I've only been here twice, but I think you experience depends on what you order. The first time I ordered a burrito. It wasn't anything special. The second time I had the tacos al pastor and they were amazing! Pork, onions, and pineapple are so good together. Who knew? I also like how you can specify the style you want for the fixings. Lastly, the queso was very good!

I'm sad to report that the food is nothing special at all. Even the much-lauded "monster burrito" was a bit of a dud. Nice enough dining room and staff, but the kitchen fails to inspire.

We hit Lupitas a couple times in the last week, The food was good, and service was great. We came in on a Friday night about a 1/2 hour before closing and then came back on Thursday Night for the monster burritos and $1.25 long necks. For those complaining about bland food, they make it mild, then you can add hot sauce to it. They also have some items that are flat out spicy. Ask your server for a recommendation if you like it spicy. The steak in the Steak burritos and quesadillas is awesome. Tender and tasty. The service is great. You won't find yourself trying to flag someone down for a refill, and they check back often.

I feel like I hear a lot about Lupita's from people who love this spot, so I was really disappointed when I finally stopped in. It's nothing special. Kind of bland Mexican food and I tried several dishes! The staff and service were hospitable and they do a lot to promote the restaurant and downtown which I admire. But I'd rather eat at other places if I want Mexican food.

Downtown Topeka....well, it's not Lawrence. (Sorry Topeka-dwellers, it's just not.) But, I would pit Lupitas against La Parilla and its ilk any day. If you find yourself in downtown Topeka you should certainly stop in. Their spicy salsa will set your lips a tingling. And then there are the tacos. I swear they put crack in them--they're perfectly seasoned and deliciously addictive. Martene, the super nice waiter who's always there at lunchtime, tops the experience off.

Two different burritos. Authentic Mexican style. Terrific. The hot salsa creeps up on you. Not your typical flavors.

I am definitely a fan of Lupitas. Usually go twice a month for lunch. Their salsa is the best around, not like other chains that have spaghetti sauce for your chips. Hot is just right for me, but some days I try their extra hot, watch out for that one! Even though they are hot they still have other flavors to them. On Tuesdays and Thursdays they offer a monster burrito and if it doesn't fill you up I don't know what to tell you. Lastly, the service is amazing. It's a family run place and they take pride in treating their customers well.

I have eaten at Lupitas weekly for years and it is by far my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. The service is excellent in this family owned business. They do get busy so arrive by 11:30-11:45. Order the number 13 Mexican Style! Excellent chorizo soft tacos. If you like hot salsa ask for the "suicide" sauce. Queso by Carol is a great cheese and beef dip if you have room for the calories.

Downtown Topeka at 8th Avenue and S. Kansas Avenue. They've been in business since 1995. The first star for me = they serve coke products, which is always a plus in my book. Second star = because of the long takeout line at lunch time (has to be a good sign!). Menu consists of pretty standard mex restaurant fare, but includes many choices of meat, and entrees that are served Mexican or American style (lettuce, tomato and sour cream). I ordered the 2 enchilada combo (one ground beef, one potato cheese), with a small side of guac (authentic style at Lupita's means with pico). The beans were yummy. Generous amounts of rice and beans. The guac had a good kick with lots of garlic and cilantro, but the avocado wasn't chunky enough. The enchiladas were just so/so, a little too bland. 3rd star is for the super friendly waiter.

I really don't know what the big deal is - but everyone says they love this place. It is always busy at lunch so go early. They have a hot sauce with chips that is really great, the other one is milder and tastes of cilantro. I got the chicken burrito, American style (with lettuce & sour cream). It is so dry, you have to add sauce to get any flavor. Don't waste your time ordering that, unless you are on a diet and into flavorless food.

Love! Love! LOVE!!! This place is awesome! The salsa is the best. I always get the Steak Taco (only serve after lunch) with rice and beans plus you have to have everything smothered with their cheese sauce. YUM! The people there are friendly and funny as well.

Man, I'm usually on par with other yelp reviews for places, not for Lupitas though. Went there for the first time yesterday and really wasn't too pleased and I LOVE Mexican food! All four of us at our table thought the salsa was terrible. Extremely bland and tasted more like ketchup than salsa. The hot salsa was just a hotter version of the bad regular salsa. I was going to buy the really hot stuff, but didn't want to waste the money. I only had a few chips full of salsa, and usually I will down salsa until we leave! We all agreed that the rest of the food followed just how salsa did. Nothing special at all. The service was ok. They were all nice at least. The waiter would refill our drinks and kept mixing up me and my friends drinks. Glad he noticed early on! So ya, unfortunately I will not be going back here unless I'm invited or I get it for free somehow :)

Another boring Mexican restaurant. Box style taco shells. Staff was slow to bring our tickets and reluctant to refill any of our drinks. I don't come to Topeka often but when I come back I'll go somewhere else.

On a cold, snowy day, the food here really hit the spot. I had the chicken soft tacos, and they were fantastic. The service was a little slow, but we caught them right at the end of lunch hour, so it's understandable. Highly recommended.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
