The vanilla frozen custard is undeniable. I used to use this frozen custard for the custard in making tiramisu cake. It is totally amazing. Don't need to make custard by yourself and it tastes better! The burger, hot dog, and fries are also good. I like it more than McDonald.

Absolutely my new favorite fast food restaurant. Freddy's is a throwback to old style steakburgers and diner-era food. (If the restaurant name's Winstead's or Made-Rite mean anything to you, Freddy's is that much better.) Their steakburgers are thing but full of flavor and the hot dogs are fantastic. The buns on both their burgers and dogs are butter toasted to give them something extra, and it really shows. Their fries are thin cut but you get a ton of them with each order. They also have several "gourmet" (at least for fast food places) items, such as chicago dogs and chili cheese fries. And their dessert menu isn't just your average vanilla-or-chocolate ice cream. They have custard, including my personal favorite - Dirt and Worms. For the quality of food you're getting for a fast food joint, the price is insanely low for how good the food is. Chili cheese dog + chili cheese fries + drink is less than seven dollars. At those prices, it's pains me to not go to Freddy's seven days a week. Another awesome part of Freddy's is how nice and helpful the staff is. They always make sure your order is correct and offer suggestions, and they'll always chat you up while you wait for your food. A+ on service. Freddy's beats any other fast food restaurant in Lawrence, hands down. It almost beats any sit-down restaurant, too!

I went to Freddy's confident that I would get exactly what I expected. It looked like a trying-too-hard, not-quite-trendy throwback to old-style hamburger joints where the food was expensive and tasted completely unremarkable. I was mistaken. Freddy's has surprisingly tasty food, good prices, and excellent service. Their basic "Freddy's Original Double" is made simply with mustard, onions, and pickle. The result is an opportunity to taste the excellent flavor of their steak patties. The patty is thinner than most, so it's not a place to get a big fat burger, a la Five Guys. It does excel, however, in having a rich, warm flavor that is accentuated by the carefully chosen toppings. It's a burger of simplicity that uses it's handful of ingredients to create a rich depth of flavor. Their fries are also quite good. The are on the thinner side and don't feel too greasy or salty. They are good enough to eat by themselves but are excellent in concert with a burger and a shake. And speaking of the shakes, they are worth a look as well. You can get a huge number of flavors and variations which means you should find something you like. They taste sweet and fresh, though they can be quite high in calories (and in the case of concretes, shockingly high) -- because of this they are best had as an occasional treat. The service has always been excellent as well. The employees have only ever been polite and enthusiastic. The line moves quickly but not too quickly, so you know your food being made as you order and not before. For a fast food burger place, Freddy's gets high marks all around. Review: 4.25 stars.

Waited at drive-thru for almost 15 minutes to order some ice cream (this is an ice cream shop after all), then the inept Freddy's employee placed my two cones on the window sill to melt for an additional 6 minutes while she took some more drive thru orders (I timed it). Once she was able to bring her attention back to my order, she handed me two dripping cones. The cones had become so soggy that the window attendant poked her finger through the side, but did not make new cones or hesitate to serve the finger-damaged one. Would not recommend, especially on a hot, busy day.

Best service i have ever seen at a fast food establishment! The fries are thin and delicious. The burger was good for fast food

Freddy's burgers are meh (I know they try to slice the meat thin but it tastes sort of dry and paper-y...) and the fries are even more meh (skinny and again dry and a bit tasteless...though I know there's a lot of variability in fry preference so others may enjoy them), but they make a damn good chocolate milkshake - so thick that it is almost impossible to eat it without a spoon. This makes the "mini" size feel like a large portion. Freddy's milkshakes call out to me on 100 degree Kansas summers...and I will totally oblige!

Tasty custard, but pricier than Culvers and Sheridans. I got the Hawaiian sundae with pineapple, coconut and cherries...The custard is creamy but the topping selection is smaller than Sheridans also. While I haven't had the food, my friend got the hot dog and onion rings and said they were tasty but pricey for what you got.

I was so sad to see Sheridans frozen custard go. But I was super happy to see freddys! We had hot dogs, a burger and of course custard! The hot dogs are real beef which is a big plus, the patty is real beef that's not preformed and frozen. The custard is sooo yummy, we got the smallest turtle sundae and it was more than enough for the 2 of us.

My favorite steak burger /custard shop. The custard is top notch. Steak burgers are flavorful, and juicy. French fries are crispy and tasty. Employees are helpful, and patient. If you are in the mood for fast food, then go the Freddy's!

I've been here a couple of times and the place has really gone downhill. The custard isn't very rich or decadent. By the time I received it, it was already half melting because I had been waiting in line for ten minutes through the drive-thru. I wasn't impressed..the fries are so small and thin too.

I only had dessert, and the custard was great--would definitely go again if I see one (I gather it's a chain). Really helpful service also.

I usually pass here on my runs to and from Topeka. I figured/hoped it would be a greasy burger with decent fries. It turned out to be exactly that. If needing another food stop and one of runs, this will be added to my list.

3 stars for the food, 5 stars for the Custard. We had a Freddy's in my previous town that we frequented often but today was the first time I'd been to the Freddy's in Lawrence. I used the drive thru and ordered a Original Double and fries. I know from past experience that you always get a lot more fries when you eat in. The burgers are alright, kind of salty. My favorite type of fries are shoestring extra crispy and Freddy's has that. They just didn't hold up to the drive back to my office and got cold and bland quickly. However, the custard is the best custard I've had. I love the Turtle Sundae. They definitely have a great recipe for that.

This is actually a decent fast food restaurant. Their fries are thin, crisp, and well seasoned, and one of my favorite things about this restaurant. Their steak burgers are good, but to me the star is the hot dog. The hot dog buns are a rectangular shape, and well toasted. They have about 20 topping options for the hot dogs, and most of them are free! From sauerkraut, to tomatoes and any condiments you'd like, you can create a really substancial dog! If you saved room for dessert, the custard is great. All options are about $3-6, which is pricier than other fast food options, but you get a lot for your money - enough to share. They have some creative sundaes like the peanut butter and banana or the dirt and worms, which would be great for kids! There is a "mini" size for smaller appetites.

Freddy's done a great take on the diner thing. It is like Steak and Shake but BETTER. Who does not like custard better than standard ice cream? Really?? The shoestring fries are always crisp and delicious bathed in their infamous fry sauce. Do not count the calories. lol The burgers are tender and delicious. They will top them as you like. I ordered my classic mayo, jalapeno, onion, and cheese. Tasty stuff. \ If you need a burger fix or a dessert fix this place is consistently good, and the staff is very nice. Think Chick Fil A. Good stuff.

I have driven past this place every day on my way to/from work and never stopped in. After a particularly rough morning at work and several days of good workout routines, I decided to splurge and get an unhealthy burger and fries...something I haven't had in quite some time. My order was a burger with lettuce, pickle, jalapeno, no cheese. Here is the funny thing...they charge extra for cheese, lettuce and tomato. Cheese I understand, but 15 cents for lettuce and 15 cents for tomato? Wow... And the funny thing is, they offer more "exotic" toppings for free, including jalapenos and even sauerkraut. WTF? Anyways, the meat was incredibly bland and largely tasteless, and the toppings kept falling off, so I ended up with just a burger and a side salad of jalapeno, pickle and lettuce. The fries...just not my style. They were very lightly salted, which I did like (though many salt-aholics might say they're tasteless), but I am not a fan of shoestring fries. Some people are, I am not. Service is fine but nothing special. Prices seem fair, minus the 15 cents for lettuce and tomato thing. The place is open, airy and clean. The music (seemed to be Sirius XM 50s station) was very enjoyable. I was, however, the only person eating there that did not have an AARP card in my wallet. Unfortunately, for my occasional splurge of a burger and fries, I would rather go to Five Guys or Henry T's.

Not a terrible place, but pretty expensive for fast food. The custard is great, which is good since that's their selling point. The shoestring fries are, in my opinion, overseasoned, but they still taste good. They have some pretty excellent hot dogs and their veggie burger isn't bad at all. The steak burger is supposed to be really popular, but I don't actually know anyone who loves it. They're always really greasy and peppery and they just fall apart while you're eating them. Definitely an "eat in house" kind of food. The pseudo-diner decor is alright, but they tried to go for a modern look and it ultimately ended up being mostly tile and brushed aluminum, which results in a very loud place of business. Finally, the location is kind of terrible. The corner the restaurant is on, 23rd and Iowa, is difficult to get in and out of, ESPECIALLY during the current dark ages of construction at that intersection.

The only thing I like about Freddy's is their hot dogs. Other than that, it's not worth it. I usually have to repeat my order several times then wait in line for 6+ minutes. SO SLOW.

Lawrence has a variety of ice cream, yogurt, and custard shops dotting its landscape, but I have to admit, if I am craving custard, I head to Freddy's. Yes, it is a little pricy, but the servings are huge, so go with the mini or the regular--this is very rich stuff and a little goes a very long way. The vanilla waffle cone is a great deal--tons of custard. I am also a fan of the malts...lots of malt powder for lots of flavor. I have only had the hot dog as far as "real" food goes. It was fine, but noting super special--I go here for the custard, why waste precious stomach room on "real" food?
