Jose's is awesome! Everything is good here...EVERYTHING! Chips are thin and crispy, the salsa is so yummy and has lots of cilantro in it. Pollo Magnifico (to die for) used to be the only thing I ordered here but I'm glad I've branched out and tried more items because everything I've had is great! Salads, Tacos al Carbon, Chicken Avicado enchiladas, California quesadilla, and Creamy Steak enchiladas are the entree's I order most often. When we have family and friends visit from out of town they now demand we go to Jose's for at least one meal.

I had some business to conduct with an employee here, but they weren't at work when I arrived, so I opted to have lunch. $1.99 margaritas was a good deal. I got hornswaggled into some cheese dip that was $1.99, but the bartender neglected to tell me it was $1.99 only if you purchase an entree. Their menu boasts about the Poco Pollo Magnifico, so I ordered it. #1: the mesa here is very good. The rest of the meal was nothing special. The entree was really dry actually, but since the bartender gets taken away from the bar to put together all the to go orders, I never got checked on and didn't get to voice my opinion about the food, so I just ate it. The manager Joe was nice enough to put my laptop in the office safe. I was dropping it off for repair by the husband of one of the employees. The food and service were mediocre, but the experience and 4-star rating were all in light of the personal touch by the manager on duty, Joe. The $1.99 ritas would bring me in again, but I'd probably just stick to the chips and dip and treat this more like a happy hour place. The bartender (young lady with a widow's peak) was pretty funny. Too bad the kitchen doesn't back it up by delivering amazing food.

Went in, had amazing service & phenomenal fajitas and great jalapeño stuffed peppers. Gringo dip is always great. My son & husband enjoyed the baja burrito

Ok, first of all my family and I have been lovers of this location for a great many years. Over the last couple years the salsa has changed, and the serving sizes have shrunk, but we have stuck with them. The usually time it takes from ordering to having food it's usually at or less than 20 minutes. We always order the same things so there it's no variations there. Went to dinner for my wife's birthday and they were slightly busy when we got there. We didn't wait more than5 minutes. We ordered unsweetened tea, we got sweetened. We the waiter abd he said that it should be unsweetened but he would get us new ones. We ordered our food at the same time. And we waited. 20 minutes later we got new chips. About 20 later someone else brought us more chips. No sign of the waiter. About 25 minutes later more chips and no waiter. We had to find our waiter to see where our food was after a 4th bowl was brought and other people have arrived after us and eaten and were paying for their check. We found him, asked him and we're had our food within 2 minutes. And it was barely warm. The chips were abundant, the service was lacking. Usually live the place but threw off our schedule for the evening totally. I usually live this place but when the customer service is "off" it is way off.

We are regulars and love the food! We take part in their yummy margarita deals. The servers know us by name and the managers always stop and say hi. Waiting for that cool summer night so we can enjoy the patio.

Love JP's - They have great food, great service every time. Try the jumbo stuffed jalapenos - you won't be disappointed. Also, you HAVE to go on Monday or Tuesday for $2 margaritas.

GREAT TIP AT BOTTOM OF REVIEW to cut calories and save money! This is our favorite Mexican restaurant. We have two favorite meals here. The Monterey Chicken Burrito and the Cheese Crisp Salad. The Monterey is a burrito with grilled white meat chicken inside with rice and tomatoes inside. They dump the white cheese spinach espinacha all over the top and my wife is particular and started asking for the cheese sauce on the side so it doesn't make it soggy. I tried it and prefer the cheese sauce on the side now. It also helps save on the calories too. It comes with refried beans and rice, we always get black beans as we like black beans. The second favorite meal is the Cheese Crisp Salad: It is a soft tortilla bowl, they take it sprinkle chess on it, bake it (not fry it) and then add lettuce, black beans spanish rice and a ranch tomatilla dressing. Now the money saving tip and calorie saving tip: Jose Pepper's will let you split any meal in the kitchen for $1!!!! For the dollar you get the main entree halfed and your own serving of rice and beans. Plus the free chips and salsa. THis makes the meal the perfect size, especially for those that are counting calories. They will even split the salads in the kitchen, But if you split the salad ask for it to be put in the bigger bowl as sometimes they will split it and put it in a tiny bowl and it is a mess to toss it in a bowl way to small to contain it's contents. I like the lesser calories. Our whole office orders meals to go and splits in the kitchen and everybody is full. LOVE THE CHEESE CRISP SALAD, LOVE THE MONTEREY CHICKEN BURRITO. LOVE TO SPLIT IN THE KITCHEN, as it makes us not leave so full! This is our favorite Jose Peppers. The crew here is awesome.

The family and I have eaten here a couple times now. A free queso is usually the draw, but the food is good too. I'm a buritto guy - enjoyed the steak burrito at my last visit...service is prompt and good too.

Had the monterrey chicken burrito- so good! I ordered ahead of time and it only took 5 minute Ill eat here again

Loved the service and the Mahi Mahi tacos. It's hard for me to eat chips and dip for an appetizer though-- I'm a salad person. Same with the sides that come with the entree, didn't feel much of an appetite for them.

I have always enjoyed a good plate of food at Jose Pepper's. As my brother once said, when commenting on the no-frills, down-home satisfying type of food which Jose Pepper's embodies -- it's "just good yum". Which is all that needs said - good simple basics done well and tasty. Nothing fancy or "gourmet" here, but this regional chain does what it does and does it well.

Husband and I try to have lunch at Jose's on Blackbob just about every week. We LOVE their food and the wait staff is friendly and efficient. No complaints from us.

We ate there for the first time a couple of nights ago. I'm from Texas and have grown up with great Mexican food and haven't really found any place that has "wowed" me with their Fajitas and Guacamole. We are always a little leery of trying a new place, especially if it's a chain Mexican food place, so we were very impressed from the minute we walked in the door. Staff was very friendly, chips were light, fresh, crispy and tasty. Salsa tasted good, but I am personally not a fan of "chunky" salsa. The guacamole was very good! I ordered the Fajitas Del Trio - felt like I had died and gone to Heaven! The shrimp was to die for, the chicken and beef were tender, but not dry and had a great flavor. The beans were a little on the spicy side (left an after-burn in my throat), but tasty, as was the Cilantro rice. The Montequilla butter was fabulous! My Strawberry Margarita was ok - I didn't think it tasted like strawberry, but it wasn't a deal-breaker. My husband had the Cheese Enchilada plate - he said they were very good, but he did think the chili powder in the sauce was a little on the heavy side. He said he would still order it again, though. We were also impressed with the fact that our first waiter came over and introduced our second waiter and asked if that was ok, since it was a shift change. Most places don't do that, and we did appreciate that. Our first waiter even came over and checked on us. The staff was attentive but not intrusive. We got there after the dinner rush, so there weren't too many people there, which was nice (except for the booth of women behind us that were extremely loud and obnoxious). All in all, a very pleasant and relaxing experience and we will definitely go back and maybe eat outside on their patio!

Jose Pepper's is soooo mediocre. I know people around KC love it, but the few experiences I've had over the years have been "meh". Service has always been good, but the food is not that good. I hadn't been to one in a couple years, but my wife and I went for lunch. I got chicken fajitas with black beans and rice, and she got some baked chicken with a metric ton of cheese on top, also with black beans and rice. My fajitas were okay - they weren't sizzling, which was odd, but were fairly hot. The chicken wasn't great quality, and there were a ton of onions so they must have been cheaper than peppers, of which I was given only a few small slices of. My wife's chicken was somewhat dry and the cheese seemed to overpower everything. Black beans were not great, rice was dry as the Kalahari. As I mentioned, service was good as usual, with drinks constantly refilled. But I'm reminded how mediocre Americanized Mexican food is, and Jose Peppers is one of the more mediocre in the area.

Have been a loyal Customer on average 2 times per week for the last 11 years. Have ordered House Margaritas for both myself and wife with "little ice" every time. Last night (6/23/15) I placed the same request. Bartender Amanda stated "she could not do light ice on $2.00 Margaritas night because we would get more than anyone else in their Glass. Really? We have been getting drinks and food here on special evenings and normal evenings. Being Chastised by that Employee while we sat at the Bar was not well accepted by us or the other couple setting next to us. Known Bill the Manager all through this time.Never ever, ever have we had a problem. This one Employee has change all of it for us. Will never darken their doorway again. Amanda got NO TIP and Jose lost a GOOD CUSTOMER! Side note; They know us well when we sit down at the Bar we are served Margaritas light ice without having to ask.

This is one of our "go to" mexican restaurants. Fast, friendly service, yummy food, and great margaritas. Our young kids love it too! ! We love that there is hand sanitizer on each table and that chips and salsa are brought almost immediately once we are seated. The Corona shrimp tacos are my absolute favorite! !!

The best restaurant salsa I've found anywhere! Excellent chips too! Guacamole and cheese dip are both great starters. I rarely branch away from my staple avocado & chicken enchiladas - they are amazing! Family friendly. Kids love it and get to take home balloons.

I have always had friendly, high quality service here, and have nothing negative to say about any of their food that I've tried! I just had the cheese crisp salad and loved it! First of all, it was huge (which made me happy, as I always love being able to take extras home), and the addition of the feta cheese made it a really nice change from the usual tex-mex salads. Their chips are really light and good to snack on (similar to Chili's) and the salsa has a fresh cilantro flavor. Really enjoyed coming here!

DW and I had dinner here. It was very busy, but we got a table in a reasonable amount of time. DW is kind of picky about her food and I don't know why we bother coming to a Mexican restaurant when she doesn't like onions and peppers, but we did anyway. Long story short the service was awesome and our server & the manager did a great job in making sure we had great food. The food is Americanized Mexican food, but pretty standard of what you find in most Mexican Restaurants. The service here was the best I have seen in a long time and the prices are very reasonable. I will definitely be coming back to Jose Peppers.

I am new in town and on the search for a great Mexican restaurant in the area. Jose Pepper's, unfortunately, was not the answer to my prayers. It is basically what I expected from a chain Mexican restaurant; very Americanized Mexican food and a kind of generic vibe. Our service was pretty slow on the night we went (a Friday I think?) but I have no idea if this is normal or not. I also found that the open floor plan contributed to a really loud atmosphere, but then again, it was the weekend (or close to it) so I guess this didn't surprise me too much. I didn't hate this place, and may even go back again some day, but if you prefer more of an authentic Mexican dining experience than this wouldn't be the place for you.

    (3)
  • Kelsey C.

Same glorious Jose Pepper's food I know and love. I'm obsessed with the cheese crisp salad and the espinaca. The only downfall is when I got a to-go order that included espinaca, they gave me a small bag of chips (about 12 chips total). I had ordered 2 entrees, you would think that they would give me more chips? Otherwise, fast service and everyone is friendly.

For a chain Mexican restaurant, it doesn't get much better than Jose Peppers. I sometimes dine at the one on Midland Drive in Shawnee for lunch, but I eat at the one on Blackbob a lot! First off, I love their chips and salsa. I usually have to ask for more. One of my favorite things to order is the Chicken and Avocado Enchilada. It's baked, which makes it somewhat a healthier choice. I also love the grilled steak soft tacos. On Mondays and Tuesdays, they have $1.99 margaritas. I'm not a huge tequila fan due to a rough night a few years back, so I usually settle with a Dos Equis.

have been eating here for a very long time, since the location on Murlen and Santa Fe. We ate here last week and service was fair and food fair...OK, just thinking an off night. We went again tonight for the special 2 dollar tacos, terrible, no taste whatsoever, extremely greasy. We had couple of each beef and chicken. We each left our chicken, absolutely terrible. We've had this experience before about a year ago, food and service dropped way off. Probably did not go for 8+ months, went in, wonderful experience, food delicious. thinking back on their game. After tonight, I don't think so, won't be going back.

Jose Peppers never disappoints. We went there today for lunch. The espinaca dip is a great appetizer that you should not pass up. The enchilada and taco were tasty. Kids get an ice cream dessert with their meal. Great lunch and will be back soon.

This is the real deal for Mexican food. Salsa delicious chips fresh. Had the tamales and they were perfect. Not to dry and not smothered in "add ons". Place was packed but only waited 10 minutes. Oh yeah the stuffed jalapeños were super!!

    (5)
  • Kevin T.

Terrible Mexican food! I had the chicken diablo tacos (the special of the night) and every bite of chicken had a piece of gristle or fat in it (obviously they were not trimmed very well by the "chefs") The diablo sauce was more like a can of stewed tomatoes and they topped the tacos with about a cup of cheese on each taco (I like cheese but not that much) . The rice was dry and the beans were bland. The only reason I am giving them 2 stars is because our server was the best I have had in a while.

    (2)
  • C L.

Not bad. It's all preference. If I had to eat at a Mexican restaurant similar to this, I prefer Mi Ranchito. But on a friend's request, we stopped here and I didn't want to slit my wrists. Espinaca dip here isn't as good as Mi Ranchito's, says me. But that didn't prevent me from eating my fair share of it. That's all we had on this visit, drinks and dip. The hostess and server were nice.

I love Jose Pepper's! The food that I love is the cheese quesadilla. The chips and salsa are phenomenal. My family loves this place and we go there every year on my birthday. I would go there everyday if I could. I do wish that they would allow you to only eat the chips and salsa but they have to make money somehow. I would recommend the cheese quesadilla. The manager, Joe, is SUPER nice, he always comes up to our table to check on us.

Had dinner at Jose's in Olathe. Food is not bad, but not fantastic for Mexican. But we have been going there for years. The last three times however have been bombs, not because of food but because of attitude of employees. Last night we were seated right by 6 and sometimes 8 drunk girls that did not look old enough to even be served. Screaming and jumping around etc. Manager of the moment, little short pudgy gal refused to say anything to quiet them down. She said the owners policy is to NEVER ask anyone to to calm down, drunk or not. She said that is Bill Ridgeway. The previous time we were there we were seated in the first section in which about 25 people occupied the whole center aisle and everyone -- including servers would rub their ass on our table as they went by. Personally, I do not really care to go back, but probably will. Glutton for punishment I guess. K Macho's is better food, but personalities of employees is odd.

Delicious Mexican Food. They have great favorite Mexican recipes. But they also have great healthy alternatives. You can substitute fruit, side salad, or cottage cheese instead of rice and beans at no extra charge! I love the Cheese Crisp Salad. Huge portions for a low price. The Espinaca Dip is really good. Look for coupons for free espinaca dip in the Valpak coupon mailings. They also have call ahead seating.

I've heard that KC has one of the largest concentrations of Mexican restaurants in the country. Many are great but none beat Jose' Peppers. I'm sure the tacos are good but try something a little less ordinary. Their mexican sauces are incredible. Try the Creamy Chicken Enchalada. I've never heard of anyone that didn't love the Pollo Magnifico. Wow! It's brilliant. UPDATE: 3 or 4 visits over the last six months have me worried. Everything has has slipped a little.

I like the wide open, airy layout. I sat at the bar and was greeted promptly and served chips & salsa. I do agree with most of you on here, the chips and salsa are right on point. I went with the Monterey Chicken Burrito lunch special. The grilled chicken inside of the burrito gave it a depth that most mexican chicken dishes lack. The beans and rice were also very good. Only other thing I can say is I can't wait to go back!

I haven't been here for a longgggg time. Overall our experience was great! I was greeted with a fabulous surprise... $2 house margaritas! You can't beat that! I was buzzing after my first one! We started with the complimentary chips and salsa and orders a half order of guacamole. Not my favorite guac but it satisfied my craving at the moment. The. I ordered the steak enchilada which was pretty delicious. My fiancé ordered the pork chimichanga which he enjoyed as well. Not the most authentic Mexican restaurant but we still enjoy the food. We'll definitely be back!

Believe it or not I recently lost almost 200 pounds and I still got to eat at my favorite place, Jose Peppers. They grilled my food and steamed my broccoli so I could stay on my diet. They also cooked my brunch of eggs wt vegetables. I needed to eat low fat and low carb. Bill is an amazing manager who makes his customers feel special..

Good food for a fair price. If they had not recently raised the price of their margaritas I would have given it a five star rating. Great atmosphere. For a family with kids, it doesn't get better.

Love Jose Peppers for one reason. The Margarita's. I am kinda strange when it comes to how I order my Margarita's I like them no salt, no ice, not frozen. Pretty much just tequila, lime and the margarita mix in my drink. When you order a Margarita like this most places just give you a shorter glass and charge you the same as a big mug. But Jose Peppers gives you the Big Mug and the full amount of this heavenly drink!!!! Love them!!!! The food is good but the drinks are super. I went there on Cinco de Mayo with a co-worker and we each ordered a Margarita with our late lunch, then another Margarita. When we got back to the office we realized about 10 mins later when I couldn't stop giggling, that I drank twice as much as he did. Ended up he had to drive me home and call my husband and explain why he dropped me off and that my car was at the office. This is the best place in town for Margarita's.

The regular chips and cheese is hard to beat. Their chips and salsa is pretty good as well. Salads are well-made and loaded with stuff. The food overall is satisfying, but the temperature of the plates upon service is not only ridiculous, it's dangerous. I think I get the "hot-plate" concept, but plates so hot they could cause burns is just stupid. Surely I'm not the only one that feels this way. For me at least, this takes away from the dining experience.

They have the best chips I've ever had. Light, crispy and tasty! Their chicken tacos are wonderful too. Wish they'd bring one to Utah.

    (5)
  • Steven H.

The crispy ground beef tacos are hard to beat. The beef is cooked, then the beef and the shell is deep fried. Then they add cold lettuce, cheese, tomato. You can get two of these with beans and rice for $7. Also the two for seven margaritas are good and strong.

I sure miss those coupons for free Espinaca Dip at Jose Pepper's. They have great chips and salsa, too. I actually waited tables at one of their locations a few years ago - and this is still one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in town. My favorite dishes: Monterey Chicken Burrito, Chipotle Mushroom Burrito, Pollo Magnifico and Carne Burrito. And just a brief summary of what's special about each... The Monterey is smothered with their famous Espinaca. Mmmm.... The Chipotle Mushroom has a wonderful smoked chile (chipotle) sauce on it. The Magnifico is deep fried with jalapeno cream cheese on the inside. And the Carne has beef and pork, and smothered with queso sauce. Is your mouth watering yet??? They also have margarita drink specials. I think it's 2 for $7, or something close to it. I'm personally not much of a drinker... Check it out!

"OK" food. "OK" margaritas. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, look elsewhere. This is more of a "On the Border" type of restaurant. The inside looks like a sports bar with flat screen TVs everywhere, all muted, most without subtitles. It's very loud inside and they usually have top 40 type music playing over the ceiling speakers. The margaritas are pretty expensive, even though they try to sell the "2 for $7" deal pretty heavy. You basically get a 12 ounce beer mug completely full of ice that is then filled with a pre-mixed margarita from the tap. They taste surprisingly good, though, for a basic sour mix margarita. Not even close to the best I've ever had, but far from the worst. The food tastes pre-made...specifically the burritos. Most plates are just under the $10 range. Again, if you're looking for that chain restaurant type of Mexican food, this is your place. Nothing too authentic about any of their dishes...which doesn't mean they taste bad...just not authentic. My wife and I went here weekly, sometimes twice per week for months when we first moved here. Mainly because it was close to our home. Their chips and salsa are good and their "espinaca" dip is a must. To conclude...it's a good place if you want americanized Mexican style food. If you want some authentic food, go to "Chapala" just west of this place off Clairborne at I-35 and Santa Fe/135th.

This is my favorite mexican restaurant around. The espinaca dip is wonderful. My favorite dish is the pollo magnifico. I have tried many other dishes also and have never been disappointed. The margaritas are wonderful. I love the bright colorful decor. They have call ahead seating, but you never have to wait too long in line. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean. We visit there at least once a month.

I usually go to the Jose at 103rd and Metcalf but stopped here and have found it the same. I love Jose Peppers, excellent chips and salsa the best grilled chicken quesadillas and guacamole and thier Pollo Magnifico is a MUST try, i heap it with salsa, everybody is friendly and takeout is fast. i really like this place more everytime i stop in for the above.

We stopped here for an early dinner one evening. We started with the espinaca dip. It was okay... not spectacular, not awesome, more meh than anything. It was kind of bland. It consisted of queso blanco, spinach, and some kind of flavoring I can't quite put my finger on. The chips and salsa were good, so I pretty much just snacked on those while waiting for our entrees. Our waitress was amazing! She made sure to keep not only us, but my girlfriend's 2-year-old entertained throughout our dining experience. She was bubbly and generally fun to talk to. She was also a great waitress and very attentive to our orders. For dinner, I had the vegetarian fajitas. There really isn't much for a vegetarian to eat here other than a bean burrito or fajitas. The fajitas were surprisingly bland. They definitely could have used a bit of spice, but there was more than enough food to make three meals out of them. Overall, I wasn't very impressed with the quality of Mexican food here, but the service was awesome, so I'm willing to give it another try sometime. They really need to work on their vegetarian options, though!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
