Been there a million times and have never been disappointed until recently. We went there with a very important colleague/friend after raving to him about how great it was. Imagine my embarrassment, When an hour and a half later, our colleague is complaining to management that we haven't gotten our meals. We had to complain three times, and when we finally got our meals they came out separately, minutes apart. They were not up to par. The manager complained that someone took a big party outside and screwed everything up. The dining room was almost empty! Manager said can I get you a comp. dessert? I said no I want to leave now, so he took Money off the check. Money does not remove the embarrassment as we were trying to treat our friend to a nice meal, and it was a disaster.

We love the new Hobart location and hoped to have same service in Valpo. No set up at our table in the bar, food was delivered barely warm and service was fair. Truly disappointed this time.

I had eaten at ElSalto many years ago and the food, especially the chips and salsa, was great. My husband and I stopped for lunch yesterday. I ordered the taco and enchilada combo and he ordered the hamburger with fries (wasn't in the mood for Mexican that day). Well the salsa for the chips had absolutely NO taste whatsoever but the chips were good. Our server was very nice and refilled my water without asking. Then we got our meals. Hubbies was advertised in the menu as 1/2 pound of ground beef tastefully cooked with 2 slices of THICK bacon on top. What came out was a SMALL patty (think small McDonalds on a regular bun) crisply fried with 2 slices of (it was the precooked bacon you get in the packages of already cook bacon) bacon on top. The only thing hot was the french fries. The hamburger was medium warm at best. My meal had the soft taco wrapped in aluminum foil (?) that was only lukewarm when I unwrapped it. The enchilada was also only barely warm. The refried beans were, at best, out of the nearest can. The waiter never stopped by to ask how our meal was and I never volunteered the info. I just won't be going back ever again. LaCabana is so very much better. I was truly disappointed as I remember a great meal at the same restaurant years ago.

I tried to flag someone down to pay..but no use... I had to start being loud to get them over to us... But the fat girls that sat next to us got waited on like they owned the place.. A very average tex-mex type restaurant. Some things on the menu are consistently good such as the fajitas and alambre. Seafood items are not very good. Most items I've eaten have just been average. If you want Mexican, I would recommend going down the road to El Amigo instead.

The unenthusistic hostess begrudgingly sat us... already not happy. The waitress made up for that, she was the only bright spot of our evening, her name was Genny. She was smiley, attentive and genuinely enthusiastic. The atmosphere was a paint roll over of whatever failed restaurant previously existed. We started with dry, tasteless complimentary chips and salsa which we usually plow through at any Mexican Restaurant worth their salt. These were horrible and unworthy. Very disappointing. We both ordered Fajitas. Shrimp for me, Steak and Chicken combo for my fiance'. The fajitas were tasteless, and salty. Everything overcooked with the exception of the green peppers... which were the only peppers in this dish. I thought there were red peppers, but no these were mushy mealy tomatoes. I've never had tomatoes in my fajitas, and it wasn't a pleasant surprise. Fortunately our beverages were bottled, so nothing to screw up there. Really too bad, need to find a local Mexican restaurant... the search continues.

The food was really bad I have no idea how they could be proud of themselves for selling people such horrible food. The service was decent really friendly and huge tvs to watch the games great place to relax and eat but the food just awful. I never really leave reviews at all but this place food was so awful I had to. Seriously if your looking for mexican food please please go somewhere else.

My favorite Mexican restaurant for over 10 years. Get the queso dip and have them add chorizo. And oh are the margaritas strong. Miguel is the best!

Wanted to cheat a little bit on my diet and get in the festive season of Fat Tuesday 2014 with a group of my friends. Against my objections, I was pulled along to yet another mexican restaurant...ugh, where to start. Alright here's the thing, I'm mexican. My family is mexican, and you best believe my family's heritage comes out on the dinner plate. So here's the biggest problem; I'm used to home made pork taco meat, flautas, and tostadas. We have whole days dedicated to making tamales or Caldo del res. These are my comfort foods, things that remind me of good times with family. So automatically, any mexican food is set to a standard higher than any other ethnic food I've eaten. I've been to the Casablancas, I've been to the Pepes, I've been to the La Carretas and now I can add El Salto to that list. It's just...ok. I've always felt there was only so much you could do with the same 5 ingredients (tortillas, meat, cheese, beans and rice) and my opinion still stands that most of these places are too much of the same. Now specifically about El Salto. Like I said before and I'll say again, It's ok. I give high marks to service as it was fast and friendly. A major highlight was the chips and salsa. I'm used to tortilla chips just dripping with grease. These guys seemed baked, or at least were dried before hitting the table. It was definitely a pleasant change from the usual chip and salsa grease scene. Salsa was thick and savory and I could have eaten it all night long, sadly it goes down hill from here. In the neutral zone was my entree. I ordered a mesquite steak wrap off the healthy choice menu...not bad, but bland and the steak was a little overcooked, maybe that's why it was on the healthy choice menu. And in the blah zone were the Margaritas. Initially I thought I was in Margarita heaven with 17 different flavors I was expecting the good stuff. It seems my expectations were set too high. My God, my god... you might as well have just put a straw in a sugar sack and called it a day, thats how overly sweet this stuff was. It was borderline alcoholic pixie stix. So that's my experience with El Salto. Chips and Salsa were top notch. My entree seemed like it needed more of El Salto and the drinks had more sugar in them than Wonka's chocolate factory. If anyone asked me to describe this place in two words, my reply would be. "It's okay" thing is, I would say the same thing for about 99% of the mexican joints around here too. So take this review with a grain of....El Salto.

Horrible service, subpar food. It took forever to get us seated....our waitress told us that they did not have silverware nor margarita glasses. Never go here.

I'd give zero stars if I could. Don't go here.

Horrible service; dirty Margarita glass, had leftover strawberries from someone else's margarita! Food was not Mexican; more like from someone who once had Mexican then went home to make it. The quickest I saw waitress move was to check her tip!

I'm kind of sad that I'm writing this review because I don't want to be mean but after quite a few visits to the Valpo location, I think its time to post something. I went tonight with two friends and we waited so long to get drinks that we went through two baskets of chips. The worst part is that someone came by to give us more chips but no one had even taken our drink order! Finally we got our order taken and it seemed like such a long wait for our food that I almost didn't even want it anymore. The food was good though when it finally came out and although I didn't drink tonight, I do enjoy their margaritas and mixed drinks. Overall, I do enjoy this place and will be back but I wish my waits weren't so excessive.

The service here is terrible. At one point, the server argued with me over what I ordered. Claim a "vegetarian menu," but their beans contain animal fat. I avoid this place if I can!

HAHA, I can't believe people take this place seriously food wise. It is a bar named El Salto. If you think you're going to head to this place to eat, plan on being in the hospital a few hours later. On the other hand, a great place to grab a drink and play some pool. Very 1980's style bar.

The worst service I've ever had at a restaurant. I waited ten minutes for a waiter to come to our table, but no one came so I flagged down a waiter who went to look for ours. Nearly five minutes later, our waiter finally showed up. We told him we were ready to order our food, but he said we could not order drinks and food at the same time. Five minutes later we were finally allowed to order our food. I thought the worst was over, but I was so very wrong. I would like the reader to keep in mind that this happened at 5pm on a Tuesday night when the place was not yet busy with dinner but well staffed. We waited for our food, but it never came even 20 minutes later. We were just about to leave when it showed up. We both ordered the pork tacos. The meat was greasy and limp, the rice was extremely greasy and flavorless, the shells were store bought, and the beans were dry. I cannot believe we waited so long for that. Our waiter managed to disappear again. My son was feeling sick, so I had to flag another waiter down in order to get our check. Another seven minutes go by before our check appears. I had a groupon I was using for our meal. The waiter told me that I could not use it. I asked him why, but all he would say was "no tonight." I told him that I was going to use it tong

They now have a Healthy Choices menu that lists calories and carbs. Several items to pick from. Also, it looks they are expanding into the old Za Za's space.

This is more of a generic Mexican place for NWI, and so it has the festive vacation interior and the look of a good-times corporate Mexican place. This said, the food here is solid and not that bad at all, and the service is good. If you have friends who prefer this sort of place to a taqueria and want to drink a bunch of margaritas, you have your mark here. No one propositioned anyone when I was here, but that would have been funny.

We have been twice. The first time was decent so we decided to go back again about a month later. The service was terrible and the food was cold. My wife had a taco salad and the shell was burnt. We won't go back.

We went to El Salto May 24th and had a terrible time. We had a bad waitress(took our drink order but never got drinks) and after an hour and twenty minutes ,NO FOOD. After waiting 40 minutes to sit , and we were told 20. We talked to the manager and he just stared at us and said nothing. So we got up and left 4 year old with us that was now upset, tired and hungry. We were seated at 8:00pm and got up and left at 9:20pm. I know restaurant's get busy , and we are extremely patient people, but we just couldn't take it. Cannot recommend restaurant to anyone and we will NOT be going back.

The food hear is soaked in grease, all the veggies taste frozen and everything is smothered in a thick layer of mexican cheese as if it is supposed to distract from it's horrible food. My sister used to love this place so we went here often until about 6 months ago when we both got horribly sick after eating here. I mean I lived a quarter mile from here and we both thought we were going to mess our pants on the way home and then fought over the bathroom. Eww, I can't even stomach the thought of going back here. When i want mexican I'll go to Agave in Hobart instead.

I actually don't think this place is worth even one star! Went to this place for the first time this past Sunday with a group of 10 people and received unbelievably poor service. The waiter acted as if he were doing us a favor bringing us water and chips and got irritated when we asked for an extra to-go box. Food was sub par and went for a higher price than you would get at other places. We were also told that we'd be charged for extra chips and salsa, even though these are complementary but I guess the waiter didn't feel like bringing them to our table. For an almost $200 check total, you would think the restaurant would take a little more care in providing us with better service. The only thing that's authentic in this "Authentic Mexican Restaurant" is the smug attitude and poor quality of food. If you are looking for a delicious Mexican meal and good service, you should definitely think twice before giving this place a try!

Having lived in Austin (where breakfast tacos roam in herds on the streets) I acquired a taste for good Mexican food. El Salto is great! Good food, reasonable prices, friendly service, tasty (and huge) margaritas. Definitly a place to return over and over.

Authentic? Um, have you guys spent any time in Mexico? Real Mexican food is FRESH! This is a pile of grease on a plate. And unless you get the super top shelf marg., don't expect much alcohol in yours.

TERRIBLE. TERRIBLE. TERRIBLE. Food is run of the mill Mexican and the service was awful. We won't be back.

I went here for my boyfriend's mom's birthday and I actually think this El Salto is better than the El Salto in Chesterton. The menu appears slightly different and they have a variety of healthy options listed (I can't remember if the menu did in Chesterton or not). We sat outside on a really lovely day. The waiter seemed very stressed, possibly with an inside/outside section on this busy day, but I thought he did his best to give us good service. I ordered shrimp and vegetable quesadillas as one of their healthy options and I thought it was honestly one of the best meals I've had at a mexican restaurant. Their chips and salsa and chips and queso were AWESOME. I really enjoyed this and would love to go back.

While this isn't the most exceptional Mexican food, I was pleased with the flavors and especially pleased with the prices-- especially Bohemia for $2.50! That being said, the ambience needs some work-- notably, the gigantic projection screen is really just too much. I was eating Mexican food in a place with carved tables... and watching a show about World War II. WTF? I understand the need of the screen for futbol games, or special events, but to have it down all the time is just creating too much chaos. The food is tasty-- I had the chicken fajitas, while my sister had the shrimp mole. Her dish won. Rich flavor, smoky-- and once again, inexpensive. Good spot to go, but I really do hope they tone down the amount of televtision clatter in the dining room. If you want to watch TV, go to the bar.

All I can say is...pork carnitas. Or pork carnitas dinner. You must try their Vampiro, the house drink. Highly recommended. One of the best mexican restaurants I have been to.

Eating at el salto started out a little salty...we really didn't have a waitress for the first twenty minutes. Finally i asked a waitress hey do you want to be our waitress!!! Then we started getting drinks, chips and great food. I got a burrito with (Mexican pork carnitas) very delicious. Their rice and beans...great flavor. Everything was very good. They even had a cheesy guy singing some Lady Gaga or something in the background...that might of not been very "Ethnic" but it was damn funny after a few margaritas! Overall I give this place 4 out of 5 stars...might of gotten a big 5 if we had a waitress for the first 20 minutes.

I'm not sure why this place is getting such poor reviews. I always have decent food and great service. I also love the little band that plays at your table on Wednesdays.

Awful....nothing authentic about it. Terrible service and mediocre at best food. Anybody who like this place, has clearly never eaten good mexican food.

  • Nichole F.

I'm VERY picky about Mexican food. I can usually tell if I am going to like the food when I step in the door. If it looks a little run down, a little hole-in-the-wall-ish, a little chaotic - then I know it's going to be good. That's why I was so surprised when I tasted the delicious food at El Salto. It's a clean establishment with friendly and quick service. I've never had anything I don't like. The beer is always cold, service always spectacular, and enchiladas always extra cheesy - just how I order them!

  • Nathan S.

It was good...not great. My tacos weren't bad and the price is reasonable for the amount of food you get. Cool atmosphere if you want to chat and get some really good margaritas.

  • Kyle T.

Really great stuff, although I've only dined in once, I've picked up food many times. This is about as authentic as it gets in the NWI area, you can't get any better. For a small price, you can get a huge burrito with stuff piled on it. The inside is very lackluster, nothing special about it, but who cares, if you're going for the food it shouldn't be a big deal at all.

  • L. R.

Well, I have to write another review because we ate here last night. The salsa wouldn't come out of the bottle because it was too cold. The chips were uncharacteristically greasy. The tostada thingy I ate was stale. The food was not hot. I used to somewhat like this place. Since they've gotten bigger the food has suffered. The service is always great though.

We come here on occasions due to the lack of al fresco dining in Northwest Indiana. Yes, it's great to come here during the summer for a cold Negra Modelo and Margaritas while sitting outdoors. As far as the food goes, I'm not impressed. The ambiance, decor, and servers make it seem as if you are going to eat something authenticly Mexican and homemade. It lacks REAL Mexican taste. I have yet to find a great Mexican restaurant in the immediate region. Otherwise, I trek to the city to get my fix.

I went here while visiting my parents for the holidays. I was missing the L.A. taco trucks and needed some good Mexican food. Gotta say, I thought it was really good. We went there on a Friday night and there was just a short wait to be seated (it was snowy out though, so maybe that kept some people from going out). First off, as with many Mexican restaurants, you get chips and salsa to start off. The chips are good, nothing too special about them though. The salsa is good too, although I wouldn't mind a little more spice to it. For dinner, I had the combination chicken, steak and chorizo plate, which was served with rice and bean and tortillas. All was very well prepared and tasty. The chicken and the steak were both tender and juicy and the chorizo was cooked perfectly. The service was good too, attentive and friendly. Overall, very good and pretty authentic Mexican food for NW Indiana. I'd recommend it.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
