Between the Salvadorian pupusas, the Puerto Rican mofongo, and the Mexican caldo de marisco, there was a variety of influences in the kitchen of Antojitos Salvadoreno. Even the name is a bit of an amalgamation: Anotojitos is the street food of Mexico (literally "little cravings"), and you can guess what Saladoreno means. Wherever the influence, the food is prepared with great care, even if that comes with extended wait times as a result. Ordering a pupusa or two to keep you occupied while the two ladies in the kitchen trade off being both cooks and servers. The fluffy and not-greasy pupusas filled with cheese and meat are as good as any of the scant few South American restaurants that drift through Wichita every year or two, especially with copious amounts of the pickled cabbage slaw that's marinating in a large jar at every table. The slaw is pretty good on everything, and it served as a nice ad hoc salad to the otherwise extremely hearty mofongo: mashed plantains, rice, and chicharones make for a very heavy dish without something to brighten it up. The wooden pestle serves as a miniaturized version of the preparation dish as well as a striking presentation piece, and topped with a couple of garish fried slices of the starch it's a signature dish of the restaurant. The caldo de mariscos, soup chocked full of every conceivable piece of seafood, is a dish that hinges on the quality of the protein, and the restaurant doesn't skimp here, either, with an entire crab floating among the menagerie of clams, shrimp, and fish. Despite all of the different animals, nothing seemed to be overcooked. Antojitos Salvadoreno is located in one of the worst parts of Central in a poorly-maintained parking lot adjacent to a liquor store. It's hole-in-the-wall appeal, combined with the care they take in making some of the only Salvadorian food in town, makes for a unique and tasty dining experience.

It's wonderful to have two options for Salvadoran food here in Wichita. Price wise, I think it's similar/cheaper than Usuluteco. It's been awhile since I've been, but for $1.75/ pupusa here, you're not going to break the bank. Food is comparable with much the same offerings. Aside from the pupusas, I got the beef soup, and hubs got the chile relleno. Both portions were large and well made and around $10 each. For just a bit more, I could've upgraded to the seafood. It's all very reasonable and satisfying eats if you're craving it. I think my friends ordered the bandeja salvadoreano (sp?)...and that thing was a BEAST ($20ish and well worth it). Definitely meant to be shared. If you're a true carnivore, you're going to want to order this. Nothing wrong with Usuluteco, but since Antojito is so much easier for us to get to (right off 135 and Central), this is going to be my go to place for Salvadoran food.

This is a tiny little restaurant in East Wichita. Before entering, I found the colorful blue, yellow, and white mural on the front very cute and inviting. The layout inside is a bit chaotic and the restaurant is quite small. The menu occasionally uses a Spanish word in the translation, so it helps to know a little Spanish or to go for the more obvious choices. Staff is very friendly and comes by to see how you like your meal. The food is amazing. Everything is seasoned so well. Very tasty (and not at all hot if you think seasoning=spicy). Definitely try the refried beans. And how many restaurants serve platanos? The fried chicken was about the best I had eaten. Perhaps I hit them on a really good day, but I cannot imagine better. The plates are huge and if you are not a big eater, one plate serves two (or makes for a nice take-home meal.) Everything is made fresh, so this means it is good, but that you will wait a long time between ordering and eating. If you do accidentally arrive hungry, order some pupusas to snack on. Strongly recommend that anyone who likes Latin food, try Antojitos Salvadoreno.

My adult son and I wanted something different so we looked online and Antojitos was our choice. So glad we did!! We both had a variety of papusa's and they were wonderful!! We also had fried plantains. YUM! The restaurant seemed clean and the waitress was smiling and so very helpful. She answered all of our questions (speaks Spanish and English) and made sure we were well taken care of. I can't wait to go back when my hubby is in town so he can enjoy it too!! This is definitely a place worth visiting. The price was extremely reasonable which is always a plus in my book.
