This is an awesome BBQ joint if you are ever out on old 56 hwy in Olathe. The owner is super cool and the place has TVs all over the place so if you wanna catch a game this is the place to do it. I had the beef sandwich with fries and they crossed my eyes. I know it's hard to compete with the many BBQ joints in the area, but you can't go wrong here.

Day 3 of 12 in my KC BBQ review... When the boss man only gives you 1 hour to: get in the car, call home, drive across town, order, eat, enjoy, clean up, back in the car, drive back and get to your desk before the work piles up...accessibility is very important. This joint is easy to get to and they are all about the Lunch Specials. Even if you don't think your current plate represents the best BBQ you have ever stuffed between your gums, there is always tomorrow! With modestly-priced daily specials, Monday-Friday, you can't go wrong. The brisket is sliced thin and ready for a sauced bun for a quick beef sandwich to-go. Wait a few days and add ham to that beef sandwich for the late-week lunch special. Ribs are meaty and large, basted with their smooth sauce. There is plenty of seating and the walls are adorned with every BBQ sauce and rub in the country tempting you to try their warm house or spicy selections with your meal...and if you approve, they are available to-go by the bottle.

My first visit....been looking for good bbq and I just found it. Nice clean and neat place...ample parking. The sides were very good and the sausage and pulled pork were exceptional. The sauce was very much to my liking. Our server, Madison, was friendly and very helpful. Johnnys is so much better than Oklahoma Joes. We'll be back for sure. I even took an order of burned ends home for dinner tomorrow...may not wait that long before I open that box

Who is this Johnny guy whose name is in the all of these less than stellar restaurants. Google it, literally, in the state of Kansas alone, this dude has like 20 plus places. I feel bad for Johnny because none of these places, from Johnny's BBQ to Johnny's mothers' kitchen, is worth a darn. However, somehow johnny restaurants get hype, but the hype is like a new record from Weezer. They were never good. And Johnny bbq destroyed more than just my sweater, they destroyed my faith in BBQ. (Temporarily that is). With regard to the food, the meat was tasteless, it lacked seasoning. I've tasted something similar as kid. Oh yeah, Gerber. Mashed peas, of course. The sides were equally tasteless. Eating from a jar mayonnaise would mimic the potato salad. Hey, just stay home and eat Mayo, you'll be dining in at Johnny's. The sauces were OK, average at best. Not a bad variety, to say the least. Sincerely, Johnny b. not so good.

My wife and I eat here often. The food and service is always good. Just remember that anytime before dinner you have to place your order at the counter. They do a great job with carry out orders also. Don't be afraid to call in and pick up. My youngest son loves their fries. The sauce is good. It's tomato based so it isn't sweet. Definitely, worth eating at again and again.

Fun down home restaurant with good food and nice casual atmosphere. Clean and comfortable. Self serve but worth it. Wonderful display of all manner of pigs above the fireplace..

Went in to check out the food before we decided to cater. It's was so so as Bbq goes. The ribs were fall off the bone, which was good. The slaw seemed to come out of a container & I found a hair in my beans. Not a fan of the sauce, to "ketchupy" for my taste. I also saw one of the girls filling the sauce containers out of a big 5gal bucket of sauce, which wasn't on the cleanest of floors. (Probably why I found a hair)... So, this place is average. Not horrible but not terrific.

Great barbeque beef brisket sandwich. Seasoned fries are also delicious.

Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. There were 5 of us, 2 adults 2 teens and a 3 yr old. We ordered the combo platter, a pound of burnt ends, a pint of beans and the kids corn dog nugget meal. We were all stuffed, and had leftovers to bring home. Great sauce flavors too.

YUM. Great bbq that is savory and cooked just right. Not bad on price, either. A nice little hole-in-the-wall bbq joint.

Very good BBQ in a part of the world that really knows BBQ. Had my usual Brisket sandwich (always a good standby when you want to get a feel for a new BBQ joint), and found it to be quite good. The sauce was a little spicy for me (I am an admitted spice wimp), but not horribly so. If I lived here I would put this place on the regular rotation.

I had Johnny's cater my daughters wedding last weekend and they did such a great job that I felt I needed to share. We had beef, pork and turkey for the meats that came with beans, slaw and potato salad as well as all of the plates, napkin, plastic ware and a nice selection of sauces. While I had planned a little long (200 people) to ensure that we wouldn't run out, this turned out to not be necessary as the quantity delivered was higher than I would have expected. We could have fed 300 easily. All of the meats and beans came delivered hot and sides cold. They have better slaw and beans than most BBQ joints but also the best potato salad around. The meats were all excellent. I will openly admit that Jack Stack has a little better brisket but they also have the worst pork in town in my opinion. Johnny's meats were all very good. We selected Johnny's due to recommendations made by others that have used them. We had an outstanding experience and I would highly recommend Johnny's to anyone who is looking to cater BBQ for a large group.

My review of Johnny's after my first visit was very high but I've noticed since then, it bounces between really good and ok. Seems like it depends on who's in the kitchen that day. The brisket has always been consistently good and so have the fries. The sausage was excellent out of the gate but I've yet to match it since. I would recommend it as an alternative to Oklahoma Joe's but if you can stand to wait at Joe's, it 's worth it.

Johnny's has excellent BBQ. I've tried a lot of things on the menu and have yet to be disappointed. The chicken, pulled pork, brisket, ribs, burnt ends, and sausage are all excellent. The mac and cheese wedges are awesome, as are the seasoned fries. Prices are more than reasonable. The one thing I think could be improved would be the BBQ sauce. None of them are bad, I just prefer a different style of BBQ sauce.

Very good BBQ at an excellent price. Pork burnt ends and smoked turkey are particularly good.

KC BBQ is good and this place keeps it going. The beef is top notch. the inside is not the best and has alot of old folks most the time, but the waitresses are hot and make it ok. The food is really what this place is all about.

After seeing it featured on Drivers, Dine-Ins, and Dives we checked it out. We've been fans since our first visit! LOVE their Pulled Pork sandwhich and baked beans! They always have fresh food with great prices!

I have lived by this place and passed it several times. Finally decided to stop in. I was craving some brisket. I ordered a small plate. The brisket was good, little fatty. Loved the fries. Baked beans were super smoked. More smokey than the meat. Although the bbq sauce tasted more like spiked ketchup, it was edible. I probably stop in again.

  • Amanda P.

The pulled pork was smoky and tender and not fatty, which was nice. The pricing is reasonable for the amount of food you get. I did not like the sauce choices, they just had an "off" taste to them. Thankfully, the restaurant doesn't drown the food in their sauce.

I fell back off of the vegetarian wagon not long ago and decided to hammer down some critter flesh and potatoes. BBQ was great, but the crinkle cut fries were some of the best I've ever had. They were crispy, fresh, and they were cooked in oil that was just the right temp so the outside was seared and the inside was perfect. I'm sure that I'll be back for another smoky cholesterol high again soon.

Had their beef burnt ends this Thurs. They were like chewing on spongy rubbery pieces of meat. I have had their ribs and they were pretty good. But I won't try these burnt ends again.

Good bbq, very disorganized in the front. The front staff didn't seem to know what they were doing. Only two people working on a Saturday for lunch. Their food is good and I will definately go back, hope service is better next time. The burnt end sandwich is delicious.

  • Don A.

The ribs were good suck off the bone tender but the house sauce was poured on them before serving . I prefer to add the sauce as I would Liked to. The servers were very polite and the atmosphere good. I enjoyed the Hickory sauce better than their house sauce. So if you don't want sauce poured on them by the cook, ask for them to be dry.

How did I not know this place existed? Apparently there are two locations in the KC area. This one is way off the beaten path. If you're not from the south Johnson County area, I don't know how or why you would stumble onto to this place. I went for a lunch special I heard on the radio. I had the burnt ends and fries. With a drink, it was just under $7. The portion wasn't that big, but I think it's because it was a limited-time special. It didn't really matter, though, because I ate it all, and I was full. Nobody needs to eat more than the two fistfuls of food I ate that day. The barbecue sauce is more sweet than sour, which I like. I want to try the sandwiches, so I'll probably be back. In terms of how it stacks up with other KC barbecue, it definitely opened in the right city. They know what they're doing.

I love me some Oklahoma Joe's (albeit salty as hell), Fiorella Jack Stack (little too fancy & small portions), Gates (rudeness at it's finest), Zarda's, and Rosedale's BBQ. But, the one BBQ joint I've been eating at for over 20 years and often times not recognized around Kansas City is Johnny's BBQ. The original location down off Johnson Drive in Mission has been a mainstay for years. I was ecstatic when the Olathe location opened up years ago also. The location is a little funky and hidden off Old 56 highway out by the Great Mall in Olathe, Kansas. This particular neighborhood is a mix of industrial, working class, not far from upper middle class, and borders a mix in Gardner as well. Approaching the building you immediately wonder where the parking is.......Mainly located behind the building. A few spots sit out front that are used by dump trucks and tractor trailers. Get beyond the limited parking and venture inside. Immediately you are taken aback with the vast amount of seating inside. The place is somewhat sprawling compared to most BBQ establishments. Not to fret, Johnny's loses NONE of that gritty down home BBQ ambiance many of us crave. No fancy artwork, lighting, upholstery, or waiters/waitresses running around. Ordering is still done by good old fashioned "walk up to the counter" and tell the cashier exactly what you want. The line moves super fast and efficiently regardless of crowd. Daily specials are offered and the menu is pretty straight forward. Where to begin with the food.............I'll start out by saying the beef brisket is a consistent staple at Johnny's. Never ever is the beef fatty or chewy. Tender and succulent with great flavoring. The sausage is fantastic as well. The ham and turkey are the usual BBQ variety. Kind of hard to mess those cuts of meat up regardless of establishment. The ribs.........I will say their ribs aren't the best in the city. Hit or miss on the ribs over the years. When their on, boy they are some of the best. When their off, your dog may have a difficult time devouring them. The beans are quite tasty. Absolutely love their potato salad. OK, here it comes.......their french fries are out of this world!$%#!! May be sacrilegious to say, but I prefer their fries over Oklahoma Joe's. You will get the same style crinkle cut french fries in the wax bag that is common at Rosedale's. These things are so hot you literally have to wait a few minutes to eat them. Crispy and never greasy. Big plus. How could I forget their chicken. Not the healthiest menu item around but their chicken is wonderful. Smoked+deep fried=guilty pleasure. Hard to explain the taste and texture. Therefore, try for yourself. The meat platters are a good option to sample all their food. Standard bread or buns are available. Oh, almost forgot about the burnt ends. Well, as always, burnt ends are big time hit or miss around the country. The most consistent burnt ends I've ever had were at Zarda's BBQ. Johnny has excellent burnt ends on the right day. During an off day, again you may have trouble getting Fido to chew these things up. Another crazy menu option is their chili dogs. I don't eat hot dogs anymore, but when I did they were some of the best around. Many have said the same thing. Great pickles are served and these are often overlooked as a measuring stick with BBQ restaurants. If Guy Fieri raves about your food, you can bet it's some of the best BBQ in the United States. Trust me folks, this is old school Kansas City down & dirty BBQ that should be mentioned in the same breath as Gates, Arthur Bryants, Rosedale.s, Jack Stacks, and Oklahoma Joe's. Unfortunately, Johnny's is often overlooked and never mentioned as a go-to BBQ joint in KC. Sadly, many BBQ connoisseur's are missing out on a true treasure in Kansas City.

Good brisket -- moist and smokey. I like the sauce a lot too. The crinkle-cut fries are no good, but I'm not a fan of that style of fry to begin with, so you might dig 'em. They have Boulevard Wheat on tap, and they serve it in schooners.

Good ribs and sauce! Unfortunately it stopped there. Ok slaw. Poor service, although I didn't expect much from a bunch of teenager girls. Bathroom could have been much cleaner considering the employees just stood around being chatty cathys. I'll be back to try the food again, maybe I just caught them on an off day.

I've been to Johnny's in Olathe on other occasions, always when someone else picks. And my rating is actually 2.5 stars. Johnny's is always busy, a good sign me thinks, but the food is just never spectacular. It's fine, it just doesn't wow me (for the record, neither does OK Joe's, but that's another review). The place is consistent. Today I had the burnt end special - pork. It didn't look or feel like burnt ends I've had other places, but the meat was tender and moist, definitely not over-seasoned. There wasn't a lot of sauce, but there was sauce on the table so I could add my own. I subbed BBQ beans for my fries and found them to be quite tasty. And I did treat myself to a strawberry pop. Annoyance: when the server cleared the previous guests' trays from our table she did not come back to wipe the table off. Will I go back? Probably when my father-in-law suggests it again.

I stopped at Johnny's BBQ for an early dinner. I had been wanting to try this place out since the opened. I ordered the combo plate, beef, pork, sausage and ribs. I comes with bread fries and a couple of onion rings. It was kind of pricey, $16.99, but i was a lot of food. It didn't take long at all to get my food. Here's the breakdown The best on the plate was the sausage. It had a nice gentle smoke flavor and was pretty mild. The first bite of pork I took had a very strong smoke flavor, but that was because it had a lot of bark (the dark crusty outside of the meat). When I took another bite with a little less bark the smoke flavor balanced out well. The ribs also had too much smoke on the. In smoking meat, more smoke is never better. After a while to much smoke can give a bitter taste and turn the bark from the rich mahogany color that is awesome, to a black burnt looking color that is not. The ribs were black, not burnt from too much smoke. There were still edible, but not as good as they could be. The brisket was tender and very moist, but had no smoke flavor. I could see a smoke ring, I just couldn't taste it in the meat. The had their own sauce on the table and at first I didn't really like it, but as I had more it kind of grew on me. It is a mix of sweet tomato with a little vinegar in it. The service was good and the place is clean. Would I come back to Johnny's, probably not as there are much better choices that are closer to where I live.
