I came back to Cortez after hearing that their food wasn't as good as it used to be. When I lived in Wichita, this was my go to place for great Mexican food. When you get your chips, ask the waitress for Ranchero sauce... it's so much better than the typical salsa. My favorite dish is the Tom's Special (chicken), it has fajita chicken, peppers, onions, and beans topped with a chile verde and cheese. I pair it with the rice (it comes with either rice or beans) that goes great with the chile verde and cheese. It was just as great as I remembered. I couldn't believe that they weren't very busy on a Saturday night. If you're on the north side of Wichita looking for a good meal, do yourself a favor and try the Tom's Special at Cortez. I'm a hefty guy, and the small size is plenty of food for me.

Friendly, attentive service. Very low-cost menu. If authentic means not the popular Tex-Mex fare, then it is authentic. That also means that there is not a lot of flavor. If authentic means made in a scratch kitchen, then it is not authentic. Too many items were clearly out of a can or out of a box. There is a new menu that is cluttered, confusing, repetitious. We did not go on a Wednesday night so the buffet was closed. Considering the out-of-can/box quality of the food, the buffet will never be a consideration. Recommend? Meh. Would I go back? Maybe, if my mood was right.

Dinner here tonight w/ family. Excellent! We had their 'Crispitos', chicken & cheese wrapped in a tortilla, fried, and topped with sour cream or guacamole. Both were nice & crisp without being over-fried at all. Our guest had the 'Ted's Plate', and enjoyed it as well. Service was a bit slow, but not bad. Very friendly.

My wife and I ate supper here last night. Although it was a Friday night we had no problem getting seated. The food was served fast and the service was good. My wife had the Mexican Combo Dinner #1 and I had the Beef Entomatadas. Both were very flavorful. My wife also had a side order of Guacamole. She said it is some of the best in Wichita.

This place has an awesome authentic Mexican food buffet! I believe it is on Wednesday's and Saturday's. If you are going to check out Cortez, make a point to go when they have the buffet. There is a large room for seating. They must turn it in to a dance floor in the evening or use it for special occasions.

this is a wonderful authentic family owned mexican restaurant. my family and i frequent it often and have never had to wait for a table due to the large capacity for occupants... waitresses are always very friendly and food is served in large portions - which is a bonus for the reasonable prices of the menu items. buffet is also very good with a wide array of food to choose from. can't go wrong with cortez if you enjoy mexican food.

Hmm, this looks odd.... Half a taco? .... Half a taco! Yeah. That happened. My combination dinner included a taco. Said taco was laid against a burrito. This camouflaged the fact that half of the shell was missing. Im not really sure if I got the "ta" or the "co" part. Did it go M.I.A. in transport? Was the cook trying to trick me into thinking this is what a taco looks like? Who knows really, I didnt complain to my waitress but instead accepted the challenge of trying to eat my taco half, which is now basically a fully loaded Nacho. Most everything else was alright, except for the Cortez House Special Drink. Holy Moley, talk about limey. Im still waiting to enjoy a good meal at Cortez and this just hasnt happened yet. Either lower your prices a couple bucks or up the quality a few notches. Or go find the other part of my taco. Gracias

Despite what some other reviews have stated, this food is NOT authentic. I had the buffet on a Saturday and I found the quality of the food very low. I don't expect very much from any buffet, but this was a total disappointment. The best thing I ate was the rice. There are plenty of better and more authentic spots to get good Mexican food around this area.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
