Great menu (they have an extensive menu beyond sushi). Atmosphere is inviting. Nice wine list.

Hana gets props for having legit Japanese sushi AND veritable Korean dishes on one menu. Fried Calamari: if you're expecting tempura, you'll probably be disappointed. Fried? Yes. Tempura? No. Delicious? It's crispy like Chili's chicken fingers...but it's squid...which makes it better. Seaweed Salad: slightly sweet...slightly salty...real sesame seeds on top...nicely seasoned with rice wine vinegar. Nigiri: yo...this sounds weird, but the seared albacore is really, really, really good. The sear looks more like a quick boil on either side, but the fish is as tender and moist as any of its raw cousins. The salmon sashimi is buttery, smooth, and full of that wonderful salmon flavor. This is what the "sushi high" is made of.

Terrible service on a Saturday night at 8pm. Do not go here if they are busy, as they are understaffed. 20 minutes for a beer, 25 minutes for an app. Waitress was overwhelmed and we had the worst service I can remember, bad enough to log into Yelp to leave this review. And cold tempura sucks. We would of sent it back but we never saw our server for 15 minutes after the kitchen helper dropped it off. The comped us 1 round of beers, but that didnt make up for how bad the experience was. I don't blame the waitress, I blame the management for understaffing the bar and kitchen and overstating the waitress. There are better staffed sushi places nearby. I advise you to keep looking.

Service was great here, so the only things that deserved the 2 stars were the Korean food. I just discovered that there are two sides, literally, at Hana Cafe. Two different kitchens in the same place. One side is Japanese/Korean and other side is Korean. The authentic Korean side has odd hours so you really don't know when their schedule is.. So wish it was opened today. We sat on the other side which was open. I ordered the Bi Bim Bap and it wasn't in a stone bowl pot :( Tasteless and tried the sushi instead.. The Hot Dragon roll which was excellent! Please go for the sushi on this side instead. Quality is much better than Wasabi restaurant. I'll try the other side next time!

I love coming here! They're always really quick, polite and the sushi is awesome! I took my friend who's never really had sushi and he ended up liking it a lot and asked to go again shortly after! Try it, you wont be disappointed. The atmosphere is nice quiet and dim so perfect for a date :)

I liked most of the things I have ordered here, and the service is great- but the sushi needs help. Four alarm, sos, drowning, halp! Perhaps the owners can bankroll a trip for the sushi guys to tour the world and get a sense of how it's done in other places, maybe take lessons from sushi masters. It would give them deeper perspectives and a sense of a larger world, a bigger life. Sushi craft is a way of life, unlike slapping things on a blimpie. So yeah, send them on a sushi education trip. That might improve things.

My boyfriend, a friend of ours, and I stopped in here for a quick bite one Sunday afternoon. We initially chose this location over others in the square because the Hana Next Door sounded great and quick. Time was a definite factor as we had just under an hour to eat and get to where we needed to be for a film festival about five minutes away. Hana Next Door was closed but we decided to step into the real thing. It was not very busy but it was 2:30 so kind of an awkward time to eat and we were happy about that. We hoped that would make it a little faster. The food was all tasty, though portions could have been more ample given the price. We spent nearly $40 before tip and were hungry three hours later. Yes, it is 'Asian' food and you can make the joke that you'll be hungry after but for that price, we could have eaten less refined 'Asian' food for a lot less and stayed full just as long if not longer. The food was all tasty and we were pleased with the flavor of the sauces and marinades, the quality of the meat and veggies, and soup/salad starters but this may not be the best place when you have a few people who need to eat in a hurry. I see this more as a business lunch or a place to sit with friends/family and relax more so than a pop in for a quick bite. The service was not very fast especially given their lack of customers but the servers were friendly and answered any questions we had so points for that.

I was in town visiting and saw good reviews for this place. I went for lunch and I have to say the prices and plate portions are very good. However I knew going to a land locked place for sushi I should be cautious. The quality while it was edible was nothing I will be going back for. The fish did not smell but the quality is not up to par with most places I have been . If you are going more for just normal rolls and a decent sized lunch you may want to try but don't expect amazing food, just ok food.

Great customer service and good sushi for the price, however, the quality wasn't the best in the area (hence the 3 stars). It's located in the heart of old town, so it will definitely be my go to spot when I'm looking for a quick bite to eat in old town. Very nice interior too with lots of seating. I think they'd definitely be a 5 star place if they improved their quality of sushi.

So far, this is the best sushi we've had in Wichita. We visited Wasabi, which was pretty good, but we were much more impressed with the service, ambiance, and quality of Hana's food. We came in late on a weekday night-close to closing, and our server was genuine and helpful (even when we were the only ones in the restaurant)! Our favorite item of the night was the yellowtail with garlic and citrus.

As I wandered into Wichita, I wondered, "Where am I going to get my Azn food?" A day before I was going to go into Azn food withdrawal, a co-worker brought me here. =) I was saved! So Hana Cafe is owned by a Korean lady and has both Korean and Japanese cuisine. I got the Chirashi and was very happy. The sashimi is sliced on the thinly, but still reasonable. Also, the bowl and presentation is just adorable. It's a sweet little place to come with friends. The booths make it so that you can still hear the person in front of you, so its not too loud but definitely not on the quiet side.

Staying in downtown Wichita with no car on a Sunday makes it very hard to find somewhere to eat dinner. About half of the restaurants are closed. After sitting in the Rain Cafe for 10 minutes with no service, I left and walked to Old Town's Hana Cafe. I should know better than to order Korean in a non Korean joint, but frankly I was hungry and impatient. Had the bibimbop. The egg was scrambled, the beef cut into very tough and thick strips, the rice cool and the veggie selection limited. It came with a very small dish of gochujang. The waitress forgot to bring me the offered miso soup. When it did arrive, it was slightly bitter. I had to ask for kimchee. No banchan came with the bibimbap. A large dish of kimchee was brought, the bottled stuff and slightly bitter as well. And here's the kicker....they charged me $4.95 for the kimchee! Really indifferent food, and to have to pay $22 for bibimbap and a beer, and to have to pay additional for a side of kimchee is outrageous. Not coming back. Where's the good Korean? Not in Wichita unfortunately.

Excellent sushi. Reasonable prices. The place used to be a "hole in the wall" similar to a small dive restaurant. They've expanded and the atmosphere is nicer but the quality and price ate great for Old Town.

My original-review was such a bad cop-out that I've committed myself multiple times to revisiting Hana Cafe to give them something a little more appropriate. But then after eating there a second time, I again put it off and forgot what I ate before coming around to writing the review again. THEN, the third time seemed to stick, because here I am writing, you reading, and already this is probably longer than my original review. Here we go. No one really speaks highly of Hana Cafe when listing their favorite Old Town restaurants, but there's several things to keep in mind - they've been around for fifteen years, starting on Rock Road before moving to Old Town Square about six years ago, and they were among the first to be serving sushi in the ICT. They're also only one of two independently owned restaurants in the Square that aren't owned by Melad Stephan. Despite this, their location has done them well, and since my original review they substantially remodeled their restaurant, expanding into nearby spaces, adding a sake bar, and a significant amount of polish that was missing from the slim strip mall interior that used to plague them. Though they made a name for themselves using sushi, and though it's not featured very prominently on the menu, Hana Cafe is foremost a Korean restaurant. It doesn't detract from their ample sushi menu (quality's on par with the better sushi places in the city, though not necessarily with the same creativity), but the typical meal for me on a visit to Hana involves starting with a couple pieces of nigiri before moving on to the Korean dishes, and what better Korean dish is there than bibimbop? There's a handful of different versions featuring beef, chicken, or tofu, though I would warn you that the vegetarian bibimbop doesn't come with that runny egg that ties everything together. Otherwise, it's a very nice rendition of the dish from one of the only Korean restaurants in town, though it still doesn't compare to the stone bowls at Mana Wok. Add one of their bottles of saki to the meal and you have an Asian restaurant that's doesn't reach the highs of some other sushi or Korean restaurants in town, but it's more than adequate for the droves of Wichita tourists that visit frequently.

*Last minute addendum: I was about to submit my 3 star rating when one of the waiters blew his schnoz in the dining area....loud & looked at it. Then he went behind the counter and back to work without washing his hands. SICK! FAIL!* ORIGINAL REVIEW PRE-BOOGER FEST: This is a pretty convenient place if you are staying in Old Town. The decor is modern meets traditional Korean. The service at the sushi bar was prompt and adequate for this solo diner. The Prosecco was seved in a cheap and bulky glass which got on my nerves and it was too cold, but bubbly..so that's good. The menu is pretty plain, but thats fine with me. I dint need to have the latest Toro needs watermelon creation every time....although it is one of my favorite non traditional concoctions...thanks Uchi of Austin The portions are pretty generous. The fish was fresh and melty delicious. The rice was passable, but not quality. It was too chewy and too fat. I think a previous Yelper explained the problem well. I would order sashimi if I were to do it again. The way, I look at it, I was in the mood for sushi and it was available and overall pretty good to fulfill the fix.

3-11-14 was looking for Korean food specifically bulgogi and decided to get the diner order. Bad choice the bulgogi was dry and not close to authentic. I have been to numerous Korean restaurants around the country and lived in Korea and this was the worst I have ate at. The restaurant didn't serve any sides with the meal other the. Rice and soup or salad. All Korean restaurants I have been to serve traditional korean side dishes with the meal. For the price of the meal you got poor prepared, dry meat with no sides. Wouldn't go there again. The service was great and the employees were polite.

Hana is my favorite place in Wichita to get sushi. It's as authentic as you can get in a state that doesn't touch any major bodies of water. The edamame is excellent as is the shrimp tempura roll, the spicy salmon roll and the unagi. Great quiet place to get sushi and relax!

Hana sushi is the best sushi Wichita has to offer. Great ambiance and menu. Good mix of Korean and Japanese. The bi bim bap and the spider roll is off the hook...

Did I say I wasn't a huge fan of sushi? Ha, I guess that's changed since February (trips to the two coasts will do that, I guess). Plus, I LOVE wasabi! Really, it's one of my favorite condiments. I had sushi here tonight, the spicy tuna shrimp tempura roll, which I split with my friend. We each got four pieces, which was enough for this evening because we'd both had big lunches earlier. The roll was good, just about as good as any other place I've had sushi. I appreciated how quickly the food came out too. Also, I'll swear by their miso soup. It's some of the best I've had anywhere, and I'll get a craving for it at any given time. They always bring that out right when you order it, and it's so yummy! We came in at about 6:15 on a Friday evening, and the place wasn't packed, but was pretty busy nonetheless. The service was good, they didn't try to rush us, but kept an eye on us whenever we needed anything.

If this is the best of Wichita, I am worried. I ordered various sushi rolls and I am sorry, a lot was left to be desired. Guess I was spoiled by my old sushi diner in COS. The rolls just melted in one's mouth. I am being honest, Dillon's store bought sushi is better. Just ok.

I ordered 2 Korean dishes and it was horrible. It wasn't any where close to authentic. Everything is over price. The sushi was mediocre.

Hana Cafe is probably my most favorite restaurant in Wichita food-wise. Service-wise... not so much. The Bi Bim Bo (I think that's the right combination of short B-words) dish is fantastic and the sushi is the best I've tasted in Wichita. I make it a point to try something different every time I go, and I everything that I've tried is delcious. I usually never have a problem getting a table, however, the service is hit-or-miss. I have been able to get my meal withing ten minutes of ordering but on my most recent trip, I finally got my lunch at 12:50... I had to bring it back to the office to eat it. No fun. If you have some time to kill in Old Town or a lot of conversating to do, I would recommend Hana just because you may be there for awhile. The food can be worth the wait.

Prices were good, I don't think I saw a roll over $10...buttttt the rolls are small, very small. Standard generic roll selection, nothing particularly stand-out on the menu. Very average sushi joint in a strip mall setting.

Best sushi in Wichita. The Baked Scallop California Roll (BSCR) is the best & so unique. I order lunch from here regularly & the Bi Bim Bap is fresh and amazing! Great service-- so glad they are in Old Town.

I used to patronize Cafe Hana's old location on Rock Road for a few years but over time stopped going because the experience was not that special. The sushi was decent, but nothing spectacular and they lacked interesting/creative rolls that I have come to look forward to at most sushi joints. Further the sushi chef/owner is not exactly the friendly type that you often find at Japanese restaurants, so sitting at the sushi bar was not exactly much fun either. This combined with very limited sake options pretty much sealed the deal for me. When I saw they moved to a new location in Old Town I made a mental note to give them another shot, thinking that the new digs might result in a better experience. It took a while but I finally made it there last Friday. The initial impression was promising. The new location can best be described as upscale, modern, and trendy. Overall it felt fitting for Old Town. They were doing solid business on a Friday night, but we were able to get the last open table at 7PM. What started off as promising quickly eroded as the night went on. Our server was friendly but over the lengthy time we waited for our sushi order to arrive she was a bit inattentive. The big problem seems to be that the restaurant is just too large to have a single sushi chef with a small sushi prep area. The orders were stacked deep and it took a very long time for our order to come. There was assistant making some roles on a temporary table behind the main chef, but this seems like a poor solution for a newly designed restaurant. The new design also now eliminates seating at the sushi bar, which I guess suits the owner who probably did not like people sitting watching him anyway since he is not a people person. He was looking as serious and surly as I remember. When the sushi finally did arrive it was good, but the tuna could have been better. The range of interesting rolls has not changed much and they still have a limited sake selection. Overall the new location and trendy environment does not erase the lengthy wait for our food. I'm not expecting this to ever be a killer sushi experience that it should be. On a weeknight I assume that things would go quicker, but I like places where I feel welcome, and I'm not sure this place will ever fit the bill.

I love Hana! My girlfriends and I love to go for sushi dates here. The sushi is always fresh and their other food is very good as well. The service is always good; though depending on how busy it is, it can take a while to get sushi. I like the simple rolls (spicy tuna roll, etc) here the best.

One of the better sushi places I have found in Wichita. I enjoyed the casual atmosphere and found it just quaint enough for an intimate luncheon with a friend. I liked the fact the serving staff didn't hover. Everything felt and tasted so good I really wanted to linger longer, but the booths aren't made for long term comfort. I wish they had big leather chairs like Cafe Moderne so I could get some green tea and linger over my sushi in comfort.

I love the sushi here. Although not better than Kwan Court in my opinion, it's very close. One unique thing I can find there is the seaweed salad (exceptional flavor) and the green tea ice cream. Great place for lunch or dinner!

Loved it! The lunch menu was rather small though. They brought a sheet full of all the sushi we could order so I think that made up for it. I got one of the bento boxes with smoked salmon. It was delicious! Our waitress was really nice and made sure our teas stayed full. Overall a good experience!

According to my Japanese friends, this is the most authentic Japanese food in the area. I went to a college that had a teacher in Japan recruit students to attend school at my alma mater each year. Later on in life, my wife became the international adviser at that college. We've had good interaction with the Japanese students. The Hana Cafe is their choice to go to when they're in Wichita. According to them, Hana is a little Americanized, but has the most authentic Japanese food that they could find in Kansas. I would recommend the Hana Cafe to anyone who is looking for good Japanese food.

Love this place. Great food, good service, portion sizes are reasonable --- not too huge. The ambiance is really nice and it's always very clean. Very modern inside. Love the bi bim bap, ramen and yakisoba. Their egg rolls aren't on the lunch menu but they have never had a problem making them for us. The egg rolls are crunchy but small. Sushi is good here. I enjoy their simple rolls -- they're small but you really get the flavor of the seaweed and fish. I wish their sushi were bigger. As it stands that's really my only complaint -- sushi, edamame and miso is huger here than other places. This is a nice date night spot especially if you're going to catch a movie at the Warren afterwards. Quick lunch service as well.

Fresh Yummy and Fast! Whether you take a seat at the bar or have a group Hana's is always happy to serve. I love me som Spicy Tuna and I always order some variation of a California Roll. Prices are very reasonable, there is a bar and you can sit and watch the fountains and people in Old Town Square. If you are new to sushi I always say start with the basics and explore from there. California Roll is is a makizushi, a kind of sushi roll, which just means it's usually made inside-out, containing cucumber, crab meat or imitation crab, and avocado. When I eat at Hana it's a must because they have so many variation on this classic and It's one of the best I've ever had. So below are a few recommendations I enjoy. Want something a little different? Try the Dragon Roll, it's amazing! It's a California Roll with Avocado & Eel. Like Shrimp? Try the Tiger Roll. California Roll topped with a Shrimp. Oh so good. Scallops your thing? Try the BSCR, California Roll topped with a perfect Scallop. Love the Lox? Try the Alaskan Roll. It's a California Roll with Salmon and Avocado. Or the Washington Roll which is California Roll with Salmon. Lastly, I love their Spicy Tuna. (I know I said that already but I really really love it) I order it every time! Great atmosphere, phenomenal staff, and beautiful decor along with the menu make Hana's the perfect place alone for lunch, dinner with your main squeeze, or in a group. Hana is fantastic!

First impression of walking into this restaurant, a lil bar like sushi restaurant, the staff stood there behind the bar gathered... chit chatting while we waited at the door to be seated... not the best impression for good customer service... Since this was our second stop in our sushi adventure, we had the Ocean Fire and Dynamite Roll The Ocha (Green Tea) at this location had a good color, at least it was GREEN compared to Kanai, but it had a hint of barley tea mixture taste in it, a bit of sourness it seems like... it was interesting, but certainly not green tea at all... The two rolls had one HUGE FLAW.... the rice was KOREAN rice, without Japanese rice wine, which is uh one of the main ingredients in making sushi rice, and the same rough hard texture, it seems like the rice wasn't done in the morning, but a day or so before, hence it tasted a bit refrigerated and cold, besides having the raw fish on the rolls, it really just reminded me of a Korean Sushi roll, its without Japanese rice wine, and a lot more subtle and plain.... The fish eh.... not super fresh but not the type that would make me throw up right away either.... the server was quiet nice but the food gave me a stomachache afterwards... hence its not a place i'll be going back to...

I had high expectations for Hana but was disappointed. We ordered the tempura and teriyaki chicken. The salad was a handful of iceberg lettuce and teriyaki sauce dumped on it. The same technique was used in preparation of the chicken and vegetables since they were also swimming in sauce. At $16+ per dish you can find better teriyaki for less in smaller joints around Wichita. I had wanted the Korean Bi Bam Bop but the waitress reported that it was not prepared traditionally (with little side dishes) so I opted out. On the positive side, the interior decor is very modern and interesting. The miso soup was authentic and tasty.

Mediocre sushi for cheap. Their lunch specials; including Binto boxes, range from about $7 to $10. Between 3-5pm M-F they have 1/2 priced sushi Happy Hour specials. They also offer cooked Korean dishes. I've been told their bi bim bap is terrible, however I personally have not tried it. I've enjoyed several of their rolls, & the spicy salmon maki is probably my favorite. I do not like their tuna. Which is unfortunate, because that is my favorite. The tuna is minced, not a cut of tuna like you'd find in a roll at say Sakura. I'd place Hana's sushi one step above Dillions sushi (grocery store). So no, it's certainly not th best in town, but it's acceptable, open late, cheap, & a few doors down from the Warren. (You get what you pay for) Parking outside the restaurant is limited so you'll probably have to park in the parking garage. It's a decent alternative to other restaurants nearby.

You might be thinking...sushi? In Kansas? As a west coast girl, I was certainly thinking that. But I spent much of the past year in Wichita for work and visited this spot numerous times when I needed a change from bar food. It's in a convenient spot in Old Town, home of many hotels, restaurants and bars and where I typically stay on business. Not only have I tried sushi rolls here, I tried sashimi! Living on the edge. And surprisingly, it was pretty decent. My rolls are always huge and the sashimi fresh enough and sliced very thin. Delicious miso soup. Prices are a steal compared to Seattle. The service is very attentive even though this place is usually slammed at lunch. I prefer this over most all other spots in Old Town.

Best sushi in Wichita. The Baked Scallop California Roll (BSCR) is the best & so unique. I order lunch from here regularly & the Bi Bim Bap is fresh and amazing! Great service-- so glad they are in Old Town.

Hana sushi is the best sushi Wichita has to offer. Great ambiance and menu. Good mix of Korean and Japanese. The bi bim bap and the spider roll is off the hook...

  • Regina F.
