It's kind of a hole in the wall type of joint, but it's a Topeka staple! Cheap prices and good food - I love the ham burrito! Retro vibe to the space - looks like it probably hasn't been updated since the 80s. But that kind of adds to its hole in the wall charm. Their Facebook updates are always hilarious which just makes me love this place even more.

BRING CASH! They only accept cash! I've been going here my whole life, and if you want cheap, quick, no frills ameri-mexican, this is your place. Make sure you get a tostada!

I think just about anyone who grew up In Topeka has got a favorite order at Tortilla Jacks. Cheap and delicious for anyone who isn't too snobby, the beef is delicious and the hot sauce is wonderful. I agree with the other reviewers here that is is kind of ridiculous how fast the kitchen is at preparing all the meals. If you're planning on eating in the restaurant, I'd say check out the light (ligeros) tacos. They're a little more expensive, but taste fantastic and are made with a wonderful soft shell that melts in your mouth. The chips aren't salted (which is a very good thing) and the tostadas, sanchos and burritos are delicious. As someone who isn't particularly fond of 'authentic' Mexican food, this place is great.

Been a favorite place of mine for 25 years. The food is just as good now as it was then. Very good food at affordable prices.

I always forget about Tortilla Jack's because of it location. The seating isn't all the comfortable to me, but the food is good. The taco lite is to die for!

Another Topeka Treasure. Just get the Jack's Burrito Dinner and a large Pepsi. So stinkin' good. I love their crushed ice... dare I say it's better than Sonic's ice.

Cheap and delicious "Mexican" food. The tostadas are excellent carriers for their hot sauce. Every time I go in this place is packed, but the ladies in the kitchen must have food construction down to a science because I never have to wait long for my order.

I *really* enjoy coming here and getting the Jack's Sancho Dinner. While the food that is produced here at Tortilla Jack's may not be "authentic Mexican food"... It's really damn good. I've never gotten a wrong order, the service is always quick and friendly, and the prices are very decent.. You really can't go wrong here!

I'm originally from Topeka, and whenever I come back to visit family and friends, I always crave Tortilla Jacks. I've had bomb mexican food in Los Angeles, but there is something in their burritos and tacos that always brings me back. Have they found the elixir from the fountain of youth and drizzled the special crack sauce on their food? No, definitely not. If you are anywhere out of state that has authentic mexican food, you most likely won't be impressed. But in the annals of Topeka history, I don't think many Mexican restaurants have the avid fan base, great prices (Sunday burrito and taco specials ftw), and underrated crushed ice. I love their burritos, their tortillas are really unique. They are more floury than corny, and they keep it simple by absolutely filling it with delicious ground beef. I always get the Jacks Burrito Dinner... a burrito smothered with cheese, a taco, with tortilla chips, refried beans, salsa, and sour cream on the side. Ask for extra cups of hot sauce on the side and take sips and shots of it while you eat your food. Your mouth will thank you but your bumhole won't.

My niece says this is the best restaurant ever, they have the best burritos. And she has very good taste. "I love love that place. I love it." - Lily age 7.

If you're here from out of town go to Tortilla Jacks. It's a whole in the wall and, anybody from Topeka knows that the tacos here always bring a smile to one's face - AND someone else's face, too. I'll explain both reasons why...You'll see someone you know there every single time and that will make you happy! That's an absolute truth that has never once been disputed since Topeka was founded December 5th, 1854! I always wondered why this place was so good, then one day while eating in the back dining room I found out why....... They were bringing supplies in through the back door and I saw that everything they were bringing in was top quality brand name. NONE of it was bulk restaurant stuff. The bread was Wonder bread, the sauce was Pace Picante, the mints were Star Lite, and even the dish soap was Dawn!!! This shows a commitment to quality in my eyes that likely pervades throughout everything they do. I'm gonna go out on a limb and bet that the ice is Lindy Spring. Give it a try! I think you'll agree. It's also right next to a nice new little area of trendy restaurants. Don't forget to ask for tomatoes and onions :-O~~~. That's the onion breath emoticon.

Attention Taco Tico and Taco Casa: THIS is how it's supposed to be done! Locally owned, great hours, and consistent food. I can't tell you this is my favorite Mexican Food joint in town, but they have a certain appeal - and they're cheap - which is always appealing to me. :) The food is real, the atmosphere comfortable and the service pleasant. And did I mention they are locally owned? Go if you haven't, try it, and keep your dollars in our community!

We tried this place out at the recommendation of our Washburn student. The place was very clean and cheery. You order at the counter and pick up at the counter. Plastic plates and silverware. Food was OK. Honestly, it tasted like something you'd get at the High School Booster food booth. We won't be back.

It's just cheap forgettable slop. The woman at the counter greeted me nicely but thats it. The place didn't look very clean, the place looked cheap and the food a tad overpriced for what I got. They had my food ready 30 seconds after I ordered it and it was lukewarm. This place makes Taco Bell seem refined in comparison. I know that sounds harsh but at least my local Taco Bell is clean,(at least as could be expected) and you pay for what you get. This place just did nothing for me. If you want cheap local mexican, go to Taco Villa or Tacos El Sol.

Tortilla Jacks has a good following, and for special deals come on Sunday when they have Sanchos ,Burritos, and Tacos on sale. Their specialty is cheap mexican, and they hit the mark. You have your choice of real or liquid cheese on some items. Personally I love the sancho's and tostado's. And they now take credit cards.

Tortilla Jack's gets mad props for being a long-open and locally-owned restaurant in a town with very few of them. They also get respect and love because they were a staple of my childhood and adolescence growing up in Top-City. The Food: If you're looking for LA Taco Truck quality Mexican, this isn't it. But what it IS...is consistently good, yummy, cheap, fast, and hunger-attacking. And they've been making it happen for dozens of years. In a world of chain fast-food, I relish being able to go back to my home town and jump into a locally owned joint like Tortilla Jack's and fill up on cheap tacos while playing Galliga on the vintage game console. I also relish the gravel sized boulders of ice that fill each soda cup to the brim. You don't find that pellet sized ice many places. Long story short...whenever I'm back in Topeka, I have to eat at Tortilla Jack's.

A Mexican restaurant for those who have not had Mexican food. Hot sauce is not hot. Really a ham burrito? My nephew who lives in Tucson says it is debatable if Jack's is better then his school Mexican lunches. A good place for those who want totally American Mid-westernized Mexican. And they have the crushed iced which I do like.

The food isnt the best but it still holds a special place in my heart. I have gone here since I was little. I would say the food ranks between Taco Bell and Pepe and Chila's.

Can't really say why- but people love this place. The taco beef is dry, although the other ingredients are fresh. Make sure you ask for sauce or you will need some water to wet your whistle again

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
