Although I proclaimed a modern Italian revolution for this city several years ago, almost all of those restaurants have withered and died. One of them was in this very building, and while its successor may not have the same passion for Italian cooking as the previous tenant, it makes up for it with the shrewd business acumen of a man who's been managing Bela Lunas for a decade. No review of this restaurant can go without speaking to the Italian nachos, so here goes: the fried wanton skins covered with alfredo sauce, tomatoes, banana peppers, and a heaping mound of dressed lettuce serve as an impressive display, and certainly deserves points for creativity, though this suffers from the same technical limitations of the traditional Tex-Mex dish in its difficulty of getting everything in one bite. It almost worked better as a salad when I left the chips out of it, though I'd be lying if I didn't say the plate was still mostly consumed by the time it was taken away. Like at Bela Luna, the menu is chocked full of things that read technically well, but don't inspire excitement. I spent too long wavering on what should consist of my dinner, and even now looking at the menu I'm filled with ennui. The only standout is the gramigna, if only because I have never heard of it. It proved to be a red herring: in Italian cuisine, gramigna is a type of irregular-shaped tubular pasta that is often served with a cream sauce. Here, it's a dish of pork tenderloin served with spaghetti in a white wine, caper, and roasted garlic sauce. Both the pork and the noodles were a little overcooked, though it erred on the right side of good enough. The ambivalence continued with the spaghetti with meatballs. The traditional Italian-American dish shared similarly overcooked and over-sauced noodles, but to Albero's credit they at least managed to toss the pasta in the sauce before serving it. The red sauce was freshly made, but too acidic, and the meatballs could have done with some browning before they went for a swim in the sauce. I'm not sure if Grandma would approve of using Italian sausage in a meatball recipe, but I'm willing to let it slide. In what strikes me as a cost-saving measure, my pasta was topped with both the long pieces and finely grated versions of Parmesan. I assume one of those was a little more expensive than the other. The complementary freeze and bake bread is absolutely terrible. On paper, there's a lot to like at Albero Cafe - prices are good, service is cordial, and there's clearly an effort to present modern Italian cooking, even if it's done in such straightforward manner as to inspire ambivalence. The menu is much more focused than Bela Luna, and in many respects the recipes are written with more tact than some other Italian restaurants, but the capabilities of the kitchen leave the execution a little lacking.

Tonight was our first dining and was met with good service, clean accommodations and a Pastrami sandwich I would drive across town to enjoy. Fresh made chips to top off the experience. Our table was visited by the chef as he did with all tables. Nice job, we will be back.

Today was my second visit to Albero. I am honestly not sure how to describe my experience, so I'll do my best to do this place some justice but it will surely be lacking. Let me start with the service. My first visit was on a prom weekend, so the restaurant was quite busy. Despite this, the wait staff managed to clear a table quickly and have my wife and I seated in under five minutes. The server was polite, made insightful recommendations when we had questions, and was always prompt with his service. This second visit was only better due to the fact that there was no wait. The dining itself is another story. I normally take a tiny but of pride in having a broad palate and I try to order something new any time I make a repeat visit to an establishment. I had to make an exception this time, and ordered exactly the same thing that I did the first time. To start, the bartender is on point. I had the Lemon Gin Collins; it had enough limoncello to cut the bite of the gin but not too much to overpower the botanicals that round it out. The pastrami sandwich on rye, which I ordered both visits, was flat-out the best I have ever had. The pastrami was sliced thin (as it should be!) and and was so soft that it melts in your mouth. I simply can't say enough, this is hands down my new favorite in Wichita. If you haven't been to this place you need to make it a priority.

Quick and effective service. Had the Bruchetta, light. Tomatoes were a bit big cut. Wife had the chicken parmesan. She was very pleased, said she would order again. Very rich sauce. I ordered the spaghetti Bolognese. If the sauce for this would have had the same depth as the parmesan I would have thoroughly enjoyed it. It seemed to be quite watered down as if the pasta was not drained enough before adding to the sauce. Bread would have been a nice accompaniment. German chocolate cake was nice and rich. Will return again to try the pork Cutlet and the ice ball appetizer.

not what I would call economical but overall very good. Only issues I had were of a nit picky nature and would only make me sound like a whiner. Pasta was perfectly cooked, portion reasonable, and the Cesar salad was very good with lots of cheese. a piece of decent bread to soak up the sauce would have been a welcome addition. my plate was loaded with meat to which I was pleasantly suprising and I will defiantly be returning even if I have to take my own bread !!!

We eat at Albero once a week. My current favorites are the Hungry Jeff sandwich, the Italian Chop Salad, the Antipasto, the Aranconi, and, of course, the addictive Italian Nachos. Hassan and his staff make the dining experience extraordinary. Great food. Modest and inviting ambiance. Very reasonable prices for the quality and quantity. Staff is delighted to divide orders in half to accommodate smaller appetites. Go before 6 or after 7:30 to linger a little.

Contemporary and relaxed Italian restaurant near College Hill. The server was friendly and guided me to a good choice (grilled chicken sandwich). The sandwich was great, but some of the chips were stale, despite being billed as made in house. Their prices are at a higher price point versus my average lunch places. I think it would be good if they offered lunch specials to drum up more business. I'll visit again. I've only been once so I want to try it a few more times before I say much more. I hope they succeed.

We have been to Albero's several times since it's opening last year and I feel bad that I've never rated it until now. We went again last night and, as always, it's awesome. L-O-V-E Ronnie, he's da man! He makes all his customers feel like VIP's. In the many times we've been to dinner, we have tried things all over the menu. The classic Italian fare is always great, but their other menu items have never disappointed. I got a Hungry Jeff sandwich for the first time and I am in love. I got it with the pasta salad side and liked it just as much. The midweek crowd is very diverse from young families to older couples or friends having a dinner out. It's a very friendly, casual atmosphere.

Great food from appetizer to dessert. The arancini are big and served with plenty of very good sauce. Ask for bread to sop it up with. It's too good to waste. Between us, we had: Fish Parmesan, Chicken Parmesan, Graminga, and Italian Sausage Penne. Everyone loved their meals, and everyone includes a couple of us who spent considerable portions of our lives in Rome. The servings are plentiful. More food than you think at first glance. The flavors and textures are spot on. Both the Tiramisu and Lemon Cake were excellent. Reasonable prices and well worth the money. Excellent.

If you are looking for a great new place, this is the best new restaurant in Wichita. It is Mediterranean style and the flavors are just right. The menu has pasta dishes, sandwiches, flatbreads, grilled fish, and several others. Every dish I have tried has been excellent. My fiancé is gluten intolerant and gluten free pasta is available and is quite good tasting. Medium pricing and worth it. Range of wines and mixed drinks. Service is usually good, but can be spotty at times. The owner is present and makes certain you'll have a great dining experience.

I really really wanted to like this place, and unfortunately did not. I was so excited but let down once I realized how much of the food was frozen or bagged or preservatives. Italian nachos- good, but wouldn't go back and order them again. Fried wonton dough covered in bland alfredo sauce, lettuce, banana peppers, and tomatoes. I really liked the bites with tomatoes but there weren't enough. Wish the chips were more like pita chips and not wonton. Alfredo sauce kind of tastes like pepper gravy with some nacho cheese added. House salad- tons of bagged lettuce, and incredibly spicy dressing that literally made you sweat and gave you no warning, tomatoes, olives, and banana peppers. It desperately needed something sweet and something crunchy. Preferably candied pecans and maybe some feta cheese. Also, the bowls were so full of lettuce I was getting tired of having to pick up lettuce that was dropping with every bite. Give me a bigger bowl please! Next time I am definitely trying the arugula salad. Bread- they delivered it with the entrees which made no sense, I definitely could have used it with the salad. You can tell it's the frozen variety and they brought little packets of butter. Would have preferred some olive oil or at least butter in a ramekin. Fettuccine formaggio- bland bland bland sauce, boxed noodles. The only thing I enjoyed was the tang from shaved Parmesan on top but even that didn't taste very fresh. I barely ate any of this. Also they topped it with the powdered Parmesan as well which confused me. I should have tried something with a red sauce. Chicken lemon orzo soup- first of all, we ordered the white bean soup and they brought us the wrong one but ah well. I swear it tastes exactly like a can of Campbell's. The orzo was mushy, the pieces of chicken tasted like canned chicken, and the broth and soup itself just tasted like chicken broth that hadn't really fully gotten it's flavor yet. Absolutely no lemon tasted in the soup. One saving grace**** the BURGER Burger d'Albero- SO GOOD, will definitely be back to just get this at the very least. The bun was toasted and the bread was actually of good quality, the carmelized onions were perfect in a balsamic reduction and the Gorgonzola and mayo concoction balanced out the burger perfectly. The meat was cooked medium rare and it was delicious and juicy. The chefs weren't so hot at Italian but amazing at this burger which made me think that they must have been line cooks at some point. Ambience was nice, booths were comfortable and lighting was just right and the oldies they played went well with the mood. I had a whiskey sour called albero lemonade and it was strong and lacked sour, but with all that alcohol it was probably worth the 7 dollars. They said they had a special were import beers were only 3 dollars but still charged us 4. All of this cost us about 58 dollars including tip. Not bad for an app, two salads, two entrees, side of soup, and drinks. But was just very disappointed with the majority. The service was adequate and they did time the delivery of everything nicely. It was also nice that they boxed up leftovers for us and put them in a little bag. (I'm gonna try to spice up that alfredo sauce myself tomorrow.) I will be back to try more things and that burger eventually, but I was extremely let down.

Solid as an Oak - True to its Motif Superb food! Cocktails: Red sangria: refreshing berry-like. Negroni: perfectly blended bitterness. Shrimp Dip: Generous - really generous! - portion. Velvety sauce nicely enhanced with the addition of the prosciutto. Arugula Salad: Nice acidity to the red pepper vinaigrette, pears and gorgonzola always match nicely. Wine Selection (availability depleted) so the selection had to be changed from the Bolla Pinot Grigio to the Fontina Frascati - still a perfect pairing with the entrees. Fettuccini Formaggio: Rich, rich, rich. I want more! Chicken Milano: A replay of the Formaggio with tidbits of sun-dried tomato and, of course, the chicken. Scrumptious! Dessert: Declined the tiramisu upon learning it was "shipped in" and not made in house. Seating was immediate despite not having a reservation. Mr. Ballout was a very gracious host. Service was attentive. A small con: Timing the delivery of the food to the table was disastrous. Everything came within a four to eight minutes span. We had barely started savoring the appetizer when the salad arrived immediately followed by the entrees. Consequently, we felt rushed. This food is worth lingering over, so to have it all in front of you at the same time was a bit of a shortcoming to the overall experience. Would that stop me from returning? Absolutely not! I'm chalking up the timing of the food delivery simply to growing pains. Date of Visit: 02Aug2014

Must have the Italian nachos. Fried won-tons with that amazing white cheese you look for in every store but can't find. Topped with a Mediterranean dressing mix of lettuce, pepperoncinis, and tomatoes. Everyone will swear by this one. Although they offer it with meat add on as an option, save your money to add the meat to your entree because adding it to the nachos will take away from the intended flavor If you aren't sure about them, check out the local Kansas magazine in Dillons. They have a 20% off total bill there that will entice you to try them out. Me and my wife got the Italian nachos this last time and split a Carbonara and left with a bill less than $30. I wouldn't recommend bring kids because it isn't a very roomy establishment. On a Saturday there is barely enough room to wait for a seat to be open. This is a good and bad thing. Good because you know the food is good. Bad because if you bring kids they will most likely get agitated by the wait. I'm still not 100% sold on all of their entrees but I will say the Carbonara is delicious. Last time I had an item with a tomato sauce that tasted like Prego's sauce. So some of the items seem thrown together but either way you should check this place out. If you are thinking Olive Garden then I would recommend this over that.

Charming little cafe. Good service, very attentive and knowledgable waiter. Food was served promptly. I ordered a shrimp pasta dish. It was flavorful and the portion was adequate for lunch. I was disappointed that the meal did not come with a salad or bread. This place also has 20% off coupons in local advertisements

Group of four of us visited about a week after they opened. Fun atmosphere in a former restaurant we also enjoyed - Boccancini. Albero's owner/manager cut came from Bella Luna - East Central location. Husain is a people person, yet a bit shy! His appetizers, food and wine along with excellent service was just what we needed. Pricing was reasonable - nothing negative to say. Our table was a bit small for 4 of us, but he fixed that without hesitation. We are all foodies and talked about how fun it would be to be in the business with someone that has his work ethic and presentation skills. Try it out, you cannot possible be disappointed. Taking a client there nest week and I'm already hungry! Kudos to Albero's - visit often Yelpers!

Food was great! It is a little loud and the service could be a little better. We got our appetizers before our food order was taken, we didn't get bread until after we were almost done eating and we never received butter/evoo to go with the bread.

Glad to have a place on the east side with an amazing Italian menu. Be careful: the Med nachos are absolutely ADDICTIVE! Definitely have friends with you to try them. The sandwiches are perfect for lunch (especially the Hungry Jeff if you're a meat lover). The arugula salad is well dobe and even filling on its own. And the portions are always perfect. Staff is always attentive without hovering, and the owner/manager obviously cares because he comes from the kitchen to check on every diner.

Had dinner with friends Friday night. Food was good. Spaghetti Boulogne was tasty. Graminga with the lemon caper sauce and chicken was as well. Salads were fresh but didn't come out much before the meal. That may have been because the fresh baked (still warm) bread wasn't finished yet. (Just my guess). Service was adequate. Waiter was polite and attentive without hovering. We arrived at 5:30.The place filled up in a hurry, with people waiting everywhere they could. It's a real small place. This is a very good addition to the neighborhood. Give it a try. You will be pleased.

I went with my husband for lunch and ordered the Carne Flatbread and the Hungry Jeff Panini. The food was delicious!!!! Their prices are very reasonable, we were even impressed that they gave us a military discount without even asking for it (my husband was in his uniform). Great environment, great service and everyone from the staff was very friendly. Definitely, will be back!!!!

Great authetic food! My new favorite place for Italian in town. I loved Boccocini and was sad to see them go, but Albero is a great replacement. They did an outstanding job refinishing the interior. The service was very fast and the food was delicious. Riedel wine glasses are always a nice touch. We went on a Saturday night and they had live music. We will definitely go back.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
