I'd heard of freebird only from a few people , I had no Idea of what to expect. When I walked in I was immediately greeted by the awesome furnishings and good music, I stepped into the line and began to go over the menu, I was impressed. Although the menu and line positioning could cause severe neck damage I figured I would try the steak freebird. The employee who helped me was wonderful nice and informative . I was amazed with the options I could add for free and they seemed endless , the burrito was wrapped nicely and the cashier was friendly. I also ordered one of their house margaritas , which was pretty fairly priced! I got to my table and began to unwrap the massive burrito, I took a bite and was amazed at the quality of the steak, tender and flavorful, what a great surprise. The margarita was really sweet and it's offered with a few different salts, I talked to the manager and told him that I was thoroughly impressed and he recommended a few things I should try. What a great place!

Good alternative to Chipotle. Comparatively speaking, Freebirds has more burrito sizes and a much larger selection of tortilla shells, meats to choose from and goodies to stuff your burrito with. It can be a bit overwhelming and irritating. Irritating because the way the line moves. If you have somewhere to be or on a timed lunch break, Freebirds is NOT the place to go if they have any sort of a line. It takes FOREVER to get through the line. I was standing in line for 25 minutes (literally - I timed it) before I was able to start building my burrito. From walking in to the time I sat down to enjoy my lunch 32 minutes. Not good. Freebirds needs to revise their system and use Chipotle's slide it down the line system. Awesome atmosphere and the rewards points system is a real plus. With the rewards, you can get a free burrito in no time!

I hate to compare Freebirds to Chipotle but they really are quite similar. Personally I really enjoy having more options, some people find it overwhelming. I'd say my favorite thing about Freebirds is their rewards card. Anytime I get a bonus for going somewhere frequently I'll be likely to visit more often. Sorry, I'm just a sucker for free things. After buying 10 burritos, you get a free one! Pretty typical rewards system but it's just another reason why I choose Freebirds over Chipotle. I also really like their "bad ass BBQ sauce" as well. Most people wouldn't think to put BBQ sauce on a burrito but it's delicious! Fast service, one person fills your order from start to finish. Reasonably priced, good portions, quality ingredients. Plus their guac is killer!

Just had another great burrito bowl. Love the Spanish rice and great meat selection. The grilled veggies are super flavorful and so is the corn salsa. Friendly smiles and great food! Made my day that much more delicious. The restaurant was clean as always and the sweet tea was just what I was looking for to cool me off. Can't wait to come back!

Went there shortly after it opened here in WIchita. To me, this place was hardly a step above a Taco Bell. I realize fast food is fast food, but with this level and quality of food I would expect there to be a drive through. Cheaper quality of food than Chipotle, but hey.. you can order much larger portions, so that's a plus.. right?! If you like your Taco Bell in a "Hip" environment and want to pay more money for it, Go to Freebirds.

Decent place to get a quick bite to eat, but if you're expecting a Chipotle-esc burrito you'll be disappointed. It's no Chipotle, but there is a difference in price, choices, and portion sizes, in other words... lots more food and choices but just not as good.

Well I was jealous to see others posting their 4square and FB checkins for this new chain popping up in newsfeeds. Now I can say I am no longer worried about this fad. Freebirds definitely has a lot more choices to choose from compared to Chipotle (wax cheese anybody?), but I think Chipotle outshines them in quality vs. quantity and overall taste. Let me explain why. When you walk in, you have to strain your neck to see example sized foil burritos on the wall. I wasn't prepared for this and you are immediately stopped to determine which of the four ridiculously sized burritos you want to pick from. That immediately triggers an alarm of well how good can this be if we are making clown sized food portions here? I asked for chicken freebird, which is the next size up from their "small" burrito. Imagine a large cylindrical sized candle. Going through the motions of the line was getting tedious from the already bursting burrito. I turned down over half of them. By the time the burrito is ready for assembly, it actually looks like a burst piece of sausage. I mean c'mon the queso wax cheese might be more of an offering than Chipotle, but why eat that stuff? I asked for mild pico de gallo and shredded cheeses. At this point, the burrito is an unmanageable double foil wrapped mess so why not just order a large nacho plate? As for taste, the burrito was just a mouthful of generalized hot. I didn't even go out of my way to request spicy hot ingredients. It was just a mouthful of heat and spice and couldnt taste anything else. (I like spicy but this was just overpowering). Chicken was dry grilled shards of chicken fiber. I'm just not sure that Freebirds method of charred chicken trumps the offering from Chipotle. Long B has it right, "excessively eccentric". The style reminded me Qdoba Mexican Grill burritos which have all the appearance of a great tasting burrito but also fall flat. I'm sure Freebirds will continue to have it's fan base but I'm retreating back to Chipotle. :-/

Just tried Freebirds for the first time today. Love, love, love it. It is so much better than Chipotle!!! The steak was very flavorful, the chips were fresh and there was a plethora of things to choose from. Most importantly they do not overpower everything with cilantro like Chipotle does. I am not a fan of cilantro so it was nice to have options that did not have any. I will be going back soon!

I've come back a few times since my first review. The staff is consistently friendly and helpful. I love the salsa and I prefer their burritos to the one across the street. Music is still a little loud, but it's not annoyingly loud. Definitely would recommend.

Loved our experience! Manager and staff were so friendly. The food was great. I love the variety of ingredients and appreciated the "FREE - dom" Freebirds encourages it's customers to take when building their burritos. I like Chipotle, but don't ask for anything extra without a "look" (let alone a SMILE) while at Freebirds they encourage you to HAVE IT YOUR WAY. I can't wait for Freebirds to come to the east side.

The food is ok, the service is horrible. The flow from the counter to the register is not good. If you have more than one person in your group and have 3 people taking your order its a cluster at best. Watch the service people closely, they don't change their gloves after picking up stuff from the floor.

Vs. Chipotle Pros: more stuff to add, better at wrapping burritos, the name, different flavored/sized tortillas, more entree choices, they have queso & "pot brownies" Cons: tortillas stick to your teeth, bland, salsa choices, sour cream cost extra & quality of meat Give it a shot! To each his own but I choose chipotle!

Great burrito with many options and they come in several sizes. I got the monster and it was no joke. Got 2 meals out of it. The only thing I wish was that the temp of the burrito was hotter. The cayenne tortilla was excellent.

Good stuff; much better than the other burrito joint down the street and sooo many more options! Make sure you save room for a "Pot Brownie!"

I liked this better than chipotle. The burrito had better overall flavor. I loved all the different topping choices. My only gripe is the location, the parking kinda sucks at the strip mall, and they didn't have room for a real patio.

I strongly dislike cilantro, and when I expressed this upfront to the person assembling my rice bowl they were super helpful in avoiding it. If they weren't sure if a given item contained cilantro they double-checked with someone else instead of just guessing, which tbh I would've done. Also, when I asked for avocado on it I received an entire avocado, not just a couple slivers. That was super cool.

Since living in Kansas for the past few years, I've lost touch with other build your own burrito joints other than Chipotle. I remember trying Freebirds in Lubbock, TX, but I always compared it with a smaller chain, Sharky's in Amarillo, TX and I always left disappointed. That being said, it's been a few years and Freebirds has shot up in the ranks. It's a nice change from Chipotle, although the changes aren't always for the best. (Also, please forgive me for comparing to Chipotle - it's hard not to, and for Wichitans, it's all we've got.) I love all the options. Normally too many menu items overwhelm me, but since many of these items can all be wrapped up in a burrito, I don't mind. The only drawback is picking the wrong ingredient and messing up an entire burrito. I also love that there is queso, but the seasoning in it throws me off a bit. I think it's chili powder? Don't ask me - I can't identify flavors to save my life - but it does have a different, smokier taste than other Mexican restaurant queso. Either way, I like that it can be added to your order. The last time we went, we ordered a side order of chips and queso (not the "add to your meal" option) and we got a HUGE bag of chips. We ran out of queso first, but it was still plenty of queso for a normal serving of chips. We also used the online ordering. The ordering part was great - we had the option of paying at the store rather than submitting credit card info online. It was also nice to pick all of our options quickly without waiting in line. The only issue was the wait time once arriving at the store. The website gave me a time to pick it up, and we were about 5-10 minutes late. I ended up waiting another 5-10 minutes to receive my order once getting into the store. I realize this is a new store, and it was early on a Friday evening so I'm sure they were busy, but maybe adjusting the pick up time on the website would be helpful. The staff here have been super friendly and helpful while ordering. They look like they are having fun, and it makes for an even better experience for customers. Overall, I am a fan and will be returning!

Best way to describe Freebirds in one word would be eccentric. From the outside, you don't expect much. Windows are tinted dark and it has a unknown feeling. Walking into Freebirds is very stimulating. There are large printed pictures on the walls, a huge lady liberty breaking through a wall of "Freedom" in a motorcycle, and a huge "Peace" American flag across the wall. It's got that hippy feel good vibe to the place. Only gripe I have is the line setup, which will frequently block the entrance during busy lunch hours. So expect that. Along the line towards the line will be the menu starting at the top of the ceiling towards the bottom. There are a lot of options, which can be very confusing to the customer. I would just recommend the "freebird" sized burrito, especially if you're coming back to work, you don't want to be in a complete food coma. It's the right amount of food that will fill you up nicely. The price is very comparative to Chipolte. They start at 5.99 and go up towards 10 dollars if you want the super sized burrito. There are about 4-5 different types of tortillas you can choose from, and about 20+ different things you can add to it. They also have tacos and food bowls if you want to go that route as well. I just choose the flour burritto with chicken, grilled veggies, black beans, mild sauce, shredded cheddar cheese, and onions. The wrapped their burritos a lot better and give you double the foil to prevent your burrito from spilling every where. Drinks they have a bunch of different bottled alcoholic to non-alcoholic and fountain drinks. Freebird burrito and drink came out to 8.50 which is a bit pricey for a lunch but expected. If you get the rewards card, your second visit you get a free drink. So that's something to look forward to. Now for the part of the review, the taste. The grilled veggies were seasoned well and was very flavorful. The cheese actually was melted inside which gave it a gooey cheesy flavor. The rice was a bit too soft which came out mushy. The chicken was completely lost with all the other toppings that you couldn't even taste it. They cut them to be I would say too small cube sized, and should be a bit bigger. So Chipolte wins in that arena. I would say they both (Freebirds/Chipolte) are similar but are two completely different things in what they offer. Freebirds gives you a lot of ways to customize your food, but can be overwhelming. Chipolte is simple, but could use a bit more variety. Chipolte majority of the flavoring goes into their meat, while Freebirds relies on their umpteen choices of toppings to cover that spectrum. The only thing I didn't care for was the way they put together your food. I think it would work quicker if they did a line where they pass the food over, instead of having 1 person handling all the responsibility. It makes personable, but it seems hectic when you have 10 people running around you. Perhaps in a few months they will have it down since it's a new restaurant and a new system. Plus it was soo loud that I could barely hear or talk to my server.

Although the food was OK the service and prices were terrible. I ordered nachos with chips on the side when I got to the cashier she said 12.95 I mentioned that wasn't the price on the menu she said it was a meal because I had the chips on the side and there was an up-charge since they put guacamole on it, which also wasn't listed as an additional charge. So this was my last visit to freebirds on hillside.

Quality ingredients, fun staff, good atmosphere. A few more options than Chipotle so that's nice :)

I'll try any place that is serving large burritos I can stuff my face with. I had heard so-so reviews of Freebirds but I thought I would give it a shot. First impressions aren't bad, right off that bat you can tell this place is really trying to be different. "Oh, you thought you were just walking into a carbon copy of Chipotle, didn't you? Well you are wrong, we have alternative music playing really loud for no real reason. You hear it, right? We're different. Oh and the graffiti on the wall. Pretty cool, huh." -- Freebirds marketing people. Anyway, so yeah, Freebirds has more chocies to build your burrito, which a cool until you sink your teeth into the burrito you just got done building. Then comes the disappointment. This doesn't really taste like.....anything. I didn't think it was possible to make burritos bland. But you did it, Freebirds, congrats. Seriously, my burrito tasted like cilantro because that was the only ingredient I added that actually HAD flavor. I also had white rice, white chicken (they separate the white and the dark meat. What is this? Thanksgiving?), grilled veggies, pico, spicy salsa, and cilantro. By the way, when you put your salsas in colored bottles where you cant actually see what the salsa looks like, you have already given up. So yeah, this place isn't very good, stick with Chipotle.

Even though they have a few more choices than chipotle...they are all pretty bland and the servings of the toppings were very small, even the extras that you have to pay for. If there was a chance that chipotle was worried about competition, they need not be. I promise to never cheat on chipotle again!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
