Oh McFarlands. It is safe to say that 99% of the people that eat at McFarlands won't be reading this email. Because I would rather doubt that any of them have heard of online restaurant review - or even possible don't go online each day. Let's just say that if you are in your 50s - you will be the youngest in the restaurant. Having said that, the place is a favorite for the 60-80 year old crowd. This is home comfort food, generally undersalted (to help with all of those blood pressures) and generally pretty tasty. Our table tried the chicken fried chicken, yankee pot roast and the roasted chicken. All three of us were pretty satisfied. The pot roast was tender. The chicken friend steak was a whole breast filet, lightly breaded and fried - giving it more of a breaded chicken breat feeling rather than a "chickden fried chicken" (crunchy, thick, herbed and tasty) feeling. You get dessert with your meal. Some opt for tapioca pudding. I wanted the pie. They said their coconut pie was marvelous. But when I tasted it, it was full of vanila cream, mixed with a few slivers of shaved coconut. The crust was underdone. Adn the topping was the whipped topping in a bag that restaurants can buy. The sides were good. I liked that they made mashed potatoes out small red bliss potatoes. I ordered blue cheese dressing on my side salad. This tasted like a white store botton dressing, with a few crumbles of blue cheese. But not good tasting. The atmosphere is a cross between a Cracker Barrel, and the dining room of a senior center. If my older parents want to return there, i will go with them. But never on my own.

We have been to McFarland's twice. Both times, I wasn't exactly delighted. Last night we took our daughter there as she has raved about it in the past. We decided to get a appetizer, and we got chicken livers. The menu says they are the best chicken livers you will ever eat. They were good. We ordered our entrées, and I thought maybe I would ask for guidance, and I was told lots of folks like their Fried Chicken, but in the waitresses opinion, it was best to get something else. She suggested the Roast Beef. People rave about how tender it is. When the roast beef came, I was really disappointed. It looked like two slices of deli style sandwich meat roast beef. Not roast beef that was slow cooked on premises. I was expecting something that looked like it was carved off a roast, not cut with a deli slicer. Of course it was fork tender, as it was only barely thicker than what we might call thin sliced luncheon meat. I will admit that the sides were good. We had fried okra, and it was nice and crisp. and the baked potato was good. The strawberry pie was vanilla crème pie with strawberries on top. I just can't see paying $55 for dinner for 3 and getting such mediocre food.

I came here since I was told it had home cooking food. From my experience here just go home and cook yourself a meal or admit yourself into a hospital and order some food there. The food wasn't very good and I have to agree I felt like I was in a nursing home, not because there were a lot of elderly people but since the food didn't have any wow factor to it...nothing memorable..blan.

When I was very little, my great aunt would take me with her to McFarland's. I remembered it as a place for the very elderly to go and eat. And because of that I have not been there in years. Recently my coworkers have been talking about how great the food is and how reasonable the prices are. It took some coaxing but I finally talked the hubs into trying it, and by coaxing I mentioned that they are supposed to have a fantastic chicken fried steak. We went two weeks ago and the place looked a little different, and a little similar to how I remembered. Lots of older folks, some people in their 50's and some people in their 30's. I also ran into two people I knew, the place was busy. We were greeted and sat right away. Great service all they way through our visit. I ordered chicken fried chicken and the hubs got the chicken fried steak. The food came out much faster than at a chain restaurant AND everything had a homemade feel. No Sysco food, just real quality food. It was delicious and when were were done we were surprised to find out the meal comes with a dessert! I got a chocolate cake which was delightful and hubs got a Boston cream pie which he said was great. We were so happy with our visit to McFarland's that we invited the hubs parents and grandmother to come back out with us the following week. Once again, great service, fantastic food, and an all around great experience. Mr. McFarland goes around to each table to make sure the customers are happy and all of the wait staff is friendly and attentive. If I could give this place 10 stars I would.

They have a large variety of food, something for everyone. It is moderately priced and the food was all good. Our table got chicken livers (amazingly tender and not greasy), two salads (flavorful and good) and a bowl of soup (also excellent.) we also got the desserts. The tapioca pudding was fluffy and great. The two of us who don't like the texture of tapioca even liked it a lot. The cherry cooler was good but not as good as the pudding. The only thing somewhat lacking is the atmosphere, but that is easily made up for by the quality of the homemade food.

Got seated very quick. Ordered quickly and brought us our potatoe soups. It was good but needed more or some pepper. She brought the prime rib sandwich. It was hot and fresh. After she brought the bread pudding. A good end to a good meal. I have to say the highlight was the service.

One thing that I enjoy about YELP, is the wide variety of opinions that stem from the same establishment. I don't know if it depends on who's cooking from one day to the next, or if the supplies are from different vendors, but I am about to contradict the other reviewers that precede me on this restaurant. My visit warranted some of the same comments that I have read, yes, the major clientele is the retirement set. But when you are like me and want a quiet dining experience...the elderly make perfect co-diners. No yelling, no kids, no blackberrys or having to listen to someone elses cell phone call.. And look at it this way, they are probably living on a fixed income, and frequent where the food is good, and the prices are reasonable. It should be a guide to diners, like truckers....If they eat there it must be good There were several diners though, in their 20's and teens so being 46, I was not the youngest one in there. The decor is simple but very clean and organized. Menu is basic american staples from chicken, meatloaf, roast beef. pork chops. Special tonight was Swiss steak, which I ordered. along with mashed potatoes, green beans, and a homemade tasting dinner roll. Beef was extremely tender and laced with gravy containing onions and peppers. I'll admit I salted it, but would rather add to ;rather than wish you could scrape off on the seasoning department. Green beans contained ham chunks and onions, potatoes were real red potatoes that had been mashed, not instant. Also sampled this evening was an open faced roast beef sandwich. Meat was again tender and delicious. I tried the Portugese soup, which was a broth type soup with brussel sprouts, broccoli, peppers, zucchini. with croutons. It may not be the prettiest soup to look at, but it was surprisingly good. It did have a lot of flavor, and with all those greens, it has to be healthy, right? I will definitely be getting this again or trying to make some here at home. Dessert comes with most meals. We had chocolate cake which was very fresh and moist. Very chocolatey...Tasted like it was bakery fresh. The coconut creme pie, against a previous reviewers opinion was excellent, crust was flakey and home style tasting..the filling was fresh and loaded with coconut and custard-like sweet filing. Topped with a thick real whipped cream, no Dream whip here. The staff was all very attentive, and the owner roams the dining room chatting with patrons, making sure you are satisfied. So chalk me up as a satisfied patron. If this is compared to a rest home dining room..I hope I end up at the right retirement village when its time.
