I was reminded of how awesome Henry's is when I went to a martini bar in Chicago. Oh, I should probably emphasize that it was a dive bar in Chicago--not anything particularly cosmopolitan (no pun intended), for you people looking for a swanky joint. I'll start with the coffee. Someone once told me Henry won some award for it's amazing coffee, which is why I first came here back in '01 when I was a sophomore in college. I'd come here and study or have coffee nights with pals. This place makes me despise Starbucks, which unfortunately is what I'm forced to drink the majority of the time now. So, I guess what I'm saying is, it could make you a coffee snob, which is both good and bad. By my junior year, Henry's Upstairs was by far my favorite bar. I have so many great memories of martinis (French Martini, please!), well-mixed drinks, bands, hanging out with Dave, the awesome owner...You can come here any day of the week, and you can have an awesome time! It's only gotten better since the smoking ban, which eliminated my biggest issue with it's rather small rooms with poor circulating air. Other notes: *Surplus of hipsters *Try the sangria! *Bathroom line provides interesting conversation, but long waits. Also, sometimes the bathroom is gross. *Balconies to smoke on *Sometimes the music is too loud (i'm old...i know!) You will like this place if you: *like to talk with your friends *like drinking next to artwork (became obsessed with one of the artists once--in a non-creepy way of course) *like having long discussions over drinks *if you don't wear northface by choice.

One of my favorite bars in Lawrence! Has a relaxed laid back atmosphere to it. A much calmer crowd than some of the other downtown establishments. Makes a great spot for a romantic date as most of the lighting is from candles, low wattage small light bulbs and a built in fireplace. It is kinda a hipster bar at times but I have seen everybody from Legal Drinking age college students to 50+ couples on a date. TIP: Go upstairs after 7pm for the best White Russians around Disclaimer: The content of the reviews I post on this website ( yelp.com ) consists of my own personal opinions from my own experiences (and occasionally the opinion's of others) and does not officially represent my employer, school or and personal business relationship's view in anyway and your personal experience may or may not differ from mine. There should be two separate listings for Henry's Coffee Shop and Henry's Upstairs. I know they're in the same building, but Henry's Upstairs is really the good spot. I never go to the coffee shop. However, I've been at Henry's Upstairs for LGBT awareness night, good-bye cocktail hours, and after works drinks. Delightfully few college kids. This place draws a smart and cute crowd. The could afford to dust once in awhile, clean out the cobwebs, and slap a new coat of paint on each room. But, they have great bartenders, mix great drinks, and again, this is the crowd you want to hang with in town if you're somewhere between 23 and 49.

My hands down, favorite coffee shop in Lawrence. Great coffee and friendly staff. I don't come to Kansas often, but when I do, Henry's is my first stop for a good cup of coffee. An added bonus is the the upstairs bar. They have a good selection of beer on tap, not alot of seating but plenty of room to move around. The outdoor patio is my favorite spot. They have a heating lamp for the colder days and a few benches to sit down. Great place to have a good conversation with friends (preferably over a pint of Boulevard Wheat)!

Very nice place to do a little work. WiFi is free and there are ample plugs accessible. The people are very friendly. The decor is a bit ragged, but that lends to it's charm.

When I first moved to Lawrence from Seattle, my goal was to try every coffee joint in town, and settle in to making whichever one was the best, my own. Henry's won. Now, I must admit, in all fairness, I do think that Z's Espresso actually has better beans. Problem is, I don't just consider the coffee when looking for the "best" joint; it has to be some place that I want to be. That said, Henry's won, and the only reason it doesn't get the 5 Star Rating is for the reason of the beans... So, why did Henry's win? Relationship is a big part of it. It's the place that won me over by the people who work there. It's the place that was easiest to plug in a laptop or pull out a sketchbook. It's the place that most of the time has great music on the stereo, and when it doesn't it's easy enough to put on the headphones. It's comfortable. I don't want a place that tries too hard, a place that puts on the trappings of a "hip coffeehouse". I want it to do what it does with the least amount of self-conscious necessity to be anything but a textural room with the sights, sounds, and smells of good coffee and creative energy. It's all about the vibe. Sure, sometimes the lines are long, but you're there to sip, not gulp. It's worth the wait, especially when everyone there sees you coming and knows your order. Oh, there's the bar upstairs, too. I dig it when it's not too crowded, and it's usually a standby if you want to go and talk over a drink. I've shown my art there. I've gotten the worst drunk of my life there. I've taken The Dame there, and I've had some amazing conversations with some of the best people I've ever met there. It's got a good energy, as well, with it's divvy-ed up little rooms and secret corners... Dare I say it's a Lawrence Institution? Let the history books decide, I need another Americano...

This is mostly a review for Henry's downstairs, as I do not tend to frequent bars. But, every time I'm here, I always bring my hot drink upstairs and sit nearly all alone up there -- I love it. I can't say I'd be up there if it was full of people, but when it's well lit by the setting sun (I always seem to find myself here sometime around 4 or 5 pm), you can take some time to appreciate the art on the walls, and have lots of space to talk to whoever else you may be with. The drinks are fairly priced, and I had a great chat with the knowledgeable barista at Henry's. It's always a hard choice between here and Java Break when I'm in downtown Lawrence.

Okay, this was years ago (pre-Yelp) and things might very well be better now, but I actually literally got snubbed here once and I have never gone back. I mean I walked up to the counter, the barista clearly saw me, and then she just... ignored me. She went right back to cleaning. I was so stunned I barely said anything. I stood there for like 3-5 minutes without a clue as to what to actually do in such a bizarre situation. Yell and scream? I hope not. Eventually I just turned around and walked right out the door. Seriously WTF? Was I out of uniform? Did I break some hipster rule? All snark aside I have never experienced anything like it before or since. I eat out a lot and I do go to coffee shops and even sometimes places where the help clearly doesn't think I should be there, but still... nothing like that. Ever. Yeah, I've seen people in customer "service" positions ignore half of what I say when it was inconvenient, but to be completely ignored? That wasn't the only time I'd gotten a "snobby" vibe from them, but to be outright snubbed? Unbelievable. If you've ever seen anything like it you'll understand that I'll never forget it and I might never forgive it.

5 stars for the coffee shop, 4 stars for the bar. The coffee shop is great! The baristas are always friendly and will make whatever weird drinks you order. No one minds if you sit on your laptop for hours. There are delicious baked goods! The bar upstairs is nice, too. They have good drink specials daily and often have warm drinks in the winter which is especially nice! The bar is very "intimate" by which I mean there's not a lot of space. It's crowded on weekends. It's kind of catacomb like with different rooms off different corridors. It's also very very dark! It has a lot of charm, being in an old building, but maybe too much charm sometimes.

The atmosphere is definitely original. Upstairs just off the mass street main drag. The place has a cozy, Almost secrete club like feel. It hosts a Lawrence local clientele, the kids that grew up here an know the town better than anyone else. It's a bit small though, which I see as the only real downside

My friends and I like to go here. The bartenders are friendly and have great customer service. Its a little small but the atmosphere is great. We love coming here.

This is a great cup of coffee. I went in for a quick cup to go one day and the server was friendly and very meticulous about how he made my latte. It's nice to see this level of passion about his work. The drink was awesome and I also enjoyed the chocolate chip muffin that I bought as well. Nice environment to hang out and do some studying/reading as well. I would definitely come back.

Fantastic coffee/tea and staff. Great music playlists, as well. The bathroom light switch could be easier to find and there could be more table space, but that just ads to the character of the stone walled, art filled character of the space. This is a must go coffee shop in Lawrence and I would recommend trying any latte with honey in the title b/c you won't regret it...

The atmosphere is perfectly warm and inviting; it definitely gives off a "come hither" vibe. I've never been a huge fan of the lattes, but my boyfriend adores them. One time we went in and I was unsatisfied with my drink, the incredible barista did everything she could to make me happy. I mean, this girl really went out of her way for me and I sincerely appreciated it. This experience alone, changed my opinion of this shop from "meh" to "hell yeah." Must check it out.

I wish I liked this place more than I do. First, what's great: the music. Last couple times I was in they were playing fantastic old blues stuff that I love, very atmospheric, good for getting work done too. The patio is really nice, on the south side of the street and usually not too bright to see your screen in the afternoons--perfect. Chairs out there aren't the most comfortable, but otherwise it's a great setting. Inside, if you get one of the two tables by the window, that's great too. They have pastries and fruit and chips and things, if that's what you're looking for. What's not so great, though... The espresso drinks. Every one I've had there is weak and milky and boring. Just not enough flavor or kick. I keep ordering different ones but am always disappointed. They also always seem to be halfway cold by the time I sit down. Gross. Maybe it's a better location for people who want house coffee, tea, or something else. Other counts against: the back half of the place is a little too dim to for my comfort. Okay for chatting, bad for productivity. Also, the bench seating that covers one wall has several of those gross slits that you can see the old foam through. Not fun to sit on. I'd give two and a half stars if I could. But I don't want to go too low, because... coffee shops. Love them.

The one good thing that I love about Henry's is the sangria. It's really good and probably the best that you will find in town. They also have it on special during the week. What I dislike is the atmosphere. If you are looking to meet a bunch of hipster grad students throwing down theory on a Friday night, this is your spot.

I love this coffee shop, and the bar above. The barista is always friendly, and they make your drink quickly and professionally. Great coffee, even though I am a chai tea kind of girl. I like that local art is featured, and the vibe is very laid back. A great place to study or read, if you are tired of your sofa. Stop by for a drink, with or without a book...

Great coffee, *exceptional* non-mainstream music, a real espresso dive with great folks centered in the middle of town. Serves all of the folks working next door at Sunflower Outdoor and Bike--and if a messy bike shop could design the ultimate coffee shop for a bunch of hard core bike geeks, it'd look just like this. Probably the most popular coffee hangout in Lawrence and for good reason. The ambiance, the location, the great coffee, the help. There should be one of these in every block. The piped music might include Django Reinhardt, Grisman/Garcia, Bird, Ella, Squirrel Nut Zippers, you name it. LOVE this place. Refill, please. Post summer Farmer's Market bliss.

Great venue for going out with friends. Very loud though. Don't plan on having meaninful conversations here because you'll find yourself shouting. They have a great outdoor patio and several small rooms to go in. I love the tiger/cheetah print room. Also, I found out recently they allow dogs on the outdoor porch. I met a wondeful Beagle last week here. Also they are very LGBT friendly. Which is awesome. But my husband has been mistaken for being gay just because he was here with another guy once.

Visited Henry's this morning after taking a 4 week break between semesters. Pleasantly surprised to see that a minor updating/renovation had occurred. Brand new wood floors had been installed. I'm a fan of the old hardwood darker type floors, but these new brighter/lighter floors are really nice. Big complaint from past patrons were the uneven floors requiring folded up cardboard or paper to level out the tables in Henry's. Well, these new floors have solved that problem. Nice and smooth/even. Also seems brighter in there with either new ceiling fans or brighter light bulbs.....not quite sure. I prefer the darker environment, but the new lighting is still a nice touch. Everything else seems the same. Usual great coffee and everything in Henry's is still "PT" quality. Have noticed that a weird taste still comes from their 1/2 & 1/2 container. Almost a spoiled taste on occasion. Still is present in my coffee. Weird. Thought maybe they were mixing the soy with regular 1/2 and 1/2. The barista said it was straight 1/2 and 1/2. Also, they tend to run out of coffee on occasion. Then again, that's a good sign that they are doing well. Always fresh coffee regardless. My go to drink is the PT Farm Girl blend. It's real hit and miss as to if they are brewing it or not. Usually you can find "Thunder Road" or various other PT varieties on tap. Bagel selection at Henry's is pretty good. Music is always top notch. Most of the Barista's are still there with a few new one's I noticed. Katy is still the best IMO. She is a dead ringer for Katy Perry. I swear you will think this when you see here. Refills are still a $1. You can't beat that price anywhere in town. To be honest, the real money maker at Henry's is upstairs in the bar area. We all know liquor is the financial back bone of many establishments and this is no different. Cool funky area upstairs and is always a treat. Watching co-ed drunks stumble over themselves and down the narrow flight of steps leading to the street is always a show in itself. As alway's, Henry's is not a bad spot in Lawrence Kansas. Check it out.

Went to the upstairs bar, so I can't comment on the coffee shop. The bar wasn't my favorite ever though. It's a very odd space, kind of a maze to find your way around. It's very obvious the building was something else before. The whole place was a little dirty, and seemed like it needed some redoing. It could definitely be an awesome space with some work though. The bartenders seemed nice, and there appeared to be a group of regulars that go there. I'd try it again, but I'd prefer they did some rennovations first.

Want a chill bar? Henry's upstairs is the place for you. Converted from an old apartment, everything from the built in wood booths to the glass art in the bathroom screams college town. Good sangria with fruit and strong on the wine. It's on special for $3 on Wednesday, it's a go-to for meeting with friends. They usually play a good selection of music too- Tom Petty last time I was there. It's fairly dim inside, so also it's also good on first dates.

I finally made it upstairs to the bar. I love the atmosphere. Red sangria was tasty. Skip the white and the Moscow mule. I love that Henry's downstairs offered .50 off for students during finals week.

I got to relive some college nostalgia this weekend at Henry's upstairs. Nice and dark with cozy seating; the perfect place to sit and catch up with friends while sipping some delicious house-made sangria. Also can't beat their Saturday night special of $4 double wells.

I'm always on the lookout for cute cafes to do some people watching and sketching, and lucky enough to live in Lawrence where such places abound! The seating area inside is kind of small, but with lots of books and bench seating and stuff. There's also a great patio area. When I went the other day I was lucky enough to catch the middle of a sale, 50 cents off espresso drinks with a student ID, so that rocked. The guy at the front was cute and nice and recommended a drink called The Cold Shoulder as one of their spring specials and something quite good. Dark and creamy at the same time and just a little bit sweet, I'm by no means a coffee snob but after subsiding off of dining hall coffee through the semester, this definitely tasted like the beginning of a great summer. I'd definitely recommend this place to friends, and I haven't even tried anything else yet!

  • Clarice W.

Henry's was fun at first but got old for me quickly. The downstairs area is a coffeeshop, and they have a bar upstairs. The coffeeshop is cute, frequented often by the same crowd of locals/students. The espresso drinks are decent but not wow-worthy. The bar upstairs has an artsy charm with mismatched, oddly shaped rooms, but drinks are expensive (for Lawrence at least) and don't really match up in terms of flavor - the sangria, which I'd heard good things about, was mediocre at best. Henry's is a fun place to check out, not the best place to frequent regularly - I find the overly-hipster feel a bit too elitist and exclusive.

The other night, still burning up from my shitty dining experience at India "Palace," and still in beaucoup d' pain from my wisdom tooth extraction, I needed to go to a happy place. One's happy place... it seems so simple and so cliché. Possibly even hippie speak. But to hell with all of that. I needed a happy place that wasn't an opium den. Not because I'm opposed at all to opium when in this much pain- it is way sexier and probably just as effective as the Vicoprofen I'm currently smoking, but because opium dens don't exist to my knowledge in Lawrence, Kansas. Plenty of crack/meth houses, but I prefer a less rustic decor. Anyway, I needed my happy place and in Lawrence this is Henry's. Just a side note that if any place can get me happy first thing in the morning, it's Henry's. So you can imagine that at my happiest hour, that being the later side of twilight, Henry's upstairs is the next best thing to an opium den. In fact, the ambiance isn't so far off! I could easily see a fancy sort lounging around on the banquets, looking quite smashing in the dim lighting and shabby bohemian chic surroundings. I might have been slurring from the pain, but the extremely kind bartender, quite possibly a savior, joked along with me as I made fun of myself and poured me a delicious glass of Italian red. I savored this amongst the small crowd that had already formed. There's all walks of life at Henry's and not your typical university crowd. I don't wish to cheapen things by assessing and describing the type of people you'll encounter here, but suffice to say that I feel most comfortable at this bar, enough to sit alone here with my glass of wine and not have to deal with any BS. This fine glass of vino set me back a measly $5 (and they have a decent list, especially for a full liquor bar.) Oh, Henry's I love thee! Thank you for existing and for turning a not so wonderful evening into a night worth writing about.

When I was going to school at KU years ago, Henry's was my first and foremost coffee dive. I could take my slick new bright white iBook (shut up, they were cool) into Henry's, order a froufrou drink and sit at the back for a long afternoon of getting tweaked on coffee and people watching (read: distraction from "studying). The baristas were always nice, cooler than you but cool about it, had good taste in music, sometimes punishingly hot, and they would even sometimes dance if the mood was right. The coffee is pretty good, the pastries are awesome, and the vibe is always laid back. When I was actually in the right mood to do so, I wrote a lot of papers here and never felt like I was being judged or looked at weirdly. It's chill! The upstairs bar later became one of my favorite wine and cocktail dives but I think it's a separate review opportunity so I'll save further commentary for it. Go check it out!

Henry's is the place in Lawrence where you're most likely to bond with someone over a laptop screen or a game of chess. It's dark, cozy and intimate, and one of the city's better coffee shops. Henry's atmosphere tends to be love it or hate it. I admit that often it can seem closed off or cliquish, but it's a godsend when you're trying to work on something. On that note, for me it's always been an "I need to get work done" sort of place, not an "I want to meet up with people" sort of place. The coffee options are delicious and inexpensive and the staff has always been friendly. It seems to be a popular place with European exchange students or people who've studied abroad. It's also one of the coffee houses in Lawrence where I can take my mother without worrying that she'll see something pornographic graffitied in the bathroom.

Writing this review... IN Henry's! My first cafe in lawrence, and I love it already. Sure, its definitely artsy, hipster and unique, but I feel cozy at the same time. Definitely doesn't have your typical plush modern couches. I got a short chai latte and its delicious, though definitely small and pricey for a place like Lawrence. But compared to San Diego, this is awesome. I love the fluffy foam on top; this ain't your typical starbucks froofroofoam. Plus the baristas are ultra nice. Tempted to get another somethin' to sip on before I head off to KC...

For as busy as it gets under heavy study-crowd traffic, the wifi always remains infinitely better than Javabreak, which has gone to a shotty, pre-paid type service. Also has some of the most friendly and engaging barista staff around. I constantly find myself here asking for a recently outdated special called "The Praying Mantis", which they always graciously make for me, as if I need the "icing" to their already delicious "cake".

I love Henry's so much! I now live in Austin, TX but hit up Henry's every time I visit Lawrence. I probably went to the upstairs bar 2-3 times a week in college. Great drinks, cheap prices, friendly staff, great ambiance- just a perfect bar!

My review for Henry's is just for it's upstairs during the evening hours.... Sangria? Yes, please! I like the fact they have good sangria (white and red), among other reasonably priced drinks. Who knew! But it was a pleasant surprise. The place itself is located upstairs from their bakery. It has a very narrow and steep staircase to get up to the bar. So, my two main concerns are for 1) people who may be handicapped and 2) drunk people trying to get down. ha-ha. Both sets of people might have difficulties. But, there might be another way to get up and down. I'm not sure tho. Well, once you get upstairs it's basically a loop with two rooms with a bar, bunch of booths, some tables and chairs. Pretty cozy and dark. It can get kinda crowded during the weekend nights, so you and your party may have to park it in one area. But if you get a nice booth, just stick with it. I particularly like the seats by the window because you can look out onto the street and also have a good overview of most of the bar. Nice atmosphere, good music, tasty sangria, overall fun night out.

It's Saturday night. You don't want to go to a bar, you've had enough of bad television, there are no decent films playing, Sylas & Maddy's is closed- where do you go? Henry's is the answer, my friend. Get some delicious coffee and play chess with a friend- they're open til 2am! The lighting is good for reading (they have a shelf of books if you're feeling wild), and the music is low enough where you can get work done even if you forgot your headphones at home. Henry can be your nerdy weekend warrior.

While I have enjoyed a great cup of coffee downstairs, this review is for the bar upstairs. This is definately our favorite place to visit when we are in Lawrence for the evening and I have never had a bad experience. Everyone is very friendly and warm, and the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. At times it can be crowded, but it is not overwhelming and I am sure you will run into traffic jams in many of the bars downtown. Just recently spent the evening in the bar, dropped my cellphone through the porch outside, and had a wonderful, helpful fellow that had worked there previously (not actually a current employee), not only save my phone, but also bought ME a drink when I had attempted to buy him one and just told me to enjoy my night. This is just one example of how friendly everyone is. My friends and I have traveled all over the place, but would still rank this little place high in our favorite places to go.

Henry's is my favorite place in Lawrence, hands down. Yes, the place is a bit run down, but it only adds to the charm. The coffee is the best in town (because they have the best baristas in the city). It was a little intimidating to walk into at first (am I cool enough to be here?) but now it feels like a second home. Everyone I've met here has been amazing and welcoming. It is a great place to socialize or type away on a laptop. Upstairs, it gets even better. The $4 sangria is delicious and the bartenders are easy on the eyes. Yes, it gets crowded and loud, but what college bar doesn't? If you get there early-ish, you can score a seat and chill out all night with your friends. Overall, I LOVE this place and I'll be sad to leave it behind when I move out from Lawrence.

Danny's, Skylark, Innertown Pub and Henry's are my top 4 favorite bars, with the first 3 in Chicago. It's essentially an old apartment that someone just moved out and then it was converted to a bar. Quaint, cozy, unique with relatively cheap beers, good quality and a diverse crowd, but leaning toward more hipsters and they like. The fireplace and outdoor area top it off.

While a certain other gin joint gets my afternoon business, Henry's is my favorite spot for evening shenanigans. The upstairs part, that is. Honestly, I don't pay much attention to the downstairs coffee shop unless I'm ordering a shot of espresso to mix with something from the bar. And if that isn't the most awesome option for late-night drinking, I don't know what is. But back to the bar! I love the tiny little separate rooms and funky layout. It makes it a little harder to locate your buddies maybe, but increases your chances of finding your own cozy little nook for the evening. The staff! Charming. Efficient. Competent. I want to wrap them up and take them home. One of my favorite thing about Henry's bar is that there is *no sitting* at the bar, so you don't have to worm your way through squatters blocking your path to the booze. Almost forgot to mention: Most awesome bar bathroom ever. This is what bumps it up to five stars. Yeah, it's a single toilet so sometimes there's a wait, but PEOPLE. It's always clean, and you don't have to share your pee space or listen to someone else yap away while you're trying to do your business. Weekend evenings can be packed. Henry's reputation is a solid one, and people know it. Which can sometimes be frustrating for those of us who don't like crowds. Come to think of it, what am I doing? What I meant to say is: Henry's is terrible, y'all. Go elsewhere. Yeah. This place...nah. It's not all that. *cough*

I love Henry's upstairs bar for a number of reasons: It feels like an old, renovated, over-bar apartment transformed into a bar (which I think it is!), complete with little adjoining rooms, windows overlooking the street and alley, even a fireplace! Local art on the walls, rotated on a regular basis. They have nice beers on tap and regular drink specials. The back patio (20 feet above the alley), especially, has a big-city vibe and is smoker-friendly. Lovely ambiance. Gay friendly. And they regularly host arts-related events (such as fiction readings and art shows). If you're looking for a local bar to which you wouldn't be embarassed to bring an out-of-town friend or special guest of your organization, this is a great place to choose. I also love Henry's downstairs: Great lemon bars, wonderful coffee and Italian sodas, wireless internet, great ambiance, friendly servers... this place has it all. Get your coffee downstairs and bring it upstairs. My favorite: A strong latte in one hand and a Guinness in the other, near the window just before sunset with friends. My favorite bar in Lawrence. EDIT: I dropped my phone under the decking of the smoking patio last night, and both the bouncer (last night) and the owner (this morning) went out of their way to help me retrieve it. Henry's rocks.

I adore Henry's! I've been here three times. Two times for the bar, and once for the coffee. The bar area upstairs is very homey and comforting. The coffee area is also comforting and has more of a quiet feel to it. Both parts have a different and good atmosphere. I love Henry's because it has a DIY-look to it. Very local and very fun! If you want some cheap coffee and good people, go to Henry's!

Desperate for coffee after stepping off of a red eye flight from California, I stumbled into Henry's. I pretty much told the guy behind the counter to make whatever he wanted as long as it was full of caffeine. He made me an iced mocha with cold-pressed espresso and it was fantastic! I've only been there once (so far), but Henry's really seems like the type of place where you can just hang out. I hope to check out the bar upstairs soon. P.S. Watch out for the uneven floors! I definitely tripped once or twice.

Best hangout in Lawrence! I love this place! First off let me just say, I have only been there in the evening with friends, so I can only comment on upstairs, not the bakery or coffee below. There is just something about this place that makes me feel at home. The ambiance cannot be beat. It is intimate, dark and cozy. It is not at all what you would expect from a bar in a college town. The crowd is diverse, laid back, cultured and just all around pleasant and drama free. I long to find something like this in KC. I have yet to be so lucky. If this description entices you as a place to hang out, then definitely go, because my words do not do it justice.

Henry's is your typical college town hipster coffee bar. Located in a historic building in Downtown Lawrence, this coffee bar/upstairs bar is a little worse for ware with beat up floors, a hodge podge of odds & ends furniture, and a variety of other broken down parts mixed with upscale goodies to keep all book-worthy hipster intellectuals happy. They make damn good soy lattes, and offer a host of desserts, pastries, and coffee beverages. Upstairs, they have a bar with the same odds & ends feel and $4 sangria's, among other cocktails. Every college town needs a Henry's. It's the type of place you can come to on your own and feel comfortable enough to keep coming back.

After just one visit I wish I could uproot this coffee place and put it down the street from me in Philly where I live. I stumbled upon Henry's when visiting my parents in Kansas this Christmas. They dropped me off in nearby Lawrence and while walking around I stumbled upon it on a cross street. It looked like a typical coffee place from around town where I live, unique a little arty, dark, exposed brick walls, young hipsters. I ordered a small latte and to my amazement it was only 2.50. 2.50? seriously? Thats at least a dollar cheaper than any place I've been to in philly. You could also add extra shots of espresso for a mere 25 cents. The service was super friendly and quick - though I shouldn't be surprised I was after all in the Mid-West, but living on the east coast you sometimes forget people can actually be that friendly. I think I can honestly say that was the best latte I've ever had....it didn't taste like a typical latte and it wasn't quite what I expected but I loved it and wish I had ordered the largest size rather than the smallest. Mmm. i will definitely pay Henry's another visit the next time I'm in Kansas.

A daily stop for me on my walk to work. Henrys downstairs is the quintessential Lawrence coffee shop. It's the right mix of artsy, hippy, friendly baristas, great coffee, and consistent regulars in a historical building that does it for me.

Ok, this place really annoys me at times. Three complaints in particular. First is there are always flies there..YUCK. I don't know why..I don't care why...I just know if I sit in the front I'm going to feel like I'm in the rain forest. Complaint number two: no credit cards. Minimums I respect...no credit cards at all...that's just unfair Finally, terrible HVAC. If you like smelling sweaty people...this is your Mecca. Otherwise I avoid it in the summer months. Oh, and be prepared to walk through a large cloud of smoke entering the place. Seems like the smoker's paradise. At least coffee has antioxidants--maybe the carcinogens even out? Atmosphere is typical bohemian, though I will give them credit because everyone seems to leave their papers there so I can catch up on much needed reading. Coffee is good..above average. In particular, they make a very good mocha and the staff is pleasant. Some of the baristas are true artists. I don't have a grudge against them and I do go once a month...I just do really avoid them in the summer for the reasons mentioned above.

Henry's exemplifies the bar/coffee shop dynamic. upstairs is a maze of tiny, strangely decorated (zebra print and fountains) rooms with benches and stools that are bolted to the floor. you can crowd into one of the little rooms and pretend you are in someone's very well-stocked living room. the whole place oozes chillness. the drunks at Henry's are pleasant rather than raucous. i would also bathe in their sangria if they would let me.

Henry's is great. All the drinks are made with love, and by love I mean a lot of alcohol that is mixed to be still delicious. Best bar in Lawrence, hands down.

I'm not terribly fond of the coffee shop portion of Henry's, but Upstairs is tremendously sophisticated and relaxing. Thursday night's drink special is 4 dollar premiums and I can't think of a better place to enjoy a good scotch or a top notch gin for 4 dollars. The bartenders are all quiet good and if you show up enough your drink orders will be remembered. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. During winter months they light the fireplace. Henry's also has a nice smoking patio upstairs for those who still care to partake in a smoke. Give it a try some time and prepare to be impressed by this fine purveyor of potations.

Dear Henry's coffee, Do you remember the glory days, when your baristas were competing and winning competitions? I sure do. The espresso (double, straight) hasn't been the same since then. Maybe we could put the uninspired espresso on PT's coffee, the supplier who's La Bella Vita espresso hasn't recently had the brightness and glow of the days of yore. That being said, I love it here. Whenever I'm in Lawrence this is a must have. An espresso is really good, the drip is sweet, bright and smooth that makes a blizzardy afternoon bearable. In the dog days of summer nothing, seriously, nothing beats a glass of cold press coffee, everything perfect in a bean shines through here . When you need an iced coffee drink, please use cold press and not hot shots, just have some blind faith, it's for your own good. The walls, the art, the giant chalkboard with the menu are interesting enough to make even the longest of lines not too boring. Even when I'm unprepared to have a relaxed coffee to-stay, I pull my book from my bag and take a seat at the high bar seats towards the back, or along the side wall at a tiny table for two. The book is used as a prop, I don't think I've ever, all visits combined, read more than 50 pages. But the hipster watching is a sight to behold, this said adoringly. Street parking is available, the back lot almost always has a spot for you, so don't worry about the pre-coffee post-Lawrence night funk stop you from grabbing a cup. P.S. Chocolate covered cherries are the bomb :)

Henry's was one of the first establishments in Lawrence I could call "my own." Of course, it's not mine, it's Dave's, but I "own" several places in Lawrence that aren't really mine. This works out well in most cases. Except when trying to play bouncer. But that's another story.... Henry's! One review can't capture the greatness! My first experience was in the coffee shop when I was but a wee underage college freshman, and I often came here to study and just chat with friends and get away from campus for a while. The hot chocolate is delicious, and because I'm not much of a coffee drinker, that's about all I can say about that. I discovered Henry's Upstairs a year after, and I loved it from the start! The atmosphere was cozy and family-like, if that family just happened to have an animal print room, a full bar, and over 100 people on any given weekend night. My kind of family! Dave is always around to make people feel welcome too, and the bartenders are great at remembering names and faces, which just adds to the whole Henry's family vibe. I always ran into several people I knew, and the social aspect was fabulous. Love it! Full bar, and educated bartenders make for a good experience and forays into new and interesting beverage journeys. The white sangria was a must for my friends during our last year in town, and the bartenders could make just about anything we asked them to make. Good stuff.

Love the bar. Great owners and bartenders. Good conversation and crowd typically. Love the outside patio. Could use some renovation inside, though. That place in the light is ICKY!

I had a perfectly passable latte and was content to sit with my laptop and people watch. The barista was very nice, and had a great curly haircut that she apparently cuts herself!

One of the few places my friends can all agree to go to. Great places to sit and have a conversation. Sometimes the music is too loud, but at least the music is good! Good beer on tap and a fun crowd.

I've only been to Henry's twice and both times the coffee was hot and delish. There is an outdoor area with a few tables/chairs and one room inside. There aren't many seats but it's not a huge problem. Henry's is a nice place to go to study or chat. The baristas are friendly, always nice to see. If you'll be there for awhile get bottomless coffee and one of their big cookies. :) Henry's Upstairs is the kind of place you go if you just want to sit and talk and drink. It is pretty busy on the weekends, I've had to wait for a few people to leave before a friend and I could get in (it only took one minute before someone left). Drinks are strong but not overwhelming. Sangria is so yummy - $4 for a glass. The walls of the place have local art on display and the pieces change occasionally. There are 5 rooms in the Upstairs in which you can sit/stand (one is the outdoor smoking patio). Henry's is just a great place to go!!
