican food. Fast friendly service. Need a quick lunch spot? This place will get you in and out in no time. Wanna meet with a big group to get the night started with some margaritas? This place will accomodate perfectly. Vibrant atmosphere and extensive menu.

Even the chips were stale and tasteless.... The chicken taco was fair, the jalapeños and cheese were nothing more than jalapeño poppers and were served on pico making them soggy. The Mexican wings were soggy and the wing sauce was heavily leaning toward ketchup. We should have left at the chips!

I know I may be jaded since I live in Dallas, but I don't think so. I went with a group of 6 for lunch and we all had something different. We ordered queso but it did not show up until the meal came. And no matter if you had enchiladas, chimicunga, or tamales is all got slathered in the same sauce. Luckily the sauce was not too bad but when I order something with meat I would like to receive meat. I think the queso con carna actually had more meat in it. The one saving grace I can say is it was cheap and super fast

Horrible! Menus were dirty (@ lunch, Wed) and the server didn't even know what a Sangria was when it was on the menu! Salsa runny/chips bad, Sangria wasn't a Sangria...we left! But then heard horror stories about nuked food, etc. The 4-5 stars can only be employees! Avoid!!!

Great food, friendly service, attractive decor at reasonable prices.

A great location can make up for alot of things and old town seems to help buisnesses stay crowded. I am by no means trying to lead this review into a negative direction, because the food was good (nothing spectacular), the service was quick and friendly, and there is plenty of space for even the busiest of nights. All I am saying is that in another location this place might not do as well, but it's busy for a reason. The chips were fresh and the salsa was tasty. I like other places better, but you can't beat the location.

This place is kinda stinky inside. The service was quick and food okay, but you can't pay the bill at your table. You have to queue up at the cash register to get out the door. But it is cheap. Not a place I'm coming to again.

So glad they opened a location in West Wichita. The downtown location is definitely more festive, but it's nice to have their tasty menu a bit closer to home. I will agree with reviewer that said it's a bit smelly in there, but I think it's the cleaning solution they use. The west one wasn't as bad until you hit the restrooms. Up until recently I'd predominiately been going during lunch and eating off their lunch menu...great prices, super fast, and yummy. However I now have a new favorite dish, Playa Azul Enchiladas. These are chicken enchilads covered in the white cheese dip...so rich and yummy. One of my friends said they went last Saturday and had $1, 12 ounce beers...pretty good price if he wasn't confused! I'll definitely make sure I check that out in the near future.

Love it! I go to the Playa Azul in Hutchinson about once a week in Hutchinson, but have also been to this location. Playa Azul is one of the few restaurants in Wichita that serves good sweet tea. I love the parillada mexicano and the molcajete mexicano. The one drawback for this location is that the molcajete mexicano is not actually served in a molcajete. I asked my server why it wasn't served in the molcajete and they said "city ordinance". The parillada mexicano is huge and I usually share this with two co-workers and still have left overs. The molcajete is big enough for two to share. My favorite restaurant!

Can I give this zero stars? When my husband and I went, the service was ridiculously poor and the food was so salty that it was practically inedible. In fact, I didn't eat mine. Fat chance trying to get any help from the absentee waitstaff though... I had to go home and eat something instead. Disgusting. I don't understand what people see in this hell-hole.

Visiting the Midwest in business and having had my fill of the excellent barbecue to be had, I was in the mood for something different and picked this place based on the 4-star average review on my mobile app. Warning signs I should have heeded: The place smells bad. No words to describe it, other than it smells very unlike a good Mexican restaurant. Stale unsalted chips from a bag and salsa that must have been nothing more than tomato sauce straight from a can. Ask the waitress what kinds of tacos and enchiladas they offer, and she responds "beef". I could go on, but you already get the idea. I ordered what I always order the first time I try a new Mexican restaurant: beef taco and a cheese enchilada, rice and beans. After having eaten at scores of such restaurants over the years, I have found this combo to be the most reliable gauge of quality. The food came rather quickly. There were no beans. A merciful thing considering the state of the rest if the plate. The "taco" consisted of a store-bought shell filled with an unidentifiable ground meat substance, topped with lettuce and melted jack cheese. Next to the alleged taco was a heap of white rice and peas. Next to this leguminous abomination were two rolled corn tortillas submerged in red sauce. The sauce had no chile flavor and an overpowering taste of allspice. The enchiladas were stuffed with a generous amount of rubbery jack cheese. The taco tasted worse than it looked. I couldn't stomach the thought of eating the rice. The worst part of this experience is that the establishment was staffed by real Spanish-speaking Mexicans. The food was as authentic as sautéed ground beef slathered in ketchup served between slices of Wonder bread and called "barbecue". I've read of EU treaties that regulate the production of traditional foods like prosciutto and Swiss cheese to ensure quality and authenticity. I regret that there is no such provision in NAFTA.

Your usual Mexican. However, after the Big Monster Margarita you'll be fine.

Great food and extremely fast and friendly service. I try to go here almost once a week, love the white queso and salsa! Prices are surprisingly low for being surrounded by a little more expensive restaurants. Great deal, and I've heard their drinks are good too. It's location is perfect, right next to the Museum of World Treasures and other great attractions in Old Town!

I really liked the place. The service was great and Quick! The food was pretty good too. The reason they didn't get a 5 star from me is because we couldn't pay at table. And it was just a teeny bit pricey.

Pros: I really liked the food and the prices. My friends and I had a few beers and the waiting staff made sure we were all having a good time. Cons: We had a little too much attention from the waiting staff.

My family eats at the Rock Road location several times a month. We have also visited the West side, Old Town, and El Dorado locations on occasion. The reviews about the smell are very accurate. The Rock Rd. location is particularly smelly. The salsa is quite good, though mild. You can ask for a hotter sauce and they are happy to oblige. I highly recommend the chicken-based dishes. The ground beef is not great, but other than that we love the food. The service is excellent - very attentive waitstaff, the food is great and it's reasonably cheap for a family of five - especially if you order off of the lunch menu, which you can do after lunch for a one dollar surcharge. You can pay at the table. If you ask the server, they will be glad to take care of you. The norm is to pay at the door, but it's not required. This is one of our favorite places to eat a casual, inexpensive meal.

Delicious, and a super-quick lunch. I'll be back for sure. The parking sucks though. Good luck finding a spot.

Been here just once for a work lunch, and didn't like my enchiladas. But it seems to be really popular among the folks working in downtown.

They have really great food and conveniently located in Old Town. The drinks are pretty cheap too and they don't skimp on their margarita's. The only bad thing is that they close their kitchen early but stay open to serve drinks till 2 so unless you know, it could be kinda confusing. Oh, it's 9 during the week and 10 on the weekends. Overall it's a nice place to start a night on drinking in Old Town.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
