Hands down the best restaurant in Wichita. Servers are knowledgable and efficient without being intrusive. Nabil is a great chef and has perfected his menu (which doesn't change - my only complaint). The wine list is excellent and affordable - specialty drinks are a delight. The atmosphere is elegant without being stuffy. I always have trouble deciding between steak (the best in town - and yes I've eaten at all the upscale restaurants) shrimp ravioli, or perfectly cooked salmon. My British friends rave about the lamb shank. Most recent dinner included an excellent starter of Baba Ghanouj with a French martini, a Ceaser salad, entrees of Shrimp ravioli and Steak Apoivre with an excellent bottle of red wine topped off with delicious Baklava. A wonderful evening of quiet conversation, un rushed dining in a great downtown location. Several years ago we hosted a business Christmas dinner party for about 30 folks in the restaurant's bar - best party we've ever hosted, Before I retired, it was a favorite place to take business clients - always excellent food and service, quiet enough to talk, classy enough to impress.

My wife and I went to Cafe Bel Ami for our 10th anniversary. The restaurant was quiet and intimate, and the decor was appropriate. The rolls before dinner were nothing to get excited about (in fact I'm pretty sure they're the exact same ones I served years ago at a restaurant in Lawrence). We started with the Halloumi Cheese, which I found quite tasty. My wife didn't like the spongy texture. For dinner, I ordered the "A La Nabil Shrimp and Chicken" and my wife the "Fattouch Salad with Grilled Chicken". We both enjoyed our meals immensely. I liked mine so much, in fact, that I was 3/4 of the way through it before I realized I'd been brought the wrong dish! I was eating the Seafood Melange. It was a happy mistake overall. Besides the mix-up on the entree, the service was very good. The waiter stayed out of the way, but was always there when needed.

Every facet of this gem was excellent. The food was amazing. The server was polite and attentive. The environment was quaint and decorative. We got our food extremely fast! I have no complaints about this restaurant. I left feeling ecstatic.

Went there for an anniversary dinner. I ordered the steak chaussuer with fattouch salad and hummus for an appetizer. It was the best meal I've had all year. It may be my favorite place in Wichita

I'm new to the Wichita area and, after receiving a recommendation from a colleague at work to try Cafe Bel Ami, I keep returning. In fact, I've eaten dinner at Bel Ami 4 times in the past month and each visit was a very good experience. It's very quiet and a great place to have a quiet meal alone or to enjoy a peaceful meal with clients or friends. Friendly service from knowledgeable staff with a good selection of imported (and domestic) beers with a pretty decent wine list. The value-for-price is very good. I've eaten the fattoush salad with feta cheese a couple of times (so I obviously like it). During my first visit, the shrimp ravioli caught my eye, since it was quite unique, and I enjoyed it. The following 3 times, I ordered steak (with different sauces/spices), and each time they were delicious and properly cooked (medium rare). I'm still waiting for an opportunity to order their lamb shank, because I was told by another patron it was delicious. The portion is very large, however, so I'm waiting until I can bring my wife or a friend. If there's any negatives, I'd say it's a little difficult to find and the parking lot behind the restaurant is somewhat confusing - with reserved signs for the law offices and other businesses that share the building on most of the parking spaces (which I assume is during weekdays during business hours?). Alternatively, there is curbside parking on the street at the front of the restaurant with parking meters - but I haven't yet taken the time to check if it's free after certain weekday hours and/or on weekends.

What a wonderful little cafe hidden in the heart of downtown Wichita! My wife and I went last Friday for dinner before a concert at Century II. We got there right at 5:00 when they opened for the evening. We were the only diners in the place. As good as the food and service was I can't believe there wasn't a line around the corner, especially on a Friday night. But it was early... We both ordered the Bel Ami Grilled Chicken. Soup and salad are available but not included in the price of the meal. That being said it really didn't matter because the portion size was perfect. Just enough to fill you up without feeling stuffed or having to ask for a to go box. The grilled chicken breasts were seasoned just right with a herb, garlic red sauce. Served with roasted red potatoes and a steamed vegetable medley. The waiter checked on us often and kept our glasses full. (Granted we WERE the only people in the place that didn't work there). The prices are reasonable for fine dining. I am sure we will keep it on our list of places to go for a special occasion.

Great food, service and ambience. We had dinner there for the first time before an event at Intrust arena and thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Excellent! Glad I found this gem. The service was great, the atmosphere perfect, the food was exactly what I wanted.

Cafe Bel Ami seems like a restaurant that's a casualty of its age. Located Downtown - and that's Downtown proper, not Old Town - if you can find this place amongst all of the old office buildings, you might find yourself taken back twenty years to where your parents might have considered celebrating a special occasion. You can see this in the attempt at establishing an unwritten dress code (only partially successfully, as at least one pair of flip flops were spotted), the full service waiters of only the fanciest orders, and dim lighting that would have been romantic had I been there with someone special. My night began with a couple glasses of a serviceable Rosemount Estate Shiraz and a reminder as to why I shouldn't look up the price of a bottle of wine while I'm drinking a glass of it in a restaurant. Things improved with a fried halloumi cheese appetizer, which I chose largely because I've never heard of it before. The high melting point means it's good for frying, as it was here, placed alongside some tomatoes and crostinis atop a heaping bed of spinach. That big pile of spinach threw me a little bit, and after diving into it, this appetizer could have easily made a serviceable pre-dinner salad, had I not misunderstood the waiter's asking if I wanted an actual pre-dinner salad as an implication that one came with the entree, as it definitely does not. Like a hyperbolic 90% of restaurants in Wichita, Bel Ami claims Mediterranean influences and proves it with a hummus appetizer and, yes, a fattoush salad. And like many others, it's little more than a garden salad with pita chips. My problems with Bel Ami are with the menu, largely comprised of chicken, steaks, and au poivres that are really just peppercorn sauces. There are some oddballs, like a shrimp ravioli, a New Orleans-style chicken dish, and liver and onions, though none of those really fit very well within the theme of the restaurant. There was a braised lamb shank, too, which I probably should have had, but I instead went with a Filet Rossini, a filet topped with a truffle pate, mushrooms, and a red wine sauce. I certainly have no qualms with the taste, it was cooked well, and mushrooms, red wine, and red meats go together like Gangbusters, so I certainly enjoyed it. I don't think I'll be coming back though. Bel Ami is very similar to Larkspur, though with a more upscale atmosphere and a gearing to the older comforts of fine dining that cater to an older clientèle. When I pay for fine dining I expect creativity, uniqueness, and the personality of the chef to come along with some great food. Bel Ami is serving the old standards, which is fine for many and what has probably kept them in business when there are no significant full service restaurants for blocks in any direction. It's perhaps one of the most upscale restaurants in the city.

Just ate a deliciously flavorful lunch here. The ambiance is amazing. It was the most under-priced meal I've ever had--I highly recommend Cafe Bel Ami.

Cafe Bel Ami is nestled in the Downtown area of Wichita, and caters to the business crowd. There is little in the way of French cuisine in Wichita, and Cafe Bel Ami covers a large part of that. Lunches are very reasonable here, and the sandwiches are tasty, with generous portions. The dinner menu is a little pricier, but not unreasonable (I'm looking at you, Chester's Chophouse), and has some options not found on the lunch menu. My wife ordered the lamb shank, and I have had the Beef Hunter (before it was removed from the dinner menu). The lamb is tender and tasty, with just enough seasoning. The Beef hunter was over rice, with tender beef tips and onions in lemon cream sauce. The lemon cream was nice, not as heavy as a stroganoff sauce and played off the flavor of the medium rare beef tips wonderfully. The decor reminds me of a 19th century dinner club you would see in a Dickens novel. striped wallpaper and lamps on the walls, and patterned carpet. I felt like I should have worn a suit and tie for dinner, but nobody complained. The service was attentive and had a thorough knowledge of everything on the menu, making ordering easy. All in all, I like Cafe Bel Ami and will be going back. The only real negative I can think of is the cramped parking in that area of downtown, which is of course no fault of Bel Ami at all.

I will not go to Café Bel Ami again because of their poor business practice and inept parking lot attendants.

The steak was superb. ALWAYS manage to get to Bel Ami every time we get to Wichita.

For our anniversary my fiance was taking me out to dinner, usually I have to pick the restaurant because I'm somewhat fickeled with food :) I believe that would be...picky. So he told me he had reservations and when I asked where he said Applebees hehe...funny. We are on a tight budget so extravagant meals are non-existant. Anyways on to the review. We landed up here, at Cafe Bel Ami. It is a mediterannean and French mix giving it an upscale grandieur being in an old hotel downtown. It's not a chain which I LOVE! Wichita is all CHAINS and the few local places are few and rare but delicious! He ordered the KC Strip Demonica with a Diablo sauce on it. Which came with red potatoes and amazing roasted veggies like red pepper, snap pees and onion. His steak was tender, juicy, and fresh with an tantilizing aroma from the sauce it was cooked in. I ordered the shrimp and chicken au poivre, with a red pepper cream sauce (which i had on the side) it also came with the veggies which i ate up first, 2 flat chicken breasts and 3 large sized shrimp (not salad sized) and a large pile of Rice Pilaf. It was amazing. The waitor was busy, but in that autmosphere you want to take your time. Unlike the traditional French, we did not get a small bread basket. That was no biggie because the portions were generous for such an upscale restaurant. The wine list was likewise impressive, although I did not get to try any. Great original date idea, married or dating! Even a business dinner (which one was going on) is ideal for a place like this! We spent under $50 for both of our meals, and i had a fattouch salad to begin with. I want to come back to try their babaghanouj sometime as well....maybe lunch :)

This little restaurant is tucked away downtown. Parking was a little bit of a problem for us, but I think that was kind of unusual. The food was good, not especially innovative, but quality nonetheless, and for the price! That was the big surprise. Most entrees are under 10$ The decor is pretty old-fashioned, but it kind of fits with the whole business lunch thing. I wouldn't hesitate to take a client here, but wouldn't really get much out of it with my family. Our service was REALLY slow, and we didn't try the desserts but they looked great too. Altogether, definitely a step above a too-expensive chain restaurant, but not somewhere I'm really dying to go back to either.
