For quite a while I was eating here at least once a week. It is an unassuming place, there's always lots of parking (even when they're crowded), it's cheap, and the food is great. It's pretty hard to ask more than that of anyplace, isn't it? I love their salsa; it's not chunky and it's an odd color, but don't let that deter you. It is incredibly flavorful with lots of garlic and peppers mixed in. There are daily specials, but I have become incredibly partial to the combo "The Hombre." 2 hard-shelled beef tacos and 2 enchiladas with an enchilada sauce so fantastic I'd happily eat it as its own soup. They offer refried beans, black beans or ranchero beans, rice and fideo as their side options. Personally, I think the fideo is pretty gross, but that's the only thing in the place I've ever been less than thrilled with. The place makes a peach melon margarita that is sensational.

Great neighborhood place. Very casual and quick service. Friendly wait staff too. The fideo is awesome as well as the guacamole and tacos. We go at least every few months and even on busy nights, there is never a long wait. I would skip taco Tuesday, however, as the tacos are cheaper but of lesser quality as well. Great overall place.

My husband and I live in the area and have been to Salsa Grill a couple times now. We liked the food, but loved the salsa! Both times we went, we were most impressed with the service and the atmosphere. It is a cute place in our neighborhood and priced fairly. I am a vegetarian and had a several options, which can be difficult to find. We will definitely return.

Although it was surprisingly packed on a Tuesday night, I have to wonder why. I really enjoy great, fresh, authentic Mexican food, but I have a soft spot in my heart for some good old tex/mex from time to time when it's done well and this is what I was hoping for at Salsa Grill. Problem is, it wasn't really done well. I ordered a taco/enchilada combination plate and the taco was drier than the Sahara and more bland than a Kenny G record. The enchilada, smothered in red sauce and about half of Wisconsin's yearly total of cheese production was also somehow dry. I couldn't wrap my brain around that. You can choose between rice, refried beans, black beans, pinto beans, or fideo. I had the rice, which was just really oily and the fideo which lacked in cumin or any other regional spice and just sort of tasted like spaghetti-o's. The two stars are for the salsa which was surprisingly good, and for the service. The place wasn't awful, but it fell short of the benchmark needed for a retrun visit.

This place was a real suprise. I was hesitant at first about the menu not having traditional combinations that I'm used to. I quickly learned that the portions are so large, you don't need the traditional combinations. And the salsa is so good! I will most definitely go back, especially for the tacos which were really well seasoned and not greasy! Yum!

The food it's awesome the atmosphere chill and the only thing that could be better is more attentive servers. The hombre is the plate I normally get and it's never disappointed me my wife usually gets the chicken trio but she switched it up this time and was delighted all the same. Make sure you get fideo as a side Mexican spaghetti at it's finest. For a local joint it's got no equal. Spend a little more tonight and skip the taco bell have a beer and an enchilada you will be glad you did. Side note my wife says the veggie enchilada is awesome!

I stopped in on a Wednesday for the burrito plate lunch special ($5.95) and a drink ($2.25). Complimentary chips and two salsas (mild and medium) were served almost immediately. The chips were thin, and tasty, while the medium salsa had a nice heat level. My order was served in about eight minutes. The burrito was packed with plenty of delicious, shredded, white chicken meat, and covered with melted cheese. The black beans were very good. The service was friendly, and attentive, making for a very good experience, and a very good lunch deal.

Great local Mexican restaurant! My hubby had the beef burrito and I had beef tamales. Both of us agreed better than anything else in the area. Generous portions and the ranchero beans are to die for. The fideo is also quite tasty. I also had their sangria and love it! Amazing find. Reasonably price.

I LOVE this place!!! THE BEST Salsa in town!! Seriously!!!! Addicted to their Chicken Taco Salad with Mexi Ranch so I really struggle with trying something else!! But, when I do, I am not disappointed!! The steak and mushroom burrito is a great runner up! I love the locally owned, neighborhood places. Great service and friendly staff!!! Keep it growing guys!!!

2nd times a charm? Sorry to to say no. Two and thru is more like it, watered down drinks and bar food = 1 star

Just all right. It' busy...so lots of people must like it...but it's one of the last places i'd choose. Every time someone drags me here, i think to myself..."wow....i could be eating at Mi Ranchito or Fronteras"...or Taco Bell, for that matter. Tonight, i had the Salsa Grill Burrito which had pork and beef. It was dry and, just all around bland. Even the chips and salsa are blech. The salsa is overly-processed and not at all fresh.

  • Thomas M.

I bought some over priced, but good tamales. I got ok service (taking into account that the manager forgot my call-in carry out order).

Great every time I go. Salsa is awesome and the fajitas are great! Prices are good, service is great, and location is nice.

Well I do have to admit that this is one of my nieces fav places to eat. I enjoyed the food, but for some reason I've had better. Nothing was really special in my eyes. Not a place I would choose to go back to to, just because I know of a few other places I like better, but I would go if someone wanted to. We shared the single serving size of fajitas and that was plenty for the two of us. They have were you can get it for two, but I think we would have taken that half home. The fajitas were good, a little extra greasy, but good in flavor. Would order them again if I return to this place. It's not that it was bad, just not my favorite.

  • BS H.

Service was good. Taco salads were bland. Lettuce soggy, I wouldn't order that again. Absolutely tasteless.

    (2)
  • Rob S.

Honestly, look elsewhere. If you are the kind of person who thinks Taco Bell is great Mexican food, you'll love it here. Frankly it's okay at best, but its not at all worthy of 4 stars, or anything close. Good people and all that, but the food is just highly average!

I am such a sucker for this place. Thin, warm chips and three kinds of salsa on the heat spectrum. What can I say, try the salsa at Salsa Grill. Beware of long waits on Taco Tuesdays. Servers are really good, too.

  • Stacy L.

Loved the medium salsa and want to go back just to eat that. I am anxious to go back and try every salsa they have. After all, a place called "Salsa Grill" should have fantastic salsa, right?

I came here last Friday night for the first time. I just moved back to the area after 8 years in Lawrence and am still looking for a good Mexican place with quality margaritas and food. We arrived around 8:30 and the place was reasonably busy, not the most inviting location in a strip mall off Johnson Drive but the inside was nice enough...had kind of a sports bar feel to it. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. We started off with a couple of margaritas (on special for $3.85 each) and were disappointed by the fact that it tasted like there may have been about 95% mixer and just a splash of tequila. We decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and try a second to see if they might make it a little stronger but the second round was just as bad. And with the amount of ice they used, it was hardly worth the price we paid for them. I got the enchilada plate with 2 beef and 1 chicken along with black beans and rice as my sides. I liked the fact that they let you get a combination instead of all 3 of the same kind, but unfortunately neither the chicken or the beef were that impressive. I ended up leaving over half of my plate for my boyfriend to finish off later. The ground beef wasn't seasoned much at all and tasted like something you could get at pretty much any run of the mill tex-mex place in town. The black beans were decent, but those are kind of hard to mess up. My boyfriend had the pork chimichanga and he enjoyed it. He tried the fideo as one of his sides and we were told that it tastes kind of like Mexican spaghettios....and the waitress was right, except minus the Mexican part. It wasn't BAD, just unusual I guess. The best part of the entire experience was by far the salsa. We enjoyed the original salsa we got so the waitress asked us if we were interested in something hotter and we obliged since we're suckers for spicy food. It didn't disappoint. Good chips and salsa are a MUST in my opinion. Our bill came out to $44 including tip and made me wish that I would've stopped down the street at Don Chilito's where I could have gotten MUCH more delicious food for half the price. Overall, our experience wasn't awful and I'll probably come back again but I'll definitely be trying a few other places in there area before returning to this one.

Great chips and salsa. Their hot salsa is even better. I have been twice and once I had the enchiladas with some green yummy sauce and cheese and the second time I had the fish tacos. The fish tacos were delicious, like order again good. The enchiladas were nice but a bit toooooo cheesy for my tastes. I had spanish rice with both and it was alright, a bit dry, but decent flavor. In terms of beans: black are better than ranchero. I cannot speak for their other varieties though I'm interested in trying them. Overall, nice place, happy patio, and a fairly good skinny margarita.

This place is always so busy so i figured it would be delish. Not so much. The salsa was good. Nothing else was spectacular. The menu is not very big and so it was almost hard to select my meal because the menu was so basic and lacking really. The fideo is really gross don't do it, they seem to serve it as a desperate attempt to have that "something different." The service was decent but I dislike waiting forever for refills on my water like we had to on this trip. We won't eat there a second time. There are far more better options for Mexican food in KC.

  • Nilav R.

This place has a pretty elaborate list of margaritas that you can try. The food is pretty decent too.

I live off Southwest Blvd and have eaten at nearly all the authentic Mexican joints there. No one in KC area has salsa like Salsa Grill. It's amazing. The salsa is 5 star! Mild, medium and hot are all different and full of flavor! Chips have the perfect thin crisp consistency. The food is good "American" Mexican and affordable. Try the veggie enchiladas or shrimp fajitas! This salsa will knock your socks off!

  • Christina M.

This is the "go-to" Mexican restaurant for my roommate and I. We don't live very far away so we end up here at least once a month. We love the salsa and I enjoy their vegetarian selections!

  • Frank R.

Salsa was ok, but I was expecting better after reading all the reviews. Maybe it was a bad salsa day. The food was just ok as well. I had the lunch special that was a pork burrito but may did it lack in seasoning. It was probably the most bland Mexican I have had in a very long time. I will give then one more chance but if i is the same old bland food it was this last time the it will be my last time.

My husband and I eat at the Salsa Grill quite frequently- WE LOVE IT! Every dish is Wonderful! The Salsa Grill is so much better than the chain restaruants.

Is this place authentic? Doubt it. Is it good anyway? I think so. I love me some chips and salsa, and the salsa here is fresh and good and available in three different heat levels. Obviously, I'm partial to the hot one. The daily specials are good and cheap, and I always have leftovers. You can't go wrong with the burritos, and the spicy enchiladas suizas have a surprising kick - the chicken enchiladas are topped with a green chile sauce the consistency of wasabi. Sounds weird, but tastes delicious. I can also vouch for the margaritas, although I honestly don't think I've ever met one I didn't like. Feel free to peruse my previous reviews for some of my tequila-fueled exploits. When you're craving some spicy Mexican, but want something quick and close, Salsa Grill does the trick.

We live right down the street from Salsa Grill and had passed it many of times and finally decided to try it out lat weekend. The food was great, and the service was pretty good too. I got the fish tacos and they weren't greasy like most mexican places make them which is a plus in my book. My bf (who is very picky about mexican food because it is his favorite), got the chimichanga and loved it!

  • Dvi P.

This was my first time eating here. My friends and I are foodies and love Mexican food. Our usual spots are Jose Peppers and Dos-Reales. We were looking some place new to go and came across Salsa Grill and WE ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! The salsa was different but delicious. My friends got the Salsa Grill Chill- their signature margs, I think and they were really good, too. The food was overall very delicious. Food quantity was good for the price. I would've given this 4 stars but our waiter was awesome and that's why this place deserves 5 stars! Definitely one of our new favorite spots!

I've come here a little less than a dozen times in the past year, partly because of the salsa and every time I ask my girlfriend where she wants to eat, she says "SALSA GRILL!" The service is OUTSTANDING. We've had the same 2 or 3 waiters/waitresses every time we come. Attentive service and always quick to refill your drinks, chips and salsa. They give you two salsas (not sure which one is which) but I have my favorite of the hotter of the two. They offer you a "hot" version, but I guess my favorite is the middle of all three of them. Chips are light and crisp. As for the menu I tend to stick to the chicken fajitas. I've tried numerous items but nothing really compares to their fajitas. The tacos are good, but lack a little flavor. I'm not sure what it is, but the meat isn't spiced as much as I would like it. I still eat them on occasion for Taco Tuesday, which can get pretty busy, so go early if you can. My girlfriend is in love with the sauce that comes on the enchiladas. It's pretty tasty. I've had the taco salad and is just kinda "eh", as well as the spicy chicken soft tacos. Just okay but probably wouldn't order it again. I just stick to the fajitas. Great place that's near by with great patio, food and drink specials, and darn good salsa. Stop by if you can.

This is my favorite salsa in KC. Weird because you wouldn't expect it in the suburb of Mission. I really like it though. The decor is a little cheesy, but most Mexican restaurants are. I really liked the Skinny Margarita, wasn't too sweet. Definitely try the veggie enchilada, pass on the quesadilla. The service is sometimes really slow, especially if they're in the middle of a rush, but it's never been bad to where I wouldn't go back.

I can say without a doubt the 4th star came from the pure tastiness of the medium salsa. Frankly, it should be expected due to the name! All the other food I have had is what a 3-star would suggest 'a-ok'. I have been here for lunch several times and dinner once. I prefer lunch, simply for portion size and the pricing that accompanies it. For the most part the dishes are pretty standard and not too out of the box, ergo you know what to expect. I find the rice is a little bland, but mixed with some salsa or queso that comes on your dish, it is pretty tasty. We did try the fideo and weren't really sure what it was supposed to taste like, but I thought the taste was similar to canned spaghettios... The margarita I got with dinner was pretty standard and tasty. Service has been pretty average as well, quick for lunch, a little slower at dinner. Drinks and salsa were always full - so I was happy! Truthfully, come here for the medium salsa, it appears to be made fresh daily...somewhat chunky with lots of flavor! Oh, and they have Diet Mountain Dew from the fountain, always a bonus in my book.

We tried Salsa Grill on a Saturday evening around 8:30. I think the server had just been hit with a number of tables, so although she was very nice, she was flustered and the service was slow. The chips and salsa were good, not as tasty as Jose Peppers, but still yummy. Portion sizes were large and filling. I had the chicken chimichanga, the chicken was good but the sauce was unremarkable. If I recall correctly, they had a margarita special, and the margarita was delicious. Not too sweet, potent with a little kick. If you're in the area, don't hesitate to drop in, but I wouldn't travel a great distance to dine here.

As far as "mexican" restaurants go in this town, you could probably do worse. The chips and salsa were good. We ordered the white cheese dip and it comes in two sizes...minuscule and bathtub sized. Would be nice if there were a medium option. It was your typical white cheese dip...creamy, cheesy and good. The menu is all very basic, typical mexican-type fare. I ordered the quesadilla because the thought of a bean burrito didn't appeal to me. They have so many choices in beans, though. Strange. For lunch, you only get one side. As opposed to most places that will usually give you rice AND beans, you have to choose one or the other here. And that one side comes out in another bathtub sized bowl. Just a small dab of beans and a couple spoonfuls of rice would be nice. I don't need a giant bowl of beans. Food was ok and the service was good. It wasn't outstanding, but I wasn't expecting anything spectacular. It is what it is...a quick lunch/dinner place with no frills.

Oh my freaking gosh this place is amazing! I would consider myself a type of Mexican restaurateur, being that I'm in the middle of the extremes, and I like my salsa with a kick but not so blazing that I feel like tearing my face off. Mexican is my food of choice, and I believe I've found my mecca in Salsa Grill. I LOVE it. First, the staff there is very friendly- it is always busy and you can tell they are really busy, but they always have a smile on their faces. Second, the salsa is amazing. I prefer the non-chunky kind of salsa, and this really delivers. Their spinach cheese dip is also a must-have- we get it every time. However, you might want to hold off on the regular 'queso' dip- it tasted like it came from a jar and was something you could make at home. The enchiladas are by far my favorite dish there. They have a unique flavor that I find myself craving every time I drive down Johnson drive and happen to see the sign. The tacos, burritos, and taco salad are great as well, especially with the salsa on top of it. You can tell that Salsa Grill is a family-owned restaurant, and I really like that about it. It has a home-town type of feel and I always have a good experience every time I'm there. Most of the dishes range from $8-12 for dinner (they have a smaller, cheaper lunch menu) and they also have a full bar, with great drink specials during the week. Give it a chance. You won't be disappointed!

I had never heard of Salsa Grill until moving to Mission but now frequent 2/month. It is among our favorite local Mexican places in KC. Although always crowded, we have never had a wait. They serve 2 delicious salsas when you are seated and I recommend to order the hot sauce as well. I would not say that the food is authentic Mexican however it is consistently good and comparable to any of the big name KC Mexican joints (Margaritas, Ponak's, Mi Ranchito, etc)

Love this place! The HOT salsa is awesome and their food is fresh. Great value, excellent service and yummy margaritas. Will definitely go back and recommend. This is a go-to spot.

My husband and I live close by. He is a mexican food lover..Me not so much..He likes the hombre, Chimichanga and the salsa grill burrito. The tacos are good but pretty plain and standard. The Salsa dip is your regular white cheese dip. The enchiladas arent bad..pretty bland. The salsa chill is pretty good but they limit you to two of those. Im not much of a salsa person but it is not too bad...very citrusy..Overall its a pretty good locally owned place.

Hot sauce - awesome. Employees - awesome. Vegetarian burrito is great too. We eat at Salsa Grill on a regular basis. One of the owners, John, always strives to make it a better experience by rolling out different salsas, drinks and food.

We used to be a regular at Salsa Grill ... until tonight. I bit into a big piece of plastic. Like cellophane in the beans. The manager didn't even come to the table to apologize, and even more insulting, they took a whopping $1.55 off my order. (Which frankly was worse than nothing at all). Very disappointing to lose one of my regular spots.

  • Erik R.

The name is pretty accurate. The feature of this place is the salsa. It is the pureed (no chunks) type, but very thick and flavorful. It is one of my favorites. Having said that, everything else is so-so. The service has always been pretty good, the restaurant itself is nice, but no real decor, and the food is pretty good, but again, nothing makes me crave it or think of it when I want Mexican food. This place is usually pretty busy on the weekend, but a good choice if you find yourself trying to eat out at 6 or 7 on Saturday and don't want to wait an hour.

We have been to this neighborhood Mexican place at least 4 times in the last 2 years and been disappointed every time. Nothing outstanding, never good service, not even a decent margarita! Skip it!!

Had Salsa Grill today and YUM!!! The Salsa is BACK!!! On Wednesday's the lunch special is the Supreme Nachos and my husband and I shared. They are really good and only around 6 dollars on Wednesday's. My husband loved the Fideo and I ordered a side of the Salsa Grill dip.. I have been missing the Salsa and it was really good today. It was thick and cold (Just the way I like it) If it's warm than it's runny and not so yummy. Plus love it when the chips are warm. Overall had a great experience at lunch and loved our waitress. Angel I think her name was is always very pleasant and never lets your salsa cup go dry.

Ok so I have been here several times - it is close to my office and a friend is a relative of the owner. So, since I think this is the first time I have been since joining Yelp I thought I would give it a go. Generally speaking I am not a fan - and it isn't cause I blame them cause I spill stuff on my shirt every single time I eat there. No, that's not it. The chips and salsa dude - so not super awesome. The chips aren't good - the salsa is ok but I have had better. And really - isn't that what mexican food is all about? Good chips and salsa? :D Anyway, today, after eating half my body weight in chips and salsa - I was giving them the benefit of the doubt ok?? Anyway, I ordered the chicken quesadilla. It was super chickeny but...I didn't love it. The cheesy parts were good but otherwise I was eh... However, their blacks beans are awesome! Love them. That is what saves them. Delicious beany, cheesy and warm and good. Good I say. The service is always pretty good when they aren't super busy. when they are busy they never have enough staff it seems and the service is sketchy. Today, it was fine - my water glass was filled, I always had chips and salsa, and our check was brought out lickity split. so although the chips and salsa aren't super and even though I have had better food....the beans are good and the service is good. So if you like well served beans, this is the place for you :) okaybye.

Salsa is my other go to Mexican place, the food is always hot and delicious. Their Guac, white cheese sauce, Pork Burrito and ranchero beans are my weapon of choice at this hidden gem. Anyway, it's just a good all around place to grab lunch. My office is close by and it's easy to get to. Try it out and I think you will be pleased.

I have no regrets about making the move from Colorado Springs to Kansas City earlier this year but there are a few things I miss. On the top of that list is authentic, cheap and wonderful Mexican restaurants. Sadly these places which populate strip malls all over Colorado simply do not seem to exist here. I was hoping Salsa Grill would turn the tide - unfortunately it did not. It is not that the food was bad it was simply that Salsa Grill was more of a local interpretation of the On The Border chain. I would say the restaurant has half of it's name correct. The salsa was good - we tried the mild, medium and hot - all were well flavored though none, including the hot were overly spicy. The "grill" portion of the menu was where they fell short. Literally only six options here including fajitas, a Chili's inspired "Tequilla Lime Chicken" and a hamburger - really guys? I was hoping for Carne Asada, Pork Carnitas, Chicken Mole. None of these Mexican standards were anywhere to be found. In their place was burrito's, enchilada's, taco's etc. - disappointing. In the end I settled on the Chicken Flautas which were a good option among the limited menu choices. They were freshly cooked though I found both sides I ordered, black beans and rice to be bland. Portions were very large and inexpensive. Overall I would say Salsa Grill is not a bad option it simply was not what I was hoping it could be. Was hoping for my local authentic hole in the wall Mexican - I am left to continue this search and am wondering if we left all of these places behind in Colorado.

Great salsa! Our waiter was very good, but a little quiet. He sneaked up on me- I had already drank 2 beers so he startled me a little. ;) My hubby had some steak quesadilla. I had vegetarian enchiladas which were great! We had so much left over because by the time we got our food we had enjoyed so much of the yummy chips and salsa! I'm not saying we had to wait- we were just over eager to get as much salsa as we could! We should def. be back there again!

Awesome, fantastic, super service! Honestly, the service in this place made up for the fact that the food was just ok. Maybe I'll try something different the next time, because I'm sure I'll be back.

The food is decent. Surely not authentic Mexican, but tasty nonetheless. We finally tried it on Taco Tuesday, if you will. While it took a bit too long to be sat from the front door (there were open tables) I quickly realized why. Our server was the fastest person in the entire world and our salsa bowl was NEVER empty. Which was quite the feat since we were practically drinking it. They didn't have a dedicated host/hostess; the servers just seemed to be taking turns seating patrons. I was happy to forego the immediate seating for the speedy table-side service. The variety of salsas (not just a name) actually earned this establishment an additional star on my review.

I was introduced to the Salsa Grill through local politics - the Democratic headquarters had, for years, been a couple of doors down. I highly recommend the combo fajitas and the tequila lime chicken.

While not Mi Ranchito's, this place is legit. Salsa is SO FRESH (or at least fresh tasting) and portions are great.. The do have some side fidelo as a side, which you don't see to often.. Did take out most of the time, and the serve chips out in plastic bags??? kinda different/mabye unsanitary?

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize.
